gunplay is good, bosses are bad, the story is meh, the campaign is tooo short and lacks diversity ( no missions in snow area or desert area, etc. there is more to complain but these are my main gripes.

Just finished it, and I'm not really sure where all these millions went.

+ The gun play is fun ... for the few first hours, but then you just want it all to finally end, jeez.

    - Acting is bad.
    - Face animations are awful.
    - Story is meh.
    - Open world is empty.
    - Ubisoft vibes are all around.

Would be really funny to see what state the game was at the time of XBOX Series release.

Love the indoor graphic but it seems that the graphics in the openworld wasn't well optimized. The performance is terrible with my 1060 in the open world where the fps drops dramaticly. I just rate the Singleplayer, maybe for multiplayer matches it's okey!
So the graphic is okeyish. Not nice, not ugly.
The gunplay is sooo boring. Almost every weapon in this game plays the same, very few exceptions. They are optimised for the Multiplayer, which seems to be the main product anyway, but do not really make fun in the campaign. While i'm at things not fun: The enemies.

While i'm at things not fun: The enemies. The saddest thing is that they nerved there unique quirks. For example: In older halo games the grunts would panik if you kill an elite. In Infinite they only very rarely do that.
Another anoying thing is there bulletspongyness. They just take forever to take down. Not that it hard to do so, you just need a lot of time for every single one.
Even worse are the boss fights. Normaly in a small area, but always with an absurdely large health/shield pool. I hated every single encouter with them. They even managed to take the fun out of fighting hunter, by giving them more armor and hitpoints. If you knew how to you could outsmart hunters anf kill them with style, now even the "weakspot" takes a lot of bullets (And i don't like to mention the red hunter variation...).
And from about the second half on there is always some enemy with a rocket launcher/grenade thrower, just to make it anoying to fight anything (Sometime even homing missiles).

The vehicles are also unsatisfying. The first time you can get a Scorpion Tank is early on in the Open World Part. And normaly, when you get a tank in Halo, there is bound to be fun and you will be death incarnate, as long as you have that tank. But not in Inifinite. Here that thing is broken before you leave that outpost, unless you cleared it before getting the tank. And it's like that with every vehicle, they break faster that dryed bread.
And what the fugde is wrong with there controls? It feels like you had a drink to much before you took the tank for a ride.
And who had this borderline dumb idea that a Banshee can no longer hover but always has to move? Suddenly it is unrealistic that the aliance, with all their gravity tek, can build a hovering airship?

Oh and as a sidenote: The main manu of the game takes about as long a normal level, just to load up.

So are just so many things that are fundamentaly flawed in this game. I looks like fun, for one hour give or take, but once the nostalgia fades it leaves a very bitter and shalow taste. It fails as an open world title, and it is nowhere near being an entry in the Halo series.
They tried to cover that with the music and catchphrases in the loading screen, but they failed miserably.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I honestly don't know what this is. It isn't a Halo game, that I know for sure. It's fun, but nothing I haven't seen before. The gameplay is fast paced and fluid enough that it's a fun game to sit around and shoot things in the face. The campaign has unlocks and upgrades that will help you progress. The open map system, while fine and functional, has really killed the "Halo-esq" for this game. I feel like I'm playing Modern Warfare (and a mediocre Modern Warfare at that) and not a Halo. I guess I can understand the decision to revamp the game, but I'm not sure its a welcome receive for the Halo franchise. 343i just doesn't seem to know what they want to do so they'll try anything to breathe new life into the series. When it comes to the lore, I can comfortably say I'm a bit disappointed. As a lore buff, I've read the novels and get really intrigued by all the things lore-wise. This game took everything it had established in the past few releases (of all media, books, games, movies) and threw it all away. They scrapped the story that people were hating on instead of trying to finish it out with a better conclusion. It's not rare for a story to start weak and end strong. In fact I would say many many stories start out a bit weak compared to where its leading. Instead of trying to finish strong, they just... didn't finish and started again. Both of the enemies I was expecting to battle against are gone. All the exciting bits of the story have been skipped over and you start out in a worse position than the last story left you at. Are ALL of the games going to gave humanity in the toilet only for Master Chief to save everyone? In fact, they pretty much start you at bare minimum and in the scope of one game expect some kind of revitalized force. I cant say much more without going into spoilers so ill go into spoilers. Stop reading here if you wish to remain uninitiated.

I expected to be fighting Cortana as the overall threat that needs to be taken care of with The Banished and Atriox as the more present danger. Instead, in the first hour of the game you learn they're both dead and a new enemy has taken their place. What? What happened? Shouldn't I be playing through the time all of this stuff went down? Why am I so far out of the know? What happened to all that build up? There's just very little pay off. Now we have a brute that made an appearance in one book and a whole new species. Humanity was already in bad shape with basically the UNSC Infinity as it's only force. Then they trash all that in the first 5 minutes too! What's next, Master Chief is naked and has a BB gun? The story isn't automatically epic because you start in such a **** position. I would have much rather had the Infinity as an asset and not just magical plot-armored out the butt Master Chief. You do know that while Master Chief is good, hes not so much better than any other Spartan II, right? He's humanities savior because of his one important role in a grand war, not the ONLY person to fight.

The game still has a lot of balancing and technical work to be done. Scaling is a pretty big issue. I MAXXED my shields first before unlocking anything else. Despite this, there were still bosses that could one shot me. Some elites, and sometimes more than one, will chase you down ruthlessly, swinging their swords chopping you to bits. 2 good swings and you're dead. What are you supposed to do? You run slower backwards but you have to keep shooting them, which takes FOREVER for them to die. Same with brute chargers. Who thought they were a good idea? The game has a lot of guns... too many. Then they provide you with all of them before a major battle but if you chose the wrong ones, now you're stuck in the save and have to scurry around and find the weapons you need with a boss that has the potential to one shot you. The other Halos would make the weapon you should be using obvious by having it laying in the middle of the floor or tucked away within reach. Even then it wasn't impossible with any other weapon. I still don't know how to reliably take down hunters. It's nigh impossible to get around them so you're stuck plugging away at the orange bits you can see. They will track you despite obstacles and will ALWAYS face you. They don't melee nearly as much so you can't bait an attack and they spam their gun at close range making it suicide to try anyway. The back armor breaks off like always, for all the good it will do since you'll never be able to shoot it. Jackles now have an even smaller bit of their hand sticking out to hit to stagger them and they'll swap positions to the top of the shield too. In conclusion, it's not a masterpiece, and you may be thrown off by the story, but its still fun to play and mess around with. Don't bother buying it for lore purposes as it pretty much throws it all out of the window anyway.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just finished it, took me 14 hours on Normal. Did all side quests, propoganda towers, rescue ops,f.o.b and collected all Spartan Cores. Didnt care to collect dolls and audiofiles. IMO This is game is way too overhyped and over-praised
Which i assume is because of the failure of this year's COD and Battlefield (well at least in my country) .
This was below my expectations. Reasons being
There is an openworld but there is zero variety and the missions in Halo 2 has more variety in the landscape.
The story is being given more credit than it deserves. Too many things are left for DLCs. All Master Chief accomplished was the prevention of the repair of the Halo Zeta and some e-romance closure. Thats it. Atriox is still alive and kicking, and the final boss Harbinger still succeeded despite us defeating her. And why was Cortana killed offscreen before the game even began? Wasnt she the future bad guy set up in Halo 5 :Gaurdians?
Are they gonna kill Atriox offscreen before the start of the next Halo game?
I have a GTX 1070 system, and i play open world games like Farcry 6 fine at 80+ fps High setting but this game run like **** (40-50fps) when i step outside in the open world. I know its a Xbox Series X title but PC optimisations need to improve. The open world isnt even varied or complex, neither is it big.
And i thought this is Microsoft's biggest gaming project in the past 5 years yet we have cutscenes only at the start? Cutscenese dont enhance gameplay, but if the cost was cut there, why wasnt the money allocated to building a better open world?
People say it has awesome action, run and gun gameplay etc but i think the only standout feature was the grapple hook which brought new dimensions to the combat mechanics. However, this is what i used 95% of the time. No need to upgrade other skills. Even when i encountered those invisible baddies, i just grapple+shockwave the area where i suspect them to be and BAM they are visible or dead. The 4th and 5th skill was useless.
They should had added incentives to kill bad guys. In most missions i simply went from checkpoint to checkpoint whithout killing the enemies. Kinda reminds me of the recent disaster of a game-D&D:Dark Alliance. Maybe they should make killing enemies grant us some honor currency that can be used to purchase vehicles and guns in the F.O.B. (instead of getting it for free after unlocking them with valor). I mean, u can just give all your soldiers the HVT version of Cindershots for free and bring them along to annihilate every enemy (as long as they are on a vehicle, else they die very easily). Speaking of HVTs that gaurd special unlockable weapons. I shot all of them with a sniper. Hope its not so easy in harder difficulty levels.
The Grapple hook+AOE shockwave combo and the vehicles are too overpowered on Normal. Word of advice. Dont play on Normal, its too easy.
And oh my god the Bugs..the Bugsssss. Dont get me started on it. If you play it on PC, youl already know.
I am not into arena style multiplayer shooters. Played the multiplayer on Steam during Beta and its just isnt for me.
Now you may say BuT HaLo iS sUpPosEd to bE pLaYed iN HaRdEsT DiFFicULty well my opinion is that if a game is underwhelming in its default/normal difficulty then its underwhelming overall. Plus difficulty levels wont help improve PC optimsation, bland story, boring open world etc.
So all in all, the 14 hour experience wasnt worth the money.
    I rate it 5/10
    (when compared to Halo 1)

    2. No dedicated fullscreen, so you need to choose between windowed mode or borderless. There's also no way for you to alter the internal resolution, so you're forced to either use resolution scaling or change the resolution of the monitor itself.
    3. The open world feels empty and pointless, since everything looks the same everywhere.
    4. Only some of the collectibles are marked on the map after clearing outposts, so you'll be looking for needles in a haystack or be forced to use a walkthrough if you want to find the rest of them.
    5. Some of the collectibles are located in mission areas you can't return to, and since there's also no way to replay missions after they're finished, you're permanently locked out of collecting these items (and thus also 100%ing the game) unless you get them all the first time you play these missions.
    6. Collectibles you've already picked up still show on the map. You can barely tell them apart from uncollected ones, and there's no way to filter which ones to show.
    7. Boring story.
    8. No co-op.
    9. Awful enemy design. The antagonists look like some sort of space gorillas, with little to no variation from individual to individual, and they all have the same burly voice.
    10. Bullet sponge enemies. You'll have to unload a whole stream of shots into their unarmored heads for them to die, and even more if you're hitting armor or anywhere else on the body.
    11. Enemies can kill you in one hit from full HP even on lower difficulties, forcing you to clear out an entire area all over again.
    12. You randomly fall through the ground of the game world and die. This has happened to me on several occasions, usually when I'm using a special ability.

I'll update this review if I notice anything else.

Painfully milquetoast game with an egregious cash grab in-game store.
Campaign consists of a mediocre story and a vast EMPTY open world.
Multiplayer is where 343 absolutely dropped the ball and killed off all hype players holding on hope had for the game's success.

It's a good enough videogame, would be better if it wasn't called "Halo". It's a husk of an IP for name recognition stuffed with generic videogame elements and current year cutesy "nothing is serious" humor. Halo should have ended with 3, and they need to call the new stuff something different, because while it's fine, it's just has nothing to do with the original games.

To note some of the issues:

    - Tacked on open world that although visually appealing lacks purpose / depth. Repetitive copy and pasted objectives that are just flat out tiresome and boring to complete and jarring to go between fleshed out story missions then returning to skeleton objectives. It feels like they are just jumping on a trend, much like their multiplayer battle pass.

    - The story of the game is just meh, no spoilers but I can summarise it as retcon the Halo 5 story without retconning the Halo 5 story.

    - Boss battles aren't fun. They are just normal enemies with larger health bars in most cases. Seems like there isn't a technique or much skill involved to defeat them, most times it seems to come down to RnG.

    - Not shipping with COOP! This is a big one, given it's a halo staple.

    - Not enough ammo / enemies with too much health, you find yourself in a constant struggle of not having ammo and having to constantly pick weapons up that often suck. That and getting locked into linear parts of the game with garbage weapons.

Lots of potential but just doesn't feel quite there... If I had to suggest improvements:

    - Troop ranking system similar to Halo wars, to give incentive to keep marines alive and take them with you

    - Some sort of base upgrade system

    - Allow team killing of marines, this has always been in Halo seems odd to have removed it now

    - Fix the map, on PC it's borderline unusable due to it's controls with the mouse moving the map position... That and it needs more functionality like ability to filter on objectives, see them from a distance etc.

    - Have somewhere in the gui to show overall collectables progress, it's frustrating to hover up and down the map trying to work out if you got them all

The animations on some of the enemies looks good but the cutscenes are pretty horrible. The main bad guy is cliche and seems very one dimensional. I don't really care about his threats, who he is, or anything about him.

Once you get outside it does get better but it is just not that great. The open world looks okay but things in the distance look bad, some of the effects are terrible (tire tracks), and it just looks like a game from 4 years ago. I also find pilot annoying, he just complains the whole time and the open world is just okay. When I'm playing it I just keep thinking is this game better than other open world FPS games and I keep coming back to the same answer, no. It doesn't look better, the world isn't better, the story is weak, etc. If it wasn't Master Chief I think people wouldn't be giving this game anything above an 8, the nostalgia is definitely boosting a lot of these scores.

I would say if you aren't invested n the Halo universe then you're not going to love this game. You'll probably have a decent enough time but it really isn't all that. Don't trust anyone who's giving this game a 10/10, they have rose tinted glasses on.

I genuinely did enjoy a lot of my time with Halo Infinite, but the moment I realized I was about to start the final mission of the game I realized that this game was never going to capture the essence of the series it claimed it would, honestly I don't think they were ever trying to.

Halo Infinite is a step up from 343's last title, but at the end of the day it still falls victim to all of the studio's shortcomings; and despite the return of the classic artstyle, this is arguably the least "Halo-like" game in the series.

Every installment in this series since Reach has strayed further away from the original formula, which makes sense since the games are now being made by different creatives and developers. However this game's jump to the Open World format, along with many different gameplay and direction decisions takes it beyond just a different take on the series and ultimately makes it feel more like its own IP, vaguely inspired by Halo.

A common criticism I've had with Post Bungie halo games is that it feels like the developers are overthinking which direction to take them. In my opinion, Halo's greatest strength has always come from being accessible yet rewarding experience; feeling immediately comprehensible for new players yet having the mechanical depth to still have a pretty high skill ceiling (In both single and Multiplayer). Halo Infinite, however, Has so many mechanics and systems at play that, while not overwhelming, that sense of accessibility feels lost. With the entire game world being saturated with specific damage-type explosive barrels and identical bases to capture and operate; then populated with so many variants of the same enemy that it's hard to tell which rank each variant is, the game effectively trades all immersion for constant reminders that the skill ceiling exists and if you're new you know how bad you are.

The core gameplay is fun, but almost completely devoid of Halo's key elements. Every weapon has hard scoping, sprinting and Doom Eternal style movement mechanics are necessary to get around and battle tougher enemies, You can refill an alien weapon's ammo without finding a new one, and the actual tradeoffs between damage types has been minimized, with all weapons, even automatic and plasma guns doing head-shot damage. All these little changes don't need to be bad on their own, but they add up and ultimately make the gameplay feel too generic and like anything else you'd get from any other Triple A studio these days.

Even the actual way the Universe is explored through the game feels lacking. In previous games each faction felt distinctive in their appearance and weapons, but in Infinite not only is there very little visual identity between the weapons of each faction, but enemies will some-what frequently use UNSC weapons against you, making the banished feel far less distinctive as an enemy than the covenant did. All this alongside all weapons having headshot damage and reloading makes them all feel too similar.

The Story and campaign rivals Halo 5 in narrative failure. The story isn't nearly as frustrating to sit through, but it is arguably worse in that nothing really happens, yet plot-lines and characters are buried so that they can't even be revisited. Without spoiling anything, very few characters from previous games appear in Infinite, the closest we get to representation from any pre-existing supporting cast are some collectable audio files. Worse yet, major storylines are entirely resolved off-screen, while the main campaign takes the player through dull objective after dull objective, with actually essential information to the plot being deeply confusing and largely reliant on the player collecting hidden audio files to make even a little sense.

All around Halo Infinite is a perfectly fine open world action game; but as a Halo game it fails spectacularly, and strongly suggests the devs at 343 would be more comfortable making their own IP than trying to modernize Halo. While as a longtime fan I have almost nothing positive to say about it, I won't rate this any lower than a 7 because the game does very little "wrong" from an independent design perspective. It merely fails to revive the franchise it promised it would.

The story itself was underwhelming, with large portions of the story coming from the audio logs scattered around the world. Personally, I am not a fan of the new characters that were introduced, none of them had much backstory or personality to speak of.

If you are considering spending $60, I personally would wait until a sale, or updates fix the technical issues, and co-op are added

The best thing about Halo Infinite is the graphics. It runs great and looks very good!
Sound design, for me, is a hit and miss as always. Weapons still sound very weak (but better than before at least) and ambient sound is still great.

The worst offender for me however is still the story. I do love sci-fi games, but Halo simply never clicked with me.

Halo Infinite has an enjoyable combat system and a fun multiplayer that will appease many fans, however, the new campaign is a disappointment. The story, characters and open world all feel half baked. The story felt as though nothing happened, thus resulting in a game that doesn't progress the story in any meaningful way.

The narrative is pretty lacking, I can't believe they killed a major character off-screen and passed it off as acceptable story telling. They introduce a new "race" that we do not know anything about and remains unexplained for the entirety of the story before she is finished off by chief and finally who are the banished? Do you need to read/play every spin-off media that is made for Halo to get a good story experience out of a Halo game these days? No yikes this games narrative is rough as hell. At no point was I at the edge of my seat because of the narrative. Also very disappointing is the loss of excellent cinematography in the cutscenes that even Halo 4 & 5 had. This was a staple of the series, but cutscenes are Infinite are extremely barebones. There were some interesting shots, but you can count them on one hand.

The sound design is excellent, but most of the original music is not memorable. Relying on the original trilogy music feels kind of desperate, but objectively that music is good.

As for the gameplay and open world. The gameplay is perfectly serviceable, the grappling hook is introduced and feels pretty useful in combat. I did not care for the Far Cry-esque open world map markers and outposts and basically skipped all of them. Getting from story mission A to story mission B basically equaled to just finding a vehicle and driving for 5 minutes. The open world therefore is more of a detriment if you liked the older Halo titles (CE, 2, 3, Reach), and the fact that world consists of solely trees, hills and grass doesn't do it any favours. Sometimes you are thrown into forerunner structures, but they get pretty samey after a while and look like copy-paste jobs.

It's definitely an improvement over Halo 4/5 in terms of gameplay but the narrative is just as lacking as Halo 5. It's narrative is worse than Halo 4 though.

grievances: The bosses are just regular enemies with more health (aka bullet sponges). The intro cutscene goes unexplained and none of the characters are known or met in the game itself (who the hell is Atriox?). Cutscenes are way too long, and interrupt gameplay too much early on in the game. The facial expressions of The Weapon are hilariously bad and distracting, and the fact that she is a copy of Cortana can be seen coming from a mile away. Checkpoints are basically existing in a semi-state of permanence, they exist as long as the game session lasts. It is never made clear when it is safe to turn off the game and know that mission progress will be saved.

The actual gameplay is great. Short of that, the game is disappointing. Campaign is missing all the set pieces that made halo great, and the story is a confusing jumble. Multiplayer is structured around buying in game currency for cosmetics, and is lacking some really basic game modes. As a halo player since the original, im worried about the direction the series has taken.

It is time to retire master chief. This is by far the best halo campaign in a long time, but the weakest narrative and much of it is brought down by our dead serious green armored super soldier. Chief has never been a man of many words and the voice acting is not but he is so insufferably cold he is unfun to play as. By far one of the least likable characters to play as, chief would serve better as an NPC than a primary character. A majority of the game your AI does the talking, and you respond with one word answers. It makes the AI look more compelling and the supporting cast seem more reasonable than chief. Chief does not feel like a hero, especially with this plot, he just feels stale.

The gameplay however, does make up for this with one major exception which I will knock out right away. There is no ammo in this game, anywhere. You are forced to swap weapons constantly or else you just won't be able to shoot. There are ammo boxes scattered around for various types of ammo but they're never put intelligently and your ammo reserves are so unbelievably small for some guns. The UNSC shotgun holds 7 in the magazine and 7 in reserve, it is essentially a useless gun due to this.

However, the ammo scarcity is annoying but once again does not ruin the excellent evolution this game has had. Linear levels still exist, but a vast majority of the game is open and allows you to take your own approach to things, much like a far cry or just cause. Halo greatly benefits from this, but its not supremely in depth. There are several "skills" you unlock and each one can be upgraded with skill points, you can play the entire game without ever upgrading any of these and it is still fine, but upgrading the ones you use the most does add some great benefits, I found that the grapple was the only one of steady use even when upgraded but the others were tossed in occasionally and did have their use every few hours or missions.

The world is well made but as many others have pointed out, is very one dimensional, its all one giant biome, no diversity and while i don't enjoy it, it's not awful. The amount of side missions and things to do is well spread out and the world changes as you do these which feels great. There is a lack of vehicle gameplay in the game generally, as most missions take you into a structure and then you spend your time traveling through narrow hallways which lead into basically wider hallways over and over. The final few levels don't do that, which is great but much of the gam e does do that.

First thing with the guns is the sound is incredible, flawless, the sound designers for this game did fantastic, everything sounds perfect. The gun variety however sucks in my opinion, in multiplayer its actually rather fine for that, but in single player there are very few strengths and trade offs to make, some guns are just worthless but you have to use them due to no ammo, or they're just great and need nothing else. I found a majority of the game was spent with the mauler and headshotting enemies. Many classic halo guns and vehicles just don't make appearances which is kind of disappointing but there are some welcome additions. There are unique guns that can be acquired through various means and they never quite explain what the advantages are to that gun and why it differs. I was unable to refill ammo for one by passing over a normal version of the gun which was incredibly frustrating.

Boss fights are a welcome addition, however some fights were incredibly frustrating for little to no reason and their execution wasn't fantastic, many of them felt like 4 phased bullet sponges. You just shoot it for a quarter health, it turns invulnerable and does some dialogue and then you can start shooting again. They're not perfect, but they do break things up and I can't say they're a complete waste of time, many of my favorite moments occurred during these.

Cutscenes were fantastic quality, they decided to not do any loading screens for them and I believe they're all rendered as if it were in game, its very seamless and transitions straight to gameplay most of the time. A majority of these however are just holograms, which is rather bland at times but that in part is due to chief being a bad character for narrative.

    - Vehicle damage is inconsistent. It takes you two years to blow up an enemy vehicle for turret, but it takes the enemy 2 shots.

    - Enemies will know exactly where you all at all times, even if you use the cloak thruster. Don't mod thrusters, the cloak doesn't even work.

    - Enemies will land absolutely insane shots. Ravager shots from 2 football fields away with pointblank accuracy while you're behind cover.

    - Incredibly shallow RPG elements. They shouldn't of even had a mod upgrade system.

    - Most animations are way too slow. It takes 10 seconds to enter a turret or vehicle, you will be dead before you even fire a shot. Same with weapon swapping. Often times the weapon swap won't even work. Vehicles are basically almost not even worth using on legendary.

    - VERY mundane and average story.

Your out of luck, and need to replay the entire game just to get a mission you like! SBMM and CSR continue to be an issue, specifically in social playlists. After a rough launch year - communication and updates seem to be more regular than they were previously.

Cash shop continues to be terribly priced - but with multiplayer being F2P - I'm not surprised. I still would have preferred this been a purchased game without a horrible cash shop. Battlepasses are mediocre - but you only have to purchase 1 to get them all.

In the end, Halo Infinite still scratches the arena FPS itch for me in a way other games don't, which is why I have it as an 7/10 at this point in time and will continue to play.

If you look at the game objectively it is pretty disappointing compared to older titles. The open world does not do much for the gameplay and is pretty bland. There are no major vistas or landmarks to explore and we would have rather seen the old linear missions. The missions itself reuse assets constantly and after the twentieth repeating metallic alien corridor it becomes a slog. Overall a boring experience, I am not sure I could have finished it playing solo.

I played the campaign mode, and felt it was really just mediocre...it is playable, but I couldn't find something that I could pick out and say it did better than other major FPS games in the market. Additionally I really don't understand why mater chief never thought about brining on extra ammo when he went out for missions...

The multiplayer in this game is excellent. However, I mainly like Halo for the story and what we have here isn't really it. The characters suck and the the ring that you're put on is boring. The combat here is excellent, really smooth. But it's just not as good as it used to be.

While the map is beautiful and well done, there is no story, just some copy pasted dungeons that lead to boring mini bosses, rinse and repeat until it's done.
Halo 4 it's a bit better since it has a good story at least

A pretty decent game, albeit perhaps a bit overrated in the "professional critics" space and by some players due to being one of the few AAA non-Sony PS exclusives to not be entirely **** in the last 2-3 years. Also, I'm only talking about single player / campaign and not taking the multiplayer microtransaction shenanigans into account.

This is the first Halo game I ever played, and I have to say, overall, I'm glad I did. I had fun pretty much throughout the whole game with a very few exceptions and the score is only 7/10 mostly due to some things that are very annoying, but do not directly affect gameplay. Yet, those things are still part of the game so can't really dismiss them outright.

First, let's talk technical stuff - game is optimized fairly well and it pulls off some pretty serious draw distances with not too much additional strain on the HW. I had no crashes, no issues with corrupted saves or anything of the sort, no sound stutter, no freezing during loading, etc. Technical side of things is pretty much perfect - or very close to it at least.

Graphically, the game looks very good - as mentioned, there are some serious draw distances the engine pulls off and this really feels like an actual huge open world, even though in reality, it is pretty compact actually. However, mostly, the game relies on design and style rather than raw photorealistic graphics, and some of the textures - even in the HD texture pack - are a bit blurry in places, and some of the models, even after some serious upgrades during the year-long delay, still have some space for improvement. A considerable amount of people complain about lack of variety in locations, and while it is true, it would actually not make much sense given the scope of the game and the story, and what is there is well crafted (for the most part, some remote places do have a few floating rocks and such) and looks good. Some of the places I found were downright gorgeous.

Sound design is pretty decent for the most part, could have a bit beefier sound for some weapons and some vehicles, but it's not too bad. Music is very good, well paced, well placed, not much else to say.

Now, the gameplay - this is one of the best games, core gameplay wise, that I have played in the last couple years. The combat is just so well balanced, it feels so good to get into any fight, the weapons, with two or three exceptions (two a bit UP, one a bit too good), are all useful in one way or another, the enemies have just the right amount of HP and their AI is pretty decent. The open world isn't really all that open, it's more a segmented / semi-open world, styled a bit as a Ubisoft-Lite kind of thing, most of the stuff is map marked, you reveal the map markers as you progress, and there is some stuff unmarked - some easter eggs, some additional encounters and ways to earn some bonus currency to unlock rewards during the campaign. The open world is okay, it never feels entirely empty, and like the combat, it is fairly well paced with down and up tempo moments. It's nothing special and awe inspiring though, it's "just" well balanced and feels good to play, and honestly, that was good enough for me, not all games need to reinvent the wheel. Traversing is made easy by the available vehicles and the grappling hook, though moving on foot is a bit too slow, and sprinting has a barely noticeable speed increase. Also, I know this is a thing that has been in Halo for some time, but the way vehicle controls work (turning with camera, so by mouse) is just atrocious...

As for the story, it's forgettable, honestly. The lore is great, I loved delving into it from recordings, notes, etc., but the story itself is meh and I honestly remember F-all of it, and it's only been a week or so since I finished the game. I've seen some complaints it's worse than older games cause there was not enough focus on it, but honestly, I have played a couple more Halos in the meantime and it's about as meh as the rest of them, as far as I am concerned none of them really go beyond the B-grade action movie level. Two things, or rather characters, I remember all too well, though - for all the bad reasons.

The two main support characters that you drag along throughout the whole game piss me off to no end, they are annoying, useless, ruin the mood - one with incessant whining, the second with crappy, badly timed cringe "jokes". The first one eventually reveals they kinda have a reason and got into this whole mess due to crap decisions and then calms down, but the second is an annoyance from beginning till the end. There was a moment where it looked like I would be rid of them, but no - they stay around and they get somehow even more annoying. F that crap.

Another thing that annoyed me a bit is the friendly soldiers - much dumber than the enemy AI, with worse abilities and behavior in combat, and no way to tell them to f-off back to base...

Conclusion: A fun game, but overall not groundbreaking.

The change to the format of exploring the story for me is wrong direction. However I can see how open world may be expanded upon in the future expansions and that it has potential to make the best Halo game we've seen to date. But for the current time while the first impressions of this open space feel enchanting after a couple hours it'll get boring because by then you'll see everything the world had to offer and you'll be stuck with repeating side objectives.
The main story takes place a year or so after the events of Halo 5. The cutscenes are magnificent in this game and really deserve a praise. Especially the opening one which in my opinion mixes the callbacks to older games with a great setup for a story. I also appreaciate that 343 learnt from their mistakes and don't try to change everything that makes Halo a Halo.
Halo Inifinite's main plot starts out great but it quickly falls flat as we aren't interacting with any of the significant events that have taken place on Zeta Halo. We only watch it unfold in the cutscenes as we see flashbacks of Cortana taking actions. There's little to none setpieces or outstanding scripted events that Halo games were known for. It feels very underwhelming because it just makes you wish for them even more. The main villain established in the beginning cutscene after his introduction is never seen again and instead we get a subpar version of him in the form of Escharaum. Which never does anything interesting but talks. The story could be significantly improved and I'm hoping that alleged upcoming expansions will do just that.
The gameplay is honestly one of if not the best in the series. All the weapons feel better and unique. The tools that Chief is equipped with bring a lot of strategy to the game and are fun to fight the Banished or explore the world with. The upgrades make significant changes to the abilities and that incentivizes players to explore the world in order to make those tools stronger.
The AI feels a little dumber than in the original trilogy but much better than in Halo 4 and 5. I blame it on the openness of the world.
Vehicles feel extremely weak. They are often very easy to take down and there's also much less of them than there were in the previous games. The vehicle sandbox could use a bit of work.
Overall Halo Infinite is not the game that will blow you away but for fans of the series it'll be a fine entry. It's not as good as some people make it out to be because it has it's fair share of problems but it's a fun game that may launch Halo back into the mainstream.

If you are going to play the game, complete the main storyline till you get the five upgrades and then go exploring the world. Upgrade the grappling hook, the shield and the enemy locator to the max as they are actually good upgrades worth doing while the others are pretty useless. The enemy grunts are funny and the propaganda tower commentary is hilarious. The story was not that great as most of it is scattered across the game and you don't actually find out what happened to Cortana or how she was defeated. Halo sadly has a history of ending the final boss of the game pretty badly like they did to the Flood, the Didact and other great villains in the series and sadly it does the same for this game as well. While it seems like this practice of "protecting" our favorite franchises has become more or less common place I find it incredibly disheartening that this game in particular gets so much praise for what in my opinion is a lack luster experience over all. Halo infinite is nothing to write home about.

Story - While Halo isn't know for its revolutionary story telling there is something to be said about the tone and simplicity of the series which really carried a lot of the weight itself. Infinite's story on the other hand promises a grandiose narrative but fails to deliver on most occasions. Its been a while since the events of Halo 5 and for what ever reason the convenient have returns as a new faction known as the banished. Chief becomes stranded with Cortana 2.0 and a nameless pilot on Zeta Halo as they fight to gain control of it. Some random brute chieftain opposes him, there's a strange Alien who is freed from cryo sleep and all kinds of hell break lose. While that may seem interesting at a glace there nothing here to really stick the player to narrative seeing as many of the memorable moments are removed due to, in my opinion, terrible design choices. There is also quite a heavy layer of "meta" context thrown into the mix which at time can feel clever and at other are poorly written and pandering.

Gameplay - Campaign: Being this a largely multiplayer focused titles I'll break gameplay down into two parts. On the campaign end Halo is like its never been before. An open world experience really changes how player engages with and interacts with the world around them for better or worse. There is something to be said about the one size fits all approach the many AAA studios have begun to take. While the addition of the open world is definitely interesting and shakes up the formula, what is lost due to its really hurts the overall experience. Halo is a very set piece oriented series and by adding an open world to the game the combat arena and set pieces which made for incredibly memorable moment are replaced cookie cutter, capture the base/destroy the tower style side quests that add nothing to the game. On top of this the pacing and intrigue of the story is completely lost when a player can simply choose to run off and complete side quests instead of finishing the main story section by section. While gameplay wise the controls and overall feel are incredibly solid, the experience is ruined by a lack of variety in mission types and locations as well as the favoring an uninteresting, lack luster gameplay over the set piece narrative driven experiences we've come to love.

    - Multiplayer: I could probably write a whole dissertation on why the multiplayer here is inherently flawed but I'll try stick to the main points I want to make and just say this to get is out of the way.

    1) Free to play is not an excuse to release and unbalanced/unfinished product
2)Battle passes are just as unethical and predatory a practice as loot boxes
    3) Community support is not a option it is an essential feature to any game of this size

That being said the multiplayer here at its core is the most Halo it has been in a long time. Returning to its roots really serves the game well, some new addition have proven to be valuable to the core gameplay experience. The grappling and repulsar are both wonderful additions, as well as a rebalancing and removal of a lot of copy cat weapons which added too much bulk. At its core this is a very good foundation for a multiplayer game, but its that just that a foundation. To say its bare bones would be an understatement. This multiplayer is straight up missing features and now that the nostalgia has worn off people are starting to realize just how little we got with this release. On top of this, the developers have not only released a battles pass to monetize their fan base with, but locked a core features of Halo behind a pay wall, the customizations. While there is nothing wrong with devs offering addition content at a price (dev's need to eat too) the pointed removal and monetization of standard features really speaks volumes about where the focus of this team is. This coupled with the lack of gameplay options bring up the question of what the hell the team was actually doing for 6 years while making this game. Any one of these on there own wouldn't be a huge deal but when put together its like death by a thousand cut.

Overall: This is not horrible game, just a deeply flawed experience. Halo tries to excel but always seems to miss the mark, and while it may look like it has a brighter future ahead of itself I really wonder if we would be better just letting Chief rest and moving onto something new. However with the announcement of a battle royale mode in development I doubt we will see Chief get the rest he so desperately deserves any time soon.

Guns feel way off. The BR does not feel like the BR, I have no other way to say it. Coming back from Halo 4, the covenant weapons felt so wrong and kinda dumb. Doesn't have the same spirit as the old games, feels like 343 killed the magic that Bungie had created all those years ago. It's very apparent that they had no intention of contining it's legacy, and instead it's THEIR version of Halo. Multiplayer felt okay, melee not being as sticky as it used to felt strange and caused some frustration. The money scheme injected into feels inharently Unhalo, and more like Call of Duty. Overall, good on them for making a game in a pandemic. But I'll probably never come back to the series as long as it's in their hands.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played Halo growing up for the story, music, and multiplayer experience. The only thing that I felt was great about this game was the music. The gameplay is pretty good, but that’s it. Story was abysmal- a very ‘tell don’t show’ approach to storytelling. The main antagonist only appears in goddamn holograms until the very end of the game. The game didn’t launch with forge, working custom games, or a dependable theatre mode. (Not even including firefight.) I’m also going to mention the fact that there are very few maps and game-modes, most of which you will get sick of very quickly because they take place in very similar settings as the campaign. I would have rather waited an entire year for the game to come out with forge and working custom games, not to mention the fact that the game went free to play. It’s almost as if 343i doesn’t give a **** about players and only cared about themselves- evidence being the initial state of micro transactions at launch, the fact that custom games is ‘technically’ IN the game at launch- but it doesn’t bloody work! All in all, this wasn’t the Halo game the fans wanted it to be, it’s the Halo game Microsoft wanted it to be. Expand

The campaign of halo infinite became repetitive after a few hours, the grappling hook is very fun (especially grabbing and launching exploding crates with it), but it sucks that most of the other abilities in the campaign are just overshadowed by it, it would've been cool to be able to constantly switch between them depending on your situation, instead of opening the menu every time, the open world is mostly empty with a fun few secrets, but other than that, a lot of the map feels copy pasted, a lot of the objectives are the same thing over and over, twelve-hundred blue hallways for some reason, and the story I found pretty mediocre. The game was pretty fun, but a lot of things could've been removed, and others could've been more polished, even though in general I had a good time with the game.

For me, the best single-player shooter campaign still remains Doom Eternal, with combat so intense I never got tired of it.

The Multiplayer was pretty fun, but I didn't see a lot of new innovative things, except once again, the grappling hook. There's like 3-4 maps in the game which get repetitive fast, and the only real thing to master is aim and where the weapons spawn on each map. I did like the melee change however, it made the game way more intense in close combat, where you always watch out if your enemy makes a move to melee you, or you're at one HP and you go for a melee before dying.

But, if I'm looking for a fun multiplayer shooter I'd go with Team Fortress 2.

There is actually more than 10 modes in this game, there is about 14 and a decent amount of maps to play on. Now all of the negatives come down to 3 main things: Progression system is very middle of the road, and the incentive of playing for career rank is very poor, It it is better than the req system in Halo 5 Guardians, however, you only earn half of the things that you would have gotten, had there not been a paywall from the battle pass. Also the color customization in this game is horrible. The only real incentive of playing the game, being that half of everything is cosmetic, being locked behind the paywall, is to game for gameplay, or if you are competetive, for skill rank. Overall I don't think the game is bad, but I think it to be quite average. I think it is one of 343's better games, however, I think that it is still disappointing that at game release, it wasn't in this state. There are rumors that after this season in Halo Infinite, that they will be adding firefight and the falcon, and from what I have seen, this is the case. However I will not wait to review when they add firefight, as this is the game at it's most completed since it's release. So overall 7/10!!! Expand

Halo Infinite is the best shooter of 2021. With much anticipation from the fans, 343 Industries brought a great multiplayer experience and a story as a love letter to the Halo series. With some bold innovations, the game pulls all the best from previous iterations and makes it into one of the best FPS games in recent history.

Halo Infinite was supposed to become a flagship title for “the most powerful console in the world,” but in reality we got an interlude of a story devoid of epic set pieces, a template for something greater that may or may not arrive in the future, an empty “open world” punctuated with interior design circa early 2000s. If not for the awesome shootouts, Master Chief should have been jettisoned back into space.

The new Halo game is far from flawless. There’s no co-op, even though there should be, and there’s a boring open world, even though there shouldn’t. The multiplayer feels unfinished as well. Still, at its core, it’s a solid story-driven shooter with a more-than-acceptable Cortana replacement.
