Ignore all the ignorant people who rated this game below a 7. You should play this game if you want a game with a great story line puzzles but mostly action. It is incredible. The enemy AI improved a lot and will challenge even the most skilled gamers. Sure it is linear, but if you are a FPS fan then this game is for you.

It was a great episode and definitely pushed the story further. I left me wanting for the next episode to come out. However, I did think that it was shorten that I was expecting. Episode One seemed to be longer for me than this one. Still, I enjoyed it.

If you're a longtime hardcore HL fan with a brain-- it deserves a 7.

But Ep. 2 lacks the genius of the previous games, and that's sad.

Too many other financial ventures and lower playerbase IQ console-friendliness have diminished Ep2's lustre.

It's repetitive and narrow, and it spoils some of its mysteries when trying to clear them up for the uninitiated, in making a plotline more palatable for the HALO crowd.

The antlion sequence at the beginning of the game is the most boring I think I can ever remember in a HL game. I don't know of a time when I thought to myself 'God I wish this level would end' so early in playing.

I can only hope that going back to the Borealis is a signal that Valve will also be taking a step back in designing Episode 3.
Heck, if Valve has guts, in the last level of Episode 3, we'll all be platform jumping in the combine overworld under the most beautiful skybox gamers have ever seen.

I do hope Valve gets the last one right.

A great continuation of the storyline, and very graphically impressive. Some of the achievements (e.g. getting a gnome into outer space) are great fun to attempt to get, however the very linear gameplay is getting a little tired. I hope Episode 3 gives us more opportunities to interact with the environment and find our own way to places.

Overpriced, over hyped, too short and is obviously a part of a larger, mythical game, called "half-life 2.5", which is made up of all three "episodic" releases. Seriously, $30 for a small expansion with 5 hours game-play is a lot when you think of the price of the original. If they know something, it's how to milk. They're gonna milk this one dry, Valve.

If you've played half-life2, much of this plays like a re-run. I thought way too much has been done in the previous games, and was just recycled here. I give it an 8 for the characters, both major and minor, and the visual and audial quality.

Good continuation although it's a bit of a wonder why it took so long after HL2ep1 to make ep2 since there seems to be so little added to the game... I really don't like the vehicles in HL2 though, they handle like crap. With the engine they have it would have been fun for them to skip the damn bink videos and do everythin in real-time (like ep1...)

I thought the game was too short for the money that it cost to purchase and the time since episode 1. The game "Portal" that was bundled with Episode 2 was much more thought out and compelling.
The storyline did not progress very far and few plot "milestones" were achieved.
The gameplay was not that much different than Episode 1 and I am not sure I understand why this game took so

I would give it 9.5 but I'm unable to set it there. The game continues the saga wonderfully, is a little short but for those who say "it's too similar", it actually is improved: the AI, flashlight, breaking buildings, certain render features, etc. It isn't as groundbreaking as some games are soon likely to be, but it does what it's made to do very well.

Even at its current high score isn't high enough. You just don't find other games polished to this degree next gen or not. I read some reviews knocking it about having the same old game play, but I have to wonder if they actually played the Strider Attack sequence--which is like Mad Max meets War of the Worlds. Simply put, another masterpiece from Valve for this series. To improve on a game engine that was already the best ever made for any game is astounding. I am halfway through it, and I don't need to finish this chapter to know that this one gets a 10!

I love this game. I really want to give this game a 10. While I was playing it I fully enjoyed the puzzles and the computer voice that was my constant "companion". There were multiple times that I actually laughed out loud. Also, the end credits where the best I've ever seen. While I was playing it I fully enjoyed the puzzles and the computer voice that was my constant "companion". There were multiple times that I actually laughed out loud. Also, the end credits where the best I've ever seen. I have talked about the game to many people, and I actually recommend it, with the caveat that perhaps they shouldn't buy the Orange Box JUST for portal alone.

Like I said, I REALLY want to give this game a 10, but when I thought about it, I found there were a couple issues.
The first is similar to what you would hear other people say. It really is too short. This shortness makes you realize how much COULD have been done, but wasn't. It's almost as if the game were written by seinfeld, making his exit at the height of popularity. This does nothing but make you want for more leaving you feeling empty and hungry for more (cake!).

The second thing I was surprised at was that the game actually has a Boss. I found this to be a little bit of a letdown. Throughout the game you are pitted against puzzles, only to end the game with a fight. This reminds me of how the Stephen King book IT was ended. (A FREAKIN' SPIDER!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!). I expected more. Although I liked the module's personalities. Although the humor at the end was exceptional (as I laugh to myself as I write this), I found myself wishing that the final exit was based more on logic and cunning then the final fight that was presented. Really, I felt that GlaDOS deserves better than that.

I end up thinking of this game as an excellent prototype for future games. For that, they get a strong 10. If I hadn't bought the game with the Orange Box, I think I would have felt disappointed due to it's short length. Therefore the game gets an 8 as a standalone game on it's own merits.

However, I hope that valve will take this game and run with it! There's a lot of potential. And I sincerly hope that GlaDOS will be there as well. Oh, I will also be purchasing a plush Weighted Companion Cube.

The 3 is only because I'm a Half-Life junkie. It's not worth the price of the orange box. Here are my main gripes with the game: The wide open spaces that you can travel about in this game are just that - wide open spaces with nothing in them. There's a goal to reach and not too many paths to reach it. It's like being in an amusement park that covers one square mile The 3 is only because I'm a Half-Life junkie. It's not worth the price of the orange box. Here are my main gripes with the game: The wide open spaces that you can travel about in this game are just that - wide open spaces with nothing in them. There's a goal to reach and not too many paths to reach it. It's like being in an amusement park that covers one square mile and has a single ride. To make matters worse, much of the open space is traversed while driving. Valve has made no improvements to the driving experience since HL one. This means that the vehicle drives like a pickup truck on ice with an on/off switch on the gas and brake. The driving is also monotonous. You get to drive through a few boxes, stop for some supplies, and run into an enemy or two. Over and over. My other problem is with the gravity gun. Every puzzle and enemy can be beaten with only the gravity gun. Pick up a piece of debris and chuck it at a bad guy. Move an object out of your way. Repeat about a thousand times. You can let Alex do almost all of the shooting with her limitless supply of ammo and good aim. The achievements are also a bit lame. Kill a bunch of grubs and get a prize. Beat a few hunters and get a prize. Whoopee. I'm not going to play back through to get the ones I missed. The game is fun once through, but I think the linear game-play limits this to a once-through title. I'm almost at the end of the game and I see this as not much more than added levels to HL 2. The actual fighting can be fun and the weapons are cool, if you choose to use them. Alex ruins the game in many places since you can just let her do the shooting and launch a tire or two to help out when she gets overwhelmed. The same can be done with most of the companions that help throughout the game. I paid full price for the orange box just for this game. I wish I would've waited until someone else beat it and bought their copy at a reduced price. this isn't worth $50. Expand

Any way you look at it, Episode Two stands out, even among the Half-Life series, as something special. It may be shorter than the original, but it's a burly experience packed into roughly six hours or so that offers up all the diversity, level design, and thoughtful gameplay we've known while making sure to propel the story forward and leave us wanting more.
  2. More great story blended with improved AI and better firefights. It's starting to retread old ground though.
  3. Episode Two is the most sumptuous chapter of the Half-Life saga, and by a country mile. It's as if Valve's tech and art teams are trying to outdo each other: the Source engine has had a striking technical overhaul that renders textures, materials and curves uncannily well, and the artists clearly relish having a fresh palette to work with.
