It's more art project than game. A short 2D walking simulator with some very light puzzle solving.

An empty but beautiful music box.
The beauty and emotional value are being held back by the gameplay mechanics. There are better ways to tell the story of search and sacrifice but through the simplistic puzzles that don't fit the narrative.

This game is so pretty that it deserves a minimum of a 5/10 just for the art. But everything else ranges from mediocre to astonishingly boring. It's a walking simulator where you can't see your destination, it's a platformer where you can't die, it's a Metroidvania that doesn't want you to backtrack.

There other games that are just or nearly as beautiful while managing to have engaging

There other games that are just or nearly as beautiful while managing to have engaging gameplay and a more engrossing story. The whole thing feels like a sophomore art project with too much funding: "There's a sad girl and her whole world is grey but you can bring the color and music back into her life". The decision to hide major story information behind a collectathon that you can't even complete without a walkthrough or a second playthrough is really annoying, and stops me from recommending Gris even to fans of indie walking simulators. As it stands I can only recommend it to people who want to walk through a painting and don't care for story or challenge.

Gris' subpar gameplay feels so detached from the rest of experience that one must question why bothered making it a videogame.

I was a fan of INSIDE and Little Nightmares they were awesome. ABZU and Journey was also very beautiful and fun. I find this on the same category but not as fun. It needed more puzzles than just walk in the park. If I would compare it to one of the games I already mentioned I would say its more like ABZU though I had more fun with ABZU. The music is the best thing about this game. The art is good and some small "puzzles" were cool. There is nothing more to say. The story you will guessing it by yourself of what it might be. So its hard to say if it was good or bad.

I would recommend it if you are a fan of such games.

I wish it had some kind of easy combat to make it a bit more fun like Ori And The Blind Forest.

It is true: the simple gameplay is the biggest weakness of the game: It is like metroidvania but extremely simple, especially in the beginning of the game. You get more and more skills and need to solve some riddles to advance in the game. But most of the time you are just running.

The only beauty of this game are the unique art design and the great music..
Overall I can recommend this game, because it costs you only about 5 hours of your life to enjoy an unique art design.

Stunningly gorgeous in terms of world design, with some of the best use of colour and geometry I've seen in a long time. I can kinda understand the appeal of such "semi-idle" platformers, and certainly appreciate the art in them (I double dare anyone to claim this is not art), but I guess I just need something more to keep my brain occupied/entertained, either in terms of gameplay mechanics or story. Still, it was a wonderful experience, so I'd recommend it regardless of one's taste - at worst you'll be charmed, and at best madly in love. Expand

GRIS offers basic platforming and few easy puzzles here and there, but the game's superiority lies elsewhere. GRIS is less a game and more an art. Both the soundtrack, visuals and dream-like landscapes are breathtaking. The atmosphere feels out of this world and GRIS can truly be classified as art.

Platforming game where it's nearly no actual gameplay. You basically only walk through the game, which sounds very boring, but the game presents a really good atmosphere with the beautiful graphics and the music.

Artistically this game is great. It looks superb and the music fits.

The whole game is quite atmosperic, but also the world is repetitive and kind of lifeless. It would be nice to immerse yourself in a beatiful living world with the atmosphere and art style of GRIS, but the story and gameplay just don't deliver that.

It is a platform with light puzzles and an incredible artistic bias.

I didn't understand anything about the story but the final cutscene is very good.

Level design good in general and even innovative in some points. However, for some moments that you just walk, I'm not talking about the beautiful contemplative moments, I'm just talking about corridors or straight floors.

This game is beautiful. I think it should be tried by anyone who is not against a slow floaty (dreamy) puzzle platformer.
To me it feels like style over substance, but that is not really the case since new mechanics and locations are introduced deliberately spaced out, so you can soak in the atmosphere. This is the 2d equivalent of Journey

While being astoundingly beautiful, Gris doesn't go very deep, neither into its gameplay nor in exploring the story and themes. It's a serene and mesmerizing experience that struggles to realize its potential as a game.

Every time I play a game that looks absolutely beautiful but has boring game play I feel sad. I can't say anything negative about the art style because it looks stunning, but this is a game and in my opinion game play is the number one important thing in a game.
Everything you do is just walk from A to B and solve "puzzles" if you want to call them that. It has way too easy jump and run

If you like these kind of games that's totally fine and I have nothing against story telling and deeper meaning. I just think that you have to first come up with a concept to combine your story with a game, because if you just have a story, you can just make a (short) film or a video.

i didn't pay much attention while playing it, so i own this game a re-play. From what i remember the visuals and the sound were amazing, besides that i didnt took into account the actual theme of the game. Might up the score after replaying it

Gris evokes memories of Disney's Fantasia, a wordless animated movie which creates an exciting audiovisual experience by combining colors and music.
