Yes, the music and artistic style in this game is superb, but it could have been an animated short film and it would have been the same outcome. They focused on designing a "beautiful game" and they forgot to make a video game. The narcotic gameplay is nothing but a cliché of any platformer/metroidvania game, but way simpler and flavourless. Undertale showed that a lower-budget indie game can be a game with a simple but interesting gameplay mechanics, a storytelling that could leave you with tears in your eyes, an excellent OST and a charming artistic style.

This game failed to be a Journey' wannabe.

An empty but beautiful music box.
The beauty and emotional value are being held back by the gameplay mechanics. There are better ways to tell the story of search and sacrifice but through the simplistic puzzles that don't fit the narrative.

This game is so pretty that it deserves a minimum of a 5/10 just for the art. But everything else ranges from mediocre to astonishingly boring. There other games that are just or nearly as beautiful while managing to have engaging gameplay and a more engrossing story. The whole thing feels like a sophomore art project with too much funding: "There's a sad girl and her whole world is grey but you can bring the color and music back into her life". The decision to hide major story information behind a collectathon that you can't even complete without a walkthrough or a second playthrough is really annoying, and stops me from recommending Gris even to fans of indie walking simulators. As it stands I can only recommend it to people who want to walk through a painting and don't care for story or challenge.

Such a moving game, the music is top notch, i went to this game expecting it to be boring but at the end I had tears in my eyes. I read somewhere that this game is a representation of a girl who lost her best-friend and never got over her loss. The music alone got this game a 10/10

    Yes,pretty good visuals,okay i'll give you the atmosphere too,and the sounds+music overall.
But personally i don't like is as a game, definitely a piece of art but not a game that'll make you DO something.
Don't be fooled by the score it is still a pretty good experience.

Gris is a game that is trying really hard to be art.

This is unfortunate, because it is neither very good as a game nor very good as a work of art.

The problem is, a game needs to be engaging, but Gris is not very engaging. The simple 2D platforming that makes up the gameplay doesn’t do anything novel, and the game mechanics don’t feel like they have anything to do with Gris’s theme of dealing with grief. Instead, the main character can jump, turn into a block to smash fragile ground, swim, double jump and glide, hop off of small clouds of birds to propel herself higher (only where they are available in the environment), or sing and make flowers bloom or turn on stuff.

    Yay.

The singing is the closest thing to something that ties into the theme of grief, as you sing to yourself to soothe yourself, but… that’s about it.

But the worst of it is that there’s nothing really here gameplay wise. Everything here has been done before, better, in other games, and the main character isn’t particularly agile nor exciting to control. The level design, too, while aesthetically pleasing, doesn’t feel like it does anything novel, nor is it particularly difficult, meaning it cannot challenge you on that axis either.

    Instead, it simply… is.

And while acceptable, serviceable gameplay is alright if you have a really knock it out of the park story, this game’s story barely exists at all. And this is the problem:

A work of art needs to say something, but Gris does not.

Gris simply IS. And while it’s okay to have some pretty abstract thing, something that you’re going to sit in front of for several hours needs to do more than be aesthetically appealing, it needs to have some point. But Gris does not. Grief is a process.

Yeah, I know. But… okay? What do you have to say about grief?

Nothing. The story is extremely vague and abstract, and the main character is so vague as to not really be much of a character at all. Saying they’re even one-dimensional is generous, given there is no dialogue and we are given little to no context for most of the game.

Thus, Gris fails on both fronts – it isn’t a fun game to play, and it isn’t a meaningful work of art that moves you. While it may be aesthetically pleasing, it’s hollow and empty, and doesn’t have anything to say.

You might send about four hours or so beating this game, but I couldn’t recommend spending the time on it even if you got it for free; there’s just better things to do that will leave more of an impact on you.

Apart from the main gameplay and objectives, there are also bonus, optional items that can be collected, which is a great addition.

Speaking of art, that‘s definitely the highlight of the game. The visuals look really great, the way how the main character‘s looks change when using her abilities is just gorgeous and some levels have fantastic contrast and visual designs which look great on a big high contrast screen, like an OLED or similar. The music is equally great and contributes a lot of the emotions invoked by the game.

The game is not perfect: At times, the colors on screen make it hard to figure out what is what. Also, the puzzles get a little too convoluted towards the end for my taste. Overall though, the game offers quite an unique, emotional and enjoyable experience, somewhat similar to Journey. Since it takes only about 3 to 4 hours, I would definitely recommend to give it a try, though I would not call it a must-play.

I can kinda understand the appeal of such "semi-idle" platformers, and certainly appreciate the art in them (I double dare anyone to claim this is not art), but I guess I just need something more to keep my brain occupied/entertained, either in terms of gameplay mechanics or story. Still, it was a wonderful experience, so I'd recommend it regardless of one's taste - at worst you'll be charmed, and at best madly in love. Expand

GRIS offers basic platforming and few easy puzzles here and there, but the game's superiority lies elsewhere. GRIS is less a game and more an art. Both the soundtrack, visuals and dream-like landscapes are breathtaking. The atmosphere feels out of this world and GRIS can truly be classified as art.

This game is no an exception: Incredibly stylish and beautiful picture with a verified style. It would seem that there are only continuous lines, circles and extremely simple silhouettes... but how pleasant it is to be in the World of this filigree minimalistic adventure... Normal sounding of the environment, and VERY pleasant music... The first half of the game is extremely simple and straightforward. But from the second half, more interesting moments and riddles begin. But due to the fact that the whole game is like an interactive picture, the first half is not boring. It is pleasant and interesting to just look at, and listen to it.
The plot of the game tells about the psychological problems of the main character, in a
philosophically drawn World. Something like that... and throughout the game we help her overcome this, learning some skills, exploring this "inner World" of her. You could say, as some wrote, that this is a "Girly Game", well... if you are a man-lumberjack-with-a-beard, or you only like action, shooters, epic and etc. - yes, this is a "Girly game" ...For those who are open to emotions, who like something unusual - this is a small and very beautiful game-play art, which I strongly advise to acquire and play.
P.S.: I guess the game was inspired by the old "Journey", so it managed to motivate me to check it out as well.

GRIS is more a visual art piece about conveying emotion from the artistic display.
Because of this, we get a rather symbolic narrative expressing stages of 'grief'. This game has very simplistic platforming to help add interactivity with this experience that you take part in.
I personally respect this piece of material greatly. I found it to be moving, beautiful, something of what i

Highly recommended for those wanting to try something different and more of a visual treat then mechanical masterpiece.

Great game, and like many have said, it's a beautiful experience, although at the beginning felt like a bit of a slog, and near the final area the game started feeling a bit pandered, generally speaking Gris is a fantastic experience that serves as a shot of emotion to the senses, both because of how visually striking it is, but also because of how enjoyable it is to play and to listen to.Great game, and like many have said, it's a beautiful experience, although at the beginning felt like a bit of a slog, and near the final area the game started feeling a bit pandered, generally speaking Gris is a fantastic experience that serves as a shot of emotion to the senses, both because of how visually striking it is, but also because of how enjoyable it is to play and to listen to.

The game uses its level design, and simplicity in its mechanics to create something truly special, it uses a combination of several tools in its design to make you be observant, to attempt to find solutions in places where you usually wouldn't look.

The game doesn't help you any more than that, making you feel satisfied whenever you find the solution by yourself, the only time this didn't flow nearly as well, was near the end where I arrived at the final segment of the game but I was still missing some "stars" that were needed for me to progress, forcing me to backtrack for a bit, but either way, this is a very enjoyable experience, and a very enjoyable game.

Relatively short but still good. It would get a higher score (at least a 9) if it was more complex in a sense of not only more levels but also more complex mechanics (exploration didn't feel that rewarding because of that lack of complexity but it was still great).

GRIS is a beautiful game with relaxing soundtrack and visuals and a deep story and some creative and fresh puzzle designs. The game might not be for everyone, and it can get stalled at times but overall, it's a beautiful 2d platformer worth the try.

My god, I wish all games could be this beautiful and inspired. Visually gorgeous, using a mix of vector art, classical animation, and watercolor overlays.

Puzzles and platforming are well conceived. Levels are generally a joy to explore, but also have some frustrating one-way points where you can't go back and check for secrets -- this means when you come to a fork, you have a 50%

Puzzles and platforming are well conceived. Levels are generally a joy to explore, but also have some frustrating one-way points where you can't go back and check for secrets -- this means when you come to a fork, you have a 50% chance of permanently missing something.

Lastly, there are only a few things your character ever interacts with -- it's mainly just her wandering through some highly symbolic dream-like environments. Unfortunately, neither the sparse inhabitants nor the puzzles seem to share the symbolic theme -- so things boil down to "smash the floor in a desert level", then "smash the floor in a water level", etc.. I wish each level had some kind of symbolic puzzle / creature which the player had to overcome, calm, or befriend -- concrete positive steps to counter-balance all the other (visually stunning) symbolic images of loss, hopelessness, fear, and impotence.

If the design team were to address this handful of points, this could easily be a game of the decade in its class.

Gris evokes memories of Disney's Fantasia, a wordless animated movie which creates an exciting audiovisual experience by combining colors and music.
