Jun 5, 2026For me, the Gothic Remake is the ultimate gaming highlight of 2026—the refinement of a classic and a sheer delight for action-RPG fans! Only technical flaws and a somewhat overly deferential adherence to the source material detract from this fan dream come true.
-
Jun 15, 2026The time I spent playing the Gothic remake was — and I still find it hard to believe — an experience truly reminiscent of what shook my world 25 years ago. It’s not just about nostalgia — it’s about respect for the series from Alkimia.
-
Jun 8, 2026Gothic 1 Remake looks great, feels amazing to play, and there are so many great choices you can make here. You can be a mage, a warrior, the ultimate bowman or anything you see fit. Plus, following the game’s story will bring many exciting challenges on its own, from using spells to fighting unexpected enemies. Overall, it’s an excellent adventure that everyone should check out, especially if you never played the original. Gothic 1 Remake is the ultimate version of a cult classic, and being able to relive this genre-defining RPG with all the modern bells and whistles was a delight.
-
Jun 5, 2026Gothic 1 Remake is one of the most confident games of the year. It does not compromise on the 2001 vision of giving the reigns to the player and has next to no guidance through a merciless and unforgiving world. This leads to a gameplay experience that is perfect for some, but off-putting for others, but the promise of making the original Gothic accessible through large and small changes, most notably the presentation of the game, is thoroughly fulfilled.
-
Jun 18, 2026Gothic 1 Remake faithfully revives the original’s harsh RPG design with a strong atmosphere, rewarding progression, and memorable world-building. Technical issues and its unforgiving nature keep it from greatness.
-
Jun 24, 2026Gothic 1 Remake is a rough yet refreshing return to an older style of role playing game. Dated quest design, awkward combat and a frustrating economy hold it back, while its hostile world, meaningful exploration and refusal to guide the player make the Colony feel genuinely dangerous. Few modern RPGs are willing to make the player feel this small, and that courage makes the journey worth taking.
-
Jun 23, 2026Gothic 1 Remake is a superlative reinterpretation of an all-time classic game. Whilst the initial difficulty level and complete lack of handholding or quest markers etc. might be a hard sell to gamers used to more modern design choices, there is such a wealth of gaming experience to be enjoyed here. The obstacles set up mean that every small amount of progress feels hard earned and the sense of achievement is far greater than in many modern games. The sheer thrill of exploration and character choices make for an RPG that has been liberated from the technical limitations of its origin.
-
Jun 18, 2026Gothic 1 Remake is definitely a game I recommend to RPG fans, and it's a strong enough vision of a Remake that I honestly feel that anyone interested in Gothic in general could start here and get the same type of experience instead of playing the original if they wanted to (though I am glad I played both and encourage that as well). However, it is a game that does require some patience and tolerance for friction and just a little bit of tedium, which might not be to everyone's taste. Gothic 1 Remake was clearly developed by a team that respects the original game and knew how to reimagine it for a modern audience without compromising what originally made it so special and influential so many years later, creating a very remarkable game in its own right.
-
Jun 15, 2026Gothic Remake has plenty of both good and bad aspects: the work by the team at Alkimia faithfully captures the spirit and brutality of the original game, immersing it in an incredible visual style, but just like 25 years ago, the title is plagued by technical issues and bugs of various kinds. That said, it’s a rediscovery of one of the best RPGs ever produced by the gaming industry, capable of captivating players with a brilliant story and a tangible, satisfying sense of progression. Perfect for longtime fans, and perhaps there are a few curious newcomers out there who will discover Gothic this way, through a generally solid remake.
-
Jun 15, 2026Gothic 1 Remake is exactly the kind of RPG I wish we saw more often. It doesn't try to impress you with constant cutscenes or turn you into a hero within the first few hours. Instead, it drops you into a dangerous and punishing world and lets you earn everything yourself. Not every mechanic is great; some systems feel outdated, and there are definitely moments where the game tests your patience. But when everything comes together, the sense of progression and adventure is inescapable.
-
Jun 12, 2026Despite all the games it influenced over the years, Gothic still stands alone. This remake is both faithful and fresh, providing much-needed improvements and wider accessibility in spite of its unforgiving nature and undeniable eurojank (a term the original Gothic helped establish). Newcomers may feel the game is a relic in some ways, but anyone interested in an underplayed yet seminal classic owes it to themselves to give Gothic 1 Remake a shot.
-
Jun 12, 2026The spotty performance and the lingering clunkiness keep it from greatness, and not every player will vibe with a game that actively refuses to make their life easier. But if you give the Colony the time it demands, you will find one of the most immersive RPG worlds ever made, looking better than it ever has.
-
Jun 10, 2026Gothic is an idiosyncratic and sometimes stale remake, with a multitude of technical issues. Yet the purity and strength of the original game’s vision shines through.
-
Jun 8, 2026The Gothic 1 Remake is a beautiful graphical upgrade of one of the most incredible RPGs of all time, and I have no doubt that returning fans will love it. However, the game’s performance issues dampen the mood, and certain new bugs and a lack of quality-of-life improvements make it less than a perfect remake. These issues and the lack of modernizing polish may also make it harder for new players to get into the game, especially when paired with the obviously and purposefully dated, difficult gameplay.
-
Jun 8, 2026Brilliant, bizarre, and a bit too obnoxious for its own good, Gothic 1 Remake is a solid remake of a hugely influential RPG. Dedicated to keeping the deeply unique and unfriendly spirit of the original alive, this still feels like little else, though I can't help but wish it was willing to add more polish.
-
Jun 5, 2026Gothic Remake is a fantastic, atmospheric reimagining that more than does justice to the original.
-
Jun 16, 2026Gothic embodies a philosophy regarding RPGs—and video games in general—that has all but vanished today. That is why it is so surprising to see it return in its original form, yet with a completely new look. If Alkimia Interactive’s goal was to bring that same experience back to screens without reinventing the wheel, the mission was a resounding success. We can only hope to one day get our hands on a *Gothic 2* remake as well. However, technical flaws and bugs remain—particularly concerning quest progression—that deserved more attention. Likewise, a more modern take on the combat system would have enhanced the game's overall appeal without necessarily betraying its identity. Ultimately, the Gothic 1 remake is a project of stubborn fidelity; it successfully preserves the original game's charm, yet it is perhaps too timid to distinguish between intentional ruggedness and inherited clunkiness.
-
Jun 10, 2026The remake is Gothic through and through, with thoughtful improvements and a few old weaknesses. It's worth checking out—and not just for those feeling nostalgic.
-
Jun 21, 2026Against all odds, the Gothic 1 Remake is an incredibly faithful adaptation of the original cult-classic while also making both visual and mechanical improvements. While it certainly isn’t perfect, it manages to make an important part of gaming history more accessible and doesn’t ever forsake its vision to appeal to modern audiences. It may be too frustrating for some, but anyone ready to embrace brutal life in the Colony will find a lot to be immersed in.
-
Jun 15, 2026Punishing yet ultimately gratifying, this remake revives the oppressive atmosphere and uncompromising difficulty of the original. It rewards patience with deep sociological complexity despite the intentionally clunky combat and total absence of modern guidance. This polarizing experience successfully prioritizes heritage over accessibility, delivering a brutal journey for dedicated fans.
-
Jun 12, 2026Alkimia has delivered a game that captures the strengths of its predecessor, led by a brilliantly constructed world and the brutal harshness of life in the Mining Valley. Defying contemporary trends, Gothic Remake doesn’t hold the player’s hand and rewards them with a great sense of satisfaction as they make progress. It’s just a shame that we’ve ended up with a game plagued by so many bugs.
-
Jun 10, 2026The Gothic hero is back in decent form. It boasts modern graphics and offers a compelling story and precise character development. However, the progression is slow and demanding, which can be frustrating in the first few hours.
-
Jun 8, 2026Gothic 1 Remake reinvents a timeless PC classic from the 2000s, and does so in a way that's bound to be controversial. The original Gothic was already a game that aged rather poorly, so remaking it in such a faithful way is admirable, but leaves the game without the ability to become what it could be. The core concept of Gothic is brilliant in its potential, but it was always held back by hardware limitations. The remake makes it look and sound nicer, but didn't go as far as it should have to take advantage of what it has.
-
Jun 5, 2026Gothic 1 Remake manages to revive the spirit and atmosphere of the original, faithfully following the predecessor’s guideline. While the game has its own problems and issues, it still worth playing. Either you are a veteran and know your way through the colony, or a newbie who doesn’t know the prison rules, you will receive a satisfying experience.
-
Jun 22, 2026But if you appreciate an experience that takes you seriously and gives you many ways to play, this new version is quite magnificent in its own way. Gothic knows what it's doing, even if it doesn't always succeed. It's also disappointing how technically poor this release is. Hopefully the developer will fix the biggest mistakes as quickly as possible, because they are quite big.
-
Jun 15, 2026Gothic 1 Remake stays remarkably faithful to the original, perhaps even a little too faithful, offering a demanding journey that refuses to hold your hand and makes every bit of progress feel earned. The challenge remains rewarding throughout, but the combat continues to feel stiff and cumbersome even after significant advancement, which undermines the action-RPG experience. Audiovisually, the remake is largely impressive aside from its often lifeless NPCs, making it an easy recommendation for longtime fans but a game newcomers should approach with caution.
-
Jun 15, 2026Gothic Remake stays true to its old-school roots, rewarding patience while punishing mistakes. Still a bit rough (around the edges) but rewarding for those willing to embrace its unforgiving design.
-
Jun 12, 2026Gothic 1 Remake is undeniably the best way to play this cult classic RPG, even if certain aspects of it have aged like milk.
-
Jun 10, 2026It is very faithful to the original, for better or worse, and the surface is still rough, prickly and full of Euro-jank. But if you scratch beneath it long enough, a rather fine gem emerges. A slightly grubby and uneven gem, to be sure, but still a gem.
-
Jun 9, 2026To its great credit, Gothic 1 Remake does not try to smooth out the challenge or design approach of the 2001 original, choosing instead to make significant graphical upgrades and add layers of improvement to combat and other mechanics. It turns on its head the front-loaded pacing gamers have come to expect, holding off the most rewarding gameplay for many hours in. It can be punishing, not because the player lacks skill, but because its world is just that way. Updates and patches will hopefully iron out performance and the bugs, but Gothic 1 Remake will always primarily appeal to RPG fans undaunted by its unforgiving approach to the genre.
-
Jun 15, 2026We could spend time debating whether the gameplay system of Gothic 1 has aged well or poorly, but we would end up stuck in the usual divide between those who love its classic gameplay and those who would have preferred a more modern overhaul. The key point is that, knowing you are approaching a no-compromise gaming experience with deliberately clunky mechanics, Gothic 1 Remake offers an experience that is, at least in theory, just as enjoyable today as it was in 2001. In practice, however, Gothic 1 Remake is held back by its technical performance, with an abundance of bugs, inaccuracies, and even the occasional crash, making it difficult to fully enjoy everything the game has to offer. It is a real shame that a title with such a dedicated fanbase—and the potential to gain new ones—suffers from such a problematic state. Even after several patches, the situation does not appear to have improved significantly. Gothic 1 Remake could be a solid action RPG, capable of bringing back an excellent blend of exploration and gameplay systems, but at the moment the technical side acts as a bottleneck. Perhaps, with a major code overhaul, the team at Alkimia Interactive could manage to resolve at least part of the issues, but for now the undeniable strengths of the project struggle to outweigh its weaknesses. That said, with a healthy and generous dose of patience, it is still possible to experience this original adventure—revived (but not fully refined)—which remains, even today, full of charm.
-
Jun 11, 2026Even though it’s far from perfect, Gothic 1 Remake succeeds in significantly modernizing the original game while preserving everything that made it so charming. It’s still an old-school RPG, offering players a great deal of freedom and the chance to lose themselves in a world that’s both extremely harsh and distinctive, without ever holding their hand. But now, it’s much richer visually, and some of the gameplay flaws have been smoothed out a bit. This doesn’t erase all the clunkiness and flaws of the original game, while the improvements to combat and the interface clearly didn’t go far enough. The numerous bugs and performance issues are also real problems at this point. Even for Gothic fans and those seeking an old-school experience, it’s best to wait before diving in, for an optimal gaming experience.
-
Jun 9, 2026Gothic 1 Remake is a remake that clearly shows a lot of effort went into it. However, it has remained so faithful to its roots that, rather than being a challenging action-RPG adventure, it has ended up as a game that is overly archaic, repetitive, and likely to appeal only to a specific niche of players. On top of that, with serious performance issues and bugs stemming from the Unreal Engine, it falls slightly short of expectations as a remake.
-
Jun 15, 2026Gothic 1 Remake is stubbornly faithful to the original to the point where it wears its flaws just like its triumphs, a frustrating experience.
-
Jun 10, 2026When you look at the whole picture, the Gothic 1 Remake is an extremely faithful recreation of the original - one that will likely put off most players except hardcore fans who crave games that feel like they hate you more than an ex after a toxic breakup.
-
Jun 5, 2026Gothic Remake presents the cult classic in a gorgeous new look and with a handful of carefully-placed changes and improvements. It remains as relentless and challenging as fans remember and, just like the original, refuses to hold your hand. During our test, technical issues and messy AI ruined our fun and ultimately doomed our playthrough to get irretrievably stuck. If Alkimia Interactive can fix the technical problems and bugs, the remake will without a doubt become the best method to experience Gothic once more or for the very first time. Whether or not they can pull it off, remains to be seen.
-
Jun 5, 2026Gothic 1 Remake may have made concessions for new players, but remains an RPG for people who think Daggerfall was the last good Bethesda game.
-
Jun 5, 2026If you want that old Gothic feeling and gameplay – and make sure you do! –, then by all means, buy this. For everyone else, I have a list of over 50 RPGs from the last 10 years that all stand in some way on the shoulder of this ancient giant. And they are all way better games.
-
Jun 10, 2026For the hardcore fans of the franchise that just wanted a 1:1 remake of the original without anything added or removed, Gothic Remake is a dream come true. But even the avid Gothic fans are not safe from the performance horrors caused by the Unreal Engine 5, and that makes the Gothic Remake not everybody’s cup of tea.

Jun 5, 2026Gothic Remake’s foundations are strong because Alkimia chose to protect the parts that made the original special: the punishing freedom, the hand built world, and the sense that you have to earn your place. As of now, my stance is that a newcomer with no nostalgia for the series and no patience for jankiness may well bounce right off it. If you loved old Gothic, every instinct here points toward something made by people who get it. [Review in Progress]

Jun 22, 2026It's difficult, in a word, to review Gothic Remake without falling into all the same gushing about the original, but vastly prettier and with countless small, but cumulatively powerful improvements. It even has a speck of jankiness that's funny often enough to outweigh the times it's irritating. Gothic was a standard setter for its genre even decades on, and now it's the same too for the very concept of a remake. Sometimes, just sometimes, looking backwards really is the way forward.
