The time I spent playing the Gothic remake was — and I still find it hard to believe — an experience truly reminiscent of what shook my world 25 years ago. It’s not just about nostalgia — it’s about respect for the series from Alkimia.

Gothic 1 Remake looks great, feels amazing to play, and there are so many great choices you can make here. You can be a mage, a warrior, the ultimate bowman or anything you see fit. Plus, following the game’s story will bring many exciting challenges on its own, from using spells to fighting unexpected enemies. Overall, it’s an excellent adventure that everyone should check out, especially if you never played the original. Gothic 1 Remake is the ultimate version of a cult classic, and being able to relive this genre-defining RPG with all the modern bells and whistles was a delight.

Gothic 1 Remake is one of the most confident games of the year. It does not compromise on the 2001 vision of giving the reigns to the player and has next to no guidance through a merciless and unforgiving world. This leads to a gameplay experience that is perfect for some, but off-putting for others, but the promise of making the original Gothic accessible through large and small changes, most notably the presentation of the game, is thoroughly fulfilled.

Whilst the initial difficulty level and complete lack of handholding or quest markers etc. might be a hard sell to gamers used to more modern design choices, there is such a wealth of gaming experience to be enjoyed here. The obstacles set up mean that every small amount of progress feels hard earned and the sense of achievement is far greater than in many modern games. The sheer thrill of exploration and character choices make for an RPG that has been liberated from the technical limitations of its origin.

Gothic 1 Remake is definitely a game I recommend to RPG fans, and it's a strong enough vision of a Remake that I honestly feel that anyone interested in Gothic in general could start here and get the same type of experience instead of playing the original if they wanted to (though I am glad I played both and encourage that as well). However, it is a game that does require some patience and tolerance for friction and just a little bit of tedium, which might not be to everyone's taste. Gothic 1 Remake was clearly developed by a team that respects the original game and knew how to reimagine it for a modern audience without compromising what originally made it so special and influential so many years later, creating a very remarkable game in its own right.

That said, it’s a rediscovery of one of the best RPGs ever produced by the gaming industry, capable of captivating players with a brilliant story and a tangible, satisfying sense of progression. Perfect for longtime fans, and perhaps there are a few curious newcomers out there who will discover Gothic this way, through a generally solid remake.

Gothic 1 Remake is exactly the kind of RPG I wish we saw more often. It doesn't try to impress you with constant cutscenes or turn you into a hero within the first few hours. Dedicated to keeping the deeply unique and unfriendly spirit of the original alive, this still feels like little else, though I can't help but wish it was willing to add more polish.

We can only hope to one day get our hands on a *Gothic 2* remake as well. However, technical flaws and bugs remain—particularly concerning quest progression—that deserved more attention. Likewise, a more modern take on the combat system would have enhanced the game's overall appeal without necessarily betraying its identity. Ultimately, the Gothic 1 remake is a project of stubborn fidelity; it successfully preserves the original game's charm, yet it is perhaps too timid to distinguish between intentional ruggedness and inherited clunkiness.

The remake is Gothic through and through, with thoughtful improvements and a few old weaknesses. It's worth checking out—and not just for those feeling nostalgic.

Defying contemporary trends, Gothic Remake doesn’t hold the player’s hand and rewards them with a great sense of satisfaction as they make progress. It’s just a shame that we’ve ended up with a game plagued by so many bugs.

The Gothic hero is back in decent form. It boasts modern graphics and offers a compelling story and precise character development. However, the progression is slow and demanding, which can be frustrating in the first few hours.

Hopefully the developer will fix the biggest mistakes as quickly as possible, because they are quite big.

It is very faithful to the original, for better or worse, and the surface is still rough, prickly and full of Euro-jank. But if you scratch beneath it long enough, a rather fine gem emerges. A slightly grubby and uneven gem, to be sure, but still a gem.

To its great credit, Gothic 1 Remake does not try to smooth out the challenge or design approach of the 2001 original, choosing instead to make significant graphical upgrades and add layers of improvement to combat and other mechanics. It turns on its head the front-loaded pacing gamers have come to expect, holding off the most rewarding gameplay for many hours in. It can be punishing, not because the player lacks skill, but because its world is just that way. Updates and patches will hopefully iron out performance and the bugs, but Gothic 1 Remake will always primarily appeal to RPG fans undaunted by its unforgiving approach to the genre.

We could spend time debating whether the gameplay system of Gothic 1 has aged well or poorly, but we would end up stuck in the usual divide between those who love its classic gameplay and those who would have preferred a more modern overhaul. The key point is that, knowing you are approaching a no-compromise gaming experience with deliberately clunky mechanics, Gothic 1 Remake offers an experience that is, at least in theory, just as enjoyable today as it was in 2001. In practice, however, Gothic 1 Remake is held back by its technical performance, with an abundance of bugs, inaccuracies, and even the occasional crash, making it difficult to fully enjoy everything the game has to offer. It is a real shame that a title with such a dedicated fanbase—and the potential to gain new ones—suffers from such a problematic state. Even after several patches, the situation does not appear to have improved significantly. Gothic 1 Remake could be a solid action RPG, capable of bringing back an excellent blend of exploration and gameplay systems, but at the moment the technical side acts as a bottleneck. Perhaps, with a major code overhaul, the team at Alkimia Interactive could manage to resolve at least part of the issues, but for now the undeniable strengths of the project struggle to outweigh its weaknesses. That said, with a healthy and generous dose of patience, it is still possible to experience this original adventure—revived (but not fully refined)—which remains, even today, full of charm.

Even though it’s far from perfect, Gothic 1 Remake succeeds in significantly modernizing the original game while preserving everything that made it so charming. It’s still an old-school RPG, offering players a great deal of freedom and the chance to lose themselves in a world that’s both extremely harsh and distinctive, without ever holding their hand. But now, it’s much richer visually, and some of the gameplay flaws have been smoothed out a bit. This doesn’t erase all the clunkiness and flaws of the original game, while the improvements to combat and the interface clearly didn’t go far enough. The numerous bugs and performance issues are also real problems at this point. Even for Gothic fans and those seeking an old-school experience, it’s best to wait before diving in, for an optimal gaming experience.

Gothic 1 Remake is a remake that clearly shows a lot of effort went into it. However, it has remained so faithful to its roots that, rather than being a challenging action-RPG adventure, it has ended up as a game that is overly archaic, repetitive, and likely to appeal only to a specific niche of players. On top of that, with serious performance issues and bugs stemming from the Unreal Engine, it falls slightly short of expectations as a remake.

Gothic 1 Remake is stubbornly faithful to the original to the point where it wears its flaws just like its triumphs, a frustrating experience.

When you look at the whole picture, the Gothic 1 Remake is an extremely faithful recreation of the original - one that will likely put off most players except hardcore fans who crave games that feel like they hate you more than an ex after a toxic breakup.

Gothic Remake presents the cult classic in a gorgeous new look and with a handful of carefully-placed changes and improvements. It remains as relentless and challenging as fans remember and, just like the original, refuses to hold your hand. During our test, technical issues and messy AI ruined our fun and ultimately doomed our playthrough to get irretrievably stuck. If Alkimia Interactive can fix the technical problems and bugs, the remake will without a doubt become the best method to experience Gothic once more or for the very first time. Whether or not they can pull it off, remains to be seen.

Gothic 1 Remake may have made concessions for new players, but remains an RPG for people who think Daggerfall was the last good Bethesda game.

If you want that old Gothic feeling and gameplay – and make sure you do! –, then by all means, buy this. For everyone else, I have a list of over 50 RPGs from the last 10 years that all stand in some way on the shoulder of this ancient giant. And they are all way better games.
