Jun 24, 2026Gothic 1 Remake is a rough yet refreshing return to an older style of role playing game. Dated quest design, awkward combat and a frustrating economy hold it back, while its hostile world, meaningful exploration and refusal to guide the player make the Colony feel genuinely dangerous. Few modern RPGs are willing to make the player feel this small, and that courage makes the journey worth taking.

Jun 23, 2026Gothic 1 Remake is a superlative reinterpretation of an all-time classic game. Whilst the initial difficulty level and complete lack of handholding or quest markers etc. might be a hard sell to gamers used to more modern design choices, there is such a wealth of gaming experience to be enjoyed here. The obstacles set up mean that every small amount of progress feels hard earned and the sense of achievement is far greater than in many modern games. The sheer thrill of exploration and character choices make for an RPG that has been liberated from the technical limitations of its origin.

Jun 22, 2026But if you appreciate an experience that takes you seriously and gives you many ways to play, this new version is quite magnificent in its own way. Gothic knows what it's doing, even if it doesn't always succeed. It's also disappointing how technically poor this release is. Hopefully the developer will fix the biggest mistakes as quickly as possible, because they are quite big.
