It's an OK-game. But RPG elements & character progression are relatively limited, and story (albeit good) is very linear.

As an action game, it doesn't really deliver. The mechanics surrounding combat are just too simple, lacking depth and variety, despite the degree of personalization of the stats through gear upgrades. The plot barely gets the job done, uninteresting and with a clear focus on teenagers. I didn't really notice the OST.
Overall, it is an ok experience, entertaining for the most part, but seeing these marks, i can tell it's one of the most overrated titles of the last decade.

An extremely forgetful installment in the God of War Franchise. It attempts to do so many things and fails at almost all of them. The one thing I can say I enjoyed thoroughly about the game was the boss segments. The story was extremely dull and left something to be desired. While 100%ing the game on the hardest difficulty, I can absolutely say it's just not for me.

I was bored to death from the gameplay. The axe was a big disappointment. Combos are not memorable and not impressive. You press something and something happens on the screen, but it doesn't make any difference, except maybe the amount of damage and animation. So you stick to one or two, and only if you remember about them at all.

Another disappointment is the variety of enemies. Most of the time it's just a bunch of dudes with different color and different amounts of health. There's a flying meatball, something like a witch and a "Big Dude" too, that's all. Only one cool boss fight with dragon. All fights differ only in the number of button mashing, no strategy and no thinking is required. "Repetition" is a great description of all enemy encounters in the game.

Loot and the interface for it are astonishingly awful. It should be used in universities as an example of poor design.
Constantly something new drops out of enemies and crates. A ton of pop-ups appear, locking you from the game. Loot stats is usually look something like : +0.01% to the first and -2% to the second, and so on. What the f does this all mean. Why should I care? Just give me something cool, not 1st grade math. But there is none

The interface is overloaded. You can add a few points here and here, remove a couple there and there and there... I'm not interested, thank you.

Overall, God of War is just a little bit better than meh.

Set in the lands of the Norse Gods after Kratos pretty much wrecked the Greek world, Kratos has been living a quiet life with his wife and son. Naturally, by the time the game has started, his wife has died – apparently of natural causes – and she requests that Kratos and their son, Atreus, take her ashes to the top of the highest mountain in all the land to scatter them.

Needless to say, things get a bit complicated, the Norse gods get involved, and before you know it you are off on an adventure through… well, the majority of the nine realms of Norse mythology, though in truth most of your adventure is in one realm (Midgard, i.e. the world of mortals) with your excursions to the other worlds little more than brief dungeons or series of challenges at most.

The game is not enormously long, but it has a huge amount of side content which greatly stretches out its length. There’s a lot of places to explore and treasures to find, but the game is actually a bit short on actual monsters to fight.

The problem is, the game actually runs out of new things to show you surprisingly early in its length. While there’s ostensibly a number of types of enemies, in reality there’s only a few actually different types – basically a very fast one that jumps on you, a standard melee trash mob, an enemy with a shield, an enemy with a big hammer, an enemy that throws ranged attacks at you, a teleporting witch, a big hulking ogre, a werewolf, trolls with big clubs, some flying enemies who shoot blinding things at you and then engage in melee, some other flying enemies who shoot things at you and sometimes buff enemies, and trolls.

The game shows you all these types of enemies pretty early, though, and as a result, it feels like the game runs out of things to throw at you long before the game’s length ends. It doesn’t help that there’s really only five bosses apart from the trolls (which are very similar to each other) resulting in the game feeling like it is lacking for actually interesting combat content – which it kind of is. You fight some bosses multiple times (for story related reasons, but still) and unfortunately, it kind of becomes old hat by the end. The nine Valkyrie bosses do try to mix things up a bit themselves, and are the most interesting boss fights in the game, but they, too, get repetitive after a while.

For all the spectacle that the game has, the game’s combat is honestly pretty mediocre – and that’s very unfortunate, because there is a fair amount of it.

This is broken up by exploration, which is okay, but nothing super amazing – it’s pretty standard “puzzles”, but they’re all very simple and mostly are pretty much the same, just “the puzzle pieces are hidden differently”.

Really, the only thing the game has to make it stand out from the competition is presentation – but fortunately, it does have that in spades. The voice acting is really good, the characters are fun to interact with (even if Kratos himself is mum about things for much of the game), and if you are a fan of Norse mythology, you can see all sorts of fun references in here, along with the game’s various twists and attempts to make the gods the bad guys (because, this is, after all, God of War, the series infamous for deicide – and while gods do die, you will likely be disappointed by the number, though fans of Norse Mythology will also be able to predict who is going to die and more or less how).

The game’s core relationship – between Atreus and Kratos – works well, even if it is frustrating at times with just how taciturn Kratos is, but you can see how scarred Kratos is from his past experiences. The game, then, is about Kratos coming out of his shell a little while his son has to figure out who he is and what is going on. Atreus helps out in combat, and also helps with some puzzles, and while none of it is particularly spectacular in execution it works well enough.

All in all, I felt like the game stretched itself out too long relative to its interesting content – it added two grindy sidequests for no good reason, as the combat is not anywhere near good enough to justify them, and it just adds to the length of the game without adding to the main thing that the game delivers on – the story of the relationship between Kratos and Atreus and their role in the world, including Kratos’ own undesired role, as he clearly detests his own nature as a god and fears what his son will be like when he realizes that he, too, is a son – trying to keep things as low-key as possible while avoiding giving too much away.

All in all, the game's presentation saves its mediocre gameplay, and the side content is too often a boring distraction from the main thrust of the game.

Normal difficulty is a boring cakewalk where the combat encounters outside of boss fights are annoyances that just slow down the story. But if you want more interesting and aggressive enemies, turning up the difficulty does that... but also drastically inflates their health bars. Even on Hard, a single normal enemy can take upwards of ten hits to kill, and this is a game where you will often fight groups of five or more enemies at a time, in multiple waves. It's the absolute worst form of difficulty inflation, which is so puzzling because they *also* make the enemies smarter and more interesting to fight! Why is this how it is? If the devs really think anyone wants every enemy in the game to be a damage sponge, they should have made a difficulty menu where you can mix and match options, or at least add a couple more difficulty settings so there could be one that's "interesting fights that don't last for ten minutes each".

Don't even get me started on the hardest difficulty, which for some completely unjustifiable reason *locks you out of changing difficulty*. This is common in older games, but here it's blatantly done deliberately because you can freely switch between the others. I'm pretty sure this was done for no other reason than to stir up hype in the hardcore gaming scene, but if the intent is to reference properly hard games like Dark Souls, they really screwed the pooch, because the balancing here is absolutely atrocious. This mode has the most interesting combat mechanics, stuff you literally can't even see in the other modes, but once again if you want that intense experience you also have to deal with normal enemies who have health bars literally bigger than the first boss on normal.

If you don't care about gameplay, this is a good story. But I'm not sure it's worth slogging through the combat in any of the available configurations.

Unfortunately, that's where the positives end.
Movement is a chore. There is no organic interaction. You are just advancing through narrow tunnels, pressing a button to watch a short cutscene every time you want to do something. Even jumping works like this.

Exploration can be mildly entertaining despite the movement. The problem is that you are not equipped to explore the entirety of a location on your first visit. This would be fine but you often need to revisit a location 3 - 4 times just to pick up everything. This is obviously done to increase play time.

Combat is competent but dull. There's no need to use most of your moves. Using the same 2 - 3 attacks is far more efficient. The enemies won't care. There's not a lot of variety to them. Also, the fact that Kratos covers half of the screen during combat is frustrating.

The story exists and it is fine.

Overall it's a very middle of the road game. It's perfectly mediocre.

I had heard a great deal of things about the latest installment of "God of War." I heard it was a departure from the original series, a vast retooling of the original mechanics to explore a more story-driven third-person action experience.. and it vastly sucks compared to anything I've touched in the genre. By that I mean, compared to all other action games in the history of action gamesI had heard a great deal of things about the latest installment of "God of War." I heard it was a departure from the original series, a vast retooling of the original mechanics to explore a more story-driven third-person action experience.. and it vastly sucks compared to anything I've touched in the genre. By that I mean, compared to all other action games in the history of action games so far, God of War: Skyrim Edition is the single worst title I've ever played. This isn't because Norse of War is notoriously bad, but because its pompous. Its vain. Its overtly injecting drama into a script that didn't call for one. Its preachy, its shallow, its overall presentation has more in common with a DVD interactive menu than an actual videogame.

Graphics? Who cares when you can only see in a field 72 degrees around you and are expected to somehow be able to fight multiple enemies in every direction. Granted they are stupid enemies that can be cheesed by axe throwing them to death, and you can even do this to enemies that are outside of aggro range, which is either broken or poorly programmed, but I couldn't tell you which is more hilarious. Dialogue? Who cares how well its delivered when it stinks to high heaven, when every other word out of the blue dwarf is f**k while you're talking to him about upgrading your armor. Who cares about dialogue when the worst sequence in the game is anytime you are locked into a cutscene and are unable to skip it? Who cares about dialogue when scripted events like "walking across the room while carrying a wounded boar as terribly written lines are exchanged" is less fun than buying toilet paper at store?

The BOY is a terrible, terrible, awful, hideous, stupid, meandering, and woefully misused character. He is most of the reason why I stopped playing. With extremely amazing lines like, "CAN WE GO NOW," or "I BET THIS IS HOW TO SOLVE THE PUZZLE IN THIS ROOM" or "WOW DAD YOU ARE BEING ATTACKED RIGHT NOW THAT'S CRAZY." Wow, what endlessly amazing superfluous and garbage-tier dialogue, which is also on repeat throughout the entire game. Enjoy traipsing through majestic landscapes that only consist of a lake the size of a puddle, a few large rooms, a boss fight (which is always obvious) and then back-tracking through the same section so the level designers can pretend that changing the coat of paint on the walls, opening some doors, or pretending extra trinkets to find are actual reasons to make you play through the same area twice. Puzzles are so dumb my dog wrote them for the game- no really- he actually works for SONY and recently did the lead character design for Alloy in the new "Horizon - Zero Dawn" game. He was hired on as a consultant, because they wanted the main character to appeal more to dogs that might enjoy being able to relate to a dog-faced woman as a lead character.

Kratos is a stump of a character. I don't know what you could actually do with him in all seriousness. He is basically a self-insert mythological joke of a character, and nobody actually took him as a well meaning or sympathetic character. The old games were more about raunchy, bloody, raw fights with the occasional nudity that most 13 year olds (myself included) absolutely loved. I think they're great distractions, they don't really have a cohesive story, but who cares? They weren't really about that. This new Kratos is painted as some kind of stoic, silent and brooding old dude who can't decide if he hates his obnoxious little brat of a son or actually kind of enjoys his company. If anything at least the comedic side-kick angle has been worked to death now. All-in-all, the game is way to melodramatic, too cutscene heavy and lacks the grit, fun or nudity from the older games. The new axe gets boring after 2 hours, having to mash an extra button so your AI companion actually fires his bow was probably just developers being lazy and the camera is so bad that it caused me to stop playing after 5 hours. Difficulty doesn't feel right on any setting as "baby-mode" story is ridiculously easy, but "Give me slightly above normal" adds more health to every enemy, drawing fights out to a ridiculous degree. Three troll fights in and I honestly couldn't believe it was the exact same fight again- it was like something out of "Batman Arkham Asylum," ironically another game with a slow, boring protagonist who takes up way too much of the screen for me to see what is going on. Sorry about all the money and talent that was wasted on such a mediocre product.

Not a bad game but clearly has problems with the hitbox and in some fights the red twinkle hint for undefendable attacks just stops happening, and it misses the mark completely about how the previous games made you feel, im sure some people not easily impressionable that never played the older games might even be wondering what was the big deal about Kratos anyway, he inst half as cool as he used to be.

Visually the game is very appealing; however, the dialog was very boring. The game is very slow and Kratos doesn't live up to the hype as a chacter in my opinion. That being said there is a neat dynamic between father and son. I'd say my biggest gripe is the tedious upgrade menu being pretty hard to navigate and the gamsplay is repetitive and uninspiring . I couldn't engage myself in the combat. I know many may disagree but I give this game a 7 at best. I tried returning the game but couldn't because I played over 2 hours of it on steam. I can't seem to get myself to beat the game. This has pushed me away from trying ragnarok now.

Beautiful game, and I love the fact that they have "original" graphics settings to match the consoles graphics, that being said it very much has the issue that most Sony games have where the world missions and side content feels the same and thrown in just to make the game a little longer. It very much felt like a god of war game was with horizon zero dawns formula

Honestly for 2022 this game isn't that great. There is a lot of reused content and reused boss fights, side stories are also not that interesting. Main story, cinematic fights and kratos carries this game really hard tho while gameplay is just good.

    It looks very solid.
    Gameplay is not very good.
    Narration is insane
But I find it boring after playing 5-6 hours.
I think it is a good game but I cannot say very good.

It's more like a movie than a game, but the main thing that pisses me off is that a head hanging from my ass and a 7-year-old child is constantly giving me advice, and the game never gives you the opportunity to solve things??? dude i am god of war do you think i really need a 7 year old's advice?

God of War is more or less a game for everyone who is not afraid of action gameplay and appreciates good narrative and production quality. It's also great to watch, so it can be recommended to extended family members over the series. [Issue#317]

After more than 55 hours spent playing, I’m still awed by just how great God of War is. This is the result of a clear, determined vision, its separate elements harmonizing almost perfectly to deliver an experience that understands the series’ blood-soaked origins but is also not afraid to push it into a more mature and nuanced direction. Kratos and Atreus’ relationship develops naturally as does their understanding of the foreign land they’re journeying through. The story takes its time, never rushing its satisfying reveals, and making way for a set of surprisingly personal boss fights, while the continuous camera shot used throughout the game is a masterstroke in terms of presentation. All this is built around a snappy and responsive combat system that has more depth than you’re initially led to believe. There are more jaw-dropping surprises I didn’t touch upon simply because it’s best that you experience them for yourself. Looking back, aside from the port’s few performance flaws, my only real complaint has to do with Sony taking this long to bring the game to PC.

God of War merges all its gameplay elements into one excellent package, dressed in unparalleled direction and amazing storytelling. The scale of the narrative, the divine but always human Kratos, the "boy" who sees everything with childlike enthusiasm, all this offers the player a thrilling story that has at its heart the most human and natural relationship between a parent and his child. Regardless of preference, God of War is a must-see title. Benchmark for each and all its elements and still fresh in 2022.
