This is what I hate about so many Japanese visual novels, or other Japanese games for that matter. The protagonist is completely oblivious and is weirded out about everything "new" he comes across in Japan. If that was the only explainanation you got then it wouldn't be so bad but the game keeps explaining the same simple thing over and over again, recapping it again and again.
In other words, this visual novel treats the player like a small child.

For everyone else, Go! Go! Nippon doesn’t go far enough in any one direction to be recommended as anything more than a pleasant diversion for a few hours.

Ultimately what you have here is a visual guidebook (which is great but not really helpful at home on your PC) overlayed with an interactive romance novel, where the protagonist has minimal input to the final outcome, unless they know where you need to go to get the girl you want.
