in a game based on the gameplay, the imput must be excellent. spoiler, it sucks. almost any collision with the hammer means an incredibly long jump. i still really like the concept of the game and someone who annoys you whenever you loose, but it's thecnically very bad.

Getting Over It With Bennet Foddy is a game about climbing a mountain with deliberately extremely awkward controls. In the game, your avatar is a man in a big black cast-iron cooking pot with a sledgehammer. The only control you have is moving your mouse around to swing said sledgehammer. The head of the sledgehammer is used to push off of things, as well as to swing around things; it isn’t actually used to smash anything. You cannot walk or jump; all movement in the game is controlled on slinging yourself around with that sledgehammer.

Naturally, this means that your goal is to climb a gigantic mountain of random objects, specifically designed to be extremely difficult to climb with this control method. Worse, there are no checkpoints; while your progress will be saved if you quit, the reality is that this is as much a curse as it is a blessing, because at many points in the game, it is possible for you to, with a single mistake, hurl yourself off the side of the mountain of garbage all the way back to the beginning – and even where you don’t do this, it is still often possible to hurl yourself back a significant distance.

This is a game which uses difficulty for the purpose of comedy. The game is not only hard, it is deliberately and unrelentingly hard. Bennet Foddy – the man who made the game – said that it is a game designed for a specific kind of person. Namely, to hurt them. And this is really the case – this whole game is an exercise in masochism.

The game is deliberately ugly – it looks terrible, just full of pre-bought assets, something that the game itself comments on. Because, you see, the real attraction here is Bennet Foddy himself, talking about the design of the game, games in general, the game that inspired this game (an old B-game called Sexy Climbing, which is itself another deliberately difficult game), ect. He has a pretty good voice, and says various encouraging quotes (or possibly maddening, if you are the frustratable sort) whenever you fall down.

Naturally, you will be hearing a lot of these, as well as some old licensed music related to falling down or getting back up again (though, sadly, no Chumbawumba).

I don’t think this is a game a lot of people would enjoy. Honestly, this game feels like it plays on our impulse to try and overcome some obstacle, no matter how ridiculous, for the sake of doing it. If you are very prone to such, you might spend many, many hours trying to master this game.

If you aren’t, you are probably going to quickly lose interest, as that is really all there is here, and the game is, again, deliberately and unrelentingly difficult.

The worst of it is, there’s very little sense of payoff; while you get more quotes, the further you get in, the more sparse they become, and the harder the game gets, making them grow even sparser. All you end up getting are the “encouraging” quotes.

I ended up losing interest a few hours into the game; the sheer amount of repetition in climbing back up sections I’d already climbed began to bore me. I suspect that if you are an angrier person, this game might enrage you, but in the end, it is hard to get too invested in it.

As a joke game, this is kind of amusing, but it is the sort of thing I don’t think most people will really appreciate paying for; as part of a Humble Bundle, I messed around with it for a bit, and thus I got it on Steam as well, but I can’t help but feel like I would have spent my time better doing just about anything else. Hard games can be fun - I enjoyed Super Meat Boy and The End is Nigh, as well as games like Super Hexagon - but the deliberate obtuseness of this game makes it hard to really love or even like. I didn't hate it, but it just left me feeling like I should have done something more productive with my time, or at least more fun.

What puts me off is how insufferably pretentious the dude talking is. The following statement specifically.

    Going piece by piece;

"When games were new, they wanted a lot from you."
They never wanted a lot from us. The technology and methodology behind making them was unfathomably primitive compared to where we are now, just like today will be another 30 years from now. There is a reason that slippery controls, one-hit deaths and lives systems, among other things, have by-and-large gone the way of the dodo today. It doesn't make them more rewarding, just frustrating. They seem to be making a come back like culture sometimes does, thanks to the surge of Souls/Rogue-like genre, but I imagine soon enough we'll remember why they were left behind in the first place

    "Players played stoically..."
Because we didn't have another option, that's just how **** was back then.
"...Now everyone's turned off by that."
Because we moved past the concepts that required that sort of thought ages ago, and for good reason. We realized the getting knocked back a mile in Castlevania, or Mega Mans slide-y controls were bad and we moved on or fixed that.

"They want to burn through it quickly, a quick fix for the fickle"
Generalizations are so much fun! Play through enough of Dragon Age: Inquisition to really enjoy it and tell me how quickly that went by.

"Some tricks for the clicks of the feckless"
feck-less: lacking initiative or strength of character; irresponsible. That's just flat out insulting, really. I could call the creator an artsy try-hard whose games consist of purposefully horrible controls just to get some yucks at people raging, and I'd be tons more accurate than that last part (Lets not forget QWOP, which Bennett Foddy can also be blamed for)

Normally this is where I'd say I understood what he was going for here, but I honestly don't. Deliberately frustrating controls, mechanics and environments, combined with how horrendously pretentious the narrator, treating Getting Over It like it's some grand, defining statement on gaming when it's simply just another rage game and nothing more. Just like QWOP, just like Kaizo Mario, just like I Want To Be The Guy, and all the other less remembered rage games before it.

After a couple of hours and completing the game i found myself frustrated, thinking to myself for what reason did i just put myself through all that, that's when i realised - this isn't a video game, but a visual novel.

I say this because scaling the "mountain" in the novel is comparable to simply clicking through lines of text in others. Some may say that an avenue of skill is required to be able to use the hammer, and to that i don't disagree - if you are able to manoeuvre the hammer properly you will progress faster than others, however the game has almost retarded controls in the fact that doing the same action with the mouse twice in the same area will almost never produce the same results, coupled with the less than sensible physics makes a "game" in which most of your progress won't be of autonomous movement but simply doing the same circle motion until you get to the next obstacle. Much like a visual novel one is able to progress faster simply by clicking text faster, and similarly may be limited in progress by unskippable text.

The story of this novel annoys me - man in pot climbing mountain with sledgehammer aside the main (and only) character Bennett Foddy cuts from musing about making his "game", how the internet is evolving both how games and media is created and the nature of these evolving mediums, as well as reciting some fantastic poetry about the above. What annoys me is that Bennett's "intellectual" (for lack of a better word) speaking is the minority of all the speech in the game - Most of the monologue (dialogue if you like to swear at the game like i did) comes from Bennett lamenting over your (eventual) loss of progress, which is quite disappointing because i kept slaving through the novel hoping to hear more of his thoughts rather than to experience the "gameplay". In the end the story left me bored as it devolved into "am i willing to do more circle motions to hear more Bennett".

Overall this "game" is a mess, and that leads me to the final question; Would i spend money on this game? no.

The controls are strange to get used to, but once you do they are razor tight. Most of the reviews complaining about the game's controls must not have played long enough, which is a shame.

    Primary negative point:

The game makes no attempt to provide accessibility. It considers (and explicitly states so) broken controls (mouse acceleration on by default, mouse cursor always drifts to hammer head) that effectively make any input multiplied by a random number, to be a feature.

It does not however provide any way to adapt the amount of influence this has on gameplay to the kind of person playing it. Got slow reflexes? Motor control issues? Tough luck, you get to play at difficulty Extra Hard and there's nothing you can do about it.

So I'm writing this review because I see a lot of people praising the game as hard. And I think it's not really. It's not really that hard, and when it is, it is all for the bad reasons, just like half of the roguelites polluting the indie scene (and often the most popular ones at that...).

The game tries to mock the modern consumer society for needing fresh meat, even if it's garbage, 24 times a day if not more. In that respect the game is so right. From what I can understand, the game (developer) assumes it is better than most other games, that it is hard and rewarding. It sports a generic asset aesthetic, on purpose, to further the narrative of the game.

However, the game being hard is hardly true. It's just about repeating over and over until you get it ALL right. Just as if any time you didn't get an A+ in school you had to start over your assignment/test. So any small mistake is punished severely since there is no checkpoint and just a couple mistakes could get you back at the very beginning of the game. I haven't found this to be particularly rewarding.

Sadly the controls are also kind of terrible. People say they're skill-based because in this trash-loving generation of internet, some people just love to look elite and yell it on the roofs. Whenever I completed a truly hard game, I never felt the need to yell it on the internet. I'll talk about it to my friends maybe, but mostly I'll be filled with joy. If a game community act like prick and start saying "git gud" there's a big chance the game is hard for all the wrong reasons like this or Enter the Gungeon to mention only this one.

While the base idea to move around with this hammer is great, too often a movement you did with your mouse will register too late (because something was blocking when you made it), sometimes sending you flying the opposite way you should.

Yes the controls can be mastered. Does this mean it's skill-based ? Hardly so in my opinion. It's mostly muscle memory and map knowledge. While I admire muscle memory especially in speedrunners, it's something most people can acquire with enough training, and is not in my opinion a good game design recipe. If this was made specifically for speedrunners though, good job, as it has all the elements of a speedrunnable game.

Now, I said before the game thinks it's better. Well, I'll tell you frankly, I don't know for sure. The game's tone may actually be mocking both the garbage loving crown but also the elitist self-loving crowd.

I am sadly in agreement with this view of the world. On one side people will buy the same Call of Duty every year, not properly informing themselves on what other good games there could be, and god knows there are better games and even better FPS, even without a masochistic difficulty. On the other side there's a bunch of people praising games with random and completely dumbly unfair difficulties just to tell the world how good they are because they beat it. Even though most of the time it was probably just a good lucky run or learning by heart the game by playing 100 times or much more. Seems like humanity is hellbent on being extreme and can't find a middle ground in ANYTHING.

Edit : I changed my rating, because I think the double mockery of modern society, one in narration and the other in gameplay, is brilliant

The only thing that's keeping this game from being a 10 is the lack of replay-ability. It's a one and done game so you feel ripped off to an extent

The only thing that's keeping this game from being a 10 is the lack of replay-ability. It's a one and done game so you feel ripped off to an extent because you'll never play it again until you forget about it and just so happen to stumble across it.

I played 20 minutes. I never fell back, but the game gave me such a bad anxiety, that I had to stop.

This game is not hard. It's just poorly designed. It's literally the opposite of fun and good gameplay. The only good things about it are the jokes. There is literally no reason to play the game. If you want to climb a mountain, just play Celeste. It's much more fun

About 30 seconds of gameplay on YouTube was all I needed to know that this was a game for me. So much sweet suffering.

The climbing mechanics are satisfying, the frustration you’ll have to endure on your road to mastery is sweet, and Foddy’s commentary is intelligent, but mouse controls are physically tiring and need getting used to. [01/2018, p.65]
