As soon as you get past the first set of story quests, around ar30, you start to realize that just how much time and effort it will take to LEVEL, not build, but level just 1 character and their talents out. Then you factor in how long it'll take to farm a certain artifact set, to give you an idea here's how it is: you grind a domain and random artifacts drop, sets DO NOT have equal chance to drop (some sets are proven to drop more likely than the better versions). Now suppose an item from your set drops, the next rng is that is it even the item piece you need (flower, feather, goblet, etc.) and after that you need to see if it even rolled the proper stat (atk, atk%, elem %, etc.) that you need for your character. THIS ISN'T EVEN MIN MAXING, THIS IS SIMPLY TRYING TO GET A VIABLE SET PIECE! Min maxing is next to impossible because you'd be aiming for all of the above + a bunch of rng substats.
So from an average, non-min-maxing player's perspective this is: rng ^ rng ^ rng, but that's not accurate either because each of those rng aspects are not equivalently balanced both amongst their own respective category and each other.
AND THIS IS ALL LOCKED BEHIND A RESIN STAMINA WALL! Above that, this is just 1 character! You have an entire party to build, 2 parties if you participate in abyss!
Nearly everything is locked behind resin: Adventure rank (most experience is gained through resin requiring dungeons/bosses), mora (in game currency), character xp cards, talent mats, weapon ascension mats, character ascension mats, artifacts.
HELL they even have these 2 weekly bosses which you can only get rewards from once a week, but that too requires you to use 60 aka HALF of your max available resin!
The only thing not locked behind resin is open world chests, daily commissions, abyss (but abyss is also time gated before refresh).

I have spent around 300$ to get characters but i cannot level them up without spending more - resources are limited hard by "resin" which is pay2play greedy mechanic.
I have played few gacha games, but this is outrageous. If it was just a mobile game for 5 minutes a day i would understand, but they advertised it as some kind of JRPG, and it is clearly not.

avoid at all costs unless you want to invest thousands, this game is not f2p friend nor "dolphins" friendly, so if you planned to spend few hundred, don't bother.

"The honeymoon period has ended, magic has faded, you have been caged."

Anime styled ARPG, with similar aesthetic comparable to Legend of Zelda: The breath of the wild, with decent intriquin storyline and character development. The pacing is depends on player style first, core mechanics later. Progression on everything else, is hampered by monetization and RNG.

The game has potential, that is squandered under everything ever so anti-consumer practices as possible.

    What are the anti-consumer practices?
Gacha/Surprise mechanics - it has no place for PC nor Console, there's no ifs or buts, unless you honestly want another Star wars battlefront 2 - sure go for it.
Stamina system - The whole "it is to limit your playtime" doesn't work on PC/Console gamers. That's a big no-no and should be abolished right away. Do not bring cancerous mobile mechanics to other platforms.
Multi-platform - Why is it up in the first place if you're just catering one group only? And fail even to do that properly? It is meant for mobile games, but fails to run on most of the handheld devices due to heavy performance. A lack in foresight for sure, could be remedied.

The mindless drones that rain praises have either stopped early enough, or have paid the price to be heard, they're just looking for justification for their spending, in a "free-to-play".

This review might have been made out of pure spite, sure, but I honestly hoped for best. Not another scummy practice from gaming industries.

So what does that left us? To make warning before it takes another step to wrong direction.
Do not spend another dime until changes have been made.

So what should be changed as free-to-play games tend to have something to make their income?

First of all. Halt everything. Remove it from stores and build the core mechanics over. FFXIV did this since the base was a complete technical mess, this is a complete mess in another sense. Discord is literally on fire, outcries are made, but companies have no act fast function. Re-iterating the system is to have spine and will to change. Telling "but it's going to cost" is already coveted by the masses. Reset and start anew.

Gacha mechanics has to go away. I won't even bother disclosing the odds. Making static pricing on units/gear - and for free-to-play side, grinding as always. Paying should be a way to skip the grind. Some might complaing P2W for sure, but this is a mostly single-player experience.

Resin/stamina system - gripe of us all, it should be abolished at once for no-one. Gamers can't play since the system doesn't allow you to progress. It might be a fragment of a certain country imposing certain kind of mentality on it's citizens, but I digress. System that is based on limiting your progression as inhumanly as possible is just beyond me. It's the core component, that is rotten.

Multi-platform incomprehension - The same old "but it's mobile game/gacha" isn't what the multi-platform is about. It is to exceed our expectations as trying something new, not to underwhelm us with everything bad. One would expect to have great experience. Not to have of scummy mobile market monetization schemes coming to PC and Consoles at full force. One can only wait for jurisdical intervention for mobile marketing, since it is and always has been predatory. It doesn't have to go that way, but does everything need to be forced down companies throat before they listen?

Once you hit the wall you'll start thinking differently about the game. Even towards middle/end of current content drought and progress hampering starts to show its claws, more walls seem to close in as you notice not being able to do anything due arbitary walls on all activity, except flower picking. These walls are rock solid, unbending. Also informed that even with money you're stuck within the same walls that have been placed by the company.

MiHoYo, this isn't going to work.

    With sincere feelings - blueraid

You eventually run into more characters who are you carbon copy anime tropes. None of them are interesting in the slightest. Then you reach a point where the meat and potatoes come in. The money. There are 5 or more different currencies, all of which are a clever way to bypass gambling laws. You get some fairy dust that can be used to summon more characters and weapons. The more real life money you spend the stronger weapons and characters you may acquire. I took one look at it and exited the game. Not worth my time. I have played mobile gacha but if I am going to spend money on a mobile game I want it to at least be fun. This game isn't fun, it feels more like a chore.

The main goal is to pretty much run around killing things and collecting drops. BORING, it is my opinion that a game such as this could work if the story and gameplay is decent. That just isn't the case with this one. I had to call it quits after an hour.

If they had put this amount of effort into the actual gameplay, it could have been much better.

Garbage PC version release. You could not rebind keys at launch. They have since implemented it, but it's still extremely bad and limited. Cant change mouse sens and they use extremely low sens in y-axis compared to x-axis.
Gamepaly mechanics are very bad. Weekly bosses frustratingly bad design where you get reset and have to spend longer to kill it. Many issues like this.

The gacha is hell. Extremely expensive game right here. Thousands of dollars wont even get you 1 maxed out 5 star character. you need 8 strong characters and possibly weapons to do end game.

The whole story of the title just goes away when in game events come which tend to be completely irrelevant to the story and is just made so you could get more in game currency for gacha. The developers did say the game is free to play and it is not forcing you to pay although it is true, initially they did encourage people to spend money in game. The developers is also fully aware that the free content in the game is pretty much the bare minimum for you to progress through the game, which imo, makes it a semi-p2w game. After reaching AR 40+ you hit the end game already, content is getting released too long which again makes it have an identity crisis with its Triple A title. Everything has a soft limit, you cant progress in game far enough to be relatively "good". Gacha rates is low, there are alot of people defending the rates but were talking about a "Triple A" game here. Personally, the game feels more like a money grab at this point, the devs decided to be lazy and not add unique animations to each character such was walking animation but rather have a universal animation despite getting alot of money already. Game is good initially but at its core it feels more like a mobile gacha game that had an identity crisis than a true Triple A title. Overall not worth your time playing in the end game. Now I have to say the existence of the resin system itself is not the problem, but the fact that it so aggressively hinder your progress. This game require a lot of grinding, either for character exp, character limit break material, gold (or Mora in this game), character talent up material, weapon upgrade material, artifact which themselves has RNG drop AND substats decided by RNG. Tons of resource which you need for EACH character you want to invest to (and you want at least 8 properly geared characters for the endgame), all require resin just to farm at all. With the pitiful amount of resin available you get at best 1 hour of playtime each day, which is not too bad for a mobile game, but Genshin impact clearly strive to be something more. There is a beautiful open-world in this game but the resin system discourage me for immersing in it, and I don't feel like spending on getting new character because I can't properly levelling them up anyway.
I would probably stick around with this game hoping for eventual fix to the resin system, but definitely would recommend it to anyone, or spending anymore money on it.

You won't notice this in the early stages of the game (which is intended to lure you in), but the higher level you get to, the more exponential the issue becomes.

The game will time lock you from progressing and put the things you need JUST out of your reach, tempting you to 'just spend to refresh your energy and you might get what you want' all the time. The energy system in Genshin Impact is one of the worst one I've seen from all the mobile gacha games I've played. You will run out of resources and in order to keep up with the 'difficulty curve' of the game, you are forced to only focus on a select few units and weapons. You cannot raise and use all the different characters and weapons at once.

The Gacha itself is also fairly atrocious. While not 'the worst', it's down there with the rest. The rate to get a 5* is 0.6% and the rate to get a 4* is 10%. There's only a single safety net, where you 'guaranteed to get a single 5* within 90 rolls'. (This is 10 for 4*). Every other single rolls you make that aren't 4* and 5* are absolutely worthless. In the current state of the game, spending money on gacha might not be 'needed', but it definitely gives you an advantage and you'll definitely have a better time if you do spend money on the gacha.

If it weren't for the (passive-)aggressive monetization system, the game would have been amazing. The voice acting comes in English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese and they are really great. The graphics is pretty good. The combat is one of the better ones I've seen. Trying out different weapons and characters for party is fun. Some of the puzzles are interesting and some of the challenges are rewarding to complete. Finally the world is fun to explore for the first time.

However all of the game's strength and positive points will come to a screeching halt once you hit that 'energy/gacha wall' and you're forced to just wait it out or spend money to play more.
So this game is really nice for very casuals that plays at a very slow pace or whales that can spend money to keep on playing.

Rather than a typical online game, Genshin Impact resembles a traditional single-player jRPG with a real-time combat. For a free-to-play title it is very impressive, but turns out to be pretty derivative and quickly slumps into monotony. [13/2020, p.52]

Oh, the joy of exploring this beautiful world. Oh, the clever combat, the great voice acting, the compelling story. This is one of the best RPGs of the year. And it’s almost beyond comprehension that you can get it for free.

Overall, in spite of things that should bring Genshin Impact down, the game is so much fun to play that the negatives are ultimately minor gripes. [...] The gameplay is smooth and simplistic, and it works great on all platforms - though I’m still not sure why the PlayStation version can’t be linked to a Mihoyo account so I could play on my phone when I’m not at home (PS Vita version please??) but it’s a small gripe to an otherwise terrific game.
