This game has amazing loyal developers who are willing to add more content even after release to maintain its gleaming fine polished indie game art style. Considering this game went beyond recycling an older idea and enhancing it with an on board crew mechanic made it worth the money and time I had spent on it.

Its only real weak points are that the seemly random generated are pretty much similar in the sense that I know the best case scenario and the worst case scenario. The blue options are in my opinion an appropriate measure to give players a better chance by having the right ship modules and weapons at the right time, but not enough to completely eliminate the fact that some items are a must have in order to stand a chance in the 8th Sector. The mod teams and mod support are the go-to sort of people to fix the most of the problems, but why couldn't the Dev's give a little more variety then get to world 8 and kill the rebel fleet boss.
Everything else seemed almost flawless with the game design with the oxygen system I had only found in very few games and the crew boarding just makes the game feel exciting when on the offense and devastating on the defense. Then the game offers even more than the typical "blow up the the space ship" by providing legit opportunities and benefits to some surrendering ships who want to live. Most of the time I find myself blowing them up for scrap so I can upgrade but often intrigued by the offers they make.
This is an absolutely positively must own this on your phone if you have one, and is well worth the price it charges. I could even compare these mechanics to my favorite games I ever played list and that on itself made me having second thoughts on whether I should give this an 8 or a 9 despite it having a slight issue with crude random map generation that could be expanded on vastly. Then again the developers even spoiled us further with FREE new content instead of a ridiculously stupid DLC that I want to see gone forever. It would of been a ten if the game was perfect and I have yet to see that perfect game yet, so this is possibly the highest I ever scored a game anyways.

I kept thinking I was on the USS Enterprise - I would imaging yelling : divert all power from shields to the weapons, or the engines... target their oxygen systems... etc., etc. Very addictive. Although it is random, once you play enough you start to see some patterns, or know certain things to expect. Failing is just as interesting as succeeding. Expand

It's an extremely replayable indie space adventure game with roguelike elements. It can be difficult at times. The challeges you face and the decisions you make will ultimately decide whether you'll make it to the end or not. However, it's this very difficulty that makes completing the game very satisfying.

This is one of my go to games when I have nothin else to play, strategy can be very simple or fairly complicated. For the price and replay ability it is a definite must have!

FTL is not a game for the lover of retro games, it is a game designed for the video game lover. Many players will emit a quick and fragile opinion accusing the game of belonging to a very small audience: those retro lovers who despise the tricks and technical ornaments of the new generations. Those players are wrong. FTL offers playability. FTL offers a depth that translates into hours of play, full of alternative paths, thousands of possible situations, continuous decisions that translate into small stellar achievements. And this is where the key to its great playability lies on: in the decisions that we make. FTL makes us participate of everything: the paths to take, the long-term strategies that will take our ship to beat the empire, the weaponry and updates that we might consider useful and the very necessary micromanagement needed in battles. FTL makes us consider the details such as the design of our fleet adapted to our style of play, the analysis of those races that fit into the configuration of our crew, the navigation chart, and a thousand other reasons that are there for us to discover as the game progresses.

We have seen many space adventures, few of them so disciplined in their playability. FTL will make you play again and again until you realize you are late for work, forgot to eat, drink and shower.

God, I have spent so much time with this game. Critics point out that it is essentially a slot machine and that is true - luck plays a big role in FTL. I played the hell out of this game, delving into all the nooks and crannies and loving every second of it. I must admit I did bypass the rogue aspect of the game as that made it more fun for me. If I played it normally than my rating might only be 7.5. Hours pass but unlike many other games it was enjoyed and not wasted.

I had to submit a new review because my first impression of the game was very wrong and I shouldn't have written a review so quickly. This game is actually very deep to the point of every item in the game having a strategic purpose. I originally thought it was very random and while it is very random there are routine strategies you can follow that can help turn the randomness in your favor.

The game is basically Nethack in space, although while I find nethack frustrating to the point of wanting to throw my computer out the window, FTL, while still being hard as nails doesn't frustrate in the same way. Yes it's going to take you a while to have a game where you make it to the final sector. Yes it's going to take you even longer to beat the game, but each and every journey you find yourself telling the stories of your crew, living through their little pixelated lives and it really tears at your heart to lose your captain to a pack of killer spiders, or that engi slave you freed to a pirate boarding party. Deep under all the repetitive scenarios and mechanics there is this tiny little random heart beating life into the game in a way that even big-name titles seem to fall short of, and if you're a perfectionist, or a completionist there are some difficult unlockables to catch but even though I've basically seen all the game has to offer I keep going back, because it's easy to get into and hard as hell to master. My expectations were low - but when I got into it I was surprised to find myself really engaged and enjoying the experience. The visuals aren't that flash but the gameplay fires the imagination such that the visuals remain functional and incidental to the core experience. Different scenarios are presented to you as you warp into each new sector and you are required to make choices that influence where the game goes; a lot of these choices result in combat but it's refreshing to see that some do not. A lot of sci-fi games focus too much on combat but the whole star trek experience is just as much about managing crew and making decisions as it is firing the phasers. FTL is perhaps leaning toward too much combat, but it does make significant efforts to give you other things to do as well - and to good effect. The soundtrack is delightful and the sense that you are in command is palpable. On my last game it was me and Jean Luc (you can name crew members) and we made it alone to stage 4 (of 5) and had some amazing scraps and adventures along the way. We started we 3 crew members (you can recruit more along the way) but Beverly died after we were boarded and the oxygen levels in sick bay dropped to the point where she suffocated. We were really cut up about that but pressed on. It's a great little game - could perhaps have benefited from just a little more depth but as is it's heaps of fun and for the price... you can't lose. Highly recommended. Expand

The problems are there's just a lack of content for random encounters. After a few replays you start to see patterns in encounters and know what path to pick even before you read the whole thing. Some encounters just seem predetermined for you to fail or lack any substantial rewards to risk your crew and ship over. It just gets a tad old.

Another problem is un-lockable ships aren't the easiest to unlock and it'd be nice for the developers to include maybe an extra ship or two at the beginning to allow new people for more flexible game play initially. If you've got $10 and enjoy tactical game play with some luck involved, you won't be disappointed.

It's rouge-like nature can be a flaw sometimes. Sometimes even if you are a very good player you lose no matter what, for example you spec your ship into drones, and you find only 1 combat drone through entire campaign failing miserably. Sometimes it also can be too easy, it really depends more on luck than skill.
The graphics are kinda cartoonish but this is okay in an indie game, though better graphics would make this game way more amazing.
The music is epic, I listened to it outside of the game more than I played it I think, really immersive, you can find in on youtube and see if it suits your style.
During the game you unlock new ships and new ships layouts which gives it a lot of replay ability. Single campaign will take you only a couple hours to complete, but it's not a problem thanks to it's rouge-like nature.
What else...technically it's almost perfect as I did not encounter any major glitches or crashes.
Also it's modable. There are a lot of good mods out there, mostly adding new ships but also total overhauls worth checking out.

For it's very low price I can't give it any less than 8/10. It's one of the best indie games out there.

The game is luck driven but once you have a feeling for the game and its mechanics than you can make do with what you have.
The mechanics are the real highlight of this game. Much of the game will be spent in combat with other spaceships of different alien races and they are all outfitted differently. There are a wide variety of weapons you can buy or find and each have their own tradeoffs. You can blow up the other ship or you can board it and wreck havoc or you can kill the crew with anti-personnel weapons; and you have to remember they will be trying to do all these things to you. Another large part of this game is upgrading your ships systems and subsystems. You can opt for heavy shields, powerful engines for manoeuvring, or a bit of both. This greatly affects how you play the game since scrap(the money of the game) is in limited supply and scrap used on upgrading your medical bay can't be used for the **** In this way ships become very specifically skilled or jacks of all trades. For the above mentioned reasons, this is why the game is tough and gets your adrenaline pumping. You'' often notice a critical shortcoming far to late or have incredibly bad luck. You can easily dispatch another ship only for your own to be engulfed in flame leaving you with one crew member and a wrecked ship that needs to be repaired.
With all that being said, it does have its shortcomings. In between fighting the game has random events that occur when you jump to a location and these cycle too frequently;although with different ship layout and crew members you may have different options. The sprites for the crew are quite small and it's easy to open a door instead of selecting them and they end up killed by their enemy's hand or some other danger. Opening doors and hatches is also similarly difficult in the heat of battle. There is however a pause function that should be used often to avoid just these sorts of difficulties. You can also be infuriatingly unlucky no matter how much skill you have. Overall, this a very fun game with excellent mechanics. Anyone who as ever wanted to command their own starship is in goods hands with this game.

You can't do this with 2-3 failed runs. You need to do MORE failed runs and keep learning. Then, when you understand what you need, you go for the win. And obviously it isn't so hard after all, once you have unlocks, once you understand. A single play-though takes about four hours. But of course you can quit before then or restart if you mess up. The game is fine. It is what it says it would be.

THE GROT REVIEW CRITERIA: After a long time writing reviews like an anus, think its time to set a few bad habits straight: Stop insulting designers. Show some respect for the design process and getting games in circulation. Hence (1) No Red scores. (2) Game scores as follows: Bad Game 5/10. Poor Game 6/10. Mediocre Game: 7/10. Good Game 8/10. I really liked this game. The only reason I've sworn off this game is that you have little control over what weapons you can buy at the store. There are only certain items available at the store each time and so you have to keep checking and hope that they have what you want. This sounds nice but in practice this means you can play the whole game and not see that one sweet item you need to defeat the boss and then you'll lose at the end. I didn't like that element, I wish I'd had more control over whether I win or not (such as did I make a mistake here or there, or perhaps I will try some new strategy next time) rather than depend on lady luck to be there for me when I go to the stores.

The game is quite good, inventive, and has a nice feel to it. I like the replayability and the extent to which your choice matters. On the other hand, some gameplay does get a bit repetitive, and sometimes I have died to the hand of an enemy way more advanced then I. Generally though, good game, worth the $10 if your into strategy based simulation.

Well, the battles are frequent and often difficult, and thus other tasks are not as demanding of you (for game balance, I guess), and you should try to avoid the asteroid fields if your ship is failing. But I do like the role play elements of FTL, and the traveling you do through space is great fun. Not the greatest, but worth a try.

Also, the soundtrack is pretty awesome, I might add.

This one's just a little more hardcore.

The randomly generated encounters gives the game a good bit of replayability, and the side-quests and achievements that allow you to unlock different ships or layouts adds an OCD component to the game for completionists to keep going even after they've successfully beaten it (which is quite a feat in its own right).

I do feel that the idea of the game being a "different experience each time you play" was somewhat exaggerated (hence the less-than-perfect score). At its heart, he mission being run is the same with each play and there is a finite list of encounters that you will experience in when jumping into a system. There are only so many times that you can land on a planet with semi-sentient horses before you realize that it's probably scripted on some level.

You navigate your space vessel from one sector to the next where each sector contains a bunch of randomly generated waypoints. The path through the sector is the player's decision. It is most likely that you will encounter a hostile ship though.

As many other indie titles FTL has a retro pixel-graphics design, which in my opinion perfectly fits into the overall game design. Very worth mentioning is the impressive soundtrack of the game!

The gameplay mechanics are very focused on management. You have to decide whether you want to use your ship's energy for a stronger shield or maybe invest it in your medical bay where you can heal your crew members. Will you power your drones which can be very helpful in combat or will you just avoid confrontation?

At the end of the day FTL is a very consistent title where gameplay sound design and graphics all fit perfectly. What I liked about this game personally was the amount of luck which is involved here. You very much depend on the encounters that occur and the amount of scrap (game currency) you earn. You could lose the game by simply running out of fuel. This said I found FTL a very difficult game especially in the beginning but this isn't a problem at all as the random world generation and the new ship types one can unlock Faster than light has a very high replay value.

To clarify, FLT being a perma-death game completely changes the way people play the game and how the game is made in general (Not necessarily for the worst). It makes people think twice before making a decision, which is mostly what FLT is based upon, making decisions. This is a great approach on a perma-death game rather than it just be 60% luck..... well, it would be if that weren't true for this game.
All of the decisions you make are based on luck, where you end up teleporting is based on luck, how strong the enemy is luck, but these aren't bad things. These are necessary for a game that has random-generating levels, though, they come with the consequence of needed luck. This would be fine for FLT, but FLT is, as said before, based upon making decisions, which are based upon luck. So, while you have quite some control over how your fate ends, the decisions you make are more like rolling the dice, and choosing which dice to roll, the 6-sided dice, or the 8-sided dice.
Now on to the part of the game that bothered me the most, the ending, ending boss in particular. Final bosses in games are typically grand, massive, exciting, and the climax of the game. FLT covers all of these factors, however, they overdid one aspect of a final boss that isn't always thought of. The difficulty. The FLT final boss is VERY difficult to defeat, and by VERY difficult, I mean, it makes Ghosts N' Goblins bosses seem like a joke. The difference between FTL and most other games, as said before, is that it's perma-death, and if you can't save at a checkpoint of any sort, you're going to fight that final boss and lose and not be able to fight him again for a while... because the rest of the game is pretty hard too. You can't learn from your mistakes or learns a strategy for the final boss. While you could argue that it's a perma-death game and isn't meant to be memorized, you can't say that beating the final boss the first time around is possible either. The thing is that the boss comes as a surprise. While the hardest ships you may be fighting with may have 3 shields and 2 weapons, the final boss has 5 shields, 4 weapons (including a freaking tri-rocket-launcher thingy that wrecks havoc) with massive health and a cloaking device...... see where the difficulty spike is here?
Now despite the problems mentioned here, FLT is still a really good game. It puts your strategy to the test is a unique space commanding adventure. It challenges you with thought-provoking problems and and many different situations to deal with. While some situations may be dealt with luck, you will know that you are making your own decisions for the majority of the game..... at least until you reach the final boss.

When I first booted this game up, I didn't get what all the fuss was about. It's low tech, with very simple graphics. But after I played a while, upgraded my ship, found new crew members, and journeyed deeper into the galaxy, I got it.

Different weapons work against different shield types. You can upgrade your ship with drones which can ward off missiles or attack an enemy ship.

When you sit down to this game, it is difficult to know what to expect. I had heard great things about it for so long, but had been hesitant to try it for various reason. It looks simple. From the top down, there isn't much to the game. Take a crew, fly around, don't get killed. Simple, right?

The game is addicting for those who like it, but those who push through it past the first several hours are gluts for punishment. The game is difficult, nearly brutally so, and it comes almost completely from the random encounters/missions. The game could be readily described as "The Sci-Fi Experience" but in the same breath, it is unrelenting. Minute to learn, lifetime to master game. (Not that long but you get the point)

The game, while random, does get repetitious after the initial "THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER" shock. The game is an indie, yes, and for some reason that is a bad thing in today's mindset.

Many people will get at least 10 hours out of this game. Those who actually enjoy it will get much more. The advanced edition definitely helped with expanding the universe.

Those who take the time to enjoy the game for what it is, will find an experience worth enjoying. Those looking for a challenge, look no further. Those expecting 3D animation, engaging storyline and rich characters, look elsewhere.

The difficulty levels are tuned perfectly, the beginner can start with easy and beat the game in a tenth of attempts, then switch to normal and,... well, the game really becomes challenging.
Despite the fact that the technical realisation is all but awesome (seriously, a game stick to 1280x720 is not something of this millennium), it is impossible not to give this game a chance.

Of course, if you are searching for a "shoot-everything-that-moves" game, look elsewhere.

For an indy game like this, for this unique space idea and very cheap price. 10/10 deserved.

Edit:: I would like to lower the score because replayability is not as high as I thought. Once you get a hang of it, winning is not difficult and should not take more than 3 hrs to win a round. Though you have many ships to play, enemies are same. It lost my interest fast.

    It's ok, I guess. 8/10

The randomness is nice, but it sometimes feels too random. There will be tons of games where it just doesn't work out. Enemies will all have ion weapons, there won't be any additional crew members, etc. It basically means there's no way to plan anything because so much of the game is random. The short duration of games also means one can't get invested in the game. It's a lot like playing solitaire.

Now that I've typed that out, this seems like a perfect game for killing time in an airport. If you're waiting for a flight or something, FTL would be a great way to pass the time on a laptop with low specs and no mouse. If there is a phone version of the game, that would be worth looking into.

FTL is a game in which you control a small spaceship delivering highly important goods across the galaxy. The Kestrel is the name of your ship- however it is re-nameable- and it has three workers by default, an engine worker, a pilot and a weapons specialist, again all of whom are re-nameable- as you progress through the game, they become more skilled at whatever it is that you have them working away at and learn to repair their specialist object/area faster if, inevitably, damaged.

As you slowly traverse through each sector of the galaxy, you are constantly bombarded by hostile alien ships, lost travellers and many other beings/unmanned ships. You also occasionally come across distress call or shop. The distress calls often give you the choice to help a ship out or not, and the shop allows you to buy new crew members, weapons, ammunition, repair your ships hull or even sell unwanted items.

Overall, it is a massively addictive game, and after having studied it for just a short while, I can see why it has a lower Metascore than I previously expected. You see, FTL is not a game that you can easily pick up and instantly beat on normal difficulty after just a few attempts, I am yet to get further than the third sector on easy mode and even then I think I just got lucky. Some people strongly dislike games like this, others love them. If you're a fan of challenging games, Science-Fiction or are not sure about it, then I'd recommend that you pick it up. (£7 on steam, can be picked up on sale for roughly £1.50-£2.50). However, I'm only going to give FTL an 8(I would give it an 8.4 but I don't have that option) because even though it is a fantastic game, there is room for improvement. I would love it if it had Steam Workshop support so that the community can share their ships, and I would also like it if there was an easier and more difficult difficulty setting. The easy mode can be tedious for new players to get used to and I can only imagine that the hard mode gets boring for more experienced players.

    Thanks for reading.

But you can still do it, just for the sake of it.

What at first glance may seem to be quite a simple game soon reveals a fair amount of depth with all aspects of the ship from the crew, to the weapons to the shields needing to be managed and, when possible, upgraded. To be honest the random nature of events, combined with the perma-death, can be a little frustrating when you see hours of hard work quite literally going up in smoke but FTLs addictive gameplay will ensure most keep coming back for just one more try.

but, my boarding strategy which works great throughout the game then totally flops on the boss (the only boss)
where if you kill the crew the boss instantly gets 10x harder thanks to its "A.I." repairing everything

if the ship is that good on its own, why have a crew? why does a strategy that works everywhere not work here? seemed pretty lazy to me
regardless I managed to beat the boss 2-3 play throughs later by leaving 1 crew member alive
    because that makes sense

like I said I liked the game just wish there was more to it, but with the free expansion coming out soon
I'll probably be playing it religiously once again

FTL is a unique blend. It's action. It's strategy. It's roguelike. It's casual. However, none of those over-arching titles actually capture FTL's vibe. Perhaps "Jean-Luc Picard Flees the Borg Simulator" best gets the point across.

The strength of this seemingly simple game is its surprising level of depth. As a playthrough progresses, you have full control over the customization of the ship's various systems and upgrades. You're not likely to max out every category (or even a couple, for that matter), so you'll have to customize the ship around your play-style and your play-style around the RNGesus loot generator in order to see success.

Diplomacy is non-existent. Talking one's way out of a dispute rarely an option, so arm the photon torpedoes and report to battle stations! FTL does cater to different play-styles: one could focus on offensive abilities or defensive abilities. Thankfully, the game is deep in terms of customization, resulting in branching upgrade paths for both offence and defense. For example, one may choose to focus on dodge instead of shielding, or boarding parties instead of heavy weaponry. The choice is yours... sort-of. Allow me to elaborate.

First, acknowledge that it is unwise to start a new game of FTL with a certain strategy in mind, and then command your ship with upgrade tunnel vision. The game is based around entirely random encounters; adaptation is a virtue. To all those who like to plan ahead, this game flips you the bird! Sure you can have an overall goal in mind, but the game is random: you get what you get. Work with what you can scrounge up and/or to die trying!

Commanding the crew RTS-style works great! Crew members gain proficiencies in various ship-stations and tasks over time. Different alien species bring different bonuses as crew, which adds a layer of depth to starship customization. Crew mortality serves to heighten the level of tension in battles, and even post-battle in some cases. You could win a battle, but if your life support systems were knocked out, you could lose crew members if you can't repair the O2 generator in time. It can feel like a heartbreaking loss when you lose say a Tier 2 Weapons Specialist.

A few quirks and negative points are to be found in FTL. Crew members seem like "crew statues": they aren't affected by ferocious blasts or vacuum-sucking hull breaches. No... no one can get sucked into space in this game, not even enemy boarding parties. Disappointing, I know, for all you Among Us fans out there! Also, enemy ships with higher levels of shielding can be VERY difficult to defeat without shield piercing weapons or boarding parties. Losing is FUN, or so I'm told...

Ultimately, despite the procedural generation of every new start, replay-ability in FTL is fairly limited. It is a casual game, and it is best to play it in casual doses. Great if you have a little time to kill: 20 minutes here, half hour there. However, I found my interest in FTL easily burns out during hour long or longer sessions.

The game's unscripted charm is the main draw. You tell your own stories, the game just makes sure the endings are abrupt and filled with explosions. Experience your own journeys, filled with adversity, strife, sorrow, and success... mainly adversity, strife and sorrow. It is these player-driven stories that will keep you coming back for more Jean-Luc Picard-ing around.

    Make it so, Number 1!

The events that you run into are random at each planet, the problem is so is the result. Theres no thinking things through because theres no way to predict what will happen. You can have the finest tactical mind on Earth who knows to fire a beam weapon across six different rooms in the split second after the last shield goes down, but lady luck provides the opportunity to get a beam, then you're stuck flicking ion pulses at 4-shielded ships. I've always had a problem with any game mechanic the player is powerless to influence. So you can't pretend to play as Captain Pickard who has to find ways to get around situations by diplomacy or other smart alternative ways.
Even just the addition of a "luck" stat that can be influenced with upgrades or pickups would at least give a slight edge on which an informed decision can be made. So would hints as to what someone is planning when you speak to them. The addition of more diplomacy options or even a graphic representation of the person your talking to would do wonders for the "thinkers" out there.

I had a similar problem with XCOM along these lines, but in that case I was being asked to make a much bigger investment. Playing through the campaign and gradually building up your capability is a far longer operation and while randomly UFOs appearing or not appearing does dictate what you do, but not your progress! You are always building, upgrading or researching new equipment... while a game of FTL might last about an hour due to a lack of depth, balance issues and progress thats way to fast or way to slow. Randomness I can tolerate better in the shorter Roguelike style of game, but in longer games it can't be the 100% determining factor.

Personally, I do not enjoy the randomness so much. I think the game evolves too slow. I mean, you have this really **** ship to start with and absolutely no options. Some may argue in favour of this, but besides Binding of Isaac, I never seen a game do this properly. It's 5 frustrating gameplays in a roll, then on your next play you find a cool iten at the start, but hey, on the next jump, there is an unbeatable enemy and, well, you had the ilusion of fun for 45 minutes before being heavily frustrated again. Why don't you have a option of surrendering resources/weapons in order to flee ? There are different encounters, there should be different options. I deeply dislike game in which the developers want you to play in a specific way and you HAVE to like it.

PROS: The game makes a huge effort of diversifying the encounters, has a great atmosphere that pressure you to go foward and the gameplay is enjoyable and it makes sense.

Overall, I think labeling things as rogue-like is a good modern excuse for lazy developing. You can control probabilities of events and rewards as you progress and STILL have the caothic atmosphere of what rogue-like games require.

At first I really hated this game. It seems really straightforward (as far as tactics/strategy), and yet random and unfair. The tutorial is extremely basic and doesn't really prepare you for how to play.

The biggest omission is that while the game happens in real-time, you can pause everything and coordinate multiple actions, and then un-pause to set them in motion. In fact, it's

The biggest omission is that while the game happens in real-time, you can pause everything and coordinate multiple actions, and then un-pause to set them in motion. In fact, it's absolutely critical that you do. It's sort of a combination of real-time and turn-based.

You can play the game real-time but eventually it will throw a situation with four or five things going on and you'll get rolled. You're meant to pause everything, figure out the best counter-moves and then set everything in motion. Once you "get it", the game isn't nearly so frustrating.

Fulfill a sci-fi fantasy by becoming the Captain of your own starship! Don't expect great graphics, but do except to lose many hours to FTL and expect to lose your ship ... a lot.

Kickstarter has accomplished its mission in this one, giving the opportunity to an original, non-mainstream title to go public and meet its well-deserved success. Especially for sci-fi fans, it’s a no-brainer; buy this game at once and live the life of a courageous pilot that only has one mission: survival. [November 2012]
