Deftly avoids the many pitfalls of AI squad tactics, and this, combined with great control, mission design, and presentation, makes for a truly fantastic game.
-
While the gameplay is pretty tight, its the addition of charisma and squad mates that sets the game apart.
-
Ultimately the game is a little on the shallow side when it comes to mission goals and weapons, but it is fun enough to overlook these shortcomings.
-
The one area where this updated "Hitman 2" code shows great improvements is in the rag doll physics model.
-
It's really only its brevity and restrictive save game system that keeps this game from fighting its way to the top of the genre.
-
Gets better the more you play it. The challenge increases at the same rate as your skills and abilities so that you're really appreciating the level of control you've got towards the end and the cool action you can create because of it.
-
The serious lack of replay value in Freedom Fighters is detrimental, but this is still one of the most exciting action games of recent memory. The level design is impeccable, the storyline is enjoyable, and the strategy elements make this game stand out from the rest of the pack.
-
A quick paced, addictive action title with little replay value.
-
games(TM)It's far less intricate than a regular squad-based game, yet it retains all the elements that make them fun - as opposed to a title like Brute Force, which had none of them. A fine display of IO's creative talent. [Oct 2003, p.116]
-
TotalGames.netEven when you take into account some other minor disappointments on top of the AI though (such as the mess of a multiplayer mode and some annoying graphical glitches that occur on occasion), theres still no denying that Freedom Fighters is a fairly impressive effort and a fun game to boot.
-
The AI is surprisingly excellent - if you send a batch of troops out to scout, they will take up careful positions, scale machine gun positions, engage the enemy, and redeploy defensively without any more commands having to be issued.
-
Great teamplay tactics, but the PC version drew the short straw.
-
PC GamerWhat this shooter lacks in depth, it makes up for in fun factor. [Holiday 2003, p.114]
-
It's not too hard, it has a certain charm, it lets you take things on in your own way (as a commander or a commando), and it isn't afraid of pushing the old-fashioned arcade challenge of getting through a level without hitting F6 every ten seconds.
-
The ambiance and atmosphere are usually enough all by themselves to suck you in; but never quite enough to make you ignore the hundred little things that matter.
-
Computer Games MagazineIt matches intense, fast-paced action with a squirrely camera and imprecise aiming. Needless to say, that isn't a particularly compelling combination. [Feb 2004, p.77]
