Before this game was even released it had a pretty storied past. It's always difficult to live up to years of hype, even if there wasn't a ton of it. Knowing that you waited to release the game solely because you wanted the experience to be great sets the bar pretty high, especially for first impressions.

Before this game was even released it had a pretty storied past. It's always difficult to live up to years of hype, even if there wasn't a ton of it. Knowing that you waited to release the game solely because you wanted the experience to be great sets the bar pretty high, especially for first impressions.

If I were writing this review based on my true first impressions, the moments I first began playing the game, I'd likely give it an 8, maybe even a 9. It's an interesting take on the survival/crafting genre that's executed well enough. A few things might need some simplification, but the gameplay was solid enough and my experience was, at first, very enjoyable.

That was until I realized how much of the 'fun' gameplay was gated behind mechanics that are more suited for dull, shallow mobile games, all revolving around the 'loot' system. The in-game drops are heavily-weighted (not in your favor, of course), time-restricted and overall just distasteful. It's the gimmick of flashing the shiny toy in front of you and doing as much as they can to make you want it, without actually giving it to you. If you really do want it, however, you can up your chances by paying out of pocket for the same random loot drops with different weighting.

This kind of gameplay isn't necessarily damning in itself. Many games have done similar and still maintained a fun, free to play experience. The problem is that the rewards you get from the loot heavily affect your ability to play the game in the fun, exciting ways that you'd like to. The experience is already a little grindy, which has its pros and cons, but adding a layer of pay-to-win gambling on top of it is a bit of a slap in the face to players who want to enjoy this to its fullest.

I can't rightfully give the game a 0. It's not the worst thing I've ever played. But it joins a growing pool of games that could have been great, but fell to the temptation of microtransactions and greed. No matter how many times I see it, it's still sad to watch.

I'd also remind you to be wary of reviews that are overly-friendly toward the game, especially when others have taken to criticizing it. They seem to be pretty professionally-crafted messages of praise, likely from the developers themselves or people paid to endorse the product.

If they implement drop rates with the husks, then this game can get a good one. But like this is is Really up to you,, to spend Hundes of Dollars to get forward. It is really a pure pay2win (-progress) title.

I can't recommend this game and the behavior of the developers is forcing me to write my first review. I used the feedback button many times, I adressed directly on twitter, I wrote on Facebook and I wrote an email to the supporters. But they just don't care. All they want to hear are positive news about their game. There is no will in improving or making better.

I bought the Founders Edition deluxe, with a copy for my daughter. So I spent 90 € on this game. And first, especially if you see videos everything is so exciting and new. The gameplay is smooth, the characters are fine, the loot is overwhelming (at first).

But if you are into the game for a few hours, you recognize it is a big cash maschine. The only way to loot and lvl your gear up is through llamas. And the normal llamas, as well as the rare llamas are containing a lot of trash.

I opened, thanks to the Founders deluxe editions hundres of llamas. So far not one single legendary character or weapon. Just normal stuff.

The biggest problem of this game is, that there is no sense in doing all that. The zombies don't drop loot. The treasures in the world are only for the next games, no chance to find any schematics. You do the same over and over again for nothing. This game is, with this state of play, a total waste of time and money.

They just want, you put more and more money into that game for a really boring early access. I played hundreds of games in my life. But this game so far is the first game I regret spending money on.

The behavior and the goals of the developers are really something you should be aware of!

This game is great but the entire unlock process is pay to win. You LITERALLY cannot progress in this game without spending real life money. The game does a great job at hiding this during the first two world stages but once you get past these you are stuck in the mud.

If I could get a refund on this game I would, it has so much potential but is destroyed by greedy companies.

However, at its current state, I would not recommend it to ANY of my friends.

    Bad loot system:

It's a game about finding loot, except the most desirable loot are behind a gambling system (think loot boxes). A player will only be able to get about 50vbucks (on average), this equates to half a loot box a day. While players who choose to spend money, can buy any amount of loot boxes as they so desire at $1 a pop. I could be higher "power level" than a player who has played for months, within 1-5 days if I spend enough cash. However, if you don't care how strong other players are, there are also OTHER bad implications of this system.

The game has 4 general classes with about 6-8 subclasses beneath that. On top of that, each subclass can be different in rarity (commons and rares have about half the abilities of legendaries). So if you were to want to play the ninja class, you may not be able to. It would depend on what loot you got because heroes are loot too! And some may argue that you can easily find a common hero of any class. But let me tell you, the weakness of a common hero versus legendary/mythic will be significant very quickly.

    Poor Co-op

In a team game, where you defend a fort TOGETHER, it would make sense that you are rewarded for team work. Not here. This game rewards selfish play. There will be many games where your teammates won't help you complete the mission. Either off doing their own side missions, afking, or just looking for chests. So it is not uncommon for one player to have to spend their resources completing the mission while the scumbags who don't help, get exp for the mission (same as the person who spent all their resources), gets whatever look they found while you were doing the mission, and gets to save/build up their resources because they were leeching off of you. Also, people who decide to be "griefers" can actually destroy the core of your base and make everyone lose the game on their whim. That's INSANE! There are numerous other ways to ruin a game too, but there are too many to list and VERY easy to do.

    Insane number of bugs

By insane, I mean insane. This game is in early access (although it really wasn't marketed that way), but there have been so many bugs, that many players haven't been able to play for weeks. There was a bug on release week that many players couldn't play. Once they fixed that, there was performance bugs the following weeks where players still couldn't play. After their big bug fix patch earlier this week, many players lost their bases that they spent hours working on AND there were new bugs not allowing players to play! If you need a source, you can look at the game's subreddit. Every day, there is a new bug complaint about how PS4, xBox, or PC players can't play the game (although mostly console players).

There are a sh*t ton more complaints. The only evidence you need is to look at the Fortnite Subreddit or forums. The majority of posts are about people being EXTREMELY upset and many players quitting the game. A recent poll on the subreddit showed that 48% of those who answered do not play anymore or only log in for daily rewards. This is only weeks after the initial release!

However, you do not need to take my word for it, most video reviews and gaming reviews will tell you very similar to what I have. My best advice:

Wait 6 months to see if the developers are actually listening to their players. The game will be free then and if improves are implemented, then the game would be worth checking out by then. But for now, buying the game for any amount of money is basically the same as paying some random guy to slap you.

For one.. the only way to get schematics to make stuff is through llama's their micro transaction bs. Sometimes if you are lucky timed missions may have a schematic, but then its a "eh did i want it?" kind of deal.

There are no piles of loot. If you do happen to get a gun or trap in any chests. its already made and it has at best one wave of enemies worth of durability on it. Not only that but the zones all look the same. Go look up some streamers and ill bet you'll never be able to tell which zone they are in.

Heroes are locked behind llamas for the most part. Again some very rare missions come up with them. But chances are they aren't the hero you want.

Trust me, steer clear of this game. They are just wanting to milk your money through llamas before people get sick of this game

Update: They have also refused to refund. Avoid this game.

It's really a gambling & grinding game. The vast majority of your time is spent gathering supplies and crafting items that go away after a round.

When you watch the trailer, you're tricked into believing this is a game like Minecraft or 7 Days to Die or Ark, but it's not. It's actually more like a third-person Diablo clone, where you go through repetitive random missions doing the same thing over and over again (mine, scavenge, shoot some zombies at the end). Not only is 80% of your time spent on scavenging and only 10% building and then 10% fighting, *everything you build disappears after the round*. Your namesake fort is not permanent. It only lasts about 5 minutes, and then you have to play another mission, spend another 30-40 minutes gathering, and then build another 5-minute fort. You don't get your resources back either.

That's the gameplay, which by itself is already overly grindy and tedious. Add in a gamble-to-progress and deck-building system and it soon becomes obvious that the gameplay was completely sacrificed in order to make room for a mobile-like pay-to-progress system. When you play the missions, the only loot you get are some crafting supplies and low-durability weapons that last only a few minutes of active use. To get weapons and traps that you can keep, you have to gamble with loot boxes ($1 each, or you can earn them in game at the rate of maybe 3-4 a week) and pray that you get "schematics", which let you craft them with the resources you've scavenged. Even the crafted weapons have limited durability. To give you an idea of the progression system, this is how you actually gain power:

    * Gamble for epic, legendary, or mythic ranged weapon schematics and then level them up by recycling other schematics. Keep in mind that even rarity is not a guarantee of quality, because the same item could spawn with different random bonuses, so even a legendary could potentially have bad bonuses.

    * Gamble for epic+ trap schematics and then level up them by recycling other schematics.

    * Gather enough crafting materials by repeating missions and quests over and over in order to craft any of the above.

    * Gamble for epic+ hero schematics and level them up by recycling other heroes. Although you only play one hero at a time, you can choose up to 2 other heroes to add to your "squad" to provide passive bonuses, like a health or armor boost. You have to level up the other heroes in your squad, too, in order to maximize your bonuses.

    * Gamble for epic+ "survivor" schematics and level them up by recycling other survivors. The survivors do not appear in game at all, they just give you passive bonuses like your extra squad heroes. However, whereas you only need three heroes, you need several DOZEN survivors, each assigned to a squad like "The Gadgeteers" or "The Engineers" or "Fireteam Alpha". You have to mix and match survivor jobs AND personalities to maximize their effect, and that's in addition to the rarity system and the level system. By estimation, you'll probably need several hundred dollars of llamas to get anywhere near completion... or if you're playing for free, probably several lifetimes. Epic+ survivors drop very, very rarely.

    * Wait real-world time for research points to accrue, and then spend them on really boring upgrades (like + a few points to health or damage). To make matters worse, research points are also used to "transform" weapons (Fortnite's equivalent of the Horadric Cube in Diablo, which lets you transform unwanted items into something else). So you have to wait for several days worth of research to either gain some tiny passive bonus or use it to transform several of your items into ONE random item.

    * Gain XP and skill points to level up your skill tree (different from research), which is a mix of passive buffs and the occasional active skill. Something as simple as melee heavy attacks is buried deep in the tree, accessible only after 10+ hours of XP grind. Other much-needed game mechanics, such as the ability to recycle or transform items, are also buried in the skill tree. After 20 hours played, I still have not yet finished the first tier of the skill tree. It reminds me of Path of Exile, and not in a good way... when active game mechanics (i.e., the skills and abilities that add variety and gameplay challenge) are locked behind stupid passive buffs, there's only one real explanation... they want to lengthen the process to keep you paying.

    * There's also a "Collection Book" that requires you to sacrifice schematics and personnel for rewards. Once you sacrifice something, they're gone forever and you have to re-collect it from a llama if you want to keep using it. This is on top of the already insane need for recycling and gambling.

Fortnite is a great idea sadly destroyed by greed.

I give Fortnite: Save the World a Feature Creep/10
It feels like it wanted to do everything and failed as a result. It wanted to be a tower defense, it wanted to be a survival game, it wanted to be an Online RPG, it wanted to be a micromanagement simulator. And with all of these things, there are just better options.

To cut a long story short the game could get more and could be better if the only aim of EpicGames wasn't money. Should we nerf some weapons, fix bugs and upgrade the other weapons, that were the least used? No, no, no. New skins, custom skins for weapons and vehicles, new donation packs - this is what we want.

The game was fun but needed further development in later stages of the game and a bit more variety to keep it interesting. Perhaps they struggled with the concept as it was too hard to execute for them and they weren't making enough money off it. Nonetheless, beta-testers like myself saw great potential in the concept and continued to play in the hopes the developers would pull it off.

Smelling their impending doom and thirsty for their souls, Satan came to the developers with a magical USB memory stick and told them that on this stick were the the blueprints to their financial success, and all they had to do was sign their souls away to have it. Happy to pay Satan's price, they jacked the memory stick into every computer in the company and downloaded the blueprints. As their souls were sucked into Satan's mouth, their collective void was filled with a new idea: a way to get people to pay for useless digital fluff instead of compelling gameplay via a fad-like gameplay called Battle Royale. They learned to treat customers poorly by ignoring customer service requests sent by players whose accounts had been hacked (all for the profits). They sell useless character skins to players to cover up the poor gameplay and actually charge money for emotes. Emotes! And so the notion of cooperatively saving the world died along with the developers' souls.

Do you want a PUBG where you can't see where people land, doesn't have a free look button and doesn't explain anything? Do YOU want a PUBG where it feels like it wants to be competitive but has none of the aspects that allow you to be competitive?

    Well have I got a game for you . . . FORTNITE.

All jokes aside, these are all true. Almost every single game I played for the entirety of my experience in-game consisted of people who spammed wooden walls in the situation where they're found in an open field (y'know, where you should die in any other game) or they'd simply hop up and down (usually with a jetpack) while firing shots at you and usually winning the engagement.

The game attempts to be a Battlefield Heroes-esque type game but fails to do that as almost all fights boil down to the same mechanics that weren't even intended for that purpose.

It is obvious they intended the crafting aspect to be used for creating/constructing badass forts that you can also put traps in (There are trap floors in the game) but no one bothers doing that. Everyone simply uses their resources to create walls on the fly, in the middle of combat, to give them cover LITERALLY ANYWHERE.

Oh did I mention that there's almost no falling damage? You can fall from a 5 story building and MAYBE take about 15 points of damage.

Just leave this game to die out in the sun where it belongs. If you want a competitive KOTH game, play PUBG or another of the variants. If you want a crafting KOTH game, there's far better games out there that restrict crafting to not be used in the middle of combat.

You push enemies by building cover until you're close enough to one shot them with a shotgun and pretty much only snipers are shotguns are any real use. This could be fixed with just some minor tweaks but much like most games, the people that don't like it, simply don't play and the one that stay long enough have to compete with a hivemind mentality that just makes accusations about how the person complaining is just bad. The devs think the game is what the players want but really it's just that nobody who knows the flaws cares enough to complain and just sticks to pubg because at least pubg isn't bad by design but rather lack of developer experience. So me and my 3 buddies decided to buy STW about 25 days ago. We've played it everyday for over 8 hours a day. It started out as great fun but that soon ended. So here's my review for this game.

INTRO [0/10]: So first of all this free2play game costs money, why? I don't know, the only reason I can see is pure GREED. However, you are able to earn a LOT of vbucks and I mean a LOT, in those 25 days I gathered over 7500 v bucks, so that is really nice. But since you're (epic) charging money for a f2p game I'm gonna be extra harsh, it's a horrible business practice that gets no respect from me, especially with all this money going to fund BR and none of the BR success goes back to actually finishing this game in a decent timeline.

DEVELOPMENT [0/10]: The devs clearly do not care about the game or it's community as BR gets all the updates. The only updates STW gets are some to keep the fanboys with no back spine happy. Like the recent "change your gun stats" update, praised to heaven and back but really it's just terrible when you consider after roughly 30 boring quests there are none and after seeing the first zone you've seen them all, just terrible. 7 YEARS it took EPIC to develop this EPICLY POS grinding simulator, no offense. The events are GREAT fun but should NEVER be the focus of the game, which it clearly is now. I don't feel like buying any llamas or skins anymore actually I feel like avoiding EPIC games now for many reasons. Saying there are 2 different dev teams is like saying there are 2 different teams for Wow PVE and PVP, I'm sure there are, and it's no valid excuse ESPECIALLY after an laughable 7 years of development already.

PROGRESSION [2/10]: You basically progress through llamas and llamas only, your alternative? well grinding your ass off, even Vanilla wow was less grindy, a game that had actual content offer besides the boring grinds it had. You don't level by playing a lot, naah course not this is 2018 you level by grabbing your moms credit card and buying llamas in hope for some sweet survivors/heros or that recycle xp. It's a terrible system and one of the many reasons STW failed EPICLY (pun intended) so far. Due to this system you'll out level your missions very quickly if you don't buy llamas. With me and one friend getting 200 llamas and 2 others none, we got to level 40 and they we're left at ~20 whistle end plank. One of the others is now 35 and another quit the game because he didn't feel like the game was rewarding enough and he's actually right, but than again we're all sub 30 we grew up with GOOD GAMES not empty ****

GUNPLAY [2/10]: The gunplay is just terrible, just like in BR we are dealing with legendary guns that shoot bullets EVERYWHERE but straight, unless you zoom but even than it's just terrible. The gun sounds a terrible compared to BR, on a distance you can't even hear the difference between any assault. Such a shame. I'm sure some "huge" update will fix it.

GAME CONTENT [2/10]: After the first 5 missions you have basically seen the ENTIRE game, it will not change, there are no new missions, no new biomes except for your home base plot that you can ONLY use 10 times (there is no elite or infinite mode, after 10 invasions all of your work and resources are wasted), mobs will not really change, just in lvl and hp, it does not become much harder, going back to low levels is not really satisfying thanks to scaling, from 50k hp you'll get 7k, same for firepower etc. On top of that the already HORRIBLE story line just STOPS after plank, it just flat out stops and really there is no excuse for it to stop.--After 7 years of development time they couldn't be bothered with finishing their quest line.--So you're greeted with place holder quests that really nobody except for fanboys will want to do. Do 3x this boring mission again and again and again for no actual rewards. It's the No Man's Sky of today.

FUN FACTOR [8/10]: Is the game fun, yes absolutely, it has such HUGE potential and it's such a shame the devs are basically not fit for the job. By the time it goes f2p lots of people will have interest but will be turned of because well there is no content, there simply is none besides grinding the same mission over and over and over until your cry your eyes out.

GRAPHICS [9/10]: Like it or not the graphics are superb and we we're often impressed by them. It looks really cute which is one of the only reasons our female gamers wanted to give it a shot in BR and now STW, though the core game design stops them from playing--as it's well, really boring. One negative point being that EVERYTHING LOOKS THE SAME. Except for your home base there is no uniqueness to be found in the world which is a shame and just shows how lazy Epic game developers are, 7 YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT FFS!!!!

Imagine to play diablo 3 where a single item can drop in thousands of different variations and you farm costantly to find that one with the best attributes. Here it is the same but with a bigger loot table and ONLY CHESTS IN THE SHOP GIVE LOOT.

Every single aspect is behind a RNG chest, even your main character. In Alpha main characters were fixed and you had the ability to increase their level, etc. Lately they decided to milk money on them too making them cards like everything else, so you need to buy chests in the store to even drop high quality main heroes to use.

I have never wasted my time to write a review but this time it was necessary. Why?
As a hardcore player of Unreal Tournament 1999, I can not accept this game of such inferior caliber from Epic Games. It is slow and lame. In my first game I was able to kill 61 people out of other 99.
This game is boring; dull and disgusting--this means that it does not deserve the label of Epic Games.

Nowhere near worth buying under any circumstance. The only reason it currently has any players is because the BR mode is free to play. To put it simply, Fortnite is to PUBG what Paladins is to Overwatch; some neat ideas (such as building) but executed poorly. Worth a try, like any free game, but not worth spending much time on and definitely not worth paying any amount of money for.

Fortnite can be fun. There's one big problem though. The Servers. The servers in this game are really bad. Bad hit detection, a large delay in everything, and other things. Wait until they fix these servers. It can be an okay game without terrible servers.

So the game was meant to be free to play, then they made the game cost money which is good as that means no micro transactions etc, you get the full game straight away, oooo no, they've kept the free to play model and are double dipping, so you have to buy the game and then play on a free to play, pay to win model. WTF.

also keep in mind that they don't have a refund policy, so if you ask for a refund, they may or may not accept it.

TLDR: Do not buy this game! I'm current at level 20 that mostly main soldier with a maxed out hero, have put over 60-70 hrs into this game and uninstalled. You will be in a constant state of farming for basic materials just to "play" the game. I keep sinking hours into it thinking at one point the game will get better but it doesn't.

You will be in a constant state of farming for basic materials just to "play" the game. I keep sinking hours into it thinking at one point the game will get better but it doesn't.

    1. Horrible grind. I had to create many private games just to farm nuts and bolts for my guns and traps. Some missions require me to burn through 3000-4000 light ammunition. Basically at the start of every game you will see players spend the whole 5-10 min just mining materials. Welcome to being an SCV in SC2.
    2. Guns break and you have to recraft them. Constantly. Guns will break after 1-3 games depending. If someone leaves, be prepared to spend 2000 rounds of one ammo and 1500 of another. With that many rounds, your gun will be done with 8/10 of its lifespan. I recycle all my guns to get materials back but its not enough craft new guns.
    3. You will always be short one material or another. Despite being level 20 already, i'm still short on charcoal to make blast powder to make guns. So I have to now go create a private game to mine charcoal. Out of nuts and bolts? Mine cars in a private game. Out of silver? Go play games with silver as the rewards. But then that breaks your guns. Which you don't have anything to craft new ones with. I have two tiers of guns and avoid even upgrading some guns just so I can still use lower tier crafting material. But then you will just have to grind for nuts and bolts by destroying cars. It is endless nonfun gameplay. This isn't even grinding for levels but purely miserable.
    4. The only character that doesn't have ammunition issues is the ninja. They are melee and often have maxed out ammo so you can ask them for some ammo on games.
    5. Found a chest that glows? Surely you will get something good. Instead you get 20 light ammunition (that's not even one magazine full of a assault rifle that require 30). Traps? Low powered than you will need and does nothing to enemies.
    6. All powerful traps are crafted. You have to find schematics which allows you to craft. Good luck crafting them when some of them require 10-12 nuts and bolts, which you need for your ammo. You can only carry a max of 999 wood, brick, metal. Just to mine cars to get 999 metal for example will take you close to 10 minutes, and this includes me critically hitting the blue dot. And yes I leveled my pickaxe to max. Its the first thing I level.
    7. Epic level 20 solider. Bonuses include 16% chance to recover ammo, 10% ranged weapon bonus, 24% assault rifle bonus damage. I use an epic slug gun assault rifle (shotgun ammo), epic assault rifle, and a epic LMG. Those 3 are my main guns that uses different ammo but all count as assault rifle just so I can get the 24% extra bonus damage. Despite all that I still have issues with ammo, and crafting. Constant mine and grind.
    8. Too much luck. 50 hours of gameplay and the only time I got good items was from the free 15 llama loot from the founders edition of the game. Despite finishing missions over and over I got some usable rare items once via mini llamas (that are awarded doing regular missions).
    9. Premium V-bucks pay to play. Daily quests gets you 50 vbucks a day and you can swap out a daily quest if you dont like it once a day also. You can get vbucks via Challenge Quests. A lot of players even with 50hrs in don't realize that these challenge quests only go up to Stage 10. At the start you will complete these missions without even trying to aim for them. For example, I have a Eldrich Abomination - Stage 9, which requires killing 45 mist monsters for 50 vbucks. Once i completely it to Stage 10 I dont get it anymore. After which your account can only buy vbucks or get them via daily quests slowly. Painfully slowly.
    10. This game reeks of microtransaction design. Allowing players to gain vbucks early on but slow it down midgame. This basically lets players feel good at the start but start to feel pain later. Why? People are willing to spend $ to remove the pain. Every microtransaction based game does this. There are amazing articles on microtransaction game design and studies show players will spend money to remove pain more so than to gain an advantage. This game is painful to play.
10a. All your FORT (health, weapon dmg, shields, traps dmg) stats require you to get these survivors. These survivors can be gotten via llamas. I use all my survivor exp, and fully understand the system via reading on reddit and i use all survivor exp. Its just another way to over complicate something and add an RNG so that you can buy their llamas. A nonmicrotransaction game wouldn't have this sort of system.
    11. Many more issues such as HORRIBLE UI. One of the worst for a modern game. People botting and griefers who ruin the game. At the end of the day I ask, am I having fun. Answer is no.

Yeah, so I bought this for the Pve, and Epic just abandoned it for the cash cow. Have real problems with the UI, very unintuitive compared to Pubg, which is just all around a better game. Controls feel really clunky after update, accesibility was one of its greatest advantages over its competitors. But yeah, you messed up epic. You messed up. You messed up.

It fits perfectly for Save the World, which is in itself is a great game, but it sucks in Battle Royale.

Out of all the battle royale games, this one was the one I played the most, simply because how well optimized it was compared to PUBG and H1Z1. I always wished Fortnite had a no-building mode, yes I know it's what makes this game FORTnite, but it also ruins it.

For PvE purposes, building mechanic is actually pretty good. But for fast-paced action PvP? Nope. They needed to redesign the building system before launching BR, but it's too late now. Epic Games realized how broken, OP and unnecessarily important building was in BR, so they started to introduce demolition weapons such as C4, Sticky Bombs, Mini Gun, Quad Rocket and Stink Bombs. But as long as they refuse to rework building, it's going to suck ass.

There is no cooldown, no delay or penalty against spamming building, also editing wall parts is very difficult and buggy. I've said it before, it's extremely obvious this system was designed while PvE in mind.

Shooting sucks ass too. The ADS bloom is extremely high, even after all the patches. Shotguns are still extremely good at what they do, so someone with it is extremely likely to destroy someone without it in CQC.

There is no damage falloff on explosions. They do the same damage with a direct hit or AoE.

Save the World is a completely different game, a better game. BR is a haflassed cash grab. After coming on top as the most played game on Earth, they still charge 15 dollars per costume, and free battle pass has NOTHING in it.

There's really only a handful[This is a PvE/Save the World Review] I'll start off by saying that the game is largely structured around progression. There's a campaign, but the story is fairly lack luster. Most of the content in this regard comes in the form of characters with colorful personalities talking to you. Whether you find them charming, annoying or bland comes down to preference. There's really only a handful of different mission types and a couple dozen different maps, (some of which look extremely similar), that you unlock as you progress. The campaign missions basically give you busy work type tasks like fetch quests, kill X amount of baddies, win at playing X game mode in X district, stuff like that. Every map has a small number of different side quests you can do for random rewards and experience, though the rewards are often mundane. Most of your time spent on these worlds, in the early levels anyways, involves everyone completing these side quests until they're done or someone gets bored. The main mission can often be started at someone's choosing, but is sometimes on a 20min timer. The world is littered with lootable and farmable resources you can use to craft traps, weapons, ammo and buildings. The game has changed substantially so that attaining these resources isn't very grindy at all. Baddies now drop resources, mainly the sort for building structures. Once you've upgraded your pick axe a couple times you can farm really quickly if needed.

The main objectives almost always involve defending something. This is where you can construct a base, lay traps and gun down monsters or use various special abilities you can unlock. Bases tend to look largely the same, as you only need them for a short amount of time (under 10 min). Once the mission is over, they're gone. There are home defense missions that allow you to keep your base, but you can only play these missions every so often as you progress. There's a wide array of various traps, but they often aren't a necessity for defending. People will sometimes build a bunch of traps, but they won't get used because most people don't want to sit around watching cartoon zombies walk into them for 10 minutes. My understanding is that traps become more useful in the higher levels, (which take dozens of hours to get to).

From here the game is basically just repetition. You play on the same maps, completing the same objectives, doing the same generic campaign missions to level up your heroes', traps' and weapons' stats. As you level up, you're able to play in higher level ques, but the maps are still the same; the baddies are just stronger. You do eventually unlock new worlds with their own unique maps, but the maps are still largely similar throughout. In essence, you progress so you can play at higher levels so you can progress in order to play at even higher levels. Get it?

And that's the game. It's a massive progression machine filled with a never ending onslaught of dopamine releasing sounds and animations that make you feel like you've accomplished something. For some people, this is all they need to have fun; because for them, progression is the fun. But as far as novel gameplay goes, the game gets old fast. If your friends play more or less than you do, it's hard to play together because of the discrepancy in power levels.

Overall, the gameplay is either too hard or too easy depending on how strong you are compared to the world difficulty. If it's too hard, you'll simply die super fast to things and do no damage. If you're too strong, everything will drop like flies and you'll be considerably tanky. So typical RPG mechanics. The game actually has a diverse array of different baddies, but you only unlock them as you make your way through the campaign - which progresses ridiculously slow. Meaning the game is excruciatingly dull for a dozen hours worth of gameplay. It's like a really long, drawn out tutorial that never seems to give way to an actual story. There's a ton of interesting weapons to use, (though you need to randomly unlock schematics to craft them yourself), but you'll likely mainly use the few weapons you've been upgrading.

I haven't had an issue with the loot system and I haven't put a single penny, or V buck for that matter into buying lamas (the game's look box system), as I spend whatever V bucks I make on battle royale stuff. My hero and weapons have pretty much been absurdly over powered for the entirety of my play. There's a shop you can buy some high tier rotating items in for a limited time using money readily gained from doing missions and side quests. So getting a decent hero and gear doesn't seem to be a major issue right now, though getting the exact loot you want always comes down to really long odds.

I've put a lot of time into the game, as I find the basic formula relaxing and somewhat satisfying. But it's getting harder to play because of how uninspired and tedious the game is. Just a giant progression machine...

Fortnite's entire success revolves around the in-game purchases you are constantly reminded to restock on. "Hey! There's a new Fortnite skin out! I guess I'll have to spend 10 dollars on each one they add!" Since this game's target audience is on the edge of the premature, Epic Games has no problem displaying their corporate greed for all the world to see. They have made billions feeding off of 5-year-olds' parents' debit cards. Fortnite's childish mechanics and graphics make everything seem innocent and harmless, and since it's free, your first impressions on Fortnite are mild. You don't really see any problem with the game. Then you discover its toxic community and desire to devour your bank account in one gulp.

The reason I'm not giving this game a straight 0 is because the devs clearly put a lot of work into this game, and, this should go without saying, you need an amazing game and marketing team to make a free-to-play game the highest grossing game of all time, so huge props to the Epic Games team. But, there's one thing about Epic Games. Their workers have been in studies showing that most of them do 50, sometimes 60 to 70 hour work weeks. Fortnite's massive success has led to the hundreds of workers at Epic have depressing lives and are eternally stressed out. If there's a bug in the game, they fix it immediately: they don't milk their customers into buying the game once and then not doing anything about it, they (I can't believe I'm about to say this) care about their players.

So, if you plan on playing Fortnite, be warned of this company's greed for money and not to fall into the trap of no longer being a 'lonely default skin.' This game can be fun at times, but I just lost it when they added a 'story' to Fortnite, which may be the dumbest thing that has happened to any AAA game. IT'S NOT AN RPG!
