The game has great controls. Everything is clearly visible, despite the brutal turmoil all around. A harsh critic might be able to point out the lack of a map, but the question is whether the lack of the ability to get your bearings quickly wasn't an intended part of the dark game. And if the blood, madness and tentacles weren't enough, you can jump into Endless mode and experience it all again, and even more directly! [Issue#320]

Forgive Me Father is a good first-person shooter that, despite embracing the retro concept, does not rely on nostalgia to draw players in. I played it relatively cautiously, conserving ammo when I could, and I didn’t feel like the madness system worked against me. But the game is at its best in the big arena fights, with big groups of enemies, a shredding soundtrack, and no option but to take the fight to them. The limited narrative works well for it, mostly because players can focus on the combat and on how they can improve their performance. The game should deliver more combat arenas and fewer jumping puzzles, but overall Forgive Me Father is one of the best retro FPS experiences of the moment.

Forgive me Father has confirmed all the good things seen in the Early Access version and is a candidate to become one of the best old-fashioned FPS of the year.

Forgive me Father mashes 2.5D with comic-style graphics and Lovecraft themes to bring you a back-breakingly fast-paced and frantic shooter that rewards precision and good ammo management.

    H. P. Lovecraft made into a comic book made into a video game, a breathless shooter accompanied by an awesome metal soundtrack. The guns are fun and their upgrades interesting, there are two different playable characters - yes, there are also blemishes, but you definitely shouldn’t miss this indie FPS.

Perhaps Heavenly Father will forgive us for the violence we commit in this retro FPS full of monsters, weapons, and comics animations.

If H. P. Lovecraft’s fiction is close to your heart and you enjoy retro shooters, you will be delighted by Forgive Me Father. Despite its shallow narrative the game puts a lot of effort into making you feel like a protagonist in one of the works by Master from Providence.

Forgive me Father delivers well on its premise. There’s a real sense of passion and identity to this game. From the story to the visuals to the level design, you can tell the developers have a lot of love for the genres they are working with. There creativity pays off with a great game that pays homage to retro games and films alike. Other than some minor issues that can be ironed out in an update, the game is a fantastic shooter horror that old and new gamers will get a kick out of.

This is a one-of-a-kind horror FPS delight. All the game’s nuances and features come together to craft an ode to H.P. Lovecraft that the author himself would be proud of. With incredible gunplay, myriad secrets to uncover, a gorgeous aesthetic, and memorable boss encounters, its technical issues don’t quite stop Forgive Me Father from being something a die-hard FPS fanatic looking for a fresh, new experience should miss out on.

Forgive Me Father's single-player campaign lasts around eight hours and there's never a dull moment to be had. The game is challenging and the player will need to use every resource at their disposal to survive each stage, but it offers that Soulslike feeling of satisfaction when overcoming overwhelming odds. There has been a revival for retro shooters on modern platforms in recent years, with games like Doom 64 and Quake coming to modern platforms, and Forgive Me Father proves that there's room for new games in the genre that retain everything that makes them fun while adding some new elements to spice things up.

A peculiar FPS that will appeal to those who love H.P. Lovecraft, to those who miss the legendary DOOM of the past and to those who are ready to ignore some flaws in the name of old-fashioned fun.

At times, Forgive Me Father feels like a great idea that lost its way during development. There’s no denying that it offers a robust package of first-person shooting gameplay, but I can’t shake the feeling that there’s so much more it could offer. With more emphasis on the narrative and the addition of more interesting mechanics beside shooting and strafing, this could be a much more robust experience. For now, it’s recommended only to hardcore FPS throwback fanatics. [Early Access Provisional Score = 65]

This game knocks the aesthetics out of the park.
Gameplay is fast, unforgiving and loads of stressful fun.

I would recommend the game but it left mixed feelings of something having great potential and losing it.

    Pros.: - Lovecraftian mythology.
I would recommend the game but it left mixed feelings of something having great potential and losing it.

    Pros.:
    - Lovecraftian mythology.
    - Design.
    - Multiple enemies.
    - Upgrade tree.
    - Small Easter Eggs and references to the Lovecraftian stories.
    - Decent level design.

    Cons.:
    - The game resembles and exploits Blood aesthetics. It could be as sophisticated in game design as Blood was. For instance, not just doors but hidden passages could be included. Fractured walls with secrets.
    - Secrets are too simple.
    - The biggest problem is a lack of details. For example, they refer to the particular Lovecraftian lore. And that's it. There could be a puzzle to get some special skill or special temporary ability. Instead, there is nothing. Next, there are lines the characters say when you play. But the more you progress the more insanity you get, the more situation differs from the beginning. Instead, you hear the same stupid brave quotes from the beginning. The game based on Lovecraftian lore requires the feeling of progression and deterioration of the characters' mental state - but there is none. The poor level of details on the levels makes it feel even more (for instance, nothing in barrels, items, etc.).
    - Story items are mostly garbage. Yes, we know more what's going on - but the villain was quite obvious already during the first act. There should have been some effect of what you get if you gather details. Maybe additional mechanic of investigation (we're investigators) boosting your abilities but forcing the character to get insanity faster. There are so many options. None is made instead.

Remember, it is 2023 now. It is not 1998 like when Blood and similar games were released. Though, those games are still well-played (I finished first Blood recently). Even recent Cultic felt more like a game of more fulfillment.
