    It was just wonderful. The story, the animation, the combat system. One of my favourite games, by far!

    A boring action game and a dull Final Fantasy game
    First of all it's incomplete, and second it wasn't even a Remake in the first place.
    Why even bother to defend this fanfiction?

    One of the most terrible actions games I've had the misfortune to play. A bad Final Fantasy game.
    Very linear, very easy, monotonous, boring and with a plot so bad that it leaks everywhere...
    An overall very bad experience

    P.S.: it has also a badly optimization.
    With glitch, framerates drops, and low textures pop up

    At least Tifa understands me.

    The game's combat system feels like it doesn't always work. There's a lot of unnecessary walking, boring side activities, and so on. The characters and storytelling are pretty good.

    So here I am, I finally finished Final Fantasy 7 Remake, I'm going to post my opinion on the game but before that I'd like to tell you that I never played the original so I don't have any point of comparison, the only FF7 I had played was Crisis Core on PSP.

    So here I am, I finally finished Final Fantasy 7 Remake, I'm going to post my opinion on the game but before that I'd like to tell you that I never played the original so I don't have any point of comparison, the only FF7 I had played was Crisis Core on PSP.

    The scenario at first, it's quite simple I found it simply bad. It's long, nothing much happens, the dialogues are pathetic but it's very well written, you can't blame it.
    The characters all seemed to me rather ordinary, not to say stupid, no way to get attached to them.
    Cloud is the (Japanese) archetype of the taciturn hero, unfortunately he lacks charisma, Aerith raves about flowers, Barrett speaks too loudly. Every time he opens his mouth it is to shout. Remain Tifa, she doesn't fly more than the others but she fights hand to hand, that's a quality. I won't talk about Sephirot, we don't see him much but his appearances were more ridiculous than the others but well, we'll say that the character will be developed in the sequel. It reminds me that someone told me that Cloud was autistic, it's a bit the feeling I have with Sephirot. What if this was FF7, a fight to the death between two autistic people?

    The worst thing is that if the main storyline is not very inspired, it's much worse in the side quests. And people are even more stupid I think. It seems to be the norm in Midgar.
    An example comes to mind where we talk to a guy and he tells us he is a journalist and wants to know about the guardian angel, a thief who steals from the rich to give to the poor. Cloud who then has a flash of genius asks him why he would not go to make it himself, the journalist answers him that he tried to question the inhabitants of the shantytown but that he had discovered that he was journalist and of the blow did not wish to cooperate. It turns out that the NPC in question is wearing an armband with press written on it. One wonders how they found out about his job.
    And the game is full of this kind of nonsense, some will see it as second degree. I'll let everyone make up their own mind.

    Another thing that bothered me a lot during the whole game. The fact that the game stutters. It is constantly stopping you from playing.
    Whether it's through pointless cinematics that are unnecessarily long every 4 minutes, the crevasses to cross during the whole adventure, the very regular moments where the game decides to make you walk or the famous pipes to cross with the agility of a ryo hazuki. It was tiring.
    Game, let me **** play. :crazy:
    Besides, there are too many cinematic, they are there all the time it's tiring. It must have a ratio of 5 minutes of gameplay for 15 minutes of cinematics.

    Now it's time for the level design:
    It's quite simple, there is none. It's a straight line, generally the dungeons and the cities are a very small area. At least I don't risk to be lost, that's something.

    The RPG systems, well, again, they don't break the bank.
    So we have the usual stats increases at each level, a skill tree (as ugly as not very ergonomic by the way) on each weapon, which allows you to increase the damage, to have some passives or to unlock material slots, nothing original but it does the job.
    I have to say that I have mixed feelings about the materials system. I would have preferred that our characters gain skills as they level up, instead of having to place spells directly in slots. It's not an idea ♥♥♥♥, it allows to make a choice between the skills to choose, the thing that annoys me is that there are a lot of materiala that I never used. Why would I do ♥♥♥♥♥ to take Flight, when I can have a materiala that allows me to throw Haste or a physical shield. That's my big regret, we focus on the useful materia and leave the rest aside because of lack of space.

    The combat system is the greatest quality of this game. Well in normal, its biggest flaw is that the game is really very easy. But it is still a nice game system.
    Nothing very complicated, you launch analysis, you look at the weaknesses of the enemies, you raise your shock bar and then you chain it with everything that passes under your sword. But it's fun and it works, that's all we ask. I wouldn't have minded a little more challenge in normal though. I was told that the hard mode was good for pushing the battle system unfortunately you unlock it after finishing the game. And I don't really want to do it again.

    Some sequences that I found very heavy and without interest too. The motorcycle, the platform / QTE of Tifa, the dance contest, the mini squat game. It has the merit of being done quickly. Well, except for the last phase on the motorcycle which was too long for its own good.

    Technically it's solid, the music is good and artistically it's nice too. In fact, apart from Cloud and Sephirot who look very poor cosplay from the japan expo I think it looks pretty good.

    it's not worth more than 20€/$ for me.

    It's hard for me, an ex-diehard Square stan, to review a game like this on so many levels. A lot of my formative years involved Square games. FF1 through 9, Chrono Trigger and Cross, Secret of Mana, FF Tactics, Super Mario RPG, heck, even Parasite Eve. Back in the early- to mid- '90s, it seemed like Square had the Midas touch. So whenever news of their work would appear, I'd get very excited. I still remember my first glimpse of FF2/4 in Nintendo Power, close to a screenshot of Battle Dodgeball with a chibi Ultraman or something. A tiny screenshot, a fight against Ice Beasts in the tower of Zot or Bab-il, in a magazine from July of 1991. I remember the feels. The promise of excitement, the seemingly infinite potential of 16 bits. Square totally delivered on that promise, and kept delivering for a really long time. Squeenix can still dangle some quality IP carrots in front of me, and the compulsion to taste the forbidden vegetable remains. There's an absurd amount of high quality games in their back catalog.

    That's what makes this review so painful. FF7 Remake makes me feel very different feels from that 1991 Nintendo Power snippet, or the feels from first starting up the original FF7. I don't feel hope and excitement for the future, I don't imagine the infinite possibilities video games can offer. All I feel is mild shame and regret that my almost middle-aged ass needs to cut ties with one of the formative entities of its youth.

    To save everyone some time, I'll just list the stuff I dislike from the game. I am a '98 PC guy, so she's Aeris to me.

    In somewhat chronological order, I do not like:
    - Jessie's unwanted advances and persistence;
    - how Sephiroth is introduced;
    - the dementors;
    - the sidequests and "changing water filters";
    - the new Johnny;
    - Chadley;
    - that Cloud doesn't have a hangover after getting paid;
    - the motorbike section, it's way too long;
    - Roche, he's pointless;
    - that there are other, more moderate branches of Avalanche, it makes Barret look like a psycho extremist;
    - turning off the solar lamps;
    - Cloud almost beheading Reno;
    - that everyone and their uncle in sector 5 keeps telling me how sweet Aeris is;
    - Kyrie;
    - Mireille;
    - helping kids (in the game; in real life I'm indifferent to helping kids);
    - Butch, Beck, and Burke;
    - that we need to see them more than once;
    - the robot arm "puzzles";
    - running from one of the Wall Market's map to the other just to pad for time;
    - Wall Market's new song;
    - the Hell House fight;
    - the sewers and the pump mini-game;
    - the ghosts in the train graveyard adding playtime, yet nothing to the story or Aeris' characterization;
    - Aeris walking slowly during the plate bombing crisis;
    - Wedge surviving falling from the pillar thanks to his grappling hook;
    - Wedge surviving a city falling on top of him;
    - that Tetsuya Nomura - a man over the age of 50 - seemingly kept Wedge alive just to make fat jokes;
    - the game undermining the shock and inhumanity that the destruction of Sector 7 conveyed in the original by saving most of its residents;
    - the generic bad guy music that plays in the president's office instead of his soothing classical music;
    - the Cait Sith cameo;
    - Barret shooting rocks (who came up with this one?);
    - Elmyra telling the team to not rescue Aeris;
    - Aeris seeing the future and becoming an exposition machine;
    - Leslie and the incredibly stupid plan to get help from Don Corneo;
    - the purple ooze instead of blood;
    - that Barret - previously established psycho extremist Avalanche guy - saves his mortal enemy, the president of Shinra, from falling to his death;
    - president Shinra dying 30 seconds later for "reasons";
    - Sephiroth's buildup being so weak;
    - Sephiroth's motivation being undefined;
    - Barret getting stabbed and then magically surviving;
    - basically anything that happens after this point.

    I don't think any of these are particularly spicy takes. When the game constantly reminds me how terrible the new content is, how much better and more efficient the storytelling was 25 years ago, it's hard to think of this as a good game. I blindly supported Squeenix for literal decades, spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars on their products, so this just hurts. Is this what they think of their fanbase? Is this what they think of ME? I've been in this toxic relationship for too long, and FF7 Remake just demonstrates how much we've changed and drifted apart in the past 15-20 years. They can still produce some decent stuff - they co-developed NEO: TWEWY, at least - but when the majority of their products are buggy remakes of great games - i.e. making their old games worst - I just have to reevaluate my life choices and cut my losses. I'm sorry Squeenix, it's not you, it's me. ... Who am I kidding, it's you, you suck.

    Felt totally disconnected to the character as he just does his own thing. Lost total interest at the cross dressing part. This may appeal to some and that's okay, doesn't appeal to me.
    Movies place a 'S', 'N', 'L' tag for sex, nudity and language. Perhaps games should do the same for a certain category to alert buyers to what they're getting in to.
    Most of the 'game' is watching instead of playing. When you do get a chance to play then there is another bout of extensive dialogue, while strolling through the streets at a forced minimal pace.

    Ich habe Cloud gerne durch die linearen Level gesteuert und bin gern mit Tifa und Astrit durch die Sektoren spaziert, das war immer wirklich sehr schön, wie die Charaktere reden, vor allem die beiden, die reden so kindlich und dabei kann man wunderbar runterkommen, für mich ein Spiel zum Entspannen mit einer schönen Geschichte für´s Auge.

    Gekämpft habe ich auch gerne, entweder einfach nur mit normalen Angriffen drauf und sobald ich dann ein oder zwei Balken hatte, habe ich gerne einen Spezialangriff oder eine Magieattacke eingesetzt. Wenn ich vom ganzen Buttonsmashing mal eine Pause brauchte, habe ich die normale Steuerung einfach vom Spiel übernehmen lassen und gewartet, bis die Balken für meine nächste Magiefähigkeit hatte.

    Die Beschwörungen fand ich auch extrem gut, vor allem den ersten Feuerdämon und die Limitangriffe waren ebenfalls cool. Im Kampf gab es auf jeden Fall immer genug zu tun, zumal man auch zwischen den Charakteren wechseln kann, ich habe sehr gerne Entfesselung, Y, X, X, X mit Tifa eingesetzt, damit habe ich alles klein bekommen.

    Generell nimmt sich das Spiel auch nicht so ernst, das ist wohl voll Final Fantasy und es gibt sehr viel Videospiellogik, auch wenn ich hiervor echt viele gute Games gezockt habe, ist dies mit eins der besten der letzten Jahre und ich freue mich schon sehr auf die ganzen Fortsetzungen und hoffe, das Gameplay wird auch für die kommenden Teile so bleiben oder sich mit dem von FF16 abwechseln, wird bestimmt sehr viel actionreicher, aber dieses entspannte Gameplay ist für mich jetzt voll Final Fantasy.

    Good combat, great port. Stunning Graphics + Music + Performance.
    Also a nice story so far. The icing on the cake for me would have been slightly more moral ambiguity (kinda like the Witcher) because you're basically working for a terrorist organization and I feel there was slightly more potential in this topic.

    The PC version already has the improved textures from the PS5 version, but sometimes you'll just notice crappy textures, environments or NPCs that haven’t fully loaded yet, and of course image tearing in some not-so-frequent moments. The PC version is good, but personally I'd reach for the PS5 version which just runs smoother. [Issue#317]

    FF7R is a fantastic reimaging of the iconic title. Refusing to classify itself as a nostalgia act, it expands upon the original narrative in new and exciting ways. The combat system has a seamless fluidity to it, allowing for engaging and entertaining gameplay sequences. Artistically, FF7R retains the level of quality players have come to expect from Square Enix, but it does falter ever so slightly in some environments. The updated rendition of the classic OST is outstanding from start to finish, with the sound design team matching it in every regard.

    Final Fantasy VII Remake is a visual marvel, and the environment focussed story is perhaps more relevant now than ever. The slick gameplay and new story twists make the game worth playing even for old school fans. The game does overstay its welcome, however. And the sidequests are a bit bland. Luckily, the Intergrade chapter largely fixes these complaints. If Square Enix stays that course, then Rebirth promises to be great.
