Expand

    side missions are boring.
Some of the main story progression could be more interesting. The world is there but you can't interact with it. Might as well have made it a top down game.

Lets just put aside the fact that this is an epic exclusive, buggy, bare-boned PC port apparently worth 80 euros and lets talk about the actual game for a second.

I really wanted to love this game as someone who absolutely loves the original and its story. It does get a lot of things right, yet a lot of other things terribly, terribly wrong. For every iconic moment done right, there's hours upon hours of hit or miss (mostly miss) filler content and insultingly shallow side-quests. The voice acting ranges from pretty good, to teeth grindingly cringe. However, the main problem resides with the story itself.

Some of the extended lore, scenes and character back-stories were done very well, and turning midgar from a few dozen screens into a bigger, living space was a treat for the most part. However, without spoiling, the pacing is out the window, you see characters which should not be in Midgar at this point being in Midgar, and important late-game revelations are spoiled considering we are 6 hours into the original 30 hours. For those who know, the original was harsh regarding loss, yet in this game that is undermined (to put it lightly) which wrecks the message, the urgency and the character motivations. Up to this point I would have given this game a 7. That however, is somehow shadowed by the kingdom hearts inspired, narrative-shattering new elements that give this game a bad fan fiction feel, especially at the end. This is not a "They changed muh game" moment, it's a "This new meta writing is downright abysmal and makes the final product significantly worse" moment. The original despite being a fantasy cyberpunk story, was well grounded in reality. Suspension of disbelief doesn't work when this has sequences which would fit into the Matrix or Doctor Strange, filled with a good amount of amateourish plot conveniences and deus ex machinas which would have you get laughed and booed out of a movie premiere if it were a motion picture. It's so jarring that I don't even think that going forward the story will play anywhere near the same, as important plot points have been ret-conned. I didn't play the DLC as Yuffie being in Midgar (as the trailers show) pretty much says it all. The original story while not being perfect by any mean, was pretty straight forward, simple to follow and to understand. This remake is a convoluted mess which leaves you staring at the credits in confusion and disbelief.

I waited for this game for two years and my only two thoughts were "FF7 what have they done to you" and "who thought this was a good idea should just put down the pen and retire". If I give it a 5 and not something lower, it's because some iconic scenes were done great, the graphics were mostly beautiful (except when you're being greeted by low-poly textures in the forefront), the music was amazing and overall the gameplay was pretty fun. Its frustrating because to be honest, they were so close to making an amazing remake, but they just couldn't help themselves (looking at you Tetsuya Nomura), and as such don't see myself playing the rest of this remake saga. If you want to play this game, just keep in mind that this is not FF7, the "remake" tag is an outright fabrication. Although the game almost follows the original's plot closely, the new elements render this a full on re-write, on the same vein as if the Titanic was sank by a gang of underwater sharks and a giant speaking octopus. While you're at it, the price tag is not justified in the least, wait till it's on sale. For those who never played the original and want to see what all the fuss is about, this is not it. Do yourself a favor, grab the original on steam and download the SYW mod to turn it into a great remaster.

A great game, but awful PC port.
Performance issues, lack of graphic options, nightmare of a controls for some mini games and bike sequences (you can't change those) if you use M&KB.

Get a life you sad, sad people and realize the more you defend this the worse it gets.

It loses 5 points for that very shady move by Square Enix but they are well known for their pretty stupid decisions if you remember Deux Ex. It gets a 5 because its Final Fantasy and already has that reputation of being a great story with great mechanics.

Personally I would wait for the response Square Enix and Epic is going to get when they find PC sales are actually down because they overpriced it. Then it will be reduced to a £50 game. Even FFXV was only £35 when it released on PC.

Everyone knows why they get away with this on Consoles as the Console model is very similar to the Printer Ink model where the Console is sold at a loss and revenue is made up from the storefront and games but they don't have that excuse for PC users.

On the upside you could take advantage of the £10 off coupon Epic are currently giving out to offset the price increase.

UPDATE: At the time of this update, some poor sap that cant handle honest reviewing is also review bombing the game by giving it high marks with the most obvious sock account looking usernames. Don't bash it because of its exclusivity, and don't certainly artificially inflate it's score because you cant stand it being a rushed job and mediocre at best.

The new combat is almost the same as on XV even with the annoying huge ass obtuse lock on crosshairs over the enemies even if you never use lock on, but a little less dumb, because you cant just use potions whenever you want which made you invincible. Its not bad but not great either, to do anything other than the basic attack you have to use the menu like on the old turn based game. The summons are companions, like on the horribly awful Final Fantasy XII, but like on the braindead FF XV you can only use then when the game allows it, this is one of the biggest differences from the original game.

Characters will walk into each other, the world has no persistence at all(you kill a couple of monsters in a place, they evaporate, you walk 10 meters away and come back and they are there again), and the PC port is mediocre not even surporting ultrawide resolutions.

An action RPG which is a “remake” of the original Final Fantasy VII, interestingly, not only is it a genre shift from the first game, but the story itself diverges – and the divergence of the story is a major plot point. It expands on the Midgar section of the original game, a section of the game that took about 8 hours to beat, and turns it into a 40-60 hour long game, all while engaging in a few meta plot twists to keep players familiar with the game guessing how much things will change.

Unfortunately, this is the heart of the problem of the game: they didn’t know what to expand on, so they expanded on EVERYTHING, even making up a few new sequences. This makes the good parts even bigger and even better, and results in a few new sequences (like a sequence with the Avalanche sidekicks, who were largely a side note in the original game) which really worked well, and added significant characterization – but the game also expanded on the bad parts, resulting in what were previously brief inter-area travel sequences or mini-dungeons becoming two hours long (or longer!) of endless corridors, and some added dungeons that weren’t even in the original game which added nothing to the game but length.

At its best, it strikes an excellent balance between characterization and humor that was common in 1990s JRPGs, then sort of faded from view. At its worst, it is hours of slogging down corridors and fighting monsters that aren’t very challenging to fight, over and over again.

The best part of this game is the improvements in characterization. Every single character is more interesting, including the random background Avalanche characters, the Shinra characters, and even the random side characters in the Wall Market. Barret in particular ends up with a sort of almost preacher-esque character, which is really fun to see – doubly so because for all of his bravado and being so big and bad, he’s clearly got issues underneath and is putting on a bit of a show. Tifa’s insecurity comes through much more strongly than it did in the original game, and Cloud ends up with significantly more characterization, being both uncertain and putting on a show of being a badass SOLDIER. Aerith’s personality, too, shines through, with her playful mischief being a major highlight – at least, until she ends up becoming the Cetra Waif, which makes her much less interesting and more subdued (and generic).

This goes down to the background Avalanche members, who get a lot more characterization, and thus build more of a connection with the player, as well as the random people in Wall Market, including some new characters, including the sadistic masseuse Madam M, a bit character whose interactions with Cloud are absolutely hilarious.

The introductory sequence, the added characterization for Avalanche members (including a whole chapter that is totally devoted to them), the Aerith meeting all the way through Wall Market, the battle up the pillar to try and defend Sector 7, going up the Shinra building, and the battles at the top of the tower – all of these sequences are improved over the original, and add new context and characterization.

Unfortunately, this is a game with 18 chapters, and in the end, chapters 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, and 17 all contain very significant padding – meaning that over half the chapters in the game contain significant filler content. Worse, chapters 5, 6, 10, 11, 15, and 17 are basically entirely filler, with the only significant events occurring with the boss fights in them (and sometimes, not even then).

This is a huge black mark on the game; it is the quality new story content that draws us in, but the vast amount of filler means that it ends up spaced out. Worse, it weakens the story very significantly; half of the game (chapters 5-7, 10 – 12, and 15-18) are all done under very significant time pressure, but each of these three sequences includes not one but *two* filler chapters, where you basically go through a “dungeon” that is just a bunch of corridors or pseudo-corridors. None of these are interesting, and they just bog down the progress of the game while robbing it of the sense of urgency that the pacing of these parts so desperately need.

Perhaps the saving grace is that the combat of the game is pretty reasonable; while the normal encounters are mostly pretty easy, the game has a few sub-boss type enemies that help mix things up and provide more of a challenge.

Still, overall, the game feels bloated. It's an improvement over the original overall, but sacrifices pacing in a very real way.

Overall, it's worth playing if you are a FF7 fan, or are really into action RPGs, but if you aren't a huge fan of those kinds of games, this isn't something you need to go out of your way to experience.

    + World feels alive
    + a LOT of content
+ Voice acting is spot on
    + Interesting characters
    - Wish I had more understanding on the story, more explanations on the whys and hows, too much stuff left unanswered
    - Some fights (particularly the road chases) are painfully long. Not hard, but enemies are just sponges, it just becomes a drag which is sad because there's no skill attached to it, just a matter of patience and not sleeping through it.
    - Story pacing is all over the place, there's chunks that feel that is taking forever and it feels that we're playing a filler just to waste time on it.
    - Photomode is really weak, those filters is just a sham
    - The graphics options are no where to be seen.

+ / - The music sometimes is gorgeous, sometimes it's really out of context, particularly the jukebox ones, they're all really meh.

The game is 9/10, but I have to give it a 6/10 for its poor PC optimization, the game constantly runs at 60+ fps for 10 seconds and then drops to 0, this happens all the time. Also there aren't many graphics options, just Low and High Texture/Shadow, and no way to disable Dynamic Resolution.

Final Fantasy VII could be the best game in the world, but that doesn't justify greed that we're subjected to.
After 2 years we're finally able to play the game on Steam, but we still pay full price on fake discount.
We might have to wait another 2 years to play part two, which will be the same game for another $70, and they announced that they're working on part three, which also easily

Assuming that they will finish it in three parts, total cost of the game comes to $210 and might take couple of years to finish.
I will enjoy the game, but I simply can't post positive review just for the greed of the company that makes it.

Probably the most disappointing one yet from the last 10 years.
First off, price is a total ripoff.
Non playable scenes in between is full of moans and groans. At one stage I zoned out reminiscing on another movie full of moans and groans, thus killing immersion a bit. Perhaps I am getting to old for childishness and I found the game had a lot of that. Felt totally disconnected to the

Felt totally disconnected to the character as he just does his own thing. Lost total interest at the cross dressing part. This may appeal to some and that's okay, doesn't appeal to me.
Movies place a 'S', 'N', 'L' tag for sex, nudity and language. Perhaps games should do the same for a certain category to alert buyers to what they're getting in to.
Most of the 'game' is watching instead of playing. When you do get a chance to play then there is another bout of extensive dialogue, while strolling through the streets at a forced minimal pace.

So here I am, I finally finished Final Fantasy 7 Remake, I'm going to post my opinion on the game but before that I'd like to tell you that I never played the original so I don't have any point of comparison, the only FF7 I had played was Crisis Core on PSP.

The scenario at first, it's quite simple I found it simply bad. It's long, nothing much happens, the dialogues are pathetic but

The scenario at first, it's quite simple I found it simply bad. It's long, nothing much happens, the dialogues are pathetic but it's very well written, you can't blame it.
The characters all seemed to me rather ordinary, not to say stupid, no way to get attached to them.
Cloud is the (Japanese) archetype of the taciturn hero, unfortunately he lacks charisma, Aerith raves about flowers, Barrett speaks too loudly. Every time he opens his mouth it is to shout. Remain Tifa, she doesn't fly more than the others but she fights hand to hand, that's a quality. I won't talk about Sephirot, we don't see him much but his appearances were more ridiculous than the others but well, we'll say that the character will be developed in the sequel. It reminds me that someone told me that Cloud was autistic, it's a bit the feeling I have with Sephirot. What if this was FF7, a fight to the death between two autistic people?

The worst thing is that if the main storyline is not very inspired, it's much worse in the side quests. And people are even more stupid I think. It seems to be the norm in Midgar.
An example comes to mind where we talk to a guy and he tells us he is a journalist and wants to know about the guardian angel, a thief who steals from the rich to give to the poor. Cloud who then has a flash of genius asks him why he would not go to make it himself, the journalist answers him that he tried to question the inhabitants of the shantytown but that he had discovered that he was journalist and of the blow did not wish to cooperate. It turns out that the NPC in question is wearing an armband with press written on it. One wonders how they found out about his job.
And the game is full of this kind of nonsense, some will see it as second degree. I'll let everyone make up their own mind.

Another thing that bothered me a lot during the whole game. The fact that the game stutters. It is constantly stopping you from playing.
Whether it's through pointless cinematics that are unnecessarily long every 4 minutes, the crevasses to cross during the whole adventure, the very regular moments where the game decides to make you walk or the famous pipes to cross with the agility of a ryo hazuki. It was tiring.
Game, let me **** play.
Besides, there are too many cinematic, they are there all the time it's tiring. It must have a ratio of 5 minutes of gameplay for 15 minutes of cinematics.

Now it's time for the level design:
It's quite simple, there is none. It's a straight line, generally the dungeons and the cities are a very small area. At least I don't risk to be lost, that's something.

The RPG systems, well, again, they don't break the bank.
So we have the usual stats increases at each level, a skill tree (as ugly as not very ergonomic by the way) on each weapon, which allows you to increase the damage, to have some passives or to unlock material slots, nothing original but it does the job.
I have to say that I have mixed feelings about the materials system. I would have preferred that our characters gain skills as they level up, instead of having to place spells directly in slots. It's not an idea ♥♥♥♥, it allows to make a choice between the skills to choose, the thing that annoys me is that there are a lot of materiala that I never used. Why would I do ♥♥♥♥♥ to take Flight, when I can have a materiala that allows me to throw Haste or a physical shield. That's my big regret, we focus on the useful materia and leave the rest aside because of lack of space.

The combat system is the greatest quality of this game. Well in normal, its biggest flaw is that the game is really very easy. But it is still a nice game system.
Nothing very complicated, you launch analysis, you look at the weaknesses of the enemies, you raise your shock bar and then you chain it with everything that passes under your sword. But it's fun and it works, that's all we ask. I wouldn't have minded a little more challenge in normal though. I was told that the hard mode was good for pushing the battle system unfortunately you unlock it after finishing the game. And I don't really want to do it again.

Some sequences that I found very heavy and without interest too. The motorcycle, the platform / QTE of Tifa, the dance contest, the mini squat game. It has the merit of being done quickly. Well, except for the last phase on the motorcycle which was too long for its own good.

Technically it's solid, the music is good and artistically it's nice too. In fact, apart from Cloud and Sephirot who look very poor cosplay from the japan expo I think it looks pretty good.

it's not worth more than 20€/$ for me.

The PC version already has the improved textures from the PS5 version, but sometimes you'll just notice crappy textures, environments or NPCs that haven’t fully loaded yet, and of course image tearing in some not-so-frequent moments. The PC version is good, but personally I'd reach for the PS5 version which just runs smoother. [Issue#317]

FF7R is a fantastic reimaging of the iconic title. Refusing to classify itself as a nostalgia act, it expands upon the original narrative in new and exciting ways. The combat system has a seamless fluidity to it, allowing for engaging and entertaining gameplay sequences. Artistically, FF7R retains the level of quality players have come to expect from Square Enix, but it does falter ever so slightly in some environments. The updated rendition of the classic OST is outstanding from start to finish, with the sound design team matching it in every regard.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is a visual marvel, and the environment focussed story is perhaps more relevant now than ever. The slick gameplay and new story twists make the game worth playing even for old school fans. The game does overstay its welcome, however. And the sidequests are a bit bland. Luckily, the Intergrade chapter largely fixes these complaints. If Square Enix stays that course, then Rebirth promises to be great.
