    It was just wonderful. The story, the animation, the combat system. One of my favourite games, by far!

    A boring action game and a dull Final Fantasy game
    First of all it's incomplete, and second it wasn't even a Remake in the first place.
    Why even bother to defend this fanfiction?

    One of the most terrible actions games I've had the misfortune to play. A bad Final Fantasy game.
    Very linear, very easy, monotonous, boring and with a plot so bad that it leaks everywhere...
    An overall very bad experience

    P.S.: it has also a badly optimization.
    With glitch, framerates drops, and low textures pop up

    At least Tifa understands me.

    The game's combat system feels like it doesn't always work. There's a lot of unnecessary walking, boring side activities, and so on. The characters and storytelling are pretty good.

    So here I am, I finally finished Final Fantasy 7 Remake, I'm going to post my opinion on the game but before that I'd like to tell you that I never played the original so I don't have any point of comparison, the only FF7 I had played was Crisis Core on PSP.

    So here I am, I finally finished Final Fantasy 7 Remake, I'm going to post my opinion on the game but before that I'd like to tell you that I never played the original so I don't have any point of comparison, the only FF7 I had played was Crisis Core on PSP.

    The scenario at first, it's quite simple I found it simply bad. It's long, nothing much happens, the dialogues are pathetic but it's very well written, you can't blame it.
    The characters all seemed to me rather ordinary, not to say stupid, no way to get attached to them.
    Cloud is the (Japanese) archetype of the taciturn hero, unfortunately he lacks charisma, Aerith raves about flowers, Barrett speaks too loudly. Every time he opens his mouth it is to shout. Remain Tifa, she doesn't fly more than the others but she fights hand to hand, that's a quality. I won't talk about Sephirot, we don't see him much but his appearances were more ridiculous than the others but well, we'll say that the character will be developed in the sequel. It reminds me that someone told me that Cloud was autistic, it's a bit the feeling I have with Sephirot. What if this was FF7, a fight to the death between two autistic people?

    The worst thing is that if the main storyline is not very inspired, it's much worse in the side quests. And people are even more stupid I think. It seems to be the norm in Midgar.
    An example comes to mind where we talk to a guy and he tells us he is a journalist and wants to know about the guardian angel, a thief who steals from the rich to give to the poor. Cloud who then has a flash of genius asks him why he would not go to make it himself, the journalist answers him that he tried to question the inhabitants of the shantytown but that he had discovered that he was journalist and of the blow did not wish to cooperate. It turns out that the NPC in question is wearing an armband with press written on it. One wonders how they found out about his job.
    And the game is full of this kind of nonsense, some will see it as second degree. I'll let everyone make up their own mind.

    Another thing that bothered me a lot during the whole game. The fact that the game stutters. It is constantly stopping you from playing.
    Whether it's through pointless cinematics that are unnecessarily long every 4 minutes, the crevasses to cross during the whole adventure, the very regular moments where the game decides to make you walk or the famous pipes to cross with the agility of a ryo hazuki. It was tiring.
    Game, let me **** play. :crazy:
    Besides, there are too many cinematic, they are there all the time it's tiring. It must have a ratio of 5 minutes of gameplay for 15 minutes of cinematics.

    Now it's time for the level design:
    It's quite simple, there is none. It's a straight line, generally the dungeons and the cities are a very small area. At least I don't risk to be lost, that's something.

    The RPG systems, well, again, they don't break the bank.
    So we have the usual stats increases at each level, a skill tree (as ugly as not very ergonomic by the way) on each weapon, which allows you to increase the damage, to have some passives or to unlock material slots, nothing original but it does the job.
    I have to say that I have mixed feelings about the materials system. I would have preferred that our characters gain skills as they level up, instead of having to place spells directly in slots. It's not an idea ♥♥♥♥, it allows to make a choice between the skills to choose, the thing that annoys me is that there are a lot of materiala that I never used. Why would I do ♥♥♥♥♥ to take Flight, when I can have a materiala that allows me to throw Haste or a physical shield. That's my big regret, we focus on the useful materia and leave the rest aside because of lack of space.

    The combat system is the greatest quality of this game. Well in normal, its biggest flaw is that the game is really very easy. But it is still a nice game system.
    Nothing very complicated, you launch analysis, you look at the weaknesses of the enemies, you raise your shock bar and then you chain it with everything that passes under your sword. But it's fun and it works, that's all we ask. I wouldn't have minded a little more challenge in normal though. I was told that the hard mode was good for pushing the battle system unfortunately you unlock it after finishing the game. And I don't really want to do it again.

    Some sequences that I found very heavy and without interest too. The motorcycle, the platform / QTE of Tifa, the dance contest, the mini squat game. It has the merit of being done quickly. Well, except for the last phase on the motorcycle which was too long for its own good.

    Technically it's solid, the music is good and artistically it's nice too. In fact, apart from Cloud and Sephirot who look very poor cosplay from the japan expo I think it looks pretty good.

    it's not worth more than 20€/$ for me.

    It's hard for me, an ex-diehard Square stan, to review a game like this on so many levels. A lot of my formative years involved Square games. FF1 through 9, Chrono Trigger and Cross, Secret of Mana, FF Tactics, Super Mario RPG, heck, even Parasite Eve. Back in the early- to mid- '90s, it seemed like Square had the Midas touch. FF1 through 9, Chrono Trigger and Cross, Secret of Mana, FF Tactics, Super Mario RPG, heck, even Parasite Eve. Back in the early- to mid- '90s, it seemed like Square had the Midas touch. So whenever news of their work would appear, I'd get very excited. I still remember my first glimpse of FF2/4 in Nintendo Power, close to a screenshot of Battle Dodgeball with a chibi Ultraman or something. A tiny screenshot, a fight against Ice Beasts in the tower of Zot or Bab-il, in a magazine from July of 1991. I remember the feels. The promise of excitement, the seemingly infinite potential of 16 bits. Square totally delivered on that promise, and kept delivering for a really long time. Squeenix can still dangle some quality IP carrots in front of me, and the compulsion to taste the forbidden vegetable remains. There's an absurd amount of high quality games in their back catalog.

    That's what makes this review so painful. FF7 Remake makes me feel very different feels from that 1991 Nintendo Power snippet, or the feels from first starting up the original FF7. I don't feel hope and excitement for the future, I don't imagine the infinite possibilities video games can offer. All I feel is mild shame and regret that my almost middle-aged ass needs to cut ties with one of the formative entities of its youth.

    To save everyone some time, I'll just list the stuff I dislike from the game. I am a '98 PC guy, so she's Aeris to me.

    In somewhat chronological order, I do not like:
    - Jessie's unwanted advances and persistence;
    - how Sephiroth is introduced;
    - the dementors;
    - the sidequests and "changing water filters";
    - the new Johnny;
    - Chadley;
    - that Cloud doesn't have a hangover after getting paid;
    - the motorbike section, it's way too long;
    - Roche, he's pointless;
    - that there are other, more moderate branches of Avalanche, it makes Barret look like a psycho extremist;
    - turning off the solar lamps;
    - Cloud almost beheading Reno;
    - that everyone and their uncle in sector 5 keeps telling me how sweet Aeris is;
    - Kyrie;
    - Mireille;
    - helping kids (in the game; in real life I'm indifferent to helping kids);
    - Butch, Beck, and Burke;
    - that we need to see them more than once;
    - the robot arm "puzzles";
    - running from one of the Wall Market's map to the other just to pad for time;
    - Wall Market's new song;
    - the Hell House fight;
    - the sewers and the pump mini-game;
    - the ghosts in the train graveyard adding playtime, yet nothing to the story or Aeris' characterization;
    - Aeris walking slowly during the plate bombing crisis;
    - Wedge surviving falling from the pillar thanks to his grappling hook;
    - Wedge surviving a city falling on top of him;
    - that Tetsuya Nomura - a man over the age of 50 - seemingly kept Wedge alive just to make fat jokes;
    - the game undermining the shock and inhumanity that the destruction of Sector 7 conveyed in the original by saving most of its residents;
    - the generic bad guy music that plays in the president's office instead of his soothing classical music;
    - the Cait Sith cameo;
    - Barret shooting rocks (who came up with this one?);
    - Elmyra telling the team to not rescue Aeris;
    - Aeris seeing the future and becoming an exposition machine;
    - Leslie and the incredibly stupid plan to get help from Don Corneo;
    - the purple ooze instead of blood;
    - that Barret - previously established psycho extremist Avalanche guy - saves his mortal enemy, the president of Shinra, from falling to his death;
    - president Shinra dying 30 seconds later for "reasons";
    - Sephiroth's buildup being so weak;
    - Sephiroth's motivation being undefined;
    - Barret getting stabbed and then magically surviving;
    - basically anything that happens after this point.

    I don't think any of these are particularly spicy takes. When the game constantly reminds me how terrible the new content is, how much better and more efficient the storytelling was 25 years ago, it's hard to think of this as a good game. I blindly supported Squeenix for literal decades, spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars on their products, so this just hurts. Is this what they think of their fanbase? Is this what they think of ME? I've been in this toxic relationship for too long, and FF7 Remake just demonstrates how much we've changed and drifted apart in the past 15-20 years. They can still produce some decent stuff - they co-developed NEO: TWEWY, at least - but when the majority of their products are buggy remakes of great games - i.e. making their old games worst - I just have to reevaluate my life choices and cut my losses. I'm sorry Squeenix, it's not you, it's me. ... Who am I kidding, it's you, you suck.

    Felt totally disconnected to the character as he just does his own thing. Lost total interest at the cross dressing part. This may appeal to some and that's okay, doesn't appeal to me.
    Movies place a 'S', 'N', 'L' tag for sex, nudity and language. Perhaps games should do the same for a certain category to alert buyers to what they're getting in to.
    Most of the 'game' is watching instead of playing. When you do get a chance to play then there is another bout of extensive dialogue, while strolling through the streets at a forced minimal pace.

    Ich war nie wirklich Fan der Reihe, weil mir das Gameplay, was ich zwischen guten Story Sequenzen brauche, nicht zugesagt hat. Dann schaue ich doch gleich lieber einen Anime oder eine Serie. Aber hier hat man eine sehr schöne Grafik, super Soundtracks und Action-Gameplay.

    Ich habe Cloud gerne durch die linearen Level gesteuert und bin gern mit Tifa und Astrit durch die Sektoren spaziert, das war immer wirklich sehr schön, wie die Charaktere reden, vor allem die beiden, die reden so kindlich und dabei kann man wunderbar runterkommen, für mich ein Spiel zum Entspannen mit einer schönen Geschichte für´s Auge.

    Gekämpft habe ich auch gerne, entweder einfach nur mit normalen Angriffen drauf und sobald ich dann ein oder zwei Balken hatte, habe ich gerne einen Spezialangriff oder eine Magieattacke eingesetzt. Wenn ich vom ganzen Buttonsmashing mal eine Pause brauchte, habe ich die normale Steuerung einfach vom Spiel übernehmen lassen und gewartet, bis die Balken für meine nächste Magiefähigkeit hatte.

    Die Beschwörungen fand ich auch extrem gut, vor allem den ersten Feuerdämon und die Limitangriffe waren ebenfalls cool. Im Kampf gab es auf jeden Fall immer genug zu tun, zumal man auch zwischen den Charakteren wechseln kann, ich habe sehr gerne Entfesselung, Y, X, X, X mit Tifa eingesetzt, damit habe ich alles klein bekommen.

    Generell nimmt sich das Spiel auch nicht so ernst, das ist wohl voll Final Fantasy und es gibt sehr viel Videospiellogik, auch wenn ich hiervor echt viele gute Games gezockt habe, ist dies mit eins der besten der letzten Jahre und ich freue mich schon sehr auf die ganzen Fortsetzungen und hoffe, das Gameplay wird auch für die kommenden Teile so bleiben oder sich mit dem von FF16 abwechseln, wird bestimmt sehr viel actionreicher, aber dieses entspannte Gameplay ist für mich jetzt voll Final Fantasy.

    Good combat, great port. Stunning Graphics + Music + Performance.
    Also a nice story so far. The icing on the cake for me would have been slightly more moral ambiguity (kinda like the Witcher) because you're basically working for a terrorist organization and I feel there was slightly more potential in this topic.

Final Fantasy VII has always been a lot more than a simple game in the well-known brand; as we know, it can be considered a franchise on its own, that has spawned different titles across various platforms and even CG movies, leaving some of those titles stuck in certain consoles for a very, very long time.

    What Square-Enix calls the “Remake Project” I believe intends to produce a cohesive experience, taking parts and bits from all that Compilation work we know exists, and shaping it into a lot more than a mere “remake” because, without getting into deep spoilers, yes, “Remake” is a lot more than just what we may think, it’s a subtitle for the first game, which indicates the direction the story in the game is headed to, more so than alluding to being the original game, but remade, with modern graphics.

    Certainly, most of the stuff that happened in the original story for the Midgar portion, does happen in Remake, for sure, and it’s even greatly expanded with incredible results: Animation work is excellent on the characters, their facial expressions do tell a lot of their intentions without even the need to put it into words, and the English voice over is quite fantastic.
    These characters feel like they’re alive and they show their emotions pretty well and, if we pay attention, it’s an important part of the story-telling in this game, how the different characters interact with each other.

    Let’s get a bit into PC specific port details, and let’s be straightforward here: this amazing game deserves a better PC version. I’m not saying it runs badly or it’s broken in any shape or way, it runs pretty nicely on my Ryzen 5 3600 and RTX 3060 Ti and, at 1620p DLDSR, certainly looks stunning and runs quite above 60 FPS at all times, but the PC port is pretty barebones: there’re only a couple Graphics Settings to choose from, and barely any performance scalability going from High to Low well…due to the lack of meaningful settings.
    I felt quite disappointed when the game initially launched, half a year ago, on the Epic Games Store, looking at the PC specific settings, and nothing has changed now, for the Steam release.

    Besides that, the price of the game is also quite insane for a standard PC digital edition: 80€ is not a common price among PC games but, fortunately, sales are a thing and there are various and official places to get games these days…so my advice is to look for the best price that suits your needs, no need to pay that much for a standard digital game when sales exist.

    One other amazing aspect in this game is the Soundtrack, which is absolutely incredible and I don’t think there’s any track in this game that I do not like, they’re all great, of course the expected favorites are still fantastic too and masterfully recreated for this game.

    Gameplay is pretty fluid and responsive and I never get tired of the slow motion mode when opening the menus in battle, it’s a nice effect, completely optional if we don’t want to use it…but it’s really cool and nicely implemented.

    Overall, I think this game nails down pretty well what I was expecting, and even surpassed all I could have thought of, in a good way.
    Knowing how the original story goes is a plus when playing this new game, it’s not really needed but surely rewarding to know all the backstory from the original game, especially when doing more play-throughs, you will end up picking up more subtle details that have been planted into this game’s plot and its characters, many, many references and subtle hints in here.

    It is a plot that leaves us with many questions, lots theories that we can think of, but the hints are all there in the game, and even more so for those who know all the stuff from the Compilation.

    The Intermission story is also very nice albeit a bit short, but it clearly shows a few improvements certainly fruit of player feedback, especially regarding combat mechanics: Yuffie is a great character in this version of the game and she plays great, especially in Aerial Combat, a low point in the regular campaign, for sure. Pretty thrilled to see what they do for the other characters we’ll get to play in Rebirth and beyond, they’ll surely add even more layers to the already solid combat foundation.

    I am excited for Crisis Core Reunion, knowing that they’re intentionally remaking the visuals for that one, to make it more in line with Remake.

    Would give a 10 if the PC port wasn't as barebones, but it pretty much is a must play game for fans of VII as a whole.

    Its extremely formulaic, dull, repetitive corridor level design really does hurt the gameplay. Square Enix did not give enough thought in designing this game at all. And I can't say there's any difference with the amount of effort used in the writing either.

    FF7 Remake might as well be the best representation of a beautiful disappointment in the video game industry in recent time.

    The new combat is almost the same as on XV even with the annoying huge ass obtuse lock on crosshairs over the enemies even if you never use lock on, but a little less dumb, because you cant just use potions whenever you want which made you invincible. Its not bad but not great either, to do anything other than the basic attack you have to use the menu like on the old turn based game. The summons are companions, like on the horribly awful Final Fantasy XII, but like on the braindead FF XV you can only use then when the game allows it, this is one of the biggest differences from the original game.

    Characters will walk into each other, the world has no persistence at all(you kill a couple of monsters in a place, they evaporate, you walk 10 meters away and come back and they are there again), and the PC port is mediocre not even surporting ultrawide resolutions.

Expand

    Story;
    It's the exact same.

    Graphics;
    It's fine. Nothing I've haven't seen so far in the past 5-10 years.

    Execution;
    This will be a tad longer. First of all, the original did an exellent job of portraying everything. This remake is... going too far. What I mean by that? Infinite, impossible highway chases, boss fights, over the top maps, overcomplicated scenarios. If something was 10 minutes in the original, in this remake, it takes about 5 hours. At best. And while at the beginning it could be fun, it gets very, very, very, very slow and frustrating later down the road. After 20-30 hours, you realize; this is anything but FUN. You will realize; the devs and writers took the orignal material, dipped into shít sauce, and released into 3D madness. Sure, it's entertaining in the first 10 or 20 hours, but then, you get bored real quick. Why? Because all the extra content, all the extra difficulty; it doesn't belong in this game. This is NOT Final Fantasy VII. This is something far fetched, shítcoated, feces born remake of the original godlike game you used to love.

    Music: it's ok, they just remastered the original OST

    TLDR; don't buy it. It's not worth your time. Torrent it, if you are curious (like I did), but don't expect too much. The original did a 100% job, if you skip this, you lose NOTHING.

An action RPG which is a “remake” of the original Final Fantasy VII, interestingly, not only is it a genre shift from the first game, but the story itself diverges – and the divergence of the story is a major plot point. It expands on the Midgar section of the original game, a section of the game that took about 8 hours to beat, and turns it into a 40-60 hour long game, all while engaging in a few meta plot twists to keep players familiar with the game guessing how much things will change.

    Unfortunately, this is the heart of the problem of the game: they didn’t know what to expand on, so they expanded on EVERYTHING, even making up a few new sequences. This makes the good parts even bigger and even better, and results in a few new sequences (like a sequence with the Avalanche sidekicks, who were largely a side note in the original game) which really worked well, and added significant characterization – but the game also expanded on the bad parts, resulting in what were previously brief inter-area travel sequences or mini-dungeons becoming two hours long (or longer!) of endless corridors, and some added dungeons that weren’t even in the original game which added nothing to the game but length.

    At its best, it strikes an excellent balance between characterization and humor that was common in 1990s JRPGs, then sort of faded from view. At its worst, it is hours of slogging down corridors and fighting monsters that aren’t very challenging to fight, over and over again.

    The best part of this game is the improvements in characterization. Every single character is more interesting, including the random background Avalanche characters, the Shinra characters, and even the random side characters in the Wall Market. Barret in particular ends up with a sort of almost preacher-esque character, which is really fun to see – doubly so because for all of his bravado and being so big and bad, he’s clearly got issues underneath and is putting on a bit of a show. Tifa’s insecurity comes through much more strongly than it did in the original game, and Cloud ends up with significantly more characterization, being both uncertain and putting on a show of being a badass SOLDIER. Aerith’s personality, too, shines through, with her playful mischief being a major highlight – at least, until she ends up becoming the Cetra Waif, which makes her much less interesting and more subdued (and generic).

    This goes down to the background Avalanche members, who get a lot more characterization, and thus build more of a connection with the player, as well as the random people in Wall Market, including some new characters, including the sadistic masseuse Madam M, a bit character whose interactions with Cloud are absolutely hilarious.

    The introductory sequence, the added characterization for Avalanche members (including a whole chapter that is totally devoted to them), the Aerith meeting all the way through Wall Market, the battle up the pillar to try and defend Sector 7, going up the Shinra building, and the battles at the top of the tower – all of these sequences are improved over the original, and add new context and characterization.

    Unfortunately, this is a game with 18 chapters, and in the end, chapters 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, and 17 all contain very significant padding – meaning that over half the chapters in the game contain significant filler content. Worse, chapters 5, 6, 10, 11, 15, and 17 are basically entirely filler, with the only significant events occurring with the boss fights in them (and sometimes, not even then).

    This is a huge black mark on the game; it is the quality new story content that draws us in, but the vast amount of filler means that it ends up spaced out. Worse, it weakens the story very significantly; half of the game (chapters 5-7, 10 – 12, and 15-18) are all done under very significant time pressure, but each of these three sequences includes not one but *two* filler chapters, where you basically go through a “dungeon” that is just a bunch of corridors or pseudo-corridors. None of these are interesting, and they just bog down the progress of the game while robbing it of the sense of urgency that the pacing of these parts so desperately need.

    Perhaps the saving grace is that the combat of the game is pretty reasonable; while the normal encounters are mostly pretty easy, the game has a few sub-boss type enemies that help mix things up and provide more of a challenge.

    Still, overall, the game feels bloated. It's an improvement over the original overall, but sacrifices pacing in a very real way.

    Overall, it's worth playing if you are a FF7 fan, or are really into action RPGs, but if you aren't a huge fan of those kinds of games, this isn't something you need to go out of your way to experience.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After waiting decades, it's finally here, and it's pretty bad. All they had to do was remake the original with a few bells and whistles and that was it. Instead, they decided to turn the game into Kingdom Hearts.

    You can imagine the scene in the board room: "FF7 can be so much more than this!"
    The problem is that their writers are only capable of one kind of story: a Disney story. Fate vs freedom, light vs darkness - FF7 had elements of this but they take it way overboard into the most absurd territory, like there being physical manifestations of 'fate' that you fight. It's dumb. The original was so much more low key and interesting because of that. The truth is that the current writers can't make a story as good as FF7, or 8, or anything. All they can do is write this bottom of the barrel hack stuff about light and truth and hope and stuff. And because people continue to pick the games up with their pretty graphics, they delude themselves into believing they are talented and insightful writers. How long will their schtick last? Please not much longer. Really, who in their right mind would look decide the best route for the remake would be to 'correct' the bad things that happen in the original? I can't imagine what was going through their heads. The story is definitely the worst part of the game.

    The gameplay is just garbage. Spam spam spam, potion, repeat x100000 until game is finished. Same as FFVX. What is wrong with relaxed, turn-based combat? Or, if you're going to do action combat, can dodging and blocking actually be reliable? No. They made a system which is somehow at the same time fast-paced but totally unsatisfying and boring. I'm certain almost no one enjoys this battle system, even those who otherwise like the game

    The characters have been 'tuned' as well. Cloud is now Squall. Barret is now comic relief (he was funny in the original sometimes but it was unintentional). They tried to flesh out Jessie and Wedge which was nice I suppose, although Wedge ended up just being Homer Simpson. That's not what this game needed.

    The music was sound when it was based on the original's OST. Every other track was just forgettable electronic noise. Disappointing. They had a whole OST there just ready to go and they had to add loads of **** to it. Why?

    And the second worst aspect of this game: the padding. In the original game, Midgar lasts, what, 10 hours? They make Midgar last -the entire game-. It has to because this type of game costs so much to make. It has to look good, because nowadays that is basically the series' main selling point. But because it is so expensive to produce, they have to use what they do produce as much as possible. This means sending you back to the same dungeons, the same towns, to talk to the same people and fight the same monsters, again and again. That's not fun. And even if you avoid the (many) optional sidequests that they push you to do, you still have to return eventually because the story routes you back there.

    It's also sad how they handled Sephiroth. They knew that if they went this route of dragging the story out, there would be no way to build up the tension between Cloud and Sephiroth. In the original, it's a slow process of learning about Sephiroth and his relationship to Cloud, his plan, and so forth. You basically don't know **** about him for a long time. That's no good for this game. By dragging out the pacing, they've had to artificially speed up the development of Sephiroth into antagonist. Towards the end they just shove him in your face, and you base your knowledge of him on a few quick cutscenes. In the original there are many long bits of exposition about Sephiroth. And it's only after a LOT of that that any real confrontation even happens with him. And that's why he is one of the most memorable villains. In this one, they rush the exposition and force you to fight him early - they ruin his character totally.

    Lastly, the graphics, although they're nice (Tifa looks good) - they're just the wrong style for a fantasy JRPG. They've been doing this since Advent Children. It should be more cartoony. It's easier and cheaper to make and suits the game more.
    Also, the art direction is bad. Why the hell is Midgar so bright and chirpy? In the original it is dark and dingy. There is little/no natural light. In this one there are plants, flowers, kids laughing, and everything is basking in the morning sun. Blue skies, clouds, birds. It is everything Midgar should not be. It was a dark dirty slum with only artificial light. Shop signs, lamps, yellow artificial light. You feel the bad conditions of the people living there, making Shinra all the more selfish and villainous - the old art direction actually drove the story in this way. Now they've done a complete 180. Why? I guess so people can see the pretty 3D models they made. Unbelievable.

    The only plus side is occasional pleasant sparks of nostalgia. That's really all it gives, and rarely at that.

Yes my heart aches for these works of fiction, because their real to me and I appreciate the current, past and present team at Square for all their tremendous effort at making me feel something in this world that couldn't be felt elsewhere. I see your plot and decrypt your encoding with the cypher that is my psyche. I never write reviews, mainly because I think opinions are placated with self pride and jaded adultery, but I wanted to pour my thirty-two year old man heart into this right after finishing the main story of Midgar for myself, while the wounds were still fresh.

    I've never played the original Final Fantasy VII, but I had friends who did talking me through the plot differences as I played.
    I think it's incredible for such a classic JRPG to be given to a team to remake from the ground up into a semi-open world action adventure RPG. Normally I'm not a fan of companies iterating on old content instead of making new things, but I think the way It hews closely enough to the original to still get its message across while shaking things up in ways that are really interesting adds so much artistic value beyond just being a simple HD remake.

    In addition to the story, exploring the overworld was an artful mix of cinematic moments (most of which seem to be done in-engine extremely well rather than through pre-rendered video, which kept me from thinking 'ugh, another cutscene' the way I have in other cinematic games), relatively linear dungeonesque areas with item chests and sometimes occasional optional objectives hidden along the way, and semi-open exploration segments offering side quests and other points of interest. There were a couple of moments where I got a little tired of the dungeonesque areas going on for so long, but I think the game designers had a good handle on when to wrap them up and give you a break. All in all, traversing the game world was also an enjoyable part of playing the game. My only note is that the Chocobo transport system, which lets you fast travel, probably should've been introduced earlier on in the game. I know FF7R only covers a small portion of the original FF7, and the point at which Chocobos were introduced in FF7R is likely pretty faithful to FF7, but it was a little weird only unlocking fast travel at around the 35 hour mark of a game I spent 42 hours on, because you're not in Chocobo-accessible territory for very long after they become available to you. Running from place to place didn't take all that long, though, so no big deal.

    The battles were really fun and just the right level of challenging for me on normal difficulty in classic mode, where the characters automatically do basic actions (attacking, guarding, dodging) and you choose the abilities/spells/summons/items to spend your Active Time Battle meter on. I found the AI did a good job automatically controlling the characters for me, but classic mode doesn't prevent you from actively controlling the characters if you feel like you can do better! That was a really smart decision, because I enjoyed battling so much I controlled the characters more than the AI did. Any time I did poorly in a battle, the game made it easy to intuit what I had done wrong (typically I didn't exploit an elemental weakness, tried to dodge attacks meant to be blocked, or attacked enemies while they were set up to counter) and if there was ever any doubt, I could just use the Assess ability you can equip early on in the game to bring up enemy info, including weaknesses/resistances and sometimes tactical tips.
    I never felt under leveled, and I didn't go out of my way to grind for experience, either, which means the game designers did a great job in my opinion!

    I know there have been some complaints from content creators about the PC port being poorly optimized/ported, so here's my experience! I had very few issues with the graphics performance: I dropped the shadows from high to low, which allowed me to increase the FPS from 30 to a steady 60, and that was the only graphics setting I changed. The game is gorgeous and changing the shadow quality wasn't noticeable to me at all -- even turned down they still looked great -- so I wasn't missing out.
    There were extremely rare cases of stuttering, but when the game is 30 to 60 hours long (my first play through took 42 hours), a couple seconds' worth of frame skips is totally forgettable.
    I played on keyboard and mouse instead of with a controller, and I believe the default key binds here are definitely the weakest part of the port. Keyboard and mouse are almost certainly not the ideal way to play the game, but I made it through alright. The only real issue was the key mapping in the motorcycle battle segments which caused me to lose a couple of times when I probably could've first-tried them using a controller.

    Honestly, the game is incredible, and whether it gets a sequel or not (take your time Square Enix) I'm immensely satisfied with the experience! It's not just one of my favorite games of 2021, I honestly think it's one of my favorite games of all-time.

    (Update: After updating my NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER's drivers, NVIDIA GeForce Experience insisted I could run the game with everything set to the highest settings at 1080p and 60 FPS. Bumping the shadows back up, given they were the only thing I had turned down, once again made stuttering occur more frequently for me, so I feel even more confident now in saying that turning shadows down may help improve performance tremendously with no noticeable impact on how nice the game looks

    The PC version already has the improved textures from the PS5 version, but sometimes you'll just notice crappy textures, environments or NPCs that haven’t fully loaded yet, and of course image tearing in some not-so-frequent moments. The PC version is good, but personally I'd reach for the PS5 version which just runs smoother. [Issue#317]

    FF7R is a fantastic reimaging of the iconic title. Refusing to classify itself as a nostalgia act, it expands upon the original narrative in new and exciting ways. The combat system has a seamless fluidity to it, allowing for engaging and entertaining gameplay sequences. Artistically, FF7R retains the level of quality players have come to expect from Square Enix, but it does falter ever so slightly in some environments. The updated rendition of the classic OST is outstanding from start to finish, with the sound design team matching it in every regard.

    Final Fantasy VII Remake is a visual marvel, and the environment focussed story is perhaps more relevant now than ever. The slick gameplay and new story twists make the game worth playing even for old school fans. The game does overstay its welcome, however. And the sidequests are a bit bland. Luckily, the Intergrade chapter largely fixes these complaints. If Square Enix stays that course, then Rebirth promises to be great.
