the only negative aspect of this game is; it is too short for a rpg this good in every way possible (about 20 hours). thank god there is a fallout 2 which lasts more than 60 hours, and has an infinite amount of replayibility.

The isometric, real time and turn based combat gameplay works perfectly. My only main gripe is the lack of companion controls. Meaning I can't have companions hold excess loot without having to sell to them and having to buy it back.

Regardless, Fallout stands as the best Fallout as it has the best written story, atmosphere and game world.

I grew up playing this fantastic turn-based RPG game, i loved it then, I still love It now.

although I could never remember what to do/where to go as a child I can return to it and finish it in a few days if i perch myself on my chair like an eagle.

Well done, well designed, Game of the Year forever in my heart.

Fallout an all time RPG-game. The series that made me start it so many times and hardly ever finishing it. Good story, great characters, brilliant hypnotizing soundtrack, the atmosphere that no 3D game can hardly cover. The all time classic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is good to say that this isn't the chapter, in Fallout serie, with which I began my ascent into this fantastic and unique world. In fact I fell in love with Fallout 3, and only then I discovered the previous chapters. But let's talk about Fallout, and not Fallout 3. I played the first chapter of Fallout already years ago, but I hadn't the ability to finish a game like that. Too complex, too difficult. Then recently I wanted to start again with a view to the release of Fallout 4, and then I re-started the first adventure in the Wastelands.

Fallout's plot is simply fantastic and exciting. The historical background of retro-futuristic 21st century, 2077's Great War and the rest, is structured and interesting, full of meaning. It starts with a simple but dangerous mission, then move on to decide the fate of an entire area. It thus comes as something that concerns only Vault 13 and a small group of people, up to face a threat of extraordinary proportions. The Master: simply one of the best bosses and villains in gaming history. His story, his vision of a new world, through "The Unity" and transformation of men into supermutants, where differences fade and catalyze as a genetic destiny that allows them to survive in the Wastelands. A real evolution and revolution. Not just religious fanaticism, hope and peace in a rotten and sick world. Just think about christian's missionary missions in the Americas in the past, and recently in Africa. Bring a new religion, helping people, professing love and peace. This is the way The Master brings people to his future vision of the world using his disciples, the Children of the Cathedral, hiding of course all negaive things that follow. The Master, however, has miscalculated: thinking so much of humans' evolution, he forgot strong viruses' evolution; VEF virus that has mutated making his plan useless, all his work wasted, simply making mutants unable to reproduce. Just poetic. And what the Vault Dweller has faced for his people, for the salvation of an entire generation is simply amazing. Compared to other RPGs, Fallout's character does not have a "real personality", but his actions, the facts, the events speak for him. And even after facing hell in person and have sacrificed everything, he has been kicked out of the house for which he fought, and that he always protected. Not a word. Not a gesture. He took his responsibilities and just... went away. Sad but great scene when Vault Dweller moves away into the desert, leaving the world behind him, with the song "Maybe".

Fallout's gameplay is hard to define: definitely the same gameplay of classic RPGs, but showed some characteristics that made it unique and so loved... or hated. Personally, I liked the gameplay: skill points and how they weigh on the development of the character is real, tangible and simply extraordinary. The turn-based combat is great, never boring, and well balanced in difficulty. Perhaps there was an abuse of "action points" concept: spend 1 AP only to open inventory, it seems a bit excessive. You can have companions, but you have to care about them cause they can die and running out of ammo. The trading system is just perfect, since it can operate both in terms of barter or using the currency of the game, bottlecaps, to trade stimpaks, weapons, armor and ammunition. However traders don't have a respawn of goods, and doesn't make sense, because the economy of the game is undermined, because you aren't able to obtain constant supplies of material to continue the adventure. The map is very big, and travel is realistic because a trip may take days (in-game, of course) to arrive at a given destination. Moreover, even if the map is quite large, it is clear how only 12 predefined locations are really detailed, important and interesting to visit. The level of gore and violence in the game is simply raw, realistic and delicious. Only real flaw in this game, but very heavy, is the timer to complete the first part of the main quest. The game is already very complex on its own, and people to talk to or objects to be recovered are not easy to find, but with the timer about 150 days to find the water-chip, the game forces the player to a senseless hurry, avoiding beautiful side quests for fear of running out of time, leading to the game over. Simply exaggerated, it is to admit it. This "defect" definitely alienated many people from the game, including myself, the first time I played it.

The graphics in isometric view is fascinating and well crafted, the creation of steampunk and retro-futuristic world is artistically stunning and work perfectly. Also the realization of post-nuclear world's context is made very well. The soundtrack is good, well focused in places and events, and some tracks are disturbing.

Fallout is symbol of quality obtainable only from classic RPGs. Hard to play, but it will worth it; Fallout has its flaws, and not by a little, but is still definitely an undisputed masterpiece of videogames.

It's going to be jarring to play this game coming from the 3D sequels what with the lack of explanations for the mechanics and skill checks at every turn ala pen and paper RPGs but if you take the time to learn all of its intricacies and having the mindset to play a game like this, you'll be rewarded with a one-of-a-kind experience that only old school RPGs could offer.

World War III lies decades in the past. In Fallout, your choices have consequences and your character is what you make of him or her, not just a race/class combination. Couple that with a believable antagonist (in the context of the game), B-movie shlock monsters like super mutants, radscorpions and deathclaws, over the top death animations, the dark humorous contrast between the blind pre-war optimism and the current post-war state of affairs, a 50's retro-futuristic aesthetic as well as a moody soundtrack by Mark Morgan, and you get one hell of a game. Combat is devoid of challenge but entertaining, in no small part thanks to the death animations.

Compared to its direct sequel, Fallout is shorter but has a more tightly focused plot and atmosphere. It also features fewer pop-culture references and easter eggs. Finally, I love the ending slides narrating the impact of your journey on the people you've met and places you've visited. Fallout is good stuff.

The game balance is reasonable and there are many ways to solve quests. To this end it has done a much better job even than some of the latest great title. Consider the graphics presentation could be offered by the hardware back in that age, this level of creativity could have created a much better market nowadays. Do check out the fallout bible created by fans.

One last thing, I knew of lots of old folks think that the 3rd installment killed the series, but oddly this is one of the few series that I think it successfully crossed the gap of the technology advancement and go on.

But I liked the endings (multiple decisions - storm, hack or convince). Back then I didn't care and tried to kill everything that moves or attacks me. Unfortunately, the game had a bug with the computer in the Mariposa base. So, I finished the game several times later.

From the 1997-98 perspective, the game is just awesome and super interesting. It is simplified compared to Baldur's Gate but more convenient and flexible. The only problem was missing the shots (DND legacy). So, you really need to think about how to build a char.

    Pros.:
    - Awesome setting.
    - Variety of choices (even though, they are simple).
    - SPECIAL system.
    - Endings. Affect of your actions.
    - Weaponary. Always liked the animation of extermination.
    - A lot of popular culture references (X-Files, Doctor Who, etc., even reference to Richard 'Levelord' Gray).

    Cons.:
    - Missing shots while 95%.
    - The game is SUPER short. A lot of cut content. And you can feel it.
    - SEVERE underdevelopment of quests. Even with the Fix patch you still feel that something is missing. It's obvious a lot of content went to Fallout 2.

    Eh... Good old days...

Hello everyone, I am the Vault-dwelling Gordoth Enodious, a guy who likes clean water, and today I’m talking about the dangers of Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game (dubbed simply Fallout from this point on).
Simple review details - metacritic does not like long reviews so check out my tumblr/patreon (gemsimov) for a complete review.

    Gameplay
Fallout is a top down, isometric roleplaying game from a few years ago. It is played, almost entirely, through the use of the mouse, although there are some hotkeys that can be utilized for max efficiency… Even if efficiency is achieved by other means.
The game makes use of chance as a defining factor for how situations are resolved, but that does not truly get in the way of enjoyment derived from it. In fact, although chance seemingly affects all interactions the player has with the world of Fallout, it is not so. Chance affects the outcomes of situations, but is not the end-all be-all of the solution. A situation that was going to go badly for the player has an incredibly small chance of going well for them, and the other variables are based on how badly the situation will go - it could be nasty, or it could be horrible.
Chance in Fallout is an additive, rather than a multiplicative. Of course, some mechanics are affected by chance at a greater rate than others, but the fact of the matter is that chance does not appear to be as prevalent as one might think it were, initially. That makes the allocation of Skill Points and Stat Points actually mean something.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, a roleplaying game has both Skill Points and Stat Points. One would have thought that these did not actually exist, for many a game claiming to be roleplaying games in current times are lacking some of these.
At the start of the game the player has a number of points to allocate to their Stats, making their character unique, in the sense that these Stats are not going to be increased by more than 2, even if the player did everything in their power to do so. That means there is a very defining, important decision to be made, right at the start of the game, because these Stats define how easy it is for one’s character to do everything.
The character will be better at doing some things than doing others. That makes the character appear somewhat grounded in reality. As in, ladies and gentlemen, the character might even have a flaw! Imagine that, a character who is not the most amazing thing to have ever existed! And having flaws makes characters interesting, even if they have no history of their own, for their failings become a juxtaposition for their successes, and the game becomes more entertaining.
A game that is close to 25 years old, but has so much good in it that it still dwarfs the biggest games of modern gaming, is bound to be good, and to have something stellar to itself. Alas, its age is also prone to making it find itself stumbling through territories that were not nearly as well charted as they are now. More on tumblr/patreon 2/3

    Presentation
Fallout is a game about a world that is so vastly different from what humanity is used to that it is, essentially, a brand new world. How, then, does Fallout bring that world to life?
Fallout, in all its glory, has voice acting for EVERY important character… And the voice acting is spectacular. The actors have all done an amazing job bringing these people to life, and even if some sound strange or uncanny, they still fit in this bizarre world that has come about after a nuclear apocalypse.
But it is not only Talking Heads that look good. The world itself, having been granted a detailed and rich coat of muted colors, still retains an appearance that makes one think of how well crafted it is, even after all those years. The work put into the creation of the unique visuals, which fit so well with the setting, has, no doubt, been a great effort, and it shows.
What, then, can one say about the SOUND of Fallout? Well, one only needs to listen to a single piece of the soundtrack, and they will find themselves IN this dying, almost wholly dead, world. The music by Mark Morgan is stupefying, and borders on genius in its quality.
The sound effects are a little unbalanced in their fidelity, some are too loud, others are a bit quiet, some sound strange, others sound just right. More on tumblr/patreon 3/3

It's a pretty fun game but it's ruined by it's lack of replayability value. I had more fun in this game just exploring instead of fighting, as it got long, tedious, and usually ended up with me dieing (maybe I just suck at this game). Fallout was just a marvel and I loved it to bits. I was also utterly surprised that Kevin Bacon's voice was in it (check the credits, he's there.) Overall: This is the game that changed the face of western RPGs forever, while it is a little rough around the edges, even at the time, it still is a great game, worthy of respect! Expand

Mechanics and gameplay is just the same like in F2 with some minor difference. Maybe it's not like the open world games of today but at the time this was and open world to explore. Vaults, Cities and mutant to kill!

Nearly a century later your character, in living in a secret underground Vault, a long term fallout shelter designed to protect people from the atomic devastation. Your character is then tasked with finding a new waterchip for the vault as the old one broke and the Vault can no longer purify it's own water. So you are sent naive out into the world in search of this necessary component. You'll quest the wastes in your search picking up clues along the way, then return the working chip to the vault. Over this quest a second far more dangerous threat will show it self, a threat which you alone must deal with.

The good: Graphically the game looks fantastic even today because of it's advanced 2D engine. With Ron Perlman narrating the beginning and end, along with other voice actors voicing key characters, not to mention great ambient music. The game still sounds fantastic, even the gunshots sound great still. With many characters whom you may fall in love with, or loathe with every fiber of your being, the development of the story is fantastic. The story it self is tied into tons of small experiences that make this game shine still from a narrative standpoint in ways most modern titles can't match. The turn based combat is a fine system that allows you to form strategies at your own pace, though computer turns can take a while. There are plenty of weapons, starting simple and getting bigger and more powerful as you go. When you get your first laser or plasma gun it feels like a real accomplishment. Same goes for armor with your first power armor making you feel neigh invincible. The game is full of adult and dark humor that's good enough to illicit a chuckle from even the most jaded cynic.

The bad: Due to the isometric boards being seen from only one view point somethings can be difficult to reach and enemies may die in places you can't loot them in. Also the game lacks in the fact it uses a hexagon layout on the isometric boards. Looting enemies can be a chore because you have to take each item, or item stack individually. Another note is that if two enemies fall in the same hex you'll only be able to loot one of them. A final issue is that the counter for item movement maxes out at 999, this can make transferring large numbers of bottle caps(the ingame currency) a bit of a chore, also the counter moves slowly if you're not moving a few or a lot of caps all at once.

Final note: While not perfect this game is a legend in it's own right, and Black Isle made one hell of a game out of it. With it available on Steam and Good Old Games packaged with it's sequel and Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel it's well worth picking up.

Hauntingly Beautiful. It makes me really feel isolated and alone even with every companion. Perfect for the setting

    Story:
The main story is rather dull but the games writers give a lot of character to the world so I am invested into the struggle of Vault 13.

I'll start by saying the story and the world of Fallout 1 were incredibly captivating. It was really thought provoking, and it depicts a post nuclear world so authentic to the point it leaves uncomfortable feelings. Do you like games where you can immerse yourself in the story, and your decisions have an impact? Look no further.

If you're interested in the Fallout Franchise this is the perfect place to start, if you have some tolerance for older games.

[STORY]: As mentioned above, this game has one of the best stories I've experienced, you'll be finding yourself searching the wiki and diving deeper into the lore. Different playthroughs can differ from each other, whether you are skilled in Speech or have high Intelligence decides a lot this game. The storytelling is awesome as you start with one important main quest, and during the course of solving this problem, you get more and more information about a far greater threat. Almost every dialogue has a lot of options to choose from and makes it easy to really play your role, it just feels so alive even If this is such an old game.

    [GAMEPLAY]:
Very simple, point and click to navigate everything, but it takes some time getting used to it. Combat is turn based, and half of the fights can be really tough, where you really have to stop and plan every Action Point you spend this round. It's tough because you are not stronger than another beings with comparable gear. Every fight can be really close until you get better gear. So in the early game it was really hard to survive, but once you acquire some of the best weapons you really begin dominating and this change is really rewarding and satisfying.
Investing Skillpoints in: Lockpick, Repair, Science, Speech and Sneak has a great impact on your game and will change your solution to every quest. This feels so huge. Be really careful talking to NPC's because everything you say could change a lot in your playthrough.
Have you threatened someone in the Hub's Downtown? You may need help from this person later on, and you may regret it.
There are a lot of outcomes to every problem and situation and it's fascinating and entertaining to think about.

There are some cons of course:
    - you have to save a lot, there are gamebreaking bugs and you're likely to encounter them.
    - you could play it without a guide, and it may be the most interesting riddle to solve ever, but I believe this will take too much time, I recommend a guide when stuck!
    - the story is so good and big, but the ending came kinda abruptly for me
    - it takes time to get into the groove of this game since inventory management, bartering and movement is bit outdated but when it clicks, it's quite good!

    TLDR;
If you're a fan of cRPGs, this is for you. Fallout 1 has a captivating story and thought-provoking world-building. The gameplay is simple but challenging, and the choices you make have a real impact on the game world. It is a bit dated, and it is a bit of a slow burn, but it's worth sticking with. The story gets better and better as you play, If you can get past the graphics and the bugs, you'll find a rewarding experience.

    ODGRYWANIE BOHATERA

Prior to attacking the military installation with the aid of the brotherhood of steel, my game started crashing frequently and at random. It seemed like all of my five saves had a similar issue, so I was unable to complete the game legitimately. I started cheating because I spent so much time on the game and I just wanted to see it through. I would rate the game as good but not great because it’s hardly a masterpiece with all the bugs (I even had the unofficial patches installed).

It’s most definitely a good game, and I think it still holds up even to this day. I don’t have nostalgia to go on, and I wouldn’t hesitate to say that it could be an 8 or a 9 if my game would stop crashing.

Despite its age, Fallout 1 is still a very enjoyable experience, slightly spoiled by a few bad design choices. The worst being the time limit to complete the main mission that discourages exploration, and a lack of a good quest system.
Despite its excellent writing, I also found the story to be a bit cheesy, but still a lot better than Fallout 3's story.

I gave it a 6 not just because of the bugs, but because the game was lacking in a lot of ways. Since I played it many times I've been everywhere and now, done everything except for the cathedral, and I've got to say it's not even close to how great I thought it would be. I thought it would have powerful storylines actually shaped by the players events since at the beginning it gives that illusion. Sadly, as the game went on and neared the end things just went down hill. (SPOILERS) I did the whole side story of helping the Blades in the Boneyard defeat the Regulators after I was lucky enough to find the alien gun somewhere. When I finished, nothing changed. Some npcs died but no one reacted any different. In fact the only thing that really changed was the Gun Runners, after killing off the deathclaws they gave me better deals at there store. (/Spoilers) So the most interesting change the player could ever do in this game (besides progress to the "end" of the game, was to get better deals from some merchant? I expected much better from the supposed "Best RPG of all time". Now for all I know it was just bugs, since closely after that bugs just broke the game. I finished the quest with the brotherhood and gained access and then talked to the elders. (Spoilers) I scouted the military base out, then came back. And this is where the game hit rock bottom... They told me to go to the base and get inside. So I did, and to my surprise the soliders they sent with me didn't come in with me, so I had to fight an entire base of mutants by myself. So I did, and when I got to the end I killed the boss and left. But no one back at the brother hood says anything new to me, they don't say "Good job, here's your power armor" nothing. (/spoilers) So I'm left with nothing, no where to go, nothing to do. Besides some major bugs the game is still pretty mediocre. I had thought the story and player interaction in shaping the world was the best feature of the game, so I never minded the subpar combat, the linear dialogue or the failed attempt at what Deus Ex did so well, CHOICE. In Deus Ex you never have to fight, you can hack, lockpick and sneak your way to the end of levels, but Fallout forces you into every role. And if you can't fight then your screwed. If I never found the secret alien gun then I probably would not have gotten very far, since deathclaws were near impossible without it. Expand

I found the combat kind of boring, and I always hate it when games put a time limit on you. It's sometimes excusable when its just for a small part of a game, but when the entire game is under one big time limit? No thanks.

This game started one of the most iconic game-franchises of all time but it doesn't mean it's perfect, in fact I think this game aged VERY poorly.

I understand that when this game was released it must have been a watershed but I will do my analysis based on my experience in 2022 thinking about who like me wants to start in the saga.

The graphics are an obstacle, because in addition to the character model being dated, the scenarios make it difficult to experience, because many things are hidden, not because they are a secret, but because the low quality prevents you from finding the item, characters, and objectives. Many times I looked on the internet where a character was, and in fact he was "hidden" on the inside of the wall that didn't show.

The gameplay is interesting with an action point counter in battles and MANY different ways to assemble the character, avoiding the obvious melee and range, but being able to make stupid characters which completely changes the interactions.
In addition, your choices directly interfere with almost everything in the game, from killing everything and everyone to not killing anyone. This freedom is very impressive.
The backstory is interesting, but the protagonist's is very superficial. But the way it happens without directing it in an obvious way is pretty fun.
I had a few visual bugs here and there, but nothing major.
I recommend it for those who have an open mind for dated systems and old graphics, to be able to know the saga as a whole, even more so because it is possible to buy it almost for free.

Miss, miss, miss, miss, miss, miss and **** MISS! This game would be fun if my character wouldn't miss every single shot! It just makes every encounter very boring and of course enemies do critical SHOT wow! TRICK SHOT OOOOO! shots to me so just because of that I give this game 5/10. Bad game.

The is a game that gets old very fast. The environment is incredible, until you realize it is comprised of about 10 different models, and it suddenly becomes dull and repetitive. A similar thing happens with combat. It is indeed Oblivion with guns, and no, that is in no way a good thing.

This classic favourite of many RPG players is rife with flaws that, obviously, most people don't care for, but this self-proclaimed discerning veteran will give you a tour of some major ones.

At first, you'll discover a good, simple character creation process with promises of variety. Equally good is the fact that random encounters are not necessarily hostile. You will, however, spend hours and hours killing rats.

Then the horror: the game runs on a timer. Indeed, Fallout is the Anti-Grail of the exploring gamer. No, just no.

Graphics are lacking. Not ugly or anything, but the isometric view is opaque; walls block you view, hiding creatures and objects. And the cursor itself is unpleasant to play with.

Finally, to keep it short, here is a little example showing how variety was expected but not delivered: In 2 days of playing, I managed to make use of 3 skills, 2 of which being combat skills. There was nothing to lockpick, nothing to learn with the Sciences skill, nothing to repair... You get the idea.

Now go and make up your own opinion, but don't expect the perfection promised by all these 10/10 ratings.

I have the second highest rated video card in my computer and every time I turn around in this game, it crashes. That is ridiculous. I wish I had never bought this game. Granted, the scenery is beautiful and the plot is fantastic. But, I can't continue the game if I'm not allowed to go where the quest leads me. Fix this.

While the game has an interesting premise, Interplay, as evident by its later work has managed to screw up one of the best ideas in video game history. Thank God someone else bought the franchise.

I honestly can not see what people like in this game. Its turn-based combat is absolutely wretched and the RP choices in this game are pitiful to say the least. Go play Betrayal at Kondor if you want a good RPG. I could maybe see this being fun when I was 10 for the goofy violence, but any adult that plays this game will surely see how terrible this game really is.

A decent RPG where you can indeed actually advance your character and choose one of many paths through the story.(no)

The mood is right, the graphics good, and the plot compelling. I found the tactical combat system refreshingly intelligent, and the multitude of ways you can approach the game from a stats point of make a wide variety of styles possible in the game.

This sequel to an all-time classic is one of the standout RPGs for the 1990s. [Jan 1998, p.221]
  3. Fallout's detailed graphics, compelling plot, and intuitive gameplay should deservedly broaden its appeal beyond the hard-core role-playing game audience. Put simply, Fallout may be the best role-playing game to be released in years.
