    User Score, Y U are so low? Fallout is greatest CRPG ever. You can play it for 500 hours and still discover new things (like i did). Amazing storyline, amazing characters, amazing gameplay!

    The greatest Computer Role-Playing Game, in my opinion. It mixes a great atmosphere with awesome stat building, story, role-playing and character design. The creators of this went on to make Arcanum (Fallout 2 was by a different team) so if you liked Fallout (the first one) you will probably like Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura too. I highly recommend this game if you like Western RPGs.

    This game is extremely fun. Who cares how old it is or the graphics. This is the game that started it all. This is Fallout, a game where you control your destiny through epic quests, allies, and weapons.

    I remember booting up the old pentium 200mhz rig and playing this for days on end as a kid. This game brought the RPG genre out of the dungeons and into the wastes. There was nothing like it back then. Dunno if kids these days would appreciate it just because the graphics are very dated. But if you can see past that a very enjoyable game awaits! 10/10.

It came as close as possible to being a pen-and-paper experience - with the ability to craft your own character the way you *want*, without choices being forced on the player.     This is a really good game, a beginning to the best post-apocalyptic series out there. I can't complain about the graphics, this is indeed a good game. Combat is ok, and exploring the wasteland is pretty cool.

    This game was awesome when it came out in 1997, although only 2D it felt like playing a comic book. The combat system was great too, so good it's survived and made it into Fallout 3. The story was also great, and wandering the world was fun,

    One of the absolute all time classic RPGs. Fallout had a shape all of its own with a great system, characters, idea and story. Fantastic old school top down RPG, if not THE best.

    I'm still a bigger fan of Fallout 2, but this one is its predecessor so I understand that my favorite game won't be without the first part and so I love it too. The game is poorly balanced, buggy, but it has that unique atmosphere, multiple ways of quest solving, memorable characters and locations, great story, nice roleplay system (though most of the skills are useless).     P.S. Half of the negative reviews contain the comparison to Oblivion. So I make the conclusion that the people who wrote them didn't even knew that they were playing Fallout 3, not the original. And it's kinda sad.    … Expand

    War, war never changes! Excellent retro classic and one of the best cRPGs of all time, immensely influential game that aged very well and is a joy to play even today. Yes, there are a few shortcomings with companion control, few bugs, absence of a proper active quest journal, but other than that this is the ultimate masterpiece. Story, the humor, leveling up and perks, the atmosphere andWar, war never changes!     Being a huge fan of Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas I thought I would play the first game. It was very different from the other two but is still an amazing game even when it was made. If you love Fallout try Fallout 1. Fallout 9.4/10

    the only negative aspect of this game is; it is too short for a rpg this good in every way possible (about 20 hours). thank god there is a fallout 2 which lasts more than 60 hours, and has an infinite amount of replayibility.

    This game has too many strong qualities to adequately list them all. Atmospheric, darkly humorous, with memorable characters, meaty RPG elements, and possibly the best and most satisfying videogame ending of all time. Sixteen years on, the original Fallout remains the best entry in the franchise. No subsequent entry has been able to adequately reproduce the magic or improve the formula.

    OH MY GOD. How can anyone dislike this game? If your PC bugs out then get rid of your friggin viruses. No replay value? If you don't change the way you play it, then I guess it could seem so.
    This is a top cult classic game, which rocks the socks out of any other game ever made. PERIOD.
    I'd bet the reason "new kids" won't appreciate it is because they have no patience these days.

Let your imagination strike and think about how the characters look like! Some of them have voice acting, some don't. The facial animations aren't actually animations so whatever. The storyline is the most interesting (in the point of Intellectual storyline) after Half Life Trilogy. The Great War being placed into a long timespan dating from 2030s to 2077 when the nuclear bombs started replacing the rain from the clouds. You can see, everything looks like 1960s for a reason. It's then when this thing almost happened the same back then! But didn't, which in Fallout did. The soundtrack gave the atmosphere plus points and it's great. The gameplay is awesome, based on strategy combat.
    So this game marked my childhood - as everyones'. Some may agree, some may don't.    … Expand

The game characters also have some good quotes. This game you can play over and over again and never get bored. There is so much freedom in this game.     News of Fallout 3 caused me to reload the original Fallout--it's 10 years old and still a blast to play! Sure the graphics are dated, but the replayability of this game still impresses after all this time.

It pains me to see how recent gamers hold this up to Oblivion. That's almost criminal.     The isometric, real time and turn based combat gameplay works perfectly. My only main gripe is the lack of companion controls. Meaning I can't have companions hold excess loot without having to sell to them and having to buy it back.

    This game is wonderfull and full of suprises.It has his own unique character that will let you escape from the usual boring medieval games.It has humor without being ridiculus.And when you use your weapons to destroy someone you feel a very satisfying bloodthirsty ecstasy.Ah and it is one of the best games ever made.

    Such a solid game, no matter if you play it in 1997, 2008, 2018 or 2048. The atmosphere is great, gameplay is solid, characters, sound, missions are all great. The only problem I've encountered while playing was that my companion sometimes blocked me in tight places even if I chose the greater distance option. Still, great game and now I'm moving on to replay Fallout 2. Pickens approves!

    Simply a great game. All other games have difficulty reaching the story line of Fallout and Fallout 2. I only hope Fallout 3 will continue the legacy.

    Been on a retro trip lately and Fallout is well worthy of playing. A lot of fun with some nicely dark humour and plenty of player freedom. I found the graphics acceptable but did find it a little buggy as I had a repeated crash on the same part quite near the end and some of the fights can be horrendously unfair as you can sometimes be killed unexpectedly by single critical hits. However, Been on a retro trip lately and Fallout is well worthy of playing. A lot of fun with some nicely dark humour and plenty of player freedom. I found the graphics acceptable but did find it a little buggy as I had a repeated crash on the same part quite near the end and some of the fights can be horrendously unfair as you can sometimes be killed unexpectedly by single critical hits. However, as long as you save regularly, this isn't much of a problem and doesn't spoil a classic RPG/adventure. It really gives me high hopes for Fallout 3 as I hope Bethesda will make a post-apocalyptic Oblivion.… Expand

    I grew up playing this fantastic turn-based RPG game, i loved it then, I still love It now.

    although I could never remember what to do/where to go as a child I can return to it and finish it in a few days if i perch myself on my chair like an eagle.

    Well done, well designed, Game of the Year forever in my heart.

    I recently finish playing fallout 1 once again after ~8 years of break and it still excellent game. For the first time I've tried finishing it using a character fighting only with unarmed weapons and that gave me new refreshing experience. I gave it 9/10 only because I find it little to short and for really poor companions management and lack of their story.     Simply one of the most entertaining RPG's every produced. Also, it had one of the greatest opening movies, featuring an old grainy newsreel style report being shown on a black and white TV set. Very creepy post nuclear holocaust RPG that stills holds its own.

    Just the utterance of Black Isle's game Fallout leaves me breathless - this was one of the most monumental games in all of RPG history, with superior character development, limitless freedom, impressive graphics at its time, and such an enjoyable game that it has been observed that this game actually rises in value as times goes on.

    What the developer attempted here has yet to even be glimpsed at since. And it certainly looks like Fallout 3 (different developer) will miss the point entirely. This game represents brilliance.

I can only take comfort in the fact that i can always go back to the glory days of isometric turn based bliss and throw down with the original dogmeat. Yes, there are some bugs and flaws, like a very bad AI, but it is the most addictive game I have ever played. Me being an RPG game whore, this makes #1 on my list for RPG games. The free-roaming and the ability to take your character in any direction makes a perfect game for people who love If I could, I would give this game a 23984927230935.     Only complaints: Dated graphics, and somewhat buggy (you can miss and screw up events in the game and the NPCs act as if you knew what you did). Great story, and great open-ended ROLEPLAYING game. Well developed game for sure. Can't wait for Fallout 3, I hope it lives up.

    The good: Graphically the game looks fantastic even today because of it's advanced 2D engine. With Ron Perlman narrating the beginning and end, along with other voice actors voicing key characters, not to mention great ambient music. The game still sounds fantastic, even the gunshots sound great still. With many characters whom you may fall in love with, or loathe with every fiber of your being, the development of the story is fantastic. The story it self is tied into tons of small experiences that make this game shine still from a narrative standpoint in ways most modern titles can't match. The turn based combat is a fine system that allows you to form strategies at your own pace, though computer turns can take a while. There are plenty of weapons, starting simple and getting bigger and more powerful as you go. When you get your first laser or plasma gun it feels like a real accomplishment. Same goes for armor with your first power armor making you feel neigh invincible. The game is full of adult and dark humor that's good enough to illicit a chuckle from even the most jaded cynic.

    The bad: Due to the isometric boards being seen from only one view point somethings can be difficult to reach and enemies may die in places you can't loot them in. Also the game lacks in the fact it uses a hexagon layout on the isometric boards. Looting enemies can be a chore because you have to take each item, or item stack individually. Another note is that if two enemies fall in the same hex you'll only be able to loot one of them. A final issue is that the counter for item movement maxes out at 999, this can make transferring large numbers of bottle caps(the ingame currency) a bit of a chore, also the counter moves slowly if you're not moving a few or a lot of caps all at once.

    Final note: While not perfect this game is a legend in it's own right, and Black Isle made one hell of a game out of it. With it available on Steam and Good Old Games packaged with it's sequel and Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel it's well worth picking up.    … Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is good to say that this isn't the chapter, in Fallout serie, with which I began my ascent into this fantastic and unique world. In fact I fell in love with Fallout 3, and only then I discovered the previous chapters. But let's talk about Fallout, and not Fallout 3. I played the first chapter of Fallout already years ago, but I hadn't the ability to finish a game like that. Too complex, too difficult. Then recently I wanted to start again with a view to the release of Fallout 4, and then I re-started the first adventure in the Wastelands.

    Fallout's plot is simply fantastic and exciting. The historical background of retro-futuristic 21st century, 2077's Great War and the rest, is structured and interesting, full of meaning. It starts with a simple but dangerous mission, then move on to decide the fate of an entire area. It thus comes as something that concerns only Vault 13 and a small group of people, up to face a threat of extraordinary proportions. The Master: simply one of the best bosses and villains in gaming history. His story, his vision of a new world, through "The Unity" and transformation of men into supermutants, where differences fade and catalyze as a genetic destiny that allows them to survive in the Wastelands. A real evolution and revolution. Not just religious fanaticism, hope and peace in a rotten and sick world. Just think about christian's missionary missions in the Americas in the past, and recently in Africa. Bring a new religion, helping people, professing love and peace. This is the way The Master brings people to his future vision of the world using his disciples, the Children of the Cathedral, hiding of course all negaive things that follow. The Master, however, has miscalculated: thinking so much of humans' evolution, he forgot strong viruses' evolution; VEF virus that has mutated making his plan useless, all his work wasted, simply making mutants unable to reproduce. Just poetic. And what the Vault Dweller has faced for his people, for the salvation of an entire generation is simply amazing. Compared to other RPGs, Fallout's character does not have a "real personality", but his actions, the facts, the events speak for him. And even after facing hell in person and have sacrificed everything, he has been kicked out of the house for which he fought, and that he always protected. Not a word. Not a gesture. He took his responsibilities and just... went away. Sad but great scene when Vault Dweller moves away into the desert, leaving the world behind him, with the song "Maybe".

    Fallout's gameplay is hard to define: definitely the same gameplay of classic RPGs, but showed some characteristics that made it unique and so loved... or hated. Personally, I liked the gameplay: skill points and how they weigh on the development of the character is real, tangible and simply extraordinary. The turn-based combat is great, never boring, and well balanced in difficulty. Perhaps there was an abuse of "action points" concept: spend 1 AP only to open inventory, it seems a bit excessive. You can have companions, but you have to care about them cause they can die and running out of ammo. The trading system is just perfect, since it can operate both in terms of barter or using the currency of the game, bottlecaps, to trade stimpaks, weapons, armor and ammunition. However traders don't have a respawn of goods, and doesn't make sense, because the economy of the game is undermined, because you aren't able to obtain constant supplies of material to continue the adventure. The map is very big, and travel is realistic because a trip may take days (in-game, of course) to arrive at a given destination. Moreover, even if the map is quite large, it is clear how only 12 predefined locations are really detailed, important and interesting to visit. The level of gore and violence in the game is simply raw, realistic and delicious. Only real flaw in this game, but very heavy, is the timer to complete the first part of the main quest. The game is already very complex on its own, and people to talk to or objects to be recovered are not easy to find, but with the timer about 150 days to find the water-chip, the game forces the player to a senseless hurry, avoiding beautiful side quests for fear of running out of time, leading to the game over. Simply exaggerated, it is to admit it. This "defect" definitely alienated many people from the game, including myself, the first time I played it.

    The graphics in isometric view is fascinating and well crafted, the creation of steampunk and retro-futuristic world is artistically stunning and work perfectly. Also the realization of post-nuclear world's context is made very well. The soundtrack is good, well focused in places and events, and some tracks are disturbing.

    Fallout is symbol of quality obtainable only from classic RPGs. Hard to play, but it will worth it; Fallout has its flaws, and not by a little, but is still definitely an undisputed masterpiece of videogames.    … Expand

    The first Fallout for me was the second game I played from the series. I really enjoyed the story, especially the last couple quests and the ending. Just great story telling.
    Mechanics and gameplay is just the same like in F2 with some minor difference. Maybe it's not like the open world games of today but at the time this was and open world to explore.     Worth replaying again and again.

It's combat isn't all that great, especially since it's almost all about your stats. But if you can look past that, then I recommend it. It has a great story and is a good RPG all around.     One of the RPGs of all time. Very good plot with an amazing post-apocalypse atmosphere.All your choices matter. The fact that you can approach quests very differently makes the game very replayable. started after Fallout 4 for learning about lore, stayed for amazing unforgettable characters. Though learning gameplay takes time and it's not for everyone.

    I am extremely new to rpgs as i usually only play roguelikes or other casual games .
    Only a few hours in i am more or less hooked from the atmospheric music to the rustic graphics this game is amazing from a sensual perspective . It does a great job of building a sense of apprehension in the player as the first few times i travelled out side of the vault and the surrounding cave i died .     D&D meets road warrior. The engine will not be outdone. Great video stategy board-like standard game.

    The series engine of the first two Fallout games stands on its own in the gaming industry.

    I play this Fallout game here and there on and off about once a year. I just want to say that this game is awesome, has a great story and is just a great RPG overall. It is a shame what Bethesda did to Fallout 4, but Fallout 3 was better than Fallout 4 in many ways anyways. I hope Bethesda has learned from their mistakes in Fallout 4.

    Fallout 1 is a great RPG that anyone who is a fan of fallout or RPGs should try out and as someone who really doesn't like CRPGs I can say that I had a good time non the less as the story is really worth it. But also make sure you get the Fixit mod as it fix many of the older annoyances in it.

    Perhaps the strongest aspect of Fallout is that it is ideal for RPG newbies yet at the same time provides a depth of role-playing that veterans can really get stuck into. It also has the best replay value of any game I've experienced to date.

    This game is awesome, it does have re-playability that faulted a bit in the second game. Power armor has gone from overly powerful to almost regular type armor through the fallout series. I beat this game 3 times and played a different type character each time. I first played as the heavy on guns guy and ran through blazing. (It's been years since I've played) I did off the wall things in some towns which later towns referenced back to, it didn't make a huge impact on the story line but I thought it was really amusing they 'heard of my activity'

    Second I played a character who was high in social and outdoor skills and talked my way out of everything and if I couldn't talk I used my outdoor skills to evade fights. Towards the end when I had to fight I got some power armor and was instantly almost as strong and capable as someone who had been made for fighting. Some people will probably see this as bad balancing but I liked that I was able to make it through most the game without a single fight and when I had to fight I had a scapegoat.

    The world is large and free to roam, and the decision to have soft preventative measures other than hard ones makes the game much more immersive. (With one exception, which is a guy with infinite HP.)

    The combat is amazing from a gamist point of view, though Fallout 2 improves it arguably at the cost of the perfect atmosphere and connected feeling environments that Fallout has.

    The alternate paths the player can take, from a pacifist run where you directly kill no NPCs, to a berserk run where you kill all the wasteland's inhabitants you meet. And both can finish the game. The freedom of action and character building go perfectly hand in hand.

    I've noticed the steady downhill slide of civilization Fallout 3 is rated higher than Fallout 1. This epic RPG deserves at least 9.5. I recommend this masterpiece all the gamers who can appreciate the qualities of the old isometric RPGs like Planescape: Torment or Baldur's gate. Fans of Gothic 1,2 should like it too.

    The difficulty is pretty high if u dont save that often its mostly the same over and over again ^^ but if u like to save often this is the best...
    My favorite Game of all time!!!!!

    My one real problem with Fallout is that I don't think the game has aged as well as other games like it. At the time of it's release by far the best game of the year. But the graphics aged badly and frankly the interface is cumbersome. At the time of it's release by far the best game of the year. But the graphics aged badly and frankly the interface is cumbersome.     15 years on and this is still an amazing game, though the user score on here is shocking, some reviews on here are made by people who simply didn't give the game a chance.Yes there are bugs, there are also fixes, the only bug in the current version I found is the colour which is an incredibly easy fix.

    One of the best games I've ever played, you will get used to the controls after a short time and if you pay the slightest bit of attention to the storyline you won't care about the fact that the graphics are 15 years old, give it a chance.

    If you get stuck there's no shame in looking at a guide to set you back on the right track, if a section is too tough, there's no shame in turning down the difficulty, don't vote it low based on the fact that you couldn't work something out or that it took you too long to complete.    … Expand

    I played this for the first time in 2014 and it's now my favourite PC game. I would rate it 9.8/10. For 1997 it had unexpectedly smart visuals with close-ups in dialogue, combat animations, beautiful environments and excellent art design.

    The "S.P.E.C.I.A.L." character system is unique, there are funny icons illustrating every "perk". Dialogue choices and actions change the game world meaningfully. On top of that Fallout has the best top down combat system I have experienced. Targeting different body parts with unarmed, melee and different types of ammo makes it very tactical. The combat animations are engrossing.

    Sound effects and voice acting are good, the music however is reptitive. Put on some 50's or 60's music and enjoy this classic!    … Expand

In what subsequent game have players felt the need to keep a baseball bat to use once they ran out of bullets for their single, rusting gun? Great character development. GREAT writing, great plots great NPCs Great humour. I think that nostalgia blurs people's vision somehow. Great though this game was it neverTimeless Classic.     It's a pretty fun game but it's ruined by it's lack of replayability value. And not just after you beat it, if you die (which you will... a lot) and haven't saved in a bit (since there's no quicksave or autosave it's easy to forget) you just really, really don't want to do the crap you just did, especially if it involes fighting.     Second RPG PC game i ever played (after dungeon master) and funny is that no other game had so good atmosphere like this game. Almost every part of this game is perfect. Must own for every RPG fan and truly legendary game.

    The spiritual successor to Wasteland.
    It's one of the best RPGs ever made.

    Post apocalyse have never been this good :).
    Great story, intresting characters, good but dated combat.
    And the ending where the speaker tells how your actions have changed the different locations is always nice. (One of the first if not the first to do that).

    Fallout deserves every bit of praise it gets. Many games claim to have consequences for the choices you make but very little do it as well as Fallout. There are a large number of ways to complete this game each providing a very different experience. The game can be completed very quickly if you know what to do but the huge replay value will keep you coming back.

    I absolutely love the Fallout series. If you enjoyed F3/NV, you will love this. Yes, the combat is different, but it has a brilliant story line, and is what its successors have been building upon. My favorite series by far.

    The mood is right, the graphics good, and the plot compelling. I found the tactical combat system refreshingly intelligent, and the multitude of ways you can approach the game from a stats point of make a wide variety of styles possible in the game.
