Another highly compromised VR remaster, that offers one of the best open world experiences so far and yet still manages to feel deeply flawed as it does so.

Fallout 4 VR delivers a vast, living world, with a great atmosphere that was made for exploration in virtual reality. Some of the game mechanics like the menu system needs polishing, but Bethesda has given us a viable alternative to playing the game on a PC or console.

If VR survives I don’t think Fallout 4 VR is a game we look back on in 10 years and herald as an essential breakthrough, as a game that added to our understanding of the medium. It’s not. Those experiments are happening along the periphery in studios and engines and games that are much more flexible than Bethesda and the Creation Engine and Fallout 4. But as something for existing owners to pad out their libraries with, and as a demonstration of how expansive our worlds can get, and lastly as an ambassador from the world of bigger-budget projects? Let’s just say I expect quite a few of you will have those “Oh damn, it’s already 4 A.M.?” moments.

All in all Fallout 4 VR is good, but not the amazing experience I was hoping it would be. It’s fun, expansive and ambitious, yet also flawed and wonky. And while it’s not a total bomb, it didn’t completely blow me away, either. Bethesda game are like a big, clumsy factotum friend who you can forgive for not being perfect because they do so many things so well. Fallout 4 VR has its share of problems, but I found myself wanting to jump right back in after a few hours away from the wasteland to see what I could uncover next. I know I’ll be playing this for weeks if not months to come, and hopefully some of the graphical and Touch control issues will be addressed in a future update.

At first glance Fallout VR impresses with its huge scale and sheer mass, and it does very well in the action/ shooting/ movement field, but it never manages to captivate a seasoned VR user due to its lack of actual virtual reality gameplay implementations and unintuitive and uncomfortable Pip-Boy controls. A game aspiring to lead the VR-gaming sector should be made for VR from the scratch.

They have simply remapped the controls to the wireless control pads. You can't pick anything up or "touch" anything, it's all button presses like the flat version. The result is very clunky controls when a proper VR game should feel natural.

Give it a miss unless they completely re-work the controls. Or more likely, someone makes a mod to improve it.

They did nothing other than alter the combat so that it suits VR. And combat has been done better in most low budget VR games coming from independent studios. The environments and NPCs have all been left exactly as they are in the original game. Controls are clumsy and the graphics are sub par when compared to other VR games. This is essentially a fallout 4 mod that they're charging $60.00 for. Full Review »
