Perfect game, sure it may be like oblivion and the engine but it is really good.. You start off as a baby, child, then adult, you even get to take a test which is really realistic. It has that nice bioshock feeling aswel for some reason. It feels sort of old style.
Anyway, alot of quests to do.. Gets exciting by the minute, congratulations Bethesda softworks for making a perfect game.

I played and completed this game (which took ages btw ^^) and not because of bugs, or anything, but because its a long game! I had very VERY rare crashes, and was kept laughing right the way though by crazy dialoge. This is a great game and amazing value for money time wise. In short, This game is teh winz.

just to stay home and play a game, in my book they have found a great game. In a day and time when too many games, and especially shooters, can only offer one 10 or 12 hours of unrepetitive game play, Fallout's almost unlimited sandbox play is a lot gaming bang for the buck.

An average FPS with some elements of RPG, aimed for teen audience mainly (despite its rating). Horrible animation, sterile dialogues. In a nutshell, it's the game for everybody (mostly for casual players, that is accessible even for the last retard, as Bethesda considers it). And It's hard not to mention the terrible "right-from-the-consoles" PC version of the game.

cons: suffers a bit from "consolitis" - meaning things like only 3-4 dialog options at a time from limited console screen space, VATS makes it almost too simple in combat sometimes, canned responses from "non-major" characters, sub-par graphics in some areas from being ported from a console with limited texture memory (although better than oblivion)

Zoh my God. So this game is totally bad for many reasons. First it uses teh engine that Oblivion was built on. This is the same reason I hate all Quake games (they were built with Doom engines) and Call of Duty: WOW (built with COD 4 engine). Also, anything built with the Source engine except for Half-Life 2 (this means TF2, Left for Dead, CS: Source, Etc.). Next, graphics, my PC is oldZoh my God. Next, graphics, my PC is old and can't run it <-- obviously a shortcoming of the game. Bugs, I played through the entire game; I put about 30 hours into it. THE GAME CRASHED 5 TIMES. Also, there was one time where a quest-necessary character got stuck on an object. I was left no choice but to quick-load!!!! These glitches made it nigh on unplayable. Voice acting... all I need to say, done by people. This means sometimes it is not Oscar worthy acting... terrible shortcoming. Also, the music, its like they took it straight from the 1940's or something. You think they could have gotten something more modern... like Soulja Boi.

...The long and short of it is, this game is amazing. If you liked Oblivion or Morrowind (or any RPG for that matter), you will absolutely love this game. I only wish it were longer...

@JeffC: There's no such thing as a water pistol in the game, and it doesn't have any multiplayer. We are talking about Fallout 3, not some childish disney game.
The game is perfect, from the graphics, to the character personalities. This game has it all, and it indeed deserves to be on the top 50. Although, I wish Bethesda could do something about those bugs that keep coming

Fallout 3 is a stunning sequel to the original series. Bethesda has managed to remain faithful to the original Fallout 1 & 2 but have released a new fully realised 3D world in Fallout 3. I am most impressed by the adult storyline. This gritty post holocaust world is well worth exploring. Bravo Bethesda!

Fallout 3 has potential but suffers a lot from mediocre game design. First problem of fallout 3 is the gameplay. The V.A.T.S. system of location-specific targeting has been added to sort of simulating turn-based combat for those interested, but it is poorly done with some repetitive and boring killing animations. Gameplay is primarily first-person, but it turns out not working very well since you are not able hit anyone if not using awkward V.A.T.S system at the beginning. Second the game's quests are mostly done with linear solutions. In Fallout 2, most of quests can be done in different ways. it seemed that there would be a lot of choices in how Fallout 3's quests were to be solved but shortly after going into the game, those different solutions tend to fade away especially for the main quest. Fallout 3 tries to give you an illusion of choices to impact the story but it actually does not offer any non linearity in the quest structure. But I still would say Fallout 3 is a fun game to kill time in a virtual, massive and varied world, just do not treat it like a fallout game, it just does not have the spirit of Fallout. Expand

I haven’t played the original fallout series (although I intend in the future). So, my review of fallout 3 (GOTY edition), is not contaminated by any feelings of nostalgia.

~Visuals (Grade 4 ) (Yes, I know this is a 2008 game, but compared with other AAA games from that time, fallout 3 doesn’t look very good in the visual department)
    - The Good: (Good modeling, especially the outdoor environments; Vast and varied outdoor map; Game world feels realistic)
    - The Bad: (Ugly textures; Poor indoor lighting; Limited color scheme (Only 3 prevalent colors: Brown, grey and black); Awful shadow effects (for AAA game at least); Repetitive Indoor maps (Buildings, underground structures, etc..); No dynamic weather; Clunky animations; Some graphic glitches (but not many); Still a bit buggy (Didn’t experience any crashes though))

    ~Sound (Grade 7)
    - The Good: (Realistic sound effects (especially the gun effects))
    - The Bad: (Uninspired voice acting; Generic and painfully repetitive soundtrack)

    ~Story (Grade 5)
    - The Good: (Mother ship Zeta DLC (Very nice story, it’s 7/10 compared with the rest of the game))
    - The Bad: (Generic story; Lack of focus; Uninspired writing; Uninteresting and boring characters)

    ~Gameplay – (Grade 6)
-The Good: (Decent character creation options; Decent FPS mechanics; Satisfying kills; Fun (at least for the first 8 hours); Decent assortment of weapons and armors; Tons of places to see and explore; 100 hours worth of gameplay)
-The Bad: (Unbalanced leveling up mechanics that make the game too easy (I have only died 5 or 6 times in 70 hours of playing this game, and that’s because I am not very good at FPS games); Over focus on action (shot first ask questions later mentality)/ few pacifist choices; Action with few tense moments or substance (that’s what happens when you have too much amo and med pack); Boring side quests; Choices didn’t felt that important in the overall scheme of thing; Unexciting loot (most of it is just useless junk); Useless stealth options (it’s always more efficient to just run and gun through a level); Stupid A.I. (The companions I.A. in particular, because they always get in the way).)

    ~Everything else – (Grade 10)
-The Good: (Decent menu options; Tons of mods to experiment; DLC with good value)

In conclusion: Despite its multiple faults, Fallout 3 can be fun at times, especially when exploring the cities, but the fun moments are few and far between.
After 70 Hours of gameplay it left me with a “bad after taste”. It had potential to be great, and at times you can see glimpses of greatness, but unfortunately Bethesda has decided to give us quantity over quality, and the end result is not that great.
If you like sand box games with tons of places to explore, and are willing to excuse the game’s bad story, awful visuals, zero challenge and repetitive fights. Than this might be a good distraction for you, at least for a few hours, but I recommend installing a few mods first, for the best experience.
However, if you are looking for an exciting Sci-fi adventure, with interesting characters and story, skip this one and go buy Mass effect or Deus Ex.

This game was a lot of fun when it came out, and I have 154 hours logged, but it has not aged well. The game has a lot of major flaws. I think Fallout New Vegas is an absolute masterpiece, so I will use New Vegas to explain what is wrong with Fallout 3.

Melee and unarmed attacks are completely useless. This is because Fallout 3 armor seems to reduce damage as a percentage rather than reducing damage by a set amount. Suppose your armor in Fallout 3 reduces damage by 30%. How many bullets do you eat before you land a single melee hit on an enemy? That adds up. You take massive damage while closing the gap.

That damage reduction system works in both directions. In Fallout New Vegas, there are a lot of enemies you can't kill within the first hours of the game. Giant radscorpions in New Vegas have a very high damage threshold, so most guns don't do any damage. Attacking them requires a bit of strategy, and you need to think about which gun you are using. High damage with low fire rate is better than low damage at a high fire rate, and shotgun slugs are very effective while shotgun shot is useless. Fallout 3 is nothing like that. Every enemy in the game can be killed with any weapon in the game. It might take a lot of bullets, but you certainly can kill a Deathclaw in Fallout 3 using the SMG.

Grenades are hilariously overpowered in Fallout 3. The VATS aiming thing stays in slow motion until the grenade explodes, and I think you are invincible during VATS. This means you can go nuts and grenade kill everything. The VATS aiming will land the grenade close enough, the enemy can't run away because it's slow motion, and they can't kill you during that time. Some would say this is a positive for Fallout 3 because it gives an easy "i win" button to any problem. Fallout New Vegas did away with all of that. Grenades in New Vegas will aim like the grenades in Fallout 3, but the slow motion ends when the grenade lands, and you can be killed during that time.

I believe Fallout 3 also has a lack of gun options. The first rifle you get is the hunting rifle. It's pretty good, but it doesn't scale well. It has a low fire rate and low damage, so it becomes useless at higher levels. The next long range gun is the sniper rifle. The sniper rifle is a great gun, but it's rare and it breaks very quickly. The game basically forces you to use Chinese assault rifles at the higher levels. How did Fallout New Vegas differ? It has a .357 rifle, a .44 rifle a .45-70 rifle, a 5.56 rifle, a .50 rifle, and each gun has a variety of ammunition types (a .357 can fire .38 special). New Vegas did it right. You are never forced to use one or two guns. There are so many options.

Is Fallout 3 a good game? Yes it is, but I can't play it anymore because I know that Fallout New Vegas is so much better in every possible way.

My biggest gripes with this game, specially considering its an rpg:

Linear Main Story: Despite its expansive world, the main story can feel somewhat linear in comparison. This could potentially limit the player's sense of agency, especially if they prefer non-linear storytelling.

The game play, animations and A.I. has not aged well. While the DLC super tanked health/damage enemies can be an annoying grind in time and resources to put down. ( I deactivate the DLC till late game ). Another minor annoyance is the actual ability to use power armor only drops very late game. It is not even OP like in Fallout 4 so I use a power armor training mod off Nexus ( level 2 with 25 science requirements ).

I have spent hundred and hundreds of hours in the base game 99% unmodded on the PC and still do. Yes it does have a dated feel to it all now, but I don't care. In the fun department it has still stood the test of time, because I am still very much playing it.

I first played the game sometime in 2010 and It was love at first sight.

The map was enormous, choices were everywhere and the mass amount of junk you could pick up was perfect for that one spot in my Tenpenny tower that was starting to get a little lonely.

I played it non-stop, all day every day on my ps3 for longer than I can remember. I probably had about a hundred hours in my first week on it, it is just so gripping.

Once I completed the main quest I had thought about backtracking and completing all the side quests I had once neglected, but I didn't. Instead, I restarted from the very start, created a whole new character and finished every single mission I found in bliss.

I have lost count of how many times I have replayed Fallout 3. There are so many different options and dialogue choices I could never resist the urge to play it.

Only recently I added mods to the game to add some graphical enhances on top of many new quests and new items and played through its entirety once more. I enjoyed every single moment of it.

On Fallout 3, you have many different skills to level up. You can choose to go into sneaking, pickpocketing, lockpicking, speech, unarmed, big guns, explosives, barter and many other skills.

On top of skills to learn there are 58 regular perks, 5 special perks and 7 quest perks in the normal game. More can be added through certain mods and DLC but there is really no need as the vanilla amount is already very high.

On top of skills, you have a Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting (VAT) installed in your pipboy (a device you wear on your arm to access menus) which brings time to a halt and allows you to target your enemies and have a chance to shoot their limbs, so long as your confident with the percentage to hit them that is.

Honestly, if you have not played this game yet you are truly missing out on an amazing game.

Sure, its graphics have aged and there may be bugs (It's a Bethesda game after all) but graphics and bugs are easily fixed with a mod or two.

You literally start your adventure from the womb, learning the controls of the game as you navigate around as an infant. Typical for RPGs, you'll allocate points into base attributes: Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Luck (S.P.E.C.I.A.L). The game fast forwards you to pre-adolescence where Dad teaches you how to use a gun on your birthday. The whole thing plays like a first-person shooter, with several dialogue choices to pick from when you talk to other characters. Your character is YOU, and looks like you want him/her to.

After the "tutorial" is through, you walk out of the "vault" you grew up in, into the radioactive, post-apocalyptic world of Fallout. Your quest is to find out what happened to your father, who has gone missing. If that doesn't sound open-ended enough, it's important to note that you can literally do ANYTHING at this point. Feel free to head off in any direction and start your new life as a Wastelander.

Whatever you choose to do, you will be rewarded. Along your journey you will find many interesting guns and weapons, and pieces of clothing and armor to wear which will change your appearance. There are a ton of weapons to collect in this game, and you can even create your own from schematics you will come across, provided you've collected the right materials. There are rifles, all sorts of explosives, and even a gun that shoots garbage at enemies! As you level up, you'll be able to improve skills such as Lockpicking, Speech, and Science, which will allow you to more easily unlock doors, persuade others, and hack computer terminals, respectively.

The combat initially seems like nothing special, at least unless you use V.A.T.S, a combat mode that essentially pauses the combat (it really slows things down to an imperceptible crawl) and lets you target limbs, each with a different probability to hit. This basically allows you to treat firefights as turn-based combat, which is cool from an RPG standpoint, and awesome when you realize how exciting it is when a Super Mutant's head flies off from the blast of a shotgun. Regardless, the combat is fast, exciting, and punishing.

The enemies in Fallout 3 are of the creepy, mutated kind, for the most part. They make weird noises and the ones that can talk will sometimes curse at you. This is definitely not a "family" game, the whole thing has a very bleak, edgy feeling to it. It all adds to the atmosphere, however.

The Capital Wasteland is sprawling and alive. As you travel throughout it, you will find groups of people, settlements, lone wanderers, etc. that all have stories to tell and quests for you to complete. This all makes for very good plot and immersion, and most of it is done fantastically. The dialogue choices are very interesting and allow you to "react" in character. A high Speech skill will allow you to convince stubborn characters to do things they would otherwise be resistant to. While the environment of the wasteland is not "pretty" in the classical sense, the soda machines, propaganda posters, and lots of other little touches make it real and fascinating.

Who you are in Fallout 3 is your choice. You can choose to steal, murder the innocent (I believe you can kill almost EVERYONE in this game), and do "evil" things, which could be objectively advantageous, but will reduce your Karma. Likewise, good deeds increase your Karma. If you have low Karma, unsavory characters will take more of an interest in you, and honest characters will dislike you. This adds to the immersion and excitement of the game, especially when playing "evil", as the guilt will start to sink in rather quickly. I like to roleplay a certain temperament and act accordingly. The choice is yours.

If aimlessly wandering around and amassing wealth and weaponry isn't satisfying enough (though it really is), the main storyline in Fallout 3 is phenomenal. There are many exciting missions and moments that will not leave your memory, and will shake and challenge you to your emotional core. When it's over, it's very likely that you will have only explored a fraction of what the game has to offer. Should you choose to start over, you owe it to yourself to make different choices and see how the game unfolds. It may surprise you; as much as the Capital Wasteland can change you, you can change the Capital Wasteland.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The First Fallout game made by Bethesda.
As a first step into the Franchise, I gotta say its a decent start.
The biggest difference between the first Fallout games and 3 is that this game is a shooter, but you're character's ability with weapons depends on you're skills with the many types of weapons that were present in the past games. This includes small guns, big guns, energy weapons, explosives, unarmed and melee weapons. The better the skill, the better you can use this weapon as your damage and accuracy goes up. However, the gun play has definitely aged as it is very clunky and it can be annoying to see you're weapon constantly spread out shots. But, the game uses V.A.T.S like the previous games where you can use it to quickly pot shot at certain points of the enemy you choose to die. This was the same for the past Fallout games as well.
As an RPG, you're decisions will effect the outside world and everyone's opinion of you. You're character will engage in dialogue a lot as they make decisions, speech checks and even interesting dialogue options based on certain perks you have. Ah yes, there are other skills as such barter, science and more that allow you to do certain actions with certain things.
However, I cannot recommend this game to new players due to it's clunky gameplay and "meh" gun play. But if you wanna take look into the Fallout games, this is a decent start.
This game's story is pretty good. you are born in a world of the atomic apocalypse caused in 2077. It has been 200 years since then and your Father leaves the Vault unexpectedly, and you must find him... you are the Lone Wanderer...

I think this game is as good as the previous two but better by having a much larger world and details for exploration. People thinks that you have just a few locations with beings to interact with but this is what makes it real. I won't expect to have packs and packs after such a tragedy on top of the evil humanity without law boundaries. The main story line is too short that's true, but i really have fun in exploring all those abandon buildings with no related quests. That's the point that you have to pay attention to the NPC in order to get to without a game guide. You could learn much better by checking out the fan wiki and find out that almost all of those are a reference. I would say after all these years it worth you of that 20 bucks if you found it in a bargain bin.

Edit: You can turn the game into a TPS or FPS anytime you want, you can always shoot by using VATS. That's what make me liked the game more and more since I hate shooter.

I couldn' t expect this game to be so good by reading some reviews. I fact there is everything I wish for a smart RPG: some interesting dialogs, a coherent and immersive world and a good leveldesign. My first Fallout game. Still my favorite one.

Great open-world to explore, charming characters and great DLC!

The game is quite impressive, even for today standards, despite some technical issues regarding to compatibility to the most updated systems and we are warned on Steam page that Fallout 3 is not optimized for Windows 7 and later.
But I managed to override those issues, and I could replay it again, and in the end the only thing that I could not get to work was the fact that Steam was not counting properly my game time.

The graphics are very good, for 2008 standards, and the map is huge. Traversing it and see all its destruction makes us feel lonely and in the end of the world. But we always can overcome that feeling with some music, and the 50's style music that we find in the radio make us think how the world was before.

It's an amazing experience, with countless hours of gameplay... Is a classic of the gaming history.
Fully recommend it, a "must have" to any gaming collection.

One of my personal favorite games! The story is deep and well whiten, and the characters have great personality. A few bugs get annoying, but nothing to bad. The graphics still look great to this day. I love the perk system! I suggest getting it on Xbox one via backwards compatibility. The best game in the fallout franchise for sure.

Along with that, thee roleplaying mechanichs of this game are really underwhelming, it doesn't offer mucho of a chance to have your own combat style or give your character some personality through dialogue.
It's fine on its own I guess, but overall a step back in this franchise.

I liked the 3rd Fallout, it has a certain vibe that I really enjoyed. It is not as good as TES series, but still quite engaging.

For its time, it was a masterpiece.

I played this one a long time ago, but I clearly remember that I wanted to forget the game in order to experience the journey once again. The plot is definitely better than in other Bethesda games I've played(Skyrim/Fallout 4). I wouldn't say it's a perfect one, but at least it was interesting to play. I like the games with atmosphere and Fallout 3 definitely provides such experience.

This game is something more decisive than the games I played before (let the god of the game undertale forgive me).

Simply an amazing game. If you love RPGs and you are willing to give up some time, then this is a must-play. It is better than Skyrim, Fallout 4, and almost any other RPG you will find. The gameplay is fun. and the story is great.

Fallout 3 is a disappointment that unfortunately portended a negative turn for the series. The opening segment of the game is strong but the rest of the game is simply shallow at best. The characters aren't particularly well-written and the plot is not very interesting. Also, the ending is a big let down as well. I would recommend that you probably avoid this installment of the series.

No longer a point and click RPG, but a first person shooter with RPG elements. I liked playing this when it came out, I played to the end (before the DLC ruined that) and had fun with all the strange weapons. After the recent blunders with Fallout 76, it's hard to ignore how klunky this game actually plays. Expand

Есть V.A.T.S. V.A.T.S.
Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition
The Last of Us, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, BioShock.

The game may be great in scope however coming from playing the first Fallout, Fallout 3 just fells like you are standing in a wading pool trying to imagine you are in an ocean. Even more evident if you come into it after experiencing New Vegas (which uses the same assets and engine).

This is a fantastic game and had I written this review in 2008 I would definitely give the game a top score. However, after replaying the game recently, this is still a must-play for fans of the first-person role-playing genre. But it has lost some of the charms it once had in my mind, I really want to love this game as much as I did when it first came out, and it is still great. Fantastic! I Love This game so much... only got to play it a little the year it came out.. but playing it now in 2019 proves to me, that this game is absolutely fantastic even today, and still looks and plays beautifully.
The Lore is wonderful, the atmosphere does so much for the game, and the player.
it's almost as if the game, is like a journey into your own mind, through the darkness

it really cast itself as a new genre called Atompunk, where nuclear energy is prominent and the semi-conductor (silicon-transistor) hasn't been invented until the near end of the modern world.
a Must Play, for anyone who loves adventure, exploration in a progression and pace that makes you actually feel in danger.

Minor niggles aside, Fallout 3 is almost entirely spectacular. Everything from the graphics, to the sound, to the plot is first-rate. The VATS system worlds like a charm, and it’s so easy to get the hang of, you’ll be cracking skulls like there’s no tomorrow. [Dec 2008, p.55]

A vast and open world of unimaginable possibilities opens in front of you in Fallout 3. Great story, flawless combat system, and the option to choose your own way makes it a hot candidate for game of the year. [Nov 2008]
  3. Fallout 3 is one of this year's best games. It's an unforgettable journey that lives up to the series. You are an ex-vault 101 inhabitant, and you discover a whole new world, full of zombies, mutants, raiders, aliens and all kinds of creatures. Welcome to this post-apocaliptic reality, where you are going to spend hundreds of hours.
