This has to be a joke. Someone please tell me the developers are playing a seriously out of date April Fool's prank on PC gamers? Seriously? No mouse support for menus? A, B, W, A, S, D, Tab, Insert, Home and End keys to navigate the game with no remapping allowed? WTH?

To top it off, this is the official developer's response when questioned about the lack of proper keyboard and mouse support:

    Oman [developer] 7 hours ago
We would have loved to add mouse support to the menu but we reached a point in the project where it was either going to be modding support or adding features such as mouse support in the menus. We chose modding.

They apparently consider an appropriate PC UI to be a "feature" and not a necessity. This would have gotten at least an 8 or 9 because it does have much better graphics but they apparently have no clue about what is needed for a PC interface for a game. Stay away from this and stick with the original if you want proper controls. Should they fix the controls scheme I am willing to re-review this game. As it stands, the controls scheme and lack of remapping is intolerable for a PC game.

No control customisation available, menu navigation suck (REALLY substandard for a decade old remake), dont try playing that crap with a mouse ... In the end, give it a pass and give your money to a game company that deserve it (Microsoft you suck even more for not being able to even put in a freaking mouse configuration menu or a mouse cursor for menu navigation.)

If you are like me - using gaming pc with keyboard and mouse (thats why i have pc...) dont even try playing this. I loved fable, its story, atmosphere, decisions, beautiful world. But this port is just so.. so bad. Default binds in menu are A and B ? WTF? Using inventory was like some kind of joke.

So id suggest you save your money and dont support these lazy developers.

I shouldn't have to press "Home, End, Page Up or Down" in order to view my quests. A Dark Souls port should not have been the goal here. I can even tell you a fix for the menu set Q and E to be section switches and have A and D change tabs. Or even better let us use the stupid mouse like really this is a PC game why can’t I use a mouse in the menus.
The most annoying thing which needs to be patched NOW I'm surprised no one has complained about this. I can see that everything has higher detail the problem is the game literally has a film or haze over it. This film is both in the menus and the game. The graphics are maxed out so what is this film I'm seeing I spent hours messing with the settings it won't go away. I'm sure it's for depth on a widescreen TV. But I have a gaming rig and the screen is in my face I instantly notice haze and I know it wasn't in the first fable. It's so bad that I can't see any new real detail besides the game appearing to have more saturation. Honestly I thought to my self the whole time I was playing I should just load up TLC and play that.
This game needs a huge menu overhaul and that Haze needs to be disabled. Unless you have a controller hooked up to your PC and don’t mind the haze wait till all of this gets patched otherwise you’re in for a huge disappointment.

    Gameplay

Fable Anniversary (FA) has largely left the control mechanisms the same since its previous release in terms of combat on PC. In fact, there appears to be no change whatsoever apart from a mild change with ranged weapons. Moving from target to target using Will is dizzying and somewhat irritating. The game itself leaves a lot to be desired in terms of navigation around menus and skilling up in the Skill pool. In the first Fable release on PC, users could rely on the curser to navigate through everything, this time round you simply use A, B, end and delete keys on the keyboard to move around different options, this is profoundly annoying and somewhat surprising Lionhead Studios didn’t even bother to correct a small issue like this. This screams a lazy, cheap and careless port to PC.

Despite today’s computing capability on both PC and console collectively, FA still breaks the world (map) into small segments leaving frequent loading screens every 50 metres, this isn’t necessary anymore.

The increased difficulty level in FA is a welcomed option.

    I rate gameplay 3.5/10 (given today's standards)

    Visuals

As an overall, visuals are the biggest change in FA. They are largely better than the first PC release of fable. Faces look fantastic and clothing has a lot more detail. Trees, grass and houses etc also look significantly better. Spell effects also look drastically better. However, everything seems to be a lot darker in FA and lacks the vibrance and colour the original illustrated.

    I rate visuals 6.8/10

    Story

FA still has the same great story we all enjoyed and loved many years ago, no changes have been made in this regard.

    I rate story 7/10

    Overall

FA as a restoration is questionable, it hasn’t taken into account past issues that plagued the original and sidesteps proper PC integration leaving the game almost with the feeling like a bunch of hackers managed to get it to work on PC. Its delivery is poor, clumsy and lazy which does not do such a great title, justice.

Firstly I was kinda startled by the alienated design recreation (compared to the original), but since having started to play Fable III, I understand they wanted to unify the game universe with this (all anew) art design.

I installed the game, gone into menu, just to see you need to push some weird A buttons on the keyboard to move in the menus. This was an indicator to bring out my XBox 360 controller I have laying around for parties and sport/racing games. So I did - and the game did play great on it, being obviously designed for the gamepad.

Anyways, the quality of the game, all features, quests, costumes - it is all there. Fable is to this day one of the best RPGs, surpassing even diamonds like The Witcher 1, because, supposed to be a fairy-tale inspired, the story is rather dark compared to nowadays RPGs', with lots of deaths and plot twists.

Also Lionhead obviously did build up on the golden age of video games era, so your choices did affect the gameplay and even NPC speeches and lines (feature not seen today at all). The hero you play as can also marry, age and even buy (and decorate) a house in the towns to live in, or rent. Yes, rent.

Even tho Anniversary brings not much new (upscaled resolution, new textures and faces, and a few goodies here and there), if you haven't played The Lost Chapters in the past, go buy it. But understand, it is 1:1 port, so gamepad is a must.

    Quality of the port: 5
    Quality of the game: 8
Quality of the Anniversary edition thus: 5+8:2= 6,5=7

At first I didn't like it because it was different, but then, after a hour or so, I found it quite beautiful. It is really like Fable was meant to be released 12 years later. The game itself is the same as it was back then (with the TLC addon) and the DLC connent fits right in it.
I like that you can choose between two different controller mappings and mouse and keyboard. For me I like the Fable 1 mapping best.
After completing the game I only found a very few bugs. Sometimes the lip sync is off, I had to restart the game once because the time was not changing anymore and at one time the game crashed during a save (not that big of a deal because autosave had saved right before that)

    TL;DR
Fable is the same genius game it was back then with graphics from today.
I give one point less of the perfect score because the fights didn't make that much fun anymore (they are still lot of fun) because the feel kind of old and the KI is sometimes acting very dumb (especially your companies or summons creatures).

Being that my experience with the controls was personally excellent I can't file any complaints specifically.

It's a beautiful looking game on some levels, the new assets and textures make for a charming juxtaposition against now archaic looking animation and some janky geometry. That said it has a timeless appeal nonetheless.

Gameplay is fine albeit frustrating to acclimate to in terms of combat, targeting and movement have come a long way since the original release of Fable and this remaster does nothing to remedy this fact. Character progression is great, it's aged brilliantly - perhaps unintentionally so, it's not so simple that it's laughable but it's not sophisticated enough to warrant confusion. You'll coast along with a reasonable bevy of choices available at any given time, then in due time the game will end and you'll feel suitably fulfilled.

Story length? Perhaps Fable was considered ambitious and grandiose in its time but now its a brief colourful venture, weighed down only by a surplus of loading screens and segmented regions. Maybe it's timing, but in today's gaming climate a "short" RPG with enough depth to justify itself is a rare sight; typically short games are all action so it's nice to see a conventional RPG condensed into a dessert rather than stretched out into a bleak 10 course meal.

The "story" is dull as dishwater - I've gone through with my character to Oakvale and I still don't actually care about him - or even like him. A big part of that is that the story never tells me why I should care (beyond hackneyed plot devices like "dead family" and "kidnapped-female-that's-important-to-me-because-she's-related-or-I'm-banging-her", but since we spend all of 20 seconds with them before they're dead/kidnapped... who gives a **** Problem 2, the kid doesn't even have a name. No amount of stupid titles or "hero!" or "boy!" are going to connect me to this weirdo. Problem 3, the kid's dead-eyed stare is just awful. I actually went and googled the original vs. the remake to see the differences and honestly? I kind of wish I COULD play the original because it LOOKS BETTER - in my opinion, anyway! There's not a lot out there, but what I saw looked brighter, and better, people actually looked like they had some facial expressions which weren't "rigor mortis rigid".

The keyboard/mouse control system is AWFUL, and I know everyone agrees on that one. Navigating menus is ****e, and really annoying is the choice to make delete/insert the left/right for the main menu tabs - my laptop has one key for both, meaning I have to use function/delete to move my tabs backward. In addition, sub-menus were home and end (I think? Something dumb), and sub-sub menus were the left/right keys, and sub-sub-SUBmenus were the up/down keys. Yes, navigation was a PITA.

I kept going in the hopes that eventually I'd start enjoying it, but frankly, when it crashed when I was just running around in Oakvale and I hadn't saved in forever, I couldn't be bothered, and just quit playing. Going to try 2 and 3, but this one was definitely a disappointment, and I'm appalled that they're still charging $40 for it - especially when its sequel is half that price!! I'd put it at $10 and call it an okay price - but I'd probably still not bother finishing it if it crashed mid-game.

Игра имеет много интересных систем, но помоему она морально устарела, играть в это в 2022 году крайне трудно

I enjoyed the original and I enjoy this version since it's easy on the eyes. Plenty of complaints about mouse support and whatnot, which is understandable, but I use a controller so it doesn't bother me. If you never played the original I say give it a go. It's an amazing game with an amazing story.

The game system is very creative, eating will make you fat, fishing and buying a house have a very high degree of freedom when playing this game.

It's one of those games that I can't get into even though I really want to. It gets very boring after a while. It's definitely not the kind of RPG game I'm used to. Even if Anniversary version has been updated a little more suitable for today and the game doesn't feel mediocre, my thoughts are not positive for now because I can't play the game for a long time. Know someone who's never experienced Fable, or has only played Fable 3? Get them on this.

The skill system still seems fresh, the battles run smoothly. And in the bizarre and brutal world of Fable I felt I was always at home. A worthy HD update to celebrate the 10 years anniversary, with a few technical problems.
