For MMO players tired of formulaic grinds and empty worlds, this is something richer, even if it comes at a cost. But be warned: if you’re looking for fast progress, you’re going to have a bad time. On Arrakis, everything fights back.

This unique MMORPG features many original elements, and you don't need to be a fan of the book or any film adaptations. However, to enjoy it, you need to be passionate about the survival genre, which forms the basis of this online world. Over the next few months and years, Dune could well flourish and become one of the top games in the genre.

In a time full of unfinished, bug-ridden game launches, Dune: Awakening is setting the bar higher for what the release of video games should be. My experience with early access was easily one of the best gaming experiences I've had in a long time, and I firmly believe Dune: Awakening has a very bright future ahead of it. Delivering a game this polished, with such an incredible amount of content right out of the gate, especially as an MMO, is a little bit mind-blowing. With complex and flexible skill-trees that encourage unique playstyles, and survival mechanics that might just be my favorite of all time, Dune: Awakening is worth every penny, and could very well be the new gold standard for MMOs.

Dune Awakening is a superb adaptation of the franchise created by Frank Herbert, in the form of an amusing blend of MMO and resource-gathering survival. Its possibilities are almost endless, and while the combat isn't entirely satisfying and the endgame needs some fine-tuning, this is one of the best recreations of the Dune universe in video game form that will captivate and entertain us for over 100 hours.

Dune:Awakening does a phenomenal job of making Arrakis come to life, from the oppressing heat and sand as far as the eye can see, to the terrifying encounters with Shai Halud. Once you get your feet under you, the game has dozens of hours of exploration and content to work through, making it a very enjoyable experience. The combat leaves a lot to be desired, but classes, weapons, and gadgets feel fun. Took some points off for lack of housing decoration options and mods, and for the lack of real end game content. Would love to see raids, or overworld bosses, and better boss encounters in Testing Stations. Over all Dune:Awakening is a unique and fun experience that will suck you in right away.

Far from being perfect, Dune: Awakening offers an experience that is first Survival and then largely MMO once the “endgame” is reached, which few modern games have managed to offer consistently. And while, as with all MMOs, we'll have to see how the game evolves over time to have a real opinion on it, for the moment it's more than up to the task of living up to the genres it claims to embody, despite often disappointing combat and a number of bugs as redundant as they are annoying, which won't be enough to tarnish its reputation: Dune: Awakening is a success that will undoubtedly convince many fans of the two genres it embodies.

Dune: Awakening takes advantage of the franchise's great momentum to create an immersive experience in the Arrakis desert, mixing MMO and survival elements in a good balance. Despite some technical flaws and combat that will need to be reworked by developer Funcom, it's a solid and fun base for a game that has everything it takes to become a benchmark in the genre.

If this mode is activated, anyone who dies in the High Desert loses everything they have on them and other users can take it, a bit like an extraction shooter. It is a rare event, but pay attention to your server's decisions and keep an eye on them to avoid unpleasant surprises.

If its areas in need of improvement are addressed swiftly, it has the potential to keep you trapped on Arrakis for a long time.

Playing Dune: Awakening is an uneven experience. The survival and building loops start strong, then eventually bog down, but experiencing the Dune universe and Arrakis is always engaging. If the game’s combat could reach the heights of its stellar world-building, Dune: Awakening would be very hard to put down. As it is, the game’s crafting/survival loops are just strong enough to keep me playing when its combat tempts me to stop.

Dune: Awakening won't appeal to everyone (because it doesn't want to). Those hoping for a dense MMO, rich in interactions and massive PvE content will likely be disappointed. But those willing to get lost alone, to the slow rhythm of harvests and storms, will discover an atypical, almost poetic game. A survival without screams, without jumpscares, but with that diffuse unease, that mystical strangeness that has been the strength of Dune since 1965. Funcom delivers here a very high-flying game, sometimes frustrating, often contemplative. We'll wait and see how it evolves, because its potential is enormous. As it stands, Dune: Awakening is already an exceptional experience, especially for those who like to walk for long periods in the desert, with no other goal than to get lost there.

At the time of writing this review, Dune Awakening is a product that offers Herbert fans absolute fidelity to the source material, combined with MMO gameplay that can be played very well even alone, thanks to a proven survival system that is not frustrating, but that "tests" the player just enough to encourage them to improve their skills. As it is structured "in potential", it is also a game that has not yet shown its true potential as an "MMO", which it will be able to express only when the fanbase is dedicated and numerous. There is a bright, albeit hot and sunny, future ahead of Awakening, if Funcom will be able to stage the promised global events with variety and consistency, and keep the community alive. Engaging it with new game dynamics, with sandstorms that will change the landscape and bring to light points of interest, Fremen ruins, clearings, crashed airships. As well as, with new "interactions" between players and sandworms... maybe!

Dune: Awakening wants you to explore its many nooks and crannies, find the best location for your base of operations, and come into your own as you learn the ins and outs of Arrakis. Its survival systems and world mechanics did a lot to make me feel immersed in the desert planet. Some of those immersive mechanics might go a step too far if you’re not someone who wants to keep logging in consistently, but if you’re in for the long haul, Dune: Awakening has a lot here for pretty much any type of player.

While there are still some questions around multiplayer balance, this is shaping up to be one of the year’s most ambitious and rewarding survival MMOs.

There’s still plenty for Awakening to work on though, as its combat never really hits its stride, the endgame is a bit of a chaotic mess not worth the effort, and there’s quite a few technical bugs yet to be squashed, but even these rough patches felt like tiny desert mice next to the leviathan shai-huluds that are this survival game’s wonderful successes.

As somebody who loves survival-crafting games and the world of Dune, I am still getting hours of entertainment out of Dune: Awakening. With the updates that it’s currently receiving and maybe some bigger content patches in the future, I think that it can turn into a polished homage to the world of Dune, perfect not only for fans of the franchise but also for fans who simply want to try a new survival-crafting title. It’s especially fun to play with friends, but it can feel lonely if you pick a random server without others. Like any game, your experience will vary, but I’m glad that I was able to play around in Arrakis, and I’ll be returning to be eaten by sandworms again.

Dune: Awakening certainly falls short when it comes to the endgame, but it more than makes up for it with the hundreds of hours you'll get out of it before then, as long as you're taking your time to see the sights.

Overall I do really enjoy Dune: Awakening, and while I still think the fact that it’s always online takes away from what it could be a bit, it doesn’t bring it down so far as to being unenjoyable. The framework is very positive and I had fun with my time in the game. I am intending to continue playing after writing this review, so I know it’s definitely good. I would recommend it to anyone who already knows and enjoys the world of Dune, but am not so sure people who aren’t otherwise would have the same ease of drop-in enjoyment I’ve gotten. It is one of the few games on the recent pattern of releasing at a lower price than average, so you can pick it up for only $50 if you’re wanting to try it! Dune fans, get in on it: you will enjoy it.

Melee feels stiff, stealth is undercooked, and the flow of encounters doesn't always match the scale or intensity the rest of the game sets up. But even with that in mind, there's still something satisfying about building your own identity on a planet that feels as dangerous as it does alive. Dune: Awakening isn't perfect, but it's confident in its vision, and that makes all the difference.

Excellent content pacing meets an increasingly demanding grind. Many of the game’s systems – from sandworms and personal shields to stillsuits, vehicles, and the harsh environment – will delight hardcore Dune fans, but concessions made for the online format chip away at the carefully built immersion. The world can be breathtaking, though its finer details often fall short. The opening hours are bafflingly weak, while what follows becomes dangerously addictive. The latest Dune game is, at its core, a story of contradictions.

I imagine most players will quit shortly after having completed Dune: Awakening's main story and arriving at the Deep Desert. But that doesn't mean all the hours prior to reaching the endgame aren't worth experiencing or aren't enjoyable. Funcom has turned Herbert's legendary sci-fi planet of Arrakis into a captivating video game setting. Part story-driven RPG, MMO, survival base-builder, sci-fi helicopter simulator, and third-person shooter, Dune: Awakening is a multi-headed hydra of experiences that, somehow, coalesces into a largely satisfying whole. While it suffers from a serious lack of variety when it comes to enemies and activities, and its endgame as of writing is a largely pointless endeavor with no real goal to strive for, Dune: Awakening nonetheless succeeds at bringing the universe of Dune to life in a way never before seen. When the Spice is flowing, it's easy to lose oneself to the rhythms of Dune: Awakening's desert for hours at a time. Just take care not to attract Shai-Hulud.

Dune Awakening isn't a typical survival game. Where most games in the genre focus only on surviving or escaping, Funcom goes further. The game offers deep immersion in a legendary universe, a satisfying power curve, a team-based endgame, and PvP with real strategic potential. But this ambition comes with flaws. The experience is still rough in places. The UI is clunky, the AI is weak, and combat lacks fluidity. Some systems shine while others need polish. Dune Awakening won’t suit everyone. Its slow start and demanding design might turn off some players. But those who embrace its rhythm will find a tough, generous sandbox. And like Conan Exiles, it's a game meant to grow over time.

Ride a motorbike across the sand with a worm biting your bum, fly your own ornithopter high in the sky, set down a combine harvester to collect spices. There's so much to do here even though it's all sand. Anakin Skywalker would hate it here.

Engaging with Dune: Awakening often feels like being in a relationship with someone deeply volatile. There's an undeniable allure, something about it can fully draw you in and make the experience almost intoxicating. But then, like clockwork, come the unpredictable explosion moments of inexplicable frustration where you're left feeling punished for things beyond your control.

The atmosphere, music, landscapes, and an excellent job preserving the original texts alongside the board games are the standout strengths of this MMO. With a simple gameplay system that checks all the boxes for current-generation titles, it offers a more than acceptable experience when it comes to enjoying a space-time adventure that deviates from the original storyline.

Dune: Awakening builds on the solid foundation of Survival gameplay mechanics from Funcom’s prior entry in the genre, Conan Exiles. While aspects of the game, such as combat and questing, are less than great, these flaws don’t prevent players from enjoying the well-executed gathering, crafting and research-advancing progression loop, as well as simply existing in and exploring the world of Arrakis. Those who love survival games OR the Dune franchise will likely have a great time here, though others may have less reason to stick around to the endgame. The solo and group gameplay is distinct from one another, but either approach will allow you plenty of fun time in the sun, the sand, and (if you’re unlucky) the belly of a sandworm.

There is still a lot to like about Dune: Awakening, and it is an experience that is improved by teaming up with friends. If you aren't a big fan of Dune, you might ironically get more out of this game than someone who is, since you won't have to worry about it not living up to your expectations. While I can't help but be a little disappointed in the final product, Dune: Awakening is still worth playing if you are a fan of the survival genre and want to experience its unique location.

Survival game fans will no doubt appreciate the level of polish in the design of its systems and the fun gameplay loop of shooting, looting, and crafting to make yourself stronger, but it doesn’t do much to iterate on expected genre convention. It’s also marred by intermittent technical hiccups and some less-than-stellar interface choices, but I still couldn’t stop myself from sinking more and more of my time into it. It’s a fun foundation that still needs a bit of TLC, in other words, and I hope to see Funcom eventually deliver the best version of what this take on Dune could become.

Dune: Awakening might just be one of the most challenging, difficult, and entertaining survival games I’ve ever played, with the survival aspect standing out head and shoulders above the rest. However, the combat, story, repetitiveness, and the sheer number of bugs are genuinely disappointing. Still, if you're a fan of the Dune universe or simply love survival games, Dune: Awakening is a must-play.

Dune: Awakening is a story of eternal change. In a year, it won't be the same game it is today. At the present, it has plenty of untapped potential and great ideas, none of which work together. One day, that will change, but we can't review potential. In a way, such contradictions are only fitting for this franchise, even if it's a frustrating experience to actually play.

Dune: Awakening is a game that Dune fans will find rapturous but that has a lot of small annoyances that mar it for players who aren't as engaged in the franchise. A solid but not world changing adaptation of a legendary sci-fi series.
