    This game is super great if you've played through other visual novels - it appears super typical at the outset, but the direction the game takes is unexpected and done super well.

    This game is the surprise game of 2017 to me. I'm a big fan of VNs, but its hard to find ones I actually like. The music, atmosphere, and characters set the scene for an unnerving and disturbing experience. You don't have to be a weeabo to play this game, trust me.

    It's free on Steam so go play it. But please don't play this game if you're suffering from depression or any mental health issues!     And that was that you can't go after any of the girls, besides Monika, and get a happy ending.

    This is one of those games you don't read anything about before playing, you just hop right in. It is beautifully crafted and is very unique in its story. I can't say much else without a spoiler tag so give it a shot!

Да, сюжет не голливудский, но на достаточном уровне. Приятная ламповая атмосфера (не всегда, иногда она реально напряжная), интересные герои. Моды позволяют увидеть многое, что утаили от нас разработчики в оригинале.

    What can I say? This game is possibly the oddest game I've ever played but it so damn good. There are parts that are a bit boring but it gets really good. The plot twists regarding the different characters are amazing and the way the game interacts with your computer is so different and I've never played something like this. Overall, I'd give it a 9.0.

    Apesar do início maçante, o enredo se desenrola muito bem no ato 2 e se torna muito coerente e bem escrito, além de ter vários plot twists. Os personagens são bem feitos e o traço é bonito.

    Não recomendo para crianças e pessoas facilmente deturpadas, mas se você não tiver nenhum problema com isso, jogue. 9!

    This game is way lot better with tough decisions than Life Is Strange for example, that is another awesome game.

    I has a long time that I finished a game and keep thinking about everything that happened for days. This game really got me, like it got everyone else.

    It's incredible how a simple and free game can be awesome.

    Doki Doki Literature Club is of the type of games i usually don't play on PC, But this one was the exception. And it did not disappoint. The Graphics is on par with what this game seems to be at the surface. But just as you should not judge a book by its cover, you should not judge this game by what it seems like at first. It will take that wrong turn multiple times, and show you some of the darker aspects of human mental states.
    The narrative plays a big part in this game and it was done flawlessly.
    The plot will make you disturbed at some moments and sad at other turns, or it will simply mess with your mental state. The Technical part of the game is impressive, how the game deletes files and keeps running seemingly all bugged. Even more impressive on steam, as the script is kinda doing what malware would do. I will end this by saying this. Listen to the warning the game gives you before you start a new game, it might be beneficial to your mental health.    … Expand

I really had a hard time to get into it at the beginning but these girls (Monika, Yuki, Satori and Natsuki) are truly endearing and lovable without being indecent nor overly sexy.

It is hard describing 'Doki Doki' without having to spoil the content so I'll make this review short: if you want to read a short but truly engaging visual novel this one is for you.     I give this game a 9, because I like its concept, and it's surprisingly well made for such a small team of developers: the creator and two hired artists (characters and backgrounds).

    The charm of the game doesn't come directly from its genre (dating sim/visual novel) but from the overall plot, the music and the liberal (and intelligent) use of graphical and sound effects to craft and    I give this game a 9, because I like its concept, and it's surprisingly well made for such a small team of developers: the creator and two hired artists (characters and backgrounds).

    The charm of the game doesn't come directly from its genre (dating sim/visual novel) but from the overall plot, the music and the liberal (and intelligent) use of graphical and sound effects to craft and change the atmosphere on a whim. What I found genius about the game was the use of poetry to portray the feelings of the characters, which from a dating sim standpoint is a smart idea. Poetry is definitely a theme of the game, and it's a well executed one.

    There are many secrets that DDLC hides from you, like the fact that is has a hidden genre, one that's hinted at by the warning message at the start the game: "This game is not suitable for children or those who are easily disturbed", but that's all I can say without going into spoilers.

    Overall, It's a short game (5-6 hours long) and it's free, I highly recommend anyone to play this game alone, at night, in the dark...    … Expand

    This is the best visual novel that i ever played! I won’t lie, the first couple hours are a bit boring but it’s still ok.. after that, the story gets really intense and frightening.DDLC is an awesome horror game that really messed with my head a little...It’s definitely worth playing.

    At the first sight, we have a boring visual novel with generic characters (the leader, the tsundere etc) but everything change with Sayori's death. With his suicide and the background we understand that the game is not a boring visual novel but something, something more terrible.
    In the second act, Monika start to become omnimous and the really fun start here. The game start to don't give a f*** with the fourth wall and break it reguliary. the character start to act weirdly and Monika gonna tries everything to be with you. I not gonna talk more about the story but the story is just Amazing
    I really recommend the game, play it and after that why not testing some mods ?    … Expand

This short story packs a punch and has nice elements of moe culture. I wished there was a bit more lore to the whole story, yet almost perfect for what it wanted to deliver.     It’s not that time consuming but while playing you’ll get lost in time, it’s very enveloping (just make sure to save the game so that you won’t lose any progress).

W przeciwieństwie ode mnie. Mój kolega pewnego dnia powiedział: "Hej stary, widziałeś tą nową fajną gre anime?" I tak to się wszystko zaczeło. Wszedłem, pobrałem uruchomiłem, zagrałem...I przeżyłem szok. Na początku myślałem " O wow fajna mechanika pisania wierszy". No a po jakimś czasie.. Jeb Sayori wisi. To był ten moment. Po przejściu tej gry czuje się emocjoalnie związanym z każdą bohaterką. Piękność tej gry nie leży w fabule, BA nie leży nawet w straszności tej gry. Piękność tej gry leży w systemach i pomysłach. Świetny jest np. pomysł z plikami, pomysł z tym że gra DOSŁOWNIE się rozpada od wewnątrz ( Tzn.Pliki podczas drugiego aktu, gdzie wszystko oficjalnie się pierniczy wyskakują glicze i gra realnie psuje i usuwa pliki tej gry) I do tego ta fabuła ukryta pod dekodowaniem, szyfrowaniem i buszowaniem po plikach. Wydaje mi się że człowiek siadający do tej gry wiedząc że jest horrorem psychologicznym nie ma takiego wrażenia po przejściu gra jak ja. I ta muzyka końcowa... Coś pięknieo.     When I first saw this game on Steam, I genuinely though the "Psychological Horror" tag was just people abusing the system. Given the game's positive reception, its catchy cover and popularity, I decided to give it a go. After reading the reviews and being 2 hours in, I actually feared what might come next. I've never been so apprehensive about finishing a game due to its shocking nature. And sure enough, this game truly is disturbing, even if you prepare yourself for the worst. But it's impossible to keep the game's depth a secret when that makes up 90% of the appeal. So why am I giving this a positive review?

    Well, the game breaks the fourth wall like no other. I encourage you to play this game in windowed mode and after about 2 hours in, open your steamappscommonDoki Doki Literature Clubcharacters directory. These are real files with a different extension (one is a PNG, another is Base64 encoded message etc.).The game itself, written in Python2, actually changes the files (and not just those in that folder) as you play, which makes it feel truly real.

    But that's just some gimmick, right? Anyone could do that, it'sn ot the most creative idea. So, again, why am I giving this game a positive review? Especially after the ending it gave me. I assure I was most certainly NOT impressed. It left me more upset with the game and the writers' decision to end it like that, so much so that the shock factor was outweighed by my dismay of how it all happened. But you realise that's not all this game has to give.

    What truly sets DDLC apart is that it serves a much deeper purpose than your ordinary game. As a visual novel, this genre has very limited interactivity, and despite my inexperience with VNs, I've always wondered what the purpose of them is compared to an eBook. Yet Doki Doki Literature Club makes the best possible use of the medium. Simply put, it is a tool to raise awareness of mental health issues. It truly creates a sense of empathy that cannot be expressed in any other medium. As you "read" through DDLC, you begin to get a sense of how truly horrible loneliness and depression must be. You start to feel bad yourself. Then you wonder how it must feel like to live with this. Even if you can relate to some of the themes explored in DDLC, you begin to realise just how deep they can go. It's frightening, concerning, yet what makes it so impactful is that this is not a joke. Yes, it is taken to the extreme. But it's absolutely real. These things do happen, and even if extreme cases are not so common, even milder issues must be... just awful.

    So, despite the sadness, this game serves not only as an educational tool but also an inspiration. An inspiration to care more about those around you, and yourself of course, if you can relate to any of the characters. It makes you want to hug not only your friends and relatives but even strangers. It's one of those experiences that will stay with you. Depending on your personality, it may be haunting and you'll regret having beared witness to such tragedies. But to others, it may be a valuable learning experience    … Expand

    This game touches on a lot of issues that I find very important to make media about in a very interesting and unique way. It also has a great OST, and there's little secrets hidden everywhere that add to the main theme of the game. VERY worthy of it's praise.

    This game for me defies easy definition without giving anything away, but it is great, and disturbing at the same time. If you're easily prone to panic attacks it can easily throw you into one. It did for me!

I love how it subverts your expectations by being a psychological horror instead of a cute anime dating simulator. I remember watching a playthrough of it in school (although I shouldn't have) in 9th grace by a YouTuber named Joshiball since my friends were talking about it and it was interesting to me. Seeing Sayori's death scared the living crap out of me as a 15-year-old struggling with OCD. I mean that messed with me for the rest of the day when I first saw it. I hated this game for months afterwards. Eventually I exposed myself to the image of Sayori hanging more and more, and now it doesn't bug me so much. As a result of this game, I now really like horror as a genre, whereas before I was always scared of it. The best thing about it is how it portrays mental illnesses and gives warning signs for them. I replayed it recently and unfortunately it wasn't scary to me at that point, most likely because I already knew everything that was going to happen. In addition, it takes quite a bit for it to get going in the first act. Despite its flaws, I love this game, as it has helped shape me into the person I am today.… Expand

    Another point is its interaction. There is a whole part that the player can have a talk with one the of roles. (really talk, not the script)
    I always think that galgames are usually laugh, a bit sad and laugh. But this work changed my mind (maybe just I do not play much, and I felt a bit pain when I finished the first chapter actually).
    For its background, the poets (I think they are) have strong personal emotions. This makes this game more realistic. Under these circumstances, these four roles get together created this complex and defective home called “literature”. That is why they need an “outsider” and why they need a “player”.

    I admit I had the first shocking moment spoiled for me on a Let's Play but it shocked me just as much as the one who was playing. I had to play it myself to see the rest and see what it was going.

    I guessed off that Monika was behind all the creepy stuff but wanted to know why and how. I was kind of lost at the point where you are suppose to erase a file since I'm not a hardcore PC gamer.

    I like how it ended where Monika realizes why the player deletes her seeing all the wrong she did to get someone she loved and tries to make amends. Not sure about what happens after but the song in the credits was nice.

    Overall, it's I big surprise for everyone who loves dating sims, secret horror and Undertale 4th wall breaking twists.    … Expand

    In my 20 years of experience playing games I can ashure you, there has`nt been a single one that has make me feel such a mix of emotions ass this game, Hearthwarm, fea, joy, sadnes...

    1)its short and the even the best ending is not satisfying (if you didn't knew the game has a few endings)
    2)the story is too slow and it takes 2 hours to get to the main point

The fact that almost everything is made to seem like a visual novel and make the horror elements be with the visual novel theme is the genius behind it. Differing clues in smart details like the poems or small bits of dialogue helps convoy the scares and elements of the game. People say that it being a visual novel is it's downside but it works as a way to spread fear and scares in a new fashion.     I'm not gonna spoil you anything, but the last 3 hours of gameplay or so are extremely intense, and quite disturbing. They're the jewel of the game, but not a very polished one. Some resources feel overused and make the game's message quite messy to be understood, but still, that's a hard thing to avoid when playing with meta-knowledge.

    My biggest issue with the game, however, is how your choices don't really matter in the long run. Depending on what you say and on what you write in your poems, you're gonna get some different instantaneous feedback. But that's it. The games ending is almost unaltered regardless of what your decisions are.

    Well... there are also a few more points, both positive negative, but I think this sets the picture correctly. Here is a summary of the pros and cons.

    Pros:
    * It's a very surprising, deep and unique experience
    * The characters have interesting personalities
    * The literary work present in this game is both useful and expressive, giving a lot more meaning to the story
    * The first hours of gameplay do a great job at world-building
    * The game is 100% free but feels complete nonetheless

    Neutral
    * The game is quite short (5 hours in duration)
    * The soundtrack is okay
    * The graphics are pretty, but it'd be great to have more images

    Negative:
    * You can't change things meaningfully
    * It's hard to explore what-if scenarios because your save files get automatically deleted after key events
    * The game's message gets quite distorted because it's complicated to deal with meta-knowledge

My problem with the game, is it's pacing towards "the twist" My problem boils down to this. Unless you can bear the pain and uncomparable amount of human patience to get to the twist, i.e being a fan of visual novels, then your going to just want to skip dialogue so "the twist" can come quicker. The only sort of interactive gameplay it has before "the twist" is writing poems with vague themes. You don't really type in these sections. You just point and click on twenty themes that you think, will make an interesting poem.

    *SPOILER WARNING* (in case you ignored the first one)
    In this twist I was mentioning earlier, one of the girls (Sayori) commits suicide. And the setup is perfect! Your in the middle of a love story along the lines of "No. I-I do love you! I love you alot!" But just when our hero thinks he's going to fall in love. He opens his lovers door... And out of nowhere a jpeg of Sayori hanging herself appears! With unsettling music to accompany it. This is genius because it comes out of nowhere and, go's completely unexpected! After that, your character starts cussing and shuddering, trying to digest what's in front of his eyes. Sadly though, this moment is short lived as, after this part, the game tries to pull a ticket from Undertale, Earthbound and Yume Nikki and acts all "glitchy" and "broken" The problem with this though, is that this concept was doomed from the start. It had an interesting wind up but the punch, was a mosquito bite. You see, it worked in those games because, the gameplay or what you were experiencing was amusing, and then the twist came which made you think from "I like this game" to "HOLY **** WHAT THE **** IS THAT!? I LOVE THIS GAME!" You can only go so far with a visual novel. Since there's no game-play to begin with, all it can really do is just show moving images instead of static ones. And the biggest disappointment was the final boss with Monika (if you can even call it that) Monika has taken full control of the game, and for once, this really does make you feel like your in danger. Even though there's just a static image of Monika with text. It's mesmerizing! But once again, the game wanted to be Undertale, Earthbound and Yume Nikki and tried to break the fourth wall in a creepy way. Instead of making the player creatively think, what they can do from bits of dialogue or, visual cue's to make you go "What if I..?" Monika basically cock teases you and tells you how to beat her and then says afterwards "P-Please d-don't do that Senpai!" You know I would've preferred it if Monika or any other character in the game, tapped me in the nuts, rather than jump out of the screen and suck my dick. I mean, isn't Monika suppose to be the "antagonist" of the game? She's suppose to challenge the player, not tell them their weakness'.

    But for a free game on steam, it's more than deserving to be in your library. I respect this game for trying something new. Even though is didn't come out as great as it should've.

    That is why I think, you should play Doki Doki Literature Club.

Yo jugué este juego por q me lo recomendó un amigo, al ver el juego no me llamo la atención, pero decidí darle una oportunidad, al principio fue como me lo esperaba, un aburrido juego de citas con una trama romántica (ese tipo de historias no me gustan en general) y era una novela grafica (odio ese tipo de juegos por su jugabilidad, es muy cerrada) hasta q después vi unos diálogos muy extraños de monika, y eso no fue todo, ya q la trama dio un giro q yo no me esperaba, sayori se suicido, después de eso empezaron a pasar cosas raras en el juego, y llevó a un punto q yo me llegue a asustar, a diferencia de otros juegos "survival horror" o del genero de terror este dio un miedo psicológico y un suspenso increíbles, después yuri se suicidó y natsuki fue borrada, y aquí conocí a la villana del juego, era monika, q rompió la cuarta pared de una forma muy sorprendente, y tenia q desacerme de ella de una forma muy original, claro ella no era mala del todo, solo q los desarrolladores no crearon una "ruta" para ella, al igual q este final (q me recuerda a la trama de los juegos portal) y sus otros finales me sorprendieron mucho, y el juego termino gustándome, en pocas palabras, "no juzgues un libro por su portada"… Expand

Неумение отличить любовь от привязанности или дружбы, а то и пагубной зависимости; невозможность пересилить себя, чтобы отпустить того, кого ты любишь. Мне выпала концовка, в которой Моника удаляет всю игру, по сути, сознаваясь в том, что она не любит героя (меня), ведь готова уничтожить всё, даже себя, чтобы не чувствовать страдание. Это вызывает одновременно и сочувствие и неприязнь, но... Здесь уж вступают в силу философичные рассуждения: что такое любовь, как пережить пик страдания - уничтожить всё? Стоит ещё порассуждать о том, что игра-то знает, что она игра, но это всё равно, как всегда, рассуждение о человеке. И конец - он как приговор: мы, люди, не умеем любить, не вторгаясь в автономию другого человека, руководствуясь при этом политикой физического и эмоционального захвата; мы скорее всё уничтожим, весь мир, чтобы избежать собственного страдания, была бы только возможность.
    Ладно уж, ладно. Есть ещё о чём поговорить, но основное я сказал. Упомяну ещё интересную фишку, которую я раньше никогда не встречал - она меня очень-очень удивила: чтобы продвигаться дальше по сюжету, нужно будет покопаться в папке с файлами игры. Пускай этому уделяешь всего с минуту, но этот выход за рамки - в папку с файлами - произвёл на меня впечатление.

    i had a good time with Doki Doki literature club, despite it being a predictable mess at times, it has some good scares,while some of it is just plain laughable ,if your looking for a good laugh, or a good scare . this will serve you well for both all wrapped in a little clever package, just dont expect anything groundbreaking

As the game goes on, many of the clichés and tropes are explained through dark and intimate themes which develop into 4th wall breaking mechanics that make you feel more personally connected with the characters.

It starts out with a great twist and the game changes to a more surreal experience that wants to screw with the player while also providing unique commentary and satire on the romance/dating simulator genre as a whole. The first half needs to be that bad so the second one can be as impactful as it and that ending is something special (the need to delete Monika's character from the game files, another great aspect of this game).… Expand

I like the basic idea: an innocent visual novel suddenly turning into a bizarre horror. After the turning point unexpected and wicked things happen.     Even after getting spoiled by a friend of mine, it was still one hell of an experience. Game really screws you mentally. The first few hours were quite boring though.

    The meta fourth wall breaking is unique and the music & presentation are dope. Drags on for just a little bit too long unfortunately. Not hugely scary but definitely super dark as soon as you get to around the half-way mark. Crazy amount of secrets and Easter eggs all throughout this game which are impressive but still don't make playing the actual game any more entertaining.

    미연시라는 장르의 자기 패러디다. 뻔하고 공식화된 캐릭터들과 스토리 전개가 결국 전부 패러디를 위한 장치었음을 뒤늦게 깨닫는다. 그래서 로맨스 대사들은 심히 유치하고 오글거리지만, 제대로 쓴 대사들과 시는 소름 끼치게 깊다. 게임이 막바지에 네번째 벽을 넘는데 그 방식이 독창적이다. 그리고 얼핏 보기엔 대충 만든 저예산 게임같지만 곳곳에 숨겨진 복선들과 이스터에그가 꽤 창의적이다. 완성도 높은 게임이라고 생각하진 않지만 상당히 참신한 실험이다.

    그런데 아무리 미연시라지만 오글거리는 대사를 조금만 더 현실적이게 써줬다면 캐릭터가 얼마나 더 공감됐을까. 미연시나 비주얼 노벨이 취향인 사람은 별 문제 없겠지만 그게 아닌 사람에겐 반전이 드러나기까지의 과정이 너무 지루하다. (단순히 소설을 읽는 것과도 다른 게, 이런 비주얼 노벨은 일반적인 소설에서 간단히 묘사하거나 생략할 상황까지 전부 대화록으로 장황하게 처리한다. 미연시와 야동에만 존재하는 멍청하고 순종적인 소녀들은 덤.) 그리고 게임의 길이를 조금만 단축했어도 패러디가 충분하지 않았을까 싶다. 본격적으로 분위기를 반전시킨 Act 2부터라도 조금 단축해서 긴장을 좀 더 빠르게 고조시켰다면. 중간의 "그 장면" 때 순식간에 소름 돋았는데 결국 똑같이 한없는 대화록 읽고 클릭질하는 통에 있던 긴장감도 다 식었다. 원래 미연시가 다 이런 식인지 모르겠는데, 어쩜 이렇게 똑같은 말을 조금씩 다르게 반복하는지 대단할 따름이다. 이 게임 작가는 보고서를 많이 써 본 거 같다.

    Not so much of a horror as other might tell you but it touches upon the real issues and expands them up to a dramatic but real point.     Cute lil game with a neat surprise. Don't read any spoilers on it before playing it, and don't judge it too hard before you're at least about half an hour into it.

В любом случае, если это ваша первая игра манипулирующая прорывом сквозь 4-ю стену, обманутом ожидании и нарочистом удалении файла главной антагонистки (с последующем сохранением его у себя на флешке/диске/вибродилдаке/прочем носителе, дабы беречь его под подушкой питаясь влажными мечтами), то это будет приятное впечатление оставшееся с вами на всю жизнь. Three girls are into you for no reason at all (the explanation they give at the end do not justify 6hrs of that bs).     Saya No Uta, Muv Luv, are way, way, way better than this. Even a 12 years old edgelord writes better than Dan Salvato.

    Pretty boring. I decided to play after an Everlasting Summer, but in terms of the quality of the text, this game is not even close

    Ugh where to begin. This "game" has a lot of reading, no real gameplay, choices that don't really matter. I know it's an interactive novel, but at least Ace Attorney: Phoenix Wright has puzzles and far more interesting stories.

    Doki Doki Literature Club is a mind boggling and hard hitting horror game that takes tried and tested formulas of both visual novels and dating sims and turns them on their heads. The themes and story pack a punch, and stayed with me long after I had finished playing. It may require commitment from some to get through but the reward for those who stick it is more than worth it

    A horror game disguised as a dating sim. First couple of hours are boring and written poorly to the degree of being hard to digest for me, then things get better, but the story is still shallow and the substance plays second fiddle to the form. [01/2018, p.61]
