I have no idea what is with the high scores. The killer of this game is turn based combat. For a genre that is based on a fantasy setting and rpg style, the story should be told at a pace that is immersive. My life is faster paced than this. The combat is not that interesting either, hated the loot due to the distinct lack of explorable sites and random useless items, hated the magic system due to having to collect ****ing books to learn one (really, should you be playing a game where you keep alt+tab'ing to see where to find **** that is ESSENTIAL for your characters). Besides the main story line itself is too short but you have to player hours and hours until yours eyes bleed to get a single step on.

Examples of good RPG in fantasy setting that has very good and immersive story and rightly paced: Neverwinter Nights 2, Witcher 2 and 3 etc.

Examples of insufferable bad storylined games that are slow paced and relies on annoying side quests instead of their short main quests: This **** Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Skyrim etc.

Elemental effects in the environment figure prominently, and are of utmost tactical importance. Rain, water, oil, fire, heat, cold, poison, clouds, lightning -- they are present in spells, in arrows, in weapons, in the environment. A lot of thought went into the elements of combat and it makes for a stimulating and satisfying experience.

Hit your fire elemental enemies with a rain storm, which weakens them. Now that they're wet and weak and unlikely to set your own comrades ablaze, move in and follow up with freezing spells to take them out of the action for a couple of turns. It's a lot of fun figuring out the best way to turn the environment against your enemies.

The character system is part WoW and part Fallout. You get character attributes, abilities, and talents. Everyone is familiar with character attributes. Abilities are skills that you may level, like talents in WoW. Abilities can be leveled up to 5. Talents are like traits or single-rank perks in Fallout. You either have a talent or you don't -- there are no levels. It's a fair and engaging system with plenty of room for refinement.

There are a few things about the game that get on my nerves, though. I'm early in and the story seems a tad weird, even for a fantasy game. The map could use some love. Inventory management and crafting are inferior to WoW, although I admit they are better than Skyrim (but not by much). I also think the game should always auto-save prior to entering combat. Despite these drawbacks, I'm still giving the game at 10 because combat, magic, weapons, and environment are so well done. Also, the game is stable and not buggy. It's almost sad that I have to include that.

If you love RPGs, get this game. You won't regret it, especially if you've been disappointed by the current trends in RPGs with boring combat systems (I'm talking about you, Diablo III!)

I have played 25 hours so far and has only scratched the surface. I hope Larian studios begin work on an expansion soon.

And there there is the editor. I think we will see a huge amount of mods for this game. It might very well be the successor of Neverwinter nights in this regard.

    So much awesomeness!

    1. crafting system is absurd.
    2. story-line is really boring.
    3. ranged is favored.
    4. some abilities and attributes aren't worth the levels.

The rest of the game is good. Lots of replayability but I can't seem to do it a 2nd time considering how boring the story was.

As far as my review of the game goes I really only have good things to say. Its an incredibly engrossing world, with interesting stories and interesting characters, that keeps you wanting to play; NOT through cheap tactics like we see in Diablo clones, MMO's, or other gear-treadmill/unlocks type shenanigans, but because of genuine desire.
I know, I know, how can I not find anything wrong? That's impossible right? Wrong. Honestly, Ive not experienced any bugs or crashes of any sort in the short 40 hours I have spent in-game so far. The game was ready to come out of Early Access. (FYI the devs have not stopped to rest and have been hot on the case post release, with updates and fixes).
Who knows, maybe I'm unable to be critical because I've been totally enchanted by it all. Jumping from a solo play-thru to a co-op play-thru (on 2 separate profiles, and I've nowhere near finished the game on either) I am pleased with both, and we only have more to look forward to in the form of developer content and player created mods.
I highly recommend Divinity: Original Sin to lovers of authentic cRPG's with intelligent design, or if you just fancy trying something new to you, this is a great place to start!
    Thanks for reading :)

An outstanding part of this game is the interaction with the environment. You can make it rain and electrocute enemies who are standing in a puddle. Or teleport an enemy into lava.

The most important part about this game is that it rewards exploration. To all those game developers who think it's fun to run from quest marker to quest marker, take a good look at this game. This is how it should be. You only have an idea where you need to go. The rest you have to discover yourself. And when you do, it's freaking awesome. That's what exploration is about, set out into the unknown and be in awe of what you find along the way. Good or bad.

It IS a decent game, but it's marred by some serious flaws resulting from some poor design choices. Given the fact that there were apparently 20,000 kickstarter backers, it's strange that these obvious issues are still in the final release.

    The good:
    - It's a party-based CRPG with turn-based combat.
    - Nice twist on the genre, with an interesting mix of elemental effects that complement each other. Oil burns; water puts out fires but creates steam; water conducts electricity etc. This adds a whole new element to combat, elevating it beyond the more traditional "ice monster = fire attack".
    - There's various moments that require role-playing, where your two (main) characters can express their opinion and influence their character traits. Different traits can give you distinctive perks when high enough.
    - Overall it's great fun to play whenever you forget about the flaws (see below).

    The bad:
    - The game is actually very linear. Sure, you can explore areas outside the city that aren't part of the main storyline at the beginning, but only if you don't mind instadeath whenever you meet enemies.
    - The camera can only be rotated 90 degrees, which makes it really hard to see things obscured by the scenery or to target enemies. You can toggle between top-down and pseudo-isometric view, but that doesn't really solve the problem.
    - Targeting is extremely finicky and requires pixel-perfect precision. Move your mouse one pixel between targeting and clicking and your warrior will waste half their action points walking all the way around an enemy, while giving the enemy a free attack of opportunity in the process. Combine this with the limited camera and given how tough some of the combat is, this is EXTREMELY frustrating and can turn the tide of the battle.
    - Inventory management is poor, and the trade interface is a shining example of how not to design a game. Only ONE member of your party can trade at once. That nice new spell you wanted to buy for your mage? Turns out your mage is 4 gold short after adding all his loot to the barter screen. Want to add 4 gold from another character? No problem. All you need to do is leave the trade screen. Transfer the 4 gold to your mage, and the reinitiate trade and add all the items again. The most bizarrely frustrating and useless change to the tried-and-tested party based trade in every other CRPG ever. It makes the inventory management in the unpatched Jagged Alliance: Back in Action seem almost sane, and that was terrible. At least JA: BIA got a patch, AFAICT this isn't going to happen with D: OS.
    - Speaking of trading, another major annoyance is that trading is further complicated by virtue of the fact that irrespective of which character you have selected to trade with, gear in the shop is always compared to the gear worn by the character that initiated the conversation with the shopkeeper. Start conversation with your fighter, switch to your mage and then mouse over a robe, only to see that, yes, the robe isn't suited to your fighter. Solution: cancel and restart trade again. I can only assume that this is a bug... but it sure is annoying.
    - Lack of quest markers and lack of information on what you need to do next to advance the game. Yes you have a journal, no it isn't helpful. After pointlessly walking around town talking to everyone 192029 times, you'll find yourself reading the walkthroughs rather than wasting your time, which is always a pity.

In essence, if you like CRPGs and can look past some of the frustrating design flaws, you'll probably get your money's worth, just be aware that the game isn't flawless and isn't the best CRPG ever. The funny thing is that although this game gets called "old school" all the time, in many respects it's taken a step back; rather than adhering to tried-and-tested conventions, the devs seemed to feel it necessary to fix what wasn't broken - the result being that they broke it, which is to the detriment of the game. D:OS is however a good solid game and with a little more polish and care could even rub shoulders with some of the classics.

The battle system may be the best in any computer role playing game ever created. The combination of a full set of modern features, including attacks of opportunity, with an initiative / action point system, free movement and a highly polished user interface is a joy to play and strategize with.

However, what truly sets the game apart is the versatility in terms of player agency which it offers. Ideas which you might never even consider in other games, or which might not even be possible to attempt, are not only possible to execute but actually . This level of interactivity, combined with the very well developed system of elemental area effects and their interaction, allows for an almost infinite number of possibilities for solving situations, both in battles and during exploration.

I highly recommend this game to anyone who likes using their head while playing.

Congrats from Italy, Larian!

Awesome game, so great to see the Baldurs Gate/Ultima type RPG is still popular. This is a 'proper' roleplaying game, not just a combat-heavy, monster-grinding money-spinner!
Believable characters, wonderful sound and graphics and a great interface.
Hoping this means the start of many similar game in the near future :)

This game is on the top 10 list of my 30+ years of gaming. The intense care and attention to every detail, the level of freedom, the sheer amount of options you have to solve quests is mesmerizing. My only hope is that it will not finish quickly and there will be a lot of DLCs and mods. My hat is off to Larian Studios

I would say that all the 10/10 reviews out there are Kickstarter backers who want to help promote the game. The game is decent but no 10/10. If you liked Baldur's Gate, then you will probably enjoy this game too.

The elemental area of effect mechanic adds a lot of fun to the game. Cover an area with flammable poison ooze and then set it on fire to create an explosion. Then use a hostile teleport spell to throw enemies into the conflagration for good measure. Make sure you pick up a good spread of elemental abilities. Not only is it fun, the game assumes you have them at certain points.

The Rock, Paper, Scissors method of winning arguments with NPCs is stupid. It detracts from immersion in a big way. At one point I accused someone of doing something(no spoilers!). When I presented evidence to back up my case, we played Rock, Paper, Scissors to decide the argument. I'm not kidding or exaggerating, you actually do this several times in the game. If they wanted to randomize success when using Intimidate, Reason or Charm a hidden dice roll would have been less annoying.

The writing and dialog are pretty good, when the game has a chance to "warm-up". It is a little iffy early on; they dump a lot of weird useless story on you early in the game. At times your two main characters will have "discussions" where you role-play both sides. This is good if you want to role-play but silly if you just want to have an experience.

You will be frustrated by the interface, unless you are a sniper. There is no assistance to click on very small or moving objects. If your mouse is one pixel off, you don't select the monster/item. It is very frustrating when a monster shrugs so your attack command turns into a move.

Crafting exists but it is not explained very well. I haven't done any the whole game. You probably won't either.

All-in-all, this is not a bad game. Good for some nostalgia if you liked BG. Some bad design choices hold it back though. Worthwhile on a sale.

I expected this game as new revelation, I backed it up on Kickstarter, I was avidly watching developer diaries. Today, I finished the game.

    My thoughts?

First off, this game is something me and a lot of old school players were waiting for. We´ve finished Baldurs Gate many times, and we´re starved to death. No suprise we are ready to overlook caveats, and focus only whats good.

    We praise:

    1) Combat: it is complex, fun, turn-based. Working with elements and combining them is refreshing technique and is very well implemented. It is great fun and the main highlight of the game. But - continuous turn-based/realtime system in Baldurs Gate IS FAR SUPERIOR.

    2) Graphics, atmosphere. This depends on your taste, but the game is meticulously crafted, there is no deny. But, why do have to male protagonists look like STEROID BUFFED ANIMALS? They are literally looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his best years, even fragile wizards types! But, you can design your underwear. This game can be weird. Some call it humour, not me. The progression of your character´s visuals doesn´t work also. Remember how in BG you were looking like truly menacing wizard, after you´ve finally found that great robe? There is nothing like that in here, you look insignificant at the end same way as you were at the start (this applies mainly for wizards). A robe is robe, it has one look and that´s it.

    3) Music. Again, your taste. For me, its nowhere near Baldurs Gate 1 brilliance, but good enough to not be distractive.

    Blunders we overlook:

    1) Story: nothing to write home about. It is uninteresting at the start, it gets somewhat intriguing in the middle, only to finally become big letdown in the finale. Bottom line: if you want to make Baldurs Gate successor, you don´t have to make 2 of 4 protagonists ex-demigods. It´s worn idea of long gone novelty. As if this wasn´t enough, one of the companions just happens to be ex-king. Do writers thing that great story can come only through gods and kings? Come on.

    2) Useless features:
    - crafting is absolutely useless, it only makes your inventory clutter in epic way. Finding out what ingredients you need to combine is quite tiresome. You need to find books, get through blocks of irrelevant texts to realize you need to mix mushroom with stick to get something. It is so cumbersome that after I tried to make few things, I ditched it forever. It just is not worth the trouble. You find tons of items on the way, which are the same meh quality as the one you make, so why bother.

    - blacksmithing: see above, apart from making more junk, you must repair your weapons and armor. Is it fun? No. Is it tedious and superfluous? Yes.

    - lockpicking: this buffles me the most - lockpicking in Baldurs Gate was blast, you´ve found dozens of mysterious chest with great loot, you could burglar random people´s houses, so it was VERY WORTHWILE feature. Here? It is ABSOLUTELY useless, not even kidding. Every chest in this game can be opened with a key lying around. There are like 4 chests in THE WHOLE game, which actually require lockpicking.

    3) Loot
This game has really bad loot system, even worse than vanilla Diablo 3. The items are randomly generated, very often giving you heavy armor with intelligence bonus, wizards staff with strength bonus etc. It is annonying to kill bad ass boss only to be rewarded with this junk. Very often you will find yourself playing with lvl 15 characters, which wear 5 lvl items, because nothing better dropped for the last 15 hours of gameplay.

    4) Inventory and management
Do you remember how many inventory slots did we have in Baldurs Gate? 20? At max. It was great. You weren´t feeling like travelling gipsy wagon, you carried items that mattered. Here, you´ve got LIMITLESS inventory space, and believe me, there are moments when it almost feels it is not enough. So, be prepared to spare much of your time tidying up your inventory, rearranging hundreds of items which you won´t ever use. It really is not right when you feel like a clerk while playing a game.

    5) Puzzles
Most of the puzzles are unfair and uninspired. Either it is about pixel hunting small switches, or trying to follow instruction of some obscure guide you´ve found hours ago, granted that if you´ve kept it at the first place. You WILL be searching on the internet A LOT to get through. The teleport pyramid technique, although interesting at first, grows VERY INCONSISTENT later. In some situations it work, in some it doesn´t, you never know when, so you just try it all the time.....

    6) Dialogues and co-op
Co-op dialogues turns to save/load fest thanks to the stats you get if you answer "correctly". You will find yourself answering not how YOU would like to answer, but the way so your character gets some special bonus. Depending on what you choose, you become e.g. Romantic, which will get you +1 charisma, or Pragmatic +1 to intelligence, etc. Your decision are commanded by which class you play, not by your conscience.

My favorite CRPG from back in the day is Arcanum, and also I love the other top-rated RPGs (Baldur's Gate series, Fallout series, etc), but Original Sin has quickly become not only my GOTY, but one of my top 3 favorite RPGs of all time.

Everything from the turn-based combat with reactive environments; to the characters and humor and lore; to the exploration and immense satisfaction of completing areas . . . Original Sin is almost perfect.

The only real issue I have found is NPC chatter is somewhat repetitive and happens during conversations. That's it. I know Larian will fix that in a patch at some point though, so that's why Divinity gets a 10 from me.

Many of the things associated with oldskool are recreated, improved, even evolved. The attention to detail and the variety offered to the player more than make up for the few flaws, which are primarily interface frustrations, and could be patched. The tactical combat is the best of its type, the constant possibly of failure is back as the AI will use the landscape too and has access to a similar skillset as yours, which is itself more than satisfying to experiment with and learn, which you'll be encouraged to do, plus character customization actually encourages some roleplay choices both solo & coop.

This feels like the game we should've had 10 years ago, and should make Larian proud, and others drop to their knees and beg .... "how?".

Get it . Play it. If its not a future fondly remembered classic already, people will still be talking about it for sure.

    1. The sense of exploration. DOS is a rich world full of hidden treasures. For example you can get around 6000 gold worth of stuff from the Legion Warehouse that you encounter soon after beating the tutorial. It's near the burning ship. You will need to kill the legion guards (fight will be pretty hard) around the warehouse. You will also need Unlock Magic Door scroll (for some reason I had one, don't know how I got it but whatever!). Go in and you will find great equipment and plates that can be sold for a ton of money. Stuff like this just makes me so excited for a game.

    2. The combat is amazing. I just LOVE the combat. It's kind of like playing a game of Magic the Gathering, where you spend "mana" to cast spells, walk around, attack with your sword, etc. The magic system is well thought out, with elements interacting with one another. Fights are TOUGH and you will need to use tactics and your environment to your advantage.

    3. It's like reading a good novel. This game does a great job of immersing you into the world though dialogue.

    4. The game doesn't hold your hand. Quests are text only. You will have to listen to the dialogue and look at your journal to have a clue what the hell is going on.

    5. The music is really really good. All of my roommates have commented on how good the music is while I'm playing the game.

The cons of this game are only "inconveniences" that can be fixed in future patches like inventory management and some clunky controls. Seriously, the core game design itself is simply perfect. And I'm not trying to overhype this game, I think it deserves the hype and the glowing reviews.

Divinity: Original Sin was the RPG I've been waiting for...for a LONG time. I just want to put this out there really quickly, that I am an RPG veteran, dating back to the mid to late 80s, so I've had my fair share of CRPGs. Anyhoo...

Divinity: Original Sin is the prequel to the first Divine Divinity. Like the first game, I had no idea this one even existed. I had never heard of Larian Studios at the time of release for Divine Divinity, and happened to pick it up at Best Buy one day, and fell in love right away. The same happened with this game. Somehow, I never knew it was coming and just saw a Web ad one day and immediately downloaded it.

Character creation is very solid, and can be daunting for those who don't really like to get into too much detail (though not nearly as hardcore as a D&D game). You create two main characters, picking sex, face, portrait, hair, voice, starting skills, attributes, and 2 talents. Depending on what class you pick, these will all be pre-assigned, but you are free to modify and rearrange them if you wish. As the game progresses, you can build your character in anyway you choose, and either stay on the path you chose, or create a hybrid class. Hybrids will not be overpowered machines, but they can easily be viable and fun.

The story isn't anything extremely original, but it is engaging, especially if you've played the other games. Fans of Divine Divinity will get some chuckles out of Larian's usual humor or some old references, but you don't need to have played the other games to understand this one or enjoy what's going on. The NPC's do feel a bit one dimensional, and there isn't a lot of voice acting, but it's still engaging and there's some lore in books that you find. You can also make your characters argue with each other, and the dialogue options that you pick will alter personality traits, which in turn alter certain skills. This is quite useful to help beef up some skills without wasting valuable skill points.

Combat is turn based (which I love in an RPG), and does require some thought. Early on, you can't just go off and think you're going to steamroll everything (though towards the end you might be able to do so. I always found battles much easier as the game went on, save for boss battles). You can use objects and the elements to your advantage. Spill water on the ground, toss a lightning spell and electrocute/stun your foes! Great times! If you've played Fallout or Fallout 2, you'll kind of feel the combat system in there a bit, as everything is done with action points. The good news though is you can adjust combat difficulty at anytime, even during combat, if something is too hard and you don't want to wait to try it later when you're better prepared. Spells are quite fun, and there's a lot of useful ones. The only downside to this is that sometimes there are too many spells to deal with, and a lot of them become useless later on as you gain more powerful spells, but that's usually the case with most games.

For most modern day gamers, questing might be one thing to upset you. Be forewarned that this game isn't a hand holder like today; You will not get direction as to where to go or what to do. You will be given a few hints here and there, then the rest is up to you. There is a journal though that records quests and conversations so you can refer back if you forget what to do.

My only real gripe with the game is the rock-paper-scissors mini-game. It's fun at first, but it's completely random. Even if you seem to have more points per victory than the NPC you go up against, the computer always seems to win no matter what (maybe I just have bad luck). I rarely ever get a victory.

While most people seem to hate the camera angles, it doesn't bother me. I get enough of a zoom in or out, and am able to rotate the camera just fine. If you need a full top down view during combat, just press the "B" key (I believe that's the default)

The graphics are pretty and the world is large and lush. There are several large maps you will travel throughout the game. Those who played Divinity or Beyond Divinity will understand this, and probably relish in it. Just like Divine Divinity, monsters do not respawn during the game, and it isn't like Diablo where a whole new game starts every time you log in. The single player mode saves and stays in the same state. The level cap is somewhere in the 20's, so it's pretty short in terms of leveling, but there's enough content to keep you going for hours.

To sum it up, Divinity: Original Sin might not be for the faint of heart, or those with short attention spans. It does require quite a bit of thought and strategy, but the game has so much to offer. I'm hoping Larian takes it even further with mods, because there's so much more that can be done with this game. The story is good, the combat is good, and the puzzles are fun and challenging. I highly recommend this underrated gem.

The combat system is the absolute best part of this game. The story is engaging and the art style is beautify, but it is the diversity of combat scenarios and solutions that really sold it for me. The only negatives for me were the only average questing system and a few frustrating camera controls.

The world feels alive and exploring it brings you rewards in terms of loot, quests and even some easter eggs here and there. I spent perhaps 30 hours in game so far and I look forward to playing much more in the coming weeks. Quests are fun and clever, mostly there are more ways how to complete them and your actions have consequences that can be seen and felt.

There are however also still some bugs and a few areas might require some polish. I did not encounter any game breaking bugs at all though i saw some annoying glitches - being unable to pickup some loot I had to reload once. Good thing the game keeps several quicksave and autosave slots so i would not worry about savegame corruption. Personally i didn't encounter such issues. Also the "journal" which keeps track of your progress in quests tends to be a bit confusing which is also true for the list of possible teleportation locations. These are however just minor annoyances that can be hopefully fixed in future updates.

All that said, it would be a huge mistake to miss this game. It offers a lot of content and fun things to do (did i mention crafting your own gear? ), it has nice graphics and awesome music. Larian did an outstanding job and i hope they deliver us more games in the future.

Great interactive world with an internal logic that lets you try all sorts of approaches to problems. Really really steep learning curve. Seriously you will likely scrap your initial party and restart after playing a couple hours. Read some online hints to avoid it. If you're a hardcore player you'll probably love it. If you're used to more forgiving modern RPGs you're in for some frustration.

i think its great that you have to figure out your self what and how to do things, the game do not hold your hand much. and that is great. the world feels so alive. in real life, there is no tutorial there. you have to figure out where to go and what to do. when you completed a thing you never thought you would, that makes you feel great. dark souls is that way to. no more tutorial based games. hard, challenging, rewarding games is the best there is.

Baldur's Gate style meets the openness of Skyrim and complexity and lack of hand holding of Dark Souls. The ultimate compilation. After years of generic, simple, dunbed down cRPGs we're finally back to the good old "golden age" of the genre. If you enjoyed Planescape, BG, Icewind Dale etc. you will be happy to hear that there's more, and it's called Divinity: Original Sin.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Divinity: Original Sin reminds me of why I love games. For over twenty years I have been a passionate gamer, and Like many adult gamers, I often fondly look back at games and the experiences that will stick with me for life. The games I look back with on with nostalgia aren't perfect, and neither is Divinity: Original Sin, but that's not what makes gaming great. If you are a gamer you will understand that unexplainable feeling of excitement and charm that truly makes the game perfect in your eyes. This is what Divinity: Original Sin is to me.

    The Good:
    - Beautiful World
    - Tons of exploration
    - Great story (often comical)
    - Amazing combat (I hated turn based combat before this game, so don't let that stop you)
    - Large amount of content (I spent 30 hours on the first section of the game)
    - Obviously a labor of love for Larian (A game for gamers by gamers)

    The Bad
    - Very rare stability issues
    - muddy textures up close
    - minor bugs
    - Strange difficulty spikes

It should be said that this is not the casual gamers RPG. Divinity: Original Sin can be very challenging at times, especially on harder difficulties. Encounters may require multiple attempts and careful planning to overcome. The same can be said with the many environmental puzzles/secrets in the world. Finally, there is no quest guidance, you explore, discover, and complete without any "go here to complete quest" arrows. the difficulty and lack of hand holding is refreshing, and adds to the games value. Like I said before, Divinity: Original sin is not a perfect game, but it is truly rare gaming experience that should be experienced by every RPG fan out there.

D:OS does an amazing job with their skill system combined with the environmental dangers on the battlefield. I found wasn't doing well until I was utilizing the environment in almost every battle, and it is awesome.

Co-op games are so easy to set up! I had 0 issues getting my friend in my game and its fast every game. If I had one issue with the game it comes in this category though. Conversations started by one person is difficult and sometimes not observable by the other player. I want to see that amazing story too!

Are there bugs? Yes, but nothing gamebreaking and not many considering it just released. The one bug I kept encountering they fixed in one of their 4 small patches in 4 days anyways. I love knowing the devs won't wait forever to patch this game.

Just a handful of points mar a perfect score. There are still some bugs and unfinished bits here and there, which are disappointing. NPC banter is loud, repetitive and annoying. Some balancing issues exist, making a few character aspects or abilities too good. Nothing worth avoiding this gem of a game over, however!

Basically what the other ten reviewers said. Nice to have a game that makes you READ the quests to give clues where to go next. I've started to dislike having markers everywhere. Proper hardcore PC RPG unlike recent releases that were obviously made easier for the general console crowd. I have however knocked a point off for the poor inventory and slightly clumsy crafting.

Turn-based combat = great - I've missed this in RPGs, everyone wants real-time 3D, but this trumps a lot of game mechanics if you ask me
Graphics = good - running things on the highest settings possible without any hitches and it looks good for this type of game

Story = good- 3 days in and I'm still not sure what direction the story will take, which is a good thing for me

Voiced dialogue = overall quality is good, but the repetitive nature of some of the NPCs' scripts is torture

Written dialogue = good - think I've only seen one spelling error so far

Interactive environment = good - not quite to the degree I was expecting, but not bad

Stability = good - as noted, no game breaking bugs - way more stable than beta

Leveling = okay - I honestly don't know about this one yet, it seems a bit slow at the start, but now that I'm a few levels in it seems to be speeding up, which seems backwards to me

Game world = Considering how much content is crammed into the starting area, I have no idea since I haven't left there yet... I'm considering this a good thing though, as I can see you'll be able to jump around later on, which means you won't be limited to questing in a single area at a time

Crafting = Probably the one thing that bugs me the most, you need to invest in the ability to craft and early on you'll accumulate a lot of things you won't be able to do anything with; however, this means that you will really weigh the value of that next combat skill upgrade versus a crafting/blacksmithing upgrade - tons of replay value right there alone.

Overall this beats my expectations of an Kickstarter/Early Access game by quite a bit and since they're still working to improve it, I can't see a downside to owning it. The old school feel in a new skin is perfect, but just remember to save often, very often, and things should be okay.

Combat tends to be very messy if you don't have a strategy and is also pretty difficult, excepting the tutorial areas ofcourse. Also if the enemies are even 1 level higher than your party, you're likely to get your ass whooped, especially if you're fighting a group of such enemies.

Money is very easy to make in the game, as you can basically go into the rich people's mansions and robe them blind while you distract them with a party member and then switch to another and sneak around picking paintings off the walls and gold/silver stuff from around the house. It's easy to not get caught. Not to mention you will find some very good weapons and armor in some chests. I left the first town after I bought the best equipment that vendors had.

Melee characters seem to have the role of meatshields while the real damage and utility is possessed by wizards. It's probably very much possible to play an all wizard party with some summons to act as meatshields. Not sure I like that.

One thing I noticed is that the music is rehashed from other Larian games. Noticed music parts from Divine Divinity and Divinity 2.

If you play solo make sure to assign an AI personality to one of the two characters, usually the one you don't consider as playing your part, otherwise you're gonna have to manually select dialogue options for both characters and talking to yourself during dialogues is kinda weird. :D

The only thing which does upset me is the lack of an informative journal. Which is what made the older RPGs so great, studying your journal to find out what to do next was often one of the best experiences of the older RPGs, sadly this isn't present in D:OS. The vague journal can often leave you very puzzled and stuck, but still it doesn't detract from the overall experience of the game. The best thing is by far the combat. It's well done for turnbased, the elements and all their weaknesses and strengths definitely always leave you on the balls of your feet and make each fight unique and interesting. Using water spells to wet your enemies, followed by an electric spell to stun them is one of the few combinations you can use in combat to your advantage.

The graphics are amazing as well, especially for a kickstarter game, like holy **** It looks better than almost anything on Xbox One and PS4 at the moment and it's not even that technically impressive, it just looks really really good.

This does not at all; it's combat is brutally hard without the use of tactics and it gives you no indicator whatsoever where to go for your quests. Questing in it is far more akin to Baldur's Gate or Morrowind, and that's incredibly refreshing.

The dialog is funny and plentiful; it is not limited by having every single line voice acted. The systems it uses for combat are fairly intuitive if you have any experience with tabletop gaming. The quests are interesting. The world is interesting, and you can do more to manipulate it in the starting town then you can do for the entirety of the last 5 Bioware games you care to name.

Buy it if you love RPG's, get ready for a headache and being forced to re-examine how to play them if you love RPG's and are under 20 years old.

After drudging through DOS's heavily padded campaign, unlocking the "real" final, final boss, and beating it after a crash on Turn 30, this was all I could think. Divinity: Original Sin starts out beautifully by dropping you off in a large seaport town called Cyseal, the start of your murder mystery. The first dozen or so hours are gripping; not because the plot is particularly good, but because Cyseal feels like a handcrafted cRPG town of old, a gigantic playground for your heroes to explore. However, even within this first area, the game's problems start to rear their ugly heads.

The Journal system is almost useless. Quests are just dumped into your book with no filtering or sorting options besides being able to toggle visibility of completed quests. Two very important quests (one was required to continue the story and and another to unlock the "real" final boss fight) were lost in the list of tedious & ambiguous side quests that I picked up along the way. The Journal is also wildly inconsistent with how quests are followed and marked: some quests will drop markers for each part on your map, while others are so vague they will have one line of text saying "congrats! you did it!" with no indication of how to continue the quest. Too many times I had to go to Google just to figure out where I was supposed to go for a quest because the journal, local NPCs, and pocket portal friends were clueless or just too vague.

The plot, its pacing, and the gameplay's pacing are all terrible. Many parts of the game involve listening to long-winded NPCs tell you their life story so you can pick up a side quest from them that will simply unlock their store front (or something similarly unimportant). D:OS is overly compartmentalized; you can feel the devs saying "Okay, combat NOW! Okay, 5 hours of NPC chat NOW!" I don't have a problem with reading text in a RPG but D:OS often feels like NPCs are chatting just for the sake of chatting. The story is heavily padded with long, boring sequences that stray from any semblance of plot that the game tries to carry. Too many times I loaded up my saved game and thought "What am I even doing here? Where am I supposed to go? What does this have to do with the story?" The main story itself is godawful too, shoveling in every trope the devs can think of (ancient evils awakening, chosen heroes with amnesia, pandora's box, an evil church, an evil twin sister, etc.) that attempts to twist and turn through a series of often predictable events that your characters have little effect on. Despite having little voice acting, there are few real dialogue options; most of the time during important NPC conversations, you're sitting there reading page after page of text, pressing 1 repeatedly until you get the chance to press 2 because you have a key item in your inventory from a side quest.

Even though the combat system is enjoyable and has plenty of room for character customization, I often found it an exercise in frustration. D:OS's combat isn't hard or even particularaly challenging, the game just plays itself better than you do. Enemies often "cheat" by teleporting in more foes after you engage them, a la Dragon Age 2, along with summoning pets of their own. While the Magicka-style elemental combos are a unique touch to a cRPG, enemies often utilize them in unexpected ways, like shooting lightning at a pool of blood (that came out of an enemy you killed) to stun your hero for at least 2-3 rounds (not counting additional stun checks while the field is active). Combat often comes down to who can CC who harder, turning fights into a knockdown/blind/stun-fest while you beat the punching bag enemies before they can summon pets or kill your mages in one enemy's turn. At least a third of the spells in the game have direct upgrades making many early spells obsolete in 20 or so hours (why use a single target version of a spell when the AoE has the same AP cost?). This would be reasonable in a MMO but in a single player cRPG where the highest spell req is level 20, it just looks like lazy design. Like the plot, combat is too compartmentalized; many areas have large swaths of nothing, while the last map in the game has a party of 4-8 mobs every screen width.

Tons of smaller issues plague this game. A clunky inventory system where important quest items gets easily lost in a sea of crafting materials. A frustrating crafting system that rewards guesswork and wiki-reading more than ingame exploration. A tedious Rock-Paper-Scissors minigame system for winning dialogue checks. A painfully long mandatory stealth sequence against invincible enemies that will kill your heroes in 2-3 hits. Although I think Divinity: Original Sin is a decent cRPG and I recommend it to fans of the genre, I feel no desire to ever play it again. Too much of D:OS is just tedious busywork in a predictable story that is stretched too thin to be consistently enjoyable.

My only minor complaint is that the UI seems a bit clunky sometimes. I really do not care for the 'chain' system that controls your party. Sometimes the inventory menus, etc are hard to navigate. I'm just being picky though.

Bottom Line: If you enjoyed the Baldur's Gate type of games, this is what you've been waiting 10+ years for. If you perhaps missed the boat on the older games but enjoy RPG style games, you will probably love this. I hope the developers sell a million copies and make a ton of money on this so we can get more games like this in the future!

This is the type of game I have been craving in long time. The freedom, immersion and everything was just the thing that really jived with me.
However, this game is probably not for every. If you enjoy something lighter, more action-y and more like other contemporary RPGs, you should probably look elsewhere, but I'd say give it a try.

Let me explain myself. Right from the start the mechanics of the game gives you that feeling that it's been designed to target the young MMORPG players more than the old timers (like myself) who played AD&D as a teenager. The way you use your skills and spells is typically derived from game systems like WoW. You do not have to sleep, learn spells, plan a strategy once in combat the way you do if you've played BG before for example. You only click (or press mice/keyboard hot keys) on what you want to do based on a turn-based combat system. For my part, this is not exactly my definition of what fun mean...
I've not played the game to the end, but the story doesn't seems to me really engaging. Right from the start, you got this feeling that you just don't care about what's happening. You just hang around in search of something to do and end up opening alot of "Level 1 broken vases..." more than wondering what's the best course of action to take.

Some others game mechanics are not really well done. Sneaking and pickpocketting are not really fun and i couldn't just believed it when i had to play "rock, paper, scisor" to win an argument with one of my party member... The level of immersiveness is just plain low.

Graphically, the game is not bad, but i can't say i was impressed by the look of it. Diablo 3 looks way better for a comparison.

Believe me! It's not the "best RPG of the last decade" like somes says, far from that.

Well it didnt take long before the game started to piss me off. Its like the game was playtested by nothing else than Ultra-Hardcore Oldschool RPG fans or by people who made the game and knows the ins and outs of every single thing in the game.

You Almost at the start of the game arrive at a Major city which is a major mistake of a RPG.... you should never start at a major city and confuse the player who is already confused by learning all the new game systems of a game they just started playing. Only RPG who has pulled this off is BG2 but that game was so much alike BG1 they got away with it.

Then you want to go on your first quest, NOPE! You get like 10 quests at the city and MAYBE you can complete two of them because the rest if way too high level for you. The game never tells you the quests are out of your reach. Im all for the game not holding your hand but if they playtested their game a little more they would figure out its not a good play experience to get access to content you have no chance in completing. Some quests begins as a quest made for low levels, only with the boss fight being against a level 7 boss mob...The game howeever never bothered to tell you that you aint got no business with 90% of the quets the game gives you AT THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME. Baldurs Gate never had this problem, there was challenging fights there yes, but nowhere like this **** where you get insta killed in 1 hit by random mobs. Why the **** give me quests that i got almost zero chance in completing?

They Ofcourse you want to go level up somewhere. BUT THERE ARENT ENOUGH TO DO TO LEVEL UP! First Quest area is mobs of level 3-5.. i was level 2 when i got there... sure with lots of blood sweat and tears i cleared it... now im level 4, almost level 5. The Next area is level 5-7 monsters. FIghts can often be your 4 party members vs 8 enemy mobs. When you are lower level than the monsters AND outnumbered the game just starting to be torture on your ****ing brain. There is not enough quests and monsters to level up unless you refuse to give up before you have found every ****ing little xp hidden away.

WAY TO GO TO **** UP A GAME. Thank god for pillars of eternity.

I give this game 5 Just because i love old school RPGs but this game is a huge fail.

But considering how much I enjoyed the original, and a few of their subsequent games. I was willing to take a chance. And I'm glad I did.

For anyone who longs for the days of the Ultima series, or the Baldurs Gate/Icewind Dale (Planescape too) series of Isometric PC games, this is it. Larian has crafted a true successor to those games. Since it's release, I have been playing it almost constantly (all through 4th of July weekend). It has depth and character and is a joy to play. It's challenging too. Even on the normal level, you'll be challenged by the enemies and bosses. Learning which Player Character types do what and using their skills to the fullest is a must. Likewise, learning which enemies do what and what their skills are are also a must.

The graphics are beautiful (running this on highest settings) and detailed. The game (so far) runs smooth and I have had no crashes. Though I have had the occasional (not game breaking) bug (one bug was sometimes not costing anything to repair gear at a vendor), so far and overall, the game is pretty polished. I will say the limited camera rotation frustrated me to no end. There is an option for full 360 degree rotation, but enabling it comes with a warning that the single player campaign was not designed for it and could cause graphical glitches (or something to that affect). I took a chance and enabled it and I'm glad I did. I have yet to run into any noticeable graphical issues. Having the full camera rotation is so much nicer. Include the Co-op and toolkit and you have a game well worth the Steam price. For those of us who backed it at the lower tiers, we made out like bandits. :D

I really can't recommend this game enough. It brought back fond memories of those early RPGs and I found myself lost in the game and losing track of time once again, something I have't done playing a game in a long time.

Divinity is a strong game with lots to discover. The developers didn't hold your hand through the whole game and there's plenty of customization. I'm not getting quite the same sense of making the party own that I would have liked, but the gameplay and combat are really compelling. Definitely worth picking up.

The only downside is that movement feels a bit slow, and there can be trouble with clicking to move in combat when instead you wanted to attack (which has to do with the monster's hit-boxes + camera angle being finicky)

Combat is great, the environment is pretty, and there are many choices to make.
Customization is awesome, and I can only hope that the modding community will bring so much more to the table.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think this has a potential to be a great game. At release, however, it needs a bit of work. There are only two NPC companions, and no AI personality for the starting companion character. This makes comparisons to Baldur's Gate 2 a bit hollow, since the best thing about that game was the personalities and interactions of the NPC characters in your party. Expand

It's a conscious decision on Larian's part to resurrect tried-and-true threads that run deep into the bones of the CRPG genre. It's a culmination of those efforts and an unapologetic celebration of battle-tested concepts backed by solid co-op. Most of all, it comes together as a grand adventure that hearkens back to sleepless nights buoyed by the roll of a die and a pad of grid paper shared between fellow dungeon crawlers.

As much as I loved the bulk of the game, by the end I was burning out, and burning out fast. Despite that, I'm glad that some studios are still willing to show an almost insane level of ambition in realizing the games they want to make without compromise, even if it does lead to a few dire moments here and there.
