So what we have here. Another childish fantasy, where everything is green. Stupid story written by a five-nephew of the main developers, dilaogy wrote to his younger sister. Absolutely no atmosphere, which drew players into the game, just another generic fantasy pun, this time enriched RPG elements.

Camera is a joke and hides half of the things needed to proceed. The "journal" is really no help. No map markers giving you an inkling of where your supposed to head next....all in all...it's just a mess.

Original idea was great...execution was horrible.

Camera is absolutely rubbish, it even flying out the sky If you do simple things like walking up or down, combat has absolutely absurd miss chances in melee (I specced 100% Into hitting my blows and I still had the issue of only having about 50%~ hitchance against huge lumping orcs), Spells are either completely absent without spending thousands of golds in vendors, do no damage or simplyCamera is absolutely rubbish, it even flying out the sky If you do simple things like walking up or down, combat has absolutely absurd miss chances in melee (I specced 100% Into hitting my blows and I still had the issue of only having about 50%~ hitchance against huge lumping orcs), Spells are either completely absent without spending thousands of golds in vendors, do no damage or simply never feel like applying their effects when you need it the most as casters are the most fragile classes and don't even get me started on the dialog system. Rock paper scissors. Really?

My biggest disappointment and at the same time, great laughter though, was that how my 2 hulking warriors could not take down a thin, wooden glass door with 3 greatswords and 2 halberd axes. Initially planning to break in and steal some stuff in a deserted house, the door got down to 40% before all of my weapons broke, leaving me with a slightly damaged nigh invulnerable door and huge expenses in weapon repairs and that's just pathetic for any RPG standard.

Yes, I am well aware that you can pick locks but unfortunately, my character specialized in lockpicking did not deem it necessary to bring any lockpicks on his grand journey and nor did any of the 52 NPC's I've traded with or the dozens of houses I robbed have any. These may seem like small complaints, and from some aspects of view, they are. But really, the biggest offense here was how I tried to derail from the generic path at the first city and was met with only opponents more than 3 times my level, which I either had to abuse-win by packing oil barrels and letting them explode in their faces or get instantly wiped out even with the best gear humanly possible.

Long story short, this game has a long way to go and It's really quite the embarassment to be called a release with patch after patch after patch confirming this.

This is a re-review. I originally gave this a low score, but having finished the game I realize it deserves much better. This is a re-review. I originally gave this a low score, but having finished the game I realize it deserves much better. A lot of people suggest fans of old isometric RPGs from 15 years ago (Ultima, BG) will like this game, and I would agree. But it's a game that shouldn't be compared to them, because it has a personality of its own.

    Major pros:

+ Combat is deep, tactical, and highly addictive. While not quite balanced as the first 1/3 is much harder than the last 1/3, if nothing else there's a definite sense of progression.
+ The story and setting don't have the heart of Bioware's best, but there's enough whimsy and intrigue to keep you engaged.
+ Multiple ways to conclude quests.

    Cons:

    - The UI lacks polish. Endless floating windows that get in the way of each other, limited camera rotation makes finding the right perspective difficult sometimes, tiny buttons. Functional, but could be much better.
    - Obtuse puzzles. I get that the developer didn't want to hand hold players, but pixel searching for buttons, vague clues you may not even find if you approach quests out of order, just cause grief.
    - Cheap instadeath moments. For example, there's a boss whose corpse will kill your character instantly if you step on him. But there is no warning that will happen. Resurrect scrolls are common enough, but it still annoys me.

Besides certain puzzles which I genuinely disliked, the cons are more nitpicking than anything else. Overall, this is a must play for any fan of the great isometric RPGs of the past.

I can understand why there are so many 9 or 10s here. Because Larian studios is one of the few developers aiming to create great and classic RPG games, and generally will not scarifice a game's depth and quality in exchange for the taste of mass public. Also, there are so many average or even mediocre RPGs released in the recent years, so this game just shine like a diamond in a sea of sand.

Although sticking to the formulas of old classic RPGs, let alone the plague of technical issues and quest related bugs, this rushed game still need more polishing before it can be a great game with good experience to most players.

Here are the areas that need further polishing:
    - rock, paper, scissors argument system is just plain boring, it never comes close to the epic conversation of Bahdur's Gate
    - the self-talking mechanism between the main characters is just odd, it should have another ways to develop characters' social skill
    - there should be a general direction hint of what players should go, just like Divinity 2, so players will not just move to areas they are not supposed to go yet
    - traveling and picking up items are just chore, as it takes too many time and clicks
    - no balance of combat difficulty and the use of enviornment, tacticial variety should be allowed for player to pick from, but not a death is guaranteed if not following particular direction
    - equipment and character models should have a greater diversity
    - imbalance between quest types, there are just too many puzzle solving quests, and if not followed in particular orders, player will just get stuck
    - there are still improvement areas for how those puzzles are presented and solved
    - combat accuracy is too unreliable, resulting in just a save or load attempts, since enemies are generally overpowered
    - there should be more adjustment available for font size and camera angles

Overall, it can be a great game just like Divinity 2 in the past, once all the issues are sorted out, but again it may take around 2 years again.

the few dungeons are small, and the explodings traps just irritating

zoom in is needless cause no tilting of the camera
and many atmosphere things how missing animals, day and night are missing,

u cant explore the map outside cause of the lvlcap of the monsters( to strong, 3 lvl difference u die after one hit from an orc), the map is too small for , so the game is very linear,
i dont see the open world, u can only decide how u get some things(jack murder), if u break in or steal or talk with an animal
maps look big, but isnt, u just move slow, there is not much
decisions have no effect, just if u fight or not most time, but most not memorable
if u are lvl 10 u saw almost all skills, the spellcasting is slow, especially summoning, but many spells too,
the town is under attack, but u have not feeling for this
looting many things after fight makes me tired, scroll in postion when moving the same,
i dont know how people needed 30 hours for the first map, i have read all text, i have all quest, i played on hard after lvl 5 and needed 15hours, i wanted try more fights, so I killed all soldiers in the town, this was a nice, but short fun, know i stop playing, i have no motivation, i hoped i would be better, but after the fights were no challenging I see no reason, and i am afraid of another long boring text- and walk-quest with no surprises

yes its a low budget production and it could be I`m to critical, but 10/10 is
    greatly exaggerated
is think the 80% of the budget went into the editor and technique, the rest seems like a better mod
who have fun with stealing and find chests could have fun, but who wants decisions which influence the charakter
or story, or surpisings storyscripts or fights not only from one side, or an enemy which counter and debuff or stun u or focus ur mages, or want nice endbosses or great dungeons or explore the world or a nice story, then dont play the game, humor and small decisions are not enough, the game is nothing against bg2 or nwn 2(think about the potentiality these days)

... i try the editor.......and wait for pillar of eternity

However, the truth is that most of those issues are not addressed at all, and the game just launch in such a buggy status.

So, what 's the result? A lot of users suffer from loading issues, game crash and save corruption.

Therefore, the game is now nearly updated at a daily basis, but unfortunately there are more and more bugs discovered by the community as the game is on sale now.

This is unacceptable for such a long development cycle, and the tons of new bugs identified just make me doubt about if the game is actually tested before launch.

At this rate, I wonder if the game will be at least free of game-breaking bugs one month after the launch.

If you are interested, just check the steam forum for the issues currently reported by the community.

See for yourself before you make a purchase decision. Don't just blindly buy a game if you have to wait for a long time before it is finally playable.

I actually had high hopes since some people in everywhere talks positively about this game so I bought itI played this game for like 8 hours and I can honestly say this is not a good game as it was promoted I know now certain people might seriously get hurt and try to censor my review (like done to my previous review) in order to cover up the truth but truth can never be hidden forever. I actually had high hopes since some people in everywhere talks positively about this game so I bought it and started playing it.

I am gonna group my review into categories in order to make it easy to read. first graphics, sounds, (voice , ambient music), gameplay, features ,technical side and my honest view.

the graphics isn't really great like it was promoted the characters have less polygons and when the game is zoomed to a character it's quite visible and body and face textures don't blend together well and it's quite visible in character creation menu, the settings show the game has ambient occlusion, SMAA like that graphical options but they ain't really visible in the game and there is motion blur in the game but it's totally useful because who would want motion blur for a strategy RPG game? we want to see the entire screen it shouldn't be blur when characters move like in first person shooter games and SMAA 1x does not do a good job because when it's set still I could see the jaggy lines around the characters so there has to be more options like SMAA 4X or 8X unless SMAA option is useless, the game has a lot of shiny effects but it breaks the realism of the game and beaches ain't realistic the area where the water and ground met doesn't blend together properly so water stays in a specific shape and there are no waves come from the sea.

sounds ain't really awesome either. there ain't any memorable or interesting soundtracks the menu music seems like a music plays in a funeral so boring and it makes me depress and cry I dunno why but it seems really bad for a game like this honestly and there ain't any good music during the gameplay and characters don't have voices and everything is like text based but occasionally our main characters babble something and it has voice and ambient music isn't great there isn't proper ambient music either in beaches there is an obvious ambient sound in real world but it doesn't appear in this game and in jungles ,in dungeons it's same you will feel like less realistic in every area, there are a lot of dialogs but most of dialogs don't have voices so you just read them like an article.

game seems have a lot of unnecessary features like picking unnecessary objects that you never use and picking items that you can catch fishes but actually you can't use them for catch fishes and there is no day and night cycle but developers promised to do it and there is no in game time and it always stays in the same time and you can't sail on boats, ships and can't even swim but there a lot of ships and ponds there and there is a large sea around the ground too but it's totally useless since there is no swimming, boating, sailing features and everything is set in the ground it makes me really disappointed. I really had high hopes but after playing the game everything was broken.I heard that developers claim it's hard to implement day and night cycle feature but it's not a proper excuse certain games have it so why this doesn't? I don't care about the game's price if it's worth I would buy no matter how much it's.

technical side is same like the game features. the game seems heavy and I can't even ALT+TAB to come to the desktop because then it takes a lot of minutes and the game seems consume both processor and the GPU heavily but it doesn't even look like a high end graphical game I feel like developers wasted their time on a lot of unnecessary things and game stutters a lot specially when there is going to be battle or approaching to a new area but luckily if you wander in the same area there is no stuttering and it takes 2 mints to load the game to the gaming world and it takes like 45 seconds to load into the character creation menu and texts are really small so it's hard to read from distance I have to come and close to the screen to read everything so reading the things is really hard and it makes me discourage and painful and there are a lot of lengthy dialogs and most of dialogs are not really necessary, and buttons for opening important menus like inventory, map are really small and not even properly visible. it takes a lot of times to search them, the game doesn't have a direction and you have to wonder everywhere to reach to the destination and no horses if there is a horse at least the traveling would be easy and the UI seems so messy like dialog UI is so big and it covers 1/4 of the screen during a dialog so basically you can't do many things in this game like people say it's like a big hype and the game is still in the beta level because there a lot of technical issues and developers seem fix them in each day but it's also annoying to update the game constantly.

I have spent a couple of hours with this game and have found it to be a great disappointment. While I have no doubt that the creators took advantage of the latest in modern technology, it comes across as primitive. You can't see where you're going and movement is awkward. While the graphics quality is better, it's like playing Ultima, back in the day. I don't have time for this. Although the game leaves beta, game breaking bugs are still everywhere. Long loading time or save corruption still can happen randomly. The game also have some performance issues which exist during the stages of alpha.

The plot is also quite linear and boring. Class distinction is meh. The only positive is the interaction with environment during combat.

Re-scoring after finishing the game.... 8.5 I started out at a 10 level because I was having so much fun I was just a little blinded to a couple of serious faults. I have to agree that the game is too vague about your progression. I had to REGULARLY get info from walkthrough's to progress, simply because the progression and/or puzzles are overwhelming. I don't need handholding, but the game has numerous points where you simply don't have any idea what to do next, and when you're FORCED read a walkthrough you often exclaim "No way I would have EVER figured that out." I have to deduct a point each for puzzles and aimlessness, but the fun factor won't allow me to rate the game as low as an eight, so 8.5 it is. Still a fantastic game, but there is room for improvement and I would definitely back Larian via kickstarter if I felt that feedback could guide them to another great game.

Still GOTY in my books.... $40 spent, and about 200 hours in, though it could have been done in 150 if I wasn't backtracking so much trying to figure out how to get things moving. Great job Larian.

Absolutely fantastic game, it brings back to me vivid memories of my Black Isle/Interplay experiences (Baldur's Gate, Fallout...). I have been playing for 50 hours so far. Here's a short summary of my opinion:

    Pros:

    - The combat mechanics are well thought and it's always exciting to get into a fight. The amount of skills allows you to setup a lot of interesting strategies. I have been going with a combo of 2 mages, rogue and dual hand weapon warrior. So how interesting is it? A good example is that aside the traditional fireball spell, you have teleport spells where you can potentially send your heavy warrior in the middle the monster pack, or send an enemy in a pit of fire.
    - The music is perfect and I keep humming it even when not playing
    - Graphics are really nice, maybe slightly too cartoony for me, but that comes down to personal preference
    - So much reading materials, lore and random objects everywhere. This is one of the thing that gives you that distinct BG or Fallout feeling. Opening a crate, finding an armor and a random book about random lore stories.

    Cons:

    - The dialogue system between your 2 main characters is pretty rubbish. I find myself reloading just to got the best traits (which improves some aspect of your character sheet like skills or combat boost). Also the way conflicts are resolved (when your characters disagree) is too random. It is basically a game of rock-paper-scissors. But this doesn't feel very random as the computer player never chooses the same object than you.
    - One thing that I think could have been improved very easily is the map/teleport system. The issue is that there is no world map. Instead you have a local map that helps you navigate the place you are currently present and a teleportation device that allows you to select in a list the portal you want to go to. That gives a feeling of a disconnected maps rather than a coherent world.

Overall this is a great game and I totally recommend it if you like old school RPGs.

There aren't many bugs left, so that is nice.
One of the only problems I have it is that the quests have no guidance at all.
That is usually a good thing, but it can result in running around for hours.

    Multiplayer is also pretty bad.
You join someone's game and use their characters.
For a host, its fine, but the co-op partner makes 0 progress on their own.

This game is more like Ultima 7 than BG, though. But that is NOT a bad thing. Its just a different approach - and mind you: Ultima 7 is/was also one of the best RPGs ever made!

Turn-based battle system is what makes this game GREAT! It’s really requires strategic thinking, careful use of element magic, use of skills and a lot of damage control against enemies’’ actions. Some battles are long and frustrating, though they are always rewarding.

Graphics is nice, nothing special, but it’s enough to enjoy fantasy setting and use of magic.

There is no handholding in the game, you have to read a lot of text, but not only is that very interesting for me, it sucks you incredibly hard into the gameworld that you sometimes just can't stop playing.

And then, there is combat - I've never before had so much fun playing a wizard in a game like this. Casting spells, burning down baddies and what else not is more rewarding in Divinity than in any other RPG I've played so far. There's some oil on the floor? Okay, then burn it and throw an enemy into it for good measure! Together with the very well done environment on every single of the large maps it's nothing short of a blast to explore the game.

Dialogue is vital in Original Sin. You basically have to talk to many, many characters on your quests to find solutions, find out where to go next, but it's all very organic and done in a way that when you figure something out, it makes sense. The game just will not do things for you (there IS a quest log mind you), or tell you what to do next - this is all down to the player to find out on your travels.

Overall, there'd be so much more to say about this gem, but I know I am a little late to the party here so that'll be it from me for now. I just wanted to add this review to thank Larian for their amazing game, because it's nothing short of that, and the fact friend and I played this for over 90 hours in coop with little to no issues ever. That's how it should be, and that's right another thumbs up. Divinity certainly has beefed up the standards far as RPG goes for me and it'll be tough for any other to replace it at the top of my list anytime soon. Far as RPG goes, Divinity: Original Sin is the real deal to me!

There is no one asking for your help, there is no "quest acquired" or exclamation popping up. but the game showed you one way to put fires out a couple of minutes ago and you still have a rain scroll.
That moment when you cast the spell without being ordered to do so, get XP and thanks by the NPCs after the fact, just because a game allowed you to use you're brain for a minute is just priceless.
Divinity is full of those moments. It doesn't hold your hand, because it doesn't need to. There is fundamental logic everywhere.

It has party and turn-based combat at its core with at first glance typical melee, ranged, buff, nerf, magic systems. The are certain nuances to it though that make it simply great, mainly a dynamic combat enviroment based on elemental effects. Just to give you an idea: cast a lightning bolt, deal damage and have a bit of a chance to stun the target. but why not cast a rain storm first, create a puddle in its center and then cast the lightning spell. just throw the hair dryer into the tub. and when you tired of that, cast ice shards and freeze the puddle, rendering enemies and allies unlikely to move across it.

the game, not just combat, is filled with these situations where simple mechanics can create many different ways to complete your task.

Interestingly, the game has two main characters, who regularly are in dialogue with each other. This concept is primarily aimed at co-op but you still get the opportunity to have two opinions on one subject. That isn't astonishing or anything like that but just a nice change to the usual rpg dialogue.

Graphics might be to bright for some but it fits the character of the world. It is a bit wacky and not as dark. But the level of detail has a nice, high balance regarding models, environment and effects. so it is always looks like a coherent picture from the games iso perspective.

The only thing that I didn't like is the actual style of dialogue. What I love about it in Baldurs Gate for example is that NPCs get character already by how they talk. You can clearly tell a peasant from priest or mage. The dialogue in D:OS is always very picturesque. Even the smallest events are described with a illustration or two and it sometimes just feels out of place and/or tiring.

But, if you like RGPs, especially AD&D or Dragon Age Origins you have to give this one a go. Maybe not the easiest start in the genre but a must have for every fan of it.

Enemies are varied throughout the game and battles are often tactical and pretty enjoyable most times. I absolutely love the fact that it's turn-based. The game revolves around dual protagonists with one optional companion each, so a group of 2 - 4. The RPG system is kinda new but easily recognizable by seasoned veterans of the genre. There's a lot of fun to be had with the way elements interact and a lot of interesting choices to be made in the levelling system. Mastering the game takes thought and experience but playing the game is easy and intuitive in itself.

The story is fun, nothing THAT special narratively, but the true quality is in the telling. Humorous, colourful, varied and sometimes outright dark, it comes together nicely in the end. Lots of little details to explore and combat is very rarely repetitive. It revolves a lot around the four elements and how they interact mixed with some crowd-controlling abilities, buffs and debuffs from other lines (do NOT ignore these if you play on a difficult setting!). The only problem I encountered was that I often mess around with different classes and ideas on a difficult setting while I learn the game mechanics well enough to create my exact party concept. In this game, there is a bit of a lull early on in the game with a lot of story-driven gameplay which can be a bit tedious to replay seven times before you get the party balance right. Apart from that, this game is just quite simply excellent. If you're into RPG games at all, you should definitely check out this title.

As others have said. Fantastic game, best fun I've had for years. Have all the consoles but P.C is my love and these types of games don't come out very often. Great stories, gameplay, graphics, music and fun. Recommended.

This is a pleasant surprise from Larian studio, who have kept releasing so-so games.
It is an instant classic that any serious RPG fan should play.

I never imagined there would be a room for improvement to old-school RPGs.
But they managed to pull off. And applaud to them.

This is the best RPG I've played since Sacred 2, smart, funny and challenging, with multiple ways to solve quests, combats, and brilliant character creation. The only cons that I feel are minimal like non-respawn enemies or difficulty to customize the portrait, but it also has a powerful toolset so any minor issue would be solved with mods. Well thought Larian!

All the plaudits that you can read here and elsewhere are justly deserved. Engrossing, challenging, addictive, well written and a treat visually. Can't say I was a great fan of the combat system initially but it grew on me quite a bit. Spells and abilities are good and some of the fights quite challenging (although enemy AI could be improved - I felt a bit too lucky in a few fights). Crafting and blacksmithing systems are great, there are wide variety of enemies and, of course, loads of magical items floating about with which to outfit your party. All contained in a very impressive game world. Inventories are a bit fiddly and annoying (err make them bigger onscreen?) and we could do with some more joinable NPCs in the game world who have a bit more voiced dialogue. I suppose there is a case for not making every PC be able to learn every skill too. There are a few more minor annoyances but I'm sure these will be ironed out in time. If you are an RPG fan you should play this game.

Baldur's Gate still holds the crown, but I get the impression that if anyone could make something that could be hailed as a BG3 (at least in spirit) then Larian would be the people to do so. Well done guys - a great accomplishment.

Probably the best RPG of 2014. Absolutely fantastic game, scenario, maps, theme, music etc. The only con is that since it was crowd funded, the cinematics were just animations of images. Definitely worth playing. Tons of content, twist of scenario, many paths to follow in the conversations. This game is a MUST PLAY.

Overall I am very happy with this game, having put about 50 hours into it. I am still in the second map, so I have no idea what the mid and end game are like. But So far the experience has been very enjoyable.

I do understand the concerns of the negative reviews. Depending on what you are looking for in a RPG it is totally possible that a consumer may regret his/her purchase. I have at times been quite frustrated and swore out loud, but very few, if any, games are so polished that these things can be avoided.

The most frustration comes from the interface. The camera is VERY unwieldy and there have been several times I have "misclicked" in battle because the hotbar didnt register, or the thing I was clicking shifted position just as I was attacking.

The amount of junk loot is overwhelming, but you cannot ignore anything as you have no idea as to what might be needed in the future. Twice I have spend about a half hour organizing my inv to a manageable
    point so I could continue.

Character progression in the beginning is the slowest of any game I have ever played. This gives the game a very slow feeling out of the gate. Let me say though this changes once you hit level 5 and have the ability to start finishing some of the bigger quests. Progression after that is much better and more satisfying.

The game WILL NOT help you through the story line or quests. You WILL come to points where you have no idea what to do next. You WILL stare blankly at the screen. But pushing on will allow you to proceed deeper into the game. Often times you will kill an encounter that will drop the item for a completely different quest that you had given up on because you had absolutely no idea where to start looking. The times I have been well and truly stuck, a night sleep and new perspective has made all the difference. The answers are there, the clues are there. There just isnt a big green arrow pointing at them.

If you can look past the above issues, then get this game. You will LOVE it. If what I have written gives you pause, then you may not want to invest. I will say though that I have three friends who are also playing the game, and we all love it. The positives far outweigh the negatives in my book.

Larian Studios have delivered a game that has the nostalgic charm of an old school isometric RPG but with unique and modern game play mechanics, graphics, story and style that make this game a pleasure to play. If you like RPGs and haven't tried this game yet, do it, you won't regret it.

    Pro's:

    - Thoroughly enjoyable tactical combat that always makes you think and use your skills, spells and the environment to your advantage.
    - Varied enemies with cool boss fights
    - A diverse range of skills, spells and character builds available
    - Detailed and interesting locations to explore
    - Lush graphics / art style
    - Lots of quests often with varied and alternate means to solve
    - A solid story coupled with interesting dialog (often humorous)

    Con's:

    - I felt the game was a bit long - I sank 90 hours into this game (completed every single side quest)
    - While the maps (corresponding to each act) were very large and detailed I didn't get the sense of a 'world' to explore - more so simply 4 different main areas.
    - Some minor bugs, nothing to bad
    - Combat went from being very challenging at the start to quite easy at the end (I upped the difficulty to 'hard' mid-game)

It is a HUGE, wonderfully modernized but still refreshingly old-school rpg, with an incredible attention to detail, great humor, a decent story and an amazingly deep, turn-based tactical combat system that allows for countless approaches and combinations.
It looks georgeous, is surprisingly bug-free for a project this size (and it's patched regularly and fast as well), and it runs well even on older systems. The crafting system is fun and intuitive, and some of the puzzles are very well done.

For all the praise, however, I also have to mention the downsides. And there are definitely those:
The balance, in general, could use an overhaul. The game has a pretty steep learning curve in the beginning, but once you know the system, the fights are actually very, very simple. Note that I say simple, not easy.

The fights, especially boss fights, tend to be long, repetitive, tedious, and, yes, even boring. The enemies usually have a TON of hitpoints, unlimited special abilities and everyone and their mothers, - of the same level or a bit higher than the party - is pretty much immune to special abilities - and thus, most tactical choices. They do, however, do pretty pathetic amounts of damage while keeping your party stunned, crippled, knocked down, frozen and generally annoyed but alive.
I would highly prefer shorter, more challenging battles against enemies that are actually affected by all the special arrows I can craft and all those abilities - foes that are much faster to kill or disable but a lot more likely to kill ME.

The numbers/RPG mechanics are yet another problem. Larian follows the old JRPG-style of insane number exaggeration. You start with a weapon that does 10 damage and you'll end with some monstrous obscentiy that can easily exceed 1000 damage on a critical hit or with a special maneuver. Enemies hitpoints and resistances grow accordingly, and the interesting enemies are thus always within about 2 levels of yours. Higher enemies are pretty much untouchable, lower ones pathetically helpless.

And, finally, many quests and puzzles are just too damn obscure. I commend Larian to go against the mainstream, and skip all the quest markers, map markers, signs above a quest giver's head etc. But sometimes they fall to the other extreme and there is simply no way to continue with a quest but to randomly walk evereywhere, try everything and finally check the internet, only to learn that you missed some random item 4 hours ago... ;-P
More logic and sensible hints, please!

But this is all just criticizing on a VERY high level, and it doesn't diminish the fun at all. And, hands down, you won't get a better deal for your money anywhere atm.

You can craft and blacksmith a lot (if you discover the workings and recipies) but really, you don't have to. Do yourself a favor, and skip most of it.
Game needed quite a few patches to get in this state, but you can have a good time now, if you are up to a rather lengthy adventure, if you can restrain yourself from dragging everything along and if you can handle hours of inventory sorting and overlong battle animations.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is absolutely awesome, I've been waiting so long for a good old school RPG.
The combat system: The turn based combat is just marvelous, you really must do a good strategy for taking down strong enemies.
The lore: As the game says, original story, it isn't anything complex, but I thought it was good enough.
Coop mode: Playing with a friend is fun, but a really good RPG should be played by 3-4 players.
Camera: It is a weak point, could be a 360 degrees camera.
NPCs: You have many NPCs to play with, but most of them by contract , they have no back history or anything like this, until now.
Final consideration: The game is very good, and I don't feel sorry for spending money in it. I only wished there was a respawn system for some places.
Going against some reviews, some complained that the journal does not help anything or point the way to go, the RPG games were becoming easier day by day to attend new generation of players, now it is back to the root. But I agree it should at least say where to go in some quests, if it is not about seek for something, because marking is not seeking anymore.

+ One of the most beautiful and immersive worlds I've seen in a game to date. You can interact and barter with almost anyone (including animals if you have the talent). The graphics are grade A for a game like this and I often find myself just staring at the scenery.
+ Gripping story that has you guessing whats coming next, and most of the time you guess wrong. For me, at least, it seemed most of the story came straight out of left field. I loved it.
+ Combat feels engaging, challenging, and at times it can be very unforgiving. One wrong move could cost you a hero. Icy surfaces are definitely the bane of my existence, I think they get me more than anything else. But the combat itself really gives you a sense of accomplishment when you kill a group of enemies you just died 3 times on to your own stupid errors.
+ The music is incredible. I constantly find myself humming along to the music, even when I'm not playing. Every song is a perfect match for whats going on in game.
+ Character creation and class system is the most flexible of any RPG I've come across. You can be whatever you want to be from level one, so you don't end up with cookie cutter builds that everyone uses. This really allows you to adapt the game to your play style.
+ Replay-ability. I'm still on my first play through and already I find myself thinking about and deciding what I'm going to do next time around. Almost every quest can turn out differently depending on what you do and how you play. It seems no two play throughs will ever the same.

    Cons:
    - I'm not going to lie there were a couple bugs I've come across so far. None of which were game breaking and were fixed with a simple Save/Reload. The most common and most annoying for me if sometimes combat will start but the music wont. The only other big one I can remember was one of my companions wasn't able to be healed. But as stated saving/reloading did fix both of these bugs.
    - I wish it was longer. Not to say it's short because it's not by any means. I'm on my first play through level 16 and so far I've invested 76 hours of play. I really just don't want it to end.

I can honestly say this is the best 40 bucks I've ever invested in a game. I highly recommend it anyone who enjoyed games like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age: Origins, or Knights of the Old Republic. Anyway hope this was helpful and hope you enjoy the game.

    Cheers,

There are a few things that I personally would like to have in RPG's like this. More character customization options would be nice, I really miss the NWN style D&D classes and how you can mix and match classes to make whatever you want. This game is pretty straight forward class wise although once you know the tricks, you can make a very powerful dual class type character. I hated the rock/paper/scissors dialog fights... it reminded me of how much I hated the dialog in Oblivion. The camera was iffy sometimes and sometimes in combat, environmental strategies dont work right because it is not clear where to aim or whether or not you can do it all. For instance, some puddles do not electrocute properly. The game definitely needs an commit/undo option due to silly click mistakes.

Game is very good. However, when it says that it's "old school," bear in mind this also means it adopts old school game/plot mechanics. This can lead to frustration at times as the combat is ridiculously difficult (except on "easy" where it's *too* easy), and quests can be extremely vague in what you're supposed to do next.

Story/Dialogue: The way you interact with the world just feels very natural and keeps you entertained. These days I feel myself getting bored or never even really getting interested at all when it comes to game storyline. Even games that have generally good reviews feel cheesy to me pretty often. This one, for whatever reason, is keeping me genuinely interested.

Art/Style: It's pretty good. It's nothing special. Honestly that's probably the only thing that isn't super great about this game.

Combat: Extremely gratifying and complex, but not so much that it pushes you away. It takes time to figure out, but that's part of the reason this game holds my interest... it doesn't hold your hand. Figuring out ways to beat a fight that you probably shouldn't be in feels amazing. I'd honestly put the combat complexity and depth somewhere near Final Fantasy Tactics.

Overall: An amazing single-player experience. I can't vouch for multiplayer since I haven't tried and don't plan to. If you enjoy RPGs at all, this is a must. Worth the full price, which I rarely say.

Good work Larian.. each game you release gets better and better.

If you are looking for the old school Baldurs gate/ Fallout esque style of game with a huge improvement on combat tactics this is your game.

The standard Larian Humor makes a return too..

I gave this game 10/10, because honestly, so far it is just about perfect. I have not finished it yet, but it is exactly what I have always loved about roleplaying games. If you go outside of the starting city too early, the enemies are not scaled down, and instead you get killed. The game can be PUNISHINGLY hard if you don't do a few side quests now and then. There's a lot of humor to the game. For example, when you go into "stealth mode" you diguise yourself as a part of the environment. Undergound you might disguise yourself as a stone. Inside, as a barrel, etc. There's a lot of fun to be had and a lot of content to explore. If you're expecting visual spectacles the likes of which you have never seen or spectacular voice acting, then this isn't the game for you. But if you want a good, old-fashioned RPG like Baldur's gate or Morrowind, then you've come to the right place. The game doesn't coddle you. It doesn't adjust the levels of enemies. The first time I played, I made some unfortunate mistakes leveling up, but I don't object to the fact that it cost me a little. Now I've learned and I'm trying it over again.

And the best thing about it is that I don't feel the ten hours I spent before I restarted were wasted at all. No, I learned in the school of hard knocks. I'd elaborate more, but I'm going to go play a little bit more.

I wanted to love this game so much, sadly i can't. The worst about it, is Larian actually made a wonderful job and D:OS could have been a great game but all the little things i dont like in this game are a deal breaker for me.

So what do i not like in this game :

    1. It's extremly linear, despite the (kind of) open world. Sure there are a few side quests, some of them hidden, some of them really cool, but apart from those, you have to stay on the intended path or the game will punish you. Brutally. As soon as you try fighting ennemies more than one level higher than you, you get your sorry ass handed to you.

    2. Even the way you should fight have been laid out for you : always use the environemental stuff around or die (or turn the game to easy mode). What i love about CRPGs is to create original parties, with non conventionnal ways to fight. You can't really do that in D:OS, especially given how dull the spells are (oh look i can give you a ONE strenght bonus ! for a whole TWO rounds ! aint THAT sexy ?!)

    3. Most of the time, you're at a loss about what to do. I'm not asking for quest markers, but i'm pretty sure the game could have made what you're supposed to do a bit more intuitive. And dont even get me started about crafting, it's the worst crafting system i've ever laid my eyes on.

    4. The game is still pretty bugged as of now. Larian seems to be doing a fine job of correcting this, so this might not be an issue for a long.

    5. Only 2 companions ? Are you kidding me ? Yes i know you can recruit some generic companions later in the game, but that seemed bugged in my game, they did not level up the level of my main characters when i hired them. Fighting level 10 mobs with lv1 companions seemed like a bad idea so i passed.

    6. Did i mention how dull the spells are ? That and the fact that you have no idea why a spell worked or didnt. For instance my warrior has a 1h weapon that has a 30% chance of crippling target. After around 2 hours of using it, i have yet to see it work. Just Once.

All in all, i'm not regretting having bought this game, i had a pretty good time playing it. But to me it just can't compare with the genre classics such as BG2 or NWN.

Finally. An RPG done with some love and caring, just like old-school RPG. This game is extremely good and deserves to be played by anyone who loves RPG. A truly well-done game.

Competent effort, but quite mediocre overall. Poor writing, poor characterisation (only 2 companions, and even they are dull and given very little dialogue!), boring and generic fantasy world that you've seen a million times -- oh, elves and goblins and a dark mysterious evil that you, the chosen one, have to defeat. Yawn.

The question design is pretty bad. In Fallout, you'll encounter

Yawn.

The question design is pretty bad. In Fallout, you'll encounter a cave full of scorpions that have been causing problems for the nearby town. You can choose to simply go in and kill all the scorpions, of course, but you can also choose to blow up the cave with dynamite if you have the right skills to detect the ideal weak point in the cave wall to place dynamite. There are constant skill checks in dialogue and in the world, you really feel like the character you created is YOUR character. In Divinity Original Sin, that is not the case. The scarce skill checks are all related to one skill: charisma. Worse yet, even if you have very low (or possibly non-existent) charisma skill, you can win anyway via the tedious Rock Paper Scissors minigame. All this might be acceptable if the quests themselves were interesting, but they never are; go here, kill that, retrieve this, return. Maybe you'll be 'lucky' enough to spend time searching for a small hidden switch behind some barrels or something as you encounter the ever familiar traps such as lava that will kill you instantly if you walk on it, or ice which will trip your characters up for a good 5 seconds which is just amazing fun let me assure you. The developers expect you to clear the ice with fire area of effect spells, so I oblige and sit through the insanely long animations and cooldown times over and over again to clear a path to my goal.

Despite being 'open world' it's really very linear with a clear path to follow once you get past the initial city area.

The item system is awful. I have yet to find a good staff and I'm nearly done with the game. Oh, scratch that - I did find one among the piles and piles of one handed swords I found a staff after killing a certain boss. Finally, I thought. Too bad that staff needs to be destroyed for story purposes, so despite being a great staff with good stat points and granting you a spell ability, it will quickly need to be destroyed with no replacement offered. Brilliant. Crafting is abysmal, unclear and always provides terrible items that aren't worth using. Perhaps I needed a very high crafting skill to make it worthwhile?

The one saving grace of the game is the combat, which is above average to be sure but nothing great. The amount of times my characters walked to a certain location instead of attacking due to the ridiculously finicky and inaccurate cursor is beyond count. The spell animations are far too long. The balance is off, with pyrokinetic spells being by far the worst -- I came across a huge amount of enemies where fire spells were not only ineffective but HEALED the enemy. Lightning spells meanwhile were pretty much always great, with only 1 or 2 enemies resisting it. The secondary effect is also clearly superior - would you rather deal a bit of damage, or prevent your enemy from doing anything at all for several turns?

Overall, I have enjoyed this game despite how critical I've been. A mediocre CRPG beats a good shooter any day of the week for me. And it's a hell of a lot better than "RPGs" like Skyrim, that's for damn sure.

I loved BG2 and D:OS is a technical improvement in almost every way...

+ nice graphics + good music + great user interface and controls + lots of content ... but while the game is technically great, it's also riddled with poor design decisions: - skill book distribution is random, so it's possible that you will not be able to get the skills you like. some skills are bugged and

    + nice graphics
    + good music
+ great user interface and controls

... but while the game is technically great, it's also riddled with poor design decisions:

    - skill book distribution is random, so it's possible that you will not be able to get the skills you like. some skills are bugged and don't drop and are not sold at all. they never bothered to fix this. incredibly lazy job
    - no rest option and no health regeneration. crafting food or teleporting to town breaks the fluidity of the game and drags out the play time unnecessarilly, especially at the start of the game, when you don't have good healing skills
    - the trait system is ridiculous. You get negative traits for not helping slavers and murderers, for example... yeah. Someone didn't really think that through.
    - everything about the crafting system is terrible. I would need more than 5000 characters to describe all the things that are wrong with it
    - the inventory could be better: item stacking, containers (different colors), better sorting. also, the vendor screen has a different sorting than the normal inventory. managing items is a chore
    - quest items don't disappear when quests are done. there are so many quest items that the inventory is a mess
    - weapons break too fast. it's ok when using them to destroy chests, but they should last longer in combat. I've had fully repaired weapons break from one fight. Seriously, what the ****
    - no day/night cycle. i understand the reason for this (it's a lot of work to implement), but it's a very important feature that really adds to the atmosphere and immersion.
    - the game is very linear in that you always have to find the area with monsters you can actually defeat. your level pretty much dictates what to do next, because the penalties when fighting higher level enemies are over the top
    - the riddles in D:OS, if you can even call them that, almost entirely consist of finding an item hidden in a room and clicking on it. very boring and a waste of time
    - characters feel mostly bland with a few exceptions
    - some armor items have stupid colors (light green?) and there are no dyes to fix it

The fact that I still give 7/10 despite all this criticism shows how great this game could have been. Now there's hoping that there will be good mods.

Wait, what? 10 out of 10? But I am not even a big fan of the RPG genre, much less of the turn based type. Who cares, this game rules. I played some other games, I felt deserve 10, but this is something else.
It is best experienced for yourself. Just one advice - struggle with it the first 5-6 hours and if you do, you'll probably play it for good. One of the best gaming adventures I played

One of the best gaming adventures I played in the last few years. It will make you feel smart, and it will make you feel stupid. You are going to be frustrated and helpless and you will feel like a winner when you successfully overcome an obstacle (and there are usually many ways to do it).... PS: don't use the internet too much to help you (maybe only for some initial tips), it should be played like an old-school game in order to fully enjoy it. And while you are going to ask yourself many questions and have many doubts, this is a big part of what makes the game more like a real experience.

It's a conscious decision on Larian's part to resurrect tried-and-true threads that run deep into the bones of the CRPG genre. It's a culmination of those efforts and an unapologetic celebration of battle-tested concepts backed by solid co-op. Most of all, it comes together as a grand adventure that hearkens back to sleepless nights buoyed by the roll of a die and a pad of grid paper shared between fellow dungeon crawlers.

Relatively small Larian Studios finally managed to deliver a really significant game. Original Sin is brimming with ideas on how to bring back old school RPG vibe and make it fit modern times. [Sept 2014, p.50]

As much as I loved the bulk of the game, by the end I was burning out, and burning out fast. Despite that, I'm glad that some studios are still willing to show an almost insane level of ambition in realizing the games they want to make without compromise, even if it does lead to a few dire moments here and there.
