I haven't been this engaged by or engrossed in a game in a very very long time. Truly a fantastic release, and hopefully the first of many. The only thing that drops my score from a perfect 10 are technical issues. Save often, it's not the most stable game currently, and if you're playing co-op you can expect desync and disconnection issues fairly often. These issues are a minor annoyance though, and do nothing to diminish the awesome time that this game provides.

    Unreal.

I couldn't imagine that a game like this would be made and released in the year 2014. Larian knocked it out of the park on every level AND gave us a level editor, so we can start making our own content.

Best cRPG in a decade. Nothing even comes close.

This game is on the top 10 list of my 30+ years of gaming. The intense care and attention to every detail, the level of freedom, the sheer amount of options you have to solve quests is mesmerizing. My only hope is that it will not finish quickly and there will be a lot of DLCs and mods. My hat is off to Larian Studios

I have not played an RPG this interesting . People say it is like Ultima VII. I wouldn't know, have never played any games in the Ultima series. It is the kind of game that gets me excited to explore, to see what is just around the corner. And, even in the starting zone, it manages to not disappoint. There is always something interesting to do, to see.

Oh, you can talk to animals. And like i always suspected cats are well spoken and dogs are lovable retards. 10/10. Have never played anything like it, and i can't get it out of my head. 10/10.

Also, there are so many average or even mediocre RPGs released in the recent years, so this game just shine like a diamond in a sea of sand.

Although sticking to the formulas of old classic RPGs, let alone the plague of technical issues and quest related bugs, this rushed game still need more polishing before it can be a great game with good experience to most players.

Here are the areas that need further polishing:
    - rock, paper, scissors argument system is just plain boring, it never comes close to the epic conversation of Bahdur's Gate
    - the self-talking mechanism between the main characters is just odd, it should have another ways to develop characters' social skill
    - there should be a general direction hint of what players should go, just like Divinity 2, so players will not just move to areas they are not supposed to go yet
    - traveling and picking up items are just chore, as it takes too many time and clicks
    - no balance of combat difficulty and the use of enviornment, tacticial variety should be allowed for player to pick from, but not a death is guaranteed if not following particular direction
    - equipment and character models should have a greater diversity
    - imbalance between quest types, there are just too many puzzle solving quests, and if not followed in particular orders, player will just get stuck
    - there are still improvement areas for how those puzzles are presented and solved
    - combat accuracy is too unreliable, resulting in just a save or load attempts, since enemies are generally overpowered
    - there should be more adjustment available for font size and camera angles

Overall, it can be a great game just like Divinity 2 in the past, once all the issues are sorted out, but again it may take around 2 years again.

Even extremely average RPG's such as DA:O were more to my taste. I regret buying this game and should have waited for Torment and Pillars of Eternity to be released. The character creation is completely lack luster with a one size fits all body type for each of the character, I hope to hell that this is just because it is in early access, the skills are also lacking not including basic skill choices such as dual wielding. The story is average at best although it is one of the stronger points of the game. There are some innovative features for this genre such as combining different elements much like in games like Magika. All in all I wouldn't buy this game yet. Expand

Great interactive world with an internal logic that lets you try all sorts of approaches to problems. Really really steep learning curve. Seriously you will likely scrap your initial party and restart after playing a couple hours. Read some online hints to avoid it. If you're a hardcore player you'll probably love it. If you're used to more forgiving modern RPGs you're in for some frustration.

The only unwieldy part seems to be the crafting system, which puts you into the role of Macgyver trying to figure out what you can combine with what, and if you need an anvil for this, or if you skill is high enough for that.

In short the game looks great, the fights challenging, the quests diverse, and the storyline engaging. This game will be a breath of fresh air for many if not all who play it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Divinity: Original Sin reminds me of why I love games. For over twenty years I have been a passionate gamer, and Like many adult gamers, I often fondly look back at games and the experiences that will stick with me for life. The games I look back with on with nostalgia aren't perfect, and neither is Divinity: Original Sin, but that's not what makes gaming great. If you are a gamer you will understand that unexplainable feeling of excitement and charm that truly makes the game perfect in your eyes. This is what Divinity: Original Sin is to me.

    The Good:
    - Beautiful World
    - Tons of exploration
    - Great story (often comical)
    - Amazing combat (I hated turn based combat before this game, so don't let that stop you)
    - Large amount of content (I spent 30 hours on the first section of the game)
    - Obviously a labor of love for Larian (A game for gamers by gamers)

    The Bad
    - Very rare stability issues
    - muddy textures up close
    - minor bugs
    - Strange difficulty spikes

It should be said that this is not the casual gamers RPG. Divinity: Original Sin can be very challenging at times, especially on harder difficulties. Encounters may require multiple attempts and careful planning to overcome. The same can be said with the many environmental puzzles/secrets in the world. Finally, there is no quest guidance, you explore, discover, and complete without any "go here to complete quest" arrows. the difficulty and lack of hand holding is refreshing, and adds to the games value. Like I said before, Divinity: Original sin is not a perfect game, but it is truly rare gaming experience that should be experienced by every RPG fan out there.

I gotta say, I am so glad I was a backer of this game. Originally I was hesitant and a little apprehensive at backing a Kickstarter game because it was my first and I had read about other projects that failed and people lost their money. But considering how much I enjoyed the original, and a few of their subsequent games. I was willing to take a chance. And I'm glad I did.

For anyone who longs for the days of the Ultima series, or the Baldurs Gate/Icewind Dale (Planescape too) series of Isometric PC games, this is it. Larian has crafted a true successor to those games. Since it's release, I have been playing it almost constantly (all through 4th of July weekend). It has depth and character and is a joy to play. It's challenging too. Even on the normal level, you'll be challenged by the enemies and bosses. Learning which Player Character types do what and using their skills to the fullest is a must. Likewise, learning which enemies do what and what their skills are are also a must.

The graphics are beautiful (running this on highest settings) and detailed. The game (so far) runs smooth and I have had no crashes. Though I have had the occasional (not game breaking) bug (one bug was sometimes not costing anything to repair gear at a vendor), so far and overall, the game is pretty polished. I will say the limited camera rotation frustrated me to no end. There is an option for full 360 degree rotation, but enabling it comes with a warning that the single player campaign was not designed for it and could cause graphical glitches (or something to that affect). I took a chance and enabled it and I'm glad I did. I have yet to run into any noticeable graphical issues. Having the full camera rotation is so much nicer. Include the Co-op and toolkit and you have a game well worth the Steam price. For those of us who backed it at the lower tiers, we made out like bandits. :D

I really can't recommend this game enough. It brought back fond memories of those early RPGs and I found myself lost in the game and losing track of time once again, something I have't done playing a game in a long time.

It draws heavily from old masterpieces like Ultima or the Baldur's Gate serie, giving the player a world to explore and enjoy. It feels like a real, living world and there are a lot of quests and stories all around, dozens of things to do, from crafting to fighting to investigating a murder and so on, all interspersed with excellent dialogues and a nice enough backstory: you could spend hours just exploring and talking to NPCs and you'll always want more.
It's a party based RPG, you'll make two characters - and can recruit two more or play coop with a friend - and they could have different personalities based on your liking, so they can end up bickering and bantering all throughout the game.
The combat is awesome, very tactic, hard but not frustrating with a clever use of magic combinations which can turn the tide of a difficult fight.
The classes are very customizable, you can decide to take every single skill or abilty with any character, leading to a very open game experience.
Technically, it's good but not something jaw-dropping. The engine is light and runs well even on old computers, the graphics are good, clean and easy readable and the magic effects are appropriate but not too uselessly flashy so you rarely get confused in the action. The music is also good and it never gets annoying.

    The flaws:
I really feel the need for a "undo" button, even if there's the problem that it could be abused (but you can also abuse save/load and the fleeing mechanic, so...). Too often I click on an enemy and get a misclick, moving my character where I don't want him to go. Also, finding the right spot for backstabbing is a tremendous pain.
Another useful thing would have been more keybinds... the classic shift+1,+2,+3 for the quickbars and one for trading with the npcs... I would have mapped many more things.
I don't really like the random loot. It's silly in a game with predefined encounters and no respawning enemies.
Sometimes it's very slow. The wait times on save/quicksave/load/transition van be insanely long.
Also I personally detest the rock/paper/scissor... it's a terrible way to handle the arguments and kills immersion (also it always looks like the PC is cheating which - true or false - it's annoying).
And, more than everything, a full world like in the Ultima games would have been fantastic, instead of a series of maps like it is.

But those are just minor flaws, and all in all, it's undoubtedly one of the best RPGs of the last years: it's an awesome game that is making hard to turn off my PC.

I wont **** and moan on the state of gaming right now, but I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling like I am being used, patronized, and financially milked by the empty, shallow cookie-cutter games we are offered these days.
As far as my review of the game goes I really only have good things to say. Its an incredibly engrossing world, with interesting stories and interesting characters, that keeps you wanting to play; NOT through cheap tactics like we see in Diablo clones, MMO's, or other gear-treadmill/unlocks type shenanigans, but because of genuine desire.
I know, I know, how can I not find anything wrong? That's impossible right? Wrong. Honestly, Ive not experienced any bugs or crashes of any sort in the short 40 hours I have spent in-game so far. The game was ready to come out of Early Access. (FYI the devs have not stopped to rest and have been hot on the case post release, with updates and fixes).
Who knows, maybe I'm unable to be critical because I've been totally enchanted by it all. Jumping from a solo play-thru to a co-op play-thru (on 2 separate profiles, and I've nowhere near finished the game on either) I am pleased with both, and we only have more to look forward to in the form of developer content and player created mods.
I highly recommend Divinity: Original Sin to lovers of authentic cRPG's with intelligent design, or if you just fancy trying something new to you, this is a great place to start!

GRAPHICS- Probably the fist thing you notice when starting up a new game, and in this games case the visuals are a nice mix between Diablo 3 and perhaps something like Kingdom of Amalur. The textures are nice and the character models are sharp enough, but the environment / visual effects are very good.

STORY- Your standard fare of fantasy "chosen one" plot lines, with some very interesting side quests and companions and reminded me of dragon age origins. The companion interactions are similar to Mass Effect and alot of your decisions have effects on the story and characters around you.

GAMEPLAY- Turn based, like Xcom. So there is inherently a good amount of tactics involved, many spells to chose from and buffs/debuffs come into play big time. You can move items around in the environment and the elements work with each other (water and electricity for example) and this really creates the feeling that you are looking into a little box with your character and the world in it as opposed to just playing a video game.

CONCLUSION- This is a very indepth game that has strong rewards and consequences, which many modern games lack (Skyrim). Also, this game is certainly for anyone who enjoys a good story and good characters (dragon age, witcher 2) as well as people who like games that dont hold your hand( Dark Souls). Finally, if for some reason you expect this to be an action game you are wrong, this a a compelling game with good humor, characters, story, gameplay, visuals and an all around solid title. 9.5/10

If you are a fan of Baulder's Gate and the Ultima games, this one is for you!

I've got about 20 hours in the game of which 15 hours of it is in multiplayer and we haven't had any major problems. No crashes to desktop, no lost connections. Just small bugs like some items not displaying correctly (item still shows as broke after repaired until I trade it). Nothing game break or big.

I want to say a big THANK YOU to the developers for making a game like this! When Bioware can go from making the great games that it made in the past to making games like Dragon Age 2, it is a sign that these types of games are hard to get made.

To be fare I haven't finished it but it is hard to imagine something happening by the end of the game to make me change my mind about the game.

Congratz to Larian Studios for making a great game!

Personally, I love the game, but hate the turn-based combat. I liked, and played to death, games like the Black Isle games (Baldur's Gate series, Planescape: Torment and my favorites, Fallout I and II). But let's face it people, gaming has moved on. Real time came, and I loved it even more. The first Divinity game, Divine Divinity, I LOVED it. It was one of the most fun RPG's I ever played. Larian is a fantastic studio, that can make great RPG's that however often slightly miss the mark. Slightly, just below the bulls eye.

Original Sin looks great, but it is just trying to hard to be "old school" to be more fun than a game like Divine Divinity. Movement is sluggish and slow, as is the combat. Yes, I know it's "about tactics" (not really), and it's not "dumbed down" (it is kind off...), and "you have to be smart to win" (not really, you just need to understand the game mechanics), but I don't really like it. The game just doesn't feel as fun as many other RPG's I've played, especially the combat is kind of disappointing. Everything else is just swell, but I can't nearly justify a 10 because for me a game hits the spot in all marks except the combat.

    Pro's:

    - Looks and feels great.
    - Tons of stuff to explore, steal, sell, abuse, etc.
    - Humour, most of it actually funny!
    - Emersive
    - Nice amount of, if somewhat boring, loot.

    Cons:

    - The game is slowwwwwww... Movement, and combat. An easy way to make a game last longer of course, but still...
    - Turn-based combat. But I guess that is personal.
    - Story isn't great.

I would have given this game a 9/10, if the combat wasn't turn-based (you know, for that "old skool" feel the oldies always complain about). Now it's a very solid 7,5/10.

Cons: the way the game handles the main characters is somewhat bad for the online stuff. I play this together with a friend of mine and the hosts gets to build both characters and only he keeps the saves. I find this rather odd in a very well made game that is based on coop.
Middle ground: the graphic and the animations looks extremely nice, but I don't really dig the cartoony style. Also the music sometimes exceptionally cool, but sometimes gets extremely out of space (happy whacky-looney in middle of combat for example)

All together I'm very happy to play with this one it is a really nice game! I would recommend it for everyone who really likes oldchool rpgs with LOTS of dialogues.

This does not at all; it's combat is brutally hard without the use of tactics and it gives you no indicator whatsoever where to go for your quests. Questing in it is far more akin to Baldur's Gate or Morrowind, and that's incredibly refreshing.

The dialog is funny and plentiful; it is not limited by having every single line voice acted. The systems it uses for combat are fairly intuitive if you have any experience with tabletop gaming. The quests are interesting. The world is interesting, and you can do more to manipulate it in the starting town then you can do for the entirety of the last 5 Bioware games you care to name.

Buy it if you love RPG's, get ready for a headache and being forced to re-examine how to play them if you love RPG's and are under 20 years old.

The battle system may be the best in any computer role playing game ever created. The combination of a full set of modern features, including attacks of opportunity, with an initiative / action point system, free movement and a highly polished user interface is a joy to play and strategize with.

However, what truly sets the game apart is the versatility in terms of player agency which it offers. Ideas which you might never even consider in other games, or which might not even be possible to attempt, are not only possible to execute but actually . This level of interactivity, combined with the very well developed system of elemental area effects and their interaction, allows for an almost infinite number of possibilities for solving situations, both in battles and during exploration.

Everything from the turn-based combat with reactive environments; to the characters and humor and lore; to the exploration and immense satisfaction of completing areas . . . Original Sin is almost perfect.

The only real issue I have found is NPC chatter is somewhat repetitive and happens during conversations. That's it. I know Larian will fix that in a patch at some point though, so that's why Divinity gets a 10 from me.

the few dungeons are small, and the explodings traps just irritating

zoom in is needless cause no tilting of the camera
and many atmosphere things how missing animals, day and night are missing,

u cant explore the map outside cause of the lvlcap of the monsters( to strong, 3 lvl difference u die after one hit from an orc), the map is too small for , so the game is very linear,
i dont see the open world, u can only decide how u get some things(jack murder), if u break in or steal or talk with an animal
maps look big, but isnt, u just move slow, there is not much
decisions have no effect, just if u fight or not most time, but most not memorable
if u are lvl 10 u saw almost all skills, the spellcasting is slow, especially summoning, but many spells too,
the town is under attack, but u have not feeling for this
looting many things after fight makes me tired, scroll in postion when moving the same,
i dont know how people needed 30 hours for the first map, i have read all text, i have all quest, i played on hard after lvl 5 and needed 15hours, i wanted try more fights, so I killed all soldiers in the town, this was a nice, but short fun, know i stop playing, i have no motivation, i hoped i would be better, but after the fights were no challenging I see no reason, and i am afraid of another long boring text- and walk-quest with no surprises

yes its a low budget production and it could be I`m to critical, but 10/10 is
    greatly exaggerated
is think the 80% of the budget went into the editor and technique, the rest seems like a better mod
who have fun with stealing and find chests could have fun, but who wants decisions which influence the charakter
or story, or surpisings storyscripts or fights not only from one side, or an enemy which counter and debuff or stun u or focus ur mages, or want nice endbosses or great dungeons or explore the world or a nice story, then dont play the game, humor and small decisions are not enough, the game is nothing against bg2 or nwn 2(think about the potentiality these days)

Pros have been mentioned ad nauseum. It does have deep tactictal combat that uses the environment and has challenging AI. Many battles requires creative use of the map for success.

But the cons can be frustrating. The camera does not rotate more than ~20 degrees which renders it useless. Finicky mouse detection makes clicking enemies, picking up items, and other activities a chore. Agonizingly slow, slow character walk speed. The UI lacks obvious shortcuts so everything requires too many clicks. Dialogue of quantity rather than quality. Lack of waypoint quest markers practically guarantees you'll be stumbling into overleveled enemies. If your party is too far away from your scout when the battle begins, you cannot rally them to battle. Fixed enemy levels means you will be exploring the world in a fairly linear fashion. Many obvious gameplay elements like these just ruin the experience.

Combat can definitely be satisfying in this game. But the forgettable dialogue and characters, clunky UI, and general design flaws makes playing the game an unnecessary chore.

The only thing which does upset me is the lack of an informative journal. Which is what made the older RPGs so great, studying your journal to find out what to do next was often one of the best experiences of the older RPGs, sadly this isn't present in D:OS. The vague journal can often leave you very puzzled and stuck, but still it doesn't detract from the overall experience of the game. The best thing is by far the combat. It's well done for turnbased, the elements and all their weaknesses and strengths definitely always leave you on the balls of your feet and make each fight unique and interesting. Using water spells to wet your enemies, followed by an electric spell to stun them is one of the few combinations you can use in combat to your advantage.

The graphics are amazing as well, especially for a kickstarter game, like holy **** It looks better than almost anything on Xbox One and PS4 at the moment and it's not even that technically impressive, it just looks really really good.

    1. The sense of exploration. DOS is a rich world full of hidden treasures. For example you can get around 6000 gold worth of stuff from the Legion Warehouse that you encounter soon after beating the tutorial. It's near the burning ship. You will need to kill the legion guards (fight will be pretty hard) around the warehouse. You will also need Unlock Magic Door scroll (for some reason I had one, don't know how I got it but whatever!). Go in and you will find great equipment and plates that can be sold for a ton of money. Stuff like this just makes me so excited for a game.

    2. The combat is amazing. I just LOVE the combat. It's kind of like playing a game of Magic the Gathering, where you spend "mana" to cast spells, walk around, attack with your sword, etc. The magic system is well thought out, with elements interacting with one another. Fights are TOUGH and you will need to use tactics and your environment to your advantage.

    3. It's like reading a good novel. This game does a great job of immersing you into the world though dialogue.

    4. The game doesn't hold your hand. Quests are text only. You will have to listen to the dialogue and look at your journal to have a clue what the hell is going on.

    5. The music is really really good. All of my roommates have commented on how good the music is while I'm playing the game.

The cons of this game are only "inconveniences" that can be fixed in future patches like inventory management and some clunky controls. Seriously, the core game design itself is simply perfect. And I'm not trying to overhype this game, I think it deserves the hype and the glowing reviews.

If you belong to the gaming elitists who think that gaming is something that needs to consume you and all your time, then you'll probably like this game a lot. Divinity will certain consume a lot of your time. But if you just see gaming as a multimedia device, similar to movie, you'll find the pacing of divinity to be very slow -- even slower then your average RPG. I'm a big fan of RPGs, both electronic and table RPG like D&D. This game is very, very close to a modern table RPG. You're free to do whatever you want in Divinity's world, the combat feels great, the story is pretty decent, the key characters are well written and even the random NPCs aren't simply copy pasted, even if they're similar, they do have their own small differences in the way they walk and react.

Now for the issues, the game can feel quite clumsy and slow at the beginning. I started two games on Beta and now that the game is out it's my third time restarting the game with my lover. I got used and the game feels really smooth, the combat is way more fluid and the possibilities widen as you master the game's rules and mechanics.

One common flaw in turn based tactical games is the combat is just not tactical enough. D:OS does an amazing job with their skill system combined with the environmental dangers on the battlefield. I found wasn't doing well until I was utilizing the environment in almost every battle, and it is awesome.

Co-op games are so easy to set up! I had 0 issues getting my friend in my game and its fast every game. If I had one issue with the game it comes in this category though. Conversations started by one person is difficult and sometimes not observable by the other player. I want to see that amazing story too!

Are there bugs? Yes, but nothing gamebreaking and not many considering it just released. The one bug I kept encountering they fixed in one of their 4 small patches in 4 days anyways. I love knowing the devs won't wait forever to patch this game.

Goes without saying that the game has a few minor bugs or loading issues, because as a matter of fact the game despite alfa and beta was RUSHED(they just couldn't postpone any longer). Larian on its part is working only on fixing those bugs for the moment, it doesn't have other open projects and the constant updating, although for some tedious, shows that they are doing their best to fix whatever needs fixing. The game is not completely voiced and for people used to full-voiced games and very few books that can be a drag immersion-wise; the lack of full voicing was due to the fact that the game was expanded till the last minute before release, and since the voicing is the last part of the game-making any further voicing would have delayed the game release by a huge deal. Around 25% of the musics comes from old Larian games and half of the remaining was not specifically made for the game. This happened cause the author fell ill during the production and it was thought best to maintain unity rather than hire somebody else. Since most of the low rate reviews was on these issues I thought I might shed some light on the matter, Larian isn't a big-time production house, 1/4 of their founding came from kickstarters while the rest was a huge leap of faith on their part, a make it or break it kind of effort if you will. They took a small sector game(in the last years) such as cRPGs and jumped through hoops to make it as main-stream as they could, single-handedly taking the genre forward about 10 years. It is not a casual gamer kind of game, it forces you to read often more than most are willing to do, and it's not completely polished. Some said that the graphic is good and as a matter of fact it is, although the textures are often low quality, they did a lot of managing with the money and time they had and they achieved what they strived for, the game has an overall good feeling with as little as possible. D:OS doesn't deserve a 10 because it's the pinnacle of RPGs or because it showed a new way of doing things. It deserves the maximum score because it took an old formula left on the shelf for too long and without aid managed to make it viable in the year 2014.

I'll leave you with a few numbers to make you understand why D:OS and Larian deserve 10/10 on this game:
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: production costs 85 million dollars.
And although i have no numbers on the dragon age games one thing is for sure, their costs were well above 20 million dollars(i am keeping myself tight here)
The witcher 2 10 million dollars(which was considered an insanely tight budget for the end result)
Larian scraped up 3 million dollars plus 1 million of kickstarter during production for a total of 4 million dollars.

They really outdid themselves with what they had, therefore this game sets a standard of quality for small houses and in my opinion the hiccups here and there can be forgiven. The 10 is not only for the game per-se that would still deserve a 9 as it is now but for how much was made with what little they had, I can but hope they'll make a **** of sales because I can't wait for their next game and I seriously hope the budget is gonna be less of an issue next time.

This game does not deserve a 0/10 and it certainly does not deserve a 10/10 either. Divinity: Original Sin is an homage to the top-down RPG's of old, taking major hints from the Bioware hits Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights. But does it really measure up? If you ask me, it comes damn close but misses by a thread's hair.

    Let's break it down:

Maps. The maps are huge and there is no loading in between interior and exterior environs. The graphics, for this type of game, are great. Probably the best I have personally seen in this genre. They don't just look good, but they're really well designed as well. The terrain has a natural flow to it, it's up and down, not just flat surfaces like you would find in the previously mentioned RPG's.

Music. Is great. It's thematic, it of high quality and all around just works. The sound effects are likewise done well. That's all I really have to say about that.

Story? Well, let's just say the story isn't winning any points in originality, the setting itself is your standard high fantasy fair. It actually sort of reminds me of the "rift" universe. In aesthetics, design and theme. As suggested by the title of the game there are underlying religious tones (it's got the typical Tolkien inspired "good vs ultimate evil" story) though I am not far enough in the game yet to make a real judgement.

The writing is good, GOOD. But the game is not winning a Pulitzer (or even a Hugo). Dialogue is generally well written, if a little clichéd. It's more or less what you'd expect to find in a fantasy themed MMO (yes I realize this game is not an MMO, I'm just comparing the dialogue). There are only voice-effects for ambient dialogue, entering into a conversation is text only, so I hope you like reading (luckily, I do!) or mashing "1" to get through the dialogue options as quickly as possible. Exploration is highly encouraged and rewarded, in both items and experience. Seeking out every lonely corner of the map to search for treasure and baddies to kill is a must if you want to find the gear to outfit your party.

Gameplay - Generally, aside from a few nit picks, the game play is decent. It doesn't really contain anything I haven't seen done (better, in some cases) in other games but it's solid and pretty fun. The only real downside is the excessive "difficulty" and I put difficulty in quotations for a reason. It's difficulty stems largely from the fact that you are always at a disadvantage, and usually, it's an artificial disadvantage. Certainly the AI does not seem to have the same limits on action points and thus each "unit" tends to be capable of doing more / turn than your party. But generally the fights are exciting and you never really know which way they will go. There were many times I thought I had a fight in the bag only to be thwarted by having my healer focus fired and decimated. The AI doesn't seem fabulous, but it's not riding the short bus either (*cough* Rome2 *cough*).

The game tries to develop relations between characters (a la Dragon Age), however, none of the characters - That I have found - really have much of a character and those that do are stunningly simplistic. The only real PC I have come across that seems to have much in the way of a personality is the Warrior Madora.... Who only stands out because of the illogical and excessive bigotry this character seems to have towards anything and everything for reasons that are so far completely unexplained. The party social interactions sort of miss the mark, in my opinion. Dragon Age was such that the characters were fully developed, each had their own idiosyncrasies and background you could delve into through conversation. Personally, I grew attached to certain characters in Dragon Age and hate others. Dragon Age, in my opinion, was a break through in player immersion. The social/romance options and the fallout that came from them were, in a way, revolutionary. This was definitely helped by the fact that, true to Bioware standard, every line was voiced. You could hear the passion (or lackthereof), the cynicism and positivity of the characters according to their personalities. Divinity tries to accomplish this in various ways but falls disappointingly short. Anyone like me, who will take immersion over gameplay will feel this aspect of Divinity is a little lacking.

Given that this is by an indie studio, however, this is perfectly understandable. They obviously don't have the resources of Bioware.

    Overall?

I'd recommend this game to any fans of NWN / BG. It's good, it's fun, it has a lot going for it... But it's not the epic perfection that the Metacritic reviews make it out to be.

The combat is quite difficult, requiring some saving and loading, which is a staple of older games like this, but perhaps not so welcome now. However, a properly balanced party could probably reason things through and work out that, for example, rain would hamper the efforts of a fire demon.

The duration of the single player campaign is excellent, with lots of different things to do and see. Overall a worthy game, which promises to soak up lots of time without any grinding or RNG abuse.

However, this game needs more work. I would wait with buying this if i was you because a lot of what makes an RPG fun and exciting is missing here and there. Voice acting on a lot of the important characters you meet is not there and you have to read a lot of text instead. Its not catastrophic to have to read, but it takes away immersion. The music, although well done, i feel is not fitting in many places as well. Meeting with the woman of time for example the music was a combo between lounge piano and spanish guitar music which felt weird. I expected something more fantasy/epic and a voice to listen to. That would have drawn me into the story and moment much more (immersion).

Another thing is the rush of gear looking the same.I found a lot of rare weapons and armor and a lot of them look like the armor and weapon you find in barrels or buy from people. The stats are there and they are what counts of course, but in RPGs you want to feel progression both through story and gear. You want to see that you get stronger and stronger. At least i feel the rare gear could have had a special look from common gear. So far a lot of the magical gear have had at least an effect to them even though they also looked the same as common gear. Hopefully they improve on this through updates. For me its too late though.

The three negative points above is what stops me from playing it constantly since if they were all ok i wouldnt stop until i finished it because it is a very good game. You can see the amount of work that is in the details, i just wish they took more time before release

Still i give this a 7/10 which means very good. There arent many (or any) RPG atm with this much awesome in it, and you should definitely buy it, but maybe wait a little bit (if you can).

Therefore, the game is now nearly updated at a daily basis, but unfortunately there are more and more bugs discovered by the community as the game is on sale now.

Sometimes there is voice and sometimes not, which is kind of weird, and thus gives it a 9 instead of a 10.

An essential game to own if you like Turn based RPGs.

Rock paper scissors. Really?

My biggest disappointment and at the same time, great laughter though, was that how my 2 hulking warriors could not take down a thin, wooden glass door with 3 greatswords and 2 halberd axes. Initially planning to break in and steal some stuff in a deserted house, the door got down to 40% before all of my weapons broke, leaving me with a slightly damaged nigh invulnerable door and huge expenses in weapon repairs and that's just pathetic for any RPG standard.

Yes, I am well aware that you can pick locks but unfortunately, my character specialized in lockpicking did not deem it necessary to bring any lockpicks on his grand journey and nor did any of the 52 NPC's I've traded with or the dozens of houses I robbed have any. These may seem like small complaints, and from some aspects of view, they are. But really, the biggest offense here was how I tried to derail from the generic path at the first city and was met with only opponents more than 3 times my level, which I either had to abuse-win by packing oil barrels and letting them explode in their faces or get instantly wiped out even with the best gear humanly possible.

Long story short, this game has a long way to go and It's really quite the embarassment to be called a release with patch after patch after patch confirming this.

Created an account just to write a review for this. The game is brilliant, it has everything I've always hoped for in an RPG and its the first game to achieve that. Even if 'all' the parts doesn't live up to their full potential, the fact that it has -all- the parts is enough that this game stands not just on its own merit, but lifts the bar for other RPG's to follow!

It had a somewhat sketchy launch at 30-06-2014, but as of right now (04-07-2014), 5 days later of launch, it already received a large number of hotfixes and updates to make the game even more polished and realy feels 100% as an AAA title in full right.

Game is funny, full of exploration surprises, RPG elements realy interesting but not boring, combat is turned based but surprisingly fast and fun.

I do believe that most (if not all) people complaining of negative ratings on this game must either have terribly optimized PC software/hardware or realy hate true RPGs not feeling them "action" enough.

This game does not hand-hold you telling everytime where to go. There is no skyrim-like button you can press to know to way to go nor a mapmarker to tell you where to go next. There is no giant popups on screen telling you that an NPC wants to give you a quest on the next corner nor a glowing UI telling there is an object that needs to be picked up. Everything is done by exploring, conversating with NPCs, having "feelings" and "suspicious" that something is strange there and investigate.

If you are used to games like diablo3 that is loot, loot, loot, kill, kill, kill, you will be disapointed with this game, it's more like older games that realy rewarded you for being inteligent, inquisitive, explorer and curious. In a sense it's not an interactive movie, but a treasure-finding game in every corner.

Unfortunately, this latest gamming generation of people is more about easy and quick satisfaction instead of working towards a hidden goal that needs to use the brain, so probably you will find a lot of negative people saying that its "slow" or "non-intuitive" or "no quest markers, zomg!" or "no full voice textz, i need to readz, it's so 10 years ago, zomgz!".

Don't play this game as an easy hack-n-slash expecting to end the game in 10 hours and get over with it, this is a game that will probably take you over 40hours if you are new to the (real)RPG elements and if you enjoy exploring and experiencing most of the hidden stuff.

Also, there is the toolkit for the game engine that the developer released with the game, basically meaning that fans can build free content, mods that will probably change anything you might not fully enjoy in the game, etc. At the launch price with all this stuff, it's a given good value.

As of now, i'm over 10 hours in the game, but i keep going back to see if i missed some corner unexplored and i still have some quests i', not sure how to proceed, but i'm folowing "gut-feelings" of where they might be.

Bottom line: For an RPGer, i believe this is probably the best game launched in the last 10 years, probably only Dragon Age: Origins might be close behind.
For a non-RPGer, it's harder to predict if you'll like it. You might love it, you might not. But if you have cash i highly recomend you try it because it's a potential "life-remembering" game.

You can argue or agree with your friends over moral dilemmas either in real life or with the game persuasion system.
You can let your friend empty the pocket of every merchants in town while you talk your way through a quest.
You can think together to the best way to handle a battle.
Or simply laugh together at silly dialogues, unexpected result of world interaction - "Oh **** there was a small puddle of water on the ground" - and marvel at the sheer amount of stuff to do.

When i started playing game just sucked me into beautiful world and interesting stories. Turn based combat is fun, smooth, challenging and amount of diversity in character creating offers many interesting builds to play with.

Many thanks to Larian for what is till now a really awesome game! Needless to say it will most likely take place as my best RPG of 2014.

Without doubt one of the best RPGs i'v played in a long time. Reminds me a lot of old gems like Baldur's gate, though it does not use the same (AD&D) rules but went in a different way. And that is a good thing, the combat is very intense even though it is turn based. Every choice matters and you will likely spend some time pondering which spell to use next or what target to attack. And that is a good thing, the combat is very intense even though it is turn based. Every choice matters and you will likely spend some time pondering which spell to use next or what target to attack. With the right strategy, previously impossible fights turn out to be easy and you will soon feel powerful enough to venture further. But don't worry, this is not just about combat. The world feels alive and exploring it brings you rewards in terms of loot, quests and even some easter eggs here and there. I spent perhaps 30 hours in game so far and I look forward to playing much more in the coming weeks. Quests are fun and clever, mostly there are more ways how to complete them and your actions have consequences that can be seen and felt.

There are however also still some bugs and a few areas might require some polish. I did not encounter any game breaking bugs at all though i saw some annoying glitches - being unable to pickup some loot I had to reload once. Good thing the game keeps several quicksave and autosave slots so i would not worry about savegame corruption. Personally i didn't encounter such issues. Also the "journal" which keeps track of your progress in quests tends to be a bit confusing which is also true for the list of possible teleportation locations. These are however just minor annoyances that can be hopefully fixed in future updates.

All that said, it would be a huge mistake to miss this game. It offers a lot of content and fun things to do (did i mention crafting your own gear? ), it has nice graphics and awesome music. Larian did an outstanding job and i hope they deliver us more games in the future.

Just a handful of points mar a perfect score. There are still some bugs and unfinished bits here and there, which are disappointing. NPC banter is loud, repetitive and annoying. Some balancing issues exist, making a few character aspects or abilities too good. Nothing worth avoiding this gem of a game over, however!

People are quick to groan at Divinity Original Sin being a turn based RPG but my god the turn based in this game is fun and well in depth. You can experiment like drowsing enemies in water and then using electricity to electrocute them, so using elements plays a big role in the game.

As for creating your character, you can customize their looks and also selects their stats and skills. On skill PetPal let's you talk to animals which will give you hints on your mission and also help you find hidden items. The music in the game is incredible, very different from your usual RPG music, does not sound generic, really stands out.

Story is not your usual generic "must safe the world" or "you are the chosen one!" type story, it starts off as a murder mystery which you are trying to solve. It's not all what it seems and it starts to build up throughout the game.

As for length of the game, it's a very long game because of how much depth it has. First town alone can take 20 hours to complete and there's another town that takes that same amount, there are also other smaller towns so overall it's easily a 50+ hour RPG game.

Having played Dark Souls 2, South Park: Stick of Truth and Shadowrun: Dragonfall, I gotta say Divinity Original Sin outshines every single of those games. And that is saying a lot because those were good to great games too.But Divinity: Original Sin really outdoes it with it's content and exploration, non of those games can match it in that regard. Do yourself a favor and get this game, you won't regret it.

BTW You can play it with co-op online if you want. It surprising works very well, the host of the game is the one who saves the game and can continue to play it without the co-op partner if he/she isn't available. The co-op partner can drop in/out at anytime. When someone is in battle the partner if he/she is in another place the game doesn't pause, he/she can continue exploring the world, even getting into their own battles etc, so each person is free to do whatever they want without restrictions.

While the game has some technical issues they have been continuing fixed by the developer on a daily basis. Other devs it would have taken weeks, so expect this game to have great support from Larian (dev).

Giving it a 10 because it's one of those games that hasn't been made in years and it far exceeded my expectations.

Breath of fresh air with elements from Baldur's Gate, Ultima, Final Fantasy Tactics, Dungeons and Dragons, and Dragon Age. SCORE 95/100.

Truly challenging, deep, immersive, and entertaining. It does not hold your hand in any way and is not for casual gamers. Old school RPG fans will need a change of underwear.

It's a conscious decision on Larian's part to resurrect tried-and-true threads that run deep into the bones of the CRPG genre. It's a culmination of those efforts and an unapologetic celebration of battle-tested concepts backed by solid co-op. Most of all, it comes together as a grand adventure that hearkens back to sleepless nights buoyed by the roll of a die and a pad of grid paper shared between fellow dungeon crawlers.

As much as I loved the bulk of the game, by the end I was burning out, and burning out fast. Despite that, I'm glad that some studios are still willing to show an almost insane level of ambition in realizing the games they want to make without compromise, even if it does lead to a few dire moments here and there.
