I played this game beginning to end and finished much (70-80%) of the side quests. I played through the game with dual Lone-Wolf on the hardest difficulty to get the best possible experience. I have about 100 hours invested in the game as of the writing of this review. Here is a quick rundown of the pro's and cons from my play through.

*RPG Element - The RPG element of the game is deep and well fleshed out. This is a break of fresh air considering how shallow and watered down RPG games have been over the past 10 years.
*Strategy Element - This isn't a run in and destroy everything type of game. Strategy is very much required and with the interaction with environment and very large skill trees it makes for dynamic and rich strategic combat. Even with a perfectly built out team, best gear, best skills/spells, without implementing good strategy you will get destroyed
*No Grind - One of the first RPGs I have ever played where you don't grind and yet you make it through the game trying to stay ahead of the difficulty curve. Monsters don't re-spawn which means you can level beyond the monster which keeps the game tough, but it also eliminates the type of grinding required in 99% of all RPGs.
Rewarding Battles - This is a combination of all of the above, most battles, even small trash mob type battles took me anywhere from 15-60 minutes to complete. Again the game puts an emphasis on strategy and instead of grinding the same mob hundreds of times for hours, you fight 1 mob 1 time but they make sure you work for it and you get rewarded as if you had been grinding it for hours.
Rich World - The world is rich and vibrant. Some of the world feels bright and happy while other parts are dark and foreboding. The developers did a great job at drawing you deep into the game both through story telling and developing a world so real you forget you are playing a game.
*Good Skill Tree/Loot - The game doesn't shower you in uber gear but it also doesn't keep it out of reach. You feel like you find good gear just often enough to make it rewarding but not so often that it becomes meaningless. My only complain here is that is errs a little to much to the side of being too stingy with gear. There were times where I would go 20-30 hours of gameplay before I found that better pair of gloves. Also there are plenty of well flesh out skill trees. You learn different skill trees, mix and match and try and find the best synergies between different trees. Because of that there is an almost unlimited number of unique character builds.

I could probably list another half dozen minor things but those are the major pro's that stand out. My only complaint of this game is that the story line starts strong in the beginning but because a bit shallow and far fetched towards the end. Also the graphics are merely "ok". Although the game does have very nice looking spell animation. Overall any minor cons of this game are all but forgotten with all of the good it has going for it.

It's a breath of fresh air to once again play a real RPG in the 21st century

    Cons:
-Very long loading times (although maybe that is my rubbish laptop's fault)
-The item-management system can feel a bit clunky and time consuming
-Many of the game's aspects are poorly explained, or not even explained at all! There were countless times that I was genuinely stuck, and had to consult online guides. (Although this may be a bonus for hardcore RPG fans

    Overall:
Divinity: Original Sin is a breath of fresh air in a market driven by generic shooters. Difficult, time-consuming, but ultimately great fun, this game will satisfy RPG veterans and newcomers alike.

Turn-based battle system is what makes this game GREAT! It’s really requires strategic thinking, careful use of element magic, use of skills and a lot of damage control against enemies’’ actions. Some battles are long and frustrating, though they are always rewarding.

Graphics is nice, nothing special, but it’s enough to enjoy fantasy setting and use of magic.

I think it’s must have for old-school RPG lovers.

It IS a decent game, but it's marred by some serious flaws resulting from some poor design choices. Given the fact that there were apparently 20,000 kickstarter backers, it's strange that these obvious issues are still in the final release.

    The good:
    - It's a party-based CRPG with turn-based combat.
    - Nice twist on the genre, with an interesting mix of elemental effects that complement each other. Oil burns; water puts out fires but creates steam; water conducts electricity etc. This adds a whole new element to combat, elevating it beyond the more traditional "ice monster = fire attack".
    - There's various moments that require role-playing, where your two (main) characters can express their opinion and influence their character traits. Different traits can give you distinctive perks when high enough.
    - Overall it's great fun to play whenever you forget about the flaws (see below).

    The bad:
    - The game is actually very linear. Sure, you can explore areas outside the city that aren't part of the main storyline at the beginning, but only if you don't mind instadeath whenever you meet enemies.
    - The camera can only be rotated 90 degrees, which makes it really hard to see things obscured by the scenery or to target enemies. You can toggle between top-down and pseudo-isometric view, but that doesn't really solve the problem.
    - Targeting is extremely finicky and requires pixel-perfect precision. Move your mouse one pixel between targeting and clicking and your warrior will waste half their action points walking all the way around an enemy, while giving the enemy a free attack of opportunity in the process. Combine this with the limited camera and given how tough some of the combat is, this is EXTREMELY frustrating and can turn the tide of the battle.
    - Inventory management is poor, and the trade interface is a shining example of how not to design a game. Only ONE member of your party can trade at once. That nice new spell you wanted to buy for your mage? Turns out your mage is 4 gold short after adding all his loot to the barter screen. Want to add 4 gold from another character? No problem. All you need to do is leave the trade screen. Transfer the 4 gold to your mage, and the reinitiate trade and add all the items again. The most bizarrely frustrating and useless change to the tried-and-tested party based trade in every other CRPG ever. It makes the inventory management in the unpatched Jagged Alliance: Back in Action seem almost sane, and that was terrible. At least JA: BIA got a patch, AFAICT this isn't going to happen with D: OS.
    - Speaking of trading, another major annoyance is that trading is further complicated by virtue of the fact that irrespective of which character you have selected to trade with, gear in the shop is always compared to the gear worn by the character that initiated the conversation with the shopkeeper. Start conversation with your fighter, switch to your mage and then mouse over a robe, only to see that, yes, the robe isn't suited to your fighter. Solution: cancel and restart trade again. I can only assume that this is a bug... but it sure is annoying.
    - Lack of quest markers and lack of information on what you need to do next to advance the game. Yes you have a journal, no it isn't helpful. After pointlessly walking around town talking to everyone 192029 times, you'll find yourself reading the walkthroughs rather than wasting your time, which is always a pity.

In essence, if you like CRPGs and can look past some of the frustrating design flaws, you'll probably get your money's worth, just be aware that the game isn't flawless and isn't the best CRPG ever. The funny thing is that although this game gets called "old school" all the time, in many respects it's taken a step back; rather than adhering to tried-and-tested conventions, the devs seemed to feel it necessary to fix what wasn't broken - the result being that they broke it, which is to the detriment of the game. D:OS is however a good solid game and with a little more polish and care could even rub shoulders with some of the classics.

There is far to much loot in game, so don't clean out the rooms and be a packmule, money is no issue.
You can craft and blacksmith a lot (if you discover the workings and recipies) but really, you don't have to. Do yourself a favor, and skip most of it.
Game needed quite a few patches to get in this state, but you can have a good time now, if you are up to a rather lengthy adventure, if you can restrain yourself from dragging everything along and if you can handle hours of inventory sorting and overlong battle animations.

This game can get tedious but if you play with a friend, it has endless possibilities.

My favorite aspect was the lack of 'classes'. You literally play whatever you want. If you want to be a mage that wears heavy armor and carries a sword and shield, you can do it. If you want to go 100% melee, enjoy smashing things. etc..

Can't say I was a great fan of the combat system initially but it grew on me quite a bit. Spells and abilities are good and some of the fights quite challenging (although enemy AI could be improved - I felt a bit too lucky in a few fights). Crafting and blacksmithing systems are great, there are wide variety of enemies and, of course, loads of magical items floating about with which to outfit your party. All contained in a very impressive game world. Inventories are a bit fiddly and annoying (err make them bigger onscreen?) and we could do with some more joinable NPCs in the game world who have a bit more voiced dialogue. I suppose there is a case for not making every PC be able to learn every skill too. There are a few more minor annoyances but I'm sure these will be ironed out in time. If you are an RPG fan you should play this game.

Baldur's Gate still holds the crown, but I get the impression that if anyone could make something that could be hailed as a BG3 (at least in spirit) then Larian would be the people to do so. Well done guys - a great accomplishment.

Absolutely fantastic game, it brings back to me vivid memories of my Black Isle/Interplay experiences (Baldur's Gate, Fallout...). I have been playing for 50 hours so far. Here's a short summary of my opinion:

    Pros:

    - The combat mechanics are well thought and it's always exciting to get into a fight. The amount of skills allows you to setup a lot of interesting strategies. I have been going with a combo of 2 mages, rogue and dual hand weapon warrior. So how interesting is it? A good example is that aside the traditional fireball spell, you have teleport spells where you can potentially send your heavy warrior in the middle the monster pack, or send an enemy in a pit of fire.
    - The music is perfect and I keep humming it even when not playing
    - Graphics are really nice, maybe slightly too cartoony for me, but that comes down to personal preference
    - So much reading materials, lore and random objects everywhere. This is one of the thing that gives you that distinct BG or Fallout feeling. Opening a crate, finding an armor and a random book about random lore stories.

    Cons:

    - The dialogue system between your 2 main characters is pretty rubbish. I find myself reloading just to got the best traits (which improves some aspect of your character sheet like skills or combat boost). Also the way conflicts are resolved (when your characters disagree) is too random. It is basically a game of rock-paper-scissors. But this doesn't feel very random as the computer player never chooses the same object than you.
    - One thing that I think could have been improved very easily is the map/teleport system. The issue is that there is no world map. Instead you have a local map that helps you navigate the place you are currently present and a teleportation device that allows you to select in a list the portal you want to go to. That gives a feeling of a disconnected maps rather than a coherent world.

Overall this is a great game and I totally recommend it if you like old school RPGs.

Are you looking for a storyline-heavy, hardcore RPG experience in the vein of the old Infinity Engine games? Then I have just the thing for you! Go and replay Baldurs Gate, because Divinity: Original Sin will offer you nothing of the sort, though it sure as hell likes to pretend that it does.

Instead, you'll be running back and forth through the same locations looking for that ONE THING you missed, that doesn't let you progress further. The game offers almost no clues about what you're supposed to do. You might think that this lack of handholding is a good thing, fit for such a "hardcore" game. You couldn't be more wrong. This is not about providing a challenge, this is about the developer saving money on creating content, by wasting player's time. In case you've already bought this game, I recommend you play with a guide, unless you enjoy spending hours entering every basement and breaking into every house, looking for something you missed the previous five times you were visiting that portion of the map.

There is no storyline per se. You come to town to solve a murder, but the story very quickly devolves into the usual Saving the World snoozefest. After the initial exposition, the main storyline takes a backseat, making place for an assortment of random quests, that mostly involve... you guessed it... running back and forth, trying to figure out what the hell you're supposed to do.

The pacing is horrible. There are groups of monsters standing all over the map. Some of these monsters can be defeated right away, others require you to level your party by killing other monsters first, effectively preventing you from completing some quests until your level is high enough. This makes the game linear, because it forces you to do things in a strict order, while the game pretends that you're playing a largely open ended cRPG. The game has very little optional content. You're literally forced to do almost everything, because otherwise you won't get enough XP to push the game forward.

The combat system is pretty good and the fights are reasonably challenging without being frustrating. Unfortunately, everything else in the game is an unholy mess of bad design, bad writing and bad humor. The dialogues are particularly bad, it looks like the writer used the thesaurus a little too often for his own good, making them sound weird and unnatural.

So if you really want to play this game, do yourself a favor and wait a year or two so you can get it for 10 bucks. Maybe they'll finish patching it by then. Or maybe some better cRPG will come along, so you don't have to play this one.

    It's a win-win situation!

After drudging through DOS's heavily padded campaign, unlocking the "real" final, final boss, and beating it after a crash on Turn 30, this was all I could think. Divinity: Original Sin starts out beautifully by dropping you off in a large seaport town called Cyseal, the start of your murder mystery. The first dozen or so hours are gripping; not because the plot is particularly good, but because Cyseal feels like a handcrafted cRPG town of old, a gigantic playground for your heroes to explore. However, even within this first area, the game's problems start to rear their ugly heads.

The Journal system is almost useless. Quests are just dumped into your book with no filtering or sorting options besides being able to toggle visibility of completed quests. Two very important quests (one was required to continue the story and and another to unlock the "real" final boss fight) were lost in the list of tedious & ambiguous side quests that I picked up along the way. The Journal is also wildly inconsistent with how quests are followed and marked: some quests will drop markers for each part on your map, while others are so vague they will have one line of text saying "congrats! you did it!" with no indication of how to continue the quest. Too many times I had to go to Google just to figure out where I was supposed to go for a quest because the journal, local NPCs, and pocket portal friends were clueless or just too vague.

The plot, its pacing, and the gameplay's pacing are all terrible. Many parts of the game involve listening to long-winded NPCs tell you their life story so you can pick up a side quest from them that will simply unlock their store front (or something similarly unimportant). D:OS is overly compartmentalized; you can feel the devs saying "Okay, combat NOW! Okay, 5 hours of NPC chat NOW!" I don't have a problem with reading text in a RPG but D:OS often feels like NPCs are chatting just for the sake of chatting. The story is heavily padded with long, boring sequences that stray from any semblance of plot that the game tries to carry. Too many times I loaded up my saved game and thought "What am I even doing here? Where am I supposed to go? What does this have to do with the story?" The main story itself is godawful too, shoveling in every trope the devs can think of (ancient evils awakening, chosen heroes with amnesia, pandora's box, an evil church, an evil twin sister, etc.) that attempts to twist and turn through a series of often predictable events that your characters have little effect on. Despite having little voice acting, there are few real dialogue options; most of the time during important NPC conversations, you're sitting there reading page after page of text, pressing 1 repeatedly until you get the chance to press 2 because you have a key item in your inventory from a side quest.

Even though the combat system is enjoyable and has plenty of room for character customization, I often found it an exercise in frustration. D:OS's combat isn't hard or even particularaly challenging, the game just plays itself better than you do. Enemies often "cheat" by teleporting in more foes after you engage them, a la Dragon Age 2, along with summoning pets of their own. While the Magicka-style elemental combos are a unique touch to a cRPG, enemies often utilize them in unexpected ways, like shooting lightning at a pool of blood (that came out of an enemy you killed) to stun your hero for at least 2-3 rounds (not counting additional stun checks while the field is active). Combat often comes down to who can CC who harder, turning fights into a knockdown/blind/stun-fest while you beat the punching bag enemies before they can summon pets or kill your mages in one enemy's turn. At least a third of the spells in the game have direct upgrades making many early spells obsolete in 20 or so hours (why use a single target version of a spell when the AoE has the same AP cost?). This would be reasonable in a MMO but in a single player cRPG where the highest spell req is level 20, it just looks like lazy design. Like the plot, combat is too compartmentalized; many areas have large swaths of nothing, while the last map in the game has a party of 4-8 mobs every screen width.

Tons of smaller issues plague this game. A clunky inventory system where important quest items gets easily lost in a sea of crafting materials. A frustrating crafting system that rewards guesswork and wiki-reading more than ingame exploration. A tedious Rock-Paper-Scissors minigame system for winning dialogue checks. A painfully long mandatory stealth sequence against invincible enemies that will kill your heroes in 2-3 hits. Although I think Divinity: Original Sin is a decent cRPG and I recommend it to fans of the genre, I feel no desire to ever play it again. Too much of D:OS is just tedious busywork in a predictable story that is stretched too thin to be consistently enjoyable.

It does feel truly like a game made by gamers, for gamers.

Larian deserve full praise for a wonderful (and mostly bug-free!) release and I will keep a close eye on their future titles.

    Pro's:

    - Thoroughly enjoyable tactical combat that always makes you think and use your skills, spells and the environment to your advantage.
    - Varied enemies with cool boss fights
    - A diverse range of skills, spells and character builds available
    - Detailed and interesting locations to explore
    - Lush graphics / art style
    - Lots of quests often with varied and alternate means to solve
    - A solid story coupled with interesting dialog (often humorous)

    Con's:

    - I felt the game was a bit long - I sank 90 hours into this game (completed every single side quest)
    - While the maps (corresponding to each act) were very large and detailed I didn't get the sense of a 'world' to explore - more so simply 4 different main areas.
    - Some minor bugs, nothing to bad
    - Combat went from being very challenging at the start to quite easy at the end (I upped the difficulty to 'hard' mid-game)

There aren't many bugs left, so that is nice.
One of the only problems I have it is that the quests have no guidance at all.
That is usually a good thing, but it can result in running around for hours.

    Multiplayer is also pretty bad.
You join someone's game and use their characters.
For a host, its fine, but the co-op partner makes 0 progress on their own.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is absolutely awesome, I've been waiting so long for a good old school RPG.
The combat system: The turn based combat is just marvelous, you really must do a good strategy for taking down strong enemies.
The lore: As the game says, original story, it isn't anything complex, but I thought it was good enough.
Coop mode: Playing with a friend is fun, but a really good RPG should be played by 3-4 players.
Camera: It is a weak point, could be a 360 degrees camera.
NPCs: You have many NPCs to play with, but most of them by contract , they have no back history or anything like this, until now.
Final consideration: The game is very good, and I don't feel sorry for spending money in it. I only wished there was a respawn system for some places.
Going against some reviews, some complained that the journal does not help anything or point the way to go, the RPG games were becoming easier day by day to attend new generation of players, now it is back to the root. But I agree it should at least say where to go in some quests, if it is not about seek for something, because marking is not seeking anymore.

Graphic performance disappointing on my system that runs D3 just fine.
I found the game tedious after a while (18th). Quests failed to clear when goals became obsolete or impossible. Dealing with inventory is a drag. Crafting is a little random and not logged - making it a pain to do it again. Combat feels poorly balanced.

So, it's a huge testament to D:OS that I played every chance I get and sacrifice sleep to progress the game. I'm also surprise to see that I have the patience for a turn base game. This is definitely GoTY to me!!

It is a HUGE, wonderfully modernized but still refreshingly old-school rpg, with an incredible attention to detail, great humor, a decent story and an amazingly deep, turn-based tactical combat system that allows for countless approaches and combinations.
It looks georgeous, is surprisingly bug-free for a project this size (and it's patched regularly and fast as well), and it runs well even on older systems. The crafting system is fun and intuitive, and some of the puzzles are very well done.

For all the praise, however, I also have to mention the downsides. And there are definitely those:
The balance, in general, could use an overhaul. The game has a pretty steep learning curve in the beginning, but once you know the system, the fights are actually very, very simple. Note that I say simple, not easy.

The fights, especially boss fights, tend to be long, repetitive, tedious, and, yes, even boring. The enemies usually have a TON of hitpoints, unlimited special abilities and everyone and their mothers, - of the same level or a bit higher than the party - is pretty much immune to special abilities - and thus, most tactical choices. They do, however, do pretty pathetic amounts of damage while keeping your party stunned, crippled, knocked down, frozen and generally annoyed but alive.
I would highly prefer shorter, more challenging battles against enemies that are actually affected by all the special arrows I can craft and all those abilities - foes that are much faster to kill or disable but a lot more likely to kill ME.

The numbers/RPG mechanics are yet another problem. Larian follows the old JRPG-style of insane number exaggeration. You start with a weapon that does 10 damage and you'll end with some monstrous obscentiy that can easily exceed 1000 damage on a critical hit or with a special maneuver. Enemies hitpoints and resistances grow accordingly, and the interesting enemies are thus always within about 2 levels of yours. Higher enemies are pretty much untouchable, lower ones pathetically helpless.

And, finally, many quests and puzzles are just too damn obscure. I commend Larian to go against the mainstream, and skip all the quest markers, map markers, signs above a quest giver's head etc. But sometimes they fall to the other extreme and there is simply no way to continue with a quest but to randomly walk evereywhere, try everything and finally check the internet, only to learn that you missed some random item 4 hours ago... ;-P
More logic and sensible hints, please!

But this is all just criticizing on a VERY high level, and it doesn't diminish the fun at all. And, hands down, you won't get a better deal for your money anywhere atm.

Also, when the options are rarely what I want to say and rarely give you the option would choose, it really ruins the immersion.

NPCs will repeat the same lines which are randomly selected are the same for every similar NPC around it. NPCs with routines will keep doing routines, which is annoying when they keep shouting the same lines every time, it's very peculiar. I noticed one or two NPCs said Cyseal had fallen, so I thought Cyseal was basically burned to the ground, but it wasn't (it seems like the orcs just assumed it was?).

I'd actually of preferred the game without the voice acting in its state. I think more voices were necessary. It was quite apparent that the male rogue voice and male warrior voice were done by the same person, so playing with two male characters didn't leave me with much options.

I'm not really going to get into stereotypes. I noticed at one point, an NPC in Cyseal expects one of your characters to be male. Also, a female character is called Lord by another NPC.

I have a big list of issues but those were my main qualms. I could nitpick all day since the game isn't that polished, but at least you can alter the storyline and use UGC with it. I felt the game was rather demanding considering the graphics, I hope next time everything improves TBH.

I make my reviews as an independent thinker, that being said I don't see why this game is rated so high.
To me as in the old tale the Emperor is truly naked here.
Furthermore I've been playing RPGs and more since 1981 starting on an Apple2+ with Ultima, etc., and I've even worked (as a programmer) on an RPG of what people consider one of the top ten of all time..which might mean nothing

To me as in the old tale the Emperor is truly naked here.

and I've even worked (as a programmer) on an RPG of what people consider one of the top ten of all time..which might mean nothing other then to say I've played a lot of RPGs and have considered design in some detail.

I had to read some guides and other views to see why people really like this game.
My problems with it should be obvious.
Apparently you have to really work at this game to understand it enough to even start.
The whole experience seems very unpolished, unbalanced, and very unintuitive in a lot of places.
Mind you I didn't play the original one, maybe it's a prerequisite.

    My first experience:
I create a character, then I see okay I start with actually two characters. There is very little explanation or little telling you the significance of each.
Now in game it's kind of fun. I do my first battle, etc., then I wander into a place where monsters are level 3 and they quickly wipe out my party. I reason, humm, okay I guess I need to get level 3 or higher to be on even ground. Then I reach level 3 go back and maybe I can beat them this time, and then hit another level 3 group but this time the boss dude has some kind of AOE that wipes out my whole party in one shot? WTF is going on here?
And then there are quests with little indication where to go next to solve them.

Yea all those classics (like the one I worked on) were fun, but the reason they just didn't have any of the advancements we have today are:
    A) They weren't invented/thought/tried yet.
    B) Were just not technically feasible yet.
    C) The costs/dev time was prohibiting.

    "Tough-S" is not the solution.
There is a reason why more modern games have those helpful features, because they can.
Proper gradient (in skills, advancement, etc.), arrows that show the way, etc., IMHO make things more fun.
No one says you have to do everything for the player, but then doing little to nothing for them either?
And sure they are a lot more work and resources for a developer to do.

This game only made more sense to me as I read guides and or walk-throughs for it, okay I get that now. To me having to do all that sort of cases to make it a "game", it becomes more of a "job".. even from the get-go.

Furthermore the skills and their interactions with MOBs are out of balance; the game lacks polish.
Beta is not an excuse to release something before it's ready, and this game feels more like a barely playable alpha to me.

In the end the game was fun for the several hours I played, don't mean to sound entitled at all, but because the game's imbalances, bugs, and incompleteness made me move on to other games..

With more than one hours logged into this game and I haven't gotten out of the first act, not because its that packed with sweet baked cookies but because its that time consuming.
The game has only recently came out and it was summer, the end of student vacation all around the world, but there is a big problem with this game. Unless you are a RPG, story based game fan like myself it wouldn't hold your interest and you would grow tired of it quick.

The reason lay within the game itself, as a single player its a complete failure - You are in charge of two main characters and possibly two flat henchmen, without another player to assume the role of one of the character you are left there alone to weed through hundreds of pointless arguments with yourself...

The game becomes very easy when you play it on single player with a very strong resemblance to heroes of might and magic 4 - you don't need to communicate and thus lose the fun of communication.

    - The story telling in this game is quite average like the rest of Larian games, it starts of nice at the intro but it loses pace quick and soon your investigation of the murderer will sum up with breaking into everyone houses, stealing all their belonging so you can afford the highly priced books from the local 'friendly wizard' or from the very people you are trying to save. but don't worry no one will seem to notice you are a major kleptomaniac as there are no real choices and consequences in this 'rpg'

    - After you are done breaking into everyone houses - you will go on a kill spree, no choice in there either. The enemies are nicely leveled in order to guide your approach which would remind you of a silly arcade game. level 2, level 3, level4.
But divinity isn't doesn't present itself as a silly arcade game. It wanted to be the spiritual predecessor to planescape torment and the baldur's gate.

Let me tell you something about those old games - They didn't have boring items immersion breaking system which glorified the replacement of your sword or armor every time you played. In baldurs gate your attributes didn't change every two levels(In planescape they did but it was part of the plot) Your Great sword would improve 800% from level 1 to level 20
it would improve only by a mere 35% from 1-10 to 1-10 +2 your full plate armor didn't improve by 2000% from level 1 to 20
    It would improve by 10%.

What happens here is, that Larian has a developed a diablo like item system devoid of any logic, fun or immersion in order to promote time consuming tasks. rather than spending their time developing a real time they spent it on creating lots of identical loot painted in different colors or ridiculous names. but in reality these are the same items and the all point of them being there is to turn you into a kleptomaniac and inflate the game time.

The noncombat skills are worthless and un interesting and only serve in breaking immersion.
Trade - non interesting and only serve in consuming time
Your two top source hunters are under supplied and can be beaten by lowly guards at the beginning.

Some of these problems are common among many rpg games, but they are still problems which can easily distract from the fun you will have playing this game, too many developers like to glorify their leveled games based on the old D&D well in reality the D&D gave great respect to levels and used them to create a better sense of immersion. while in today games level are there in order to grant you a false sense of achievement and consume your time with menial tasks.

Instead of focusing their time on great a great and wonderful interactive story and fun combat, Larian sucked in to the mmorpgs mentality of creating a highly frustrating and time consuming game which give you cookies every time your did a repetitive action.

This can still be fun if you have a reliable playing partner, do not buy this game if you don't you will only become frustrated and waste your valuable time.

Making gold was too easy (stealing paintings). I do understand the concerns of the negative reviews. Depending on what you are looking for in a RPG it is totally possible that a consumer may regret his/her purchase. I have at times been quite frustrated and swore out loud, but very few, if any, games are so polished that these things can be avoided.

The most frustration comes from the interface. The camera is VERY unwieldy and there have been several times I have "misclicked" in battle because the hotbar didnt register, or the thing I was clicking shifted position just as I was attacking.

The amount of junk loot is overwhelming, but you cannot ignore anything as you have no idea as to what might be needed in the future. Twice I have spend about a half hour organizing my inv to a manageable
    point so I could continue.

Character progression in the beginning is the slowest of any game I have ever played. This gives the game a very slow feeling out of the gate. Let me say though this changes once you hit level 5 and have the ability to start finishing some of the bigger quests. Progression after that is much better and more satisfying.

The game WILL NOT help you through the story line or quests. You WILL come to points where you have no idea what to do next. You WILL stare blankly at the screen. But pushing on will allow you to proceed deeper into the game. Often times you will kill an encounter that will drop the item for a completely different quest that you had given up on because you had absolutely no idea where to start looking. The times I have been well and truly stuck, a night sleep and new perspective has made all the difference. The answers are there, the clues are there. There just isnt a big green arrow pointing at them.

If you can look past the above issues, then get this game. You will LOVE it. If what I have written gives you pause, then you may not want to invest. I will say though that I have three friends who are also playing the game, and we all love it. The positives far outweigh the negatives in my book.

Overall: very happy with this game.
It was identified to me as a game similar to Baldur's Gate. The comparison was right. Using modern graphics, the gameplay is enjoyable. My experience was bug free. After a short install I end up playing the game for about 25 hours in one weekend (it's very addictive).

Game is very good. However, when it says that it's "old school," bear in mind this also means it adopts old school game/plot mechanics. This can lead to frustration at times as the combat is ridiculously difficult (except on "easy" where it's *too* easy), and quests can be extremely vague in what you're supposed to do next.

When it works, it is truly great. Vivid colors, some combat variety, lots of dialogue and humor.

But the combat variety is dulled by the huge cooldowns on most abilities so your fighters will rely on lots and lots of autoattack and your mages will use the same 1-2-3 spell set every turn, because everything else is on cooldown. The dialogue... Well, it's all voiced. But it's so

The dialogue... Well, it's all voiced. But it's so pompous it begins to hurt halfway through. Yes, yes, we're saving the world, blah-blah-blah, skip-skip-skip. Oh, you want to go with us? Sure. Oh, you've decided to not go with us? Ok. Why does this take five screens of text?

Also, crowd control is very unreliable so quite a few fights can only be beaten by either blatant quicksave scumming or by massive overleveling.

Environmental effects are decent and a breath of fresh air. Except after level 10 I could not care less if I was standing in a fire or in a poison pool. The best way to wage combat is to BLAST EVERYTHING!

Many puzzles can be cheated through with the use of certain items but then again, you can't teleport anything over a knee-high obstacle...

It all feels like Larian were really trying but had to cut a lot of corners to deliver the product. The game might improve over the next half a year with patches.

Let me make something clear: this is NOT "Baldur's Gate 3". It is nothing like Baldur's Gate. Pillars of Eternity is the game that is striving to be like the Infinity Engine classics.

Let me make something clear: this is NOT "Baldur's Gate 3". It is nothing like Baldur's Gate. Pillars of Eternity is the game that is striving to be like the Infinity Engine classics.

Divinity: Original Sin is more like Diablo with turn-based combat.

It's not a terrible game but I'm left feeling unimpressed. Music is okay. A few songs are gorgeous (e.g. character creation music) but many are forgettable and dull. The opening cinematic was cheesy. Environmental graphics are nice but the level design is a bit repetitive and I don't feel the urge to explore the world because it's not a very exciting one. Character models are hideous and the character creation is very basic. You'd think that in a game where you create two characters at the start, it wouldn't be this way. I had a lot of trouble attempting to get my male wizard to not look like an identical twin of my male warrior.

I'm not impressed by the class system. It doesn't have anywhere near the depth of D&D games like NWN, where you have ability points, feats, skill points, spells/abilities, and various unique classes that can be combined in any way. Instead, you just have class 'names' which attempt to make the game look as if there are classes, which there aren't, really. You just pick a few skills and build your own character from scratch. The limited skills are VERY much like D3/WoW and NOTHING like the Forgotten Realms games.

I don't feel myself enjoying the dialogue as much as PS:T, NWN or BG. It's not as well-written and a lot of it is filler/boring. Still, it's not -that- bad.

I'll say that the game is somewhat charming and the turned-based combat can be fun/creative, but overall it doesn't deserve the high ratings that it's getting.

+ One of the most beautiful and immersive worlds I've seen in a game to date. You can interact and barter with almost anyone (including animals if you have the talent). The graphics are grade A for a game like this and I often find myself just staring at the scenery.
+ Gripping story that has you guessing whats coming next, and most of the time you guess wrong. For me, at least, it seemed most of the story came straight out of left field. I loved it.
+ Combat feels engaging, challenging, and at times it can be very unforgiving. One wrong move could cost you a hero. Icy surfaces are definitely the bane of my existence, I think they get me more than anything else. But the combat itself really gives you a sense of accomplishment when you kill a group of enemies you just died 3 times on to your own stupid errors.
+ The music is incredible. I constantly find myself humming along to the music, even when I'm not playing. Every song is a perfect match for whats going on in game.
+ Character creation and class system is the most flexible of any RPG I've come across. You can be whatever you want to be from level one, so you don't end up with cookie cutter builds that everyone uses. This really allows you to adapt the game to your play style.
+ Replay-ability. I'm still on my first play through and already I find myself thinking about and deciding what I'm going to do next time around. Almost every quest can turn out differently depending on what you do and how you play. It seems no two play throughs will ever the same.

    Cons:
    - I'm not going to lie there were a couple bugs I've come across so far. None of which were game breaking and were fixed with a simple Save/Reload. The most common and most annoying for me if sometimes combat will start but the music wont. The only other big one I can remember was one of my companions wasn't able to be healed. But as stated saving/reloading did fix both of these bugs.
    - I wish it was longer. Not to say it's short because it's not by any means. I'm on my first play through level 16 and so far I've invested 76 hours of play. I really just don't want it to end.

I can honestly say this is the best 40 bucks I've ever invested in a game. I highly recommend it anyone who enjoyed games like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age: Origins, or Knights of the Old Republic. Anyway hope this was helpful and hope you enjoy the game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In the sea of reviews that usually give any game 0, 1, 9 or 10 it's always nice to read a review with the score of 4-8 in my opinion. I don't believe any game, book or a film can be called a 0 or a 10 without properly defining it's strong points and weaknesses. That being said, let's proceed to the review.

D:OS is a typical kickstarter project. By that I don't mean to insult it, but it seems a lot of kickstarter games are old school comebacks. While the game proudly states it's genre as full fledged RPG, I'd say it's a mix between adventure game and tactical rpg. When I think of an RPG, I think of a lot of important choices, character depth and complexity. Adding stats, some companion dialog and a billion of items doesn't make an RPG (hence i cringe when someone calls Diablo an RPG). Despite the size of the world and its seemingly vast amount of choices, in reality this game delivers a simple (albeit finely done) story about saving the world. The story itself seems to wink at the players with its references. Sometimes they are hidden in a line of dialog, other times they are ripping off (and I don't mean this negatively) old RPGS. The finest example of the latter is teleporting to The End of Time (for those, who don't know - google end of time chrono trigger).

So we got a basic, but coherent plot of saving the world. Now what about the world itself ? I'm pleased to say, that the graphics combine the old&new very well. A drop down perspective pleases the eye, the details are decent and while the design it self is rather generic, I think that technically-wise the game looks good.

When it comes to the game mechanics, it contains everything we've seen plus a little bit extra. Tactical games like this always present similar challenges and have their pros and cons. It's no different this time. While we have a lot of things to work with (spells, classes, elemental effects etc.) there are simply so many calculated ways, builds and ideas of how to play it some players will get lost, while some will abuse the system. As an example, after 15 hours of game play I noticed, that the battles that were difficult were those that played out on the first map. Then after about 3-4 hours I understood the system quite well, and for another 11 hours I'd pretty much use the same tactics all the time. There also seems to be a lot of interesting to use mechanics, that peter out towards end-game. One of the example is specialist arrows. While the effects are great at the beginning, toward the second part of the game my archer would always dich out more damage just using his skills and normal attacks. Not to mention piercing defenses of high level enemies is almost impossible. While it may seem like I nitpick, I certainly enjoyed the combat most of the time and it gives the player a lot of possibilities.

To sum things up, Divinity: OS is a solid title, that scores double points for the simple fact, that there just aren't too many amazingly good rpgs lately. If you're a fan of old school rpgs and tactical games be sure to check it out. However, if turn based combat, calculating your chances and a loooot of quick saving isn't your thing, I'd pass it.

Ps I didn't touch on the subject of "moral" choices, as despite being an interesting mechanic, it doesn't truly do much for the game imho.

the combat is fun and engaging without being unduly complicated. building and gearing your characters will define how successful your campaign will be. bad character building choices are punished and unlike the Paragon/Renegade concept in Mass Effect giving an illusion of choice (and cosmetic aesthetics only), choices in this game have practical consequences (giving different boosts and bonuses).

the crafting in this game is intuitive and surprisingly fun (with some really good community mods out there).

there are some bugs of course but nothing game breaking as yet (the mod community has also done a good job fixing some of those). the only real gripe i have about the game is that archer classes are pretty under-powered in the game (especially at lower levels) but that is something which hopefully will be addressed in subsequent patches.

    tl;dr - buy it.

If you go outside of the starting city too early, the enemies are not scaled down, and instead you get killed. The game can be PUNISHINGLY hard if you don't do a few side quests now and then. There's a lot of humor to the game. For example, when you go into "stealth mode" you diguise yourself as a part of the environment. Undergound you might disguise yourself as a stone. Inside, as a barrel, etc. There's a lot of fun to be had and a lot of content to explore. If you're expecting visual spectacles the likes of which you have never seen or spectacular voice acting, then this isn't the game for you. But if you want a good, old-fashioned RPG like Baldur's gate or Morrowind, then you've come to the right place. The game doesn't coddle you. It doesn't adjust the levels of enemies. The first time I played, I made some unfortunate mistakes leveling up, but I don't object to the fact that it cost me a little. Now I've learned and I'm trying it over again.

And the best thing about it is that I don't feel the ten hours I spent before I restarted were wasted at all. No, I learned in the school of hard knocks. I'd elaborate more, but I'm going to go play a little bit more.

This game doesn't come even close to having the fidelity of the D&D games of the late 90s/early 2000s. Character creation consists of choosing between many different class names - all of which are irrelevant, since everything is about skills. There is no differentiating between skills and spells either - the fighter is essentially a spellcaster like everyone else. In short, character creation is boring and your characters all look the same. Only two characters can be recruited, which means absolute linearity with a 4 member party system.

The worst part of it however, is all the bugs and things that simply do not work, or work in a way that is very difficult to grasp from the information you are given. An example of combat: I want my wizard to teleport an oil barrel to set a group of enemies on fire and sneak my rogue in and kill the enemy boss. First try: I use my walk in shadows skill on the rogue, and walk him in while the rest of the group stands behind. Nope, doesn't work - walk in shadows gets cancelled and the main group refuses to join the battle. Second try: I teleport the barrel and boom, big explosion, lots of fire, but the enemy does not take any fire damage? Why? Because they are wet? Because they are skeletons? Because the developer wanted to give them a fire protection for some reason? God knows. Oh well, I activate my 'walk in shadows' on the rogue, this time with success, and prepare to sneak him in. But, hmm, there is fire there, so I should use my "immunity to burning" scroll with a 100% chance of setting the 'immunity to burning' buff! Good idea! 4 action points spent, and in we go! But...no, first thing that happens is that my rogue loses half his hitpoints to, guess what, fire damage. What gives? Maybe I need immunity to _fire_, not _burning_? Okay, very well, third try: This time I choose to spend some extra action points and sneak my rogue _around_ the burning oil. However, still he ends up in a tight situation with one enemy left to fight. What to do? Use the healing potion? Hm, no I have a stun skill with a 105% (!) chance to work, no need to waste potions. So, whizz-bang, large effect, but is the target stunned? Nope, "The keeper of bla bla saved against stun". So what the hell does 105% chance of success actually mean?

Suffice to say that after 5 tries on the same battle, you get very tired of the nonsensical game mechanics of 'Divinity' and just turn it off.

Now you're having a nice time in the game and thinking you're glad to be playing it. The pace stops the fun stops and the frustration begins. The cycle continues throughout the whole experience. Expand

I'll give it a 9 due to some cumbersome inventory management, and occasional bugs remaining up to this point.

This is an incredibly unique game in a genre that I have a love/hate relationship with. Many games of this type just never clicked with me, but some (fallout 1 & 2 for example) have. I can honestly say I haven't had this much fun with an RPG since Fallout 2... and that was a loooong time ago.

Story/Dialogue: The way you interact with the world just feels very natural and keeps you entertained. These days I feel myself getting bored or never even really getting interested at all when it comes to game storyline. Even games that have generally good reviews feel cheesy to me pretty often. This one, for whatever reason, is keeping me genuinely interested.

Art/Style: It's pretty good. It's nothing special. Honestly that's probably the only thing that isn't super great about this game.

Combat: Extremely gratifying and complex, but not so much that it pushes you away. It takes time to figure out, but that's part of the reason this game holds my interest... it doesn't hold your hand. Figuring out ways to beat a fight that you probably shouldn't be in feels amazing. I'd honestly put the combat complexity and depth somewhere near Final Fantasy Tactics.

Overall: An amazing single-player experience. I can't vouch for multiplayer since I haven't tried and don't plan to. If you enjoy RPGs at all, this is a must. Worth the full price, which I rarely say.

At this time this is the RPG with all capitals. I mean it would be all capitals if RPG wasn't spelled so anyway. It has bugs, game breaking sometimes, but still. This is what you remember Baldur's Gate was back then. (Well it wasn't, this is. :) )
It is deep, it is challenging, it is fun. (And sometimes frustrating until you find how to conquer the challenge at hand.)

    Combat:
The combat is some of the best rpg combat I have played in a very long time if not ever. Element interaction for combat makes every fight interesting.

Music: The music is very well done. Unfortunately some of the music does not create immersion/ repetitive.

Story: The story is not the most original story ever created but it still intriguing enough to keep you playing through the game.

    The Bad:

    Lack of Characters:
There are only two characters that you are able to get for your party are bland, and the mercenaries you are able to get from your homestead are just the same except no boring/ uncreative back stories.

The game is easily the best RPG I have seen for years, since the age of Baldur's Gate. I have been incredibly satisfied with the game overall. With future fixes and Mods this game could be one of the best RPGs ever.

How does the game feel? Pretty good, it has excellent combat and spell combinations. You can use the environment to control your enemies movements. You can pick them off by funneling them down a tunnel with the environment. Bait them into traps of your own making as well. It has plenty of dialog, not as much as say Planescape Torment, but still enough for a good novel. The overall story is excellent, though at times jarring. You can easily get lost if you decide to go off and do side quests, and then come back to the main story. There's plenty of places to explore, and the game lacks some of the more annoying aspect of modern gaming. "Social justice," "conveying a message of intent," "pressing the moral ideas of someone else." It lacks all of that, and gives you a simple, and good story.

You have mod support. Probably the greatest thing with modern gaming allowing you to expand the original game, beyond the scope of the original. Make it more difficult, make it easier it's all there for you.

So what's wrong? Well, I found load times even off a SSD to be sluggish at times. Patches have fixed this. "Friendly fire" against companions, and then them breaking dialog in very rare cases, though this has 99% of the time been fixed since patch 1.08. Issues with the main character in slot 1, defaulting to slot 2, was an issue for a bit, but seems to have been fixed as well.

Overall, it's worth the money, I just wished I'd backed it like Pillars of Eternity, and Planescape: Tides of Numenera.

An outstanding part of this game is the interaction with the environment. You can make it rain and electrocute enemies who are standing in a puddle. Or teleport an enemy into lava.

The most important part about this game is that it rewards exploration. To all those game developers who think it's fun to run from quest marker to quest marker, take a good look at this game. This is how it should be. You only have an idea where you need to go. The rest you have to discover yourself. And when you do, it's freaking awesome. That's what exploration is about, set out into the unknown and be in awe of what you find along the way. Good or bad.

This game has such positive reviews and I bought it. After playing thirty minutes, I wasn't impressed at all. Without voice acting, the game moves at a snail's pace. The story is confusing and the initial trailer wasn't impressive at all. I play some silly games like Nancy Drew for PC and those $6.99 games have better character development than Divinity: Original Sin.

Divinity: Original Sin is a fantastic back to roots RPG with the same amount of lack of hand holding as other RPGs suck as dark souls. This lets you discover things for yourself and requires you to think way more than some modern turn-based RPGs. The graphics are good the music is spot on. Simply, buy this game.

This is the most striking thing for me, the dialogue is not voiced, the Bio would be the same, so I see no reason why the developers could not add a couple more player models. More bad: The Rogue class in this game is utterly useless piece of effing dead weight. In calssics like BG II: SoA for example such a character was a valuable addition. But here his dmg is way, way (I cant stress this enough) subpar to the Ranger, Rogues cant dual-wield (huh?!), Rangers with high Awareness (which is a decent stat for them) can just see traps and ground shoot them. Rogues are my second favorite RPG class after Wizards, so this is a big downside for me. Speaking of magic users, Wizards are completely imbalanced. Air magic dominates all school trees, the first support character will cover most other magic needs with Rain, Heal, Teleport (playing with 2 Teleports is too OP) and any other points put in a different magic tree of your main Wizard other than Air magic significantly decrease dmg output. Next: money. Gold is really scarce in the start, so the player cant afford anything other than a few healing pots. Spellbooks look like something from the Vatican Archives, items look like the new limited edition Channel collection. The way around that is to steal from houses which is so easy in this game, its stupid. Another stupid thing is that Secret Agents working for the government are forced to petty theft for chump change. The devs should have thought of some way to get gold in the start, after that gold is not an issue any more, and if the second main character has Barter high enough, the player can hoard on pretty much anything. Which is another imbalance - no gold in the start, gold is irrelevant afterwards. And lastly its not open-world, the game is almost entirely linear and its not very long, its rather short compared to classics and TES games. If you see bad scores, know they are given by children who are lied that they have played real RPGs and are usually fans of ME, WoW and consider Dragon Age to be hardcore (it was the only good one after KotoR but still a far cry). On the other hand the perfect scores are given by Kikcstarters to self justify and suppress buyers remorse. So take everything with a grain of salt. My best tip: skip this one and wait for Pillars of Eternity.

It's a conscious decision on Larian's part to resurrect tried-and-true threads that run deep into the bones of the CRPG genre. It's a culmination of those efforts and an unapologetic celebration of battle-tested concepts backed by solid co-op. Most of all, it comes together as a grand adventure that hearkens back to sleepless nights buoyed by the roll of a die and a pad of grid paper shared between fellow dungeon crawlers.

As much as I loved the bulk of the game, by the end I was burning out, and burning out fast. Despite that, I'm glad that some studios are still willing to show an almost insane level of ambition in realizing the games they want to make without compromise, even if it does lead to a few dire moments here and there.
