Total unbalanced turd of a game. Either impossible AF or easy AF. Disgusting. Only conversations are fun, balance is in the toilet. Don't buy this game unless you want to loose endless hours reloading old savegames and watch your team getting steamrolled by everything, everywhere.

Game is slow and boring. Level design is bad, story not much good either, new battle system is horrible, dialogs whole new level worse without your party member being able to influence the outcome.

The 'narrator' concept is brilliantly implemented, I really didn't feel the need for animations while interacting with the world's characters. It was the hook that kept me going while I started playing. It just 'works', I don't remember any other rpg game that implemented it like this... The story is complex and interesting. Maybe it gets a little too twisted at times, but the 'script' is very well written so it's a pleasure.
The combat system gives such an immense freedom that you can only applaud it's creators. The drawback, at least for me, was the difficulty and the time invested in each battle. I don't have a lot of free time...and if you make mistakes (which you will) and you have to re-battle, well, it can take up to 1h+ , in some cases, for one battle. This was the conflictual part, loved and hated it, - oh, and the fact that sometimes I just don't see some darn levers, that are too blended in the environment ..really frustrating-

As a side note, I found it to be more balanced if I play in 'explorer' mode and fight with levels greater than mine (up to 2 points), otherwise it's too easy. It's just tad easier than 'classic' mode while fighting with the same level. (throughout the game I constantly changed difficulty in order to find a balanced combat enjoyable for me) So get it, try it, enjoy it!

The combat in this game is extremely badly designed. Enemies come in two categories: 1. They have far too many action points and abilities, or 2. They are laughably easy to destroy. Also, the "sex scenes..." shudder. Voyeur narrator narrating your decision tree sex life. Weird.

The crazy amount of skills available for your (and your enemies) use is somewhat overwhelming. The variety in builds that are completely viable in this game is astounding. I've found myself replaying the game time and time again (solo) just to try different builds. This game is a solid 8.5/10 for solo play if you enjoy a challenge and want more tactical combat but throw in a buddy or two or three and it becomes a near perfect game. Competitive questing is a very unique experience that I have otherwise never had outside of this game. You can do one quest together and then the next against one another with competing goals. Your completion means they fail. However, it doesn't make you enemies forever. You, as players, can decide when to work together or not. Personally, this is my favorite game of probably the last 8 or so years. It isn't perfect with their controller menu's not being the best and the inventory can be off putting to some but mods not only add soooooo much content (Seriously, there are like 15 really solid "class" mods that add skills out the wazoo!) so I thought about giving it a 9/10 but honestly, the parts of the game that make it soooo good are simply breath takingly amazing so I had to give it a 10/10. First 10/10 I've ever given on a review. Expand

Near perfection. A great slow paced RPG experience - for me this is one of the only video games that comes close to feeling like a long D&D campaign. Loaded with delicious RPG character building decisions. It's been a long time that I've sat and stared at which stats to select for 30 minutes every time I level up - so hard to decide... and I love it!

Great oldschool RPG. Really love to play it. Not so strong, but nice storyline. But very interesting characters and really nice gameplay, which gives you lot of freedom. You can do quests by many ways. Also, you can use non standart ways, to cut some things, and finish quest faster. Really nice game with very strong RPG moment and open world full of freedom.

D:OS II is very good game. It has beautiful look, interesting story, good characters.

However it have also some cons: slow leveling which force you to grind, or you will be at terrible disadvantage, enemies who nearly always have better gear, but the biggest problem for me is the fact, that has booooring world.

The combat mechanics are centered around the interaction between elemental magics and environmental opportunities; Cast a thundering bolt on a puddle of water and all the enemies that happen to be standing there will get electrocuted and eventually end-up losing their turn because of that specific status effect.

The turn-based system gives you the time to reflect upon your next move and plot tactics. Each characters possess two types of armor; One armor protects from 'magic and elemental' damage and the other protects from 'physical' damage; This system is interesting in the sense that it forces the player to balance its party between characters that deal elemental damage and the ones that specialize in dealing damage to the physical armor.

Unfortunately, none of that ever amounts to a truly satisfying combat experience, since the sheer chaos and unpredictability of the various situations means that nothing really ever goes according to plan. There is also a lot of redundancy across the various abilities, and a general sense that there is just too much on offer for the player to develop a proper level of confidence within a single play-through.

It doesn't help, that across my play-through, every enemy I have encountered happened to be systematically 3-4 levels above mine and could eliminate my party members in a single shot. This has been a real source of frustration.

The fact of the matter is that it just never really felt about smart tactical decisions, but more about mastering the art of save scumming, circumventing, and grinding. The game has fairly unoriginal story, and uninteresting characters. The audio-visuals are repetitive and ultimately uninspiring. For all its many merits, this is a definite let down.

    Play Darkest Dungeon instead.

In a world where the video-game industry continuinally churns out tiresome, uninteresting manure like an overfed cow, Larian Studios finally delivers an extensive (and I mean, very extensive!) co-op campaign filled with ridiculous strategic depth, head-tilting puzzles and riddles, and a whole host of moral dilemmas to test your very customized characters.

Of course, no game can ever truly be perfect, but as far as I'm concerned, Divinity: Original Sin II is about as close as a developer can hope to get. There are some balancing issues, the occasional bug, and some strange tactical decisions by the AI, but overall the game is a must-have for any man, woman or dwarf that enjoys a strong, well-established fantasy setting and turn-based combat that requires critical thinking, finesse, and a just a pinch of explosive creativity.

As a small note, a very small minority of buyers beware: the story is a bit wacky and may not be the most serious at times. If you're looking for 12 hours of grueling, dark, humorless plot, you may be disappointed. For most prospective purchasers, this shouldn't be an issue.

Leading to constant gear millthread, and forcing you to pick encounters and grab xp, to beat others. And that is leading to being overleveled in the end. Which makes everything super easy. One level means average about being 30perc stronger in damage and health defense as well.

BTW... this is proven by people around writing, that combat is challenging, only if you dont do completionist playthrough. I do (somewhat trying to rp, but SADLY its quite limited in D:OS games, just pushing you on railroad).

Enemies now have separate ratings for their physical and magical armour, and you have to reduce either to zero before you can start damaging their health or affecting them with your special attacks. Remember the joy of having your knight charge through a horde of enemies in the first DOS game and knocking them all over? You can't do that any more if your damage doesn't exceed their physical armour score. Combat now ends up becoming more of a war of attrition where you grind down enemy armour while trying to conserve your special attacks for use when their armour is finally gone. Tactics no longer seem to matter as much as it often comes down to whoever can inflict the most damage in a shorter period of time. The Disneyland amusement park type battlegrounds are still there as well, with barrels, ladders, and platforms all over the place in areas where combat is likely to occur. A nice touch is the introduction of elevation, where you can climb up to a higher vantage point in a combat to gain a substantial damage bonus against enemies below you, but it puts slower characters without any kind of teleportation ability at a bit of a disadvantage. The difficulty also seems to have been ramped up from the first game. Enemies often outnumber you significantly and have an irritating habit of focusing their attacks on the squishy characters, moving just out of range of your special attack that you find yourself 1 action point short of using that round, or else moving further than you expected and somehow being able to target you with an attack or two even though you were sure a wall would give you cover. Just when you think you're doing well, the game throws you into a boss battle which has you pushing up daisies and having to reload or restart (looking at you, ship battle at end of act 1).

Some of the niggling problems from the first game have still not been sorted out though; townsfolk will still constantly repeat the same lines over and over in the background while you are trying to concentrate on dealing with a merchant for example. There are still way too many items to pick up and having to manage your inventory constantly becomes a chore. I don't want to constantly end up picking up nails, branches, skulls and other junk all in the name of crafting. Can we not have a decent RPG without crafting in it - please??? Character models still lack any kind of facial animation which looks a bit strange when you hear them talking but you zoom in to see their lips aren't moving at all. Probably understandable though, considering this game was funded on Kickstarter.

It's still a good game though, but you can clearly see where this is not an AAA-type title. I would really love for Larian to be able to put together a big budget title in the near future!

    Pros:
    - Good writing
    - Fully voice acted
    - Fun turn based combat
    - Lots to do
    - 4 player multiplayer support (if you like that sort of thing)

    Cons:

First half is 9, but the rest only 5, if you do too many side quests, then beginning from about half of act 2, the battle will be meaningless. The numeric aspect should be polished better.

What is even more insane is that despite those other games being incredible, Divinity: Original Sin II is clearly the best game of them all. It is THAT good. The environments are lush and detailed. The story is gripping from the very start of the game. The character development isn't a slog, so you actually feel a connection to each of them from the moment you hear their stories. Then as the game continues, you develop even deeper emotional connections. That makes the choices you make and their outcomes so impactful.

Everything to be said about this game has been said a million times, and with good reason. It deserves all the praise. I just want to give it my 10.

If you enjoy tactics games, turn based strategy games, fantasy RPGs, or games rich with lore and content, you should almost certainly enjoy Divinity: Original Sin 2. This is my favorite game from 2017, without a doubt.

The game is incredibly well made from every perspective, and despite feeling like the content was so deep that it would never end, the first thing I wanted to do when I beat it was to play it again to uncover everything I missed. No joke, I had some serious internal conflicts playing this game because while I desperately wanted to progress the very compelling main story and individual character stories, I also had a strong fear that I would miss some small detail somewhere that would lead to yet another super interesting series of adventures - and I did.

That's the thing that deserves the most praise in this game - the content. No other game that I've experienced has so carefully crafted dialogue, adventure, and theme into EVERY character you encounter. I don't just mean the "quest givers" or main characters, but every NPC you experience in the game (which semi-spoiler, includes every animal, btw) has something relevant to say to you. It's equal parts impressive and infuriating, because it just takes so much time to talk to every living thing on the world of Rivellon, and you never know when a small conversation can turn into an entire chain of quests that leads you to some amazing piece of gear or new abilities. Not only do all of the NPCs have dialogue, but every line of dialogue is voice acted - over 74,000 lines from what I've seen advertised, and it's damn good. The dialogue is very well written, I fell in love with the characters because of it, and while the content can be dark and brooding, it's also has some over-the-top cheesiness to keep you from taking the game too seriously - it felt like they nailed it here and found the perfect balance.

The story, the setting, the characters: they are what make this game so special. I have to thank the creators for presenting these things so masterfully that I had multiple memorable, emotional experiences.

For gameplay, the combat system has enough depth to keep you learning new combos, tricks, and strategies throughout your entire adventure. At the same time, it's approachable thanks to a clever UI, and it rewards you for playing it the way you want. You can build a team of four phsyical damage dealers, you can build a balanced team with a tank, archer, mage, and support, or you can go for two "lone-wolf" mages - and you can make it all work! Many parts of combat aren't ever explained to the player, but can be figured out through trial and error, reading the books that you pick up through the game, or a bit of online searching. The character building and progression should be familiar enough to anyone who has played an RPG before and takes a lot of inspiration from other games like D&D, and the interface generally does a great of showing you everything that's going on. The difficulty scaling could have been more creative, I think, for expert players who push the limits of the game mechanics and AI, but for anyone below that, the difficulty ratings do a great job of maintaining a challenge for the player regardless of their own skillsets.

The music is another exceptional part of the game. Borislav Slavov truly showed off his ability to convey emotion with songs like "Rivellon" and "Symphony of the Void," and if you're someone who turns off music when they play games, I suggest you allow this soundtrack to immerse you in the rich world on display. Moments of triumph, anxiety, mystery - they're all brought to life by the great music. Some seriously powerful feels hit me the first time I heard "Sing for Me," a sincere thanks to Mr. Slavov.

If you need more reasons to play the game, it supports multiplayer - which I don't actually reccommend doing until you've beaten the game because you'll likely miss out on some of the dialogue and cool little bits here and there as your friends inevitably wander away. They also released a Game Master mode that I've seen successfully implemented for an entire RPG campaign, and while it does have some bugs/limitations from my experience, it's still a working platform that comes for free with the game.

I almost always find reasons not to give games a perfect score, but in my mind, DOS2 is totally worthy of a 10/10 rating based on the sheer amount of content, the attention to detail, the character development, the compelling story, the satisfying gameplay mechanics, and a superb soundtrack. Sure, you will be able to find bugs, gripes, or issues, but there is nothing promised that this game doesn't deliver on, and it exceeded my expectations in every category.

I can't wait for more from Larian.

There's honestly nothing bad you can say about this game unless you were nitpicking about insignificant details. Normally, a game never deserves a full 10/10 unless the reviewer is just overhyping it, but this game really takes the Oscar home. It's just that good. It has significantly raised the bar for turn-based roleplay RPGs.

Building off of the original game's success, this sequel is not much different, but it certainly has a lot more variety and exploration. This game is immensely long (I'm about 100 hours into it so far and I'm only about halfway through), which is a surprise. It is so well done that it constantly keeps you hoping for the journey never to end. It is jam-packed with content that makes you enjoy spending hours perfecting your characters and exploring every nook and cranny.

Although the game "lacks" replayability, the sheer amount of content easily makes the game last as long as say, all ten Path of Exile acts. I am curious why this game doesn't have endgame map running, though. It would've been easy to implement. Hopefully modders can develop something similar to map running.

This game is best enjoyed with mods installed, even for new players. I highly suggest the faster run speed mod at the very least, because the movement in the base game is incredibly slow and will easily make you hate the devs for it (honestly, what a horrible game design decision). Nevertheless, the game is incredibly balanced and there is plenty for you to do, with or without additional mods installed. Avoid the extra monster mods unless you want the game to become masochistically hard!

The game has a very strong emphasis on roleplay and decision-making. Obviously, the safe way to play is to avoid antagonizing too many people, but of course, nobody is stopping you from doing so. You will be punished for mistakes and "misfires" in battle, so be sure to save often. None of your characters are locked to a particular type of hero, so feel free to experiment and change up builds as you see fit.

This game is mostly non-linear, which means that you have the freedom to explore as you please and to complete quests in whichever order you wish. No portions of the map are "hard-locked" as long as you know how to access them. I encourage you to forge your own path in the game.

The multiplayer in this game has not changed from its prequel; you designate some heroes for your friend(s) to use and they're free to do whatever they like without being locked to the host's progression. Occasionally you may have to wait on your friend if they initiate a conversation with an NPC and you are looking to progress further, but that's within expectation. It's a minor inconvenience at the beginning of the game when players are just starting off and not much is going on.

One thing I will add is that I believe the game is best played alone or with experienced players only, unless both you don't mind your friend(s) figuring things out for the first time. Because the game is massive (we're talking Skyrim-tier), you and your friend(s) are going to be playing one of the longest sessions ever in the history of co-op games. Luckily, you can save the game and resume it at any time, with or without your friend(s). The game can swap between single and multiplayer at any time.

All in all, you will easily get more than double your money's worth for this game. This game will absolutely make you crave other RPGs to play once you've beaten it. Prepare to pull all-nighters playing this game non-stop, as you'll never want to quit until you've beaten it. Which won't happen for a long time.

Game has good story, graphics. But battle system is awful. All "difficult" fights are scripted - enemies always have first turn and 6 AP. For example: if you character can cast only two spells, enemy "suddenly" cast 5-6 spells on single turn. So all difficulty of the game is to survive this first turn.

I know this seems like a low score considering all the praise this game gets, but hear me out. DOS2 is a pretty unusual sequel. It certainly feels like it was made by people who know how to make RPGs, but they're not the same people who made DOS1 and they have a completely different set of strengths and weaknesses.

On the bright side, the writing is better in this one. Even though your character is quite special, the storytelling feels less smarmy and more gritty. You're force to eat some humble pie before you earn your place as super special, with no unctuous imps jaunting around your sparkly coattails. The dialogue is better too. No more of the belletristic and melodramatic expositions the original DOS was full of, and the writers (usually) know the correct use of "and I". (If you think "we came here for Dave and I" is a grammatical sentence punch yourself right now.)

Yet, too much of what transpires is just not memorable. Granted, it feels like it might be if you knew the whole story and appreciated the full depth of its C&C. But, on the second iteration the game feels more or less the same as the first. I chose different characters and made different decisions, but I now see the breadth of the corridor and it mostly leads in the same direction. The only forks in the road are things that feel worse than on my first playthrough: not achieving my goals or having party members leave. So I'm giving up two thirds of the way through.

Why? Well, the other aspects of the game certainly aren't keeping me in. The combat is a step back from DOS1, which had some of the most enjoyable combat I've seen in an RPG. DOS1 had a large array of skills and more than 80% were useful. I found myself using almost every ability I had, wreaking havoc amongst my enemies, charming the one in a dozen imps, freezing them in their tracks or blowing up oil barrels. Not DOS2, which feels contrived and sloppily designed. Only nearly dead enemies are affected by anything interesting. Worse still, many skills affect only one of the two resistance bars, so a skilled--or cynical--player will use some party members to grind down one bar on one enemy and the other kind on a different enemy. The end result is that only a fraction of skills are genuinely useful and combat tends to remain the same for the entire game. Where is the wonderful balance of DOS1? Where is the variety?

I know that you might argue that I've only played the game on "classic" mode and that it's more interesting on harder modes. Maybe, but those harder modes are passable only because of "hack" builds players will learn about when playing classic mode because the game doesn't give you the freedom that it promises. You feel like being a powerful mage early on? No skill books for that. Tough. Your skill points are wasted. You think that particular skill is useful? Maybe. Some are resisted by armors and some aren't, and on tactician mode the armors are mercilessly long.

It doesn't help that the game seems designed to flip you the bird. The area of effect spells have friendly fire on the harder modes, and quite often by using them you'll be harming your party more than the enemies. Making thing worse, the areas aren't well defined this time. You can try to predict where that ray of fire will go, but it might be ever so slightly off and burn your party by mistake. The game seems to encourage you to hurt yourself. Poison potion? One click to drink and (usually) hurt yourself. Health? Two clicks. (Wouldn't want to heal by accident now would we?)

The armor bonuses are also annoying. I have a designated looter with high "lucky charm" skills that are magnified by "lucky charm" gear. It's not her fighting gear though. I have to go through a clickfest to equip those before every fight. I was thinking of having designated persuasion gear, wits gear, identification gear and bartering gear but I decided I didn't have it in me. Not fun, Larian. Nauseating is the better word.

Speaking of nauseating, the opening theme is horrible. Slavov is generally a pretty good replacement for the late Pokrovsky, but his pieces are too short for something as repetitive as DOS:2. Don't get me wrong, a few tunes are brilliant. The fact that your PC has his own theme on a chosen instrument is a wonderful idea. The "Listen" song was the best moment in the game. But all of that is drowned in dull monotony that, if anything, "Listen" is a catharsis for.

Speaking of catharsis, I wish someone would purge the quest logs of nonsense. Sometimes I feel like they belong to a different game, especially when it comes of how the quests are resolved. Are these bugs? Or are the devs hiding the other potential resolutions?

Over all, the high user scores say more about the horrible state of RPGs in 2017 than anything about DOS2. Here's hoping for a better 2018

This game is not just hard. Its absurd. There's no escalating challenge. Right from the get go any one single thing can kill you in two hits. For being stuck on an island with an alleged magic collar around your neck to prevent......ummmm.....magic, you can cast all kinds of crazy spells. Illogical!!
Second. Any enemy you encounter, doesnt matter if you outnumber them 4-1 you will be on fire, blind and slowed before YOU EVEN GET TO MOVE! The absurdity of that is beyond comprehension. The rest of the combat mechanics are just there to band aid over this ridiculous imbalance.

Now you might be thinking you can use your human brain to devise some smart tactics. Nope. They built in a failsafe to keep you from outsmarting an enemy. They all have teleport and invisibility. Laughing yet?

Finally the self indulgent and excessively narcissistic narration is both a nuisance and unecessary. The wordy dialogue is a muddy grind through choices you wonder if they have any effect.

The quest system is a confusing mess. You never know if you are supposed to do something or not. They are filled with moral conundrums. Not articulate and meaningful choices. One mission simply tells you to go kill some elf. Of course you have no chance at defeating said elf but why even bother?

I'm all for a little vague storylines in the beginning but there's a difference between mysterious and illogical.

The game evidences how such a small development team can create such a gigantic game world with a permanently varied atmosphere and the greatest freedom of play offers. As before, Divinity's combat is its best aspect, with well animated and really fun tactical encounters, made better with the added schools of magic, increased environmental surfaces, source powers and height advantages. Combat is kept varied with numerous enemy types and the ability to respec your characters and class. This is all conducted in a well-realised game world that's beautiful to look at and performs well enough at the recommended spec.

The game offers a vast level of freedom with how you approach the game, though I feel this is a bit of a double edged sword, given how easy it is break certain quests unknowingly when you deviate from the developer's intended progression, or do certain things unconventionally. Some of the quests are also quite buggy, with several journal entries not updating properly, or contradicting the entries from related quests or NPC dialogues. There were also numerous times where quests didn't close as intended or had really strange triggers for quest closure, leading to some confusion as to whether I was missing something or if the game was just acting up (online wiki generally confirmed it was more of the latter). I also experienced a bug related to audio where dialogue volume would randomly become very low, in addition to some other sporadic UI related bugs throughout the game. These bugs themselves were usually quite minor, but having to run into them on occasion certainly dampened the experience.

The UI itself is my other big criticism of Divinity, and pretty much mirrors the complaints I had from the first game with not much improved inventory management, and the annoying auto-addition of items to the hotbar. The UI could be more user-friendly with a dedicated tab for quest items, and the ability to customise and rename backpacks for easier sorting. I also feel like there could be better use of screen space, with certain UI screens made larger to minimise the level of scrolling and to read off information more easily. Tooltips, especially for skills also need to be expanded and made more informative.

With regards to the quality of the narrative, characters and overall writing, my impressions are fairly average. The story is perfectly functional but characterization and the general depth of the writing feels a bit flat and lacking in complexity or any strong themes compared to other modern cRPGS.

    Overall rating - 8.2/10

I'll start with the absolute best. The freedom.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 lets you decide completely yourself how to play. You can choose to be any combination of classes you want, hell you can go through the game merely running around invisible throwing barrels at people and summoning distracting kittens. Yet the class-creation is so damn satisfying, you will often face an opponent which has a certain skill and just restart the game because you just come up with the perfect class to utilize that skill.

The game really lets you out of the sandbox to play in the vast content-filled desert-oasis so to speak when you get out of Fort Joy. There are so many sidequests, I couldn't even do them all (even though I tried hard), and there are so many clever puzzles, situations and conversations.

I just finished the game, and for just a cherry on top, the game gives you this amazing recount of what happened to all the characters after you finished your journey family-romcom style.

I usually don't give perfect scores, but **** it 10 / 10, favorite game of all time. I can't recommend this enough. Now if you excuse me, I have a necromancer build to try out.

It’s an epic roleplaying experience, fully equipped with good choices and consequences, amazing customizability of your character, great stories, great characters, a not-soulless world and tight tactical turn based combat. And not just does it have choices but they feel like real choices where there may be options not immediately visible through some A, B or C options-system. The character customization allows for a variety of races, choose between many classes, character-traits, skills and you can even customize your freakin’ game-music. You can choose a pre-set or create a character from the bottom, which was of course my choice. While not entirely binding, the classes also offer distinct things like the Wayfarer’s ability to talk to animals. The races have unique traits such as the elves’ ability to see memories from eating bodyparts or the undead version of every race which has their own set of advantages in exchange for strong disadvantages. There is also a lot of racism in this world, in fact undead may be attacked unless they’re covered up. And that can be a pain in the ass if you’re dumb enough to somehow loose your undead character’s hood. Furthermore, what really places this game so highly in my regard is the world, stories and characters. The entire game just reeks of being a passion-project. You can feel through the god damn screen that the developers cared about this world, giving it character, making every actual character feel unique and interesting etc. Go to a game like Skyrim and talk to every person you meet in a city and then go to this game and talk to a few characters. So many of the characters are memorable, form their voice-acting to their personality to what they say to how you interact with them to all of it. The voice-acting is just spot-one. Once again giving the impression that the people behind it really gave themselves to making this great. Every single person and animal is voice-acted and voice-acted amazingly, often distinctly. You really start to care about (Or dislike for that matter) the individual characters and by extension the living and breathing world that they inhabit.

This game has simply everything you would need from a RPG experience. Surely game of the year and a milestone for the genre.
It's filled with so much content, that it will easily keep you entertained for long weeks or months.

That immersion, its most crucially vital part is utterly devastated when it comes in the way of the technological advancement of 1999.

Isometric was a "trick" to produce a near 3D world, without requiring the raw horsepower to accomplish 3D properly.

So why on earth are we still paying money for isometric trickery when any single goofball with Unity can produce far more immersive RPGs in proper FPS (or at the very least the halfa sed compromise of TPP.

I am not one who is all about bleeding edge graphics. I can readily tolerate reasonably old games. I also get it from a developer standpoint. If you do not have to spend so much time on the exorbitant amounts of manpower and hours to produce something up to today's visual standard, you can chose to go with lower resolution graphics which would hypothetically allow you to focus more on the story telling.

But again, this is an RPG and even the greatest story ever told is a waste if it actively encourages readers not to continue reading. The same is true of ALL Isometric, stop and go "gridlock simulators" that inexplicably have been having a second golden age as of late.

Knowing that the people behind this production put their all into this production I cannot simply give this a zero. However I have played games like Dragon Commander and Ego Draconis especially, that proves there is absolutely no excuse for pushing this antiquated tech of trickery when a fully 3D production did not suffer from narrative hiccups that this poor design choice is supposed to be trying to circumvent. With how much isometric ruins the game play, honestly 1 was being quite generous.

    Negative
    * Too long, should have been structured into more manageable hubs.
    * Too many confusing, unclear (sometimes a bit broken) quests
    * Too much loot, screen is often sprinkled with useless items. This made areas often a chore.
    * Ending felt a bit too loose regarding companions, especially ones with romantic interest
    * Performance can drop heavily if too many effects are going on
    * Source skills requiring "refueling", often in an evil way, takes a lot of fun out of using them

I almost gave up in Reaper's Cost due to the length, unclear goal and quest states. In the end I am glad I did not, but it was exhausting. All in all a really a good game.

I can see people giving 5 stars and I can see the game selected as GOTY on many sites. I have no problem believing, that this game is better than other games this year from all genres. But for me, it doesn't mean, that this game is absolutely awesome above very great games. No, it means, that the competition from all genres were mediocre at best, and this game is above mediocre. So why amI can see people giving 5 stars and I can see the game selected as GOTY on many sites. I have no problem believing, that this game is better than other games this year from all genres. But for me, it doesn't mean, that this game is absolutely awesome above very great games. No, it means, that the competition from all genres were mediocre at best, and this game is above mediocre. So why am I not giving 10 stars but only 7? Well, I'd love to give 7.5, but that's not an option on this site. It's almost hitting 8 stars, but definitely not 10. Let's see the positives: 1. Great atmosphere. There is a lot, i mean A LOT to do and whether or not the player is gonna do everything or not, it depends how long can someone fiddle around on an area. Despite some people claiming, that it can be difficult, there are some redundant side missions here, that actually won't really raise nor give any significant loot, especially if you happen to stumble upon a mission, that has 1 or 2 level lower opponents. 2. Great graphics and sound. While the birds eye view camera may not be everyone's cup of tea, the environment is drawn beautifully and the music is top notch, along with special effects and sound effects. 3. Great depth of gameplay. As I mentioned already, there is plenty to do, and nearly infinite combinations of gear and mixture of skills to be learned, as well as party selection and party training. The game can be also very long, depending how far the gamer will go to try and check everything. Ok, so here comes the reasons for 3.5 score: 1. Inventory/loot/equipment management. I can't think of a game, that I spent at least 50-60% of my time fiddling with my gear and equipment. It's now. literally 5 minutes travel -> find a book or a gear -> 15 min. switching gear, switching spells, identifying, selling, buying, dropping, adding, mixing, combining, cooking, experimenting, repairing comparing. It totally pulls the halt on the gameplay.
It's just gets annoying and boring. Just to progress along and get that extra edge from gear and spells and potions to beat a superboss or 1-2 level higher npcs, I have to carefully pick-and choose what gear I'm wearing and what spells I'm knowing and also my 3 other companions.
So it's a lot of dress-up-Barbie game going on, and it gets tedious after a while.
Also, the game feels like, you do have to reload that fight area at least once, because you got no clue what is about to hit you. There are perma-deaths ( you may turn into a cow, or insta-killed along with your party) with no warnings. You can easily walk into a super boss and get massacred.
Fights - Some fight can last an hour! And it isn't just because a lot of enemies to kill, but they are slow and taking their time, and I'm just sitting back and staring at the zombie slowly edging toward my character. So I'll go get a sandwich. Then I forgot, that the game is running, and 2 hours later I sit back to the computer and trying to remember what is going on.
Oh yeah, and the mission structure.
People like me, who doesn't have a lot of time to play many hours/day will loose track what they are doing or what they are supposed to do.
I just simply walk around now, trying to kill NPCs and pick up books and letters and see if I can get out of the area. I have completely lost the thread, all I know some bad guy want to kill me and I supposed to kill some bad guys. That's the main mission in a nutshell.
so the game is definitely not 10, but not even 8. I still recommend it to hardcore RPG players. Others, casual players shall be warned. People who have never played one of these type of RPGs, - should watch some let's play youtube videos first and decide later!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Easily the greatest game I think I've ever played. It's simply breathtaking the sheer amount of thought and care that went into this opus magnum of video games. So many other recent rpg's have completely missed the point of playing an rpg, they exchange the magic and wonder of discovery and roleplay for a focus on nothing but lame ass equipment systems and numbers. While that is fun and is also a part of this game to a degree, that can detract from the magic of losing yourself in a another world.

Quests aren't some box on the screen telling you to kill 10 goblins or retrieve a magic sword. They aren't visit x location and collect y. In this game they simply are. A quest might be the turtle in the cellar bemoaning it's unrequited love of a rat rhetorically. It might be as simple as stumbling across a couple of ensorcelled cows claiming to be human or as grand as stealing a warship and escaping a prison island. But never will you be asked to accept a quest yes or no, you simply do. You simply talk to the inhabitants of this magical world as if they were actually human and lose yourself in its splendor.

Maybe it's too hardcore for me; I just didn't find enough explanation for the mechanics of the game and missed basic things like quest markers that I've got used to. Also it ended up being a case of having to manually save and reload so many times that it felt like a necessary chore.

But first I'll start with what I liked. The environment is beautiful and fun to explore. Exploration and the discovery of secrets was the best part of the game for me. The unique characters provided are fun and interesting and each has unique skills that make basic remedial task of the game easier. Like the skeleton being able to switch to any race or the lizard being able to dig up treasure. The dialog trees are deep and thorough and involve many skills and abilities to advance in dialog which is cool. The voice acting is also great and adds to the believability of these characters. Your max party size is 4, and with 6 total unique characters each play through will be different.
Speaking of party size, I found the max size small compared to type of opposition you will face in the game. I though it would increase over the game but after 50 hours of play, it did not. You will nearly always be fighting enemies far numerous than you and most will also be of an equivalent or higher level. The old trick of doing every extra mission to advanced further in experience by later levels didn’t seem to work very well in this game. At least that’s what I noticed by level 8 or 9. Even enemies of equal levels have far more hit points and armor than any of your character could have at a similar level. Well, it seems I’ve moved into the bad territory so here goes…
The major problem I have with this game is the main problem I had with X-Com 2. It takes a game that should mostly be tactical and destroys any tactics you might have. Think you can take your fighter tank to pin down a couple melee fighters so your range attacker can shoot from afar? Nope. Every enemy has some type of teleportation effect that can move to your archer or magic user unimpeded. Even by level 3. It’s funny because I mention classes but there are not really any major class differences in this game. Every character can multi-class so every fighter can use range attacks, area of attacks, teleport and so on. When everyone is special no one is special. Bu-bye classes.
The addition of destructible and dynamic battlefields is, at first, genius but it is taken way too far in this game. I liked how the game made use of seemingly trivial elemental effects, like rain and fog to change the battlefield. But when barrels of fire and oil are literally everywhere on the map (like in the middle of a forest), and every single range spell also has an area of effect, the battlefield gets littered with so much damage-over-time debris that each character can’t take a step without taking more damage. It’s pretty laughable at times. I guess that’s why there are so many teleport abilities, especially for enemies.
This game doesn’t start out on level 1 and work to 20. It starts out at level 10 and calls it level 1 or 2. You are almost immediately introduced to resurrection scrolls and a way to craft them. That’s how often party members will be dying so there really is no penalty for it. A party member death should be a big deal in a game so devoted to story like this but it is treated as trivial and common place. Also, most spells do large amounts of area damage over time. Long gone are the days of level 1 magic missile being simple direct damage.
You can screw up a build so bad for a character that they are almost unplayable. That’s why respecs are free by the end of the first act. A sign of poor design, in my opinion. Also, a sign of poor design is that a character can have just one ability that makes them as powerful as a team of 4. That’s so a couple buddies can play online and feel uber powerful without a full party needed. Makes me think this game is geared more for the multiplayer experienced instead of single player.
Because this game has instant heal outside of battle with the bedrolls, battle difficulty is ramped to 100 to make things interesting. But that means they are excessively long and drawn out when same level enemies are far better equipped than you. And this is my biggest complaint with the game. The battles are so lengthy that you will need to dedicate hundreds and hundreds of hours to complete this game. That might be fine for some people. I just didn’t find myself liking this game enough to punish myself for that long.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Best Tactical RPG in recent years is how i would describe this game in one sentence. The isometric view might not be everyone's cup of tea, and before playing the Divinity Original Sin, neither was mine, once you get past the view you start appreciating game even more. It's beautiful in terms of graphics as far as these kind of games are considered, not something ultra realistic, but very much true to being a fantasy world. This year they introduced origin characters, which have their own personal missions, it's nice additions on top of the first game's follower quests. Its a shame only 4 of 6 could be there after act 1, so gives some sort of replay ability in terms of followers alone and there's the standard replay ability of main quest itself based on your actions, also depending on who you are as a main character out of the 6 origin characters, the dialogues and world interactions differ, which is very nice. There's also option to create generic main character to your liking but frankly speaking it's really not required these 6 characters cover every base. The combat is an improvement over the predecessor, the additional focus on source and some interesting elf mechanic of reliving the final moment of the dead is refreshing albeit the way this is achieved is a bit gross :P

The choices ar meaningful and have big impact on the gameplay. some of the dialogue choice leads to combat killing important NPCs gives more weight to the choices. the turn based combat is encouraging for cross class combos, allows you to plan the combat carefully.

Main story is very good from the get go, you feel a bit lost initially if you are not familiar to the lore but game does keep notes about important things in the world as part of journal entries.

A nice thing and not related to game itself but very important thing in the era of EA and ubisoft madness is there is practically no DRM. Its nice to have developers like Larian and CD Projekt Red in the era of profiteering at the expense of consumer interest and bad PC ports. Wish Devs understand that most pirates won't be their buyers if there's aggressive DRM that's not easily crackable, only small portion of them would buy that game, otherwise Witcher 3 would not have sold in millions. If a game is well made a lot of people will buy it. So there is more to gain by making a solid game than deploying a solid DRM on top of an average game. A DRM in the end consumes same resources that the game is running on and will always have a performance impact the more complicated it gets. so yeah you might gain 10-15% additional sales but if the game were better these numbers could turn into multiple times.

I really could not appreciate the simplification of all skill cost down to 2. It really removed much of planning depth. And the physical/magical armour blocking CC? Also a questionable choice. The story is entertaining, the people you find on the way are consistent, quests are good, your characters have a good variation to make the game fun to play again. Besides, the 'difficulty levels' also change a lot everything.
Voice acting is great. Graphics are great (and this is more and more important for me), interface is great, easy to use, intuitive.
A must for anyone who likes CRPG. And a great option for someone trying to enter CRPG world.

If you like turned based RPGs then I don't know why you don't already have this game. But if you don't.. please believe the hype! I've spent 220+ hours on this thing and I missed dozens of side quests, including quests that I had every intention of doing (that I thought were necessary for the story) but I mistakenly left the area for a new chapter.

I played on tactician and the A.I.

I played on tactician and the A.I. really fights you back. And not with cheap health bars (though they have them to) but with environmental stuff that you will want to incorporate into your own tactics. Also the way the games interfaces work, its a truly open game with many MANY ways to accomplish tasks. In fact since 99% of NPCs will trade with you, in late game, after losing to a boss character several times, I went back and engage him in conversation and bought all the items he had so he couldn't use them in battle when we fought!

There is no higher recommendation. I just dont give 10s

Two things i didnt like though, the song sung by a certain companion at the end of its story (good song but a bit far from what id expect in that ambience/environment, oh well it wasnt that bad...)
and some minor bugs at a few quests, those need some little tricks ;)

Overall a good game, enjoyed it, i expect to hear more from Larian studios, they have my respect.

Gameplay: this is likely the best aspect of the game. No other CRPG has the many and unique features of DOS2, likely thanks to this game using its own engine. Unlike in other isometric RPGs, the game is fully in 3D and so it is possible to interact, move, grab and attack a large number of elements of the environment, allowing a lot of creativity when solving the problems that are presented to us. One of the most famous aspects of the game is the interaction between elements. Thus, the pool of blood left by an enemy being stabbed can be frozen with an ice spell creating slippery surfaces. Water can be electrified which will paralyze enemies and oil or poisonous clouds can explode if set on fire. The enemies are ruthless and intelligent, blessing the fire that you have placed around them and transforming it into a healing blue fire, or cursing the harmless pool of water at your feet to transform it into a lake of worms and disease. The duration of the game easily reaches 100 hours and the progression, although limited to resolving the 4 acts of the game 1 after another, is extremely non-linear within each act, allowing you to solve the situation at your own pace and your own way, which gives a lot of replay value. Also interesting how the game lets you kill every NPC out there and still find a smart way of reworking the main quest and at the same time create consequences for what you have done. DOS2 is all about freedom of choices, both gameplay-wise and narrative-wise, and their consequences. Added to this, a multiplayer mode that really lets up to four players to share a world and leave their mark on it.

Setting: the graphics are already over the top for isometric RPGs, but they could improve in how detailed are the models of, at least, the main characters. The world is instanced in 4 big maps, which are very open, beautiful and overall really well crafted, filled with detail and secrets that make exploration a rewarding and a very entertaining process. There is also just the correct balance between battles and puzzles, so both elements keep being interesting until the end without becoming a tedious experience. The cities feel alive and the NPCs wandering both the cities and the roads always have interesting (or at least funny) things to tell us and/or sell us, sometimes even presenting us an exciting side quest. The NPCs will react to us committing a crime such as stealing from their pockets or from the nearby table, confronting us in different ways or actively looking for the culprit if we are sneaking. Regarding the sound aspect, every dialogue in the game is dubbed (even the ever present narrator voice) which is remarkable, and the music gets the job done and even gets to shine here and there. As good as the setting is, things could still be added to make it even better, such as a day-night cycle and a weather system.

Narrative: the narrative aspect is likely the weakest part of the game, as it happened in the first game too. About its good points, I could say the story is delivered in perfect dosage, giving you pieces of the plot little by little, always avoiding being overly verbose, and shifting depending on your methods of approaching a problem, which includes which character you use for that. Also the game is filled with really entertaining side quests, and the personal quests of your party members are no exception, keeping interesting and relevant until the end by adding new objectives with each arc. Another innovative option is how the character creator lets you play as one of the party members which gives an obvious replay value. Despite all this, the plot is however, not at the level of complexity of popular CRPGs, nor are the party members that, even with their very good side quests, just lack enough dialogue to avoid flatness. Same goes for the antagonists, that lack the relevance you would expect from them and never get to the point they should be, being physically absent for most of the game and sometimes even bordering the comical and the cliché in their scarce appearances.

In summary, DOS2 is one of the surprises of the year and both its gameplay and its world should be the role models for the CRPGs to come. Regarding the narrative, there is still a lot of room for improvement.

    Charming old-school party RPG.
Not perfect experiments with armor system but quality evolution of classic mechanics.
    Close to promised pen-and-paper freedom.
The best thing that has happened to the genre in last ten years.

Wow this game is a huge improvement on the last one, so much more comfortable to play, no more reading encyclopedias to get useless information. The story is actually something you can play through and not read through. The new combat system is good but maybe not an improvement. I still enjoy it and its definitely better than most other games in that regard let alone in this year. I don't understand why people are hyping this game so much. Best RPG ever? No.

Compared to the first DOS game this may be bigger but it isn't necessarily better. The story is pretty much the same as Divine Divinity, Divine Divinity 2 and DOS: your character was chosen to save the world, you just have to jump a lot of hoops first so you can become powerful enough to do so. That includes doing a lot of good guy stuff (saving stolen eggs for chickens!) but also working for genocidal maniacs.

The combat system is more complicated and more difficult by stacking most of the fights against you. Best example is how the enemies are always all over the place while your party stands neatly together. There is a "party planner" since one of the patches where you can choose where everyone stands. But as far as most AoE spells concerned your party still starts every fight neatly together. Unless split your party and have you characters enter combat one by one. Which is just dumb.

The UI is still a bad joke. Want you best bartering guy to sell things? Prepare to spend a lot of time in inventory cleanup. Want to use the crafting system? Bring a lot of time and patience!

Role playing is also rather thin. Most of the conversations just railroad you into one path. Except for skill checks which usually force you to reload and pick the right character for this conversation. FUN!

Long story short. If you absolutely need an RPG and you liked the first DOS you could do worse. But I would recommend you wait until it is a lot cheaper. Maybe play Divine Divinity I and II. Except for the graphics (and the final part of Divine Divinity I) they are better games.

BEST IN GENRE (D&D) that I've played. Each battle is a unique challenge. My first play-through took over 100 hours and I was sorry when it ended. It was a relief to give my brain a rest, though. The only reason it isn't a 10 is the top-down, turn-based combat. For those who prefer strategic thinking, this is a gem.

A true masterpiece, Proudly the game of the year for me

Feel there might be a lack of "melee weapon" skills. There is 2 melee ones (~warrior/~Rogue) 1 Ranged (~hunter) 1 weird polymorf 1 summon 4 is spells. (fire/lightning/ice&healing/Earth&Poison) Feels like there should be more skills to choose from. Also, everything turns into Cursed fire in the end whatever you do.

Divinity Original Sin 2 improve every aspect of original game. There is so many ways to approach quests it's amazing. For someone like me who explore every inch of the map. finding few ways to get to the enemy castle left me speechless. In this game you can be TRULY ANYONE.

Original Sin 2 is a masterpiece. Other companies should learn from them how to make role playing games.

História sublime, sistema de combate fantástico e uma liberdade de builds maravilhosa.

Se eu pudesse dar 9,5 seria a nota mais justa. O sistema de iniciativa realmente incomoda um pouco e foi uma decisão feita pela própria Larian.

If Divinity: Original Sin 2 had only been an enormous single-player RPG, it would still be far better than most of what you could compare it to. The fact that it has such well-implemented co-op and a user-friendly game master mode gives it a tremendous amount of value at a time where such a thing can feel like a rarity. Even if you never touch all of its various components, you'll still be left with a role-playing game that exemplifies the best aspects of its genre.

For those looking to get into cRPGs, and even for those just searching for a great RPG, Divinity: Original Sin II is heartily recommended. It has all the virtues that fans of the subgenre have extolled and wraps them up in a way that is much friendlier to newcomers than every other title I've tried. Combine that with fantastic writing, a highly engaging combat system, and great design, and you have another standout RPG in a year packed full of them.
