I get the creator's vision and why they wanted to make D3 this way, but this really is a case of if it isnt broken, dont fix it. Diablo 2 didnt becoming a best-seller because they changed a ton of things in diablo 1, they kept what worked, fixed what didnt, and added new things. In this it seems like they kept almost nothing (bad) fixed what was fine (bad) and added new things (good). I wanted to like this game, i really did. But playing this game brought flooding back good memories of Diablo II in a bad way - as in I'd rather play diablo 2. Blizzard didnt become popular because it wanted to be a crowdpleaser, they came up original ideas and a original game and set a trend. This isnt going to be a benchmark for hack and slash, i bet the schaefer brothers are laughing right now. The plot was interesting and creative but...i can find so many loopholes in the story - you didnt even mention how diablo came back after destroying the soulstones in d2? Lack of customizability means im only going to play this game for 5 playthroughs and then thats it (instead of a possible 21 playthroughs - 7 classes, 3 specialisations). Blizzard made a reputation with WoW and Diablo 1/2 and then threw that all away and focused on money making schemes instead of the kind of company that makes a game because thats what theyre best at. You can do better than this Blizzard, and im not the only one who thinks so. I think you made a mistake letting the schaefer brothers go, they were your biggest asset for diablo 3, now theyre going to make the kind of game they were known for, and we're all going to buy it. Sorry to say this but im going to be recommending Torchlight 2.

This online only DRM **** has got to go in games. Blizzard integrated an online only feature to prevent hacking/piracy, yet the tables have turned on them - there is currently an exploit allowing people who have done nothing but play the game to have their session ids captured and then their accounts hacked. It doesn't require a trojan horse, it doesn't matter if you have an authenticator - it is a security hole that they overlooked. Even people who do not play in public games can be targeted by this exploit. It is absurd. Blizzard has shifted the entire burden of their problems to the user. Admittedly, they have to fix the exploit, but it is now the user who has to suffer for it because s/he cannot log in without having his/her account jeopardized. In terms of gameplay, I find the game pretty fun. A lot of the abilities (e.g. the Demon Hunter's) are WoW copies, but what makes it fun is switching out your abilities to prepare for certain styles of fights. The graphics, while not astounding, are pretty good. The storyline, while somewhat cheesy and predictable, is also entertaining. My only complaint about the gameplay is that Diablo 3 has always been a game that i've played with friends, so limiting party size to 4 is pretty weak.

The ultimate problem that I have with Diablo 3 is not the content of the game itself, but with how Blizzard has forced the user to comply with a lot of bs to play the game. Requiring online only play (even for single player), integrating a "real money auction house", removing lan play, and demonstrating inadequacy in terms of preparedness for launch and security measures are real concerns that the company has yet to honestly address. Instead of looking to their audience for feedback like other up and coming game companies, Blizzard has been banking on their reputation and abusing the end user, ultimately just seeing him or her as one of the many millions of suckers to have tolerated their ****. For the record, I'm one of them for now.

60£ for a game lasting 2 days in 2012 is not acceptable.. no endgame at all, 3-4 years old graphic, no player customization.. Worst screw up game of the century.. they better collect all the money they can in first month.

With the daiblo franchise they could have done sooooooooo much better

Very poor. The game was developed for one goal, the Real Money Auction House.

Anything is related to Items, not customization at all. Diablo like bitter dark ahmosphere gone. Comic cartoon WoW like'ish gfx and character behavior. Story, a joke. Long time playing factor, minimal. You're cutoff from the rest of players pretty much, no feeling for the "rest" of the Diablo world anymore.

Only 4 players ingame (I guess for later console versions), no hostile, pvp. But those are minor issues. The real deal is again, anything leads to the fricking auction house because you need items. To "deny" the usage is of course possible, but seriously, if you want to have any chance to keep pace you have no choice. There is no single-player modus anyway.

The inclusion of online only is annoying but fair enough to avoid piracy, HOWEVER this point is completely lost when they include an auction house designed to rake in real world money for them. Such corporate cynicism injected into a once magnificent franchise saddens me, and this is only amplified by the insane amount of time that Blizzard has poured into this to achieve such a substandard result. I like the concept of the game. Most parts feel much like the original game. There is still a significant amount of tweaking that needs to be done for balance and customizing your char. The connection issues make it unplayable. In 2012 this just shouldnt be an issue and is a direct reflection of the poor planning and lack of respect for the gaming community by Blizzard.

I've put in many hours so far on all characters except witch doctor- this is my summation:

COMBAT: Little has changed since diablo 2, this game is still a clickfest with very little tactical thought required to be successful. A similar experience can be had playing flash arcade games online. Don't expect DragonAge here.

RPG: No user control over looks or ability (i.e. skill point distribution). Role-players will find it difficult to form a connection with their chosen hero.

STORY: Standard dark fantasy fare. Consider the lore of Milton's "Paradise Lost" mixed with the simplicity of David Eddings' "The Belgariad" though without the charm of the latter. The few 3D animated cutscenes, however, are truly outstanding, though at a few minutes apiece they are noticeably sparse and your character will feature in none of them.

LOOT: Loot has always been the driving force behind players grinding out so many hours in diablo 1 and 2. Inventory management still constitutes a large portion of the gameplay as it did in its predecessors. The uniqueness of your character will be defined by their equipment.

GAME MECHANICS: Basically every class should use a weapon with fast attack speed and a shield with heavy armor. The item and damage mechanic makes any other combination or selection of weapon subpar. Fans of D&D-style systems will be horrified.

CHALLENGE: This is an easy game. The fact that one must play through the entire game repeatedly in order to reach more challenging difficulty levels was acceptable in 1998; in 2012 it is frustrating. If you're a seasoned gamer who starts every new game on high tier difficulty settings then it will be many hours before this game becomes challenging (even if you insist on soloing). The simple gameplay, however, does mean you can grind your way into hell or inferno modes with one hand and only partial attention if you are willing to put in the hours. COMMUNITY: Its early days yet and the US server community is still largely friendly and excitable. Ages vary considerably. Chat channels and party management systems are very dated. Spamming from gold services is already significant in chat (blocking communication or reporting is, to date, ineffective)

SUPPORT: Random "scheduled" server maintenance, almost daily (for up to 8hrs), has marred the early experience of many gamers. Adding to their ire is the requirement to connect to server in order to play singleplayer. For Oceania gamers server downtime will happen in your peak playtimes if on the US server.

PLAY IF YOU LIKED: Torchlight, Bastion, Titan Quest, Drakensang Online, online Zombie flash arcade games
AVOID IF YOU EXPECT: Neverwinter Nights, DragonAge, Witcher, Elder Scrolls, Guild Wars

Writing this review I am around 40 hours into the game, halfway through nightmare difficulty - I feel like I'm ready to review it. Diablo 2 was no different for me and God only knows how many nights I spent playing it. I was a teenager when D1 came out and I was blown away by it spending countless hours in the dungeons and hells spawned under Tristram. Diablo 2 was no different for me and God only knows how many nights I spent playing it. I am a long time fan of the series and I was expecting Diablo 3 with great hesitation - after all can you make a game as good as Diablo 2 13 years later? The answer is simple - Blizzard is a kind of company that knows how to deliver and live up to absolutely crazy expectations... I give this game a 10. And it's not to pump up it's score in view of all the 0 marks given by people pissed off by DRM (I don't question their anger although I'm lucky enough not to have had any major problems apart of initial hours when it was somewhat expected). I give this game a deserved 10 because I haven't had that much fun playing a game for years. Diablo 3 immediately appeals to my nostalgia towards the series reviving all the great memories I have of the previous iterations and yet it brings so many cool new things to the table. The presentation, look and feel of the game are all excellent. Graphics are absolutely beautiful and the landscapes you are going to encounter will leave you breathless. The sound and music suit very well - hellish guitar riffs and ambient music of the desert will make you turn your volume up. The interface is clear, simple and functional. The story is OK, CGI spectacular as always from Blizzard. The skill system is absolutely brilliant - each of your 20 or so skills have several modifier runes often completely changing the skill. The so called Elective Mode lets you mix any combination of those runed skills together which leads to amazing amount of builds... every time you discover a build that works together and pump it up with the right gear it feels like you just invented yet another way to be powerful and is extremely satisfactory. The skill system itself is the big part of the game and one that provides the most fun. It replaced the "gearing game" to some extent - now it's not so much about upgrades of your gear - it's mostly about correct gear for correct set of skills. People see it as "dumbed down" and streamlined, I see it as refreshed and giving the game a whole new aspect. The only negative thing I can say about D3 that it's a bit too short although the replay value is obviously there with increased difficulty levels. I can't wait for the expansion already. So pick your arsenal and start ripping through hordes of demons. If you have a stable connection and patience for occasional down time (which I'm sure will be sorted by Blizzard soon enough) do yourself a favour and buy this game. I guarantee you it will provide you with hundreds of hours of pure fun. Expand

I've been burned multiple times by server outages and the classes all play the same. This game is all about loot and DPS and loot is made a little redundant by the Auction house having so many readily available items. It went from a dungeon crawler, like 1 and 2, to a game that is painfully linear. Blizzard has taken a game that you could play without using the internet and placed it on overloaded servers that they do not provide support for. The lag from the aforementioned servers makes the game virtually unplayable at certain times, significantly decreasing the enjoyment of the player. The dynamics of the game itself have not changed despite the progressions in graphics capabilities and platforms. Blizzard chose to utilize a platform that both Mac and PC can use despite the fact that Direct X is significantly more common among PC gamers (no true gamer owns a Mac... they're garbage). This platform causes PC users' graphics cards to reach temperatures that not even BF3 induces. Now for the game itself, you cannot use your own keybinds, such as WSAD for movement, you're limited to four slots for abilities, not to mention the fact that there are numerous bugs within the game itself that limit performance. Diablo 3 was turned into a pure RNG game that has gear so poorly itemized throughout the entire game that it displays only the utmost disparaging incompetency in the designers. This game was far too simplistic, the characters never stop talking, the creatures and abilities are all from World of Warcraft (even with similar names to boot), this game lacks originality in every single form. They even had the audacity to reuse the Diablo 2 soundtrack for Diablo 3. I searched tirelessly for any small sign of originality or enjoyment in any aspect of this game. To my dismay, there was not a single one.
For the fanboys out there (most of which who were born long after Diablo 2 was released), Blizzard is making this game pay-to-win. That's right! Pay-to-win! So you can use your parents credit cards and buy gear from the auction house! Rumor has it, these items will not be poorly itemized, and you get that extra special feeling when you show your friends how awesome those pixels are that you payed real money for!

    2. The availability I have to play the game.

On the day of release I got home from work 30 minutes after the servers had come up (I live in Australia). I was surprised to get home and find out from my friends that they were still not online playing the game we had all been waiting months and even years for. I was kind of expecting the servers to be a bit congested with millions of people logging in so I acted patiently and waited while spamming my login button. An hour and a half later I made it online and held a stable connection and began to play.

The game itself is amazing. I have never felt so compelled to want to continue to play a game like I did in Diablo 3. The skill progression is great, the difficulty settings are good for players on any ability and the graphics, monster AI and story are all very polished. If I had to rate the game out of 10 I would give it a 9.5. There is not much that could be improved in this game at all and I am thoroughly enjoying every moment I can play Diablo 3.

This is where my review takes a negative turn. Living in Australia there are no localized servers for me and I experience around 200 ping to the US servers which I am forced to play on in the best case scenario. I have a very strong and stable internet connection and very rarely lag in any game but playing Diablo 3 online, even in single player mode, has been a nightmare. Most of the time I sit at around 450ms and get spikes where I will sit at over 1000ms for minutes at a time rendering the game absolutely unplayable. The lag and 'rubber banding' affect on my character infuriates me when I am trying to play at higher difficulties and can be blamed for many of my characters deaths whilst playing.

With no localized servers and no offline play it is extremely disappointing to have to play this game in such horrible conditions. What is stopping blizzard from making the game playable offline? Is it not possible to make all gear obtained in an offline mode Bind-to-account to prevent bots and cheaters from gaining an advantage?

Blizzard really slipped up on this one but I have faith in them to redeem themselves and resolve this widespread issue. If you are reading this wondering whether or not to purchase this game, Yes. But be prepared to become very frustrated with dodgy servers and horrendous lag.

Diablo III was fantastic, it's provided me the most fun I've had in the last year playing a PC game, that's counting Skyrim, ME3 and all the other good games that have come out in the past year. If leveling up and grinding through Normal/Nightmare/Hell/Inferno searching for gear is what you want to do, Diablo is the perfect place to do it. Excited for an expansion to continue the story and add more content, but what we've got right now is pretty darn awesome too. Expand

Diablo III is an OK game that you can play in 5min to 45min intervals if you'er lucky. A single player game with 'always play online' DRM... why? First off - my internet connection stability and/or router setup and/or ISP setup works fine for any game except, apparently, D3. So don't try to sell me some router or ISP trouble shooting. So don't try to sell me some router or ISP trouble shooting. The problem lies with the Diablo 3 and it's servers (in combination with my setup). PERIOD. The game is OK despite the low-fi graphic and lack of old school Diablo atmosphere but the issue for me is that I get booted before I finish a quest. Thus I need to repeat it, all the while collecting experience points making be an all mighty Barbarian who is way too powerful for the area I'm still stuck in. This may sound good but it's not. The enemies are sooo weak in comparison now that I sit there chopping away like they are on a conveyor belt and I'm a factory production line worker. I've never even used a potion and I'm on level 12! Why not give us the option to play offline with the trade-off being that offline created characters cannot (ever) go on-line? So, to Blizzard: Fix your game or give me my money back! Expand

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
