To proppery begin a review of Reaper of Souls, I must first make a short summary of my feelings towards the original Diablo 3. I thought it was terrible - the story made no sense, it was full of gameplay issues, the whole thing could be beat within 8 hours (streching it) and overall: it wasn't fun. It wasn't good. It wasn't the Diablo 3 I had waited 10 years for.
    Fast forward to a month

Fast forward to a month ago, when patch 2.0 got me interested, so I installed the game again, and I was quite surprised to find myself enjoying it. I even came back for more. I gave it some thought, and when I took into consideration that the game director was changed, I thought I would give him the benefit of the doubt, and 40 bucks along with it, and get the upcoming expansion.
Cometh the 21st of March, it was a stormy night, and I was up until 5 AM with my clanmates and friends, having an online launch-party for a expansion we, honestly, did not expect to be even half as good as it was.
Reaper of Souls was the best thing Blizzard could have brought up to the table on such a short notice as almost two years. I am sure that with the now proven capabilities of the new director, there will be much more and much better to come.
Graphically, what Reaper of Souls brought to the mix is amazing. It has a much more Diablo feel tha any of the previously visited locales. I fell in love with Westmarch from the moment I started Act 5. The only grudge I have with Reaper of Souls graphically, that the pre-designed tilesets that are made to be swapped randomly with every map generation are too chaotic at times, but this is a flaw I suppose we will see fixed.
The Sound in this game is better than ever. Don't get me wrong - I like the Diablo 3 soundtrack, but I found that most of the tracks there are weak, I even used to pay with the music off. There were just around 3-4 tracks I liked, like the Main Theme and Tristram's theme. Reaper of Souls has a much better musical score - the compositions are much more classical and moody. Too bad the game didn't come with the OST, which I will most certainly get. The voice work, as typical for Blizzard, is indeed top-notch, though I did find some of the new lines for certain classess to be somehow not in character.
Storywise, I think this is the best we are going to see of Diablo 3. Don't get me wrong - I know bad storytelling when I see it, but take a moment to remember how blatanlty stupid the original story was, and further more - take into account that it's a Diablo game and it does not need that much of a story. But I must give props to the team for thinking up additional story-lines, which are very interesting. Also, I have to mention that every character-class has his own little dilhema in the story - it's not the same for everyone, and it is very well thought out. I believe most major critics missed this, because if you noticed - they all have played with just one class, so I hope more people have noticed this. It's actually pretty damn awesome, though poorly executed. But again - it's a Diablo game.
Gameplay is the core of this game, and with Reaper of Souls it is better than ever. The new loot system makes the game more fun and addictive, I find myself playing every day, even if it is just for a quick Bounty - the new Adventure mode that they have included is not only the perfect alternative for leveling, if you have grown tired of listening to Azmodan giving away his battle strategies (because, you know, master strategist!), but also very rewarding for loot-hunting and exploring. The only grudge I have is the class addition - it is only one, and not a good one in my opinion. Not only that I dislike him, but we must take into account that not everyone has the patience to level up such a tanky class. He isn't hard, he is just slow and boring. I don't think the Crusader is useless or doesnt fit in, but rather I think that Blizzard should have included two classess, so that everyone gets a shot at something new, not only paladin-wannabes.
Overall... speaking as a man who hated Diablo 3 - a game that he was waiting for for years, a man who's favorite game used to be Diablo 2... I must say I got my Diablo 3. And I most certainly look forward to the next expansion. I don't think we'll be seeing PvP anytime soon, but they have also concluded the story-ark, so I'm actually quite enjoying the suspense. I have no idea what Blizzard's Diablo 3 team will come up with for the future, all I know is that I am much more trusting of them now.

PS: I must admit that most people writing reviews here are talking nonesence. Act 5 is longer than the entirety of the other 4 acts (seriously, it takes about 7 hours (including side-quests) to beat the original 4 acts, and it took me 9 hours to beat Act 5, and I have not yet seen everything). I just wanted to mention this to everyone who is confused about people accusing Reaper of Souls of being a DLC - it's not - long new act, new class, new mode - it has nothing to do with DLC.

Loot 2.0 has given back to Diablo its known reward mechanic, tho i must say the game still drops legendary in a fashion more often then it should, but no damage here...your yellow items will top that legendary after some levels. Set items are hard to find. Very hard (to me, at least). Didn't play the Act V, but from what i've heard, it's the best so far. The way the crusader fights, his dialogues, even the way he looks, remind me very much from D2 paladins. There is some room for improvement, as always, but the game now is fun and you easily get addicted to it. Sure, they could made more side quests for the first 4 Acts, but as it is, you'll have some fun with the crusader. The maps still are a bit confusing, specially if you expect something as linear as D2 maps, but they do the job. Too bad Blizzard lost opportunity to add more content in old places. Would be nice to get off the sewers in Caldeum and make some quest at ground level, inside the city, for a change. And the items could have more....personality, as they had in D2. Sometimes, a 4 gem socketed normal flail was much better than any rare or magical weapon at that level. The font they use to describe the items on floor is too small, comparing to D2. That font gave much more visibilty to your loot, since its size and rectangular background helped in terms of visualization. The way it is now, sometimes you pick items and don't even now what you got or even if you got until you open your inventory. I hope they fix this on the next patch/expansion. Nonetheless, the game is back on its track. Give it a shot, if you are D2 fan. You'll enjoy it. Expand

To all the haters that claim this expansion is a paid bug fix patch, it isn't. You didn't have to buy Reaper of Souls to take advantage of the changes made in Patch 2.0.x, so stop claiming that.

To all the haters that claim this expansion is a paid bug fix patch, it isn't. You didn't have to buy Reaper of Souls to take advantage of the changes made in Patch 2.0.x, so stop claiming that.

The additions of Adventure Mode and Nephalem Rifts give Diablo 3 far more end game value than the original release had, thus justifying, in my opinion, the somewhat short Act V storyline.

The combination of the Loot 2.0 changes with the Enchanting function of the new artisan, the Mystic, makes finding and then, if necessary, tailoring new gear to enhance your playstyle much easier and not tied to the original release's "Auction House Tycoon sub-game." Critics who say the Loot 2.0 changes were a stopgap and that the loot wall is just pushed back further, I'd like to remind people that not all item affixes are applicable to the calculated metrics of Damage, Toughness, and Healing. There are affixes which affect certain damage types, skills, utility, movement, etc. and cannot be accurately reflected in those three "upgrade/downgrade" metrics, so Blizzard opted to not mislead players by attempting to shoe-horn them into those metrics. These are the affixes which ignorant critics have missed when they claim the loot wall was just moved back a bit, as these affixes are build-enabling effects that invite players to redefine their playstyle in order to achieve greater power over their enemies on the field of battle and the streets of Westmarch. What many people fail to realize is that the changes made with the Loot 2.0 system have effectively removed the one-size-fits-all cookie-cutter mentality which many players were forced to assume in their approach to certain classes. Are there still builds that are widely used? Yes, but the diversity of viable builds for each of the classes has increased dramatically with the advent of these build-shaping legendary affixes.

The announcement right at the expansion's launch that Seasons, a new game mode akin to Diablo II's ladder system, will be added to Reaper of Souls as part of the next major patch was a big win for players who were leaning on Blizzard hard for the better part of two years to deliver this sought-after feature. It definitely shows that Diablo III's development team is very aware of players' desires and willing to satisfy them where they can.

The "organizational" features added by RoS, Communities and Clans, have really made the game feel more social, which is something it was lacking in the original release. The announcement that the development team is working on bringing some sort of trading functionality to Clan members makes this social feature more than just a custom chat channel with special username flair.

Giving extra points for the expansion's smooth launch is justified because, in this day and age, digital downloads and dedicated multiplayer servers have made it incredibly difficult for studios to deliver a stable launch on Day 1, with all of the extra capacity which would normally be required to deal with the incredible traffic but may never be even close to fully utilized again. Building that capacity up can be a massive expense for the company, so you need to accept that either your launch experience could suck or you may be asked to pay more money for the game. Blizzard delivered a launch without either of those downsides, so THAT is worthy of praise.

All in all, Reaper of Souls is a phenomenal expansion pack which will continue to deliver additional features in the future and sets up a second expansion pack VERY nicely. Bravo to the entire Diablo development team and all of the other Blizzard teams which worked on the game!

Normally I would just ignore comments, but after reading some of the uninformed and ignorant bull that people have been posting, I felt I had to give an unbiased non-jaded opinion of the game.

Starting off: THIS IS NOT DIABLO 2, IT WILL NEVER BE DIABLO 2. 100% of the negative reviews are by people who are holding a grudge and would never have been happy regardless of what the game was.

Starting off: THIS IS NOT DIABLO 2, IT WILL NEVER BE DIABLO 2. 100% of the negative reviews are by people who are holding a grudge and would never have been happy regardless of what the game was.

After the debacle that was the D3 release, I feel its important to give Blizzard proper credit for a painless and seamless expansion release. No lag, no disconnects, no waiting in lines, no logging off, no problems...zero.

The introduction of loot 2.0 revitalized the game, and better rewards play, without feeling too easy. Finding groups of people to play with is simple, fun and let's the player set an appropriate difficulty without being the impossible wall that was old D3 Inferno. Adventure mode adds a new element of randomness that solves the issue of having to run the same stuff over and over again (Baal runs anyone?)

The removal of the RMAH feels like they removed a cinder block off everyone's shoulders and was long overdue. Most items / gems / crafting mats are now account bound though, preventing from trading or selling. But you can trade legendary drops with group members for up to 2 hours (similar to WoW LFR)

To address the "lack of character building". The introduction of the new legendarily items allows for players to create unique and entirely new builds / play-styles based solely upon the gear you have (Deal more damage while moving, increase pet damage) . Pretty much any skill set you end up choosing can be successful, which allows for greater freedom and the ability to try everything without feeling locked into a "Best build".

Act V is about the length of Act II depending on difficulty and player skill (A little under 3 hours on Inferno I in a group of four). Overall the environments seem new and fresh, along with the numerous new enemy types with cool abilities they added.
The price is the standard 30 dollar expansion, this hasn't changed for years yet people still somehow find a way to complain about the price.

Overall some decent improvements, Blizzard has already announced the introduction of ladders in the next major content patch, and down the line we should look forward to hopefully more positive additions. If you hated D3 and are still angry at Blizzard, chances are you'll feel the same way about ROS.

TL;DR I'd give the game a solid 8 / 10, worth picking up for a fun monster smashing experience.

I decided to give blizzard one more leap of faith and it totally paid off. Act V is huge is comparison to the other acts (I would say roughly 2/3 the size of the main game) and is arguably the best act in the game and has many great environments, bosses, and enemies to fight. The crusader is a great addition and really feels in the paladin type of roll that has been sorely missing and the class feels very weighty and powerful (plus I love the idea of vanquishing demons as a warrior of the light.) The dreadful auction house is gone and is replaced with loot 2.0 which has you actually finding good items that fit you and you find them regularly but at the same time not too often so they still feel special. In particular I was most impressed with adventure mode which sounded kinda dumb to me at first but it truly is a legitimate end game and makes you feel like your not being corralled from place to place like in the campaign. Another great part of adventure mode is that the objectives and randomized in each zone so it never feels rinse and repeat and then great loot drops in it as well on top of having random maps to complete for every 5 quests you complete in the adventure mode with even more promising loot. All of this creates a much better late game scenario for d3 that feels more open ended and rewarding for the player. They also completely threw out the old difficulty system that made the game a complete slog when leveling characters. Now you cant pick any difficulty at the beginning (there is alot more of them than before by the way) and the game auto tunes to your level. The higher the difficulty the higher the xp and loot/money which is how it always should have been. Clans are also added as well which should strengthen the community and allow you to meet and make bonds with people that play the game. Mystic artisan gets added as well which allows you to augment your gear as you please if you are have a decent item but need it tweaked or want it remodeled which is a huge plus for this kind of game. Honestly my only serious complaints are that the vanilla d3 classes feel like they didn't have a whole lot added to them despite the level cap being raised to 70 despite a few new skills and their new item sets. Story is also weak again with the typical bad guy has raised demons and you must kill him before he destroys humanity blah blah blah. Overall though those problems are simply not important the amount of things this expansion gets right ways those negatives out a million times over. As I said blizzard failed me once but I took a leap of faith with them and it totally paid off. I suggest you take that leap of faith as well. Expand

Reaper of Souls brings about a hugely improved experience over Diablo 3.

I'll be upfront with this review and say my score is honest, and as somebody who enjoyed over 200 hours of vanilla Diablo 3. I'll also say that I'm a glutton for quick, easy progress. I think that most everybody is, with the huge success of games like Cookie Clicker and other idle games. People want things thrown at their faces, and they want initial results to be largely beneficial.

Which brings us to a rather large problem with Diablo 3. Despite the fact that I love it and will still like play it for another 200 hours, improvement always will become exponentially more difficult and with fairly limited build diversity and item blandness, the game really doesn't have much progression. The only way for Blizzard to change this is to continually add new legendaries, add new interesting primary and secondary affixes to regular items, fix broken affixes that have little meaning, and introduce a recurring powercreep to keep players hooked. This is fundamentally flawed, but it is actually what would keep players playing.

Adventure mode broke the old tedium and introduced an entirely new method of "farming": killing the easiest difficulty of monsters for the highest level of gear. Blizzard needs to fix this. If you can farm on the higher difficulties, it should always be a lot more rewarding than farming on the easiest difficulties. Loot on higher difficulties needs buffed.

Another sad fact is that you can't trade those spare legendaries with friends who weren't there at the exact time you got the item. This frankly sucks and makes the loot problem described earlier more significant as non-improvement items are bound on account and are essentially junked when your friends could use them.

There are lots of problems with the game, but because I feel the game is heading in an extreme positive direction and I already enjoy the game I'm giving it a 9.0 out of 10.

In short, Reaper of Souls has made me a much happy D3 fan, and while it will never be a true D2 clone like many reviewers here desire, it has the chance of becoming so, so much more, if only Blizzard lets it.

    Pros:
*Reworked loot system feels much more rewarding.
*Adventure mode allows for less linear farming.
*Patches are making the game more enjoyable constantly; Blizzard IS listening.

    Neutral:
*AH / RMAH removed. It happened.

    Cons:
*Itemization is crap and would require powercreep to maintain fun, but is getting better.
    *BoA hurts the loot system.
*Many affixes still don't work in any meaningful way, some legendaries are broken and roll incorrect stats.

The game is heading in the right direction, Still needs a "real" form of Player vs Player, the brawling system is terrible and was rushed in since blizzard promised Player vs Player at launch of Diablo 3, however I'd rather wait for a viable solution to that, I think the game NEEDS some form of trading/bartering system, similar to D2 minus all the item duping, I'm hoping the Bind to Account is just a temporary thing until they can create a viable trading system and form of Player vs Player. What this means is that every new season new gear will be introduced, so always fresh content. Cant wait to see what blizzard does with this title in the future. + Loot seems a bit better, more varied (hell im not sure this should be added to pros, this is core aspect of the game so it had to be improved in expansion) + Quest modes, bonus act and a bit more things to do (again im not sure this is really pros, same reason) So we got 8/10 now.

So we got 8/10 now. But...
    Cons:
    - Story - its just awful. Just like the Diablo 3 story which i didnt mentioned in my D3 review. Who wrote this crap - this was supposed to be a joke right?
    - No auction house - DAAAMN if something is broken - fix it, dont remove it! Gameplay was broken at day 1 so maybe You should remove it to? - 1 point
    - Cant trade items with friends - 0,5 point
    - Expansion which improves game in some aspects, making it bad in others and being overpriced? We should get this all without moving AH at launch of D3. - 1 point
    - still no decent PVP - 1 point
    - time for biggest downside: game is SHALLOW. Run through some random dungeon (no matter if its rift or some act in story mode). Get some random loot, and beat hundreds of mobs. Its mindless fun but when Youll turn off the game...Youll completly forget about who You killed and how You did it. Sure You get better items and do stuff a lot faster. So what? There's no feeling of great adventure. No cool story to reveal at the end of the day. AND FINALLY!!! THE GAME DOESNT REQUIRE ANY SKILL FROM THE PLAYER. You must just waste lots of time to get better items. THATS ALL THERE IS TO IT. You arent any better at this game than the player whos just instaling this. I know in h&s skill never was that important, but You learned the system and could make some mistakes adding atributes/choosing skills. This game is just idiotproof and as noob friendly as it could possibly be. I loved the feeling from games like quake, when after playing couple hundreds of hours in multiplayer i just wasted noobs. I was like armageddon for them when i joined games online.

Overall - this game gets solid 5/10 from me. It really is quite fun. But its as good as Cola is. When You drink it, it seems perfectly fine but give Your body nothing but empty callories and get You one step closer to grave. But ill probably drink some cola in the future, just like waste some time on this stupid game. But who knows? Maybe ill get smarter...

The first expansion to diablo 3 really brings some features people longed for. Especially the seasons, the constantly added new legendary items and affixes, the newly developed crafting and upgrade system and the overall constant updates really show that Blizzard tries its best to improve this game more and more. An improvement to the already good vanilla diablo 3.

Together with Torchlight 2 and Titan Quest one of the best ARPG I'm aware of. The single player always on DRM sucks. The game is a lot of fun as long as you haven't finished the campaign. The modes afterwards only last for a limited amount of time. New content would be welcome.

Games like Path of Exile require a master’s degree to properly gear your character and a doctorates to create your own build and properly diagnose weaknesses. Diablo 3 requires no such dedication to enjoy or understand. It is simply FUN with a capital F. It plays and feels incredibly smooth on PC and transitions well to a controller.
Some ARPG’s have become too dense and complex for this aging man over time, but Diablo 3, despite it’s simplicity, is a game I will return to time and time again.

But the game is about loot, and they finally seem to be getting the hang of it.

Game is less about stacking trifecta now and more about combing key pieces in interesting ways, (and various new affixes) which in some ways circumvents the loot wall, since finding a piece leads to you completely changing your gear around it, which means you need to find pieces to support that. It can get pretty complex when you find yourself weighing the benefits of multiple pieces of gear. If only I could wear 26 pieces! My favorite item I've found are some bracers that restore my resource every time I pick up a health globe. Kind of game breaking, but in a good way.

If you played the original, hated Inferno, hated the drop rates, and hated how dull the items were, it's probably worth checking out. I think you'll enjoy yourself. If your stance is "Blizzard North Skill pointz 8 player games" then still probably not for you.

You wouldn't farm for your own character you would farm for everyone else's character and then try to buy something. Reaper of souls fixes this by removing the auction house entirely and replacing it with 'loot 2.0' a system that understands what skill set your character is interested in and forces most of the loot to follow those constraints.

    2) Adds an adventure mode where you don't have to interact with the forced an unnaturally delivered story.

    3) The new portion of the story line is much better delivered than the older portions, to the extent that *gasp* you can miss some content if you don't talk to people - this is a good thing as the original game shoved your face into everything rather than let you discover anything.

So I am happy with reaper of souls, largely because it takes an eraser to the lousier pieces of the original game.

A big step in the right direction for the game. After a dissappointing initial launch the series became crippled with poor reception due to a game that was perceived as being fundamentally broken, and in many cases this was a fair criticism.

The AH is now gone, and with this most gear has become bound to your character, only tradeable between party members, but at the same time, we've seen a huge re-vamp of how a player finds rewards. Simply put, finding your own gear finally works now, getting back to the essence of the genre.

The Mystic adds some much needed wiggle room to play with unwanted stats, gems have been upgraded, and the Blacksmith abounds with new patterns, many of them legendary, for players to try their hand at crafting.

The new Crusader class fills the void of a mid-range caster/battlemage archetype based around the traditional "Holy Warrior" trope. Personality wise the Crusader falls short, but fans of the overall archetype will probably enjoy playing one. It's a solid class, no doubts.

Other classes have received a new skill, complete with new runes for it, and an extra passive slot along with new passives. Not bad, especially those skills belonging to the Demon Hunter and Wizard. The classic classes have also been tweaked numbers wise in many ways. Your mileage may vary.

The Paragon system has been re-worked to a fantastic effect and is now account wide, allowing the player to allocate special points as they level up to certain stats like Movement Speed, Crit Chance, Attack Speed, Armor, etc. It's very cool, especially once you rack up enough Paragon levels to see significant results from your stat choices.

Act V is the best act in the game without a doubt. It's still not high literature or anything, but it's a cut above the rest, and you can see that they took a lot of time and effort to create it. It's very cool and immersive. They held nothing back for it. Lore nerds celebrate, there are many tomes to be listened to!

The Adventure Mode with the Bounties and Nephalem Rifts is fantastic and finally makes farming something players can do freely without being tethered to a story. Want to clear Keeps then port to Act 1 to clear Hollow? No problem. Want to do some mini-quests along the way? No problem. Want to open some Neph Rifts and just kill hordes of monsters in a huge dungeon, culminating in a boss like the Butcher, Cydaea, or Rakanoth? No problem. With the addition of the clans and communities feature, finding friends to do these things with has never been easier as well.

Overall the expansion is solid, thought not revolutionary. What is most important is that Reaper fixes the core game, and sets it back on track. With ladders in the future, and whispers of a potential 3rd expansion, I think it's safe to say that Diablo 3 is well on its way to recovery and a re-gaining of respect.

Definitely pick up Reaper of Souls if grinding your face off against hordes of demons sounds like your thing. It's worth the money.

I played Diablo II thousands of hours. I played Median XL Hardcore up to the point I was bored loosing 200h+ character and starting again at Act 1 with the possibility to die level 10 in the first quest...

In what is Diablo 3 so sub-par? I don't see in any of those red dots providing any real reason.

Let's think about it for a second...

You cannot attribute skill points: SO WHAT? You play a Mage in D2? You put everything in Vitality and Mana and that's it. You save some points in case of a looted item requires some strenght or dexterity. Ok... Is that mineblowing experience? NO IT'S NOT, IT'S JUST USELESS.C'mon... Let's stop joking. It was just boring... Miserable argument.

"Naaah Diablo 3 suxxxx, You only have 6 skills + 3 passive while in Diablo 2 you had so many (from F1 to F12)". You NOOBS!!!! In Diablo 2, you had 120 skill points (a bit more with the quests). If you put points here and there, you die. You had to put all the points in, guess how many skills since you can put maximum 20 points in one skill?? 6 Skills!!! Oh my God!!!!! It is less than Diablo 3... So again a miserable argument... And actually Diablo 3 skill system is much better. According to your loot you will change your skills and you actually REALLY use your 6 active skills, which is far more than Diablo 2 where you used maybe 2 or 3 active skills, the rest being passive.

What more???? "ho it's not challenging". Ok, vanilla D3 wasn't at all. Got a point. However since the 2.2 patch it is challenging. As a Hardcore player, it really is... As in Diablo 2 Median XL, make a single mistake, you're just dead. It is as challenging as Diablo 2 Median XL, the challenge just comes a couple of 10 hours later.

"Yeah yeah, you can choose your difficulty", but in Nephalem Rifts you cannot... And the whole point in the game is that one. Nephalem rifts, getting harder and harder, as in Diablo 2.

"Diablo 3 is just like farming over and over". C'moooon BULL***T!!!!! Diablo 2 it was the same. With all of my friends we did hours of farming since Median XL is extremely difficult... I remember farming the Sewers in Act 2 (in Normal difficulty already...) for hours: even less rewarding than Nephalem Rifts.

The game however is not perfect. You can play max at 4 which is really something they could avoid. You cannot trade objects, even if playing a private game. However it still makes sense, since D3 can be very challenging the affixes of the items are made so that it fits with your class. No reason to trade then. In the end, yes, you play the way Blizzard wants you to play. But I'm fine with it.

I love opening the game when I have 20m free, opening a rift, empty it with the same adrenaline rush I had in Median XL. Kill the boss, feel relaxed, looking at the loot, optimize, shut down my computer. In this, Diablo 3 is just perfect. It reallt fitts my needs.

Yes hardcore players play 2000h+ do rifts level 50+, but there really is place for casual gamers as I am now, as I just mentionned, you can play for 20m and go. Which something you couldn't do in Diablo 2. You start playing Diablo2, you need to play hours.

The BIGGEST problem - itemization. Granted, it took Diablo 2 years to become truly awesome in this respect. But, this is a sequel. You already supposedly learned these lessons. Unfortunately, they brought the game down to the least common denominator and it is just a killer in the itemization area.

I played ~40 hours of the original D3, and I must say that I was interested in seeing where Blizzard chose to take the game in Reaper of Souls (RoS), and overall while there are some positive changes which have been made they really haven't done enough to give D3 the classic status which its predecessors now enjoy. Onto my main points about the game:

The main changes which were made from standard D3 were increasing the max level cap, adding a new class, adding a new act, changing the way items drop, and adding a new "adventure" game mode. I personally have had some issues with finding others to play with in the game's story mode and at lower levels, making the game a bit lonely compared to what I am used to in vanilla D3.

Increasing the max level cap had the effect of making all of a characters items from pre RoS obsolete, making all previous items obsolete once you hit level cap; this feels annoying in particular if you got badass items from the auction house, but after playing for a while you do get over it (well I did at least). Hand in hand with this is the changes to the drop rates, which have made finding upgrades for your character much easier, as items which drop are much more likely to be usable for which character you are playing. There is also a major increase to the drop rate of unique items, meaning that you will actually see some drop on a regular basis, and the addition of the mystic's ability to customize an enchantment on an item is also very welcome.

For me the biggest change is adventure mode and the increase to the number of events in the game world, which gives you a real incentive to travel throughout the game world and do the many of the most fun activities which the game has to offer. This stands as a vastly superior endgame to vanilla D3's grind act 3 for loot, and for me is the largest improvement on the original. One gripe I have is the enemy density, which appears to have been reduced from the changes made in previous patches.

The plot for the new act V is of the standard which you would expect from the original D3 (so not terrible but nothing to write home about), and the game has exactly zero surprises for you in terms of the larger story, and really has no success in making you give a damn about the events which are taking place in the world. There are some sidequests at the start of act V which have you actually interacting with civilians and guards outside of town, which is a welcome change from the standard of monsters out of town, everyone else in town, but (aside from one notable exception) they have no bearing on any other part of the game. There is also a bit more back story for all of your followers, which gives them some much needed depth.

Overall RoS is an improvement on the original D3, though there are still fundamental problems with the game which will reduce the game's re-playability (for me at least) in the longer term.

Cons - .Price for an expansion is quite steep

.Character depth - I just feel so much more can be done with the characters. Starting from the voice overs...especially the main character.

    Pros -
.Visuals are very well done. Read reviews of people criticizing this area. wtf are you serious? These visuals are absolutely spot on and couldn't be better. Looks gorgeous and really pulls you into the world and lore.

.Sound (score). Amazing and one of the best score's I've ever experienced in gaming. It really sets the mood quite well. Dramatic, moody, thrilling and exciting. Also the detail in the backdrop sound of fire/screaming/demons/chaos is perfect! Only downfall is the Voice overs could be better done. The main character's voice and overall cockiness annoys me.

.Control - What you'd expect from blizzard....easy, fluent and functional. Man this game's controls run so smooooth!

.Loot 2.0 - "not an improvement" Are you serious?! This is a major improvement! 80%+ of the loot I'm getting is relevant to my class! Awesome!

. Auction house gone - Best decision they've made. Many would agree

Overall I rate this experience an 8/10. Definitely a step-up from the base game with a lot to offer veterans and new comers. They've really done a great job with the atmosphere, scenery and sound/score. I just wish the character depth was there. I'm a lover of games such as dragon age, the witcher etc so I'm always looking for in depth character utilization accompanied by a well told and exciting story. For me, Diablo lacks here. Fortunately, the visuals and sounding still captivate me and draw me into the world.

Is it fun? yes. Is it visuallly brilliant? yes. Do the controls work? yes.
A must have for those who gave the base game anything between a 5-10

Fixes everything that was wrong with vanilla Diablo. Adds a functional end-game, and brings lasting content that is also immediately accessible. Unfortunately, it's a little too late for me, since I've moved on to Path of Exile. Vanilla Diablo 3 i'd give a 5/10. Diablo 3 with this expansion is a solid 8/10.

MUCH better than vanilla D3. Act 5 has better areas, the story is ok and there's much more to do after you finish the story. Skills and stat points are still a mess, but I don't think we'll ever see that fixed in D3.

Reaper of Souls is however much more polished and overall feels a bit better to play. The money they put into developing the game has to show somewhere.

Talking about money, the addon was also way too expensive at launch (40$), but now that it's down by 50% it's a good buy. Blizzard are still greedy **** but at least they improved the game, even though the ideas weren't their own.

I will try to offer a bit "neutral" review.

Objectively speaking Diablo 3 launch was horrible event, if you managed to log in, then you probably sooner or later crashed, or you enjoyed lags and disconnects. Then very soon you realized you need to "play the AH". Which meant you spent more going through auction house, than actually playing. It was for some good source of temporary income.

Then very soon you realized you need to "play the AH". Which meant you spent more going through auction house, than actually playing. It was for some good source of temporary income. And that destroyed game. Fast.

Game itself wasnt exactly great, but bad either. Just very far from Diablo 2. Frankly Diablo 3 isnt "Diablo" game. Its just hack'n'slash in similar world with similar theme as Diablo games before. And thats pretty much it. Even tho its hard to deal with it, simply dont take Diablo 3 as true "Diablo" game and you will be much happier with it.

Apart from major flaw which was Real Money Auction House (RMAH), then there was a random loot. Which was exactly as it says, random. That resulted in you almost never finding what you need and going to auction house to pray and be able to sell what you found so you could buy what you wanted/needed.

Completely random drops were made cause they wanted RMAH profit (so they could profit on it, obviously). Well that is past.

All this isnt past cause of Reaper of Souls, but due patch 2.0.1. They announced end of Auction Houses some time before that, so it was out-of-game already. That patch was important cause it introduced "smart loot", which means that instead of completely random gear you get mostly gear that is for your character. Sometimes I think its bit "too smart", but certainly much better than before.

Since start of D3 most classes went thru pretty heavy redesign of skills and tweaking. After patch 2.0.1 game was very playable and suprisingly even enjoyable.

    Reaper of Souls

It added one act, which if you just dont fly around content is rather big, with lots of side-line events. Plus it is even visually very nicely crafted (one wishes they re-made old content to match Act V). Some places look rather amazing. Plus its kinda "darker out there".

It also added one class to play, Crusader mace wielding tank-like holy warrior. Its quite fun to play, but I think it needs a lot of tweaking (similar to what other characters received during patches), plus even some bug fixes. But, if they continue doing as good work as they did with patch 2.0.1, then Im not worrying about class future. Just right now its pretty unbalanced class.

Apart from that every class recieved some active skill and passive ones. Which in some cases can change how you play your class. Most of them is at least interesting, tho not mandatory to use. Also you can now use 4 passives at level 70. Level cap was increased too.

Then there is new loot, there are some new legendaries, some old legendaries re-designed or at least scaled up to higher level content. Some legendaries scale with you, so you can find legendary amulet at lvl 61 and same one with higher numbers at lvl 67. Some are lvl 70 only and some are Torment difficulty only. Difficulty was already changed and tweaked in patch 2.0.1 before RoS.

If I have some "issues" with loot, its that all your old crafting materials are pretty much useless and same goes to your equip. There is quite big gap between level 60 and level 61+ equipment, unless you were already clothed in best legendaries of level 60 before RoS.

So, you need to get new mats, mostly by taking apart gear you find and part by finding those materials. One of them is really important "Death's Breath". Problem with it is that its needed for almost everything and it really drops very rarely. I would say that given right now I play game at Torment 1, it drops really miserably. Apparently it scales with Torment difficulties, which at higher numbers are truly "torment".

They also added new "crafting", which is pretty much what World of Warcraft players already know. Transmogrification and "enchanting" via "Mystic" character. Enchanting is simply random re-roll of one selected stat on anything. It also costs arm and leg. And its not very rewarding, but good at breaking your bank. Transmog is cheap and purely cosmetic option, which simply takes look of one item and for a price it gives it to your item (must be same kind of item tho).

Then there is rather good adventure mode, where you can play freely (between acts with all waypoints activated) or you can make "bounties" which consist of killing bosses, mobs and when you get 5 of them, you are rewarded with "Horadric cache" with random loot. Also you are rewarded in progress with Blood shards which you can spend on some item gambling.

Plus during hunting for bounties, you get keys to Nephalem Rifts, which is pretty much random dungeon consisting of few levels and there you kill enemies till boss spawns.

    And thats pretty much it.

To sum it up, they added a LOT of content, good measure of fun and made Diablo 3 bit more like "true" Diablo. Its not perfect, but they "fixed it". So its fun, if you like such games.

The new formulas introduced into RoS as well as a little earlier prior to release have fixed or in some way addressed most of the problems that vanilla Diablo 3 absolutely failed at and it all started with the announcement that the AH was finally being removed. Without the game being centred around the AH, loot progression in the game is pretty solid right now. Loot 2.0 gives you upgrades almost every 2 hours even after hitting the upper "soft" cap that most ARPGs have in terms of itemization, this makes farming worthwhile again! Since legendaries are account bound now there is no bot based spamming going on and even though most people dislike this feature it helps protect against the abuse that most trading systems get put through in any game that requires an online connection and there is no reason for most accounts to ever get hacked. Crafting is as addictive as ever and being able to reroll stats on items using the mystic is a great and fun addition. Monster killing is as fluid as ever and paragon stat points and the constant stream of small iterative upgrades doesnt get old anytime soon. Adventure mode allows you to continue hacking away endlessly through different acts without having to go through the shallow story parts.
Character customization is still extremely lacking in the game with the same 6 - 7 skill /rune system, the skill system still doesnt allow for qwerky and fun skill builds like in D2 and doesnt require too much thought on different playstyles. Paragon stat points do however add a small layer/buffer on this problem but dont allow for too much variance.
The Crusader class is again another solid addition and feels just like it should, an uber tanky Paladin (d2) like class that smashes through things in a lot of fun ways =).
All in all RoS is not a disappointment, the price tag is still a little high but the game is worth it with all the new fixes/enhancements and will keep most old and new diablo fans busy for a good 100 - 200 hours (if you enjoy grinding loot and making your characters iteratively better), and this is coming from someone who absolutely hated every bit of what they did with Diablo 3 vanilla having played and loved Diablo 2 for so many years.
If its a well built story and a long campaign you want absolutely stay away from this expansion. If you enjoy killing **** and slash/and a good itemization system, then definitely do consider giving RoS a shot.

I never wanted to grind for gold to buy items I needed to progress. The Loot 2.0 system is light years better than loot drops were at launch.
I haven't yet finished the expansion, but it has quite a fun feel to it, with many more side diversions than the original. The story line isn't anything groundbreaking, but the art, animation and voice acting are all top notch, as we've come to expect.
All in all, if you hated the original D3, this may not change your mind, but I suggest at least logging in to check out how much things have changed. You might be surprised how much better it is.

I think, as an addon, Reaper of Souls is pretty good, but the actual game is bad enough to negate its effect.

I wish this expansion was the game at release. Everything about the 5th Act smacks of a dedicated attempt to internalize customer criticism and fan complaints. Better characterization, better combat, better loot, an enhanced community and more feedback. It's not a perfect game, but it is heads and tails better than D3 was at release. The crusader is a great addition to the hero lineup as well.

ROS improved Diablo 3 by around 100 times (In my opinion) because before the release of ROS, I had only played the game for about 30 hours in total AND the idea of going through the less than sufficient storyline an infinite number of times felt like a total and utter waste of time. With the new implementation of the Adventure mode and the implementation of the new loot system that game just seemed so much... better! Now I actually have a chance to get all of the legendaries and sets rather than a chance to simply get one throughout my whole playtime :/...

The TWO things that I don't like about this expansion are the fact that:
    1) It's way too expensive for the things it implements, however game changing those implementations are.
    2) There are no where near enough class-specific sets or legendaries that influence the player into changing up their build, although the ones that ARE present at least make an attempt.

I have been playing Diablo 3 with the new ROS expansion non-stop since release and Act V, I admit is definitely the best act thus far, however short it may be.

Overall fantastic expansion but too expensive and not enough class-specific legendaries/sets.

Reaper of Souls is more than an expansion, it's a complete game overhaul. Virtually no aspect of the game has been left untouched and it shows when playing it, because it's absolutely fantastic. Anyone who says this is a mere DLC or "cash grab" is a fool, and probably doesn't understand the severity of some of the changes, and how they impact the game overall.

The launch of Reaper of Souls was the smoothest I've seen in a very long time, absolutely no issues and I seamlessly transitioned into act 5 without even needing to relog. Speaking of act 5 it is by far the best act in the game, it is so beautiful and well designed I was actually in shock while playing through it.

If you like loot (who doesn't?) Reaper of Souls is for, playing the game has never been more rewarding. With the removal of the auction house and the inclusion of BoA (Bind on Account) items you must now find all your gear yourself, no more pay to win and let me tell you, there's nothing more satisfying than actually finding that end game item you've been longing for. The new "smart loot" system helps with this, basically any item that drops has a very high chance at being a smart drop, which means the stats are tailored to the class you're currently playing. This system really helps smooth out gear progression. The new artisan the "Mystic" plays a massive role in the gearing process as well, as she allows you to change one stat on an item for a more preferable one (e.g. Life per hit to Critical Hit Damage).

Reaper of Souls changes the way you farm, previously you would farm the same route over, and over again which was frankly, boring. This is no longer the case with the inclusion of "Adventure mode". Adventure mode offers "Bounties" and "Rifts", Bounties are like mini quests, there are 5 per act and if you complete all 5 you are rewarded with a "Horadric Cache", these caches (also known as bounty bags) contain gems, powerful legendaries and Rift fragments, which are used to open Rifts, Rifts are fully randomized dungeons with up to 10 floors. You have a progress bar which you must fill to 100% by killing monsters, when you do so a Rift Guardian will spawn, this powerful boss will drop legendary crafting materials, as well as "Blood Shards" which are used to gamble for specific item types, this gambling NPC is another new feature of Reaper of Souls.

Another main selling point of the expansion is the new class, the Crusader. I have personally put around 200 hours into the Crusader since release and I can honestly say it's a very enjoyable class, while not perfect (resource cost and mobility issues) he is very fun to play. As well as adding a new class Blizzard have also updated all the older classes with new spells, runes and passives.

I could go on forever about what has changed with Reaper of Souls, but all you need to know is Diablo III is now a great game, if you haven't played it in months, even years I highly suggest you re-install the game and update to the latest patch and give it a try, a lot of the improvements Reaper of Souls brings are available without purchase (just none of the major selling points). If you enjoy the game without Reaper of Souls, you will absolutely love it with. If you're a fan of the aRPG genre you can't go wrong with Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, it's the pick of the litter.

RoS adds Act 5 to the campaign and a new class, the Crusader. Act 5 is not very long, but feels dragged out because the size of the areas are massive. But these areas are filled with lots of extra events and the boss encounters are well designed. The Crusader is very fun to play and fans that missed the Paladin from D2 will be happy.

RoS also adds a new game mode called Adventure mode, in this mode all acts are accessible and you can freely travel between them while doing random quests called bounties for loot and blood shards. Blood shards allow you to gamble on items from a new vendor for chances at legendaries. In this mode you can also open up randomized gauntlet type areas with a big boss at the end called Rifts which give you extra chances at loot and more blood shards.

A new crafter, the Enchanter is also part of RoS. This new crafter allows you to change one mod on an item for a cost (depending on the item rarity and type, the cost can be very significant). But it allows you to salvage some items that would be a minor or zero upgrade and turn them into a major boost. This enchanter also allows you to change the appearance of your gear (similar to World of Warcraft's transmog feature), your characters will no longer look like mismatched clowns.

Blizzard has promised more features like Ladder play are still coming, along with tweaks to adventure mode so things should improve even more in the future.

But while Diablo 3 is actually fun now it's still an aRPG designed for a very casual audience, and RoS hasn't changed that. If you want deep character development you'll still need to look elsewhere, like Path of Exile.

Restricting trade to NOTHING was actually an idea I wanted to embrace, but combined with terribly low drop rates for decent items, frustrating gated gameplay and a mystic that servers more as less as random cash hoarding slot machine, has made the whole experience distasteful. Classes are now balanced around gear and not having said gear makes certain aspects of the classes completely unrewarding, especially the Crusader whom I spent over 200 hours with. Sadly Vanilla despite problems was actually closer to Diablo in my eyes. I don't mind a fresh new idea but it has to work and embrace the series. This simply doesn't and I'm curious if most people leaving high reviews have changed their minds. While official forums should be taken with a grain of salt, it seems a lot of the responses to and from "Blue" commentary reminds us that this game still needs work.

I played it for a couple hundred hours so it was well worth the money, but it was not the 'every day' game I hoped for. Maybe in the future patches will sort it out, but at the core the game is still flawed as ever.

All in all, the game still has room to grow, but this expansion is a large step in the right direction. Here's hoping Blizzard continues to tweak and patch until the systems are as interesting and polished as the later patches of Diablo 2.

I've played through RoS on my wizard, and though I rated D3 quite low, this *is* an improvement. (I'd like to do 6.5, but to be generous, I'll go with 7)

First, the removal of the real money auction house was great - that was a painful, awful, insulting, greedy, disastrous system, & the #1 reason I quit D3, & remember it without affection. (I had reached - whatever the final level was, & completely lost interest, since it was P2W in the extreme.) On the other hand, the inability to trade with friends & party members now is disappointing, and a *sane* auction house system might be welcome, albeit possibly too open to exploitation. On the basis of auction house removal alone, I have to give it a substantially higher score.

The story/area is a little better than D3. Not a lot. A little. I played the wizard most, but also got a crusader to max, & found it strangely ill-suited to the game design. (WHY make it slower? What's the point? - I realize that's been removed, but when I was leveling mine, it was a real pain.) By the time the crusader class had been buffed up, I was too sick of her to bother. I liked the voice actors for both male & female - that was a plus.

I found the nerfs/buffs a little - annoying. I was disappointed, again, that the classes most suited to moving, to kiting, such as wizard & DH, seem to be rewarded for standing still & shooting. I find that boring, and too dependent on gear. I'm sick of gear being #1 in Blizzard games, as well as an almost mandatory cookie cutter build. (I see that critics seem to love their games, but I'm not feeling it. "Simple & utterly gear dependent is just not working for me, & I'm a pretty casual gamer.)

Rifts - a good idea, intensely boring to repeat. WAY too long, & your reward/boss comes too soon, in that there's not a lot of reason to continue with them, though legendaries are supposed to drop more often in Rifts. (I averaged maybe one worthless legendary an hour.) There should have been a major boss per level, or make Rifts shorter. I got more legendaries from blasting urns & crates than from bosses, which is a big problem for me. A boss *should* give more than an urn, but you are not rewarded for tackling harder fights. Just - from playing a lot, & that's a reason not to open D3.

Enchanting was a nice touch, if it worked reasonably well. I realize they changed the option that allowed for, "Would you like vitality for your vitality, or perhaps... vitality?" But several times, I got lovely rare items that had terrible stats.(that couldn't be altered by enchanting) Obviously, you're supposed to play this game for a lot more hours than I'm willing to endure. I'm not helped enough by going up in Torment (I was generally comfortable at 3 & 4 on the wizard, and had a few *mixed* set pieces, with the rest legendary.) (I was about 250 Paragon Level - I ran it more than I should have, though I saw players saying you had to have 'at least' 300 hours to expect set gear. That's crazy, & no thanks.) I was deeply annoyed, also, that the set pieces aim you at one build. I despise the 'changed look' effects - Archon, the Akarat's champion thing on the crusader - and I had no intention of building that way just because a set told me I had to. Not at all flexible enough!

Gems were stupidly expensive to make, remove (that has been lowered a bit) and generally not something rewarding. It's an attempt to make you play eternally, & I don't find them exciting enough to do that. (I had max level gems on my wizard - there's no way I'd bother with that on another character)

That brings me to Kadala - whose idea was it to make a snarky NPC who insults you as she gives you lousy, utterly useless gear? She gives you about what you'd get from 2 bosses. Just - no.

My score is probably higher than I'm feeling about D3:RoS now, but it is a jump up from plain D3, & unlike most games now, allows me to play with friends. (I wasn't interested in public games) I'm sick of mmos, & single player rpgs have a very limited play time. So that's - something.

A much needed improvement to Diablo III. The soundtrack/score & art style RoS uses really transports you into the world. The bounties and Nephalem rifts add much needed variety to D3.

I would give this expansion a 9 but:
    1. This expansion isn't worth $40 (Maybe $25-$30)
    2. Kadala (Blood Shard Vendor) Legendary Drop rates need to be fixed
    3. The story has no real substance

The bounty and rift systems and adventure mode as a whole are what D3 needed all along. The bad...Rifts are far and away most efficient/best way to farm itemsupgrades and are honestly, not a lot of fun. They are completely random and while some are ok, many others are just an absolute pain...you get to where you enter the rift and just roll your eyes when you see the layout/mob density or lack there of. Bounties are my favorite, but are unfortunately at the moment, best and most effeiciently farmed on the easiest difficulty level, which is not a lot of fun. There is really just an overall lack of rewarding things to do, its basically rifts one after another after another or easy mode bounty runs.
The Ugly.....Blackthornes...anyone whose played will know what I mean by this. No trading, 9/10 "legendaries" you get will be absolute junk. Drop rates would be fine if trading was allowed, but being that game is BOA and all self found, it needs a bump ina bad way. Clans are basically pointless. Communities are about the same. There is essentially no reason to ever interact socially with anyone in this game. And theres the coup de gras.....the new PS4 version will have trading, gifts to send, nemesis mode, basically all tyhe things the PC fans have been asking for, and they(pc gamers) are now getting a huge FU from Blizz for doing nothing more then being the first ones to buy and support D3:RoS.

Is it the game D3 should have been in the beginning? Probably not, but it's certainly much closer than it was before.

The new expansion for Diabo 3, Reaper of Souls, improves the gameplay of the original game in many ways. Gone are the days of having to suffer through the same Act facing the same baddies; the introduction of Adventure Mode adds more replayability to the game by varying the play through bounties. Bounties are specific missions that the game offers to you, and upon completion you are rewarded with rift keys. Find 5 rift keys and you may enter a rift, a fancy way of saying randomized dungeon with enemy combinations not seen in the regular game. A very good enhancement to the game as a whole and does improve the lasting appeal of the game.
Loot 2.0 is exponentially better than it's predecessor. Blizzard seems to have taken the "less is more" approach to loot, as now enemies drop less loot, but the quality is far better. My level 60 Monk was finding magic and rare items of equal or better value to my Legendaries from the original Diablo 3, and the same can be said for my barbarian character and wizard. Also, utilizing the "smart drop" system they have implemented, Blizzard has ensured that a legendary drop will peak your interest, as the chances of not only one dropping but one dropping that caters towards the character you are playing as has dramatically increased incentive to play. And the new mystic NPC allow for enchanting an item, effectively changing one of it's stats in the hopes of getting a better one; as well as one of my new favorite, yet very simple features, Transmogrification, which is a difficult way of saying "changing how you're stuff looks." Even though it's a simple concept, I love the idea of being able to change the aesthetic of my character.

The campaign part of the expansion does feel like more of a DLC addition than a true expansion; it's short (about 4-5 hours long depending on the difficulty), but that's not to say it isn't enjoyable. As someone who really likes the lore of the Diablo universe, there is a treasure trove of history and lore here that I truly enjoyed discovering. The art direction is great, dark tones contrast the lighter blue of the allies of death. It is indeed a good looking, polished graphical expansion.

Even though this review may paint a rosy picture of ROS, the truth is that I don't believe D3 will ever be as good as I feel D2 was. The removal of a point based skill system, and the subsequent implementation of the rune system D3 uses, seems to be nothing more than an illusion to hide the lack of depth in the game. I can oftentimes swap runes on my skills on the fly, with no repercussion or positive differences noticeable on my character. In terms of gaming, there is a very shallow "build" pool for characters, and ROS only seems to alleviate this matter slightly. Now, with the revamped Paragon system, I could see how in the future, after massive amounts of time have been sunk into the game, one could create a truly unique character, but for the majority of players the depth of a true RPG just isn't there. Blizzard took away the consequence/reward of character choices, and in turn took away the complexity and uniqueness of the D3 characters. It is obvious that with ROS they are hoping to reverse the affects of this decision to a certain extent, but for now their changes to the game with ROS are a small fish in a big pond: too small to make a true dent.

Bottom line: I find myself drawn back to D3 after many, many months of not playing, enjoying the expansion overall. But I can't imagine it holding my attention for more than a month, tops. While it is a vast improvement to D3 pre expansion, it is still nowhere near the echelon of quality we have come to expect from Blizzard. It's fun, but for how long?

Gameplay: Fun, solid, fluid, feels clean and looks good. Typical monster slayer game with lots of loot to go around. Improved a lot of aspects from diablo 3 and keeps people entertained. Improvements coming out relatively fast in the form of patches to make sure the game is what the people want. It lacks a lot of creativity though as builds for characters are pretty much cookie cutter. As in only certain builds are viable for endgame content. Also specific items are the best for certain classes. In other words if you want to have top level gear and top level damage you pretty much have to follow in the footsteps of everyone else which makes it kind of depressing.

Overall this game is crazy amounts better than diablo 3 but still needs improvement to be a game that is in the same league as diablo 2 and 1.

Yes the fifth chapter might not be as strong as the initial story ever was, but the adventure mode makes it a lot more fun to do!

It actually (finally) is rewarding to grind this game and there are numerous ways of getting better gear!
Crafting also has gained a little of it's glory back in this update.
The thing I do like most of this game is the difficulty of staying alive on the higher Inferno levels. One mistake and your dead, makes it feel a lot better when you accomplish killing an elite group, mini boss or boss!

In the end I do not recommend this game to people who love a great story.
For one playthrough (maybe two) it's alright, but after that the story is very thin.

However if you like mindless hack 'n slash and grinding for gear, this game is great!
The combat is great and has pretty deep skill combinations and strategies with gear/skills to do most damage and stay alive!

adventure mod is nice. rifts, bounties kanai's cube are new things. more playable after game finished. act 5 is interesting. it is likely diablo 2 and this is good and harder than other acts. new items are more balanced but still no pvp in game and doing same things boring. scenario of act 5 terrible like others. and playable/price is low

Hello, first of all I would like to say that I was a huge Diablo 2 fan when it came out, so my review is somewhat based on comparing it to Diablo 3 ROS.

I did play Diablo 3 when it first came out and beat the game in less than a week and forgot about it - to be honest I was pretty disappointed and found it wasn't quite to my liking.

I decided to buy ROS just around the time they released patch 2.4 (I believe) which is Season 5. I could tell upon playing the game again, that they had made a lot of changes to the game and a lot of improvements to when Diablo 3 first came out. The progression feels a lot smoother, (though a little too easy), the gear management, customizing and upgrading systems makes things interesting, and the spells and different character builds are fun to play around with. What is interesting is there are gear incentives to switch builds as well.

As a stand alone game (and not comparing it or basing it off of the original Diablo games) it is an entertaining game and I definitely feel like I got my money's worth for around $20 for the expansion pack. The new seasons that come out every 3 months or so give incentives and new content such as gear, and dungeons which, for me, made the end game enjoyable. However the problem I ran into was that after I finished the basic incentive tasks for the season I shied away from the game altogether. It just seems like after a certain point you are grinding into oblivion (which some people may enjoy), constantly upgrading and improving gear, but since playing through the campaign and adventure mode is stimulating you with new content, the end game, to me, seems pointless.

Now, I would like to end by comparing it with the previous Diablo games, mainly Diablo 2.

    Story:
What was (more) interesting about Diablo 2, was for one thing the story was dark, grimy very oblique at times and highly stylized. Diablo 3 took the Diablo world and established it for an all encompassing audience, which is fair, but the Diablo 2 environment seemed to have horror elements that intrigued me more-so.

    Creatures/gameplay:
Though Diablo 2 ran on a different engine than the updated and smooth Diablo 3 engine, I found that whilst playing Diablo 2 I paid much more attention to the monsters, and the environments. I think part of this has to do with the difficulty (I'll get to this shortly) - you pay more attention to killing things that really ARE a threat to you. I read another thread about this, and some people speculating on the dimmer lighting in Diablo 2. However, there are some really cool environmental effects, and creatures/creature animations that are in Diablo 3.

    Difficulty:
The difficulty in Diablo 3 was a really big problem for me. For one thing there are at least 10 different difficulties to choose from. The difficulty incentive was confusing for me because you can easily exploit the game by playing minimum difficulty levels and slowly upping the difficulty so you are sort of 'one step ahead of the game', though if you are a speed running type there is a pretty even threshold of difficulty which can make the game worthwhile. Personally I did try to stay pretty high in difficulty to maintain a challenge, but I found the whole difficulty system to be "average".

In comparison to Diablo 2 where the difficulty seemed to always be a step above you (to Diablo 3's one step below you) so that you really had to work (with character and gear) to progress through just 3 basic difficulties. For some reason that made the grinding more worth it.

    Multiplayer:

I am not a fan of the new battle.net format, and I found this game too difficult to really bother with the multiplayer aspect. There are pre-made guild channels, and the whole multiplayer format is too 'other-worldly' for me. The old Battle.net (via Diablo 2 for example) kind of defaulted you into channels and guided you into the multiplayer aspect of the game - I found at least - whereas the new battle.net has it sort of the other way around. Plus the leveling system, which works as something called a paragon, which means once you max to level 70 you get +paragon levels which give you stats, and these paragon levels can range from 60-800 or something, so I feel the multiplayer is probably pretty coordinated around meeting specifications. Trading was also a big aspect of Diablo 2, not prevalent in Diablo 3.

However, all in all, Diablo 3 did improve upon what a lot of features in Diablo 2 were frustrating and lacking. The downside is that it dampened on the aspects of Diablo 2 which were dark, epic, and challenging. Unfortunately it feels like an entirely different game altogether, which to be honest I probably would not have played had it lacked the Diablo name. That being said, it is a well designed game, by a thoughtful and innovative gaming company that really did draw me in and was fun and entertaining for the time I was engaged in it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. All right expansion, mostly worth it for the extra character.

Diablo III – Reaper of Souls is an expansion for the main game and features a new map/area to go to, as well as a new campaign and an extra character, the Necromancer. It follows the exact same principle as Diablo II – Lord of Destruction.

I always found it funny that, in Diablo II and Diablo III, you slay Diablo, evil itself, the Prime overlord of hell and after that, the campaign goes on casually and you need to defeat the “true end boss” of the game because of the expansion. Nevertheless, both expansions worked out fine.

Diablo III – Reaper of Souls is worth it, mainly for the Necromancer character. Although the Necromancer feels very overpowered in the beginning, it gets balanced out with the other characters later in the game. His mechanics, attacks and skills are cool, and his animations and blueish glowing aura make the character complete.

In terms of the rest, the newly added campaign (or to be more specific; act) is all right. It has a classic and cliché story about a rogue angel Malthael, who turned into the Angel of Death. This of course, means that he raises the dead and wants to conquer the world (or wipe it out, whatever).

It is a fun little story with some new unique terrains and environments, some cool new enemies like the Rat men and the Boggits but also some cheap and recycled assets like “Revenant archers”, “Shield Barrers” and “Revenant Soldiers”. Those are recycled skeletons from the original game and feel lifeless (yeah, I know) and rushed and I didn’t get any satisfaction when wiping the floor with them. Mainly because there is nothing to wipe, because they just go up in smoke. The lore tries it best to put some life and connection into these new enemies, but for me, that failed miserably.

The boss battle with Malthael was good and rewarding tough and he was hard as bricks. This fight redeemed some fun I had with the game.

Overall, Diablo III – Reaper of Souls was not the worst expansion I have ever played, it was just not impressive of unique enough for me to care that much.

Reaper of souls is fun. Act V is a lot closer to the Diablo universe than all of Diablo 3 combined. Less chatter from bosses, more creepiness. The issue is this - intervals where you get no loot. When you hit the loot level (70), you should be rewarded for hunting for loot. As you colect items that increase your power, the time should increase between upgrades. Instead, you get to 70 and are stuck in lower difficulties forever because magic find no longer exists on common items. You cannot increase your odds for finding loot that allows you to progress through the difficulties. You will get a legendary ever 2-3 hours because there is a loot timer. It truly is loot on rails. The problem is far greater in hardcore.

That perfect item progression from previous Diablo games is still missing, but at least we have bounties and rifts...right? Ahem.

Oh, and cinematics? None. Where did Blizzard quality go?

This expansion is probably the best thing to happen to D3 in a long while. It fixed many issues in the game and it made it feel fun again. However, there are some key issues with it.

The rest comes from replaying as well as the new adventure mode which is basically just running around dungeons killing bosses for rewards. Same as story mode without having to worry about cut scenes and the like.

The expansion adds the new Crusader class to the list. Its a Strength based character that tends to lean more towards a tank than anything else. Its not terrible and the dialogue written for it is pretty entertaining. The other classes receive one new attack ability and a few passive ones. The level cap is up to 70 so it gives you something to work towards.

With the revamps to loot as well as enemies being based on player level as opposed to game difficulty it makes the dungeon crawl a lot easier. However, this expansion feels a bit puny and may deter the more "hardcore" players since getting the best loot is not terribly difficult anymore. Plus its still always online which probably won't go away for a long time (if ever).

So I've been reading a lot of positives about the Diablo 3 expansion, how it's fixed the game and I bought myself a collectors edition being a blizzard fan. I really enjoyed D2 LoD so I was hoping for something similar. However my honest opinion is Diablo 3 has been simplified too much and for me, doesn't provide the depth and excitement of Diablo 2.

    - The expansion is short, you can easily complete it in around 2 hours.
    - The story wasn't memorable or very exciting.
    - For a full priced Blizzard game I would have like a proper cinematic ending.
    - Lack of innovation, LoD had the new rune system making socketing items interesting and exciting. D3 just gave us more stats.
    - Lack of difficulty, I'm not played up to 70 on my hardcore character yet but even on the Master difficulty seemed quite boring and easy, I found myself falling asleep when I wasn't tired. Didn't really ever feel challenging or exciting, more of the same trash mobs from Diablo 3 and not enough fun with the boss fights. I used to love fighting to get to Ball or Diablo to get epic rewards, this simply isn't the case.
    - New Bounty system helps with some of the staleness from the original but gets old quick.
    - Itemization and drops are a lot better than vanilla.
    - Paragon levels simply aren't as good as trying to level up to 99 with experience loss / difficulty that D2 had.
    - Great graphics and some nifty events and an enjoyable but short act 5.

So I'll give this a 6, its good for a couple of nights however I cannot see myself playing it long term which is disappointing, every few years I return to play D2, but unfortunately I feel D3 is just too a too bland and generic experience.

Diablo 3 is a victim of its own predecessors. However, Diablo III failed immensely from its itemization to its environments.

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, in a sense, corrected some of Diablo III's issues, the environments are darker, the story fits more in the Diablo universe and while the itemization got better with various patches implementing legendary gems and ancient items, its still not enough to remove its biggest flaw, RNG.

There are too many RNG layers that it is not a guarantee for players to be able to obtain the items they need even after 500 hours of playtime, and this flaw was the biggest reason for me not to invest my time in it as much as I have back in previous Blizzard games.

    Here's an example:

If I wanted to acquire a certain legendary items from previous Diablo games, all I have to do is to farm a specific boss for it to drop, its gets repetitive and tedious, but atleast I know that if a legendary item did indeed drop, most of the time, its the item I really wanted in the first place. In Diablo III, they removed these boring boss run and made it possible for any monsters to drop any kind of legendary items, while this is great in theory, the legendary item pool is so vast, that the chances of obtaining the item you're looking for is far worse than it was in previous Diablo games. And thats only one RNG layer to consider, if your item does indeed drop, the kinds of stats as well as its quality, is still based on RNG, which is frustrating nonetheless.

Diablo III does get one thing right though, your character and their abilities looks and feels powerful. Monsters gets massacred and dismembered with no mercy, your characters will feel like a god. The problem is, after a long while, you will ask yourself, "What the point?"

The new adventure mode added more content into the game, by a massive margin. Nephalem rift's are fun, bounties are fun and farming is pretty fun since experience curve is very smooth. You got stronger little bit easier and new upgrade might drop from different sources.

But.....Where is the endgame? You get new items, get stronger...Only ones you can match your mettle is against monsters. Increasing difficulty means mobs will just trap you and unless you got resource to spam nukes you will die. It's simple as that. It's not challenging, it's luck based game mode.

It took 2 years to develop "Expansion" that does not solve the main problem in the game. END GAME. Adding a plank zone with couple of trees, rocks and a lot of free space. Then slap a town in one side that work's as safe heaven. Then make open lobbies, where you can set up own games under categories like "PVP/Adventure farm". Allow 8 people to join into pvp games.

Now you got end game, getting new upgrade means you can go find a top dog and beat the crap out of him. Collect hes ear in a special stash that can be seen by everyone inside the game. Then hes repair cost after each death will drop in the floor for you to collect.

Blizzard launched this expansion to delay from the fact that there is no end game. Essentially reseting the game for us, and now they will bring new content that will reset all work we have done....Ladder's that will add "more" into the game, and couple of good for nothing additions to the gameplay that will not add depth into anything.

When i started this review i gave score 7. When i think about Blizzard's strategy for this game (Buy the game, expansion when it's overpriced and then stop playing it after 1-2 weeks, cost effective i can say.) and how slowly they add content that should have been there in year 2012.

Diablo 2 had: Pvp, farm items, experience that needed to be grinded out, hardcore where people who weren't careful did die to other people and they learned from it. So in the next character they were ready. Also had much more fun crafting. Better inventory structure and public games.

Blizzard bought into Diablo 3 and Diablo 3 RoS next to nothing from past games, only silly story that revolves around massive number of cinematics between end boss. Also RoS added new thing called insane difficulty for last act bosses. My first character to hit 70 was hardcore Wizard. I almost died during exping in hard mode to the bosses since i was not prepared for them to slice most of my hp away. While all mobs, elite packs were piss easy.

There was nothing "overwhelming", no "wow", or "mind blown" to be found in this game.

Once we cleared the fifth act, leaned back and overlooked whats left to do the illusion was falling apart pretty quick and the addon became very negligible. Took us maybe like 10 hours to finish act 5. At this point we kept on farming for some more hours, done some "rift" runs, finished tal rashas set.

But it became obvious that there are no real new experiences waiting, no interresting experimenting, no interresting challenges. Basic elements of the game, like skill tree or items, are just much too simplistic. Yes basically this addon could have been a huge content patch. It is just big enough to justify taking actual money for it.

Half the time we spent was maybe 8/10, the actual first playthrough in act 5 for example.
The runs that followed the first playthrough already been pretty boring and desperate runs trying to farm some legendaries and set items.

    Overall experience: 6/10.
There are much better games out there.

Blizzard did the obvious: literally transformed Diablo 3 to what it should have been from the start. It took them some time, but finally Blizzard got the message and moved finally to the right direction. While we expect the next expansion, fans of action / rpg can now sleep peacefully ... the king is here!
