This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Amazing sequel and one of the best RPG’s I have played.

Diablo II is the definition of the RPG genre and the grandfather of all the hack and slash games that followed. It got a solid story, excellent mechanics, great sound and music, good visuals and challenging enemies and bosses.

When comparing Diablo II to its predecessor, it is a huge upgrade. The mechanics have improved, the visuals are much nicer, the spells and skills are way better and there are many more classes and characters to play.

Diablo walks the earth again after a unnamed hero from the previous game slew him and tried to contain his dark essence in his body. It ultimately consumed and corrupted him and gave Diablo free passage to use him as a puppet and spread his evil, including his demon horde and freeing his brothers Mephisto and Baal.

Evil takes over the lands in an alarming pace and a lot of people are either dead or fleeing to small settlements. You start in a camp owned by the Rogue Sisters, an order of fighting women that lost almost all of their members. From here, you start your journey and fight against the Prime Evils.

In terms of graphics, Diablo II looks stunning. It is still 2D, but the art style and the different dimensions and depth the engine uses, make it feel like a fully 3D game. Animations, blood and environments look beautiful and the dark and grim atmosphere the graphics create is just perfect, especially for the open field areas.

Diablo II is split up into acts, each with their own questline, pieces of the story and environments. This is, by far, one of the best aspects of the game, the variety of play. One act you are in forests and plains, then you travel through the desert, then the jungle and lastly, Hell itself. It is just refreshing and stunning to enter a complete new environment every act.

The sound design in this game is one of the best I experienced so far. The blows of your weapon, the hit sounds on enemies, the grunts of Fallen that you kill, the perfect and lifeless sounds the zombies make, it is all perfect. To top it off, the music is excellent. There has yet to be an RPG that can match the atmospheric vibe that Diablo II created with its excellent soundtrack.

The mechanics are great. You got durability on your gear, different quality ratings that your weapons and armor can possess, and, best of all, the crafting system via the Horadric Cube to create more powerful gems, potions and other items. The combat feels more responsive and predictable instead of the one hit deaths that you could encounter in the first game.

The only thing that I needed to get used to, was the fact that you could not save the game without exiting and that the enemies did not stay dead. All the RPG’s that I played, including the first Diablo did save your progress and kills until that point, but as a kid, I was surprised when I saw that all the enemies were back when I started it up again. Nowadays, this is nothing special, but back then, it was a new concept in which you could harvest XP almost infinitely from enemies.

Your inventory has been improved too. There are now many more slots to fill like a belt, gloves and shoes. You can also place gems in socketed items, providing a nice boost on your stats.

The game and its expansion, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction are still played today and the leader-boards remain more active than ever. It is a true testimony for its legacy and rightfully so.

I can only praise Diablo II and would recommend it to everyone.

It's been a while since I've played it, but I remember it like yesterday. Sure there isn't hardly any replay value, and can cause carpal tunnel faster than any game, but it's one hell of a time, and it often challenging. The best part of the game is leveling up to defeat the insane bosses.

Almost perfect, because: Even after lots of patches, the skill tree system is not beginner-friendly. Instead, to shape a successful character, you need to read guides on the web, learn from the experiences of others. Or you will lose very much time when you find out that your choices are punished by the game.

Also, you cannot really NOT die in this game (although there is a hardcore mode). O, I will never forget these moments where everthink seemed fine - only to find myself hit by a nasty fiend with some weird combination of enchantments, taking all you life with one stroke... such a game cannot get a 10. Still, I know every bitmap of it.

Despite all of these pros that makes this a good game, I can't say this game doesn't have its faults. If you're playing Diablo II on a newer OS ( I am), you're going to witness one of the worst frame rates you ever experienced. And if you're playing with a hardcore hero (Permadeath character) you might die from the terrible frame rate. In Act I of the game,I encountered a bug. This game is fun, don't get me wrong, but it gets a whole hell of a lot boring when all you can do is Baal Runs for hours in order to get the amount of XP you want in a record amount of time. PVP is the main reason I give this a 8. It's fun when you can beat people with all your mad equipment and +# skill levels stuff. But how annoying can it be when a sorceress can transform into a bear, do warcries and cast ravens at you and still kill you? Some of the runewords should have never been made available for other characters. Instead, you'd be better off allowing players to choose what synergy they want to have for their characters. This makes it so that in PVP, people without the RIGHT kit can't do crap against people that spent hours and hours just "running" to get the precious runes that give them the amazing items of "incessant pwnage". Breaks all the fun, to me. Makes the game far too individualistic for an RPG that is multi-player. Expand

The story has some good memonts and ideas but was not as compelling as the more simple but superior original Diablo with its more traditional demons, terror in the cathedral and memorable characters in Tristram. So in the end Diablo 2 is great but I cant help but say that some aspects were better in the orginal Diablo. Expand

8/10. This game is an absolute classic, and due to the immense amount of variation in builds and styles, this game is still a load of fun to play.

The graphics suck for today's age, true, but it came out *eleven* years ago. It's still a great game, although I don't like the latter system on battle net in the slightest. Diablo 3 failed to live up to this game, so I bounced back to it

Of course I would walk people through the game occasionally and level them up and what not, but PvP is where it's at.

Now for the bad, every 6 months or so, or at least it was like that last time I played the game, they reset the ladder, so basically all your ladder stuff goes to non-ladder. You can play in non-ladder but it's filled with cheaters, so it's rather pointless to do. Then the bots that sit there and spam 24/7 has failed to be addressed for as long as I can remember, but of course why would Blizzard care about an older game anymore? I mean if you can get a copy really cheap then it's worth it, but otherwise I wouldn't invest too much into it. If they'd stop resetting the ladder then I would of rated the game higher.

The biggest offense though is the change to the single player mode, as the game was designed from the ground up for multiplayer. Enemies and bosses now respawn and the entire game world resets after you reload a single player game, and you cannot progress through the game unless you use the waypoint system. This is fine for multiplayer, but it unacceptable for single player, forcing offline players to tediously fight through areas they've already been to before. And of course, a constantly resetting game world kind hurts the atmosphere of the game also. But even the online multiplayer mode on Battle.net isn't all that great either as most online players are only concerned about item collecting and leveling up their characters, and so the vast majority of players just rush through the game as fast a possible, often skipping entire Acts, and these "rushes" are facilitated by the game's waypoint system. Blizzard sacrificed the single-player experience in favour of an improved multiplayer experience, but the game became failure in terms of both single player and multiplayer. Expand

It makes the maps seem blank, soulless and illogical without adding real replay value. * Unbalanced difficulty. Some tough fights among a lot of easy monster-bashing requiring no special skills. * Sometime, while playing, you suddenly realize how repetitive the action is. But it does not last long. * Highly addictive Total : Off course it has completely outdated graphics and purely repetitive gameplay, but it is terribly fun and enjoyable nonetheless. This is a guideline for how to properly review games. Many reviewers like to get a “feel” for a game, and arbitrarily give a game a score that they believe it deserves. This results in wildly different scores between different reviewers, and vastly different scores between similar games. This guideline addresses these problems and scores games fairly and consistently. This guideline also gives scores that are usually similar to the metacritic score.

The review score is based out of 10 points. There are no “half” or 0.5 increments. It is impossible to have a score above 10 or below 0. The review score will change as the game gets new dlc, drops in price, or if more secrets are found through the game increasing its appeal.

The scoring is split into 6 sections. The first five sections can add a possible 2 points to the final score. The first 5 sections are Single Player/Multi Player, Gameplay, Visuals/Story, Accessibility/Longevity, and Pricing.

Notice that 3 of these sections have two parts. These particular sections will be scored based on the stronger part of the game of the two. For example, if a game has a lousy single player campaign, but an excellent multiplayer component, that section will be based solely on the multiplayer as if the single player did not exist. This allows games to be based on their own merits, as many unnecessary features are shoehorned into video games by publishers to reach a “feature quota”. Games that excel in both areas of a section don’t receive should be noted in the written review, but cannot increase the score past 2 in that section. However, it can be taken into account in the final section

The final section can add 1, add 0, or subtract 1 to the final score. This final section is the “wildcard” section. This section is for how the reviewer “feels” about the game, but limits this only to this section, rather than the entire 10 point review. This section can include any positive or negative point that was not covered in the previous 5 sections.

I played DIablo 2 at original launch back in the 90s and remains one of my favorite games, but why do you think I'm giving it just a 5? Even though the remastered textures and graphics are good, and a few minor quality of life tweaks there remains significant issues and new issues that really hurt the overall experience.

    1) The addition of controllers are making it waaay to easy for loot thief's to spam A to insta-pick up loot on boss runs, its basically just spam that button and grab loot, this is almost as bad as the auto-pick up hack back in the day, honestly ~ this is a major oversight.

    2) Server instability is still a problem, many of the issues should not have happened considering this is the same engine, with just a few minor things removed like TCP/IP so the server problems shouldn't have been so bad, and still are causing issues joining/creating games even several days after launch.

    3) Loot drops are still extremely bad, yes this is a loot grinder game but I don't remember it being this bad, my zon is level 55 right now and I'm STILL using level 9 - 27 gear and the loot level range drops are still fairly low level, this didn't happen as much in vanilla D2, sure even at level 60+ in HELL you could still get some low level drops but you would still find items mostly within your level range, in D2R I've seen mostly consistent low level drops even in higher difficulty modes.

    4) They had a change to redesign and fix some of the worst issues with the game, such as the horrible Belial boss fight which is notoriously bad and some classes have a nearly impossible struggle to solo forcing them to group up just to beat the boss...same with several other bosses which for some classes really struggle, class balance has always been a bit of an issue, especially with Sorcs.

    5) It's 3 days since launch, and already seeing hackers and even dupers meaning Blizz did not really increase security or anti-cheating detection really at all, several known DUPES are still a huge problem especially with Gems and Runes.

In closing, Diablo 2 is a great OLD game with a fresh coat of paint and it looks great, and feels exactly like how I remember but these issues are holding it back from regaining it's crown as one of the best ARPGS.

Also new in this version is 640x480 resolution (gasp!) that really brings the visual acuity to a level never before seen, except perhaps 10 years prior and ever since. Basically the graphics are as awful as they could possibly be with the title still considered to be AAA. The expansion brings the resolution up to 800x600. A few months after that (in 2001), Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance came out, on a console no less, with graphics that are comparable to the now imminent Diablo 3 (estimated to be released in 2011 or 2012). You can see the trend here. But Blizzard does not focus on graphics! They focus on innovative new gameplay. There had never been a game with similar gameplay to Diablo 2 before... lol. By that I mean Blizzard is full of marketing geniuses that shove mediocre games down our throats until we reward them with billions of dollars. This concludes my review. Expand

While the combat animations are smooth and attractive, the graphics would only be pushing the envelope 5 years ago and can only be considered average now. Music is, so far, both immersive and interesting although sounds are a very mixed bag. Voice acting has some good quality to it, but the animations of NPCs in dialogue are spartan at best. If it was possible to alt-tab during dialogue and still hear the voices, I'd do it. You gain nothing by watching the visuals. As others have said, the skill trees have been "stream lined". I put that in quotes because, as we all know, simplifying something for the sake of simplifying doesn't make a game better. Blizzard assumed their average player was too stupid to handle anything even remotely complex or with any depth. After browsing the Battle.net forums, I'm inclined to agree with them. While I would have given this game a 7/10 for "Average" I am forced to lower the score substantially after their launch debacle. Blizzard chose to make Single Player require a permanent online connection. While this in and of itself is a setback for consumer rights, it reached cluster-f*** status when the entire first day of release the servers were going down every 15-30 minutes and staying down for hours on end. Every single person who told everyone "Don't bother pre-ordering, it's going to be a f***-up anyway" was 100% right. Blizzard is rapidly becoming the new EA when it comes to their respect for consumers. Expand

I really wanted to like this game as I have heard much about it and had problems with running it on my pc for a very long time until I was successful. The inventory, character death, combat system, talent selection, quest system, itemization, help features, all those things I didn't like at all and would imagine them to be a lot different if such game was made today. I found myself raging about a lot of things that I think good games should have, perhaps one needs more patience to learn all of the mechanics to enjoy the game, just like in the time this game was released (unlike now, when one has a lot to choose from). Extremely weak game. The same locations and fully the same dungeons. Extra boring story with none of a really charismatic NPSs. It`s playable with friends, but with friends even to paint a wall would be interesting. Incomparable to a really decent rpg Divine divinity for example.

Ok, so this game was playabkle for one year, but in that year I became frustrated and found this game utterly dumb. Single Player: -Lightning enchanted units lightning damage was overpowered on Nightmare and Hell -You could beat each Act in one hour -Mercenaries did more damage then you at lower levels -Diablo was harder then BAAL Multiplayer: -hacking/very little security Ok, so this game was playabkle for one year, but in that year I became frustrated and found this game utterly dumb. My left click finger started to hurt after about an hour from the mindless button mashing. Then I got killed in a battle area swarming with monsters and could not get through them to get my inventory back. Then I uninstalled the game. I gave it a 1 because it is good for strengthening your left click finger!

Bought and refunded the game. I'm one of the players affected by the AVX debacle. This is more of a critique on the tech aspects of the game and I find it very lackluster as well as Blizzard's policy of changing the system requirements at the 11th hour without clear notification to its player base. Such a disappointment.

Diablo II, I will not deny that in it's time... as an MMO, Diablo was SWEET... but it isn't now. Also, FYI, Stop rateing the game based on the expansion... that has a whole other thingy... Either way, Diablo II is Diablo I fixed... and broken... But I will not deny it was fun to play. Unfortunatly the online component is very dead... yes some people still play, but not enough to Diablo II, I will not deny that in it's time... as an MMO, Diablo was SWEET... but it isn't now. I do remember, I had specced a Fireball based Sorr... and pitted myself against a sorr that was a few levels higher than mine... Tele based. If anyone thinks Lightning is POWERFUL... PLEASE! She ran back into town to aviod dying so many times. (And then got her "friend" to come over and kill me cause she was too weak). Diablo II had fun times... but it never deserved a 10, and it certainly doesn't deserve it now. Expand

Held back from being an EXCELLENT game by the fact that it features no really interesting characters or roleplaying, it only has a few simple quests, its story is paper thin, it has a few technical issues, Battle.net is unreliable, and the gameplay is ultimately shallow and repetitive.

Don't steal, but lie and cheat if necessary. As a gamer, it's your duty to own Diablo II. [Aug 2000, p.75]
