Deus Ex: Human Revolution is absolutely fantastic. There's so many places to explore and different side quests to carry out. The boss fights can be really easy or really hard depending on the items you have equipped which was my only let down. Having almost completed a bachelor of Biotechnology I found the storyline particularly enjoyable and I personally really related to it.

The way the augs affect playstyles, guns and how you use them is impressive. On my third playthrough I discovered further routes and different ways to combine my skills to proceed, when I thought I had already discovered everything!
The story is engaging until the third act where it tapers off a bit, it may be the stale 'go here go there' objectives, especially when the lovely colour palette never changes or the story itself; possibly the most important character in the game shows up at the 1/3 point, says 3 sentences leaves, until you see him again at the end. By which time I had almost forgotten he existed. Really weird choice. The 2 hub cities are re-used and it really shows that they cut out the 3rd hub-city.
The battery refill system is balanced for the game but it's still awful. Doing more then one augmented task at a time requires eating a bar, which fills up precious inventory anyway, limiting the 'fun-experimental' factor. You're just saving them up too scared to use them instead of using them as you go along ALA Deus ex 1, Dishonoured. The game is all about augs, they really shouldn't handicap aug use so severely.
The AI is standard stupid-like every other stealth game. You should not be able to 'knock-out' multiple people and have no one notice their disappearance.
I must be the few people who likes the boss battles, but there is a problem. Stealth is the preferred method of play so when it comes to forced action you just aren't used to pulling those sharp actions to survive. Boss battles work in MGS because of the many scripted action moments to prepare you for other scripted action moments. This is probably why I loved the boss battles on my 2-3rd playthrough. I was used to the controls and could outskill the bosses in such cool inventive ways.
I have many complaints about this game but it's still one of my top games ever. There is so much to like here. A few tweaks here and there and this game could be perfect as well as ambitious.

There wasn't a point in this game that I got bored with, its environments, people, story, and game-play all keep you hooked into playing more until you uncover everything it has to offer. It has nice challenge, giving you the option to go all out blasting or being a stealthy bat-man type of character. This is an amazing and worthy prequel to the original Deus Ex, and any fans of the series, or even anyone just getting started should pick up this game if they haven't played it.
All in all this game was great, aside from a few minor glitches here or there or a bit of cheesy but memorable voice acting, this game doesn't really have anything inherently bad about it.

Its very smooth and apart one or two very rare AI glitches bug free. The guns feel real and kickback convincingly the stealth and melee take downs are also very satisfying. You get more XP for not killing your enemies but this can be dangerous as another enemy could revive them. Aside from the main story which is a good length in itself there are a lot of varied an well done side missions. Now what went badly. the big thing that I really didnt like was the boss fights they really dont fit with the rest of the game. they cram you into small spaces and force you to play one particular way going against all the freedom the rest of the game gives. In fact if you arent prepared properly some bosses can be really difficult. Thats really all thats wrong and I reccomend this game Expand

Some people argument that the many choices of skill are actually useless since only some of them are actually usefull. Well, I don't agree. Of course some of them are situational, but "situational" can make a pretty big difference in some missions, and those few times that it will make a huge difference is why you risk buying them. Anyway, is just a style, does that mean is bad ?

The most important aspect of this game, in my opinion, it's the atmosphere. It's immersive. You'll simply LOVE the wolrd around you. The logic of everyting and how social issues are portrayed in this futuristic wolrd are believable and quite realistic (we ARE talking about fiction, don't forget that)

The second strongest point to be quoted abou this game, it's the story. It's filled with action and also reflection. You want to get there and get things done because you want to know how the story will develop. The side missions ain't that bad, you'll have fun playing a lot of them.

The protagonist isn't the strongest point in my opinion, but you grow to like him.

    The graphics are beautiful.

The gameplay... oh the gameplay. I was just surprised. I knew nothing about this game when I played it. I just went for it expecting an FPS. Well, most of the part is might seem like just an FPS, but it's actually much more than that. Using your skills in the right time, deciding if you are goin' to open fire or been stealthy makes a huge difference on the outcome and in how you feel the game.

Well, simply put, it's a very fun story, with an original construction and is, above all, a very fun ride.

But the current price you'll be finding this on Steam, you just SHOULD get it.

One of the few games to had me playing from start to finish without setting it down to play another game. The story was fun and engaging, enjoyed the multiple ways to complete most missions. The only issue was the no choice in boss battles and that was my only beef with the game as a whole. Definitely one to pick up and try if you have the time.

The highlights of this game is the voice acting. The open environment. The great AI and stealth mechanics. And finally a thrilling story. You have nothing to lose.

However, the game could've been slightly slightly better, by fixing some of the few bugs and making the phase from third to first person better and less solid, for example.

But as said. Compared with the good parts about this game, the bad parts are way dont below the floor. I'd give this game 9.5 if I could, but it's not worth the top score, atleast not with this sequel!

DX1 was a sublime moment in open-ended gameplay. Both as an individual title and for the entire industry. This follows in the same vein with unfortunate console limitations. Anyone that wants to truly understand the travesty that the console generation has caused, need only see the limits imposed on this game by the hardware architecture of the aging consoles.

It's atmospheric as hell and provides that suspension of disbelief that is required for a game like this to work. I STILL say everyone should play DX1 THEN play this. But, if you cannot tolerate older graphics or gameplay more complicated than something by Bioware, you should play this game.

They are basically FMV stock footage with narration about what happened.

Everything else is spot on, though: graphics, music, voice acting, and especially gameplay. Some people criticize Deus Ex: HR b/c they think there are too many upgrades available and you can max out too many stats. I say those people need to get over themselves. If they’re so hardcore they can either not collect the upgrades (many of which are optional) or simply not apply them.

Games like this make me wonder how & why people are still playing Metal Gear Solid. This has actual, real stealth-based gameplay and figuring out ways to knock out or kill people and hide their bodies is part of the fun. Controls are tight and movement is fluid, unlike in MGS games. It’s hard for me to imagine anyone having a bad time playing this game.

And I have to say that the new game did not disappoint. Everything you'd want from a Deus Ex game can be found here. An interesting story, cities to explore, augmentations, side quests, multiple branching paths offering you more possibilities in order to deal with various situations, as well as the traditional mix of stealth, action and RPG elements.

Superb level design, great story and characters, very good stealth system (you can "stick" to barriers and move between them unnoticed) are also not missing. In general, I had a feeling that you get more EXP for choosing the stealth route, so that's what I did and I had loads of fun with this game. It can, however, be also played in an action manner and I believe that you will not be disappointed either.

The augmentations range from hacking (which in itself is a fun little mini game that makes it actually interesting to hack into things), stealth abilities, conversational upgrade to e. g. having a bomb-like attack. So, a variety is definitely present and most of the abilities are useful enough so that you want to try them out.

So, why didn't this game receive a 10 from me? For two reasons in particular:
    - The bosses in this game force you to kill them and if you focus on a stealth character, it makes the boss fight very hard, as you have to first gather equipment and ammo while avoiding the boss attacks. Because non-upgraded weapons are sort of weak, you will spend a lot of time frustratingly trying to kill certain bosses.
Note that this was fixed in the Director's Cut version, where you have the option to beat bosses by hacking, using stealth etc.

    - The ending does not take into account the decisions you've made during the game and you get to choose at the absolute end of the game which is in my opinion a bad decision.

Deus ex was clearly designed with stealth in mind…
This is a game where you play as a man who is critically injured early on in the game and wakes up augmented…
This essentially means he’s part robot…
These augmentations give you way points on the screen, energy and can be upgraded as you play. Through an xp system to eventually be able to hack higher leveled security panels, be immune to poison gas, have more energy among many other things…
There are also stealth augments if you choose to play this game stealthily…
Everything about Deus Ex is so greatly designed…
You can sneak around cover perfectly, climb through vents to pass patrolling guards…you can create your own cover by moving objects... you can sneak up behind enemies to either put them asleep or take them out for good, one being louder than the other, as well as hide their bodies to not alert everyone..
You can play through the entire game without killing anyone…
This game is also greatly designed for aggressive players like me
so you have the option to play the game as a 3rd person shooter like I did as enemies do all carry weapons and ammo…
This gives such a great feeling of freedom to truly tackle the game in any way you desire unlike other games that promise this but never truly deliver…
    its delivered here…
You can peak over cover, and there is a variety of heavy, combat, and compact weapons, all with their own unique feel to them…
All of this gameplay freedom sounds great but it’s not even the best part of the game…
Deus Ex Human Revolution is hands down one of the most fleshed out games I’ve played period…
There are side missions to complete…. Conversations to be had to convince a character to allow you to go inside a building for example, or to prevent a suicide… and not only are there conversations for you as the player, but the characters that inhabit this world all have conversations going on as well…
Some seemingly random, I never heard the same line of dialog twice, bringing so much life into this world…
you’ll hear characters on the streets of the handful of cities you visit asking for directions and the locals making fun of them because of the location they ask for… you’ll hear guards and janitors talk about work…
it’s really perfectly done and other developers need to take note…
The only downside to this game is ultimately the story…
It’s the typical bad guys wanting to use technology for bad things story..
It never really kept my intention or kept me pushing forward, luckily the gameplay is good enough to carry the game on its own.
I give Deus Ex Human Revolution

Deus Ex Human Revolution is honestly the prefect prequel to the original Deus Ex.

After being disappointed in Deus Ex: Invisible War, I was real hesitant to try this game out. But I don't regret playing this game, this game does follow with the traditional gameplay style of Deus Ex and as well as the story progress as far as comparisons go which is a big bonus due to how much I love Deus Ex. But Human Revolution had it's own moments which stand out. Firstly they had new augmentations, and these augments are amazing, going from Icarus landing system to stealth based augments. The new augments were a great touch. Gameplay mechanics were a lot better than in Deus Ex, with a new cover system (it's not as good as Splinter Cell conviction but it does has a good cover system.) some controls are weird (like aiming down the sight with the middle mouse button.) tolerable controls but it feels really weird and wonky which actually screwed me up a bunch of times forgetting to aim down with the middle mouse button. To be honest I don't know what they were trying with the middle mouse button here.

Story progresses really well in HR, mostly because it's well paced and there is side missions to do, but not too much that it draws away from the story. And also you can explore in Hub Worlds (through story progression only sadly... instead of anytime visiting hub worlds to finish side missions.) But there is enough content to get yourself entertained. Main story is amazing too, it feels like just like the original deus ex with all the illuminati, the augmentations and the cyberpunk feeling. and you really start to appreciate every single bit of the game. From reading the emails to news reports and just listening to the npc rant about augmentations or praise augments or other topics so that you feel immersed into the environment and you have a feel for what's going on. Very few games does this efficiently and Human revolution is a prime example of this.

Overall I tried to play a completionist playthrough but sadly I couldn't get enough but I have clocked in over 50 hours on my first play through with trying to get the max possible praxis kits. And after playing I was sad that it was over but this leaves me a chance to wait for Mankind Divided to come out in August. As I stated that deus ex human revolution is the prefect prequel to deus ex and I cannot wait to continue the tale of Adam Jensen in August.

Seriously, there's some 200 IQ moments to be had here, where the game definitely makes you feel smarter than you are. Or on the other hand, makes you feel as dumb as a brick, depending on how you handled the situation.

Combat wise the game is actually pretty decent but the stealth definitely shines and is borderline amazing, though the occasional horsesh*t AI does hold it back a bit. Still, it's a damn fine game with an interesting story, great immersive sim elements, and a kickass soundtrack. It's just a shame that some d*ckface degenerate decided that boss fights should be added to this. Every time those came up my mouse teetered on the .5 star button. Also since I'm complaining, whoever added **** mines that have a 3,000 foot detection radius and don't come with a disarming tutorial, f*ck you.

CDPR y'all are some mid smokers for turning CP2077 into "Neon GTA: Scuffed Edition". Eidos already gave you the blueprint in 2011 (Except for the ending, which of course is pretty much the only thing CDPR took after).

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is one of the classics of gaming’s “second golden age” (roughly 2007 – 2013). Story, music, characters, gameplay are all of the highest order. Belongs in the library of every gamer who appreciates story-telling mixed with stealth-action gameplay. Worth the purchase price of $20, but frequently discounts to $5 or less, where it is an incredible bargain.

Total size on my hard-drive: 18.2 GB

The Director’s Cut Edition adds some visual tweaks and re-designed boss-battle environments. The Missing Link DLC is included, folded into the main story campaign.

+ Story with serious themes. Starts with a literal bang and is paced well.
+ Relevant side-quests that can contain important backstory.
    + Choices matter.
    + Voice-acting is excellent.
+ Superb soundtrack by Michael McCann. Synth-orchestral sound with a techno feel at times.
+ Multiple ways to play (with the right upgrades). Stealth? Shooter? Fall safely from any height? Punch walls (discovering new passages)? Up to you. High replayability.
+ Multiple level paths. You’ll end up at the same objective, but there are at least two paths to get there (and there are frequently more).
+ The Director’s Cut features completely revamped boss-battle environments. Stealth builds are now completely legit.
+ Addictive hacking mini-game. It’s over in seconds, too, so it doesn’t slow the gameplay down much.
+ Individual weapons. Decent selection, and they all look and feel unique.
+ Well-optimized, and not resource-intensive. Locked 60fps @1440 on an RX 470 with everything maxed except Depth of Field (which is an effect I dislike, so it was turned off). Back in the day, it played fine on the desktop APU I used to have (using the integrated graphics). If you have a low-spec computer and are looking for a good game to play, Human Revolution should be near the top of your list.

+/- Not an “open world.” Rather, a few small hub areas that have some side-missions. Allows for more focused level design, but can feel claustrophobic at times.
+/- The Missing Link DLC is included in the main campaign (right after leaving China for the second time). You lose all of your upgrades once this section of the game begins (though you get them back once this section is complete, PLUS any upgrades you accumulated). Generally, the insertion of the Missing Link DLC slows down the later part of the game, but narratively it makes complete sense. And Commander Burke is a great adversary.
+/- Graphics are fair. Light-shafts and shadows look great, but skyboxes look low-res and facial expressions are wooden. Edges are jaggy even with anti-aliasing cranked up (down-sampling is the best solution).

    - Mouths frequently don’t sync properly during conversations.
    - UI doesn’t scale properly. The HUD is tiny at 1440p; I can’t imagine it at 4k.
    - Some odd controls with kb + m. Right click and hold to enter cover. Iron sights is a toggle of the middle mouse button.
    - Predictable, stupid enemy AI. Get even a few upgrades, and ghosting levels becomes incredibly easy.

Even with those few drawbacks, Deus Ex: Human Revolution is one of the very best stealth / role-playing / action hybrids. It belongs to none of those genres, but takes the best elements of each and adds in an emotional story whose morals exist in planes of grey. A game to play through, reflect upon, and play again. 9/10

In Human Revolution, this kind of flexibility can be awe inspiring, but like with many ambitious games, the individual parts and pieces aren't always satisfying on their own terms. Neither the shooting nor the stealth is best in class, and a number of flaws disrupt your suspension of disbelief. But even if the details don't stand up to scrutiny, taken as a whole, Human Revolution is an excellent game with an unsettling vision of the future we face. Expand

Eg. trying the game just without picking the "cloak" augment can dramatically alter the way you play. Or instead try a "non-lethal" playthrough. There are some small quirks in the story but the universe is so rich, so well studied and fleshed out. Adam as a character, the main NPCs, the backdrop. A world definitely worth visiting and the philosophical questions asked definitely worth pondering upon. I don't want to compare it with the original game as some people might do, it is definitely a worthy addition to the Deus Ex universe and I would happily recommend it to everyone. Expand

You can go a stealthy route, you can get robots, your augmentations, and explosives to do all the work for you, or you can treat it like a good ol' fashioned shooter. The skill trees and the items in the game supplement all these playstyles so none of them really feel left out. It was immensely satisfying to go an entire mission without being spotted or setting off the perfect trap to be able to slip past.

The hub worlds of Detroit and Hengsha Island were great too. They were full of environmental storytelling. I don't want to spoil too much but just know that the level and world design is fantastic. The side quests had some difficult choices to make, and did a good job of showing how the world is at the time of the game.

The main story was entertaining from start to finish, keeping you interested throughout the game. The one complaint I had was the chapter that was originally was added DLC (the Missing Link) in the original version but it was integrated into the main game in the Director's Cut. It personally worsened the pacing for me, but it wasn't such a huge deal as it was interesting story wise. The ending of the main story left me satisfied and was pretty open to sequels.

The characters were good too. The protagonist comes off as a jerk sometimes but I liked him towards the end. All the other characters had distinct personalities, and many of them were symbols for ideas they pushed, which was cool.

I'd say the game has aged very well. It's totally worth playing, even today. If you're curious, you can play this game without playing the original Deus Ex.

Graphically the models fall short of the quality you find in Mass Effect 3 for example but they are convincing and quite good non-the-less. The praxis system make it too easy to level everything if you save all your cash and just buy praxis points, and your choices in how to specialise don't really feel like they have a huge impact on how you will end up playing the game. Would have also been nice to have more side missions available to you rather than the handful there are, with only a couple of those feeling relevant. Normally I have a lot to write, but in this instance I don't - It's a good game and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Expand

The game is a stealth/action fps with rpg elements and a "blade runner" setting with a story that should be very interesting and full of twists(in some occasions the plot is not totally logic tbh), its quite different from the first deus ex tbh, it has a lot of potential but much is wasted by some elements not working perfectly, but overall its quite good, fun, and the gameplay is working if you like to play not too hardcore stealthy fps. I finished in less then 50 hours at normal level, never find a problem to go on. i tried to play mostly stealth, exploring all the zones and trying to find all side quests. I think i will replay it at max difficulty later on, but thr replay value is not high cause its full scripted and the story is always the same except some minor choices. I have to tell the game is very linear and the rpg elements are super basic, anyway the story is quite good, at least its better then most shi-fi movies out there. The side quests are a lot opinable, cause many of them are just things like "please my cat cant get down the tree, can you help it pls?", also its a bit sad that you cant change nothing of the story, except the different endings. Anyway i played and i enjoyed it but i think its not really a masterpiece, especially for the AI really lacking, and the fact its very very linear, also the inventory mechanic could have been a lot better. Actually is july 2012, 1 year after release, i didnt encounter a single bug or crash so i imagine many things were fixed in the past, also graphically, ive read many reviews complaining about that, to me seems quite fine honestly, maybe its not the best of the best, but its enough good imo. Music is good, even if a bit repetitive, translation and voice acting in my language is very good, even if the game lacks completey lip sync but nvm. At the end surely i think it was possible to have a far better game adding free roaming and bigger maps with more life in them, anyway i still think its a good one (considered i bought it at 7 euros, for a full price 50 euros i think i could give a 7 max). Why ruin a game with bad boss battles. Infuriating! I invested most on my points in stealth and hacking which worked great until I met the first boss. How the hell is this boss battle supposed to fit in with the rest of the game? Am I supposed to replay the game from the beginning and invest all my points in combat? This could have been a great game without it.

It's unusual for a game that combines so many aspects together. there are so many paths in each level to take, you can sneak past your enemies, or you could silently take down each enemy and hide their bodies, or you could grab a machine gun to fight your way through and if you increase your hack abilities, it will open even more ways to approach your goal. I am a huge fan of the original so Deus Ex Human Revolution had to meet some pretty high expectations to get a good review from me. So we have 2 series of gamesI am a huge fan of the original so Deus Ex Human Revolution had to meet some pretty high expectations to get a good review from me. Deus Ex HR does remain true to the Deus Ex formula and is not another Invisible War farce. The kind of game play here has been seen more recently in the Mass Effect games ironicaly borrowed heavily from the original Deus Ex 1. So we have 2 series of games driving each other forward it seems. Deus Ex 1 introduced us to missions that could be completed more than one way and upgrades that decided which way we did them. Unfortunately the original Deus Ex 1 got a little lost half way through the game and stopped supporting that, becoming a plain old shooter in the end with half hearted steps and the multi choice mission design. Which made the early game the favourite part of the original for most hard core fans. Deus Ex HR does not make that mistake, you have choices all the way through the game and best of all Deus Ex HR does a far better job of it than the original Deus Ex 1 did. So the gameplay is best described as Deus Ex 1 Statue of Liberty level on some very strong drugs. Every single level jn HR blows that original Deus Ex level away on game play terms and in terms of choices.

The tools used to active this are simple, multiple paths to every destination exist, passwords can often be found on computers for security systems. So all you really need to do is decide if you want to be stealthy or gun ho and configure your character accordingly.

Believe me you can take good 70% of the upgrades by the end of the game, so there is lots of room for experimentation here. Perhaps a little too much room actually. The difficulty levels are easy normal and hard though they use different words to describe them. I found Normal gets you killed just enough to make you think about each level. Thus turning HR in to an RPG rather than a shooter. If you play on easy, you find it becomes more of a shooter than an Deus Ex game and if you play on hard, which is called "Give me Deus Ex" difficulty, I fully expect you to be completely reliant on your upgrades to succeed. So the balance is great, though the bosses are more annoying cop outs than a real end of level story update that should have taken place. A sign of a problem that this game has actually. Unfortunately HR lacks a strong story line and its characters are too shallow to care about. You will not care about saving the main quest character the game is about. You will not care which NPCs around you die. This game is more action that story and you jump around from one place to the next so fast that the little details that made the first game special and where important to game in some ways are lost in translation in HR.

HR is a far shallower game than the original Deus Ex as a result. And at about 25 hours long for the main story and side quests on the first play through, it is a short game than Deus Ex 1 too. Going by my £1 per hour rule to gage value for money, if you only play this game once, you will be ripped off by £5 if you buy it at full price. If you can make it to 30 hours it will be good value for money but given all those details I spoke about are missing, I am having a hard time working out where those extra 5 hours will come from. Still if do not care about such things than fine but you should because without a firm expected guide to game length you end up paying £30 for games that struggle to make the 10 hour make like Batman and Bioshock 1.

So HR gets the game play right but fails on the story line and characters, basically it is swings and around about is. It is a good Deus Ex game, it delivers the gameplay we expect in spades and even sets new standards for future Deus Ex games. So it beats the original in some very important areas and falls short in other important areas. Which means its a great sequel because there are clearly ways this game can be improved in the net one and its not going to be hard to achieve next time now the formula is right for the game play again.

PS avoid Deus Ex the invisible war, it is a farce from the start and has little or no relation to any other Deus Ex game.

If you like Mass Effect, Vampire - The Masquerade Bloodlines, knights of the old republic or Deus Ex 1, then you will like Deus Ex HR too. This is a genre has a lot of fans when the formula is right and it is almost right here.

The real problem with this game are the boss fights. Most of the game is a pretty realistic experience: a few bullets are enough to kill you, and the same is true for your enemy. Some may wear hevier armor (as you can buy better implants), but the idea is the same, and often the best way to deal with a group of enemies is to strike from the shadows or just avoid them altogether, maybe finding an alternative route. You are also free to either kill or stun your enemies, with an arsenal of non-lethal weapons. As soon as a boss appears, forget all of this: you can shoot whole magazines right in their heads. You can stun them, but should you try to finish them off with the blades conveniently attached to your cyber arms they will be ready to fight back. This game has a strangely arcade approach to boss fights. One moment you're a cyberninja, the other you're jumping over the head of a boss blindly charging forward. And there is no choice between letal, nonletal and alogether non violent approach. I guess the japanese publisher takes the blame, but this quite conflicts with the spirit of the game. Too bad, this coul have been a real 10/10. Expand

I'm not saying it's a bad game, they are some very enjoyable areas and the game is very polished, excellent graphics, but I found some areas and missions to be a bit stale, the locations and layout and characters are not quite up to par with the previous games. The first few levels were the better ones.

But that is just my opinion, it's still a decent game never the less.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. PC gamers must get used to this fact: many of the big studio releases for their (and my) favoured medium are being principally developed on consoles, with console gamers in mind. Most of the attacks on this game acknowledge that fact, but resent it. There is a perception that a PC game should mean complexity and depth, whereas a console game should be accessible and shallow. Whatever the truth of these perceptions, Deus Ex: Human Revolutions is a game which has been developed for a console which stands up happily on the PC and is one of the more enjoyable PC games of this year. It is billed as an RPG-shooter. The RPG elements are located as sensibly as any leveling up system can possibly be inside the story. Jensen, following his operation, has all his augmentations intact, but he's brought out of recovery early. His body and nervous system aren't used to their newfound, mechanically-enhanced talents. Therefore, he needs Praxis software - earned through the accumulation of experience, i.e. use of his new body, to unlock the higher level abilities. Well, it's a stretch, but it's a brave attempt by the game's writers to impose a story on the notion of levelling up, something which RPG enthusiasts have taken for granted since the first tentative forays of pen-and-paper, kitchen table games onto the home computer in the eighties. Personally, I approve. Speaking of the difference between pen-and-paper, kitchen table RPGs and their electronic successors, DE:HR offers the player a decent amount of choice for the type of game it is. A pen-and-paper session over pizzas and beer is limited only by the rules of the game and the tolerance of one's fellow gamers. Not so on a computer game. All choices must be limited by necessity. The story of DE:HR implies that the action happens within the space of a few days; by necessity, it is tightly plotted. But within that, there are multiple ways to execute each mission. There are different physical routes to each objective. There are a good range of weapons to support a given player style and a sensible, intuitive inventory system. There are approaches ranging from a Terminator-style shoot-out in a Detroit nick, through persuading your way in, to sneaking in undetected. Yes, of course real people don't really patrol like DE:HR's guards do, but we are somewhat limited by the technology available to us in 2012 and no game has yet achieved a perfect patrolman. DE:HR's guards move naturally enough to keep up the illusion of reality, and even chat to each other on occasion.

it No 21st-century shooter would be complete without a cover mechanic, but it works nicely within the confines of the game. The game awards points for merciful take-downs over straightforward kills; and awards end-of-level points for remaining undetected, in order to encourage different styles of play. On the topic of rewarding, the dialogue system invites comparisons with Bioware's and tops it without question. The dialogue options accurately foreshadow both the temperament and content of Jensen's potential answers, unlike Bioware's wretched wheel. Rather than a straight choice between flippant, aggressive and passive, one must watch the tone and personality of the NPC to get the best out of the conversation. With the right augmentation, one can release pheromones to increase diaglogue options. It's just a shame that more conversations don't follow this path: a goodly number are, in essence, cuscenes, which is somewhat frustrating, given the potential shown in the interactive dialogues.

Of course, it's not all roses. Entertaining as the manual takedown animations are, they don't always gel with the preceding action and the dissonance can grate. There are four mandatory boss-fights in the game, which are an unwelcome encumbrance (and a nod to DE:HR's console roots!) and force even the sneakiest of players to play, temporarily, in an aggressive style (vive le Typhoon). Also unwieldy, in a narrative sense, are the sidequests: enjoyable as they are, they do feel forcibly levered into the time-conscious plot. Finally, the corporate-espionage-with-a-moral-dimension plot all takes a turn for the Dan Brown towards the end, invoking ancient conspiracies and giant machines we've all seen a hundred times in other games, books and films, which is something of a let down. The ending montages, particularly, are annoyingly bland and a good deal of loose ends are not tied up (DLC, anyone?)

But on the whole, DE:HR is a good game. The plot is on a par with any B-movie or airport thriller novel; the action's decent; there is enough freedom of choice to keep most RPG fans satisfied (if one recognises that this is not trying to be D&D on your PC); the dialogue system is a real hit; and the game has a sense of humour (Robocop fans will encounter a policeman named Murphy without a sense of dramatic irony; Megadeth fans a certain hangar...). Give it a go.

I don't want to spend 5-10min running around finding an entrance, that is annoyance, not good gameplay, especially when there SHOULD be a much more approachable entrance.

2nd, I have setup my vista os to allow for maximum performance in games. In The Witcher 2 (arguably prettier than Deus Ex) I am getting 30+ FPS (everything except for ubersampling on max) and no weird or occassional drops in fps for no apparent reason. Granted I have nVidia and TW2 loves nVidia, DEHR loves ATI, I also know that engines work differently. But with the way I setup my OS and the fact that my gfx card is running at 40-70% (almost never touching 90%), and I still get choppy framerates is infuriating, that should not be happening.
It should be said, the drop in framerates and the choppy framerates happens nomatter what graphics settings I use. Max, medium, low, custom, tesselation on/off, etc. So I assume that this is something that will be fixed with a driver from nVidia or a patch from eidos. If it does get fixed, then the real score should be 9/10 for this game imo.

Other than that; I love the atmosphere, I love the game world (except for the problem stated previously), I love the VA, the combat is good (AI could be better, but that goes for almost all games), the graphics ARE pretty and I really love the art style. So, some people may find the two points I pointed out to be very minor things, to me they can make me shut down the game for a time and therefore ruin the gaming experience.

But if you are looking for a more stealth/RPG/intelligent experience, this game is pure awesomeness. The environments are wide and detailed, with lots of alternate routes and hidden stuff to find. The places you visit are very different from each other, and the cities are a thing of beauty, inspired by the crowded streets and architectures of Blade Runner (as the first Deus Ex was). Story is mesmerizing and well told, and the same goes for side-quests. While playing, you really feel that there is a load of possibilities to reach a goal, to sneak around some guards, to decide the turn of the story. The way augments (the cybernetic "superpowers" you develop with experience) work is perfect. You decide which ones to grow, and you never feel like you're getting those experience points too slowly or too quickly. And it's very fascinating to go back to already-visited areas, but with the newly-gained ability to jump higher, or to fall without being hurt, and thus discover new locations. Best sci-fi game I played in a long time. If you're a completist like me, it will last for dozens of hours. I even preferred it to Mass Effect 2, both for the environments than for the additional freedom. Only reason I don't give it a 10 is because of boss fights - hard and out of contest, for a game that is best played in stealth mode - and because the ending sucks: Eidos clearly wanted to trace the first Deus Ex steps, and go for a "strong" ending, but instead it just looks illogical and dumb. Gameplay is solid. Main story missions have multiple paths catering to the player's chosen style of play. Have you upgraded armor and weapon related augs? Bust in the front guns blazing. Wanna sneak around? Find a side entrance and discreetly dispose of baddies. Wanna avoid combat all together? There's a way around it and augs to help you avoid it, too. Levels are well designed all around, and despite being comparable in size to many of the locations in the original Deus Ex, there is a considerable lack of wide open spaces that can make areas of the game feel more claustrophobic than they really are. Still, there are design decisions clearly influenced by console limitations. Many world textures are muddy close up, character model animations during conversations look strange and artifical, the FoV, while modifiable in-game, is decidedly narrow by default, and mouse movement feels jerky. These are minor complaints and do little to negatively impact the overall experience. The PC interface is informative and easy to use. Even without obnoxious preorder bonuses, there's a good variety of weapons and weapon modification which further help you create diversified styles of play. The hacking mini game is actually fun and varied enough that, while you may choose to do a lot of it, it never feels stale or repetitive. Unfortunately, locking picking and multitools are strangely absent. The developers stated they removed these features from the game to focus on the hacking mini game. Personally, I feel the result has been a missed opportunity in providing players that additional redundant layer of getting things done that made the original Deus Ex so replayable and entertaining. It also means players run the risk of investing too many points in hacking just to scour the game world of explorable little secrets at the expense of investing in other fun and equally interesting augmentations available to toy with. However, it makes XP all the more precious since you must think carefully about how you upgrade your character. Their reasoning is sound, but it is unfortunate it comes at the expense of other qualities which made the original Deus Ex so endurable. Regardless, Deus Ex fans should enjoy Human Revolution. If you don't, there is something wrong with you. Being a prequel, Human Revolution is also the perfect place for new players to enter the Deus Ex story. Hopefully it will make more people familiar with one of the greatest PC games. Expand

It's "sticky" as it uses the cover technique from games like Gears of War but doesn't utilize it in the environment properly. It's not bad - it just takes a lot of getting used to. The upgrade system is very well thought out and uses a system that is gained from XP. XP is gained from hacking, quest completions and attacks. It uses quite a bit from the previous Deus Ex games and it uses it well. The visuals are well rendered with a huge nod to the Bladerunner film and any other similar cyberpunk work. The game runs smoothly and has no visual flaws for the most part. My PC did freeze completely during a FMV towards the end though as well a lighting issue on the same area. The voice over work is very good and the audio foley is very creative. The weapon selection is very good as well as the upgrade system. There are various stores to buy equipment and ammo. The credit system is simple and there are plenty of opportunities to gain creds. There are a few different ways to approach the game by upgrading yourself: you can be more of a hacker, stealth expert or simply kill everything with weapons and attacks. At times, DE:HE can be repetitive and frustrating given that the jobs are similar and cause the player to walk back and forth over and over. The enemies AI is very predictable in some places and erratic in others. The bosses are way too easy when using the Typhoon weapon, but if you want a challenge then you shouldn't use it. It's a very entertaining and vast world which is immersive and technical. It's not perfect and falls short when compared to the first (Invisible War is slightly worse) which is a big compliment. Pretty good game, a few small disappointments here and there otherwise it was still overall a fun game. Graphics not too amazing really (DX11 wasn't used to the full of its capacity), gameplay was good, story was good (maybe a bit too dramatic at end, but still satisfying)

A good and worthy follow-up of Deus Ex, though the graphics are console level. The world is great, intriguing, funny and generelly well laid out. The only major let-down is, that this game over-emphasises hacking. W/o hacking, you are missing on a lot of the content.
Basically, this is one of the better console ports. Deus Ex could have deserved better (a real PC game), but all in all,

The graphical quality of the game is fantastic, and the design is very pleasing to look at (though some more variety in objects would've been appreciated). The physics involved in the game are a bit screwy, especially when the game determines whether or not you can pick objects up, but that's quite forgivable. Combat is what you'd expect with cover-based shooting. The hacking mini-game is surprisingly intense, and the options to explore in the game are rewarding and interesting. There is an issue with Deus Ex being so serious, however, and that's when they let you do whatever you please. I was getting a bit bored with the quests (throughout the game, I never found the quests interesting - just something I had to do so I could progress to the next area) and decided to massacre the police department. It was fun and intense. It didn't fit my character at all when he got back to the storyline dialogue, however, which broke immersion. Overall, I was often wanting more action in the game, and it was difficult to come after breaking the "timeline" of the story by wiping out every collection of gang-members, police, and civilians I could find. I recall wandering around gunning civilians in the Asian environment, and killing a civilian who was apparently important, dropping something that seemed to have no significance. However, upon picking it up, my character decided to phone a security officer at the company the character works for. The conversation went something like "Do you think a pendent with some insignia on it will come in useful." "Yeah, why?" "Just wondering." Overall, I enjoyed the game, and I think playing it on the hardest difficulty would have been much more preferable (keeping in mind I'm not particularly good at FPS games) -- at medium difficulty, there just wasn't any point wasting time with stealth. A solid 8 for me. Stealth is nice, it runs great and the story and setting is very interesting.
However, the character animation is clunky and the boss battles hugely annoying. Also, it's pretty short, imho.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a thrilling and engaging title, but it falls just short of perfect. The story, characters and voice-acting are easily its strongest points. Unfortunately, the game forces the player into a small number of 'boss' encounters which are not conducive to certain play styles. Stealthy players in particular will find themselves having to put aside their silenced munitions in favor of high explosives for a short time. This, combined with several small, but irksome graphical quirks (ie. take-downs on seated NPCs) will occasionally interrupt an otherwise perfect experience of total immersion. However, these minor blemishes won't sway one's opinion of the game in any major way. It's still an absolutely amazing title. Expand

The added bonus is that it also has mystery and conspiracy, which I also have a deep appreciation for.

Note that I never played either the original "Deus Ex" or "Invisible War", so my opinion is not informed by any past experience with the prequels; and this is not a review or an expose on the features of the game, but a surface-level stream-of-consciousness jotting of a quick thought with the intention of merely scoring it.

I hated on it at first. It really took a while for me to warm up to the game as I thought it was pretty dull in the beginning, but by the time I got to Hengsha, I started to really enjoy "Human Revolution". This at a time in my life where even games I used to enjoy seem stale to me and I've all but stopped playing games. So I think that says something for the appeal of the game. I have yet to finish as I take month-long breaks, but every time I play, I never feel disappointed. The infiltration aspect is par excellence--Up there with the MGS and SC games and the challenge is worthwhile. The environments, although over-abundantly 'gold', still possess quite a bit of atmosphere. And the story can be very engrossing at times.

What I didn't care for at all were the boss battles. I suppose some of the inspiration for them may have come from the MGS series, but they were nowhere near as fitting or engaging. They just seemed like clumsy add-ons to a game that would have been fine other wise. What's really disappointing about them however is that in a throw-down between two seriously OP transhumans, you would think the fights would be as epic as something out of a high-octane anime. But alas, they were little more than predictable shootouts.

O well. Overall, the seratonin in my brain was much healthier playing "HR" than it has been playing games of late, so the devs done something right.

    Play it.

It is like they had a great idea but didn't really knew how to work it out. Even though you have "several" ways to walktrough the levels it still feels like your undergoing a very lineair experience.
You can hack doors and machines and clear levels without even touching a single enemy, which is, to be fair, quite cool. The shooting segment is mediocre at best.At first I liked the idea of the "gold art collor pallette" but after playing this game I can honestly say that I dislike the aesthetics of this game. While the character models and interiors are not "bad" perse it does look a bit dated. What IS actually very sloppy are the skylines/views which represent the city's. Horrible. Ofcourse graphics don't make or brake a game but it does "help" the immersion. And Immersion is what Deus Ex: HR lacks.

The bottom line, however, is that HR passes with flying colours - it does have a different feel, but Eidos Montreal clearly loved the original, and as such, have paid a lot of respects to it - that, and they learnt a lot from the original too.

The storyline is much in the same vein as the original, but is it's own beast... I think it does well. This is helped by a very richly detailed and immersive world, which really does live up to the pedigree of the original game. It is extremely linear, but such is Deus Ex, and I have absolutely no complaints - to me, it is blasphemy to see some people complain about a "lack of sandbox" here - it is not that kind of game.

Graphics are not as good as I was expecting, however. There're areas where things are a bit lax (some textures, for example) and animation can be annoying and twitchy. In spite of this, the game has a wonderfully unique black & gold aesthetic, which enhances immersion even more! Music is very much ambient, but it works. The gameplay is good, and much the same as the original. I liked how upgrades worked in the original more, but the (purely) augmentation-based system here works just as well, I suppose. A heavier emphasis on hacking is alright, but I'm sad to lockpicks and multitools go - still ,these are the nitpickings of a crazed fan. :) Otherwise, you really are able to pass through levels in your own way, although certain paths will always require more patience! The game does very well in rewarding such exploration, and I think one of the greatest things about this game is that it's a world you'll *want* to explore.

I've given it 8 and not 10 because of some annoying technical issues... I have not had any issue with load times, but I have experienced lots of crashes running Dx11 mode... annoying. The game is buggy as hell, but I'm sure these will be ironed out in time.

Ultimately, this is a wonderful game which I am enjoying thoroughly. Like the original, it is not for everyone... and like the original, it may take a tiny bit of a patience to get to the good stuff, but all the same, this is a game deserving of the "deus ex" title. Coming from me, that says a lot.

This game has been a gripping escape for me. There are a few shaky spots but there are many more great things that keep me coming back for more.

The bad: Conversations. The lip sync is off most of the time and the NPCs almost always over-gesticulate (especially Malik). The voice acting isn't great for the most part, but it works. For a big budget game like this you'd have thought they could have gotten some better actors. Also, one final gripe: if you're skipping a portion of a conversation with the space key, it doesn't just skip the part that the subtitles are displaying, it skips the speaking character's entire remaining dialogue. Also the dialogue isn't stored for review unlike everything else in the game.
World depth. The city hubs are very similar to the way that ME and ME2 are handled (the map provides you a view of where you can go, not what is there necessarily, it makes it easier to get around but it isn't very realistic) There is a scarcity of side-quests and the game play isn't as open as I'd like. You're forced to go between the various locations; you don't get to pick where you're going to go. There aren't many NPCs to chat with. If you jot down the codes from the first time through you can save a lot of hassle but lose the experience. Also, for the Ghost and smooth operator bonuses, you never know when they start keeping track of them or when you no longer qualify.
Inventory: you have a standard grid based inventory with massive weapons (the sniper rifle takes up 2x6) and odd stacking rules (you can stack ammo, health power ups, energy bars, energy packs, but not energy "tubs" or grenades) also, when picking up a weapon, you automatically just take the ammo. This makes selling weapons to get more credits a repetitive chore as you have to drop your weapon (that you've probably modified) pick up the new weapon, go to a dealer, sell it then go back and get your weapon. I think most of these choices were made to encourage players to chose a stealth vs kill play style (with stealth, you'd leave the killing weapons behinds, stock up on stunning weapons and energy packs).
Bosses: bosses are pretty easy and straight-forward. The big problem comes for stealth players because there's no way to incapacitate bosses and no tricky way to manipulate the environment, you have to kill them with live ammo. Movement: With all the free-running games out there now (especially made by Eidos Montreal) and you being the penultimate augmented human, you'd think they'd have let you climb more. I like the cover system, but can stand to be improved.
Energy consumption: You need energy to use some of your augmented skills. You can get more batteries as you need them but for some reason only the last one will recharge (unless you only half use one)...I guess goes along with your play choices as to whether or not you want to go stealth and use a lot of energy. The problem there is that there is a scarcity of vendors selling energy products and when they do sell them they have a very limited supply.

Wow, a lot of complaints! Most of those are pretty nit-picky in my opinion. The game still stands up on it's own.

The good: The story. The plot is great, in my opinion. It's a bit of a rehash of and remix of other Deus Ex games but what starts out as a simple plot gets more and more complicated. If you've read a conspiracy theory laden game before you'll probably be able to guess some of the twists as they come but it was exciting and kept me gripped. I thought the game play was good, tilted to non-lethal game play (more respect from NPCs, more exp, more opportunities) but I could see turning the game into a bloodbath for fun on a second run through.
The speaking mini-games were pretty in depth even if they were fairly linear. in the persuasion talks you have, on one time through a speech option that originally worked in my favor was scorned the second time around. I thought it was interesting the bit of realism they added there. The augmentations are great and add to the game play. It's nicely explained away why most of them are unusable unlike in the first one where you had to add on as you played and why they'd call an agent "trained" when they can't hold a rifle steady or hack the simplest computers.
The visuals and visual concepts are also great. It's a dark renaissance world with bleak and glorious all mixed in.

Despite the problems, this is a great game, highly recommended.
