When I first went into DE:HR, I was just expecting another linear, stealth, fps, action game with a serious protagonist and all that similar to Splinter cell. I was wrong! The setting is in the U.S city of Detroit (mostly, you'll see what I mean) and everything about the way the city looks and the story surrounding it and the things you can do around the city all make sense and make you want to explore. Some levels are open while others are more linear but the way you can move around both areas is still excellent.
The best for last, the gameplay. The game is an fps, stealth action game with upgradable abilities and a variety of weapons, grenades and gadgets that must be managed properly by arranging them in your inventory box. The gameplay connects well with the story and the setting in that you can interact with a variety of friendly characters, make certain decisions based on your missions, decide how you want to tackle a mission by using your powers through whatever strategy you want and the games negotiation sections which involve seriously discussing with key characters in order to determine the outcome of how the story is going to go.
The game is perfect and the Director's Cut commentary mode that lets you hear how the devs developed the game really opens your eyes to what they went through.

This game can give you what Cyberpunk 2077 can't: a great story. The gameplay is not bad at all. It's definitely a must-play. I don't know if it's because of the Director's Cut version, but there are some optimization issues. There doesn't seem to be any solution.

A truly excellent game, finally allowing different approaches to all situation, even the iffy boss battles.

Final levels became a little tedious, but the first 3 quarters are some of the best gaming you can find.

To this date I can't find a game that is as good as this one, It's a masterpiece plain and simple.
To me it's how immersive the game is when music and atmosphere and story are good enough and in synch with each other it's perfect and this game deliver the best of the above.

I played for 73 hours for now.
I just bought it in 2021 and it is amazing that this game is from 2013.
I cannot stop playing it, and I have a full time job.
    Help!!!
Extremely good voice acting and NPC body talk.
I like the available choices of replies.
    They also influence the outcome.
It is similar to Mass Effect, with the big plus that it runs perfectly on Linux.

The AI is dumb, and I like that frankly.
You can kill one guy and the guy next to him does not notice it.

This game is a great experience. The combat and the rpg elements are a bit janky and rough around the edges but the great immersive world, the missions, the superb level design and the secrets outweigh the negatives. I recommend hardest difficulty, non-lethal - which is way harder than lethal ~ 30 hr playthrough. Pritchard/10

The gameplay gives you a lot of freedom in how you want to do things. In fact, you can go the entire game without killing anyone or go the other way and efficiently murder everyone in your path. You can go a stealthy route, you can get robots, your augmentations, and explosives to do all the work for you, or you can treat it like a good ol' fashioned shooter. The skill trees and the items in the game supplement all these playstyles so none of them really feel left out. It was immensely satisfying to go an entire mission without being spotted or setting off the perfect trap to be able to slip past.

The hub worlds of Detroit and Hengsha Island were great too. They were full of environmental storytelling. I don't want to spoil too much but just know that the level and world design is fantastic. The side quests had some difficult choices to make, and did a good job of showing how the world is at the time of the game.

The main story was entertaining from start to finish, keeping you interested throughout the game. The one complaint I had was the chapter that was originally was added DLC (the Missing Link) in the original version but it was integrated into the main game in the Director's Cut. It personally worsened the pacing for me, but it wasn't such a huge deal as it was interesting story wise. The ending of the main story left me satisfied and was pretty open to sequels.

The characters were good too. The protagonist comes off as a jerk sometimes but I liked him towards the end. All the other characters had distinct personalities, and many of them were symbols for ideas they pushed, which was cool.

I'd say the game has aged very well. It's totally worth playing, even today. If you're curious, you can play this game without playing the original Deus Ex.

Almost a perfect Deus Ex game, hindered heavily by third person cover system and takedowns. The plot isn't as deep as the original game. Director's Cut version fixes a lot of stuff (like the insufferable yellow filter and nonsensical boss fights) but also introduces some issues in lighting. Must play.

To be honest, I do not really like stealth-actions but this one was just awesome. The atmosphere of cyberpunk is great, even the design of the main menu. We got a lot of ways to complete all levels. Do you want to fight and kill everybody or you just want to complete this game out of enemy sight? You are welcome! The game as a great atmosphere, narrative and conflict between human and augmented humans. The stakeholders in the history are very realistic when compared to the real world (UN, Corporate Companies). The stealth action isn't for everyone, but what makes the game unique is the thematics, and the soundtrack is fantastic!

    positive:
    - great world (especially texture) design
    - great soundtrack
    - amazing main character design and voice acting
    - astonishing level of medical and technical terminology and knowledge, but not your typical techno babble from hollywood, but stuff that actually makes sense (or is true) scientifically! Amazing for a video game, felt like reading a popular science article at times.
    - very good npc model design and voice acting overall
    - pretty satisfying and balanced combat
    - well-executed stealth mechanics
    - great story (for a game, though the last few hours were actually darn exciting)
    - enjoyable and well-balanced augmentation system
    - great atmosphere overall :)

    negative:
    - very repetitive world design (especially secondary locations like hotel rooms, apartments etc, plenty of copy-paste everywhere)
    - very poor interaction with npc aside from dialogues (e.g. you can steal money or hack the computer of an npc right in front of them, and they won't even say anything)
    - very repetitive takedown mechanics (same animation for a highly-trained heavily-armoured soldier and a civilian...) and in general quite repetitive/tedious stealth (unfortunately the game heavily encourages it with xp)
    - very poor npc interaction when sneaking (e.g. taking down a guard and pulling his body away some 10m in front of another guard looking my way, lots like that)
    - extremely disappointing boss fights (on the hardest difficulty level...)

There's actual discussion of subjects that wouldn't even get a mention in most other AAA games, and the story and characters are more mature than big budget titles usually have. And this is one of the game's strongest points. What also sets the game apart are the visuals. It tries to evoke a cyberpunk renaissance atmosphere and does that well, with the caveat of heavily abusing the brown-yellow color scheme. (The Director's Cut seems to have toned that down, though.)

Unfortunately, the gameplay and the story aren't as strong. It shows that the game didn't have the most experienced team behind it; it was actually the first game Eidos Montreal worked on and released. As a result, it doesn't entirely live up to expectations set by the Deus Ex name.

The game is, naturally, often compared to its acclaimed predecessor. It couldn't ever hope to be as deep as the first game, of course, for the simple reason that the standards and focus of modern developers do not allow for such depth anymore. But this is also the reason, as I said, that it's still amazing how far along the true Deus Ex path they actually got. Since a Deus Ex game has to accommodate several play styles, the developers couldn't help but attempt to develop satisfying stealth, FPS, cover, dialogue, AI and skill systems. That seems to have been too much for them to handle, but surprisingly enough, they pulled it off in a more or less commendable way. The shooting can be stiff and wonky, the cover too sticky, the stealth too easy or unsatisfying, and the story may get fragmented and inconsistent, losing its focus as it nears the end of the game - the ending itself being the game's lowest point alongside the tacked-on boss fights (which were, again, fixed in the Director's Cut). But overall, Human Revolution is a worthwhile experience, especially as a prequel to the original.
