    Lengthy and more than entertaining enough, Demon Turf has a few issues that irked me, but this is a very impressive 3D platformer that does a great job separating itself from the rest of the pack.

    You could say that Demon Turf is one Hell of a time. So much variety in worlds and challenges. Heavy emphasis on speed, flexibility, and experimentation. With all the freedom afforded to the player, Demon Turf manages to be a generally great platformer-adventure with just enough on the side to keep things eventful and fresh. If not for some bloated level design, and with heavier polish on outside elements such as combat, this would be a bonafide classic. Even now, it's a phenomenal option for platformer fanatics new and old.

  1. Flaws aside, Demon Turf pulled me in as a long-time platforming fan. Thanks to that competitive gameplay, great sense of humour and appealing art style, Fabraz’s latest stands apart from the rest of its 3D platformer competition. If you’re after a new jumping fix, I’d recommend it.

    The world built and the characters are charming and funny, and a fun new universe to discover is promised at the intro of the game. I want to be clear the only reason this game is getting a 6/10 instead of a 4 is because of the design and characters.

    The mechanics leave a lot to be desired. Slippery movement on the ground and when landing on platforms, momentum is constantly slowed down in air during jumps, twirling, gliding and falling. Most of the upgrades make little to no difference. The double jump item (Which allows an additional flap during your double jump is barely serviceable, as the delay between the first double jump and the extra flap is too long for a platformer in this genre.) Collision with edges of platforms leaves a lot to be desired, and often you'll find yourself on a solid platform just falling and unable to move. Other items follow a similar "Could be useful if it was tweaked slightly to function well within a 3D platformer"

    It's disappointing, because it seems like platforming is built for a very specific set of actions to pass through each of the games challenges, rather than it being built for a freedom/fluid of movement to let the player make their own actions. It feels very much like it was built with speed running in mind, but the speedrunner must do the exact actions to get the fastest movement (Rather than using the mechanics to discover shortcuts and movement tech), and otherwise a casual player is trapped within a rigid and unforgiving set of controls. Jumping just feels overall bad in this game, and like it was an afterthought or was built and never refined.

    Combat is definitely the worst part about the game. It's clunky, and inaccurate, often times a full charged hand attack will collide with an enemy, only to slide right through it or off to the side. Other times, a full charge will result in the enemy moving barely an inch, even if you've hit it fully charged. Its confusing, and each time I found myself in a combat zone I let out a audible groan about wondering if I could actually hit enemies this time.

    The return trip levels seem to be designed slightly better than their original counterparts and are more enjoyable than the first pass through for the most part, but save for the snow level, a lot of the first trips are just not very much fun to play on a first pass. Also you need to play 22 return levels before being able to fight the last boss. It feels less like a fun return trip and more like a grueling "Alright, lets force you to do more specific challenges rather than explore the level in a new way"

    At the end of the day, the world of Demon Turf and art direction are wonderful, but the mechanics and level design leave so much to be desired, the game ends up not being very fun. Disappointing, because it could have been such an enjoyable experience if the platforming had been refined or tweaked with a bit more fluidity. Maybe I just expect that out of a 3D platforming game of this style and am missing an intentional difficulty curve by keeping all aspects of movement restricted, and if that's the case, perhaps this game is just not for me.

Never did i read something as stupidly bias in my life before as this and almost every point is wrong. Game is not flawless but still one of the best platformers ive played in years. Full Review »
