    Jumping with an adorable demon brings solid gameplay in atypical visuals. There is a plenty of content, but combat mechanics are boring and level design can be a bit confusing.

    Demon Turf is a good game begging the eyes of those invested in the collectathon niche. Plenty of fun hours are on offer to watch those numbers tick up and pull off some tight and joyful platforming. It may waver in some of its later combat and ability design, also proving unfriendly for younger audiences. Though just as much forgiveness is issued when you consider how devoted the game is to tackling its genre. If you’re looking for a more modest and fun game to wind down the year, this is it.

    Despite its missed opportunities and ideas that don’t gel with the core gameplay, developer Fabraz’s foray into three-dimensional platforming remains a fun-if-flawed hearkening to the genre’s glory days. By far the studio’s best trait in Demon Turf is in its relentless distilling of what made those original 3D platformers not just a joy to play, but a joy to finally see beaten.

    Demon Turf has a lot to offer in its platforming design that challenges the player at every corner. It’s a shame that it becomes repetitive upon multiple visits, but the charm of these characters adds loads to the overall experience. It’s a platformer, not much more, but it doesn’t need to be because it’s got attitude, so hail to the Demon Queen, baby.

    It’s not a soulless game or one without a spark, there’s definitely a lot of love in the final product. It just seriously needed a few more sets of eyes on it to draw out its flaws. A lot of the things that vexed me most severely could be fixed with a few more passes of the floor buffer. Yet here we are, and Demon Turf doesn’t strike me as territory worth conquering.

    Flaws aside, Demon Turf pulled me in as a long-time platforming fan. Thanks to that competitive gameplay, great sense of humour and appealing art style, Fabraz’s latest stands apart from the rest of its 3D platformer competition. If you’re after a new jumping fix, I’d recommend it.

    The world built and the characters are charming and funny, and a fun new universe to discover is promised at the intro of the game. I want to be clear the only reason this game is getting a 6/10 instead of a 4 is because of the design and characters.

    The mechanics leave a lot to be desired. Slippery movement on the ground and when landing on platforms, momentum is constantly slowed down in air during jumps, twirling, gliding and falling. Most of the upgrades make little to no difference. The double jump item (Which allows an additional flap during your double jump is barely serviceable, as the delay between the first double jump and the extra flap is too long for a platformer in this genre.) Collision with edges of platforms leaves a lot to be desired, and often you'll find yourself on a solid platform just falling and unable to move. Other items follow a similar "Could be useful if it was tweaked slightly to function well within a 3D platformer"

    It's disappointing, because it seems like platforming is built for a very specific set of actions to pass through each of the games challenges, rather than it being built for a freedom/fluid of movement to let the player make their own actions. It feels very much like it was built with speed running in mind, but the speedrunner must do the exact actions to get the fastest movement (Rather than using the mechanics to discover shortcuts and movement tech), and otherwise a casual player is trapped within a rigid and unforgiving set of controls. Jumping just feels overall bad in this game, and like it was an afterthought or was built and never refined.

    Combat is definitely the worst part about the game. It's clunky, and inaccurate, often times a full charged hand attack will collide with an enemy, only to slide right through it or off to the side. Other times, a full charge will result in the enemy moving barely an inch, even if you've hit it fully charged. Its confusing, and each time I found myself in a combat zone I let out a audible groan about wondering if I could actually hit enemies this time.

    The return trip levels seem to be designed slightly better than their original counterparts and are more enjoyable than the first pass through for the most part, but save for the snow level, a lot of the first trips are just not very much fun to play on a first pass. Also you need to play 22 return levels before being able to fight the last boss. It feels less like a fun return trip and more like a grueling "Alright, lets force you to do more specific challenges rather than explore the level in a new way"

    At the end of the day, the world of Demon Turf and art direction are wonderful, but the mechanics and level design leave so much to be desired, the game ends up not being very fun. Disappointing, because it could have been such an enjoyable experience if the platforming had been refined or tweaked with a bit more fluidity. Maybe I just expect that out of a 3D platforming game of this style and am missing an intentional difficulty curve by keeping all aspects of movement restricted, and if that's the case, perhaps this game is just not for me.    … Full Review »
