The game itself isnt that great. It looked a lot like Dishonored in the trailers and Im a huge Dishonored fan so i was super excited. The first Dishonored is 100% my favorite game, but im not so enthusiastic about the second one. Deathloop borrows a lot from the second one. The story has an interesting premise with really underwhelming execution. Extremely anticlimactic. Gameplay is fun at first but gets very repetitive very quickly. The marketing made it seem like this would be an experimental, open-ended game with tons of replay value where you can complete the main goal using different methods or routes in every playthrough. That is not the case at all. I completed every major goal in the singleplayer in around 15 hours. Its like they finished half of the game and decided it was done and ready to ship for $60. Everything is super confusing at first, I had no clue what the **** was going on for the first 2~ hours. The dialogue is really annoying and cringeworthy in some cases, even more so than Dishonored 2. Sometimes i wish Colt would just shut up. The UI is really clunky and confusing, the whole infusion system is poorly explained, man, theres just a lot of negative stuff i can say about this game. Its not the worst game ive ever played, but it does hurt to see Arkane put out such a half-assed product. Wont be playing through this one again.

I'm a big fan of Arkane's games in general, but this one doesn't do it for me at all. Leaving aside the well documented performance issues: the level design is poor by Arkane's standards, the combat feels recycled from other titles and is somewhat boring, the dialogue is cringeworthy and the game is absurdly easy all told. Really gutted about this one.

In my opinion it was a miss due to the annoying amount of backtracking and grinding required while the player is given a poor sense of progression due to lack of inventory, skills, equipment and level permanence. Deathloop is difficult to describe for someone that never played the game; it is not an open world game, a linear game or a sandbox game. It is a grindy rouge-like shooter where levels are revisited in order to gather more clues and progress the story while you avoid getting reset on the time loop as you grind a resource that you need to improve your character and keep your progression.

Unique. But unique isn't always good. And the technical issues definitely did not help.

Interesting voice acting, great world build up.
I'm not a fan of rougelite. At least this variation from Arcane is not my cup of tea, the studio should stick to its root for a more linear style of stealth game. However nice try. Over marketing killed it for me.

A quite expectedly failed experiment and nothing more. Doesn't deserve the performance whine though, it runs very well.
The plot is a disaster, it's nearly non-existent except for the characters' background. There are no proper answers for the key questions or proper motivation for Colt or Juliana. Let alone other characters, whose behaviour is way beyond understanding.

It's much less of an immersive sim than other Arkane games: only few objects are interactive and no skills except for the teleport and double jump can open alternative paths for you.
The intro and intermissions are very mobile game style: tutorials that force you through menus for long boring times, taunts, rewards etc - I guess the dark age where the lines between mobile and PC blur has finally come.
The combat is mostly shooting and it's the normal Bethesda style shooting, resembling Wolfenstein TNO, Fallout 4, Doom, Quake etc (Fallout 4 most of all).
But! The game is still an enjoyable unique immersive sim-ish action with a charismatic artstyle and beautiful modern graphics technology (even if not as much as desired).

Perfectly adequate game but I'm struggling to see where the glowing reviews are coming from. Graphically, it's not great to look at and the distinctive Arkane style rubs uncomfortably against the 60s vibe where it had a charm in dingy Dunwall and art deco styled Talos.

Colt is the best thing about the game. His voice actor is brilliant and gives the lines a lot of feeling. Otherwise,

Colt is the best thing about the game. His voice actor is brilliant and gives the lines a lot of feeling. Otherwise, it's an fps centred game with a couple of marmite gimmicks which will make people confront whether they love the reality of PVP within a single player game as much as they love the idea of PVP within a single player game. And without the PVP element this is a very, very short game for the AAA price tag, even for all the repeat visits to the four areas you can explore in game.

It's a solid 6 or 7 out of 10 game, assuming you're not suffering any of the technical issues possible on PC, but I've reinstalled Prey Mooncrash already

As someone who dislikes getting grief'ed by "infiltration" PVP, unfortunately it runs really bad on PC and desperately need optimization, so all in all it COULD be a good game provided it's running smoothly.

Deathloop is a great game. Or is it? Arkane have stuck to the formula established with the Dishonored franchise - first person stealth/shooter with an onus on characterisation and story. Even the art style is preserved in essence. And you can't really blame them for that given the success of Dishonored but they seemed to have convinced themselves that by adding the contrived loop system to layer the story, they could then pull the handbrake on innovation. For all intents and purposes this is a third Dishonored title. The graphics look fine in their own stylised way but I wouldn't call them next gen. Some of the texture work looks pretty poor (see the sea). No DLSS and a game that seems to labour most PC systems. You could overlooko these things if the gameplay was really compelling but it really isn't. If you are playing on keyboard you will have a crap time with the shift dodge. The character movement generally doesn't feel very satisfying, The gunplay is mediocre - no real skill required. The worst thing about this game is the enemy AI which is basic and easily overcome. This added to the unnecessarily generous 3 lives you get make the whole thing vey staid. You never really feel like you are in peril. If you are outnumbered rush back to the threshold of the level segment and shoot from there. Why would I then care if I have a special version of this gun or another if they all get the job done? The characters are fun and the writing in general is refreshing and often funny but it's really not enough. I would avoid unless you really loved Dishonored and can't wait until Arkane start doing something interesting again. Expand

Also, the UI is *baffling* on PC. Why game makers won't make mouse and keyboard specced UI and a gamepad specced UI for the consoles eludes me. The result was a mess of a presentation on PC, and no chance at a recommendation.

Combat AI is laughably bad and amounts to 'run straight at the player screaming'.

There are no difficulty options, so you get what you get. I'm not even sure why they bothered putting guns and mods in this game when you can simply kick the daylights out of people or waltz up to them without them noticing. That being said, it's still a really good game. I just don't feel like it reaches the heights of Arkanes previous work but that just shows how great a developer they are. It's a pretty good game but you will love it or hate it based on how much you accept the repeating loop gimmick. The moment to moment gameplay unfortunately doesn't feel as good as previous games mentioned above. There is just something missing despite the stark similarities of the dishonoured games. Honestly, they lifted quite a few assets from those games, giving me a feeling that this world is somehow tied the world of Dishonored in some way.

The real hook here is figuring out all the secrets and hints to slowly put together a "run" that successfully eliminates all the targets on your list. So basically it's a rogue like but things stay exactly the same every run through, and you just get better by repetition and remembering where things are and what time events play out. Fortunately the game does a pretty decent job of keeping track of things for you but in the heat of the moment it's a pain to have to look through all the notes and get your bearings.

Long story short, it's still a pretty good immersive sim style game with a weird rogue like twist added in. I don't hate it. Not as good as Prey or the Dishonoured series though.

Has a lot of the gameplay DNA from the Dishonored series which makes me really nostalgic for it. Story is a bit short and you can figure it all out somewhat quickly and reach the endgame, which can be disappointing. Most mysteries and puzzles in the game are also not very rewarding when you painstakingly solve them. Every time I was like "that's it?" For example, there is a locked room in Updaam for which 3 different codes are needed to unlock it. Finding these codes require a ton of exploring and reading between the lines. But when you do find them and unlock the door, no spoilers, it's underwhelming to the point of infuriating.

There isn't too much variety in the guns and powers but there is a good enough balance. Enemy AI is a joke and can be cheesed with child's play.

The multiplayer side of it is simply awful. "Griefing as a feature" would be the best way to describe it. It might be fun if you are the one playing as Juliana because you don't get to loose much if you lose. Plus you experience being a psycho and draw pleasure from ruining someone's game, which can be fun I guess. But playing as Colt while being invaded by real players is anything but fun. Nobody wants to have their game ruined especially when it is a careful stealth run and your Colt is near lower to mid levels and the Juliana invading you is armed to the teeth. At higher Colt levels it is boring at best to get invaded because any reward you get from Juliana's corpse is most what you already have and don't need, and infuriating at worst because, again, your game is ruined if you die. There is no fair level matching in invasions. I mostly keep it in the Single-Player mode and play as Colt in relative peace since the AI Juliana is as dumb as a sack of onions.

It launched in an unfortunate buggy state on PC and kept crashing a lot. Performance and frame rate was also not stellar even on a super high end PC. But subsequent updates and patches have improved the game a lot. As of this writing though, it still keeps crashing for me at the beginning of Updaam in the afternoon before I even get to exit the tunnels. Can't play Charlie Montague's time period at all now. Thanks a lot, Arkane!

This is literally every quest in this game. I certainly appreciate the effort, but, god, not every quest needs like 50 levels of complexity. I don't know, maybe some accountant or a logistics expert could appreciate this kind of approach to video game design, but I certainly don't. Which is actually really sad because there's clearly a lot of thought and talent put into this game, it's just that the devs couldn't figure out the point where adding more stuff in was just too much. Guess what game industry, if your game crashes every 20 minutes you can't make it roguelike! This is at least the 3rd chance I've given this game. There's something to like about it, but there's too much frustration. You're out Deathloop!

This game can be fun, but it can also be infuriating. Overall, it's an okay game, but maybe not worth the hassle of the punishing game mechanics. If you're into repeating the same thing over and over, this may be for you. I was over that style of video game in the Nintendo Entertainment System days.

The story is mildly interesting. It's mostly told through found letters and voice recordings, though there's also some banter between the main character and the antagonist and some okay cut scenes here and there. It's a bit hard to follow though, since you're getting it piece by piece in a very non-linear way. That's okay to do (i.e. Memento, The Sexy Brutale, The Forgotten City), but it has to be done well and that's not really the case here.

The combat is okay. It's a passable shooter. Feels a bit like Fallout New Vegas. Gunplay feels a somewhat jerky and your guns are fairly underpowered. Considering that when combat starts you almost always get mobbed, it can get frustrating. So far there's a pretty small variety of weapons, but they pad it out with weapon buffs.

My main gripe with this game is the cheap deaths. You get mobbed, your weapons are weak, occasionally enemies have super powerful weapons and seem almost invincible. There's parts where the game just kills you outright and you need to find some items/info to avoid that happening. The problem is you then have to start the day over, losing potentially a considerable amount of progress.

I'm a big fan of the timeloop mechanic in general, but it's done very poorly here. More often than not it's just a mechanism for punishing you and padding out the length of the game by making you repeat actions. I don't find that fun at all. And again, it's especially punishing here because you have to repeat everything you did the entire day and you lose any items you may have picked up along the way. Timeloops are supposed to be a vehicle for interesting storytelling, where you get a little more information each time the loop resets, not way to make the player do the same thing over and over again.

I'm 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through and I'm on the verge of rage quitting this game. There's so many cheap deaths and this game has a heavy handed rougelike style save system which doubles the frustration when the game decides to kill you off. So far 20 hours in I've had almost as much frustration as I've had fun with this game.

Deathloop is appropriate name for game with such repetetive gameplay. Visiting 4 maps over and over again. Fighting juliana that is blocking tunnels every mission. It's not cool that player have very limited amount of weapons and abilities that he can carry. Lack of checkpoints, sponged enemies, **** weapons and poor shooting system doesn't make this game enjoyable for me. This game isDeathloop is appropriate name for game with such repetetive gameplay. The game might be great, but I will never know, as it is optimized by monkeys.
    I have a pretty decent config (Ryzen 7 3700X + 16GB RAM + 3060RTX) and it won't stop crashing, whatever graphic settings I try.

The first quarter of the game really invests you with its mystery and world-building, as well as the meshing of first person shooter and rouge-like elements. Unfortunately, the potential falls flat on it's face after it's discovered very early on you can save weapons and skills from being reset for relatively little cost, and the puzzle of assassinating all targets within a single day becomes embarrassingly easy to solve. Stealth quickly proves itself to be useless and at that point, most of the levels turn into shooting galleries. The ending answers perhaps one or two of the biggest questions the player will have at the end, but most questions regarding anything regarding the timeloop are forgotten during an ending that lacks any sort of satisfying resolution. A charismatic lead, the world design, and a slightly interesting twist keep this game above mediocre long enough to make me disappointed the rest of the game couldn't live up to it's potential. Story and Gameplay are phenomenal but it just feel like the same garbage that is aimed at 12 year olds. By that I mean its very repetitive and it has a ton of unnecessary swearing in it that could have easily been taken out. But overall a good game but would only recommend buying if its on sale.

No need to think twice, we had a lot of time loop games. But Deathloop can get the most out of all elements. And whether you're protecting the loop or destroying it, don't forget to die a few times, it's fun.

Too much hand-holding, some glaring omissions in the narrative and its somewhat weak AI do let Deathloop down, but still, it’s a rare and exciting game made for both fans of Corvo Attano and those who never set foot in the Empire of the Isles before.

I applaud Arkane for switching up the Dishonored stealth/action formula here, and for addressing a few of the issues Dishonored had. Deathloop just feels too limited by comparison, though, and too repetitive by half besides. I know a lot of people who really like it, but it fell pretty flat for me.
