It’s hard to recommend Deathloop to anyone. By action standards, the game is plainly boring: it’s basically the same 4 maps over and over again with no variety in enemies or weapons. Cause-and-effect timeloop puzzle gameplay is underwhelming as well: aside from the proper solution, there are very few things to try. [Issue#255, p.56]

I applaud Arkane for switching up the Dishonored stealth/action formula here, and for addressing a few of the issues Dishonored had. Deathloop just feels too limited by comparison, though, and too repetitive by half besides. I know a lot of people who really like it, but it fell pretty flat for me.

It feels sometimes like Deathloop couldn’t decide what it really wanted to be. Stealth game? Bullet opera? Retro-cool ‘60s spy romp? Mind-melting time travel story? When it tries to be all of these things at once, it ends up not being very much of anything. I liked the core concept but after twenty hours I didn’t feel like I knew more about how an island could get stuck living the same day over and over than I did at the outset.

Deathloop may ultimately go down as my biggest gaming disappointment of 2021. I love its "bonding" system for earning and keeping upgrades, which forces players to make some compelling choices from run to run. I like getting to know this game's cast of characters. I smile when a particular stretch of finding paths and sneaking around evokes the genius of this studio's best Dishonored levels. And I'm always down for shameless homages to Majora's Mask. But the total package collapses beneath a mix of too much ambition and not enough content. It's just hard to ignore signs that seem to imply someone on the production end said, "Eff it, let's ship this game already."
  2. There's a lot more I liked in the 30+ hours it took to hit the credits, but I only have one life, not millions, so I can't type all day. Just know that those who prefer the quiet quicksaveyness of the Dishonoreds will grumble at the inability to use all their powers, the shift to shootybang, the disappearance of non-lethality and corpse hiding - all the signposts of a true immersive sim. The game is also so, so easy that's quite insulting to be honest.
    Graphics are meh.
    Story concept is interesting.

My pc isnt the most advanced in the world so i was fully expecting performance issues and i was pleasantly surprised at the relative lack of them.

The game itself isnt that great. It looked a lot like Dishonored in the trailers and Im a huge Dishonored fan so i was super excited. The first Dishonored is 100% my favorite game, but im not so enthusiastic about the second one. Deathloop borrows a lot from the second one. The story has an interesting premise with really underwhelming execution. Extremely anticlimactic. Gameplay is fun at first but gets very repetitive very quickly. The marketing made it seem like this would be an experimental, open-ended game with tons of replay value where you can complete the main goal using different methods or routes in every playthrough. That is not the case at all. I completed every major goal in the singleplayer in around 15 hours. Its like they finished half of the game and decided it was done and ready to ship for $60. Everything is super confusing at first, I had no clue what the **** was going on for the first 2~ hours. The dialogue is really annoying and cringeworthy in some cases, even more so than Dishonored 2. Sometimes i wish Colt would just shut up. The UI is really clunky and confusing, the whole infusion system is poorly explained, man, theres just a lot of negative stuff i can say about this game. Its not the worst game ive ever played, but it does hurt to see Arkane put out such a half-assed product. Wont be playing through this one again.

I'm a big fan of Arkane's games in general, but this one doesn't do it for me at all. Leaving aside the well documented performance issues:I'm a big fan of Arkane's games in general, but this one doesn't do it for me at all. Leaving aside the well documented performance issues: the level design is poor by Arkane's standards, the combat feels recycled from other titles and is somewhat boring, the dialogue is cringeworthy and the game is absurdly easy all told. Really gutted about this one. Full Review »
