It feels wrong that the third game in AAA series has lower budget and so - lower quality. Some autosave locations are very questionable to say the least, especially for game with that many bugs.
But overall - I really enjoyed Darksiders 3. It surprisingly felt like something new, and it's a real game! Challenging and rewarding.

The worst of the series. They tried to change this game like souls but they failed badly. Ps plus gave it this month free but i tell you that it’s not worth your time. They have a very good game like Darksiders II but why did they ruin it i guess i’ll never know.

On top of that, what really ruined the game for me, is how everyone including Fury herself is constantly blabbering about how she is the toughest and most amazing of all the horsemen...
YET, she feels 200% weaker in every aspect than any of the others, constantly getting hit when theres multiple enemies because first attack is AOE, next one is direct line ahead - meaning the enemies on the sides are free to hit you allready at 2nd attack.
Everything about the combat is unprecise and feels more like luck + buttonmashing than anything skillbased.
Theres just so many bad things about this game in so short time, the firebeetles, the doublejumping when she can hardly lift herself off the ground. Why doublejump if the first jump only hardly raises you in the air?... it just makes the animation look so silly and makes her feel even more clunky and stupid.
I loved the first game, I liked the 2nd - so naturally this game is a huge dislike, I wont be trying an eventual 4th game - since I will probably freaking hate it, way to ruin a franchise boys.

Played the game on the Apocalyptic setting, trying to get all the achievements. Started out great but died at first boss and had to start all over again at the start of the first level instead of at the boss. Game deleted never to be played again... 0/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Compared to the first game, this looks unfinished and absolutely not enjoyable, mainly due to the very high amount of bugs.
On paper the game looks great - action game with hack and slash rpg elements and some inspiration of the soulsborne games, but in reality the game is rotten to the core - infested with bugs and untested boss encounters.
Being a fan of the soulsborne games, I had good expectations , but boy I was wrong - I started the game on apocalyptic difficulty, the combat felt good, the enemies were fine, but as you progress in the game, it becomes more and more evident how flawed the code behind it is - almost every 15-20 minute there was a bug - sometimes graphical, other times something more serious - game breaking bugs that require restart in order for you to progress (for an example the beetles that you're supposed to throw at objectives after they're fed with red/purple goo, so they'd explode - not once or twice I've seen them spawn from the yellow nest up during a fight and totally disappear at the end of the fight, causing progression to be impossible until a restart is made - this and a few other bugs that kept re-occuring made the game really frustrating).

In regards to the untested encounters - the first one that pops up right away is Gluttony - this abomination, not only as boss but as mechanics is the buggiest **** I've played against - it is TOTALLY broken, which made it INSANELY frustrating to kill - the boss has relatively small skillset - first phase there are ~5 abilities, which on paper looks fine and boss is easy, but the way they transit from one to another skillset is very sudden, and there is no time to react at all - the sweeping tentacle happens so fast that you absolutely cannot reach the safe zone without being hit, then there's the sudden sucking phase - boss starts to consume air and everything around him. If you've not made some distance before this happens he insta kills you on apocalyptic difficulty - the problem here is that it happens suddenly - there's no warning or some specific animation - it is very similar to normal boss attack.
There was this reddit post about one of other bosses - Avarice - the boss can become invulnerable to almost all of Fury's attacks - while only Havoc form can damage him.
Other bugs include entering a timeless cycle of boss corpse vanishing after being killed and before the animation after its death starts, which restarting the game from the last checkpoint does not fix.
This and many other bugs make the experience from this game dreadful - and while the soulsborne games are punishing and unfair from challenge perspective - this game is punishing and unfair because it is not a finished product, flawed with many bugs and unpolished elements.

    Graphics:
While the graphics are nothing to write home about, they aren't too bad. Character models, especially Fury and the seven sins, are great. The real problem stems from performance issues. The game constantly drops frame rates, stutters and freezes for 5-10 seconds while loading new assets/areas during gameplay. There's no reason why a game with such basic graphics should struggle to run 5 years into a console generation. It's just poorly optimised and there's no excuse for that.

    Gameplay:
This is probably the worst part of the game. The combat has been patched and now includes a "Classic" mode which is much better than the default mode. Still, even with this classic mode, the combat is extremely poor in this game. Very unresponsive and the game and camera just don't allow for multiple enemies. When fighting groups, it's easy to be blindsided and attacked by enemies you can't see. This is made worse by the fact your health drains so quickly. Really, why does health drain so fast in this game? Just scrap the health bar and give us 3 hit boxes instead. Also, items don't work whilst your in an animation. Be that a combo, or being hit by enemies. I've died countless times while spamming up on the D-pad to use a healing item but it wouldn't register as i was in some animation loop from being hit to death by multiple enemies. There's no map, making exploration a little frustrating at times. it's also makes knowing where to go next impossible at times. The Metroidvania aspect of the game does work well. Making it fun to explore old areas with new abilities to see what secrets you can find. The save system on this game is utter garbage. It auto-saves (usually but not always) when you reach Vulgrim at one of his serpent holes. And when you quit the game. However, i have loaded saves up several times and had to replay anything from 15 minutes to over an hour again because it hadn't saved.

    Overview:
I did manage to platinum this game. I loved Fury as a character and while the story wasn't on par with the first 2 games, it was serviceable. There were times when i loved playing Darksiders 3. But they were soon ruined by times of frustration due to poor game mechanics, technical glitches and the game crashing more than its fair share. I feel there is a good game here at its core. It's just marred by so many technical issues and gameplay mechanics than ruin the experience. Which only makes it all the more frustrating, that this could have been a good game and wasn't.

There are many other comparisons to dark souls you could make, but an equal, if not greater amount of differences.
I played through the game on "Apocalyptic", and while this did make some of the huge cast of enemies feel cheap, the challenge was worth it and intricately dodging and weaving made the combat feel very satisfying when I got to that point.

Level design is top notch with interesting paths, puzzles and secrets, connecting every area to every other with "oh so that's where that went" moments like a good Metroidvania. The game lets you explore which makes you feel very smart when you figure out how to get to the place you want to go. Following the main objective was made easy (unlike what some reviewers might have said) by following the skull on the compass, but the joy of exploration is never taken away from you. Whenever you can see an area, it likely means you can reach it, like other famous adventure games.

The Art is fantastic in style, in more than one way of the word, and still matches the style of Darksiders 2, even after migrating to Unreal Engine 4, some of the newer characters do seem to have evolved a little more than the older ones and not necessarily in the best way, but it still fits.

Performance takes a hit when a lot of particles are on screen, which clearly missed an optimization pass, hugging a waterfall drives it down by double digits, but otherwise it runs fine on a modern system. Loading is done "elegantly" for the most part, with short interlude sections like crawlspaces to hide loading screens.

TLDR; More Soulslike in a good way, Great metroidvania leveldesign, very little handholding, excellent art, performance is generally fine except for lots of particles. Great.

It definitely takes a few hours to master but it's well worth it. I may go into a more in depth review after my final completion of the game but just know the lead character isn't a mary sue (thank god) it reveals some interesting depths into the series ongoing lore (thank god) and there are some definite moments where you did not see some plot changes coming (besides the obvious one that is obvious). All in all challenging game that's gonna take some time to knock out but super worth it for any fan of the serious or fan of a challenging hack and slash, while many will call it a "Dark Souls Clone" it's just because they have so little background knowledge of games that involve any amount of prowess to complete that they opt for the easiest comparison. This game came out relatively unannounced during a time of AAA botch jobs and in light of this is one of the better releases of 2018. Not outstanding, but very solid game nonetheless. Worth the money if you are a fan of the series. Considering the development Hell this game went through I am surprised it turned out as well as it did.

Gameplay is solid and engaging but very punishing.

Gameplay is solid and engaging but very punishing. The difficulty will dropkick you in the face within the first 5 minutes, even on normal setting. I am by no means a difficulty-worshipping masochist but I find this to be a welcome change of pace compared to the first two games.

The loot system and semi-sandbox style gameplay elements seen in Darksiders 2 have been done away with in favour of a more focused and traditional action RPG experience. A good change imo since i do not feel a fast and frantic genre of games should be bogged down by proper RPG inventory management and tiny gear upgrades in the form of drops.

Graphics are clean and crisp with a highly stylized cartoony art style which fits the game's setting quite well.

It does have some nagging technical issues like framerate drops here and there, ultrawide not being 100% supported and cutscenes being capped at 30 fps. The double jump also feels a little off at times but overall these are very minor issues.

It gets an 8 from me because of its tight gameplay, coherent visual presentation and the fact that it really is a game that has a lot of heart put into it, which is an increasingly rare thing in today's big money gaming business.

Darksiders 3 is different than other Darksiders games. To be honest every Darksiders game is somehow different than other. And that is not bad, that developers experiment with the game.
A bit about frustrating gameplay at launch: First impression on release date for the game was about 2/10. Terrible graphic, terrible combat, terrible difficulty. And yes, I don't like Dark souls like combat style. 1 months later and few more patches and this game from 2/10 became for me 8/10. Just the change for combat system improve the game so much, that it started to feel already like darksiders game. Dificulty maybe was tuned as well. Pre-patch I hardly killed first boss even on easy, after patch I completed the game on apocalyptic (how I said, never was a Dark Souls fan). So if you didn't like the game at the start, its worth trying now for sure. Darksiders 3 has one very big problem that first 1 hours is not so interesting, especially with the old combat system. Tutorial is terrible and when you die over and over and kill same 5 mobs before envy for 10th time, this is really bad.
    About the game:
    - The game may not have the best graphic or the best story so far, but that doesn't make it bad game. Actually I pretty much liked all aspect of darksiders after few hours of gameplay.
    - Checkpoint system is a bit strange and anoying at the begin with constant need to clear same enemies over and over again. With adding few more serpent holes in the latest patch, actually you understand that the idea is that every area should provide some kind of challenge and puzzles, which you need to pass without dieing. Serpents are enough in order, to not make too big areas without any ability to save your progress. Game difficulty in my opinion is perfect. I feel constantly challenged on apocalyptic.
    - What about open world? This kind of game are not really design for open world. There are few different type of zones, where every zone has its own type of enemies and theme. It feel different enough in order to be thrilled by every zone. Of course as in ever action game, enemy mechanics sometimes feel similar, but in this genre, this is not something too strange. All gameplay zones are connected with each other in very interesting way and you can definetly say that it is open world exploration, even if it is not standard one. But the fact that it is semi open world is not the advantage of the game. The advantage for me was, all secret areas hidden all over the map, which you can found only with exploration. And this is not exploration, which is absolutely sided out of the main line, you meed all this secrets on your way to kill next Sin. And you know that you want to looked at every corner of the room before you go to next one. Serpent holes definetly help if you accidently missed something important and want to go back. To be honest it felt like an new God of War in terms of open world. GoW was a bit more polished as graphic and experience maybe, but anyway Darksiders is good enough.
    - I liked revamped combat system. It felt much better than on launch. A lot of people say that there aren't a lot of weapons, but I can't understand how it happens that there aren't a lot of weapons if we had 6. Most Actions/Slashers has same numbers of weapons. For example Shadow of the Tomb Raider has 4, God Of War has 3(4 if we count Atreus bow), shadow of war has 2. Enhancements was really nice addition to tune your gameplay in the way you want. Bosses are a bit easy and not so fun.
    - RPG/Talents element: Ok this game don't have modern tallent tree from few different branches and type of gameplays. But does that make it bad? No... I would say something more even, it doesn't reflect on the gameplay at all. Most of the new games has pointless stupid talents system, which don't do any differences and sux. Why would you need talent tree which first cut half of the gameplay, and than you spend time to add all interesting gameplay mechanics. For example in latest Tomb Raider, talent tree was so useless, that I even didn't found something which affected may gameplay somehow (here we talk for the highest dificulty). In God of War it was a bit better, but again pretty much useless element, which doesn't change a lot. Here we have 3 main attributes and we can increase them in the way we want. Thats fine, this is good. I like it. The other "Talent" elements are weapon enhancements. Choose your favorite enhancement and max it. This is making you feel progress and developing character, without any useless trash talents as you run with 10% faster.
-[spoiler] Horseman without horse. People complains that Rampage (horse) was falsely advertised and in game you don't have actually any horse. Riding in previous darksiders was so useless, that I don't understand why people want it back. Only need for mounting is if you have big empty spaces, in which you have nothing to do. So I like the fact, that there aren't big fields on which to have horse simulator as RDR2.

most worse and annoying game i played so far. dont waste your money and time for this game.
    - The graphic is very bad, character motion like statue.
    - WTF story and conversation - Almost no bgm - Monotonous and annoying puzzle, its like the developer dont know how to make puzzle and never tried it (i just want to punch the developer face for making this game) - Very bad game

Whoever designed this game: you need to take game design classes.

I don't think it's anything big or major that is wrong, but one billion small things aren't adjusted quite right. I think you're trying to make a soulslike game except you don't understand it. Small things like the rules for using an item is SUPER inconsistent. Sometimes it just completely ignores your request to do so

I don't think it's anything big or major that is wrong, but one billion small things aren't adjusted quite right. I think you're trying to make a soulslike game except you don't understand it.

Small things like the rules for using an item is SUPER inconsistent. Sometimes it just completely ignores your request to do so and sometimes I can't even believe you can use items in such a situation.

Small things like enemy lock-on lunge when they attack. They have some sort of homing thing when they attack, as if you couldn't design the attack themselves to work properly you had to home it in. Problem with that is that it's not position dodgable, it's only dodge-button dodge-able. That literally reduces the complexity of not getting hit to a single button press.

Small things like switching hollows not being instant, so you can't chain them in cool ways. I was excited to chain things together then found that you can't because it just doesn't work.

Small things like enemies that just keep kiting you, as if they're designed for Halo 5. You're not master chief, don't design enemies for Master Chief's weapons and abilities, design enemies for Fury's weapons and abilities because Fury is what you are playing in Darksiders III and not Master Chief.

Small things like every attack is literally the same just keep pressing X. Poor reward for landing big charge attacks, do why bother? The whip is SUPER inconsistent. I think someone should make a pop quiz who-wants-to-be-a-millionaire game on every scenario where the contestant tries to guess whether the whip will hit YES / NO in a number of situations. It will be a super fun game because whether the whip will connect at any given situation is COMPLETE NONSENSE.

Other small things like ledge grab being WAY too slow for a game like this, and worst of all, enemies can attack you while you ledge grab, and you ledge grab pull up SOOO LOWWWW that enemies can attack twice to 3 times while you're grabbing up, so that you actually try NOT to ledge grab by using fire charge upwards to workaround it.

More small things like HORRIBLY inconsistent crowd combat. Dark Souls with always works a consistent way every weapon in crowd combat. This game forces you to just-frame dodge, but every just-frame counter only hits 1 enemy, leaving you open to the surrounding crowd. Why isn't there a HORIZONTAL whip just counter move????

I could go on and on and on and on and on. I think game design is all the small things. I would recommend taking classes. Yes you, whoever designed the game. Go and learn.

I'll start by saying that I'm really surprised, first of all by the good taste in my mouth that this game has left me, and secondly because I can't conceive how it could have had such a bad score from the press, I really can't explain it.

I'll start by saying that I'm really surprised, first of all by the good taste in my mouth that this game has left me, and secondly because I can't conceive how it could have had such a bad score from the press, I really can't explain it.

This is a title that does not start with the budget of God of War, to give an example of the same genre, but certainly before a game from beginning to end, developed with much less budget, and you will be hooked on command hours and hours especially if you're looking for a game with a good combat system, which is frantic, aggressive, varied, challenging and very polished.

In this installment we handle Fury, the female of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. A relentless rider with a lot of character, who will be hampered by the mission to hunt down the seven deadly sins: Envy, Greed, Anger, Lust, Laziness, Pride and Gluttony.

The most remarkable thing about the game, without a doubt, is its combat system. This is a Hack and Slash that won't let you survive if you're used to crushing buttons like crazy with the aim of creating a whirlwind of death and destruction that ends with hordes of enemies. A lot of the enemies here are very tough, and you'll have to watch out for any and all bugs around you and their movements. Fury is agile, very agile, which allows him to move quickly and perform constant dodges, mechanics that you must learn to perform at the right time, because if you perform the dodge just before receiving an attack, you can make an arcane attack that will be much more forceful than normal attacks. The arsenal will increase, becoming more and more varied throughout the adventure. In addition to his whip, the main weapon, Fury will be getting different types of weapons that will allow your style of combat to be varied and adapt quickly, and in the middle of any battle, to the enemy we are not facing. Each weapon also has associated damage elemental, such as fire, electricity, ice ... etc, and along with its particular set of movements, will include different special skills (such as planning, walking on water, breaking down certain types of barriers ... etc) that we must use to advance along the map and its passages.

And speaking of the map. Darksiders 3 presents a branched level design where everything is intertwined in a very organic and well designed way. With the city as a link, we will move through tunnels, volcanic caves, subterranean temples, catacombs, factories...etc.

Aesthetically the game looks very colorful and resultant. It maintains an artistic design much closer to the first Darksiders than to the second, since in this delivery we are also on Earth. I would emphasize that although the style marked by the first installment was not, let's say, very original, this third installment notes that everything possible has been done to improve especially in the design of enemies, which although they are still demons / beasts / insects a little random and quite generic (some in fact I think they are the same as we saw before), they are somewhat fresher and more worked than those we saw in the War adventure. Special mention for some of the bosses.

To be closing, say that the game has taken me about 16 hours to complete it, and I have played it in the third level of difficulty of four that there is. With this level of difficulty the difficulty curve I have noticed it perfect, being a quite challenging game, which requires you to learn to master well your different weapons and skills, but even dying more than in most games of the style, at no time you notice that it is an excessively high or forced difficulty. I'd say perfect.

To sum up, if you like Hack and Slash adventure and action games (and touches of puzzles and platforms) that are barely made, such as Devil May Cry, Castlevania Lords of Shadows, Dante´s Inferno or God of War, as well as more tactical and challenging games like Bloodborne or Nioh, you're sure to enjoy this Darksiders 3.

This isn't a great game. I would never recommend purchasing it. It's a hybrid of a Souls Game and a traditional hack and slash and does neither very well. I think it is decent for what it does, but it lacks the polish and fun gameplay of a God of War or Devil May Cry,

Darksiders 3 does a lot of stuff wrong. True fans will be grateful that it exists, but this game is a below average action platformer that tries to be something that is not.

Darksiders III feels like a trip to a museum, which of course doesn’t have to be a drawback. Its antiquated design has a certain charm and made me realize that I miss simplicity and compactness in bloated modern open-world games. Unfortunately Gunfire’s effort is messy – it’s rough around the edges, it made a step backwards in terms of RPG elements and environmental puzzles, some design choices are dubious, the combat system is imprecise, and there are a lot of bugs and glitches on top of all that. As a result Darksiders III can compete neither with modern action titles, nor with previous games in the series. [01/2019, p.82]

There’s precious little to elevate Darksiders 3 to the level of the previous two games, let alone its peers in 2018. It’s a game that offers few surprises, few challenges, and few moments of greatness. What it does, it does to a satisfactory level and never kicks on from there. But there’s something about Darksiders 3 that still sort of works though. It’s a B-tier production, without a shadow of a doubt, but it’s the sort of thing that doesn’t actually come along all that often these days. Fans of the series will no doubt get a kick out of the continuing story and there’s just enough here to help Darksiders 3 stand out and make for an entertaining playthrough.
