I can't believe so many people are so negative about this release, while we live in an era in which so few decent games are released. I have 200+ hours in DS1 and I believe the developers really stayed true to the previous titles. In all ways this game is like a rough gem. You have to do some effort before you can enjoy it. As a new player you need to get used to the difficulty and lack of guiding and as a experienced DaS or DeS player you need to get used to the new feel of the controls. If you dont take the effort, you won't enjoy the game. I'd like to make a few points.

First of all, Don't use key/mouse, use a controller. If you don't have any, buy one, this game is worth it. It might be ridiculous to buy a controller just to be able to play a game, but it's not. Buying a controller + this game is a way better investment than almost all games released past years in this price range.

The second point I want to make is that if you're an experienced DS fan, don't expect that you can just jump into this game and play it like DS1 or Demon Souls. The controls are different, which doesn't mean they are bad. You just need to get used them again, like you always have to when you play a new game. I also had to get used and after a few hours a was starting to love the new controls.

Third point. Don't use the pre order weapons. They break quickly (no, repair mechanism isn't broken, it's just the po weapons that break quickly), are ugly and are something that shouldn't be in Dark Souls. Dark Souls is about getting rewarded for overcoming seemingly impossible challenges and not about getting rewarded for buying the game early.

Also, dont grind because of the difficulty, it'll ruin the experience. Just keep trying and trying and trying. You'll eventually get good enough to get to the next bonfire, even while having no more healing items and only half a health bar a the start.

Surely the developers made some poor decisions, but a majority of these decisions only have a minor impact if you, as a gamer, make the right decisions. To the people with crash issues I would like to say: don't be so damn impatient. Just wait a few days like you waited years for this release. It will probably be solved quickly.

The game has some issues but none of them are gamebreaking to me. To me, the game compensates with great content and gameplay. The only real complaint I have so far is the lighting downgrade which makes the use of torches unnecessary. Someone will probably release a mod sometime that fixes this problem so I don't really mind.

Dark Souls 1 was complete catastrophe on PC, game was lagging in some places for completely no reason, sad controls for mouse/keyboard users... So what about Dark Souls II ?

It's totally different from previous DS port, game works flawlessly in full 60 FPS without any lags. Mouse/Keyboard controls? - They are fine but you will have to adjust them a little bit to your liking otherwise

Mouse/Keyboard controls? - They are fine but you will have to adjust them a little bit to your liking otherwise everything is OK with controls and I'm really happy about that!
There's also few graphical bugs that happen very rarely, personally I have encountered only one during my 8 hours of playtime in certain place.

    To sum up,
I highly recommend Dark Souls 2 as it's a solid game with excellent port from console which is rare to see nowadays.

The graphics are not very impresive, but but the art design is. The game is hard, really hard and it's frustrating. Whatever you do it feels like the game punishes you. But the gameplay is great. Combat is tense and lot of fun.
I'm enjoying this game a lot.

My only problem is that you can't viably go strictly ranged combat, but I also can't imagine how they would pull that off with how the game is built.

now controls - first i was kinda 'meh'. tried it for few hours. and now i'm rolling :) with some minor tweaks to control scheme, no mods or etc. just give it a fair try, try to get used to it, and you will be ok :) again - not perfect, but really good. i'm finishing lost bastille now, but my achievement is = no man's warth with no deaths at all, with keyboard without any fancy stuff.

so overall pc game is good, it lacks some stuff but nothing seriuos. game itself is fantastic :) ill give my 9 just because i'm not into 0/10 :)

The combat feels polished for the most part, different routes were balanced out a bit better (melee, sorcery, ranged, etc) to bring them closer together, the difficulty curve is much nicer (no Anor Londo wall in this one), and many of the environments are beautiful to look at. There is a nice blend of Dark Souls and Demon's Souls for this game, using the best of both worlds and improving upon both of them. Death carries a higher punishment than previous games, but at the same time perseverance is rewarded a little more. Dying costs you a percentage of your max health (down to a minimum of %50 I believe) but can be reversed by helping someone else beat a boss in their world or using a human effigy (I think I had about 40 of those by the end of the game). Once you kill an enemy so many times it will stop spawning upon resting at a bonfire or dying, both to stop constant grinding of a zone and to help players who keep dying a lot.

Keyboard and mouse controls are not optimal like many people are saying, however there is no way that they could actually make that happen. Dark Souls 2 uses every button on the controller to play, including the D pad and L3, which puts it at using 14 non-movement or camera buttons. If you use your mouse for the camera and the two mouse buttons for attacks (can't use more than that for default controls because not everyone has more buttons than that) then you have sixteen buttons you have to somehow manage to keybind in a usable way (14 + 4 for movement - 2 for the mouse attacks). There is no way to actually do that where it feels intuitive, especially for a game like this where you have to be able to use most of those at a moments notice.

Overall this is definitely a well made game and I believe it is getting a lot of flak for an undeserved reason. It is a rewarding game that gives one a great feeling of accomplishment when any boss is beaten or a zone you were having trouble with is passed and while it is certainly not made for the casual crowd, it is a good title for those of us who truly enjoy gaming.

The people complaining about the graphics should look at the recommended specs, it was made so the majority of PC's would have no problem running it. FromSoftware even clarified that they want the game to look good but not be unattainable to mid range users.

Game-play wise the controls are consistently responsive, when I die I usual know it was because of a flaw on my part not the game. By the way I am playing on a gamepad, the way Dark Souls is meant to be played.
This would be a 10 for me but due to the apparent very vocal minority of players having issues on their set-ups, it could likely use some minor fine tuning.

For those who sayed graphics are bad probrably have a PC value of under 800 or don't have any graphics card. might also be possible that they just have there settings on low and were to lazy to verify if you could put it up. 1080p resolution with 60 fps is pretty good compared to the consol 720p and 30 fps. loadingsGame is great, using a pc-con so i don't have the flaws of controls. That said, you need a controller. I suggest using an Xbox 360 or PS3 controller emulating an Xbox 360 controller. And then, well, get over the fact that the prompts are for an Xbox controller. This game should not, under any circumstances, be played with a mouse and keyboard, very much like other console ports (the darksiders series comes to mind) should not be played with a mouse and keyboard.

I will say that it's not as challenging as the Demon's or Dark Souls mainly due to the 3 player co-op. I soloed both Demon's and Dark a number of times, but this game has a different feel to it. Can't quite put my finger on it.

To those complaining about running out of souls due to over-farming, I say this ... Boss Runs! After you beat a boss, use your white soap stones to join others and kill the boss again, and again, and again! This replay-ability is really nice and will easily get you all the souls you need. Also, assisting in defeating a boss will give you back your estus flasks, restore you humanity and repair any equipment, so you can run until your little old heart is content!

I will mention a few drawbacks:

    1. The addition of being able to carry 6 weapons at once, all of which impact your equip load, was a dumb decision. I find myself only equipping the one weapon I want, so I can wear better armor and during a boss fight, running to corner to quickly swap out my weapons. Very annoying.

    2. The beginning of the game has been the hardest part for me. This was due to my only weapon breaking early on and not having the blacksmith unlocked to repair it. That was really, really dumb!

    3. Boss running, though rewarding, gets tedious when the master keeps dying ... I soloed the majority of the bosses first, and the assisted others and it's crazy how bad some people are at avoiding some of the more basic boss attacks.

    4. PvP - I suck at it. Where PvE is great, I feel that PvP is an unnecessary part of this game. I do like that there are areas for those who enjoy to tear it up, but it's simply not for me.

If you liked the first two, or are looking for a challenge, buy a controller and get this game!

The worst entry in the Souls series is still leagues better than anything else I played in 2014. Where Dark Souls II lacks in atmosphere and intrigue, it makes up for with fluid controls and cheeky level design. I highly recommend a PS3 controller, but an XBox 360 controller will do in a pinch.

Dark souls 2 is a great sequel, although it has some flaws. Playing this game with keyboard & mouse is incredibly hard. From Software clearly meant this game to be played with a xbox/ps controller. In the "tutorial area" the game never explains how to play with keyboard & mouse and figuring out all the bindings is a challenge of its own.

The game looks great compared to its prequel, but its certainly not next gen graphics, but this fact did not stop From Software to provide this game with some awesome and beautiful scenery. The level design feels as natural as the first Dark Souls where you're not exploring different levels, you're exploring a world. Fast traveling is something that unfortunately removes some of the depth of exploring and adventuring, but it makes Dark Souls 2 harsh punishments more tolerable. Fast traveling also lets you easily jump back in to where you left of so you can continue progressing.

Thankfully the combat system we Dark Souls veterans loves has not changed to much. It has only improved. Now dual wielding is a valid way of playing the game, and you can parry with two-handed weapons. Jumping is much easier this time around as well, as you can choose to bind the jumping button to the "Left Control Stick Button". If you preferred the old way, you can still jump with the same button you run with.

The online features is a big step up. You can now very easily and quickly summon or be summoned by players. The waiting time for engaging in jolly co-operation has shortened greatly. I've spent about 50 hours on this game and only been invaded by a real player about four times which is disappointing. The reason for this seem to be their new online matching system, which not only takes your characters level in consideration, but also your soul memory. I am still very unfamiliar with how it works so i will leave it at that.

The game is hard but fair. Something new players will have to learn is that you will die many times. It's trial and error. The game punishes you for dying, so there's an actual fear from dying. Dark souls 2 throws you off the birds nest without teaching you how to fly first. But once you get the hang of it, this game will give you some amazing and memorable moments.

Dark Souls 2(DkS2) is an Action Game/RPG that relies on an extreme difficulty curve and respawn mechanic to provide the action with a special spice that you don't see in many games. Is it harder than Demon's Souls(DS) or Dark Souls(DkS)? I say, 'who cares?' A lot of arguments devolve into comparisons, but I found Dark Souls 2 to be a unique beast when compared to its predecessors.

Is it harder than Demon's Souls(DS) or Dark Souls(DkS)? I say, 'who cares?' A lot of arguments devolve into comparisons, but I found Dark Souls 2 to be a unique beast when compared to its predecessors.

I could write a novel on Dark Souls, and a sequel on Dark Souls 2, but in the interest of brevity I will keep this short.

New weapon movesets, new death system, new interactive scenery, new stats system, new damage system, it's hard to find a part of DkS2 that hasn't been taken down to scratch and reworked since DkS. This is both good and bad, as many new problems surface (estus healing power, weapon durability drop) and some old ones return completely unaddressed (Lag-stabs, curving arrows, enemy weapons phase through walls) to menace the intrepid soul who dares play this game. The fixed problems are possibly outnumbered by the new ones, but the game still manages to feel highly polished and playable almost all the time.

Even with that, and the occasional facepalm over dated textures or stupid AI, DkS2 is a gem and you should play it right now. You will not find another game like it anywhere in the market (except DS and DkS obviously) and it gets so many things just right that you will find yourself sucked in for hours on end. The innovative multiplayer system simultaneously makes you hate, love, envy, and pity every other player in the game, and you will often end up seeing the same person multiple times as they advance in tandem with you. Some of the most rewarding multiplayer experiences I've ever had have came as a result of summoning some random person four or five times and the two of us getting to trust and know each other without ever talking(the game has no voice or text chat).

Many negative reviews are citing terrible controls, bad console port, etc. And yes, this is a console port and yes, it does pretty much require a controller to play. The controller is so much more intuitive for the combat system that mouse and keyboard really doesn't have an opportunity to shine. If you are a PC purist who can't stand the idea of a console game on your shiny rig or can't pick up a 360 controller without going into apoplectic rage, you will not be able to get the most out of DkS2 and should probably go play Starcraft 2 or something.

    Pros:
-death by lava, spider, fall, fire, poison, giant club, sickle, spear, sword, rocks, tree, ladder, teeth, water, chariot, etc.
    -unique, engrossing gameplay
-clever presence/absence of music makes the soundtrack stand out when it is present
-great voice acting makes the NPCs come to life (until you kill them)
-beautiful graphics most of the time
    -fantastic multiplayer
    -New game+ adds extensive replayability

    Cons:
-death by lava, spider, fall, fire, poison, giant club, sickle, spear, sword, rocks, tree, ladder, teeth, water, chariot, etc.
    -occasional graphics snafus
-AI is dumb as a post stuck in another post stuck in a lobotomized hamster
-lag in multiplayer, therefore tears ahead
-message system combined with invasions allows trolls and griefers free reign
-boss fights are a letdown compared to previous entries, with a few exceptions

DSII surely could use some polish in terms of Menu interface, it can be especially confusing for players who have not played the other games, but the PC port is already greatly improved and absolutely playable. I find it even a bit easier than the first one.
What I do not like is the soul memory mechanic which limits the PvP and Co-op.
Also to increase your rank in the covenant of blood is quite problematic since you have to win 500 PvP battles without loosing basically, which is ridiculous if you just want to rank up in order to get the rewards or achievments.
The bonfire warping kinda kills the idea of traveling imo.
But other than that it is a very good game, one of my favorites (could be a bit more depressing and dark though, in terms of inveroment^^)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Having not played Dark Souls, or Demon Souls before it, I was not expecting much from Dark Souls II. However, I was quite wrong. This game not only doesn't tell you what you should do, but rather lets you decide. It doesn't say you must play the way it wants you to, you can play in a large variety of ways. My only complaint (and this is a personal complaint) is that during the Ruin Setinal boss fights, I had killed all but one of the Ruined Setinals. When I went to destroy the 100 or so health that boss had left, he killed me the same time one of the two people I had summoned killed him. I then had to fight these bosses all over again, even though the boss hit the ground before I did. Other than that, the game is well worth Steam's asking price of $50. Expand

I understand that not everybody wants to spend time and/or research to get a game running flawlessly, but compared to the odysseys we had to go through several years ago, a little time spent to make the game play as YOU want, instead of forcing yourself to play the way the game wants you, goes a long way.

That said, with a bit of AutoHotKey voodoo the controls are working great with mouse&keyboard. I do not use any graphical enhancements, because graphics only do little to improve actual gameplay. The gameplay is superb, I am hooked and already started more than 6 characters, which two of those I finished the game.
As with all versions of dark souls, the difficulty is high compared to other games, but in DS2 not so high as in DS, because now people got used to the gameplay and combat.
If you like medieval combat & fantasy, give this game a try, its worth it. For new players the starting area is by far the hardest part of the game, but when you got past that, the game shines and doesnt stop at impressing and challenging me.

I purchased a xbox 360 controller just for this game and i still not regret it, besides the great quality of that controller, the game really went up from 5 to 9 with a gamepad.

The game has changed a lot compared to Dark Souls 1, but i loved all the changes.
For example your stuff and health will be repaired if you rest at a bonefire, so you are not forced to repair all the time.
Also the World isn't anymore designed that you have to run hours just to get to the next smith.
In Dark Souls 2, you have a Mainplace, like in dark souls 1, but this time it is diffrent and i will not spoil anything.
I finished Dark Souls 2, i don't finished Dark Souls 1, why? because i was to low skilled to beat all the bosses and you are forced to kill all the enemys on the way to a boss in Dark Souls 1.
this was changed in Dark Souls 2 (thank you!), now you have mostly a bonfire next to a boss or at least, you have to clear the area 15(or was it 12?) times, after that, the enemys will not spawn anymore, but you have to kill each enemy 15 times.
You can reset this, but i will not spoil this (google it, if you want to know!).
So this is the first big change, more Bonefires, but also you can teleport to each Bonefire at start, but only to one you found and activate.
The menus are changed to you get used to them pretty fast, also the player has a little delay now, putting up the shield could take you a second but same here, you get used to it very fast.
I like the enemy design, but the only problem i see with Dark Souls 2 compared to Dark Souls 1, is the world/story.
You have a lot of Enemys/Npcs/items you really don't know and never will know about, i finished the game with 3 diffrent characters + one with N(ew)G(ame)+ but i still don't know what some npcs do, there just there and do nothing more in the game.
But beside this, i love the game, you can summon help, you can help other people...and you still can get invaded, but more on specific parts of the map.
I don't get invaded on many parts of the map, but on some parts i get invaded each 10 minutes.
So in my opinion, i loved from software for removing the "try &error", also the boenfire(teleportation) and fair bosses, to be honest, some of the bosses in Dark Souls 1 are very unfair (damn you capra demon!).
Now with Dark Souls 2, i had a lot of fun, the changes are understandable and clever.
But i think for the pro-gamers who finished DS1 like 3 times, are a bit disapointed, but for that you can still use one item, which makes the game even harder!

The only disapointment was the last boss, after i killed the boss i was like "thats it?" even for me, it was way to easy.

This one of the best combat action game I've ever played. The fact it's also a role-playing game that makes you invest a part of yourself takes it to another level.

I didn't give it a perfect 10 because of the online pvp issues. Hackers are abundant and I don't like that pvp is sometimes forced. I enjoy pvp but I did not enjoy some of the mechanics that promoted ganking like the bell tower or certain areas of the game.

Still a classic, and could very well be one of the best series of all time.

Now, to the criticism. Firstly, the multiplayer: it is enjoyable for a while, but then you encounter the inevitable jerks who are virtually undefeatable due to overpowered weapons. Secondly, the ending is just so vague, sudden and anti-climatic... it is not the same as the first one where vagueness gave it a certain charm or glamour, now it feels like someone ran dry of ideas and tried to terminate the project before it went downhill.

Nevertheless, a collection item, one day this will be remembered certainly as one of the best games of the decade.

I am so mentally exhausted over RPGs highlighting the path...making *the thing to pickup glow...Dark Souls series games literally show a lovely cut scene and then like I said basically boot you in the ass and tell you to go like you would a teenager who needed to find a job.

Dark souls II made up for a lot of the PVP short comings and connection issues that Prepare to Die had (on PC). The PVE felt very similar and was only made *easier due to the face that most people sort of knew what a souls game was. Dark Souls perpare to die was vicious... almost like a Great White Shark swimming in chum. Dark Souls II however was still vicious but a lot more fun...like a Great White Shark wearing a Party hat..

I have over a 115 hours into this title...two level 130 + characters and almost every day I still get the urge to start again...try a different build and really just be in that Dark Souls world. The atmosphere created especially with a could ENB tweaks (PC again) literally make me "Praise the sun!" around almost every corner.

The sound...the voice acting...the depth are all second to none. Sure the NPC characters mouths dont move but the pure voice acting is spot on...The complexity you can find in this world if your patience is high is unmatched.

Some people moan about having to use a controller on a PC game...(insert cricket noises here). I have had a controller in my hand since my first DX 4-100 that I built in the late 80's...they are for gaming and PC's are the master race of gaming...so no big issue for me there.

I can only hope for more souls games...at a minimum DLC content soon.

I have heard that Demon Souls may get a part II which would be epic considering I never got the chance to play (never came to PC)

Dont miss this game if your a true hardcore RPG fan...

It may be low on direct narrative and high on twitch gaming skill demand, but It also requires grasping the games solid character stats basis, and a continual piecing together of the deep, subtly hidden narrative (e.g. in NPC backstory & item provenance), requirements immediately reminiscent of 'oldskool' and implemented faithfully here, even though the gameplay is very much a new beast.

The technical triumph of Dark Souls is its melee combat, each weapon type (~20 in all) has its own moveset enabling wildly differing combat depending primarily on what the player chooses, although being comfortable swinging them all pays off as adapting beyond your comfort zone will be required and weapon set knowledge transfers an advantage (logically) against the many devious enemies on your path. No other game has accomplished such a consistent portrayal of hand to hand combat, it has a high learning curve, but once peaked it becomes intensely satisfying.

And for me personally thats where the real triumph of Dark Souls resides, utterly regardless of normal narrative techniques to involve the player emotionally, this games combat (incorporating the whole death-hallowed-life cycle) has managed to make me identify closer with my nameless & voiceless avatar than the vast majority of all the great cRPGs of the past.

    It's a Masterpiece, get it & don't give up !

DS2 (vanilla) is moderately better than DS1 (fully patched & modded) in PC responsiveness, DS1 remains the more difficult game, arguably slightly better on that score, and a more interesting hallowing mechanic, but I imagine some of the "streamlining" for 2 is probably a good thing designed to ease new people into the world better.

Make no mistake, these games will challenge & disturb you !

When you finally get through that tough boss that took you hours to finish, its one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever feel. Besides the gameplay (which is near perfect), the lore is also a very interesting part of the game's story as well. Dark souls 2 isnt direct with its story line at all. In fact, the only way your going to end up understanding most of the story behind different bosses, or the land of Drangilec, is by reading up on the history of specific items and souls you get through the game. You'll also be able to talk to different npcs during your playthrough. The reason im not giving this game a perfect score is because doesnt feel all that original. Many bosses, weapons, and even some different areas of the game all feel like they were almost copy and pasted from the original Dark Souls. Also, the game doesnt always feel 100% fair like the first one did. What i mean by this, is that in some areas of the game, you'll encounter enemies or bosses that'll slide and move in your direction as you try to evade. You'll understand if you play the game, and i HIGHLY recommend that you play this near masterpiece. Expand

Now I'm just gonna go ahead and say I have the game for both console and PC and let me just say that the game is phenomenal, it is a truly amazing game, sure there are a lot of bad things about the game as well as there are good things but let me lay it down like this.

    The Pros are as follows;
1.Co-op - Haters come at me but co-op is amazing and especially fulfilling in this game, sure it's less hardcore to go in with a friend but at least in this DS2 they improve the functionality of co-op by adding the name engraved ring (It allows you to pick a specific server to make co-oping with friends easier). Now say you are struggling and being destroyed by a boss that you just cant seem to get past and you're close to giving up, boom you can summon other players from their worlds and they can help you, sometimes teaching you new secrets as well such as hidden walls and other things throughout the area before the boss.
2.The Story - Now don't you dare tell me that there is no story because there is, it's difficult to find the story because there is no narrator feeding you the story like other typical games, items tell you snippets of the lore behind characters or places, the story itself is really interesting and very in depth, although there are some unexplained things but the story is something unique in itself, if you want to know the lore without the hassle, look up a Youtuber called epicnamebro, he'll tell you all you need to know.
3.The PVP - Yes there are hackers, yes there are people who troll and do cheap tactics, but that doesn't matter, you can knock hackers into lava or into an abyss or do other kinds of things to get rid of them or simply overcome the cheap or troll with sheer skill which makes it that much more satisfying. The PVP is fun, seeing other peoples characters with different cool armour combinations or weapon setups is genuinely interesting and you can do some really cool setups to stand out. There are certain areas that are intended for PVP like the Door of Pharros which is a labyrinth where you force other players to invade you and you can set traps using lockstones to make it harder but I won't tell you how to exactly do that.
4.Combat - Now there are different styles to combat such as dual wielding and power stancing which make dull weapons like daggers much more interesting with extra move sets, but that's best left for another time. There is a huge combat variation, you could be a defensive turtle who likes to cast pyromancies while wielding a giant club bearing heavy armour, you could be a hexer who also uses sorceries, miracles and pyromancies which would make you a true spell user and give you huge variety in spells. Or you could be a deadly assassin type character with high Dexterity and a fully upgraded dagger to critical hit your opponent to death, the choice is up to you.

There is more but I am limited with space so I'll move on to the cons

    The Cons are as follows;
1.Graphics - Now before anyone slaps me in the face saying the graphics are decent or they aren't an issue I fully understand that, I mean I play the game on Xbox so lets be real here, the game does have a lot of textures that are just copy+pasted on walls or on ceilings or even on the floor but the games graphic beauty comes from the bosses, the equipment and the cloth textures (which aren't the best but I like them), but I think it might be an aesthetic thing since Demon Souls and Dark Souls pretty much look the same.
2.Network - The networks suck lets face it, people have issues all the time with trying to play with other players or disconnecting during fights and things like that. If your connection is good however then you shouldn't have any lag issues unless the other guy is from Japan of course or if they have bad internet, at least it's an improvement on Dark Souls.
3.Difficulty - No I am not complaining about how the game is too hard or anything like that, I am complaining about how the game is too easy...at least on the first playthrough, granted that the game gets harder but because of a bunch of babies who complained about Dark Souls 1 being too hard, From Software decided to dumb it down a lot to make the game more accessible for the casual gamers, some bosses were genuinely difficult (Smelter Demon took me at least 6 tries before getting it right) but some were a joke like that Jabba the Hutt looking thing in Harvest Valley.
Music - There is barely any music in the game bar some boss music and that honestly disappoints me, I know it's not been a staple of the series but something for the sake of ambience would be nice. Just a personal little gripe though.

This is gaming from a GENUINE gamer who actually bought the game 2 days after release and has played it thoroughly and will be buying the DLC later this week. Also to the people who gave this a low rating, stop being a fricking moron and buy a gamepad for the game, it's obvious that it's going to be stupidly difficult on keyboard. Amateurs.

Multiplayer aspects are really well done. I was at first opposed to playing online, but found that it actually improved my enjoyment of the game. Far more content with less repetition overall than Dark Souls, the only issue with Dark Souls 2 is that the story is a blatant repeat of Dark Souls. There are more viable weapons, secret areas you won't discover on your first playthrough, changes between New Game and New Game + (Although they could've done much, much better).

This is probably the best the Souls series will ever get, but it suffered from being a Souls game. Many people complained that it wasn't as Dark Souls even though it was better, and I think it's fairly obvious that we were just all getting bored of this formula getting churned out by From Software. Still I played this for a good 200 hours, while Bloodborne only deserved a single playthrough that I almost quit out of, and the DaSo 3 test revealed that it's just a **** rehash most people ran through to see the crappy scripted boss. The magic is definitely gone from the series now that it's Call of DarkOps: Infinite Rehash, but this was the last and best effort.

As long as you aren't playing PVP, if playing PC, leave the main attacks as double click left and right mouse buttons for two handed. Your best bet is going flame Long Sword (check online to find it), then lightening Claymore to +10 and win buttons.

I have tried shift + mouse button for alt attack, honestly, double click just seems easier. You will never be as good as a cheating useless console hand set player [Ghey, come play me with a KB], don't worry, not even a PS 4 can really send an email to your mum - even if you wanted it to.

This game is gold, just really a really **** port.

My most played Souls game and the only one where I had a "souls experience" (since when playing the other titles, the challenge of the souls games was clearly not so bad). While there are many weak spots in hindsight, the game still has fun zones, bosses and moments.

Big problems are the bosses, too many and they are so weak. But some of them have very good storys. I love the storys from the third DLC. Even with this there are good bosses, that reminded me the good bosses from DS1.
And the zones are so uniques. That when I see the zones from DS3 I cant accept someone saying DS3 is better.
The mechanics are horrible, yes, but a little better than DS1. And they balanced the classes. Like magic, priest and piromancer, and now they are **** except mage they were always ****.
How about the story. It is explained by a waifu (half dragon) ... why. Anyways now the npcs are very good guys not like the ones on DS1. And half of the bosses has story, more than 25% from DS1.
Okay the best part of the game is in the start. Majula. In DS1 you had the Fire Shine, there were 3-4 people but then you could bring a lot of people THAT go away while you continue with the story. But in Majula, everyone is happy there. They are relaxing. You can come here whenever you want to just talk with friends, watch the views, jump to the hole, fight some pigs. Majula is beatiful.

I can't say anything about the keyboard and mouse controls because I'm used to play the first dark souls with the 360 game pad and I'll continue to play with it in Dark souls 2. It's really hard to talk about the game without spoiling anything but I'll try it. The game is harder then the first one. at least the normal enemies are. sadly the bosses are a bit easier. The loss of quality in the stage design, not only in its structure but even on an artistic level, is evident, and the abuse of dark locations coupled with the strange torch mechanic, sabotages a bit the difficult balance between frustration and fun so crucial in this saga.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's Demon Souls 1.5 |(which isn't necessarily a bad thing). For people who didn't get to play Demon Souls but played Dark Souls you're probably in for some nasty bumps. Losing health each time you die (with the effect only being reversed by using a human effigy/ being summoned and helping another player defeat a boss) is the biggest change from Dark Souls. The level design is more like Demon Souls in that there's a main hub world and all the other worlds are connected to the hub.

    Pros: +Excellent enemy designs
+The game has some standout environments (Majula, Forest of the Fallen Giants, Iron Keep, No-Man's Wharf)
    +Tons to explore
+Retains the ambiance/atmosphere of previous games

Cons: -Some areas are just plain cheap. There are a few bonfires where enemies are directly positioned outside (Straid's Cell, The Sinner's Keep bonfire, one of the Earthen Peak bonfires).
-The game sometimes relies on overwhelming you with enemies to increase the difficulty (which limits certain playstyles like dual wielding at times).
-Keyboard and mouse controls are doable but not great. I'd recommend a controller.
-The guard break is changed from a kick to a swipe with your weapon (which is much slower and way shorter range). This sucks for regular gameplay but makes PVP less of a kicking match :P
-Still basically a console port :(

After many hours and multiple playthroughs I can honestly say this game is great. It is as difficult as you could expect from a Souls game and the port is leaps and bounds ahead of the first installment on PC. I thoroughly enjoyed playing as various types of characters, and although some styles of play may not suit my fancy as much as others, each is rewarding in their own way. Game PlayAfter many hours and multiple playthroughs I can honestly say this game is great. It is as difficult as you could expect from a Souls game and the port is leaps and bounds ahead of the first installment on PC. I thoroughly enjoyed playing as various types of characters, and although some styles of play may not suit my fancy as much as others, each is rewarding in their own way. Game Play gets a solid 10/10

My problems start arising with the poor graphics. This game, when I first looked at the trailers, promised next gen graphics with advanced lighting and particles, and improved resolutions. While we got the resolutions or the most part, lighting, particles, and textures are overall bland and leave the world much less beautiful than it could potentially be. The physics are good but sometimes the controls can lag or overcompensate leaving you wondering, "how did that even happen?". Overall, Graphics and Physics gets a decent 6.5/10. They simply aren't up to snuff when you look at modern games, considering the age.

Sounds. Sounds in this game I find to be acceptable. if you're using surround sound or simulated surround headphones the sounds can be very informative and be the difference between life or death in an instant. Overall I have no major qualms with the sounds as they are generally good and the soundtrack lends itself to the overall atmosphere of the game quite effectively. Sounds get a 9/10

The last thing I want to mention is the multiplayer system of this game. While it is at times easy to find people to play with, it is very sporadic. Usually help can be found in front of boss fog or at the beginning of difficult areas, which is fine, and also optional for those who don't want to play with any help. Invasions are the same as the first installment, sometimes rather annoying and unfair. Its never fun being stalked by the same lvl 200 player over and over again when you're just trying to reach the next boss room in an area at lvl 45. But invasions, like helpful multiplayer, is part of how the Souls multiplayer system works, and they are acceptable. The major flaw of multiplayer that has plagued Souls games is the lack of ability to find your friends, in specific, in game. While Souls games are supposed to feel rather lonely, if multiplayer is an option, why not be able to play with friends? It just doesn't make sense and is quite an irritant. Hopefully a mod similar to the first Dark Souls will come out to enable friend to friend play. Multiplayer gets a satisfactory 7/10.

    so 10 + 6.5 + 9 + 7/40 = 8.125 ~= 8/10

Overall, a great game and well worth the money I spent to buy it on release, despite the pet peeves and lack-luster graphics. As with any game of this size, it is not without its' glitches, but it is an amazing game and well worth the purchase.

I should start with s of this game. It is dark souls, it has beautiful lore, awesome gameplay, magnificent views (my favourite location is Dragon Aerie), hardness and my favourite... you kill bosses and progress not with level or high damage sword, but with skill. Some bosses are unique and interesting. PVP or Jolly co-op is just awesome (after I defeat boss on my own, I like to help others). There are added tons of items and mechanics what make game better. And the ending is quite good.
Now about cons. and I found only one big flaw what made me sad, it is bosses. The problem is, that there is too much knight bosses, and sometimes they even repeat. Few bosses are just copy/pasted from ds1(like scorpion lady(ds2) and spider lady(ds1)). Well I must admit that ornstein is copied for lore and his attack are different, so I wouldn't count him as flaw, but sometimes you just feel thet it's too familiar, in a bad way. Another con for bosses is hardness, you meat Persuer (just a knight) and this is your nightmare(and yes, only after I defeated him, I received an info of 90% easy damage, but the way I defeated him as knight was even better) . Then you meet an awesome dragon in cage and he dies from 10 hits or you meet Lord of Giants( who should be hard as hell and awesome in this way)... I killed him on 2nd try. And final boss wasn't **** but he/she was disappointing
In sum-up I can say, that this is great sequel, not perfect, but great one. If you just compare with what came out in 2013/2014 (bugged and not finished bf4, simcity, Rome:TW2 and others) DS2 is best right now you can get in 2014(for me). DS2 receive from me 8.5/10. Great game and great sequel. I would add one more plus point if they add steamworkshop (new gear, funny mods, fantasy of fans). Right now I'm replaying game with same character I did before and I receive many new enemies and test my skill. Praise... well, you know what to do.

DS2 does have a couple of notable bosses like the Demon of Song but for the most part they are just a variation of a knight in armour.

The levels also fail to inspire. There are too many caves/castle settings, and for me at least, did not inspire a sense of wonder like DS1 did, and there seems to be a lot of repetition in themes from DS1 to DS2.

Perhaps the biggest failing is the combat. It's not as fun as it used to be. Hit detection is a bit iffy and parrying is just unusable. No longer will you be parrying for laughs like in DS1.

Boss fights are a mix bag of super-easy and borderline cheap. Don't expect unforgettable battles like the Capra Demon or Smough and Ornstein. A lot of them, specially humanoids, can be killed by sticking close to them, rolling on attacks and attacking while they recover from the attack. And then there is the Smelter Demon that hurts you with fire damage if you get close to attack him, then one shots you with his fire sword.

I am a bit disappointed with this sequel, but DS1 was such a masterpiece and it left so much unspoken and up to interpretation that this game had little chance of duplicating the magic.
The difficulty still there but this time it doesn't feel as balanced as it used to be. It's not there as an obstacle to master and overcome. Now it feels like it's there because that's what was expected of it. It feels synthetic and forced.

I am being harsh. In itself, it is a very good game, just don't expect DS1 again.

Before I get bum-rushed by a bunch of people crying on how the K&M controls are bad, I'm just going to call you an idiot and tell you to learn to set your own bindings yourself. Unlike DS1, DS2 offers a VAST set of keybindings; and most of you have not even bothered to touch them. When FromSoftware promised you a solid port, they promised you it; you just need to adjust things to your own preference. (Cough, you did it with the modding community in DS1, ect. DSMfix.)
Anyways. The game overall is absolutely great. Lots of playtime can be invested into it, and like every souls game, there's a certain point where the game is a cakewalk because you adjust to its unique learning curve, but the game still becomes absolutely rewarding after every enemy. Of course, the bosses seem a little rushed; they have easy to learn movesets and such, but they still have a very high challenge. The gameplay is smooth with a solid 60 FPS, even when I run an ENB on it. Visuals are nice and gameplay is fun. Only pet peeve I have is the Demon's Souls styled PVP. Story progression is also vast and great, lore is perfect. About 30-40 good hours should be spent before you'd even bother to beat the final boss, ect.
TL;DR: Good game, K&M complainers need to shut up and learn how to check the options, solid game progression, PVP is very different and 'off-setting' compared to DS1.

I saw some minor bugs in my 2 playthrough i've done so far, but nothing gamebreaking.

There are indeed some things that could have been better, but this game dont deserve the crap you are giving it.

I heard mixed things, and eventually picked it up on Steam. Dark Souls 1 was a favorite of many hardcore gamers and so this one had high expectations to live up to. It met most of these expectations. While it improved on some aspects of Dark Souls 1 it also took some steps back. The port to PC is much improved this time around and it is much less hassle to get the game up and running without the horrid GFWL.

The storyline like DS1 is fragmented, and it is told through the interactions with the NPCS whom are more numerous this time around. The storyline isn't really forced on the gamer in the DS series and I don't pay much attention to lore in games anyway, but I have heard the lore is worse than the predecessor.

Being familiar with the DS1 feel I died many times till I got the hang of the feel of this one as it is a bit different. Once you get used to it though, it is very enjoyable. With a 360 controller the jump mechanic has changed but is still quite cumbersome to press the left stick as you run forward, and has resulted in me dying a few times. The kick mechanic has been replaced with a shield break and this was an interesting change.

While DS1 had excellent hitboxes, the hitboxes in DS2 are frustrating at times. You get hit sometimes when enemies clearly miss you visually from attacks that have no AoE. In a game where the slightest mistakes are so costly this can be quite problematic. The hitboxes for arrows are even worse with arrows getting blocked by obstructions that are not visually in the way. This is a minor part of the game though so not too big of a deal, but worth noting. Enemy tracking has been upped a few notches since DS1 for a few enemies and bosses. Enemies will change direction mid swing to counter you moving out of the way which is frustrating, and causes you to adapt more. Invincibility frames for rolling has been changed so you have less leeway to dodge when you roll out of the way of an enemy, and it now scales with a stat.

The durability mechanic has been greatly improved adding more depth to the game. Weapons degrade quickly but automatically repair upon refreshing at a bonfire. This means that it is a good idea to level up more than one weapon so you have a back up when the weapon gets close to breaking.

The world was very organic in DS1 with everything being interconnected. This is no longer the case, and while zones run into each other there is not this interconnected feel. Warping between bonfires can now be done from the start. This all does make it harder to get immersed in the atmosphere and while it is still ok, the atmosphere is superior in DS1.

Soul farming and twinking has been greatly discouraged this time around. Enemies have a limited number of respawns now discouraging farming them, and if you keep dying to a boss you won't have to kill all the regular enemies anymore leading up to it. The new soul memory mechanic calculates your total souls earned and matches you in pvp this way. While it prevents players leveling up being completely outmatched by twinks it makes it frustrating for those at higher soul memories who have been struggling. When you die and lose a lot of souls and fail to return to your bloodstain regaining them it is still calculated. This system makes it very frustrating on those that have struggled a lot in this way, and also those that do not spend their souls efficiently.

The game is still difficult, unfortunately much of the difficulty in this game is due to the game throwing many enemies at you at once more often than the first one. The game is slightly friendlier to those who are not familiar with the souls games while not making it too easy for seasoned players. This is a nice change. There are more options to heal now with the addition of lifegems. I personally find this a bit overkill as it causes me to be less careful about being hit, as they come in abundance. The boss difficulty as a whole has been lessened. I died many times to almost every boss in dark souls 1 before getting the hang of a strategy and downing them. This time around it only took me a few attempts at most for the majority of bosses. The bosses as a whole are less creative and memorable this time around.

The netcode leaves much to be desired with a lot of lag in pvp where players still hit you even after you have moved away. This is a big problem and happens in too many encounters. However finding summon signs, and getting into encounters is much improved over DS1.

The game is poorly balanced between playstyles. Casting builds have a much easier time in pve than melee does for the majority of bosses. This is quite frustrating.

Overall this is a great game but don't go in expecting it to be too much like DS1.

I waited a LOT for this game, and overall I was not disappointed. Too bad it could have been way better. There are a lot of issues that could have been worked out before launching the game, such as the well talked about hit box problem. On the plus side, the graphics look nice and work very well even on less powerful systems.
However, the story and feel of the game fall flat. A true DS1

However, the story and feel of the game fall flat. A true DS1 fan can easily tell they changed directors, the atmosphere just isn't up to par, unfortunately. The story is convoluted, confusing and feels recycled. Certain assets are even reused from DS1 and instead of being a nod to the previous game as seems to be intended, it comes off as lazy and half assed.

Maybe a little underwhelmed, but not disappointed. It's different from both Dark and Demon's, but somehow feels like a strange combination at the same time, which is good (but again, different). By no means is different bad, in fact I think that's this games sticking point. If it was too much like the first, I don't think it would have been as enjoyable for someone like me, who knows the mechanics inside out, upside down and backwards. I feel like I'm new again, holding up my shield while slowly turning the next corner, and hoping not to come across some new trap.

For all the hate it's getting for not being exactly like Dark Souls, I can agree with some of the points. The weapons degrade at a shocking rate, although I am still early on (3 hours in) so who knows, upgrading may fix that. And of course, we could discuss the lighting engine and all that fluff, but it's been said and done before. We know it's not what was shown at E3 in 2013, nor what was in the beta, but whatever. Although, I still feel that it's trying a bit too hard to give the lighting effects a chance, because nothing actually looks, you know, dark yet... Here's hoping The Gutter proves this point moot.

Anyways, first impressions aside, I'm glad I purchased this game, and I plan on playing it for a good long time. Is it as good as the first, I don't think so (although I'm a admittedly jaded), but it doesn't have to be... it's its own game that stands up just fine with the Souls line. So I hope to see you all out there, and have some jolly cooperation! Oh, and don't forget, seek larger souls!

Game has been updated and seems to work for most now. I haven´t played for long yet, but from what I saw I´d give the game a 10/10 minus one point each for graphics (only slightly improved from DaS1) and controls (I use a Xbox-controller, so they are fine for me, but even when using mouse/keyboard the games always displays the Xbox buttons solely, which is unlikely to be fine for everyone).

Great game and the PC port is good, although you should still play with a gamepad and it clearly looks like a port. It's still the best version out there and I recommend the graphics mod called GeDoSaTo DS2 Edition because the original graphics are also clearly a port of the lesser console graphics.
The new multiplayer options are great and offer a nice diversion from the core gameplay.

I actually feel more confident with mouse and keyboard in this game than with a controller.

The game looks nice, its an improvement from the console versions. But it still suffers from not being as good as their teasers, probably due to the redesigns they probably had to do to get a nice framerate on consoles. There are some bad textures, tiled textures, cardboard cutout backgrounds, a few badly placed enemies and seemingly pointless empty areas that screams redesigned levels - at least to me. Regardless, its likely to get mods soon enough - which is hopefully possible without threat of VAC bans

But, it is a fun and worthy title entry to the souls series. It improves upon some of the gameplay and mechanics, but some decisions will be controversial; like the despawning enemies after they have been killed often enough, and how invasions have a smaller presence.

Its a console port, but its not a bad one. If you enjoyed previous Souls games, you will probably enjoy it, but some may find the feel of the game has changed and it has lost a little bit of the charm. Its one of my favorite games to come out of late, but it has a few problems.

Game play is solid and feels like a Souls game should. Bosses are phenomenal and I feel like multiplayer works much better in this game than it has in the past. The only reason this game isn't getting a 10/10 from me is because they lied about the graphics and the controls in game still show the Xbox controller buttons. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I do want to give a fair view on the dark souls 2. Some people say it is hard so it is bad, and some say it is hard so it is great.
It is important to point out no game is suitable for everyone, so do not trust other but trust yourself. I think Dark Souls II is great when compare to other BAD games like Ride to He__. Dark Souls sound track, environment, map design, ambush, attack move, level balance, shows what BAD game can not make it. The fun of Dark Souls is that you die so many times to beat a FKing boss but when you finally did it, it feels fking good. What improves form Dark souls 1 is the muti online and the half health thing. I know some of you think it makes the game soooo much easier BUT it is the point of Dark Souls. You can choose to be bad (invade other player), or play good (help other player beat boss). The game help finds you true self, be bad or be good?
Overall, the level design is the best base on all other game(not include Dark Souls 1). I have not seen a single game would put so much effort to build a old-classic world while now people want to play Call of D__ or Battle Fie__ or Titan Fa__ these based-advanced-world setting. Namco Games is brave that to make Dark Souls 2. So my support of this game is not only for Namco but the entire game society, I do want more game that not like Counter Str___, Left _ Dead...

IF YOU JUST PLAY THIS GAME FOR ONLY FEW HOURS, AND SAY IT IS BAD, DO NOT PLAY DARK SOULS 1, 2 and even 3.

There is no certain path to choose in DS II, and it definitely does not hold your hand through the beginning, and the control scheme for people using keyboards may find it difficult to adjust. To say the least, there is a steep learning curve. The story, is somewhat original and is interesting, but it's not given to the player in a cohesive way that RPGs are meant to give. Nevertheless, the game is addicting, and will attract hardcore gamers from all genres. I would recommend this game to hardcore RPG fans, as well as people who would want a challenge.

However, what kept me playing this game for 700 hours+ was instead the PvP. A drastic improvement over Dark Souls 1, with better connectivity, quicker weapons and what I felt was a higher skill cap, due to the new parrying/backstab system. I am aware that there are some that think Dark Souls 1 PvP was superior, but for me, Dark Souls 2 really fixed the issues of Dark Souls 1 PvP. Expand

    - Agility & invulnerability frames are a plague.
    - Bad level & world design.

    - Somewhat boring bosses. At least 20 of those 35ish bosses are really simple and often even recycled as well.

One feature that I really liked were the areas that players could invade you in to stop you from reaching your goal!

I knocked one point off the score because I felt that warping between bonfires was a lousy and lazy mechanic. I would have loved another world that was more connected like the first dark souls. It also lacks the feeling of being fair at some points, even though overall, the game isn't as hard as the original. The problem is that they tried really hard to make the game harder and forgot to make it tough but fair that the original clearly was.

In terms of visual fidelity, Dark Souls 2 is understandably better looking than the original, and the PC port is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING when compared to the original. The animation is a bit worse in my opinion though, and the biggest pet peeve of mine is the walking animation, which looks so bad compared to the original. The running animation is fine though, I might even go as far as to say the running animation is better than the original game's. This honestly makes me just want to run whenever I'm doing anything since the walking animation is such an eyesore.

In terms of the lore, the game starts off with a cut scene about this guy jumping into the abyss, but the problem is, the game allows you to be a female character, which goes to show how unpolished the lore is. The game's bosses are also incredibly similar to the original game's bosses. Add to that how a lot of the bosses are just dudes with armor and swords or lazy remakes of iconic moments. All these combined make Dark Souls 2 Inferior in almost every way compared to it's predecessor.
