Amazing game, near-prefect port makes a great game even better! Amazing game, near-prefect port makes a great game even better! I have not had a single crash or problem since I started the game up a number of days ago and I've already put 20 hours into it already. The port runs at 1080p @ 60fps with 2-3 second load screens on an i7 as opposed to 15-25 seconds load screens on the PS3 (which I've already put 200+ hours into that version). People who are having problems with game crashes at start up are in the VAST minority and FromSoft is aware and working on a fix. In fact, I believe they have patched it and it's working for more people. Others who've complained that keyboard and mouse being horrible are incorrect. Mouse + Keyboard DO take a while to setup but it's quite intuitive after taking the time to get acquainted with that setup and getting a feel for the combat (which can take time even on a controller). Yes, the button prompts use Xbox 360 icons and so do the stones in the tutorial, if you can get past this hump you will find the controls do work well. My personal preference is for a Xbox 360 controller or any game pad in general, that is the easier option as this game was designed for one and works great. As you can see the Metascore for this game is a 9.1. Critics who know what the Souls series is about give this game a great score. I believe people who don't like the game are casuals who didn't expect this game to be as difficult as it is or are disappointed that this game is not quite up to Dark Souls near-perfect standards and have cheated themselves out of a stellar experience. I've seen people walk into sequels (video game, movies etc) with incredibly high (unreal!?) expectations and get burned for it. If you've never played a Souls series game do some research, walk into this game with an open mind and you will have a good time.

Before I begin this review there are some things I'd like to get out of the way:

    1. Being bad at the game does not make it a bad game
    2. Not being able to run the game does not make it a bad game
    3. This game should not be compared so closely to other RPG's like the oh-so-popular Skyrim

With those three points cleared up, I find it satisfying to say that Dark Souls II is a fantastic game.

Following its predecessor Dark Souls, this sequel brings the same "Prepare to Die" mentality that veterans of the series are familiar with. In fact, Dark Souls II returns this same attitude alongside new characters, weapons, area designs, game mechanics and polished graphics. Upon first startup (by the way, I had NO startup issues whatsoever) I got the "Me vs. The World" feeling that I knew so well from the previous game. Upon navigating the locations that surround Majula, I could see various enemies waiting to kill me, yet I felt so alone. This is a feeling that I am rarely presented with in any other game. Needless to say, I like it a lot.

Certainly this wouldn't be much of a review if I only shared my praises for Dark Souls II.
There are really only two minor hiccups that I would like to discuss, the first being the "no-respawn" mechanic. After killing an enemy 15 times in Dark Souls II, they cease to return to life upon your resting at a bonfire. As this was not the case in Dark Souls (the first), I think it should have been an optional mechanic. While it may help players that can't seem to overcome certain foes, it also hinders the collection of items from enemy drops. I found this personally irritating while trying to obtain all pieces of an armor set only to find that I could no longer kill the enemy that dropped those pieces. That being said, this problem can be solved fairly easily with the use of a Bonfire Ascetic. Although the ascetic will increase the difficulty of an enemy, this shouldn't be much of a problem for the seasoned Dark Souls player.

The second slight issue that I found with this game was the fact that sorceries have a ridiculous damage output. As I went to fight the Guardian Dragon boss with two phantom magic-users, I was a bit disappointed to see that such an epic looking dragon was destroyed within under a minute. I am inclined to believe that this is related to the power of the spells rather than the weakness of the boss (at least in this case). Casting may get annoying in PvP as well, but it can be contained if you know how to properly fight close-ranged.

All in all, I will give Dark Souls II a 9.5/10 (rounded my score here up to 10).
As a past fan of the Souls series, I definitely consider this entry worthy of its title and would recommend it to any gamer willing to put in a little effort and maybe some tears.

Seriously, if you aren't done breast feeding yet, you don't need to be playing this game. This game has console roots, so the fact that you are trying to play it with inferior kb and mouse is ridiculous. Many steam games play better with an xbox 360 pc controller so why not take the time to invest in one.. This is NOT a first person shooter so stop treating it like one. Stop dogging the game over stupid things like kb and mouse controls.

If you don't like the graphics, fine - I get that - it's not the best in the world and maybe it is a far cry from what was demo'd, but the graphics ARE better than the first game and I've not experienced any game bugs yet after hours of gameplay. Levels, enemies, and bosses are still very interesting and carry a lot of surprises which keep the gameplay fresh.

And stop whining about the friggin difficulty for crying out loud. If you have played and beaten a Souls game before, you should feel right at home, but if you haven't, try going back and playing Dark Souls or Demon Souls and find they are just as difficult.

This game is about doing things right the first time and paying close attention to every battle and every thing you do. If you play carefully, you will avoid a lot of the deaths and won't have as much issue with the declining life bar. If you play carelessly you WILL be punished. That is by design - if you don't like it go back to your Call of Duty garbage or your brainless, spineless shooter games that let you save the game every step or heal automatically back to full health every few seconds. Don't throw a game under the bus that is tailored to the hardcore gamers out there that enjoy a good challenge and don't expect to have the game completed for them on a silver platter. It's not your cup of tea - I get it. But it is BY DESIGN to be difficult.

The controls are fine, graphics are more than serviceable, there is a lot of depth to the game, and a much more in depth character creation system than the previous game. If you don't like the 4 preset faces, then customize one of your own for crying out loud! The game DOES let you do that. And if you are trying to decide to buy the game based on the user reviews, keep in mind that if you filter out the nonsense 0 score reviews due to stupid stuff like convoluted kb and mouse controls and gamers that whine about the difficulty, the game would receive much higher scores.

The critics got it right this time. Read some of those reviews, they much more closely represent what this game is about and are more thought out than so many of these user reviews are (I'm talking to you 0 review whiners - what I like to call the dumb masses). If you don't like one element of the game don't condemn the entire game, take off a point or two, but not 10.

How can people take your review seriously when it is OBVIOUS you are throwing the baby out with the bathwater. If you dislike the game and want to give it a negative review - fine - just intelligently explain your case and don't over criticize the game for adhering to its roots. And please do the rest of us a favor: grow up, wise up, man up (except for you lady gamers out there), or shut up.

This game is just as good as Dark Souls and improves on nearly every aspect of the first game. Devoted servers make the online much easier to handle. The graphics as compared to the Xbox version (I own both) are insanely better. PC: 4k/1080p (As high as your screen allows) at 60fps, and yes, with an AMD video card. Did I mention seamless controls, environment, and no frame skips? Not even lag. The best part is quick loading. Instead of a whole minute on Xbox, it is about a second on PC. Xbox: 720p, 30fps, lag and long load times, with some occasional frame drops.

This game is the pinnacle version of Dark Souls II. It is easily playable even on low end computers, and works like a charm even with keyboard and mouse. Ignore the low scores, this game is a true gem.

    9/10
    30fps at 720p, occasional framedrops
Long load times, annoying when you teleport a lot between areas.
Online play can be a little messy on Xbox servers, no word for PS3 as I don't have it.
    Ideal controller for gameplay

    PC Version
    10/10
    60fps at 1080p / 4k resolution
Seamless loading and no lag anywhere
Great online play if you have decent internet
No real complaints, it is by no means a bad game

The game is perfect for anyone desiring a true challenge, but not an impossible one. The game will push you and punish your mistakes, but not agonize you. It just doesn't hand hold you like most modern games. Skyrim is great, and it is an example of a game where a map and guidelines are necessary. But Dark Souls is not one of those games. It requires skill, patience, and intelligence to truly enjoy, but it will be an experience you will not regret.

If you really wish to experience whether or not this game will work, then torrent the game and play it. If you enjoy it, please buy the game and support this small company. Besides, you won't have any online play if you don't buy it.

Never played with controller before and never had a console -- I enjoyed every moment of the game. Still needs a bit of fine tuning but overall a fantastic entry to the Souls Series, especially from a COOP and PVP aspect.
A very competent PC port and with Durante's GeDoSaTo tool you can pretty much restore the old TGS demo lighting with barely any performance loss.

PC controls suck, however, they can be easily fixed by AutoHotKey and similar programs.

Third, multi-player is good and fine, more invasions and sinners for the blue sentinels would be nice. Co-op is nice though. P.S. : If you want to connect to your friends better, use a name engraved ring while picking the same god, (look as matchmaking chart for more information).

Lastly, I think the armor in this game looks more cool then the ones in Dark Souls 1!

Subtle, nuanced world with challenging gameplay; this game would be a perfect 12/10 if the PC controls had been mapped a bit better by default.

    Why I love this game:
    - No babysitting: the plot doesn't hold your hand and neither do the enemies. There are plot points that only occurred to me after 100 hours of playing, and only then after being curious about why something happened one way rather than another. It's up to you to figure out what's going on around you or not. "You will wander this land and not even know why, Hahahahahah..."
    - Mastery vs Grinding: Ever played WoW? This is not that. You can grind to level up all you want and still get ganked by a low level enemy. Learn how to parry and backstab. Study your opponent and use his movements against him. A good player with a starting weapon and low level can trash a character who has a million souls with well-conceived strategies. This game is a victory over stupidification.
    - Rich, subtle and textured world. There is a feel to dark souls that arises from the underlying premise. It permeates the air and gave me a fear that either I was being helplessly drawn down into quicksand or worse that I'd already been swallowed and was slowly winding my way to inevitable destruction...

    Cons:
PC controls: Way better than Dark Souls I, but the tutorials were all given in controller buttons so I had to look up all of the controls on the internet. Also I had to remap keys to be able to jump attack and guard break effectively. Those are really critical moves so it's unfortunate that I had to spend time looking up how to figure that out. I assume DSIII they'll finally have figured all of that out...

    Room for improvement:
I really wish that the characters had more tying them together. There's this dark deep thread holding everything together but I wish that choices you make can affect the wider world in subtle but poignant and crucial ways rather than just with individuals who you encounter. If done correctly (to my taste) this would ideally mirror the subtle and nuanced but understated threads of lore hidden in plain sight without really shoving all of it in your face and really give a more coherent sense of the world...

There are a lot of bosses and sub bosses all along the game and they never get to the point of being unfair or too easy.

The PvP in the game is great, easily the best of all soul series, including Demon's souls and Bloodborne. It is more friendly to learn and also allows you to start doing it after you are done with the game story, as you don't get locked out of invasions after a boss is dead, that was the case in the first dark souls. The mechanics are vastly improved in the pvp area as well, with more weapon options and spells and a lot of the weapons have special attacks that make them unique. It also features arenas for the players that rather avoid invading/being invaded but still want to engage in pvp.

    Its a must have game.

The game is an extension on the previous concepts of Dark Souls & Demon Souls. Probably the most obvious "negative" is that the world is no longer as interconnected as Dark Souls was. This is both due to having the ability to warp between bonfires from the get go, and the increased world size making the interconnect-Dark-Souls level design an impracticality. Ignoring the "world layout", the actual levels themselves, enemies, and atmosphere are spot on. Always something interesting to do and always having multiple paths open for progression. The combat & levelling mechanics have been given an overhaul and they are now super sweet. The changes to agility, poise, adaptability & two attribute required progression for certain stats means the early builds can vary greatly, and the impact on your ability to dodge, hit, and sustain in combat is noticeable as you level up. The PVE & PVP are now both balanced beautifully to encourage both players that enjoy PVE and Co-op, as well as those that want to do PVP. But no longer do you need separate characters for PVE and PVP, and can play the same character through to NG+++ due to the implementation of soul memory.
TLDR: If you enjoyed any aspect of Demon Souls or Dark Souls then you will love this game. Run flawlessly on my PC, I use the 360 gamepad (because you need to with this game). Yeah the PVP can suffer from lag issues, but that doesn't reduce the game from being at the very least a 9/10. Get it and love it. All builds are viable. All playstyles are viable. Basically the game is exceptional and probably the best game that will come out in 2014.

Ascetics for example - good of you want a sudden increase in difficulty and more loot, but bad because some cheesy items could be farmed limitlessly with minimal effort, eg Gower's ring. They also dampened my desire to actually go to NG+. Respeccing is a good idea, lifegems just made the game a lot easier. Seed of a tree of giants was a good idea, soul memory was so-so. Some bosses were extremely hard solo but stupid easy with a summon. Other bosses were just easy full stop. On the whole I would say the game was easier than its predecessor and not quite as good. But definitely still worth playing. Probably deserves an 8 but doesn't get it for reasons already explained and those reasons ruined any chance that this developer got any DLC sale off me. I haven't had any game breaking bugs so far and gameplay has been flowing as well as possible. A must try for any player.

That said, i still feel as if the designers either willfully messed up OR didn't know how to approach some very basic features. Like the confusing menus (you have to be in-game to map any button and out to play with the graphics settings)and the lack of a pause feature (it does nothing to lessen the difficulty and is really helpful because you don't have to constantly go in and out of the game, but that's just me). Also i felt as if the first game had a much better flow of the stages and story progression, i can't really say why that is.

In summation, if you take it for what it is, mold it to your suiting, you will certainly enjoy it.

Next a warning. DS2 is a controller based game. A lot of people complain about having to use one. Get over it, get an xbox controller. Some might argue that a pc game should have better keyboard and mouse controls. I have to ask why? Since when has PC gaming been strictly done using a keyboard and mouse? Have you ever played a flight simulator before? Are you saying controller based games have no place on PC's? (like fighting games, or platformers?) The developers crafted a game based around using a controller, they ported it much better than the first game (which in all honesty wasn't that bad, especially when tweaked).

Dark Souls 2 is more inviting to casual gamers than the previous games, but they didn't leave out the difficulty that the series is renowned for, it just unlocks later. To be honest, if anything, they added more content than ever before to achieve this.

If you are looking for a hard hack and slash controller based game look no farther, this defines it.

Hello everyone, I'm your average Joe gamer, who plays a bit of everything and I'm open minded for all games. However, after the stale port from the first Dark Souls game, I wouldn't even touch Dark Souls II with a grill fork. How did I obtain the game then? Well, my girlfriend and I was joking around and I somehow made a joke about wanting Dark Souls II one day. Well, 1 hour later I recieved a Steam gift from my girlfriend. I wasn't really too happy about and I was almost inclined to play it, as she had paid a great deal of money for it.

I went in the world of Dark Souls 2 with a negative perspective and I wasn't too happy about Dark Souls again letting me down on the lack of 'tutorial' in terms of key bindings. However I changed that rather quickly in the settings and got it setup as I like it. I began diving into the deep combat and I died countless times and became very frustrated, yet I wanted to try again after losing every souls I had obtained (the curreny of the game) which you lose upon death. However, when I finally succeded I felt as a god, no one could take me down, the satisfaction were... Immense. I have never felt such satisfaction by succeding in a game. Though there were times I wanted to quit, I began using the tools the game provided for players to help one another through co-op or messages (guidance) which players leave behind for others to use. A great implementation to the game. I dived even deeper in the game and soon I had played for about 10 hours and it felt like minutes. I began praising the art, the visuals and the dark mood of the game - even though the textures aren't state of the art, the game began to become pleasing to the eye. The puzzles came together I saw the whole picture. Dark Souls wasn't just a frustrationg pile of trash, it was a glourious piece of art, even though it's rough around the edges, it's still one of my favorite games ever played. It deserves 10 in my opinion, but staying objective it has to be a 9, as there are some things to improve upon. I highly recommend this game to every RPG fan who is tired of the lack of difficulty in their games.

It falls short in World-Structure and boss variety, but largely makes up for this by creating a beautiful atmosphere and perfect combat system. In response to many complaints, it really makes me upset that people are willing to give a game a "0-3" rating based on a single thing. Yes, I'll admit it is quite ridiculous that the prompts in game are not in keyboard/mouse layout. However this does not excuse as low of a rating as I'm seeing it get. I've had 0 issues playing with the keyboard and mouse, and changing button layouts is such a straight-forward concept you would have to play the game for 5 minutes and then give up to complain. I would expect it to take less than an hour to optimize the controls for your preference and then get used to those controls. One hour so you can enjoy a game that would probably take you 50+ hours to beat through once, and then replay an endless amount. It's simply childish and honestly laughable that people are so closed-minded that they can't figure out how to fix something that is right there in the options.

Just to summarize, the game exceeds its self as a sequel. People are simply dense and arrogant to fix a single problem they're having and base their first few moments of gameplay without really getting anywhere. Don't sit there and complain because you didn't take the time to fix a single problem. Almost every negative review I've seen has only complained about one problem. That would be the same as saying, the game is great overall but I don't think the graphics are very good: 2/10. Take a few moments to locate the source of the problem, and then fix it. I'll guess that 8 out of 10 of your problems can be fixed without any headache or effort. It is extremely childish to cry and whine about something that you on your own can fix if you would only put in the minuscule effort to address the problem at hand.

The previous Souls games weren't intended to be masochist games. The difficulty was not the main focus, and interviews with the director shows that. The director of Dark Souls 2 took a very different approach, and it shows in even the dialogue of the game.
In the first few cutscenes, the player is told "you're going to die and lose souls over and over again", it is almost like that is coming from the developers. This wasn't seen in the previous games.
The gameplay suffers from this too. The game tries way too hard to surprise you and punish you. with very predicable surprises at almost every single corner.
An example of this that is very evident is the first level of the game.
I'm not going to spoil it, but i'll just say that in the previous Souls games, the first levels were pretty good tutorials with fair enemies. It isn't like that in this one, you'll see what I mean if you play it.
The new mechanics the game throws at you are a different, fresh, new experience.
Stats are distributed differently, movement feels different, healing items are awful now, and enemies have different movesets. It's interesting to play, and in some aspects, much more difficult.
I was kind of worried this game would be a casualized version of the first, I can say that I'm not dissapointed.
    Onto the technical aspects:
The PC port is very good, a definite improvement over the first. Easy 1080p and 60 fps on an AMD 7850.
I can't judge the Mouse+Keyboard controls though, because I haven't tried, but honestly, who would? A controller is a must for these types of games.
Loading screens are almost non-existent just like the first
Also, Alt+F4 is beautiful, try it out when you play it, it saves your game, fades out and exits - A counter against people that will quit during PvP
Steamworks for this game is amazing! There is no "summoning failed" message like in the first, summoning and invading people are almost instant! The connectivity is nice and a great improvement over Games for Windows Live in the first Dark Souls.
Overall, I'd recommend Dark Souls 2.
It's decent, but I still like Demon's Souls the best.

This game is perfect for the gamer who doesn't need online games (though it's available and it's completely optional). This game reminded me how easy games have gotten these days. Dying can be extremely punishing in this game, so bring a helmet and nerves of steel. DS2 requires patience, persistence, and resolve. Don't buy this game if you're expecting some whimsical adventure through a dark world full of monsters and demons because you're not going to get that. The game play is good but requires timing and skill (though even with the most skilled hands you'll still get beat up and killed in the most unfair fashion even...so be prepared to deal with that lol).

After everything is said and done I recommend this game for those who are not quitters or casuals. The gamer who likes to brutalize themselves and still pick themselves back up and complete the task at hand.

this game get's a 9 because it's a well put together game and it's nice to see a title that really brings the skill back to the genre.

The graphics are suitable and set the game world's atmosphere perfectly. Even though the graphics could have been somewhat better, especially on PC, the game runs as smooth as butter; I haven't crashed or frozen or even stuttered once on my 60 hour (so far) trek throughout Drangleic.
Dark Souls II, like it's predecessor, has a wealth of content, in areas to explore; enemies to conquer; equipment to find and use, and play styles to suit your preferences. It also stays true to it's punishing nature, where it seems to try to put the player and enemies on a more level playing field, instead of the player being a walking army, taking on thousands without breaking a sweat, like many other games.
In my experience, in comparison to Dark Souls I, bosses do seem to be somewhat easier, at least in the early areas; but this does not mean they are not challenging! Oh no, they still pose a challenge to the unprepared, but even if they end up being easier than you'd expect, From Software still makes a great effort to make the bosses (or even normal enemies) look intimidating!
The game is designed to kill you, everything wants to kill you, and you will die, a lot. Much of the game is trial and error, so once you get used to how enemies fight, their attack patterns or spell uses, things become more manageable... but not easy!
Online play and interactions are a huge part of Dark Souls. Other players, as well as you, can leave helpful, pointless, or potentially dangerous messages all around the world, designed to help or hinder a player's progress. You can also leave a 'summon sign' on the ground around the world, allowing you to be summoned into another player's world as a Phantom to help them in their travels, or with a difficult boss... or both! For the more sinister players, there is the option to 'invade' another player's world, allowing you to enter their game as a Dark Spirit and try to kill them. Each of these features are supported by in-game-world 'Covenants' (somewhat like guilds, but not really). These provide certain bonuses for completing tasks appropriate for each Covenant. For example: One of the covenants is focused on Co-op, so for each successful summon, and defeat of a boss, in another player's world, earns you an item which you can use to further your Rank in that Covenant, and be rewarded with items!
The New Game+ feature adds even more to Dark Souls II (also just like Dark Souls I), with new items appearing throughout your second play-through, as well as certain enemies appearing in new places, and of course, increased difficulty. The NG+ feature (from what I've heard) can increase up to TEN times (the difficulty goes up each time too)! So if you really are some kind of crazy masochist, this game has it all!
Stop reading this, and buy it now!!

The first Dark souls game was amazing but, as we all know, it had terrible defects. The most important was the online aspect, with failing summonings and the pvp, laggy as hell. The second one, the technical aspect: 30 fps? C'mon!

But you know what? They fixed it! And I don't mean just an upgrade, I mean the online works perfect now. The pvp system is much more balanced and diversed.

The game runs at 60 fps and looks great, not as well as expected but much better than in consoles. And anyone knows that modding can help the game to look much more beautiful.

Oh, by the way. This game is not meant to be played with keyboard and mouse, get a controller. Why? Is not only due to the interface, with some upgrades for keyboard and mouse control, but also the gameplay. Don't nerf yourself and get a controller.

Now they use dedicated Server which brings a new Expirience in PvP and Coop, no backstabbing while lagging, no Damage without animation and plenty more Improvements.

So, as a big fan of Dark Souls, and Dark Souls 2, I'll give more extensive review that I can reply to anything I can if someone has a question.

    Short Review:
Despite some of the more negative reviews, this really is an amazing game, this coming from someone who put over 350+ hours in Dark Souls (Steam + Xbox 360), and a great addition to the Soul series. It is still somewhat of a console port, yes, the controls for PC aren't that amazing. But you can easily pick up a controller off Amazon or your local Gamestop (or something similar) for ~25 USD. The story is fantastic even the side stories are great , the graphics are fantastic, the gameplay is amazing, and I've already dropped 50+ hours into the game and I'm well into my way in NG+.

    Long Review:
I'll review this game on some key points I think are fair when it comes to a game like this, you can agree or disagree, whatevers fine.

    Controls:
Again, I will give some of the naysayers credit, it is a console port. The Key Bindings aren't amazing for PC, I have a friend who can use them, but they were hard to get used to, but if you played Dark Souls then this should be no surprise. There might be more support coming out later for PC key bindings, but I personally view this as a minor detail, seeing as you can buy a controller for the PC for ~25 USD.

    Graphics:
Simply put, it's a beautiful game and is top notch in graphics, it doesn't look amazing like ARMA 3 (google screen shots of that game, it's glorious) but the graphics are still very good and a big step up from it's console versions as well as Dark Souls for PC. There's little details they have in the game that really just put it above many others for me, and what really makes me love this games graphics.

    Sound:
The game sound, like the other Soul games, is great. The swords clanking, the WOOSH you hear when you parry someone, and the feeling you get when you hear that death sound from your enemies (or yourself, it is Dark Souls anyway) is unique and satisfying. The music is very fitting for every scene that there is music, and there's even some parts in the game where the ambiance goes above and beyond, and just immerses you.

    Story:
I won't give away any spoilers, but the story is very good and you actually have a lot more direction in the game then you did in Dark Souls, at the beginning you might be a little lost but after you talk to some people, and you start to figure out how the game is supposed to be going it gets awesome and you start to really get into the game and can lose track of time easily. You'll find that the story keeps you driven to see what happens next and wanting to progress.

    Gameplay:
The gameplay is, as you might think, very similar to a lot of monster fighting games of this nature. Obviously it's going to be dang near the exact same as Dark Souls, with honestly, only one or two changes coming to mind. Going from Dark Souls to Dark Souls 2, (for you Dark Souls players), the parrying is a little different, it's a little harder to parry, you don't get as many infinity frames, but you can get more with a stat (hint!), and Guard Break is now a little harder to get as it has another use, which you'll find out eventually.
    PvE:
The boss fights are all unique in their own way, some of the fights share similar traits that I've had my friends call "Lazy Design" but I personally don't see it too much, and just adds that much more challenge and I respect that in games. Each stat you might go with (Strength, Dexterity, Intellect, or Faith) is equal in their own way, though, I've been told that currently Dexterity is lacking at the moment, but there will probably some sort of fix in the near future.
    PvP:
I exclude PvP from this review, strictly because it's across all of the platforms that it pertains to. In short, as someone who has been a tank, caster, ranged, and melee (str, haven't done much with Dex), I can say that PvP is somewhat broken at the moment. You can search on YouTube for Dark Souls 2 PvP videos, some of the things that you encounter in this game can drive you crazy and really make you saying "HOW DID I DIE TO THAT???" (if you're like me anyway) With more skill with the game, comes better survivability through which any Dark Souls player knows that, so if you get killed by an invader, don't get discouraged, it happens and know that you can probably kill them when you've played a little more.
    In short, again for PvP:
Dark Magic is OP, and can 1 shot people
Rolling counters Dark Magic as well as staggering the caster.
Strength does a lot of damage.
Backstab "fishing" is harder to do in Dark Souls 2 then it was in Dark Souls, so don't worry about that too much. Just gotta watch out for parries and guard breaks.

    Overall:
This is an amazing game, and well worth the price tag, especially if you have a controller already. I strongly do recommend you use a controller for this game. If you don't have the money for a controller, than maybe hold off until you can get both.

The mouse movement is smooth and attacks/actions are crisp and feel ‘weighty’. The only problem is that the ‘instructions’ the game provides, especially in the tutorial zone, are all console-commands, making learning how to play a little tedious at first. But as YouTube offers numerous ‘getting started’ guides, this is not a big problem.
The game masters atmosphere like no other, presenting a bleak and emotionally crushing fantasy world that looks as though it has reached the end of a very long history and is crumbling before time. The characters are well voice acted, the dialogue provided is excellent given the genre and effect the designers were going for and above all, it all comes together to form a deep and often surprising gaming experience. Combat is exceptional and challenging. Level design is simply inspired!
The game is hard but with patience you can always master its challenges. Remember one thing! Anyone who gave this game a rating below 7 (which is the lowest score even the most critical reviewer could legitimately justify) is not being a good reviewer. Dark Souls II was one of the best action adventure games I've ever played. I don't consider it an RPG but that doesn't make it any less fantastic. The story involves you from beginning to the end and the visuals and character modeling is stunning, specially on PC. Combat never gets dull and the enemies are never the same in two different areas. The ending makes you think about why you did all that, just to sit on a throne locked in a cave? Dark Souls II shows many hollow concepts of life and it has a deep and meaningful narrative. It's difficult, sometimes frustratingly so, but not in an unfair way. The world is incredibly well designed, and the game never holds your hand through anything. As you progress you get actually feel like you've accomplished something, and when you fail (which you will -- a lot) you need to exercise patience and sound strategy to overcome. I wish every game I purchased played out like that. The class creation system is deep and allows for tons of possibilities (kinda like how Blizzard games used to be before they determined everyone was too stupid to put points into attributes by themselves). And da 30+ boss fights and creature variation?... Awesome. Nearly everything about this game is excellent, reminds me of how action RPG's used to be and should be.

Massive improvements have been made compared to the dark souls 1 pc port. honest kb and mouse support. As well as solid graphics options in game. But the other element that makes it much better is the better integration of social features.

The summon system is pivotal for a smooth play experience and is a lot of fun. Over all the story is the same minimalist breadcrumb system from ds1, but the gameplay is even crisper/sharper than it was before.

More iframes (invincibility frames) have been removed so more intricate and skillful dodging is required to be able to fight enemies. As well as a strong enemy variety and well animated/telegraphed attacks allow you to see actual tactics being used.

Enemies will charge at you when they see you healing, some of them can heal, and others can be baited into putting up their shield (if they have one) just by pulling out a ranged weapon.

Yes, it's difficult. Yes, it will eat your soul. Yes, this game is the Devil's son and probably the next prince of darkness.

But it is so beautiful, in a way I cannot fully comprehend. The hidden lore, the very good gameplay, the style of the bosses and the world. They will win (and kill) you.

Dark Souls 2, when compared to its predecessor, falls slightly short. Furthermore, the player is seldom rewarded for exploration, often only receiving junk after making a tricky jump that took 20 or so attempts.

There are major improvements, however, when it comes to the UI and PVP/co-oping with a friend. Your summoned allies can heal themselves via estus flasks and lifegems, so it's much easier to run through an area with a buddy. For this reason, among others, the game is much easier than its predecessor. It seems that From Software sacrificed quality for quantity, as there are a whopping 27 bosses in the game but none are very memorable or very challenging. Even the optional Ancient Dragon, often deemed the hardest boss in the game, can be cheesed. Once you learn how to dodge a bosses attacks and where your window is for a counter attack, nothing is really that difficult. Due to the surplus of healing items in the game, you are able to take a hit or two from a boss, back off, pop a lifegem, wait a few seconds while dodging attacks, then reengage.

Overall, the game is far superior to most other games on the market. I would definitely recommend it. Just be warned that if you're expecting something identical to DS1, you may be a bit disappointed.

If you liked Dark Souls you will also like Dark Souls 2. Problems with PC version/game are:

    1. You will have to spend some time learning controls because everything in tutorial is explained in gamepad buttons. (if you have gamepad this won't be an issue) 2. Not much of PvP available before NG+ (coop mechanics are really awesome, and work well) 3. Many levels and bosses are recycled

There are definitely some differences in Dark Souls II when compared to the first one -- that's a given. But I've sunk 288 hours into this game (according to Steam) before finally growing tired of it. It is an innately fun, frantic game, and the only reason I've grown tired of it is that I've started to memorize all the tricks and traps in every part of the game.

Back on topic. This game is hard. This game is fun. This game will knock you over and then kick you when you're down, and you will love it even more. I used a wired Xbox 360 controller, and everything felt very smooth and responsive. The combat was fluid. The music was decent. The story, like the previous games, was a little... strange? off? ...but the game was never really about the story.

My only serious complaint is that pvp is spotty. The hitboxes for many of the weapons are significantly larger than they really should be, and players sometimes manage to lag-teleport behind you for a backstab, despite whatever you try to do.

The only technical issue is the crashing upon start up, which still happens sometimes for me. But what Souls fan cares about that when the game itself is beautiful and fun to play.

Even the main story by itself will take you about 50 to 60 hours to beat, and even more if you explore hours for items, covenants, and etc. Does it sound like TOO much? Guess what? It's not! DKS2 is an amazing, unforgettable experience with only a few flaws holding it back from being one of the best games on the PS3 and X360. The difficulty of this series is the main eye-opener. It presents tough but fair combat and punishes you for every tiny mistake. Yet still, DKS2 remains a fun game. You have to time every block and dodge correctly, otherwise you may pay with your life. And that sounds brutal. Believe when I say it though, you can overcome any challenge the game throws at you, it just takes time and patience. One new addition of the game is that every time you die, you lose a little bit of your health. However, it can be prevented by using a Human Effigy. It is still a hardcore feature, though. There are 2 ways to approach the combat in this game: Ranged (ex: sorceries, hexes, pyromancies, etc) and Melee (ex: blades, axes, spear, etc). I highly recommend starting out with melee if this is your first Souls game. I've played both, and each class is overall pretty balanced because you still have to block or dodge the enemies' moves. I love how the Souls games utilize multiplayer so differently. You can't just invite people to a game, but you can summon people with the signs. You can also leave messages and bloodstains with give other players great hints. And then there's the evil part: people can invade and kill you. Don't worry, though. You won't encounter many of them this time around. Have I forgot to talk about the graphics? They are amazing, too! It perfectly fits the atmosphere of the game. In Dark Souls 1, the bosses were a constant highlight. Here, there are alot. Most of them aren't extremely hard, though. I remember a few that only took me under 5 tries to beat. Their designs are psychotic and awesome to add. Now we come to the part when we talk about the flaws. At times, you won't always be able to trust the mechanics. There's gonna be many attacks that really shouldn't have connected, and sometimes if you want to raise your shield up, it's not exactly going to. Because of this, I felt like FromSoftware was too focused on making it hard in some points rather than truly accurate. Another disappointment is that the whole world isn't actually connected like in Dark Souls 1. It was so unique finding shortcuts to other areas previously, and it's sad that it's not here. However, Dark Souls 2 is worth every penny if your a fan. It's possible to sink so many hours here. It perfectly combines quantity and quality. If you're a newcomer, there's no better place to start than here. It is worth $60. Expand

The game is fantastic, hard, rewarding, full of secret areas to explore and covenants to join.
