Awesome game if you're a fan of visual novels such as the Ace Attorney series, with which it has quite a few similarities. Before I start my review, I would like to say that this game deserves a 9 or 10 for its amazing story, but I am only able to give it an 8 because the game itself is just too ridiculously easy.

Do not expect deep gameplay. The game starts off by fooling you into believing that it is an escape-the-room type of game, but in reality it is no more than a visual novel. Those who watch the anime or read the manga may enjoy this game more.

    STORY
In essence, Danganronpa is a murder mystery series where a score of students find themselves kidnapped and locked securely inside a high school facility. A demonic teddy bear shows up to haunt them, claiming that the only way they'll be allowed to leave is if they murder someone. He provides them with motives to force them into committing murder, all for the sake of entertainment.

Your role in the game is to follow through the story and solve the murders that take place. A trial is held after each murder to determine who the culprit is, and to "punish" them if they are found guilty.

The game starts off somewhat boring and tedious to play through, but once you're halfway in, the story becomes suspenseful and really absorbs you into the game. The game really shines once you approach the climax, since that's the part of the game that compels you to like the series and to want to play the sequels.

    GAMEPLAY
This game plays likes a point-and-click game where you explore to gather clues and talk to the other students to hear what they have to say. Everyday, you can spend some time with people and give them gifts to build up your relationship with them.

For the most part, this game is a "left-click simulator." You're pretty much left-clicking 90% of the time. Luckily, the game provides an "Auto" feature which progresses through the dialogue automatically, so feel free to grab a snack or drink and watch as the plot unfolds automatically.

After a murder takes place and a trial is held, the characters provide their opinions on the events that unraveled prior to the murder, and you try to find inconsistencies. Sometimes they are subtle and hard to detect, so you have to take a trial-and-error approach.

Eventually, the students reach a verdict on who is guilty and then you play a mini-game where you put all the pieces of the puzzle together in order to summarize the events of the murder. It is the most interesting part of the game as it really tests your awareness of what happened throughout the act. You can't just luck through this part without at least a bit of thought.

You are given unlimited attempts to beat the trial and plenty of time to do so. The ability to retry after failing is very forgiving since you simply continue from where you failed. I found this too easy and pointless, since if you can just try again, there's no reason to fail the player in the first place.

Sometimes you may feel inclined to read a guide just to progress on parts that are just downright confusing. That's fine; do so. Don't waste too much time during the trial. Dragging on the trial will only frustrate you, and sometimes a solution makes no sense whatever, which will only waste your time guessing.

    "SCHOOL MODE"
Building up relationships doesn't actually alter the plot, which is disappointing. All it rewards you is some background story for the character and a "star" for achievement purposes. You can do whatever you like with the relationships and it won't matter in the end since the script has been set in stone.

In order to get all of the stars, you have to play "School Mode" after you've beaten the main game. It's essentially a mode that focuses on building relationships with all of the characters, none of which die in this mode. It's impossible to build up every single character's relationship in one playthrough, so you need to play it several times.

It's a tedious game mode that doesn't involve any exploration or mystery solving, and the conversations are all repeats. It's an oversimplified dating sim that gets boring really quickly. Unless you absolutely loved some of the characters, I highly suggest skipping it and moving onto the next game. It's a mindless grind that takes several hours to complete.

If I were to give this mode a rating, I'd have to give it a 3/10. It's a mindless waste of time.

    SUMMARY
A murder mystery visual novel jam packed with story and dialogue and drawn in a unique style. What looks to be a simple game easily ends up giving you at least 20 hours of story as time flies by.

The gameplay might not have been the greatest and had many cheesy childish moments, but the story was brilliant. School Mode was unfortunately mundane and unrewarding.

I give this game a borderline 8 although the story probably deserves more. The voice acting in English was laughable, but the art has unique aesthetic value and the game is enjoyable when played without high expectations.

While it's not nearly as well designed or intricate as something like Ace Attorney, the mysteries aren't half bad. But more importantly, it's just so anime that I couldn't help falling in love with it.

Un sobresaliente juego de genero novela, destacándose por su historia y desarrollo de personajes, lo único malo es que los juicios son un poco fáciles pero siempre te dejaran pensando en cada caso en ''¿Cómo ocurrió esto ?'' y preguntas así.

I'm not a fan of Visual Novels but Danganronpa was surprisingly good.
I've beaten the main story in around 25 hours in a 3 days time frame.

I've seen a few complaints that "you already know you're gonna live because the game's linear, so it's not really worth playing". There's more to it than just 'your' survival and not everyone in the game will necessarily die (or live). There are many plot-twists worth playing for, and these are further expounded on in DR2.

    Emotional engagement: excellent
Dialogs:generally very goods and funny when between characters, despite a lack of subtlety in description and reaction of your character. Do not expect a lot of intelligence outside the trials however ,and expect most arguments to be pointless and devoid of logic.
Characters design and coherence: inconsistent ,some characters are very unsubtle and saved only by the catchy ambiance and funny dialogs, but the good ones are more than sufficient and few game prompted so much empathy for the characters out of me, thanks to the class trials and murders.
Realism,world-building and coherence: Bad everywhere outside of class trials, some mistranslation worsen the problem, and some characters just seem omniscient and can only be beaten trough scenaristic laxism.
Shock value is favored over logic . But the game being primarily focused on the characters, theirs deaths and trials(which are logically almost irreproachable),it shouldn't be taken as a serious handicap, even if you hate plot-holes.

It's similar to Ace Attorney but what I like more about Danganronpa is that the person who dies and the person who you have to prove is guilty are all people that you're much more attached to. Danganronpa is essentially a killing game. The headmaster is a robotic bear named Monokuma who is being controlled by a mastermind hidden within the school. 15 students with “ultimate” abilities are trapped in a school with the only way of escape being to kill a fellow student and not get caught. The people who didn't kill have to investigate the murder and find out who's the "blackened". If they guess right they all survive except for the killer. If they guess wrong everyone but the killer dies. The main hook of Danganronpa are the characters. I got really invested in almost every character. It's so interesting to see how characters like Byakuya and Kyoko interact. There are antagonist like characters besides Monokuma, specifically Byakuya. Byakuya is the worst antagonist in the series. I'm not saying he's a bad character, it's just he's not a bad enough character. He was mainly the antagonist in chapter 2 but in almost all other chapters he'd mostly help you. Besides Byakuya, Kyoko was another major character. She was one of my favorites and she is basically the protagonist's partner. Oh speaking of the protagonist. Makoto is the protagonist here and he is basic and that's his entire personality. He's not interesting at all but that's kind of what the developers wanted to achieve. Besides the major characters there are a bunch of small ones that I love and add a lot to the story. Danganronpa has a super interesting and engaging story. You slowly piece together the mystery at hand as the game continues. Danganronpa is split up into three parts. Part one being free times. You use this time to get to know a character of your choice. It is optional but I don't know how you could go through this game without using free time. It allows you to get more attached to the characters which makes their death much more meaningful. Part two is the investigation. This part happens right after a character is murdered. You investigate the crime scene and gather evidence to use in part three. Part three is the class trial. The class trial is the meat of the game. This is where you find out who the blackened is. People talk about the case and what they're saying goes flying on screen. Certain words will be yellow. These words are possible contradictions. If you shoot a yellow word with a piece of evidence that contradicts it the word shatters and you all go back to a conversation. Doing this is really satisfying and finding a contradiction in someone's statement can sometimes be actually hard. The actual cases are also interesting. They are always fun to solve and I love how you can create your own theory on who did it before the class trial even begins. It's really sad to see your favorite character get to be the blackened. Once a character is the blackened they have to go through an execution that has to do with their particular ultimate ability. When you take the tense atmosphere of the deadly school and the gory executions you could say this is a horror game. Certain parts had me more terrified than other actual horror games. I have two main problems with Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc. Number One after chapter 3 the game starts to lose steam, only one more main character dies so being stuck with basically the same characters for three chapters straight kinda sucks. Number two there were a few instances where dialogue was pointless. I know not every conversation will be an impactful one but certain moments just felt like they dragged on for a bit too long and I just wanted to get to the more interesting stuff. I haven't said enough about Danganronpa. It's an amazing murder mystery with great writing and amazing characters. Trigger Happy Havoc has made me laugh and cry. With only a few minor issues Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc is one of the best visual novels of all time. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A great concept but in my opinion the weakest game in the series the ending is probably the least hard hitting and the gameplay in the trials is more boring than in the other games, in the case where celestial kills hifumi and taka I believe it is plainly obvious that it is her the reason this is so bad is the way she acts plus the fact that throughout the game she is built up to be the “greatest liar” and that she could fool anyone. However it’s still a strong game and very fun to play due to the unique and fun gameplay Expand

A great emersive story filled with plot twists and character development, an addicting story you wouldn't be able to stop, getting better and better with each chapter until it finishes with a great finale!!!(the better of the 2 endings). I highly recommend this hidden masterpiece.

Stellar game that has stuck with me even after completing it; wonderful mysteries, characters, as well as music. There’s nothing quite as exciting as the class trials.

This game also has a BANGING soundtrack. Makes all the more enjoyable. Overall, i would say this game is very much worth the 20 dollars it costs, especially if you're into murder mysteries/visual novels, or both!

    I'd give this game a 9/10

It is just a really unique experience unlike anything that I have played before. There are points where I was shocked by what was going on and throughout the game I was trying to figure out what was happening. Just when I thought I knew what was going on I would find out that I was completely wrong. The game has a school life, courtroom and investigation aspect along with a bit of building relationships with your classmates. I would have loved to have seen the relationship building and interacting with your classmates fleshed out a bit more. The game ran really well for me with no performance issues and kept me invested in it the entire time. when I finished the game I had around 36 hours in game so it's pretty good length wise as well. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and look forward to playing the 2nd game. Expand

    I'm gonna make it short.
Played this game on Vita release, so I based my rating out of that. If you like visual-novels, good narration, cool morbid atmospheres and investigations, you might like this game.
If you have a laptop, definitely take the laptop with you in bed and play this game in the dark with a headset on, and enjoy diving into this twisted ( japanese ) story.

Trigger Happy Havoc is the first release of the franchise. The story centers around Makoto, a student who has been selected to access Hope's Peak Academy, a school where only the best of the best can enter. The school life of Makoto will take a sudden twist when him and 15 other students from the academy get forced into a killing game, having to decide between killing someone and not getting caught, or spending your whole life inside the school.

The main thing I can highlight about THH is the atmosphere. This game has the best setting in all of the franchise. This is the only release where you actually feel you are trapped. There is no exit to the outside; you are locked in there, surviving until you either kill or get killed.

When a murder takes place, an investigation starts. In this segment you must discover the evidences and clues left behind by the murderer. Once the investigation finishes, the real deal starts. The Class Trial takes place. The Class Trials are the main focus of the Danganronpa series. In them, you and your school fellows must point out the culprit. If you do so, the culprit gets murdered. If you don't, everyone BESIDES the culprit gets killed. Therefore, you must be suspicious of everyone. The gameplay in Class Trials consist of multiple minigames like a hangman and a rhythm-game. It's the worst gameplay in the series but it set the bases for the other releases.

During Free Time, you can do what a normal high school student would: hang out with friends. Completing a student's route will grant you a skill for Class Trials. You can also go to sleep if you prefer that over socializing.

Overall THH excels in atmosphere, has good moments throughout the story and is held back a bit by it's rough gameplay.

An incredible story that had me at every twist and turn. One of the best written villains in gaming (until the end) and a environment oozing with charm.

Only reason it’s a 9 instead of a ten is Alter Ego and his human counterpart and the unnecessary swearing was a constant immersion breaker as it was just the worst.

The film turned out to be a hit and a precursor to a new type of gameplay in computer games with the above-mentioned title. The original minecraft mode is considered to be the first game of this type    ,, hunger games", which, however, refers to a completely different novel, nevertheless still drawing its roots from the Japanese work. Few, however, realize that the first game operating on this principle was also the Japanese Visual Novel entitled "Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc" created by Spike Chunsoft in 2010. It tells the story of the so-called "Hope's Peak Academy", an elite high school funded by the Japanese government. To be able to attend this facility, each student must meet 2 requirements: attend high school and be the best in their field. So during the game we can get to know such characters as a ultimate swimmer, ultimate baseball player or a ultimate school idol. The main character, Makoto Naegi, is ... a ultimate school lucky guy, an ordinary student who got into this school as a result of a lottery. Despite his doubts, the hero decides to attend school, but as soon as he crosses its threshold... he loses consciousness. The next scene takes place in a classroom, the windows are boarded up with metal plates and the only exit is through an armored door that can’t be opened. There, the player gets acquainted with other students who are put in the same situation as him. Right after that, the radio is turned on and everyone is called to the gym. There they meet a monokume - mechanical bear who introduces himself as the school's principal and announces that everyone will have to stay in the building until the end of their days. However, if someone wants to escape, there is one way to do it... You have to kill another student in such a way that others cannot discover who did it. If the would-be murderer succeeds, he goes free and everyone else is executed, but if the other students discover the murderer's identity, he is killed and the game continues. The murders, and even more so the executions, are extremely phenomenal and decorated with black humor by Kazutak Kodaka - the director. In addition to the mystery of the crime itself, the main thread is the mystery of the school: why the heroes were imprisoned there, how they can get out of it and most importantly: who is monokuma. The gameplay of each of the 3 parts is divided into 3 segments: freetime, during which you can freely explore the school, talk to other students, build relationships and explore the area, investigation, i.e. the time between the discovery of the body by at least 3 people and the start of the so-called. "Class Trial", and the class trial itself, where, thanks to the collected evidence, you need to accurately identify the perpetrator. Expanding the thought of the class trial: when the player manages to collect all the evidence, an alarm sounds and students are directed to the elevator, which takes them to the underground courtroom there, standing in a circle, they debate among themselves who could have done it, then the gameplay is enriched with basic point and click, a game of hangman, a simple rhythm game where the main character argues with another student, and "The Ending Argument" - a puzzle in comic book character during which the player must sort out the events. As for the very reasons for these killings, it is not just a desire to come to light. During each freetime, the game master gives the students more and more absurd motives for wanting to kill. Each subsequent part offers something different: characters, murders, mini-games and ... endings. The ending of the first and second parts of danganropa goes beyond all the usual thriller patterns. Even though I haven't played Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony yet, I've heard many times that the final plot twist is something that can't be called an ending. And it was because of the ending that the third part divided the players so much. Expand

Personally, I feel there is around one or two weak points:
You feel like you are trapped, and just waiting for something to happen. I was honestly sleeping to skip free time events.
After the first couple of trials, it gets repetitive without anything
Other than that, I rank this a solid 9/10.
