The graphics are amazing, but the game play is no different than any other FPS released over the last couple of years. Is anyone else getting tired of playing the same game just repackaged and sold as something else?

Looks nice, but other than that it's a generic shooter with a couple of interesting features that are badly implemented. Although the game was obviously rushed, I struggle to imagine what could possibly have prompted such a pathetic ending, which kicks you out of the game just as it looks like it's about to get interesting. Overall I say don't believe the hype. This game is fun but it gets boring very fast. The only thing that stops you from regretting buying it is the awesome map editor it comes with. Expand

Unbelievably, Crytek has not pandered to the console generation crowd. This is a pure PC FPS in the finest tradition of Far Cry, Stalker, Rainbow Six, Half life, and even Doom. The shooting is hard. If you aren't aiming properly you are going to miss at medium-long ranges. That's what's happening with people that claim it takes a whole clip to take down an enemy. Out of every ten rounds wildly sprayed about will 5 actually hit (probably in the legs and arms), and chances are a silencer is being used, and silencers halve the weapon damage at close range and completely eliminating it at long range. If you want to take down soldiers with COD speed, you need to remove your silencer, go prone, and preferably attach a scope. Then switch to single shot and use maximum strength for good measure to steady your aim. Oh yeah and if your target is moving you have to lead to account for the fact the game models bullet travel time. It's a little more complicated than the run and gun you usually see, and I applaud Crytek for including great feeling shooting mechanics. The AI here sets the bar for all other shooters to come. The sense that you are fighting coordinated enemy squads which flank, retreat and lay down suppressive fire is not reviled anywhere else. By comparison the other big FPS released recently doesn't even seem to do anything but suicide rush. Sure there are bugs, but on Delta prepare to be outsmarted and outfought on a fair basis - you never feel the AI is cheating. The suit powers are amazingly well balanced and supremely useful. Using the mouse button menu to switch powers was a stroke of genius. There is nothing like using maximum speed to run up to a soldier, grab him, and use max strength you throw him off a cliff. Pure unadulterated awesome sauce. The linear sections of the endgame perhaps don't have the sense of gameplay innovation that the first 2/3rds do, but this is made up with some incredible environments and enemies which I don't want to spoil. Storywise . . . well it's no HL2 or Stalker, and it never claimed to be. The story is unpretentious, workmanlike and does its job motivating you and keeping you on track. The only other game in recent memory that comes close to Crysis is Stalker, with its open environments and incredible atmosphere. Both are masterpieces, but Stalker's initial bugs hold it back from being my GOTY pick. Ultimately, as others have stated, Crysis like no other game offers you a blank canvas on which you can paint your unique brand of mayhem and destruction. With Crysis your creativity is the limiting factor. Expand

I agree with one comment that the combatants seem a bit too clairvoyant sometimes and can spot and shoot you through thick brush from 100 meters away, but can't seem to find you on the other side of a building. The nanosuit is innovative, but frustrating. The speed boost is perplexingly short and the inadequate amount of charge the suit has makes multitasking with the suit enhancements impossible. The disadvantages implemented for certain advantages are nonsensical. Silencing a weapon makes it ridiculously impotent and is hardly realistic. Running the game is a challenge as well, but the flexibility of the video settings can make for a playable mode for a decent system. For my FX55, 2GB RAM, 8800GTS I run at 1600x1200, no AA, all medium settings and manage only about 15-30 FPS. Running AA at any resolution greatly reduces the framerate. But overall, this game is very addictive and worth the buy, especially considering the rarity of non-linear shooters. Expand

Compare this with COD4 where the environment is largely urban, the draw distance therefore much shorter. Unfortunately the game does not live up to its true potential on DX9, and is hampered by the recognized performance issues of Vista if running on DX10. Be wary of reviews moaning about graphics issues, render problems etc, on a properly specced, drivered machine, the game runs very clean, surprisingly so. Crysis has the fun of full control of every combat encounter, reminiscent of the potential of Deus Ex 1, well engineered, engaging fire fights (if you choose to play them as such), and finally outstanding eye candy throughout. Graphics are jaw-dropping, gameplay is fluid and satisfying, and the game is actually engaging in the sense that you'll get into your on-screen character's skin and feel the rush of sneaking up to the enemy in complete silence, all senses wide awake. The sound is also unrivalled, with very sharp use of muffling and echo that makes it all totally immersive. I had to pause the game at one particular point : I had just fired a rocket at a distant helicopter from a ledge, jumped down and landed in a small pond. The very moment I went underwater, my teammates' chatter was muted but I could still hear the muffled gunfire and most importantly, the loud rumble of that damn helicopter blowing up. I was constantly relying on sound cues to track enemies and map my surroundings. Finally the game itself flowed gracefully from one scene to the next. It was almost Halo-like in its pace and carefully dosed excitement. I only have one point of criticism and that is the little interlude in the alien ship, floating in a disorienting anti-gravity hell overfilled with annoying jellyfish-like beasties. That part felt very stressful and out of place, but it only made the escape that much more liberating. Overall, it's the most fun I've had in a long time, and the first FPS I've played through in one sitting since Quake 2. Expand

The gameplay is lousy, the story is non existent, and there are so many blatant ripoffs of other games in it, that its basically nothing but a showcase for CryTek's artiistic flair. It is open-ended, it can be played in any number of fashions, be it stealth mode, or run and gun, and above all else, it's fun. The story may be cliched, but executed very nicely nonetheless. Really, nothing much different than how HL2, Halo, or any other number of FPS games stories have played out. So if we are going to fault Crysis for that, then get in line and start docking points for the rest of those games too. The AI is something else people may take issue with, but please name me one game, just one game, of this caliber, of this level of technical brilliance, this OPEN-ENDED, that has AI which supercedes this. People can't, and yet they have this unrealistic expectation when it comes to Crysis. I guess that's because it's the most realistic looking game of all time, the best physics of all time, and if I may be so bold, the 5.1 surround sound also sounds very immersive as well, so perhaps the AI may be lacking in light of these other achievements, but even then, it's better than any AI to date for a game of this type/scale. You can play this game anyway you like a lone wolf stealth character or a guns a blazing Rambo Style badass. In the late game they introduce Alien critters which honestly we could of down without the no grav situations are really cool but the game then quickily becomes CoD4 not a bad thing but with the total amount of freedom Crytek gives you in the first 2/3rds of the game it is a let down . Also all of the 0's im assuming are from console fanboys who want the game to fail the lowest score a sane person could give this game would be a 7 maybe a 6. In the end you don't have to listen to any reviewers score of Crysis that doesn't really matter just download the demo which is the well best described as the first level giving you an introduction to the game, the cheesy as hell story, and amazing gameplay. My problem is not that I can't run it on high settings, but that medium settings look awful. Some of the textures look really poor but the worst thing for me is the insane amount of aliasing. Jaggies really spoil games for me and Crysis is full of them unless you have the hardware to turn AA on. Additionally, it gives me an average framerate only of around 20fps. Now, I'm not just complaining because someone made a game that I can't play as it was meant to be played, but i know that my PC is capable of more than this. I can run COD4 with all the graphics settings cranked up to full and it runs like a dream and looks beautiful, averaging about 45fps. On top of that, I didn't see any need for any suit abilities besides armor at that point - there's no running from the flying aliens, you certainly can't punch them, and you're defending objectives most of the time, so cloaking doesn't help. This game is not 100% original, it has similarities with a lot of FPS games out there. The story and graphics and gameplay all come together like a halflife halo hybrid, which is totally cool, because those are the top standars for FPS right now. I found that it was a little hard to get into this game at first, because I did not understand what was going on at first and because the game is rather difficult at first. The level design is still cleverly linear, however never seems to feel that way, giving you insane amount of choice on how you tackle objectives. Once you get past the overwhelming sense of openness, and instead focus on achieving your goal instead of trying to explore everything first, you'll be set for some very intense action. I definitely see myself playing through multiple times to try different approaches to situations. Of course, everything has already been said about the graphics. However, if you find you are struggling running it at anything less then High, i suggest you just play a diffrent game, and wait for the console release as you'll definitely be missing alot of what makes this game so immersing. No mid-end gaming rig can run this on maximum settings at the moment, however if you are fortunate to have a Quad Core based system, and perhaps a new 8800 GT (or two) the game will play very smoothly at high settings. I've even tweaked some more features that are only available in the maximum settings, such as sunshafts, color grading, parallax occlusion mapping, and SSAO (something to do with adding soft shading around objects) which add ALOT of depth to the games graphics. With these enabled, Its the first true next-gen looking game. Finally, the multilayer seems very in depth, and objective based, and makes the recent Quake Wars look like Team Fortress 1. I'm looking forward to playing some more. Anyone giving this game a score below 7 has either not played it or does not have a machine to do it justice. ... Now if Far Cry 2 is half as good as this. This game is fun, but it does have problems. And since everyone else doesn't like to mention them, I will. 1. The sheer number of enemies and the limited number of approaches you can take to deal with them. Basically, the game asks you "Can you kill these 5 Koreans?" "You can? "5 Koreans dressed in black? In white? With gold chains?" You see where I'm going with this. Sooner rather than later, you yearn for something else other than taking care of the same old 5 Koreans. Unfortunately, it takes a very long time for this to happen, and by then there's only an hour of the game left. 2. The bugs. There are numeous bugs. At one point I managed to split in two, with the game rendering 4 arms, legs and two weapons. In another incident, a Korean walked past a crate, bumped his hip and fell over dead. Unfortunately, minutes later so did I. So avoid the crates! They may sit there looking all woody and innocent, but they're cold-blooded killers! 3. You can beat the game by using cheesy tacitcs, like exploiting your cloak, as I did. Run right up to a guy with cloak on, switch to speed (so you regen energy), head-shot him and immediately cloak again. If you balance your health with your energy (hint: cloaking makes health increase, energy decrease, and speed is the opposite), you can run into a room full of enemies and take them all out with impunity. Well, impunity and the odd quick re-load. However, since killing the same old 5 Koreans got a bit dull, no matter how I did it, I used cloak and speed to bypass many fights altogether. It's not like I was missing anything that I hadn't done 50 times already. 4. WAY WAY TOO SHORT! (after you finish with the 5,000 Koreans) Just as the game was picking up, it ends. Well, boo. In total, I played one whole evening and a couple hours the next. And that's your lot, until the sequel. There will be a sequel, becuase the ending concludes nothing story-wise. Now If you just bought an expensive new gfx card, you'll probably want to give Crysis 10/10. After all, you've got to justify your investment. But seriously guys and gals, this isn't game of the year material. Engine of the year - sure I'll be happy to give it that - but not GOTY. Oh, almost missed something... 6. Re-spawning Koreans. Unarmored enemies shrugging off half a dozen assault rifle rounds is particularly annoying, as is their sporadic X-Ray vision. On the one hand, it's still kind of fun. On the other, it's nothing we haven't seen before and not really worth your time unless you're gagging for another bog-standard shooter. So, a 5 sounds about right. Expand

The physics are good, they only have problems if you put them on low settings, there is even some foliage response to character model. The suit idea is somewhat novel because you only really utilize two of the four options. Speed and strength are mostly obstical clearing related, or not used at all. I found the first two thirds of this game involving and satisfying, and beginning to learn how to milk the best from the weapons and nanosuit makes you feel genuinely invincible at times. I would consider myself a skilled player and am not finding delta setting too hard (having completed on Hard) so I think Crytek have gone for a good difficulty balance - there are few 'throw eveything at you' moments in this one. I like the guns, I like the explosions and hell I even like the graphics (set on low due to my poor little CPU). Getting to take out bad guys with AA guns is pretty rock and roll too. The wide-open levels mean you can take set-pieces in manby ways, sniping enemies at distance, or stealthing in behind them and chucking a grenade into the midst. There's plenty of raw flying-lead action, though the adrenaline level will vary hugely dependent on how you choose to play the game. But then, something odd happens.. Suddenly and inexplicably in the last third of the game, the fun literally plummets away in a matter of moments.... from challenging, interactive and intellectually rewarding gameplay, you are plunged into the most deadening, challengeless drudgery imaginable. Take the 'spaceship' sequence from 'prey' and make it even longer, more boring and confusing and you are there. The scenery does change, and there are one or two more decent gun battles, but by this time the damage is done - crytek have decided that the last few parts of the game will involve playing the game from vehicles that only a robin reliant owner would find exciting, and your enemies are now drab, idiotic aliens that, in indoor environments will pretty much sit there and let you shoot them (yes even on Hard). The tactics, excellent enemy AI and mixture of stealth and frenetic blasting is finally replaced by a linear walk-and-shotgun affair with an ending that feels like a 3D representation of something I played on the Commodore 64 about 20 years ago. And I'm not talking Chuckie Egg or something good - we're talking free-with-the-computer level. Of course I had to get my moneysworth and finish the damn thing, which after a few tries and a fair bit of boredom later, was all done, the ending sequence doing little more than using a cliche to set us up for Crysis 2. The first part of the game lives up to the promises, its just a shame Crytek didnt sack whoever thought the part of the game was a good idea. Hopefully the patch will fix a dew bugs and make the graphics smoother, and there is definitely replay value in the earlier levels - but this IS NOT the world-beating mega-game that we have been marketed so carefully for the last go knows how long. Weapons - All the weapons look, sounded, and just performed amazingly. I would've liked a bit more variety, maybe another pistol maybe a melee knife or something else but thats for modders to do, storywise all the weapons fit in well. Ending - I would've enjoyed another 10 hours of gameplay if need be rather then the ending I got. The ending was probably the weakest point to me, mostly because it was an open ending and chances are I'll have to wait 2 years for the next game. OVERALL - This is a great game for any FPS fan out there. The single player campaign is lengthy and fun, a bit linear but also plenty of room to play with awesome weapons and suit powers. Multiplayers a bit tacked on with little modes but when Sandbox2 bugs are fixed and modders come out of the woodworks this engine I'm sure will be amazing! (SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW)
The first half/two thirds of the game, when you're fighting the NK forces is really, really good. Superb gunplay, excellent environment and there is so much fun to be had with explosives. Never before have I had such fun by blowing up buildings, or blowing up anything, really. Explosions Is one thing Crysis does REALLY well, and not just in the graphical department. The start of the war (destroying the AAA in the harbour is the most intense battle I've ever seen in a game). The tank section is exhilarating and explosive, especially due to all the free rocket launchers everywhere. Funny how nobody mentions the mountain collapsing (revealing the alien fortress thing) behind the battle. Having the characters mention that might have been a good move, or even just adding radio chatter.

After entering the alien structure, things go steadily downhill for the most part. The aliens themselves are a bit boring to fight, really, with all the dynamics that made fighting the NK forces removed, the zero-gravity just feels too much like fighting underwater to make you forget about the jungle. The environment is a bit samey and disorienting, although I guess some of that was intentional due it it being "alien". If they had removed the "auto-orientate upwards" thing (perhaps by adding a button for that), it might have been a little more interesting.

In the ice sphere, gameplay improves somewhat. The alien grunt machines are more interesting to fight than the aliens themselves, but I'd still prefer the NKs (where did they all go, anyway? You don't see any of them after entering the alien machine). The way the ice sphere stops the minigun from overheating was a cool addition here. Nice design on the alien weapon Prophet gives you, especially how he added an RIS rail to it. I'm a sucker for alien/human hybrid weapons though. The environment is visually interesting, what with the extreme cold (bushes crack as you walk through them, instead of bustling out of your way) and geological upheaval. Fighting the alien flyers was cool too, like less predictable helicopters, and their deaths were cool too, what with the trailing "legs".
Exiting the sphere: The on rails shooty bit was okayish, shame they killed off the other two jeeps. Makes the whole bit pointless. Environment is pretty much the same as inside the sphere, but with no ice. Manning the AA gun was cool, shame it couldn't move. The missiles should have been homing, too, but the power of the main gun made up for that - seeing the alien flyers drop like flies gives you a nice feeling of kickass. This is removed when an indestructible alien walker comes along and kills pretty much everyone.

Leaving the island: Did I mention the game is super-duper "HOO-AH!" towards the US Military? Practically everything the US forces do make you want to give a big "HELL YEAH!" (even if you're a reserved English gentleman), namely the way your character announces that he is "U.S. Special Forces", the start of the tank level, the airstrikes, and the Marine Major who dies machinegunning the giant alien walker. Terrific fun. After retreating to the VTOL, you pilot it through a bunch of convenient canyons (rather slowly, this thing should have been much nippier [turbo was practically useless], and the controls - it should have flown upwards when you pointed up, not when you pressed space!) while blasting away at alien flyers with homing missiles and a cannon with unlimited ammo. The air-to-air combat was really fun, and is the last high point of the gameplay.

You land on the carrier, and this is where Crysis pulls a "talky level", showing off the super-realistic faces, facial animation and general character excellence. I noticed a glitche with the animaton here though, occasionally a characters legs would be "desynched" and would jerk for a second before returning to normal. The cutscene in CDC had a pause in it too, after which the Admiral continued mouthing wordlessly because his line had already been played. Overall a decent level, with nice atmosphere and graphics (zero gameplay of course). The nuclear explosion was a bit of a letdown though, especially for a game that does explosions so well otherwise.

The aliens finally attack the naval task force, you fight them off, everyone dies (including the Admiral, whose death is once again cool and redeems him for the mistake of a nuclear attack). The environment of the doomed carrier was okay, acceptable use of the flames, although adding a variable listing could have made it feel much more "in danger at sea". The alien walker battle was a bit badly designed, I expected to be able to kill it from behind, but it could only be damaged from the front. Getting frozen was a bit aggravating too. The super-final boss was a bit boring, (it's big cannon should have blown the Carrier superstructure to bits instead of... no noticeable visual effect. I guess they'd run out of budget by this point), and the nuclear grenade launcher you carry didn't look as pretty as it should have. Once it is defeated, you get picked up by Psycho and whatshername in a VTOL and escape, cue ending cutscene. Very poor ending, I thought.

    IN CONCLUSION:
Game stops being incredibly awesome when you enter the alien structure, and drops to merely being a good shooter. Up to that point, though, it's probably the best shooter I've ever played. Definitely worth your money, because what with the super-easy-to-mod engine, we'll be seeing some cool modifications.

I've probably listed the faults in such a way that exaggerates them, they're really not all that bad. The game is incredible. Apologies for stupid length of this review.

Of the small minuses, a very modest set of weapons can be noted, which sometimes made it boring, but it was diluted with the fact that you can conditionally storm any base in many ways. Also, a small minus is a slightly boring first half of the company where you almost constantly go from one base to another. Expand

I don't understand why people love this game so much. I can't say I didn't like it at all, but it doesn't deserve the 8.1 score it has. I can agree that graphics were insane for that time (still looks good in 2020), but everything else is quite mediocre. Optimisation is poor, game mechanics are unbalanced, story is boring, game design is bad, shooting mechanics are annoying, AI is dumb.I don't understand why people love this game so much. I'm not a hater to be a hater, I generally think Crysis is not a good game. I heard so much of this game before to a point were I was so excited, and let down is every way possible.

This game is horrendously optimized. It doesn't run good even on modern systems, with constantly FPS drops and stutters even not on the highest setting. It even crashed on me twice, like what a lord of crap

Everything about the gameplay is awful. The suit abilities are underpowered to the point where they aren't fun. Gun play is some of the worst, with a ton of recoil and bullet spongy enemies. Everything little thing can kill you, like using super speed can kill you if you run in something.

The game is also glitchy, like I saw props bugging out, a gun shooting itself, multiple graphical glitches, the list can go on.

Don't get me started on the last 'mission'. Without any spoilers, let me just say I had to grab a weapon that was needed later on. I forgot to grab it, so when that part came, I didn't have the weapon. So I went back to grab it, but found out that I couldn't go back. I had to load an earlier save just to get the weapon. That is the worst mission design I have ever seen.

Crysis is a bad experience that has been undeserving praised to a extremely high level. This isn't the amazing game people crack it up to be.

I know Crysis for a very long time, since this title was treated more like a benchmark than a game, but I never knew of someone who played the whole thing to speak fondly (or badly) of it. Bought it in 2015 (the backlog is slowly progressing) for a very low price and finished the campaign today.

Despite the amazing graphics and physics (for its time), the gameplay mechanics are relatively simple, yet fun. If I had to complain about anything in particular, is the length of the campaign. I finished the game on Hard (without manual saves) in only 9 hours, according to Steam.
It's worth buying to contemplate what's the "Can it run Crysis?" meme is about, but not at full price.

It was really a next-gen experience. Looking back on the fact that the game came out in 2007 still makes me disbelief it. It had great shooting mechanics, interactive physics, very good setting on sunny island and better than average story. The graphics were on the other hand from a completely different planet. 9/10

Destined to be a classic, Crysis is a creative and technological marvel that eclipses every other shooter released this year. [Holiday 2007, p.60]
  2. Crysis thrives on putting the onus on you to create your own brand of action and adventure in its stunningly beautiful locations. You and the game can haphazardly create moments of such gaming brilliance that often you pretty much have to stand up and applaud. [Christmas 2007, p.44]

This is some fast, well designed gameplay with enough options to allow players to use their own style of attack with satisfying suit abilities and weapons. Crytek has upped their attention to detail in presentation and dropped the worst parts of "Far Cry’s" story.
