Great game for its time. The last AAA game that tried to push the envelope. It was so ahead of its time in engine and graphics, that today, after almost 9 years, it can still stand on its own side by side to the latest next gen games.

The graphics and general production values are top notch. But the gameplay is also very good and satisfying. It is no Deus Ex, but offers some freedom in how you tackle each situation, has good gunplay, and satisfying enemies.

The story is the usual FPS story fare, but it works.

Many people call this a tech demo. Those people are morons. Just because a game has impressive graphics, doesn't mean it was only a tech demo. This is a good game.

Minus thing, is the AI, which is kind of braindead.

Still, when 5 and a half year after its release, Bioshock infinite managed a 94 metacritic score while having worse graphics and gameplay, makes me shake my head...

You can get it cheap now, and any modern gaming pc can max it out. So give it a shot, if you haven't already. 9/10, giving it a 10 to counter the fools with no taste in games.

One of the best games i have ever played it remembers me of Operation flashpoint another great game. I wold rate this game 12 but i have seen some minor mistakes so i will only give it a 10.One notable thing that make me laugh are the burning barrels in the cold atmosphere of the ice sphere where the humans freeze to death.

There are only three shooters I keep coming back to: Half-Life, Half-Life 2, and Crysis. It is good enough to rank with Valve's greatest offerings. Amazing graphics, fantastic physics that actually change gameplay when turned up, acceptable AI at maximum settings. The varied approaches to missions increase the replay value exponentially. I will never get sick of this game. 10/10.

I have played this game more than any game, and I have to say all other FPS games just seem shallow and dumb compared to this game. Its not a super hyper fast paste game like halo, its more realistic and has really good pacing. Its just plane fun, and far superior to all games out there, even 4 years after it was made. I own almost every FPS game that you can buy through Steam and have played them all to completion, so I think I know what i am talking about. If you didn't like this game its probably because you have been dumbed down by playing to much Halo. Expand

I believed that FPS genre has reached a point where there is not much room for innovation, especially after Portal. Crysis for me, took action FPS in a new direction.

Crysis is set in the year 2019. Us scientists have made some significant discoveries on one of Lingshan Islands. The North Korean government then goes on to seal the island and hold several American citizens in custody. Raptor Team, a US Army Special Forces unit is sent to rescue the scientists. This was not a war but a rescue mission. However, things turn nasty when they discover that they are not just fighting the Koreans, but extra terrestrial life as well.

As a part of the special forces unit, the player, i.e. Nomad, gets to use a nano suit. This suit gives the player the ability to use speed, stealth and strength. These functions are seamlessly integrated into the game. After a while, switching between different functions is so natural and intuitive. The suit changes the way the game is played. It can be used to employ different strategies to take out enemies. The semi sandbox nature of the game allows for a lot of freedom in the initial levels.

Combinations of abilities will lead to some very interesting gameplay moments. The same scenario can be played differently depending on the gameplay of choice, either use stealth throughout, or run and gun, or a little bit of both.

I would call a game immersive when I tend to keep playing and forget to quick save. This happened to me a lot in Crysis. I kept going and I never really saved. If I died, I was happy replaying from the last save point, and trying a different approach. Personally, I have not had that kind of immersion in a very long time.

Let me make this very clear, this is not Far Cry with better visuals. Far Cry is a good game, but this is way better. I played this game on hard difficulty, and I found it to be challenging and fun.

Visuals in this game are stunning. They are much talked about, and rightly so. In my opinion, this is the best looking game on the PC yet. I played the game on Core2Quad 2.66GHz, 4GB DDR 800, GeForce 260GTX and Acer 24â

[Story] Play as a super soldier marine on a search and rescue mission somewhere in the Pacific. Fight against the Koreans and then fight against the Aliens. I love pretending to be a marine - respect. [Challenges] The game play is a series of missions - stealth mixed in with run and gun. Mastering the special abilities provided by your nanosuit is required and will deepen your appreciation of each mission. I looked forward to completing each and every mission - so much fun. Gun choices are limited but there is always a right one for the job. Driving is abysmal and the weakest part of the game so just avoid it whenever possible. Tank sequences conveyed the chaos of war a little too well. Flying sequences with the VTOL were confusing at first because they are time limited adventures and the game crashes your mission when you get out of sync - just reload and enjoy. I especially liked the zero gravity exploration and combat sequences. Variety made this game great ! Playing this game on Normal was straight forward with 90% of the game played without a reload. I am gonna play this again in six months. [Children] This is an adult only title. [My PC] i7-2600K 3.4GHz / ASUS Z68 ProGen3 / 8Gig RAM / Radeon 6870 / 1920x1200 / W7 PRO SP1 [Graphics score 10] Wow may be a simple word but I was stunned at how lush this game world looked. This game needs a beast of a PC to play this on high settings - in fact my last PC could not cut it so I waited 2 years after purchase to play the game - until I built a new PC ! Even with my new rig I had problems but only in the last boss battles - I had to turn down the graphics to medium to survive without a crash - I am not kidding (and I was not the only one). [Controls score 9] I always play with a Logitech keyboard and a Kensington trackball. Remapping the keys in game was easy, but with minor annoyances like some keys that are common to all transportation - we really should be able to remap all keys for each transport mode. [Sound score 10] I always play with headphones. Voice acting great. 3D sound perfect. SFX awsome. I must say that in multi-person combat sequences sounds are so plentiful that it was hard to pay attention to command orders - incredible! The gameplay, too, is decent as it allows you to tackle each level and specific problem strategically, rather than the plain linear style of other shooters. This also means that dying is not a frustrating event, as when you respawn you can simply try a different route or tactic, rather than having to keep trying the same thing. The problem with the game is that after you enjoy fighting the Koreans on the surface of the island, you have to move underground and face the aliens that the game is based around in a slightly dull collection of levels. However, despite the fact that this part cannot match the incredible start of the game, it doesn't ruin the game like people say and it does feel necessary for the plot. Expand

I'm tired of this game getting a bad rap. Despite what some say, this was not just made to be a tech demo. When it was released, it had maybe the best graphics of it's time, but that doesn't take away from the story line, which is also fantastic. I would recommend, if your computer can handle it, to get the photo-realism mod. It looks spectacular.

Crysis set new standards for gaming visuals that no one can deny, and the intuitive gameplay the nanosuit brought in addition to its stunning world made it an instant classic. The second half of the game definitely bogs down the first as the gameplay becomes increasingly linear and the plot more ridiculous, but it's still good fun. This game is well worth your time, especially if you have the hardware to run it at max settings.

Being a huge fan of Far Cry this seemed like the next logical step to take in the franchise to continue the enjoyment found in their previous game. I did not expect this however, it completely blew me away. I was expecting a Far Cry 2 of sorts but with added Nanosuits, but what I found transcended the aforementioned game and has now become the bar by which I judge other FPS's.

The graphics when played on Very High, or even High are just amazing, the faces are also fantastic, they can provide real competition to Rockstar's newest motion capture camera's and their engine a good 4 years older than it. You can actually see emotion in their faces, anger as they're shooting you, apathy as they just wander about the yard, then fear as you're shooting them or as you grab them by the neck, it's truly amazing.

The physics are also fantastic, you shoot down a tree, the tree falls, it hits an enemy, they die because a tree fell on them, simple enough. You throw a fish at a Korean with Maximum Strength, it stuns him, because as strong as you are, it's a fish.

I was shooting a rocket to take out a helicopter when I noticed that the palm trees it flew by began to sway a little bit due to the heat or wind generated by the rocket brushing past, truly amazing, can really immerse yourself in the game with such a realistically portrayed physics and graphics engine.

The gameplay itself, being the most important part of course, is for lack of words, a blessing. You can play the game literally however you want, take a pacifist approach and not kill a single person (as you don't actually need to), just sneak by them altogether, or just knock everyone out with sleeping darts as you progress. There is an entire island just waiting for you, just run about and find little teams just traversing the land that you can either ignore or toy with, depending on how you want to deal with it.

I once thought of escaping the island, so I grabbed a boat and started to make my escape when the radar indicated that I had been spotted, confused I looked around and saw some smoke appear out of a distant warship, realising what was about to happen I jumped ship and not a moment too soon, 2 torpedo's just dessicated my boat as I was now left to swim back, not wishing to have more rockets fired my way I started my way back to shore when the radar alerted me again, thinking I was about to explode I turned around to at least see the torpedo's before they killed me, instead I was greeted by a nice dorsal fin sticking out of the water, I look under the water praying to God it's just a dolphin, but of course not, a shark quickly swims at me and eats me.

The scenery is stunning, the AI manageable (not the best, but certainly not the worst, they will at least attempt to flank you), the graphics/physics absolutely generations ahead of even current games. The story is basic, but done in a new way, with some nice twists along the way and an absolutely fantastic zero gravity section.

My only con with this game, actually 2, are the clipping errors, where an object will hit you, slow moving or fast, doesn't matter, the game registers that 2 objects are in the same location and decides to stop this problem by killing the 2, and since you're the living one between the two, it's you who die's for what is generally no reason.

The 2nd however? The fact this game has ruined what used to be decent games by making me realise that THIS is out there, and that real life isn't actually shiny and brown, but filled with colour and life.

As my all time favourite FPS, even over HL2 (it's sort of in it's own class, I can only really judge it against other Valve makes as they tend to blow the competition out the water) and other on-line games, I give it 10/10.

This is a masterpiece. Even now graphics is outstanding, and in 2007 it was "The Future". I remember there was no such computer being able to run this game smoothly on ultra settings, and that was ... intriguing. I was able to play Crysis only in 2009 with newest computer. Great shooter, great levels, great plot. Even today this game worth trying. Masterpiece.

The quality of the graphics and the physics remain unsurpassed, in my opinion, even when compared to more recent games. Immersion is critical in games such as this and the CryENGINE used provides this in spades. There’s also a pretty good storyline behind the action and the pacing is good, with the action steadily ramping up to an impressive big finale. The voice acting is always convincing and the cut-scenes fit seamlessly into the flow of the game. The combat is challenging and rewarding. I have just two criticisms: First is the fact that the single player game ends! I wanted much more but this is a game that can be played more than once as the “sandbox” nature of the island allows for different approaches to the gameplay, plus there’s a good multiplayer version to continue the fun, and there are custom maps and mods out there. Second, there’s not enough humour. I think any game benefits from a few laughs (the Half-Life series is an excellent example) but I can’t remember any in CRYSIS. Still, this doesn’t matter too much when what you’re given is so absorbing and entertaining.

The AI is sometimes buggy, but sometimes clever and attacks you from several sides. I improved it with Greater AI mod.
The story is only average, especially the characters are superficial.
Crytek had a nice idea to give you a suit, that gives you 4 modes. Yo you have even more possibilities to continue than with the fact, that the game is open as Far Cry, just a bit less.

Crysis was my first real open world FPS. The gameplay is awesome, I could do anything I wanted when I wanted, but the graphics were too demanding. The graphics were not optimized at all, look at Crysis for consoles and Crysis 2/3, on low they looked better than Crysis on very high (except Crysis for consoles of course). As for the game itself, the scifi-action adventure story takes us to the Lingshan Islands where it offers a gorgeous tropical setting as backdrop for the still to this day impressive physics and gameplay. The large sandbox play areas allow various nano suit powered approaches for aggressive/stealth/tactical navigation across the densely A.I populated maps. I play this game every year as a sort of Cry-holiday throwing soldiers into huts and cruising the waters with Jaws at maximum speed. I even enjoy the alien bits that seem a bit more dated in 2020, but blew my mind when I first played it. Would love a game developer to do a 'spiritual remake' of this game. Expand

    Graphics
Don't get me wrong, I knew Crysis was kind of a breakout in graphics in 2007 and it is not like I have never seen the actual gameplay on YouTube or something but it just hits different when you run it on your PC. The first thought when I saw the opening cutscene was "I don't believe it was released in 2007. There has to be some sort of mistake. Did I download a modded version? Remaster?" but there could not be any mistake - the game was truly the original Crysis released in 2007. The graphics are unbelievable in the fullest sense of the word - up to the last minute of the game it was hard for me to believe this shooter was released in 2007. It was so ahead of its time I don't know how gamers were able to deal with the **** graphics of other shooters for the next 5? 7? 10 years? Seriously, what was the year when games finally stopped looking inferior to Crysis?
    Gameplay
First of all I want to admit the fact the Nanosuit is the most badass battlesuit in the history of videogames and one of the best looking suits in history of humanity. Additionaly, Nanosuit is a great game mechanic which, if you think about, is so simple and obviuous that I am sure if not Crytek then any other major game developer would come up with this concept so Crytek got really lucky there. So what is so great about the Nanosuit and why I can't stop talking about it even though this chapter was supposed to be about gameplay? Because the Nanosuit is the gameplay. Take the suit out of the game and it will lose its magic that very moment. How many times you had to suspend your disbilief when you were singlehandedly dealing with the whole armies in FarCry or Call of Duty? I mean, how come I can just heal my bullet wounds with first-aid kids and keep going as though nothing happened or even worse, how come my health regenerates by itself if I just wait a little? Forget about health, how come a single person or even a soldier is able to take out hundreds of other soldiers and trained killers? Do you know how many times in Crysis it seemed unrealistic to me that I am basically an one-man army? Not a single time. Because I am an one-man army. Bullets don't harm me as much as they should because I am protected by the best futuristic body armor. My health generates by itself because I wear a freaking nanosuit which definitely has built in repairing/healing mechanisms. Add to that the ability to become invisible, fast and strong and you will get a perfect receipt for a supersoldier who of course is capable not only of cleaning a tropical island of enemies but also can fight off an alien invasion. Nanosuit is basically the cheat code in terms of gameplay (just like a post-apocalyptic world after a nuclear war is the cheat code in terms of setting) - you just can't **** it up.
    Story
Some say the plot of Crysis is trivial, I say the plot of Crysis is classic - I would even say Biblical. Don't expect this game to give you life lessons or pose deep philosophical questions: you are here to be a super-duper soldier who saves the world from an alien invasion - what else as a young man I could wish for? It is like the most generic plot you could come up with for a videogame but who cares if it is awesome? What surprised me the most is the courage: Crytek was so sure in the success of the game they dared to not tie all the loose ends and basically announced the sequel right after you end your final mission - even Modern Warfare which was released the same year wasn't so brave.

    Conclusion
Crysis is a game which should be remembered not only for its mind-blowing graphics - the plot is solid, the charachters are memorable, the gameplay is superb, the music is top-notch. It looks like the graphics ended up to be so good it overshadowed everything else Crysis did right.
My score for Crysis 1 is 10 out of 10.

If you've got the system to run it, this is what makes PC gaming worthwhile.

1st and foremost, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the street. Crysis isn't a game meant for people who kind of think they might want to try an FPS - it's fairly difficult, and downright punishing to first-time players. Its steep system requirements are another underline of that fact. Generally, any hardcore gamer will have no problem running something like this - 1st and foremost, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the street. Its steep system requirements are another underline of that fact. Generally, any hardcore gamer will have no problem running something like this - and even at medium graphics settings, it looks no worse than any other modern FPS. On high and very high, it really shines. The reason I don't give it a 10 is because the story is a little weak. It's one of those stories where you're really into it while you're playing it ... but try explaining it to a friend. This rating is based on how good a game it is compared to other games on the market. It's innovative (the nanosuit is a great addition), fun to play, and not too hard or too easy. The addition of delta mode makes it even more interesting - it's not harder, it's just a little different. I didn't rate this game based on its hype. It was a bit over-hyped. Perhaps that's where some of its high ratings came from, perhaps not. Hey, look at halo 3 - it's a decent game, but not even close to deserving a 10/10. Crysis didn't have THAT much hype, but just because it's overhyped doesn't mean it's any less of a great game, or any less satisfying to play. And I've never seen such excellent physics. Expand

Crysis is a great shooter but is not perfect. In fact, it starts going downhill when you start fighting aliens. Aliens who are not as smart or as fun to fight as the North Koreans. The graphics are great and provide a good reason to buy a new graphics card.

Well, this game is simply astonishing. it's not perfect, and there are a LOT of issues, but the parts where the game shines REALLY outdo the parts that suck. A PC upgrade is completely worth it to play this game. PS: those who complain about bad performance, like the Anonymous guy, it's probably due to bad system optimization, so pay attention to those little details.

Some would say "like Far Cry with upped poly count" but those are the wet blankets. This game takes everything that made Far Cry great and ups the ante. Pretty much everything has been improved on and the concept of you as a one-man-army is taken to the next level with the nano-suit, and customizable guns. Not reevolutionary, but evolutionary. :P

FPS turned up to 11. Superb graphics and gameplay, outstanding score and sound, and terrific polish in all aspects. Great freedom of choice and open environments. Moves PC gaming up a notch; a high-end rig is needed, but that was expected and required to push graphics to the next level. Ridiculous story and steakhead script and voice acting, more campy and funny than scary. Worth your FPS turned up to 11. I bought the game, planning to play it with my friend. I got hooked on single player, and even on "Low", the graphics are FAR better than any other game's. The one bad thing is that you need a pretty powerful computer just to be able to play it.

Brilliant Game. Guys running 8800 GTX... just lower the settings... i mean why pan a game that tries to bring the best out of your machine? Heck the game runs on old systems as well! I ran it on my laptop (after tweaking) and still had a great experience. And here's to those who are giving it zero etc for story... guys... who cares about a story? Crysis is very good. You have a nano suit that kinda makes you a Prince of Persia the Sands of the Beaches! So just Adapt, Engage... Survive. And WAIT for an EXPANSION! Expand

I don't get it, I don't understand how so many people could say this game is over-hyped....I'm running it with a 3 year old system with the graphics set on low with a couple on medium and high and it has the most life like graphics I have ever seen, from the leaves on the tress to the tortoises crawling around, it's amazing. The nano-suit is really fun to use, I don't get it, I don't understand how so many people could say this game is over-hyped....I'm running it with a 3 year old system with the graphics set on low with a couple on medium and high and it has the most life like graphics I have ever seen, from the leaves on the tress to the tortoises crawling around, it's amazing. The nano-suit is really fun to use, it's powerful, but not so powerful that it breaks the game; it's simple and you can switch between the modes easily and quickly to perform complex actions like sprint up a hill, megajump and then cloak at the top. I see no major problems with the A.I. It has to track a player that is invisible a sizable amount of the time; the vehicle A.I. is a little strange, but that's only if you consider that the A.I. would rather stay in a vehicle rather than leave it, and that it continues to shoot at you with a vehicle mounted machine gun when your right next to the jeep, but he can still hit you there if he catches you; the same goes for boats. I had a moment where I was in the middle of 20-some North Koreans, so I threw a grenade at a group of them and cloaked and ran away while they were all staring at the explosion, after a bit they picked up on me and stalked me into a creek-bed and I almost didn't escape; I think that shows pretty good A.I. in a game. If I was walking the jungle with a gun looking for some jerk who just blew up my hut, it would take me more than a second to react if said guy appeared in front of me with a assault rifle. The wide expanse of this game allows for very open gameplay. In one instance you could ghost-ride a cargo truck into a command post of an enemy going at 60 to level it; in another, if you wish, you can get into a fortress by slowly infiltrating inbetween guards to get the information and get out without firing a shot. The physics in this game are almost as impressive as the graphics, especially the dynamic model dismemberment, which allows you to level trees and buildings with sometimes as little as your fists. This has come in handy often while playing for me; if I'm trapped in a building I can just switch to strength and punch a hole in the wall and leave through that hole. In the end, this game takes all the elements that have come about since Far Cry and it amplifies them, the graphics are undeniably the most advanced rendering gaming has ever seen, on PC or on Console. The newer physics they've added with structure and vegetation destruction are crazy, I personally spent 15 minutes leveling part of an island of tress just because I couldn't believe how far you could go with it, you can chop them into logs! You can punch a small tree and break it, grab it and use it for soft cover! If you throw a grenade above the forest it creates a realistic shock wave that ripples the leaves on the trees. I just don't see what could be more fun than jumping onto a building and having the roof shot away underneath you so you fall to the ground and immediately throw a grenade to a wall which explodes collapsing the building on-top of the enemies while you jump out of the hole they just shot in the ceiling; as far as action fps shooters go, that's all I could really ask for. Until they implement this kind of thing in a setting like GTA. The reason I gave it a 9 is because all of your squad members are outrageous stereotypes and talk like they're selling crack more than discussing covert-ops, the Koreans "english" voices sound cut straight out of Team America unless your playing on the absolute hardest difficulty, (something which I just don't feel like doing right now, if they had a switch between Korean and English I'd have it on Korean all the time) the grab mechanism is a little more sensitive than I'd like it and it disappointed me that when the frogs jump into the water they don't swim away; and this is really everything I dislike about this game, honestly, so far that's it, that and I don't have a $10,000 computer to run it on ultra, which isn't Cryteks fault. Fantastic, I love it. As a big fan of Far Cry, I have been waiting eagerly for Crysis, and I have not been disappointed. For all those reviewers who basically badmouth Crysis cause its graphics are not great and the AI is dumb and the story has been done over and over again, id like to hear what game completely counters all of Crysis' advantages. Like World War II and Mario games haven't been milked for all they are worth? Crysis is beautiful even on MEDIUM settings which is what i run it at with a steady 40-50 FPS. Yea the A.I. is sometimes stupid and will just run to random places with no cover, but try and name any game where the A.I. is flawless. If you try and notice, if you have been spotted by launching a shoulder mounted RPG into a village of KPA officers and resort to hiding in a building afterwards, the A.I. WILL flank you from all sides. You'll find yourself laughing when you pick off a few enemies, then hiding, then getting shot at from all sides as you run around the edges of a village looking for more ammo. Plus theres a range of missions where you an drive civilian cars, KPA armored jeeps, tanks, and planes. With the addition of the NANO suit you wear, you'll have fun sneaking up behind enemies with your cloaking mode, switching to strength mode and flinging enemies across the forest. Crysis is worth the buy as long as you have the system to run it. My only Con is that unless your playing on NASA's supercomputers, your not gonna get to play on Very High settings. It's worth the buy. Expand

Destined to be a classic, Crysis is a creative and technological marvel that eclipses every other shooter released this year. [Holiday 2007, p.60]
  2. Crysis thrives on putting the onus on you to create your own brand of action and adventure in its stunningly beautiful locations. You and the game can haphazardly create moments of such gaming brilliance that often you pretty much have to stand up and applaud. [Christmas 2007, p.44]

This is some fast, well designed gameplay with enough options to allow players to use their own style of attack with satisfying suit abilities and weapons. Crytek has upped their attention to detail in presentation and dropped the worst parts of "Far Cry’s" story.
