Crown Wars: The Black Prince feels more like a mobile game than a full-fledged strategy title, with its simplified mechanics and repetitive gameplay. While it offers a historical setting with some tactical elements, the overall experience lacks depth and polish. It may appeal to casual players or those new to the genre, but seasoned strategy fans are likely to find it underwhelming and lacking the complexity they expect.

While none of Crown Wars’ gameplay is particularly bad, none of it’s particularly exciting, either, and other games have done it before and much better. If you’re looking to turn off and play a few rounds of generic turn-based strategy, there’s probably something for you here, but for the most part, Crown Wars: The Black Knight is a disappointing addition for a genre crying out for quality entries.

Marred by dysfunctional controls, tired turn-based combat and an abysmal story, Crown Wars: The Black Prince is a dire knight. There are glimmers of the game that could have been within its broken and fractured armour, but this warrior is wounded beyond repair. There are simply too many other games in this genre that are more deserving of your time, and money.

Crown Wars: The Black Prince is a very likeable X-COM that unfortunately (and probably) suffers from a lack of resources to make the most of the studio's ideas. Despite a few glitches and a tedious storyline, Artefacts Studio's title managed to keep us coming back to the game several times to improve our domain and our troops. The gameplay does not in any way revolutionise the genre, but it does offer a complete and enjoyable experience, which ultimately provided us with a good time: guilty pleasure is back on the menu.
