Bringing back the once seemingly moribund RTS in spectacular style, Company of Heroes 3 is intense, tactical, authentic, meaty and innovative - but not for the faint-hearted or those seeking instant gratification.

Quite simply, Company of Heroes 3 is probably the best RTS of the last decade. A wealth of single-player content and a solid foundation for long-term multiplayer action have combined to make this a cinematic WW2 masterpiece that’s essential for strategy games.

Company of Heroes 3 has an immersive and realistic gameplay, stunning graphics, audio design and overwall a great attention to every detail. The variety of units and tactical options available make the game feel quite varied, as well as the game's focus on strategic decision-making and resource management. Being able to make your own choice in the campaign makes the game unique. I had a nice experience but not having a simple tutorial can be overwhelming in some cases.

It is no exaggeration to say that Company of Heroes 3 is a triumph of the RTS genre…It offers an amazingly deep strategic experience, fantastic onboarding for newcomers, and plenty of content to keep fans playing for dozens of hours.

Given the excellence of the two earlier games, I wasn’t surprised that Company of Heroes 3 won me over once again. The addition of Total War-style campaign layer adds a little variety without being overwhelming. Even without it, though, the battles are still endlessly fun, chaotic, and challenging. Skirmishes and the Essence Editor will keep players busy until the next entry in the series. Company of Heroes 3 reminds us that there’s still a lot of joy to be found in the best real-time strategy games.

The best RTS based on WWII, probably one of the best RTS games in general.

The limited number of units available and the exciting battles once again keep me glued to the screen. You never know what awaits around the next corner, and whether another counterattack will suddenly roll in, for which I have to prepare at lightning speed ... As much as I like other strategy games, hardly any of them offer as intense and thrilling battles as Company of Heroes 3, with this level of spectacle and production value.

Whether I was fighting against humans or the computer AI, I never got the sense that war was too easy and my opponent was too easy to be. And so there was always a cost to fighting, and that’s the way it should be.

A very convincing return for one of Relic's more iconic series that keeps the best features of the previous games while also bringing fresh new ideas that change the way players can play and enjoy Company of Heroes. Will it be the best strategy game of 2023? Only time will tell.

With fresh factions, two campaigns, significantly more options, and a refreshed skirmish mode, Company of Heroes 3 exceeds the impossibly-high bar set by its predecessor by a shockingly wide margin. It’s a masterpiece.

Huge variety, impressive visuals and an enhanced gameplay make Company of Heroes 3 a must-have for all RTS-enthusiasts. Some bugs and glitches aside, Company of Heroes 3 is as intense as an WWII-RTS gets.

World War II according to Relic once again graces our PCs, and while there's certainly a few remarks to be made here and there, it's really hard not to look extremely favorably upon Company of Heroes 3, which brings a dose of enviable content and a personality that few other strategists are able to express at the same level.

Company of Heroes 3 is too conservative in terms of gameplay and fails to make its big new mode work as expected. Battles, from skirmishes to bespoke missions in the Italian campaign, are great fun and offer cool tactical puzzles to solve. The strategy map does add another dimension to the experience but patches are needed to realize its full potential. The multiplayer offers variety and will satisfy those who loved the first two installments. What disappoints me the most is the lack of innovation. Everything that’s entirely new is either marginal or doesn’t work as it should. Company of Heroes 3 does have great real-time strategy battles but the rest of the mechanics fail to deliver on their potential.

Company of Heroes 3 is a triumphant return to the game that raised the bar for Real-Time Strategy. With unparalleled action on the battlefield, that alone makes it work your while. The new grand-strategy campaign is a welcome addition, though it has some flaws, ranging from performance issues and bugs to simply being too easy. Despite this, it's impossible not to recommend Company of Heroes 3 for the excellent game that it is.

While fully utilizing its own zest of the series, the game added somewhat sophisticated single-player content called 'Grand Campaign'. Even though there's a slight wish for easier control, it is still a quality game to enjoy.

Company of Heroes 3 deserves a spot in any WWII buff or real-time strategy aficionado's game library. Multiplayer games are as sharp, intense, and addicting as ever, while the new sandbox mechanics of the dynamic single-player campaign give players a fresh (if sometimes frustrating) experience.

With the RTS genre on the back foot in recent years, it's hardly surprising that it should choose to crib from its turn-based cousins - and it has annexed those ideas without sacrificing the heart of its well-oiled war machine. [Issue#383, p.110]

In its current state, Company of Heroes 3 is an easy recommendation with the caveat about non standard controls. While you could always use a mouse and keyboard to play it on Steam Deck, I’m impressed with the community layouts, and have enjoyed Company of Heroes 3 quite a bit thanks to one specific layout I used. I assume we will get proper controller support when it hits consoles later this year. Until then, Company of Heroes 3 on Steam Deck is a solid base, and I’m glad that it didn’t fall short of my expectations like Age of Empires IV did at launch.

Relic has taken everything that makes the first two games great and made sufficient additions to help Company of Heroes 3 succeed in this renaissance of RTS titles. While the visuals are improved and more detailed effects are there, the overall look still feels dated and the lacking performance hampers the experience. Having two campaigns is an awesome direction and while one is more streamlined than the other, the Italian Campaign revolutionizes the way to do a single player campaign for an RTS. The AI in skirmish is downright frustrating and the trouble with online multiplayer is unfortunate. What makes Company of Heroes 3 great is the growth within the actual gameplay and the subtle details experienced along the way.

It’s clear that a lot of love has been poured into Company of Heroes 3, and that Relic is passionate about enhancing the core gameplay experience. Even though the game’s Italy campaign can be too big for its boots at times, Company of Heroes 3 still presents an enjoyable game that successfully retains plenty of the series’ classic gameplay elements. With an engaging North African mission, plenty of map variation, four factions, beautiful visuals, and an engaging setting, both veteran strategy fans and newbies are sure to find something that will appeal in Company of Heroes 3.

The best instalment of the series, that much is without question. There could be more changes, sure, and the graphics feel dated. But the new turn-based strategic map is a great addition which transforms the traditional singleplayer campaign into a massive operation for many an evening.

Company of Heroes 3 is an excellent game for veterans of the RTS genre and complete newbies who've never felt the rush of overseeing resources while micromanaging units on a virtual battlefield. Its double campaign feature provides two very distinct ways to experience the game, while the real-time strategy gameplay shows just how engaging and rewarding the genre can be if you give it the time and learn the systems in place.

The core gameplay of Company of Heroes has never felt better, and there are hours upon hours of fun to be had simply blasting your way through other players or teaming up against AI opponents. The dual campaigns are honestly a bit of a letdown, but I’m hopeful things could be streamlined or improved with future patches and updates. The RTS genre has undoubtedly been in a slump over the last decade, but Company of Heroes 3 might be just the shot in the arm it needs to keep going.

All in all, Company of Heroes 3 is great, and should be on the list for any strategy fan looking to get stuck in one more turn, or one more fight. It's a fitting inclusion in Relic's library of incredible RTS games, and continues to show why the developers there are some of the best in the business. I cannot wait to tuck myself back into the fray, delighting in its beautifully crafted RTS-goodness over and over again in the coming weeks and months.

Company of Heroes 3 is a splendid and rewarding RTS game. Tense battles, brilliant map design, and streamlined unit management make it easily one of the best in the genre, with the Italian campaign acting as an exciting blueprint for the series’ future. If Relic wants to use Company of Heroes to tell serious and significant stories, though, the team needs to commit to actually doing that beyond just giving them a surface treatment.

Company of Heroes 3 lives up to the reputation of both its development studio and the franchise. An ambitious RTS that is not satisfied with following the line established by its predecessors and that arrives loaded with substantial novelties. A treat for fans of the genre and a must for fans of the saga.

Company of Heroes 3 is in many ways an exemplary sequel. Relic Entertainment improved many aspects of the series, most notably in the tactical pause mechanic, but there's also an excellent and innovative Italian campaign.
  41. Feb 20, 2023
    80
Company of Heroes 3 builds on what made the previous games so good. The tactical and at the same time chaotic way of warfare is even smoother thanks to the new gameplay elements and requires less micromanaging. Due to a lack of major changes, the end result feels like more of the same, but the enthusiast will be especially happy with that.
  42. Feb 20, 2023
    80
Company of Heroes 3 is certainly a solid production, whose path follows the path left by its two predecessors without particular deviations. But it's not a big problem that the gameplay has remained substantially unchanged, because that mixture between classic strategy (in greater doses) and simulation continues to work, offering a delicious depth that never leads to more rigorous complexity. The dynamic campaign is the most welcome novelty, and although it is not comparable in terms of richness of options to other congeners or to the 4X, it is an introduction to be fully appreciated. In short, Relic Entertainment's game will not be the bravest of the RTS, but it offers an experience of undeniable quality.

Company of Heroes 3 represents a great evolution of the franchise despite being less than ambitious when it comes to the battlefield. The inclusion of a campaign map is however the best choice the series has ever made, even though it's a shame it's not available in the multiplayer mode.

Aware of its past yet looking towards the future, Company of Heroes 3 offers something for everyone. The dynamic map of Italy is a great experience, although it's slightly marred by passive AI, abilities that don't always work, small UI issues, and a gameplay loop that doesn't encourage the use of all available tools...Apart from the two campaigns, Company of Heroes 3 presents more options than ever before with its four factions, including the Deutsches Afrikakorps, which is an outstanding addition to the roster. Although it still relies on past strategies, the modifications to tactical battles and the addition of new units demonstrate that almost two decades after its inception, the formula that helped Relic Entertainment become a household name in the strategy genre still holds up.

Company of Heroes 3 can confidently stand alongside its predecessors in the series. It's a fun real-time strategy game, although not as revolutionary or distinctive as its older siblings. The gameplay is almost the same as it was in the previous games.

Company of Heroes 3 proves that its unique and addicting RTS formula remains intact, and while it has plenty of solo and multiplayer content to keep you engaged for hours, a few design issues and presentation weaknesses prevent it from being declared an outright triumph.

Really good real-time strategy, but not enough innovations in mechanics and scenery. Company of Heroes 3 stays true to the quality of the series without deviating from familiar paths. Only the story campaign would have needed noticeably more love.

Although it has its problems, it's a game that can be as addictive as CoH 2 once you get used to it. The single-player mode is a bit shaky, but the multiplayer is promising.
  51. Feb 21, 2023
    75
Company of Heroes 3 is the continuation of the second opus: a well-made, well-packaged and complete real-time strategy game. The active pause and the dynamic map are two novelties that refresh a formula that unfortunately has not changed deeply in ten years and does not bring any great upheaval in the small world of real-time strategy. Nevertheless, Company of Heroes 3 remains a refined strategy game, more accomplished than the previous opus, which we recommend to specialists of the genre.

Company of Heroes 3 is a marvelous game and its gameplay is the result of years of craftsmanship and knowledge from Relic. Probably after 10 years from the previous title we were expecting something more, in particular from a multiplayer point of view.
  53. Feb 22, 2023
    72
Although the current Company of Heroes 3 is not perfect, and the designers at Relic Entertainment have had some bad ideas, the fact that this game has made it to the third title, to be honest, is enough for us old fans of the game to cheer and get excited about.
  54. Mar 19, 2023

Company of Heroes 3 offers, as expected, solid real-time strategy gameplay with four factions that have unique characteristics. The involvement of North African and Italian theaters of war provided additional flavor to the game. However, the hyped turn-based Italian campaign is lackluster and boring despite the great scope and needs major improvement.

After devoting almost 40 hours to Company of Heroes 3, I’m having serious trouble rating this game, as I could easily justify any score between 6 and 7+ out of 10. Overall, it’s a solid strategy game that provides a lot of content in the form of two campaigns – linear and dynamic. I enjoyed them both but found neither of them outstanding.
  56. Mar 6, 2023
    70
Company of Heroes 3 is a solid, but flawed, new entry into the series. The multiplayer especially is still amazingly fun, but there are a plethora of balance issues that need to be solved for it to truly shine. In addition, the single player modes are in many ways a bit lacking and even at times a bit boring. It requires more refinement, but if Relic can improve the AI, and build upon their Italy campaign, then the future is bright for the Company of Heroes franchise.
  57. Feb 24, 2023

The real-time battles are better than ever but rather than being a highlight the main story campaign is a peculiarly dull experience, that exposes the lack of genuinely new ideas.

The return of Company of Heroes is full of nice surprises. Sadly, the single player part is clearly missing, the promising single player campaign does not bring any challenge. Fortunately the co-op and multiplayer are excellent.
  59. Feb 20, 2023
    70
The classic RTS battles carry the third entry in this once-essential series, returning more or less untouched, but alongside a bloated and unfinished campaign mode that feels at odds with the core ideas of Company of Heroes.

Playing Company of Heroes 3 is a great experience if you like dynamic, tough, tactical RTS games that revolve around utilising the terrain to your advantage. But if you’re expecting a major evolution from the previous games in the series, you’ll likely come away disappointed. If you’re a fan of WWII strategy and somehow haven’t dived into the series yet, you’ll have a great time. But otherwise, you may as well stick with the original Company of Heroes.
  61. Apr 6, 2023

Pretty graphics or no, so much of the gameplay of Company of Heroes 3 is flawed in one way or another that it's difficult to recommend it. From campaign-breaking bugs in Italy to the inept AI that renders most Africa maps unsatisfying, the game came out in such a state that it's hard to believe it's part of the same series by the same developer. To the development team's credit, the game has been patched several times since release, but many of the issues persist. There are occasional glimmers of a brilliant game, but with so much of the content damaged by bugs, it is impossible to recommend it over replaying one of the other games of the series.
  62. 60
An ambitious RTS that attempts to shoulder the legacy of its predecessors. The skirmish combat remains fun and the campaign map has potential, but it's let down by wonky AI and a confusing difficulty curve.

Company of Heroes 3 is so intensive and spectacular, that it feels like an action game setting on WWII, but is a great strategy game with a strong story campaign in Africa and a new game mode with Total War style. [Recommended]
  2. Feb 20, 2023
Navigating a tonal minefield with just enough confidence, Company of Heroes 3 is a big, refined, and beautifully textured addition to an already brilliant series. [Eurogamer Recommended]
  3. Feb 20, 2023
The core of Company of Heroes 3’s pair of single-player campaigns is fun, tactical RTS action of the kind the series is well known for. Battles are often spectacular in their use of terrain and the series’ traditional mix of infantry and armor, and are consistently interesting despite the lackluster AI that loves to blunder its way into an unconvincing defeat. But its campaigns are both wrapped up in big ideas and stories that just don’t work out well. A buggy and frustratingly designed dynamic Italian campaign map feels like it’s just wasting time between the exciting tactical battles it loosely connects, and the North African campaign’s strong missions are strung together by loose stories that fail to connect. After the brilliant World War 2 campaigns we’ve seen from this series in the past, it’s hard not to be disappointed in these. [Single-Player Score = 60]
  4. Feb 20, 2023
It may have taken 17 years and one disappointing sequel along the way, but Relic are to be commended here for somehow managing to take tactical perfection and redefining it not just for old veterans, but for a whole new generation of armchair generals as well.
  5. Feb 20, 2023
With Company of Heroes 3, Relic could have easily taken the safe route — or, to put it in Sid Meier-speak, ignored the “completely new” and “improved” pillars of sequel design in favor of something familiar. Instead, it looked outward, recognized what made the best modern strategy games tick, and adopted those factors into its own formula. Company of Heroes 3 is a great sequel, yes. But it’s also just an excellent game.
  6. At its core, Company Of Heroes 3 is a rip-roaring return to form and then some for Relic's much loved RTS, and its stirring orchestral score will have you beating your chest and yelling hoo-rah like only the best toy soldier fantasies can. If Relic can iron out some of those lingering campaign niggles, this could easily be an all-timer for WWII strategy buffs, especially once its multiplayer kicks off in earnest in the coming days. It might be the kind of beach holiday that's riddled with mortar shells, machinegun fire and tank explosions, but whichever road you end up taking, this is one trip that's definitely going to be for the history books.
  7. Feb 20, 2023
In light of its ambitions, Company of Heroes 3 can’t help but feel like a disappointing version of that game that it feels like it should be (and, with patches, perhaps still could be). The dynamic campaign is a fun novelty with some real highlights, but it’s miles away from achieving what Total War’s campaigns regularly do. Still, this is a new Company of Heroes in a setting that makes its classic elements feel fresh and exciting again. It’s easy to recommend with some caveats, and if it ever comes close to delivering on the promise of that campaign, it will be an all-timer.
