After playing all the C&C series through the years, I was honestly glad that this got a remaster as it was often a source for a quick skirmish or lan party with friends back in the day and this doesn't disappoint with crisp fresh graphics and an updated soundtrack that was already iconic.

Another thing is that this has not only been revamped, its been slightly re-balanced as well with the allies not being so far behind the USSR anymore but still suffers from several key well known multiplayer imbalances such as USSR migs being especially overpowered and Allied cruisers being their overpowered choice.

Story wise, both games in single player offer a significantly challenging experience that definitely gets much harder in later missions, which some missions being absolutely disgustingly difficult and notorious to pass, most of the time requiring absolute perfection to pass, whilst other missions requiring just strength of numbers to win, this mission balance has been an issue since the 90s so not going complain about that, AI though is still an issue that hasn't been improved and most notable in skirmish where the AI will often choke up its own base with units.

Overall, I got this remaster on a steam sale for $5 and at that price you literally can't go wrong at all.

It's a good game for a nostalgia trip but does show it age at times which can be frustrating. While I recommend to fans of the series I don't recommend for people who've never played the old games.

This is a prime example of what a remaster has to be like. Every aspect of the old games has been improved (without changing the original flair of the game). And even on release it had a fair price tag.

    - Game missions are too easy or hard; did you enjoy mission of Nod 8? I gave it up, these challenges give someone fun but not me.
    - Story has nothing interesting. Follow orders. Kill someone. Someone dies... blah blah... provides no knowledge of the background of the game. I would have played hard as a member of Nod's brother if they provided the story, at least in text.
    - The speed at which resources are depleted on the map is too fast. Give me time to think about strategy, In this remastered version, resources have become very slow to regenerate. WTF?
    - It's very hard to build a multi-base like StarCraft. However, Harvester, the only hope, is a slow and expensive stupid unit.
    - AI cheats a lot even in Normal difficulty; I've never seen AI cheat in an AOE series or StarCraft, WarCraft series. At least I never felt that way at a difficulty similar to Normal.

It's basically a masterpiece, and even better when you use one of various patch-mods to round out the QoL issues. The developers managed to make the game even better than it was. No joke. Now, if you never played C&C, it's not going to impress you.

Keep in mind, this is probably the only good thing that came out of 2020.

The original game that gave rise to one of the most entertaining strategy game series ever made, that is until EA acquired Westwood and killed it. Command & Conquer takes Dune II, dresses it with more realistic alternative history setting, improves the gameplay mechanics and introduces some of the best video game cinematics of all time. It is by all means the definition of old school RTS. It is very fast and extremely fun. The music is second to none, except its own sequel, Red Alert. Yes, when you remove the nostalgia goggles, there are some problems with it. The campaign AI cheats and the missions are very scripted and the harvester AI can be really dumb at times. Like most RTSs, multiplayer is not that great, which is probably one of the reasons that the genre is on life support nowadays. You can’t really enjoy a multiplayer game where players build a base, defenses, an army and do strategic attacks. No. Players will probably attack immediately, with everything they have and the game will most likely end in less than 15 minutes.

That said, I refuse to take my nostalgia goggles off. I love this game with a passion. As a teenager, I used to love the charismatic leader of Brotherhood of NOD, Kane. And after all these years, he is still one of the best video game characters ever created. This is Command & Conquer baby. This series was only surpassed by StarCraft (which heavily imitated it but at the same time improved it greatly) and the original game still holds up.

Long live Kane and the Brotherhood of NOD!

    Command & Conquer: Red Alert:

Red Alert was my favorite game as a child. I spent hundreds of hours playing the campaign, skirmish missions and multiplayer on 56k internet. Revisiting was a big nostalgia trip for me and also interesting to see how it compares to the original Command & Conquer after all these years.

Let’s start with the music. Hell March is one of the best video game songs ever, if not the best. The entire soundtrack is nothing short of a masterpiece, puts you in mood and is a great fit for the fast-paced gameplay of Red Alert.

The story is a cheesy alternative history. Einstein invented a time machine and made sure Adolf Hitler doesn’t come to the world stage. This, however, makes Stalin rise as the absolute power in WWII. There are unforgettable characters from Tanya to Nadia, and more importantly Kane (I had erased from my memory that Kane appears in Red Alert. Without spoiling anything, let me just say it was a pleasant surprise). The cinematics have always been a strength of Command & Conquer series and Red Alert doesn’t disappoint. I especially enjoyed the ones with Tanya.

Gameplay is enhanced in some ways. The two factions (Allies and Soviet) are more distinct from each other in comparison to GDI and NOD of C&C. There are many units which are exclusive to a faction. While Soviet appear to be impenetrable with their Tesla Coil and Mammoth Tank, Allies have the naval artillery cruiser which are the most powerful firepower of the entire game, as long as you have access to water.

There are some serious AI issues in the campaign. You will often see your harvesters or submarines getting stuck. This one I remember from the original game. But there are also problems with the enemy AI, where the enemy stops responding to you efficiently as soon as you destroy some harvesters or power plants. I am not sure if this comes from the original game or if it is a problem with the remaster.

In most aspects, Red Alert is better than its prequel Command & Conquer. It offers more strategic depth with a wider range of units. But in terms of offering a good campaign challenge in medium difficulty, Red Alert pales in comparison to C&C. The enemy in C&C is smarter. Again, this may be an issue with the remaster but not the original game. I am not sure.

    9.5/10

Some words on the Remastered Collection:

This is almost a perfect remaster of one of my favorite game series of all time. Remastered graphics are beautiful and true to their original spirit. Press space anytime and you can switch to old graphics.

Red Alert medium difficulty felt easier than original medium and hard felt much harder than original hard. So I feel there are some issues with the difficulty balance in the remastered collection.

Overall, if you consider yourself remotely interested in RTS games, you have to purchase this collection. It is a great remaster; it blows new life into the multiplayer scene and it brings back Command & Conquer franchise from the grave. I am only hoping we will see a similar treatment to other titles such as Tiberian Sun, Renegade among others.

    9.5/10

PS: I will update my review once I play through the C&C and Red Alert expansions.

Some games are better left in the past as a good memory.

A rebalance that moved superweapons to buildings gave the AI air support in solo "1 unit versus base" scenario that meant my commando gets air burned. Other rebalances to the ship combat meant that in some missions I get nuked from off screen before I get to do anything.

And I know this is made after the old game, but I will not apologize for not asking for QoL improvements. An autosave would not go amiss, spacebar has been traditionally bound to "last message" (it is "see original graphics") and you could have made the missions a bit more clear. Back in the 90s you could do obscure missions but this is 2020. Put a marker on what I have to do, please. Nobody wants to play a missions against 2 bases but if you attack one the nukes start to drop but if you attack the other they don't.

But they are patching it and they seem to go in the right direction (they address keybindings in the latest patch). Also, mod compatibility. Also, load times, stutter and UI. So we're in the right lane.

I played Command & Conquer: Red Alert as a kid way back in 1996, where I routinely left a single enemy unit intact on the singleplayer missions so I could go nuts and build epic bases: Tesla Coils up the wazoo, tons of Mammoth Tanks, a sprinkling of Attack Dogs, and beautifully arranged layers of Concrete Walls and Barbed Wire. Ah, nostalgia!

This remastered edition exceeds all expectations. EA kept the game's integrity intact--quirky pathfinding included--and polished it up with eye-popping visuals and a stand-out soundtrack. They fixed the most glaring/dated user interface issues by adding unit queues and cleaning up the construction tabs. They created a "Mission Select" menu that outlines each faction's campaign (including briefing videos and victory sequences), and a "Jukebox" menu that lets you customize your in-game soundtrack. They tossed in a bunch of behind-the-scenes bonus content, some of which is hit-or-miss, but all of which creates an intense desire to complete every single mission and do justice to the game. Best of all, you can effortlessly switch from original graphics to 4K graphics by just hitting the spacebar. This is probably the best decision EA has made regarding the franchise since Yuri's Revenge--it somehow heightens the nostalgia factor while making the visuals pop, all at the same time!

I have only a few minor complaints: as of July 2020, I'm experiencing a frustrating issue where the game crashes for no discernible reason, maybe once an hour or so, and creates an auto-generated crash log that takes almost ten minutes to process. Not fun! It's also painful to delete old saved missions--you have to do them one at a time, which can drag on if you find yourself saving a game every three minutes like I do. But these are quibbles that can probably be addressed in a later patch, and so they won't impact my rating.

C&C Remastered is very clearly a labor of love. EA and Petroglyph threaded the needle by bringing the originals into the 21st century yet keeping their spirit intact. Anyone who played C&C as a child should strongly consider purchasing this remastered version--for $20 it's a steal. Now let's hope they've got plans for a Tiberian Sun/Red Alert 2 remake in a few more years!
