Since 1995 people have been complaining about the awful AI in C&C games. The fact that they made a remaster without improving this at all boggles the mind. Such an AI makes a game unplayable by today's standards. You can forgive horrible for a 25 year old game, but not for something that is new. They game is a faithful remaster of the original, with bonus content galore and modern quality of life features. They did a great job up-scaling the original videos, the will not win any awards, but for what they had to work with it is impressive. The soundtrack is amazing and graphically there is a clear upgrade while not throwing out the original style or feel (zoom in if you want to see more detail).

At $20 bucks, this is well worth the money. 2 Complete games and all associated DLC are included. They even went and included content from the console version of the games that PC players originally did not have access to. Plus, the team worked with the community to create the remaster. So if you want a true "remaster" of a classic, and not a "re-imagining", grab this game and see how other companies should do it...

I have later briefly played the original C&C and RA, but never got that much into it since i thought it was dated compared to RA2.. Then as an adult I bought the total collection and started playing again. This time; i also thought the early games was dated, but I suddenly discovered the quality and charm about them. I still played RA2 and Generals, but now I had a silent hope they would remaster the series. The hope strengthed when starcraft got its remaster and AoE 1 and later 2. SEing the great jobs the programmers did to those games made me wish a C&C remaster even more. Naturally I was estatic of the news of the remaster. And now it's here. Having more or less never played the original I was pretty excited and the expectations were maybe unfairly high. However I was not disappionted... At all. The intro was brilliant in every way and I emagine all of the 90'es players will sit and put on a nostalgic smile the entire lengh of it. I know i did. The graphic and interface is crisp and siuts the game well. the gameplay is what it is, with the slight bugs in AI and etc suiting and game from 95. And I didn't want it any other way. The quality of life additions to the UI and game it self is amazing and the outdatedness is almost terminated, but in a way where the game never looses its charm. I'm half into each of the four origian campaigns and loving it. This remaster has really brough the games quality back. graphics, sound, gameplay is as current as ever and with the original charm intact, this is a must buy for any RTS lover. Old og young. .. Now I just hope a RA2 and C&C TS is in the works... please... Expand

A ton of cool extra's like behind the scenes recordings of the fmv's and bonus tracks. The team behind this product really went the extra mile.

They even left in bugs and exploits as the original. This is staying true, no doubt and I know that a lot of people will appreciate the original experience, warts and all. Still it would have been nice if they fixed these ancient issues and have an option to disable the fix. They did include all the code so that programmers can easily make mods to fix this, so thats a plus.

I'll be honest I didnt expect this move from EA. I hope they keep this up! It's a long hard road out of hell but this is an excellent first step so kudos to EA for doing the right thing! (And f*** Konami and Blizzard for their cynical anticostumer practices and the s**t they pulled with their disgraceful butchering of Silent Hill and Warcraft 3 "remasters")

It reminded me why I fell in love with PC gaming. Rarely has a game been able to capture the imagination as well as Command & Conquer did. The game holds up amazingly well, the story is still engaging, the new remastered music is fantastic, and I can't wait for the next one. After Fallen Order, this is the second time EA has done right by us. Thank you!

This was something the game was undeniably lacking in Tiberium Dawn and Red Alert. Being able to seamlessly toggle between modern and legacy graphics is brilliant, so you can see how far the series has come from its infancy to now. So many cool features too, like the jukebox and being able to go back and do mission varients which couldn't be done in the original. For example in Red Alert where you have to help Tanya escape there are 3 different varients, and when you complete the first one you can go back and do the other two. This wasn't possible in the originals so a lot of thought has gone into this. I'll likely be playing this game for the next 10 years. An absolute bargain at £18. So much nostalgia! Expand

It is a remaster perfectly made of both games with so many bonus functions of flavors, etc., which is very positive. A very nice surprise was also the multiplayer mode in which it was very fun to play, anyway you can feel that it is a 30-year-old game but the developers did a great job in this respect. This is a perfect remaster, it has all the inaccessible additions from the ps1 version, it improves the graphics interface, it adds a lot of flavors for older players and cool features like changing graphics in real time, the whole thing with soundtracks, etc., custscenes are uncompressed and in super quality. Petroglyph's intentions were to give the graphics and sound a facelift, clean up the cutscenes, but otherwise remain faithful to the original. I can say they 100% achieved what they promised. This is a beefy package, a love letter to the old games and an invitation to the fans to re-experience them, as well as new players to check out what all the fuss was about, as long as they can put up with a few mid 90's kinks and warts. I can't imagine why anyone would dislike this. Go ahead and get this, it's definitely worth the price, unless you are one of those people for which not having an attack-move command is a dealbreaker (and even if you are, someone's probably gonna mod that in soon anyway). Great job overall and a must play for any RTS fan who wants to know where it all started or was there when it all started and wants to relive it again.

Amazing remaster! Mission accomplished by the team at Petrogyph, you've done a wonderful job and really hoping for future remasters in the C&C universe.

    Pros:
    - The new resolution is beautiful. Graphics are neat, shining and detailed. You can see the details on the units and buildings when you zoom in. Everything is colorful and easily discernible. Frame rate is consistent and you can keep the fps over 180 if you have a decent PC.
    - Although it's a remaster there are new improvement to the gameplay, like the ability to queue as many units as you want (In the original C&C you could build one unit at a time). Consequently, the UI has been refined and although it is still taking too much of the screen for my liking, it is more convenient than before.
    - The game is challenging as much as I remember it at the time. Resources are limited and scarce, and you will find yourself trying to expand your base as quickly as possible to acquire new resources. Although the gameplay relies heavily on tank rush, this tactic is not enough to win some games against a tough AI and you'll have to resort to other tactics (Like destroying the enemy naval yard to control the sea, or dropping Tanya in a heli behind enemy's line to blow up important structures). Conclusion: The missions are extremely fun to play.
    - Game includes all expansion, dozens of hours of gameplay. More over, you can find hundreds of user maps from day one. You'll have dozens of hours of fun playing skirmish.

    Cons:
    - Units path finding is slightly improved but still an annoyance sometimes. Wish it was possible to address it with a future patch but I guess it is part of the initial built of the game and nothing can be done about it.
    - AI is aggressive, but it is a matter of time before you realise it is relying on a couple of tactics that you can counter by building defenses at the right place. Bear in mind, that this does not make the game less fun. Compared to games like COH2 where the AI can modify tactics dozens of times in a single game thus making each game more challenging and sometimes frustrating, C&C relies on tanks rush and expanding bases mostly while managing limited resources. It's a nice and simple balance and I still like it as much as I did in the 90s. Not everything has to be complicated.
    - Some bugs. None of them is game breaking. They can easily be remedy with a patch.
    - Missions that do not include building a base and wiping out the enemy from the face of the earth are not very fun to play. Fortunately these missions are far and between.
    - Although Petroglyph is to be commanded for improving the cut scenes, their quality is a clear contrast with the crispiness of the game graphics. They are still fun to watch, they remind you of the 90s cheesiness.

All in all, I highly recommend C&C remaster for old gamers like myself and newcomers alike. A lot of love and passion are showing in this product. Hopefully, Petroglyph is working on another C&C remaster as we speak.

Lets start off with saying this is a remaster and not a remake, so the at the core it's still a game from the 90s, which means it will still have a few of the quirks like the outdated ai. To understand my excitement, you have to put yourself in my shoes, As a white 16 year old South African coming out of the apartheid years in isolation. Flying to Europe for the first time to travel the Netherlands, France, Belgium and England on a 4-week trip. When in London I walked down Oxford street and walk past this massive music and game store. In the window is this new game from the creators of Dune. A game I played, and we could not buy in South Africa. Begging and convincing my sister that we should scrape every penny together to buy Command & Conquer (she still teases me to this day - I chose a game rather than explore London more). On the plane back to South Africa I read the manual over and over. Got home, hardly greeted my parents, installed Command & Conquer and played through the night until I could not keep my eyes open anymore.

Supported every Command and Conquer game since. I still long for just that type of game-play, music, atmosphere. Later years I ran 7 consecutive gaming competitions with Command & Conquer & Battle for Middle Earth at the South African RAGE (Really Awesome Gaming Expo).

C&C 4 was so bad that I have yet to finish the game to this day!

It was thus with suspicion that I approached this C&C Tiberian Dawn remaster. Could EA ruin this again with their greed and corporate culture and modern micro transaction monetization?

Luckily the producer, Jim Vassella in charge of this did not and he stayed in contact with the community and understood what we wanted.

This is a classic game with some of its original faults improved so that you can enjoy the original experience and tap into the nostalgia. From the upgrading of the original installation sequences to the AI path finding issues this is true to what the original Command and Conquer and Red Alert games were with some much-needed graphics and UI improvements.

The star however of this game is the music. It is amazing crisp and hard hitting. Better than the original. The music alone is worth the price. Frank Klepacki and the Tiberian Sons are great.

Thank you to the community, the developers and the people that supported brought this into high definition so that I can enjoy a past experience with some modern conveniences.

May this be the start of some good things to come.

Now let me go and play some more.

"Welcome to the brotherhood. I am Sat. Just Sat. The right hand of the Cain" перевели как "Разрешите начать конференцию".

И, конечно, Welcome back, Petroglyph (Westwood).

Red Alert 1.

This should be the new gold standard for remasters. It improves where it matters most, but without compromising the original look and feel. It even retains the somewhat clunky path-finding of the originals. I mean, that's how the game played back then and therefore should play, even as a remaster. Otherwise it would become a different game. And let me be clear: It does not ruin the gameplay. It's just one of those things where you recognize that things have improved in newer RTS's. But I'm glad they kept it

The redone units and graphics overall are absolutely stunning! The detail that has been put in while still being faithful to the original is quite the treat to behold. I love zooming in on buildings and units, then use "space" to switch back and forth between the old and new graphics modes and notice all of the new details. It's really well-done!

I understand its part of the original games design, but dear lord some of the ai interactions are bad. Also hard mode doesnt seem to change anything other than damage ratios. Instead of making a level or skirmish more intense via money or tech, enemy units just do 5 times more damage than you and are twice as tanky.

Overall, I love it. I will most defintely be completing all these campaigns over the coming weeks. Heres to maybe some more GOOD remasters like this.

    Here's my honest review:

Game looks good, sounds good and it's the same old game(s) otherwise, just played the C&C Tiberian Dawn and enjoyed the campaign a bit. The videos have been edited to look slightly sharper but this has caused some clips to make faces look weird, especially if there's some noise in the picture. It's not too great and there's no additional details.

After playing through couple maps I noticed there's a couple issues that are strange to get a full pass through years of "development".

The first thing is that after a while I noticed the Unit Build Queue stops working for whatever reason. I still had the remastered version on and I don't think there's a button to fix this, maybe could be fixed by a full restart but I let that be since another issue got me disrupted.

2nd thing is maybe 4th campaign there's a rambo mission in GDI and you're commanding 1 unit, the Rambo who has ability to 1 shot any troop and destroy any building with C4. The problem arrived after I had to restart the mission and the helicopter who I controlled a while Rambo died (not sure if connected) after restart and killing the turrets to spawn the helicopter again, it just keeps flying into far north and never landing next to my unit so I could pick it up, and of course it dies when there's still those missile defense towers up.

I just decided to give up and get refund, this type of error is unacceptable. Without game breaking bugs this would be 7-8 out of 10, if they fixed the AI and unit pathing, made the game run higher framerate in HD mode it could be even 9-10.

Короче это плевок в лицо олдфагам и мой личный совет не вздумайте покупать это говно. great remaster of a game. of-course its not going to be winning any game of the years or anything but it was a masterpiece of its time and still holds up well today. special in a time where base building rts are absent from the world.

Another cash grab by corrupt EA. The game has vulnerabilities, bugs and glitches that rig the game. Damn shame seeing yall **** up this game. I suggest waiting for a sale or until they fix the glitches. Buy on Steam since Origin is a nightmare to get to work. Either way dont pay full price for bugs and glitches

    A machine gunner who fires at a shorter range than a grenadier's grenade flies;
A tank that is easily shot by 3 machine gunners...

Apparently, the phrase "game balance" was forbidden during development.
Some games are better left in the past as a good memory.

Bottom line: a dose of nostalgia for a couple of evenings for those who remember and absolute garbage for those who don't.

What is with the ugly day-glo graphics? The original had military colors, it looks like they used Crayola crayons to fill-in the new models ruining the military aesthetic. Nice FMV, but the day-glo graphics ruins it.

The original game that gave rise to one of the most entertaining strategy game series ever made, that is until EA acquired Westwood and killed it. Command & Conquer takes Dune II, dresses it with more realistic alternative history setting, improves the gameplay mechanics and introduces some of the best video game cinematics of all time. It is by all means the definition of old school RTS. It is very fast and extremely fun. The music is second to none, except its own sequel, Red Alert. Yes, when you remove the nostalgia goggles, there are some problems with it. The campaign AI cheats and the missions are very scripted and the harvester AI can be really dumb at times. Like most RTSs, multiplayer is not that great, which is probably one of the reasons that the genre is on life support nowadays. You can’t really enjoy a multiplayer game where players build a base, defenses, an army and do strategic attacks. No. Players will probably attack immediately, with everything they have and the game will most likely end in less than 15 minutes.

That said, I refuse to take my nostalgia goggles off. I love this game with a passion. As a teenager, I used to love the charismatic leader of Brotherhood of NOD, Kane. And after all these years, he is still one of the best video game characters ever created. This is Command & Conquer baby. This series was only surpassed by StarCraft (which heavily imitated it but at the same time improved it greatly) and the original game still holds up.

Long live Kane and the Brotherhood of NOD!

    9.5/10

    Command & Conquer: Red Alert:

Red Alert was my favorite game as a child. I spent hundreds of hours playing the campaign, skirmish missions and multiplayer on 56k internet. Revisiting was a big nostalgia trip for me and also interesting to see how it compares to the original Command & Conquer after all these years.

Let’s start with the music. Hell March is one of the best video game songs ever, if not the best. The entire soundtrack is nothing short of a masterpiece, puts you in mood and is a great fit for the fast-paced gameplay of Red Alert.

The story is a cheesy alternative history. Einstein invented a time machine and made sure Adolf Hitler doesn’t come to the world stage. This, however, makes Stalin rise as the absolute power in WWII. There are unforgettable characters from Tanya to Nadia, and more importantly Kane (I had erased from my memory that Kane appears in Red Alert. Without spoiling anything, let me just say it was a pleasant surprise). The cinematics have always been a strength of Command & Conquer series and Red Alert doesn’t disappoint. I especially enjoyed the ones with Tanya.

Gameplay is enhanced in some ways. The two factions (Allies and Soviet) are more distinct from each other in comparison to GDI and NOD of C&C. There are many units which are exclusive to a faction. While Soviet appear to be impenetrable with their Tesla Coil and Mammoth Tank, Allies have the naval artillery cruiser which are the most powerful firepower of the entire game, as long as you have access to water.

There are some serious AI issues in the campaign. You will often see your harvesters or submarines getting stuck. This one I remember from the original game. But there are also problems with the enemy AI, where the enemy stops responding to you efficiently as soon as you destroy some harvesters or power plants. I am not sure if this comes from the original game or if it is a problem with the remaster.

In most aspects, Red Alert is better than its prequel Command & Conquer. It offers more strategic depth with a wider range of units. But in terms of offering a good campaign challenge in medium difficulty, Red Alert pales in comparison to C&C. The enemy in C&C is smarter. Again, this may be an issue with the remaster but not the original game. I am not sure.

    9.5/10

Some words on the Remastered Collection:

This is almost a perfect remaster of one of my favorite game series of all time. Remastered graphics are beautiful and true to their original spirit. Press space anytime and you can switch to old graphics.

Red Alert medium difficulty felt easier than original medium and hard felt much harder than original hard. So I feel there are some issues with the difficulty balance in the remastered collection.

Overall, if you consider yourself remotely interested in RTS games, you have to purchase this collection. It is a great remaster; it blows new life into the multiplayer scene and it brings back Command & Conquer franchise from the grave. I am only hoping we will see a similar treatment to other titles such as Tiberian Sun, Renegade among others.

    9.5/10

PS: I will update my review once I play through the C&C and Red Alert expansions.

And I know this is made after the old game, but I will not apologize for not asking for QoL improvements. An autosave would not go amiss, spacebar has been traditionally bound to "last message" (it is "see original graphics") and you could have made the missions a bit more clear. Back in the 90s you could do obscure missions but this is 2020. Put a marker on what I have to do, please. Nobody wants to play a missions against 2 bases but if you attack one the nukes start to drop but if you attack the other they don't.

But they are patching it and they seem to go in the right direction (they address keybindings in the latest patch). Also, mod compatibility. Also, load times, stutter and UI. So we're in the right lane.

Another thing is that this has not only been revamped, its been slightly re-balanced as well with the allies not being so far behind the USSR anymore but still suffers from several key well known multiplayer imbalances such as USSR migs being especially overpowered and Allied cruisers being their overpowered choice.

Story wise, both games in single player offer a significantly challenging experience that definitely gets much harder in later missions, which some missions being absolutely disgustingly difficult and notorious to pass, most of the time requiring absolute perfection to pass, whilst other missions requiring just strength of numbers to win, this mission balance has been an issue since the 90s so not going complain about that, AI though is still an issue that hasn't been improved and most notable in skirmish where the AI will often choke up its own base with units.

Overall, I got this remaster on a steam sale for $5 and at that price you literally can't go wrong at all.

It also comes with competitive ladders, steam workshop support and various other welcomed additions to the skirmish element of the game. I played Command & Conquer: Red Alert as a kid way back in 1996, where I routinely left a single enemy unit intact on the singleplayer missions so I could go nuts and build epic bases: Tesla Coils up the wazoo, tons of Mammoth Tanks, a sprinkling of Attack Dogs, and beautifully arranged layers of Concrete Walls and Barbed Wire. This remastered edition exceeds all
I played Command & Conquer: Red Alert as a kid way back in 1996, where I routinely left a single enemy unit intact on the singleplayer missions so I could go nuts and build epic bases: Tesla Coils up the wazoo, tons of Mammoth Tanks, a sprinkling of Attack Dogs, and beautifully arranged layers of Concrete Walls and Barbed Wire. Ah, nostalgia!

This remastered edition exceeds all expectations. EA kept the game's integrity intact--quirky pathfinding included--and polished it up with eye-popping visuals and a stand-out soundtrack. They fixed the most glaring/dated user interface issues by adding unit queues and cleaning up the construction tabs. They created a "Mission Select" menu that outlines each faction's campaign (including briefing videos and victory sequences), and a "Jukebox" menu that lets you customize your in-game soundtrack. They tossed in a bunch of behind-the-scenes bonus content, some of which is hit-or-miss, but all of which creates an intense desire to complete every single mission and do justice to the game. Best of all, you can effortlessly switch from original graphics to 4K graphics by just hitting the spacebar. This is probably the best decision EA has made regarding the franchise since Yuri's Revenge--it somehow heightens the nostalgia factor while making the visuals pop, all at the same time!

I have only a few minor complaints: as of July 2020, I'm experiencing a frustrating issue where the game crashes for no discernible reason, maybe once an hour or so, and creates an auto-generated crash log that takes almost ten minutes to process. Not fun! It's also painful to delete old saved missions--you have to do them one at a time, which can drag on if you find yourself saving a game every three minutes like I do. But these are quibbles that can probably be addressed in a later patch, and so they won't impact my rating.

C&C Remastered is very clearly a labor of love. EA and Petroglyph threaded the needle by bringing the originals into the 21st century yet keeping their spirit intact. Anyone who played C&C as a child should strongly consider purchasing this remastered version--for $20 it's a steal. Now let's hope they've got plans for a Tiberian Sun/Red Alert 2 remake in a few more years!

While adding remastered graphics and a modern UI, Remastered Collection avoided dealing with 20-year old shortcomings of the original game, like poor pathfinding for infantry and harvesters, for instance. C&C was difficult not because of good AI or interesting tactical puzzles, but due to poor usability. With modernized interface, it’s a walk in the park, and will be enjoyable only as long as nostalgia lasts. [Issue#247, p.44]
