    City of Gangsters provides a brilliantly free-form gangsta’s paradise, where countless options are available to weave intricate criminal schemes. It can get repetitive during certain stages of expansion as you have the same interactions over and over, but if you can get over that then it’s pretty compelling. There’s an irresistible one-more-turn appeal that’ll keep you greasing palms and bootlegging hooch long into the night.

    Overall, City of Gangsters is a fine title that attempts some fun twists on the 4X genre. The setting is excellent, the art is good, and the music is atmospheric. It would have benefitted from a little voice acting, especially in the tutorials, as this game has a lot of text to read. City of Gangsters demonstrates that the 4x genre works just as well in miniature as it does in grand, sweeping epic spans of history.

    A complex cross between a tycoon, a 4X game and an RPG with turn-based combat. It offers some interesting ideas but ultimately failed to convince me. I think the developers simply overdid it, implementing tons of features and elements that either don’t matter much or are poorly executed, but unnecessarily clutter the game and overwhelm the player.     Even if you’re at peace with managing deliverymen with tommy guns, City of Gangsters is a bit of a difficult sell. At its core, it is a long and unexciting game. A lot of the time I felt like I was trying to decode the game’s logic and keep plates spinning rather than run a successful bootlegging operation. When everything clicks, it can be somewhat satisfying, but that happens so rarely, you’d think the game was sampling its own wares.

If I was a suspicous sort I would think that something suspicous was going on with this game. It is abysmal.

    Lots of potential - very poorly implemented, Is a micro micro management simulation where you spend most of your time scrolling up and down lists,

    Its 1927 - I have 203 corners, 102 crew and $640K. around 40 managed business - 10 gambling joints and 20 as yet unused businesses. My crew list of the right therefore has around 120 entries. If I click on someone on the map, they highlight, but I have to scroll up/down to find them

    If I click on my £ total to see the "Where is my money" list. It is too long to fit on the screen. Its is bottom justified to I see the lowest 45 (ish) entries. Which in my case accounts for about $90K. So to find the other $500K I have to scroll up and down the "Crew List"

    Operations- spend ages time and effort on getting crew to operatives. Send them on schemes, they die! So now stick to the Accountants and the operatives.

    Operatives - I send them on a scheme. they have 10K on them - But wont progress the scheme untill I make sure $250 is in the HQ! Madness

    Mechanics.
    Can set up new fronts whilst expanding anywhere on the map. So have to stop all expansion (which may take a few turns) then remember where you wanted to set up new fronts, set them all up - then revisit them to start expansion again. Madness

    Cant rename buildings so help you. In the end i have used a whole notebook to remind me what I planned to do when

    No notifications that things are about to stop - only that they have actually stopped, So you have to scroll up and down (remember it if a scroll up down sim so thats OK) the list of 50 business to check what is Red. Why to I need a sheet of paper to plan my "cops schedule" when I am using a computer!

    If you click on a business with more than 1 person on the corner - you are asked "whom" you want to use. Every fricking time. You can reselect people down the bottom anyway - so why keep asking. Often you are checking inventory anyway so dont care.

    Every time you start a turn you get loads of click though messages. Option to turn them off please! you have taken this corner, that corner and another corner

    I need some lumber - I know I have some - I click on the $ total on my screen - I click on the inventory listing. I see a list of every item I own. Cant search it, get no totals, can't click through it. So I spend ages scrolling up and down (it is a scroll up and down sim so that is fine) . So I have to make a note on paper (if I only ha a computer to use) and then scroll up and down the "crew list" (it is a scroll up and down sim so that is fine) - though life is made a bit harder as both lists use different names for businesses - to find them items. Or I just go buy more of them

    And before all this happens you have the joy of getting a reasonable starting postion. OK you have the seed which helps a little but some options would be nice
