I haven't played WoR or Mount & Blade so I have no prior experience with medieval melee combat games. I bought this game because it looked hilarious and it was on sale for 13 bucks. Even at 13 bucks its not really worth it but I still enjoy the game for what it is. It's just a casual game where you can split skulls for 30 minutes. It's just a casual game where you can split skulls for 30 minutes. If I were reviewing this game at the $30 dollar retail price I would say its not worth it. The graphics are dated, the performance optimization is questionable and I couldn't see myself playing this for more than an hour every couple of days because the game lacks depth. Also, the music is disgusting.

Even with all its problems Chivalry is still fun and worth trying out if you can get it at a discount. The game modes are fun and sometimes if you get on a roll you can take out a large portion of the enemy team without dying. It's a decent game but I feel there is still a lot more work to be done. I hope this game sells well because it might mean more developers attempt to improve this style of multiplayer combat.

While it has the potential to be a great game it's plagued (for the better part of a year) by poor frame rate and lag, even on high end machines and the developer's apparent disinterest to remedy the situation is all the more reason to buy this game only when its on sale.

Great game with best medieval combat mechanics made so far. You can block, feint, combo, stab, slash, kick, throw things, this is absolutely great. Sounds are heavy, realistic and help the immersion a lot. There is a vast amount of weapons to choose from, 4 distinctive classes and many diffrent game modes ranging from simple deatmatches to sieges with catapults and ballistas Maps are interesting and there are a lot of them (for example an arena pit great for deatmatches). The graphics are not really that good, especially the maps look, well, quite ugly to be honest. Also I hate the game's music but hey you can turn it off (it's not Modern Warfare 3 where you couldn't Lol).
Game has some problems with hit detections and lags, but it's not so drastic like some people claim.
Solid game gets a solid 7/10 score.

I wish the game was slightly more historical, but iI understand that this is not how they planned it which is fine. It is a very hectic type of game which pretty much just relies on running up and flanking people and hitting them when they are fighting someone else to win. The blocking has a delay to and can not be held, which is fine for one on one but not to great when vs more than two. The archery is slightly disappointing and doesn't really feel like a real bow. Its still a good game to play and have fun with never the less, but I feel it is lacking quite a bit and is heavily over hyped by all the people on you tube who where given beta key to promote it. The problem is the ability to win with the old hack and slash strategy. Regardless of how high your skill level is, there will always be some people interrupting a battle slashing away randomly and getting an ungodly high score. It's incredibly easy to counter this on a solo fight, but in FFAs and anything higher than 2v1, it's impossible. Still that's in the hands of the players and not the fault of the game. The game just lacks replay value. I'm not very fond of playing this very often because it's not the most appealing thing I've ever played. It gets dull rather quickly and I'm only motivated to play every once in a while. Expand

Really, this game is best when you don't take it too seriously (because of gameplay bugs and balance), which is a problem for those looking to be competitive. The skill ceiling, despite the few simplifications and such the devs have made (possibly not on purpose), is still pretty high and there's almost always some cool new trick or maneuver or whatever you can learn. The game has seen a lot of patches, yet there seems to be a pattern: Fixing one things breaks another, sometimes meaning that an old bug is brought back. The dev team really seems inexperienced. They have poor communication with the community and poor transparency. Its seems to be a common enough thing that major patches have gradually decreased the performance of the game (optimization of the game never seems to have been visibly (and non-trivially) addressed). For example, the game is neigh unplayable for be now, in that load times are extraordinary (~3 minute launch times). Expand

In other words, it is kind of the opposite of the "easy to learn, hard to master" motto Blizzard has; Chivalry is hard to learn, easy to master.

Overall I would still recommend it for the shouts, decapitations and the fun you have during the ten first hours of the game, but would warn you about how you'll quickly grow bored of it.

As a game it does lack the polish that I found in WOTR which is a very well rounded game but I hope that future content will rectify this. My only concern is that its price tag is disproportionate to what the game itself offers but as most (if not all) future content is meant to be available for free this should not be an issue. While is do love the melee combat system, at the moment that's pretty much all I like; a part of me wishes if only WOTR had chivalry's combat system, what a game that would be.. There's no single player campaign and the multiplayer content is also slightly lacking.

For starters the weapon unlock content is basic and each class can fully unlock their primary weapon with in a few hours. There's no character customization, such as helmets or armour pieces. There's really very lettle going on in this game besides the actual gameplay..

The gameplay, is definitely fun and challenging. Challenging because the combat is very clunky, the game does not really "play well" in terms of fighting game mechanics. There's no in depth fighting game system here and most of the challenge comes from just trying to land blow. The game is fun though because it is challenging and also very gory. When a blow does land the player is treated tia sensational spectacle of blood and gore which few games can mimic (especially in this day and age of games being targetted at mass markets). Heads explode, arms are removed and the death scenes are treated by sensationally funny sound effects.

All in all I have to give it to this game, it's fun. I enjoy shooting an arrow into the face of an opponent and hearing a "thud" and then witnessing the poor fellow slump to the ground. It's just very unfortunate that the game lacks polish and content, almost to the point where it feels very much so like a "mod" instead of a stand alone product.

Within a week I purchased it, and within a week I could already tell that this was just going to be another easily-exploited PvP game. You will find yourself annoyed or even infuriated by this games distinct lack of balance. I understand where the developers were coming from, trying to make a realistic PvP medieval game, and I can respect that. But the lack of balance in this game makes a good portion of your games boring as your constantly slaughtered by Vanguards and Archers. So unless you plan to play as the aforementioned classes, prepare to be murdered over and over again by the same dude with a pole-axe.
All in all this game is a blast when your allowed to have fun, the design, game-play, and even humor in this game makes it amazing, and when your alive, you will probably be laughing the entire time. But that is only a fraction of the time due to its lack of balance and easy exploits.

I want to give this game a higher score but it would need more content or better game modes. I love the combat even if I get a bit frustrated at my sword passing through someone without dealing damage because, when you chop the whole arm off, you will laughing like a mad (wo)man. The combat could be worse though. So, I do give the developer some credit. This game is worth buying and playing.

On the really bad side, there's the archery system, which is horrible, and can mostly be summed up by "Random spam of arrows for 10 minutes", most of the time. A lot of glitches on the hitboxes, especially when trying to parry a blow.

But I think the biggest problem this game has, is the extremely high learning curve required. The game doesn't have a lot of content, and you'll certainly abandon it before being any good on the battlefield sadly.

The only other drawback is the lack of maps which can make game play a little stale after going through the same map time after time. All of this could be fixed by a patch and a little DLC (hopefully free)

Chivalry is slightly… bipolar. The spectacle of a duel (especially if the two opponents are seasoned veterans) can be spectacularly breath-taking, a complex choreography that one can only marvel at. Blocks, feints, slashes, back-steps, side-hits: despite initial impressions, this can be a truly intellectual game of tactics, requiring high skills, observation and deviousness. On the other hand, the spectacle of a massive battle of fifty warriors can be ridiculously chaotic: especially if the players are inexperienced and go for blind “hack and slash” tactics, it’s more like a metal concert mosh pit than a battle for glory and honor.
